1. Introduction: Hello. Welcome to my skill share class in this class. I'm going to teach you how to make a really nice, easy, beginner friendly reversible tote bag. This type that could be war both ways. So you have it this way, or you can flip it inside out and where you have a way around. So it's really beautiful inverse itto hotel. The fun thing about this is that you have two bags in one so you could make it out off two of your favorite fabrics and have one pattern on the inside of a patent on the outside. It's lovely because all of the scenes are concealed inside, so you can't see any scenes from the outside on. It's a really nice begin a project. It's great for anyone on, I tell you, step by step, how to make this so it's perfect for you. If it's your first time learning have to say so. If you want to learn how to make your own little tote bag on making multiple sizes, multiple styles, then this is the school share cost. You 2. Choosing Materials: So here are the fabrics I plan on using for my basically for my bag. I've chosen some really nice, neutral, tired Goldie turn and silver turn fabric. This is like a satin silk. So is a fake silk, but it's really high quality satin material. You can use any material you choose. Just think about the qualities of the material and how easy, or how hard it will be, too. So the ticker is, the harder it will be to serve its really feeling like a shift that would not be good to make a bag from. So you really need to think about the material content off fabric and really look the bags that you have, what materials they're made from. We're making a kind of tote bag, so I usually see tote bags made from sort of softer materials. Not so much off a thicker leather like a bucket bag would be made from, so you could also make a tote bag from a lever. But I'm choosing to make a sort of like a fabric tote bag that you could use every day. It's a little bit more dressier, then the shopping kind of tote bag So we are going to be creating a double sided reversible bag. One sign is going to be the gold material, and on the other side is going to be Silva. So I have both silver and gold in the same material. And Patton, you don't have to do that. You could be any pattern or material. It's completely up to you. And that's the fun of being able to design your own bag. So I have two pieces of fabric. Kid. This is in the silver on day, two pieces off the gold because, he concedes, got full pieces of fabric that I will be cutting out later on. But first, let's move on to creating our pattern pieces. But this is pattern papers could pattern cutting paper. You can find it on E bay Amazon. Or you could use normal paper that you have at home. You can even take together packaging paper if you haven't got proper paper, but it's best to use pattern cutting paper because it was designed for pattern cutting. I you can get different types you can get not once of lines and squares on there, some with dots to help you. Measurements I actually prefer the plane pattern papers. There's many different types you can get, but the ones of the dots and the lines on this so that you can get even straight measurements. If that helps you, you should use that. But for me, I just like the plane. On paper, it's a little bit been up in the normal papers, like tracing paper. As you can see, it's very thin, so that's the kind of paper that you'll receive when you get passing paper. You can get from any arts and crafts shops or any sort of habit. Dash Cherie, probably in the same place that you get your fabric. You can buy your pattern cutting paper. I'm also using one of these. This is really good, so you have your curve side so they could be your curved lines. Then you have the straight sides taken your straight lines as well. Never mind this. I actually accidentally stepped on there and broke it. So remember not to step on yours. Andi. You'll need a pencils that you can drool straight lines, and it's good to erase the line if you need to. So let's jump right into making the bag. You can change the measurements if you want to. You want to make the exact same backers be you can follow along with the measurements that I'm doing. So it depends on how big you want your actual bag to be the length of the straps so you can play around of it. You can make lots of different types. This is so versatile. You can create a batch of these and you could even sell them on, etc. If you wanted to. 3. Making The Tote Bag Pattern: you want to use? Do you want to take the straight edge of your pattern, master and lining up at the bottom off your paper? So for this bag, I am going to be doing 16 centimeters alone. I'm just doing half of a patterns were going to be cutting me on the fold, and it's going to be double the actual with so 16 centimeters, the back will actually be 32 centimeters large because we're gonna cut you unfold, and it's gonna be doubled. So I'm gonna measure out 16 centimeters trata gate straight x possible thes straight lines . But on your patent master help you to nine up against the paper. And if you have the lines on the paper, that can also help you as well. And it helps you to get a really nice even measurement when you're doing this at home. So I'm going to be doing 16 cents sister a really nice straight line. So from the center, it stops from one, so it goes 12 20 in each ways. So that's the reason one starting