Hello, I'm Madonna! I am a Filipina Artist and Illustrator, a happy full-time Mom of one, and a walking wanderer based in Florida.  My big love for nature helps me to be creative in every way. I love to try to explore different kinds of media like watercolor, gouache, and pen. Most of my work is traditional so don't underestimate the power of your hands.

When I do not paint, you can find me in my garden digging sweet potatoes, or filming for my Youtube drawing channel. I really do believe that being passionate about art takes a lot of patience, effort, time, and allowing yourself to grow in your craft. 1. Intro: Hello everybody, This Madonna and minorities and eternal lover. And welcome to the glass of how to fill a sketch book for beginners, item Beidi ideas. In this class, we are going to use gouache to being beautiful, fall leaves, fall landscape, and chest nets. I'll walk you through a simple suppliers and show you how the mix limited color palette that you can apply for your fall season paintings. This class is for beginners who loves to paint with gouache, our watercolors. And by the end of this class, you will learn how to paint directly using this medium and learn new techniques and methods that you can apply for in any subject that July to paint in the future. So grab your brushes and let's begin. 2. Tools and Materials : For the Tolson materials for the class, I'm going to use my sketchbook. This is a XL Canson mixed media paper lying by 12 and this is 90. Or you can use whatever paper that's available to you. But I highly recommend you use at least mixed media paper or higher. You can do better or sold if you have 140 pound because it is thicker paper since we'll be using guage. Feel free to use whatever you already have. But I really do recommend to use printer paper for this, although you can, but their soul will not be that great. And I'll be using my angle brush. This is a deluge of writing brush. And in a small garage and a filbert brush, our flat brush if you have. So this is really great for beginners. You can use whatever brush that you already have there. It does to be like mine, but if you have a garlic brush, you can too. But just be aware that the squash beans is allowed bit thicker than the regular watercolor paints. To make sure I have two jars of water for rinsing your brushes and paints. And four bays all be using the ones who are in uterine burn. This is and they're immersed have, if you don't have it right now or the same brand, you can use whatever brand washed that you already have there. You can definitely use whatever kind I'll be using tape to for painting landscape later. And euphoria leaves can have hand people use for reference says, or. You can visit unsplash website for inspiration for fall or add-on for your chosen subtext that you like. And now that our tools and materials are ready, let's go to the next video and let's explore some colors for the fall. 3. Mixing colorsusing limited palette : Now that we have tools and materials, Let's start exploring fall colors using a limited palette or paints. Yes, we'd wash it is easy to be overwhelmed. That's why I highly recommend you to start the basic setup. First, at least basic colors, some six or 12 colors to start. And this will help you get better and learn to mix colors confidently. So having just three colors will level up your mixing skills. And I'm going to use my angled brush for mixing the colors. So let's start with the yellow. And we're going to Mexico to read and have some more blue for some brown color. And I'm going to rinse my brush first, nice and clean and get another yellow and a little bit of red and blue and it's almost a color or a branch brunch. Let's see if we can replicate this color. So I'm just going to add this one on the side so you can see I have a bird Shanna here that's already in the tube. But I just want you to know that you can do it too. You can make your own burned shadow if, for example, you don't have it, or is that available to you? So using my primary colors and going to closely coveted callers as possible as I can. We just using three colors to come up with burns Shen is Osama, yellows hereand and a little blue. This one is too dark, so let's separate the callers nags to DR1 to see you one more color we need to add in order to get it as close so far. So you can try to experiment with different colors which is using primary. So I'd just be curious and you can create alerts or browns, read some muddy colors that you can use for your future projects. So play around with colors. Play like can they said that's one of the sacred Bolero with your favorite brush to make different marks or Westeros, SQL-like and work all or you can try to experiment for like, what done wed using dry brush, anything that you can. I'm Troy, and a blank paper that nor rules make mistakes and make some more. And that's how you get to know your medium or a was trying new things embrace the characteristic of this phase. And this is really helpful because along the way you will get to know more and deeper about guage in the color mixing get into sentence to use or it can be intimidating. But being able to learn the basic help you. Along the way to improve your decision-making. For example, we'll turn to his are humiliated color that just seeing your rep or sarcopenia color. And from that, we're going to build a foundation or frames and mixing your own color naturally. Now that our hands are already warm up, Let's go to the next video. Let's paint bleed. 