from the center, because that's the the one With the one starts, I'm going to draw a center line off the bag, so I'm gonna put that right here for the center line for this intern line. I am going to be drawing 1st 25 centimeters for the main part of the bag and then 30 centimeters forward the strap, so I'm going to get a straight as possible. You can get it as a right angle to your line. Using this, there's a pivot point that you could put your pencil in and gay as a right angle. If you want to line it up, that's the exact It's an exact right angle. It's a first on the drool, 20 centimeters. Then I'm going to move it along and draw the extra five centimeters in the game. On the right angle. Get is straight line on going to market here, just a little mark to show That's where the top of the bag will be. So, since that's where the top of the bag will be, I'm going to draw a square because the bag is going to be a square shape, something that drove straight across. But I'm gonna make sure that everything is at a right angle. Some of the lining up with my straight line and it's on here. That's what the lines are for on your patent master so that you can get even measurements is a threat and then draw it down straight down to the line that we drew previously over here. So we have our rectangle slash square shape. So this is the size of the back. So we're doing, like, what a small bag. So I'm gonna go back to the center line here, right here, and from here we're gonna add the straps. Something to pull this down so that you can see in frame. Just trying to get a straight line a line. Everything up from your 30 centimeters. That's up to here. That's maybe the length of the strap. This is going to be a nice leapt from here to here is 30. Looking at it now. You could even go longer if you want to do. You could have 40 centimeters offorty. Try not to make it too short. I think, actually, I might even make it 35 centimeters, actually. So I'm gonna change. They're gonna make it a little bit longer and take it. But if I centimeters, that's just a little design change that I've decided on just in the spur of the moment. And you can do things like that when you're designing for yourself. You can make things up as you go along. I'm just gonna regional that life's it looks a little bit messy. Okay, so that's it. So we have off strapped limp. Nothing. That's a much nicer strap. Live because is going to be a tie up strap. So once it ties together, it's gonna short in the A little bit. But you'll see once we've made it, how it's going to look. So here you can also make up what you want, the width to be the width of the strap. How thick you want it to be. Obviously, don't make it too thick because you don't want it to be 10 cents beaches. You would like it to be between maybe 1 to 5 centimeters at the thickest. So that's really up to your pretty decision. I think I'm gonna go along with free centimeters, so I'm going to take it, gets the mind and mark up free centimeters. When the draw a straight line from the main part of the bag all the way up to that line where, after smoked, this is going to be off strapped. So far, we've got a square in a long wrapped rectangle that goes up again. Here's enough. A place where you could make another creative decision is with just strap. So how big do you want the curve? You want a curve to start from here to stop from down here when it bigger or smaller. If you make it bigger, that will add onto the bag, and it will make it deeper on. The strap will be very small, so you won't be able to put on your shoulder. You'll have to hold in your hand. The smaller you make the curve longer than strap you have, and the small of the back will be could even make it even wider. We'll solve the suit. You can make this bag over and over again and play with the dimensions and see what it will look like. I think that I would like it to be about just here, and I'd like it to join, to hear you could even have a really, really store curve, and it could just be from here to here, So it's really up to you. This is just to smooth out the transition between the strap to the main bag because we're gonna cut this all is £1 piece is gonna be really easy to serve on. It's going to be release simple on beginner friendly. So we're going to make this all in tow. One pattern. So from here to here, just federal my car and just make your own decision on where you want your car. I'm drawing it from him. No specific measurement. But if you want to know for reference, let's maker and see how much is so. It's about 12 centimeters from the main bag to distract after on the curve. And from here to here, community here is about 13 centimeters from where I've drawn one point to the next point. So if you want to tonight that you're in reference, but you really don't have to do that. You can is really up to your own design decision, and I think it's fun to make your own choices and see how things turn out once you send them so that you know Okay, if I saw it this way If I patent cut this way, that's the best way to learn. And I've always had fun learning that way personally myself. So that's a very, very top of our strapped right up here. I'm going to be drawing a little point again. It's your creative decision. That's the fun part about my classes is that I like to give you creative decision because that's the way I I learned. And that's the way I like to learn a swell. You control a little point, you confer a point, and that could be where we're gonna tie off. Or he could be just straight across. Or could he be cover that you might even change my mind and make it of Do you know what? Let me change my mind. I'm turning into a cup. You could do anything to make it into a car. It's really your decision, Orel. A triangle I'm gonna stick proved the point because I prefer that. Just cross that out where you can rob out must the beauty of using pencil You can just scribble it out? Rob outlines that you don't need. So that's the main apart, the back done. You just need to do some finishing touches, so fish should be caught full times unfold. That means that we're going to cut. You could have two main pieces full of the inside and remain pieces for the outside. But since this is a reversible bag, we're gonna create a really nice fabric for the inside as well. So usually on saying patterns when you're cutting something on the phone that you have this simple, you have a symbol of a line with two arrows, and that means that you need to chi unfold. We're gonna follow that basic rule just so that it's easy for us to remember when we're going to cough fabric out. We know that we need to cut this on the fold. So I like to do some traditional pattern markings that goes on the fold, cross out these lines that you don't get confused when you're cutting them out. If they're not important anymore, you can rub them out across them out there. No important. The main line is here. This is we were kind of cut from. So what 4. Cutting Out The Material: So it's important to have some sharp cutting business just specifically for paper. You need to have your fabric sisters and your paper sis's never mix them up. That's very important, so I'm just gonna go ahead and cut this out. So now it's time for us to call you out. One or fabrics. I am going to play out first on this piece. It's unfolding in heart. It's nearly as I can, so make sure to cut it. I'm cutting it on the right side of the moment, 90 out to the edge because this is quite a delicate fabric. I'm not going to be using sewing pins. Usually you could use some pins, but I did a little test on the fabric before on the peace where I've cut here, a small piece of fabric cut the test on this. Fabrics delicates ladders when you put a pin in it, and that happens sometimes we've saddens certain sounds that for silks that can happen. That's kind of just the quality off the fabric. Um, and also levers leave holes if you've used pins of them, so I wouldn't recommend you recommend you to use clips. But as I don't have any clips I'm going to be using. Take. So I'm doing is rolling the tape around so it creates a sticky side on both and then attaching that to the pattern to tak e in Peyton Place today stays in place movement, calling it so the only would use pains. But on certain fabrics you shouldn't use pins because he could ruin it. So on the fold side, we have call unfold so lined up with the handle on the fault. That's very important. This side is not on the fold. Let's start talking with our fabric shears. So once you've got them out, you'll end up with two pieces of fabric like this and you will have a front in the back and we're gonna So the first part of the bag now you want to put them right side to right side , and you're gonna pin down the side seams So follow me as I been along aside and pinning along this side only and I'm not pinning along the curve. We're not serving along the curve with just something along this straight side and the opposite six straight side as well. So you want to so a straight line along the line that we just pinned and remove the pins as you so along so that it doesn't get court so that you can see I'm stopping and I'm taking the pins out as I'm going along so that it doesn't get court or stuck or broken. So just selling a straight line along where we've just pinned and only serving there. We don't need to do anything else at this moment. Take your time and just tried to leave about one cm seam allowance. 5. Making The Bag : So I'm repeating the same process on the opposite side, using the straight stitch on, making sure to reveal the pins as I saw along the line. I'm being careful, not so over them because that would break the needle. When you get to the end, remember to back stitch at the beginning at the end off every single stitch line that you make. So this is what you should have. Now have your pieces laid out to get on. They should be stitched on both sides. You want to fold it in half and then you get the shape off your bag. This is the main shape, and all you need to do is pin the bottom edge, have you back? I'm just being in the bottom edge of the bag, and this is where we're going to. So So it's really they're easy to get the shape of your bag. What I did was folded it in half. If you didn't catch it, quite then just rewind and go back again. So I'm just teaching the bottom of the bag. We basically created the shell that we need and now we're just put in the back together once you finish sewing the bottom of the bag. It should look like this. You should do this. Both pieces repeat the same steps to the inside piece on the outside piece. They should have too little tote bags like this. This is going to be both pieces. I'm turning this one inside out, so it's the right way round. The right side fabric is going to be facing outwards, whereas the other one will have the wrong side fabric facing outwards. This is how we're going to start assembling our bag and making sure it looks beautiful. Now this is how it should look, and then you should just add one that is inside out and then the one that's a right way round inside of each other. This is so that both right sides off the bag are touching. You want both right sides to write sites off the fabrics, as you can see here, and that's how we're going to. So it's giver. We're just going to pin it together, leading a small opening so that we can back it out later on doing this so that all of the seams have concealed. We've seen side of the bag so that we won't have to worry about any messy finishing on the inside. This is a great way to create a reversible bag on at the same time, have a beautiful material inside and out. I'm just Cantlie painting straps to get making sure to pin around the opening. So at this point, you should have both wrong size facing outwards, and it's being pinned right side of the fabric. It's the right side of the fabric, and that's how you know that you're doing it correctly. Now we're ready to So the perimeter off the bag, making sure to leave a small opening so that we can bag it out later. Run, Let's head on over to our saying machine. 6. Finishing The Bag: Okay, so we're starting by sewing up the opening that we just pinned and just selling a with the way around the pins line. So, as you can see, I'm taking at the pins and working my way around this clip is actually sped up a little bit , So I was actually doing it a lot slower. The myths and taking my time. You want to take your time to make sure that you don't so the wrong part will make any mistakes, because then this could affect the back once you go to turn it inside out. So watch me here. I've slowed it down a little bit and put in the legal in lifting up the foot pedal and turn it around and rotating and people in it so that I could turn on the corners. I do it again, and that's how you can turn on the corners. It's very simple. So you want to make sure to leave the opening so that you can turn it all the way for, and this is what you should end up with. You should have a bag, and now we're going to use that hole that we left so This is the opening right here. That's the part we didn't so up on. I'm just reaching my hand through into the bag and pulling everything out the right way round. So this is a little bit tight, so it's hard to do. Be careful not to rip your stitches and just pull the back all the way through. We're doing this so that all of the stitching remains on the inside off the lining, and this is a really nice way to hide all of the sitch lines. And you don't have to worry about over locking or finishing any of the edges because they're going to be all internally inside of the bag. So just make sure that you get one of the corners and pollute the right way round. So once you have it, the back should look like this. It's turned all the way inside out on. We just have to slow opening here at the arm off the back on. What we're going to do is for the includes on. We're going to stitch that little closing up, so just fold in the in both ways on I'm going to pin it closed and this is where we're going to stitch up that little opening. - So now I'm just stitching it closed with a regular stitch. Just top stitching those pieces together. Andi, I'm talked stitching around the whole entire back just so that it can lay flat on dis not lifting. So I'm not just top stitching the opening on top, stitching around being tired back. - Um , now we are finished. Guess you're so happy to finish your back. So for closing the bag or you need to do we have the straps? This is the inside. And then you just take this two straps at the top and tie a knot, and that will create all it was strapped for us. And you could make it longer or looser if you want. And this all depends on what you did in the pattern cutting stage. So if you is going to have longer straps, that would be done in your pattern cutting. So this is how it looks at the end and the final result used already. Keep back 7. Class Project: So now it's time for the class project. This is where the fun part comes in. Make your own design. So remember from the beginning we chose to different fabrics. Make sure to choose to interesting barbers because thes can make or break the design of your bag, follow along the steps and changed the pattern to your desire. There's no strict way of learning pattern cutting. I really like to play with pattern cutting and be freely with it. And that's how I find that I learned the best. What shapes make the best shapes that I like? So the only way you can learn this free trial and error designing with longer straps of a smaller bear, a bigger bit and then you can actually learn how the different shapes and different styles of tote bags you can make from this one pattern. There's endless possibilities, so I'm so excited to see what you guys will come up with. I would really love to see some photos off your final designs and all of your tote bags, and these could be really great for Christmas gifts, birthdays and everyday bag or even two settlement etc. So get creative with it and never, ever give up. If you need any help, feel free to leave me a message and I'll get back to you by.