4. Fall leaves part 1: Let's start painting leaves now. So using the tape off my angled brush, I'm going to sketch lightly to overall shape of the leaf. This stage you only need a pain that is very diluted with water and you don't have to use benzyl at all. And also, this technique will give you confidence in sketching on despots. So using the light color as my Beryllium winners sketch, so you can sketch it in a loose style. Just relax your hand and m just going to undo the Azure side of the leaf to this method is great, especially if you are painting or drawing with or using references or even from your imagination. So with this method you can skip a tracing or using Venice Snell's just using your eyes to sharpen your observational skills. Next, I'm going to use some yellow, orange, your 41st based. And this is a bit similar with watercolors as you can work wet on wet technique to blend some yellows and oranges. A disbelieve that turns sessions of colors a. You can use watery mix beans for it is, you can always layer it afterwards. And don't worry about the details for this stage. So I'm just labial to callers of the shape. Since squash, is there a workable, you don't have to worry about painting perfectly for differs based yes. Feel the shape would oranges, yellows are what? Gold color or believes that July to put it in nursed because you are going to add more layers later. And you can also choose to use a bigger brushes if you wish. If, for example, for example, you want to work much faster and spreading those colors, but a bigger brush, you can do it. But sometimes bigger brush or holds more water and pigment cell just because the tissue will going to be much faster, just be aware that it can soak up more water and pigment. So having that in mind, having that or water control, having paper towel with you while you're working on your side and will Going to his right to access before you put your brush directly onto the paper. So while waiting for it to dry for the first leaf, I'm going to sketch some more leaves. And if you want the shapes to be edgy or not super obvious, you can use a watered-down paint like the one I did for the first leaf. And it will just be cover up later. So as you can see, I use more painted colors to sketch the leaves. So it means that I will need a thicker pain to go over on top. So a will be so obvious that it will really look like super outline news. So if, for example, you sketch already dried up quickly, it will take time to reactivate. Or sometimes if you're a wet it first already some marks, I'll be your brushes to wet my brush strokes is really obvious because I'm impatient for the first layer to dry. And this technique is also called wet on wet because you mix that Gall are altogether in one place. So it kind of blend together. So good guage. You have a lot of freedom in thinking. You don't need to. So you just need to practice lean over five, which is similar to oral and a water control. And as I mentioned before, the thicker paper, the better assault you will get to system I use more dark outline. You can use the tip of the brush does shape or outlined or ruffles are kinda like the shape of the leaves. And I'll do the same on the other side too. So before it dried up, I quickly pick some colors so that you will blend uniformly together. This is another one and what technique which you can apply to and it's a great way to practice. I use lamenting way to follow the form of the shape of the leaves don't. This brings more dimensional even though it looks flat. And to make it more dimensional, I painted more veins and more details of the leave in some darker values to have that a tree to look. So using a table that angle brush, this can grade smoother textures are alike, are really dry leaf. I outline it, would very, very thick vein. So it means that I have to be a really, really big. So Kuwait on adding more colors or else you could see the colors already drawn up innocent and dried as uniformly. So to do it again, I went to my brush and get something that in try to add more color. But this way you can see that economists trapped also the other layers. But you can use or take advantage of this if for example, you want to reshape the leaves or no, work on the shape of it, or add more pigment or color. And just remember to make sure you select the color that is really unrelated to your subject or subjects that you learn to paying. To. Just imagine if you start with blockage will really get and be muddy later on. So don't be afraid to try the drop colors while the areas still wet and it will give you interesting effect. So wash is really similar to watercolor. But in watercolor you really have to bursts or that the white area as the highlight. But in this case, we are just a really exercising are different ways. You can use globs. And while the paint is still wet, I'm dropping in some darker tones, some brown to it. So it's kinda like having a Bachelor's or some areas are already are drying, then if you want to darker it or darken it instead of using block, try blue, this book right? Then, Medina colors. So now let us try to do some like a close who leave because I notice all of the leaves that I showed you. They are more open. So foreign 81 I try kinda like I'm painting the side of Aleve imagined so I don't believe so. I use them burn shadow and a little bit of yellow to it. And then just try to add some more watery Damon to width in order to allot enough for the backside. Ogden. 5. Fall leaves part 2: Know that I already mapped out colors for the leaves which I shown mostly the first base. Well as add more layers to finish them. For the maple leaf, I am trying to be super realistic to make painting. And I'm using a stippling method and placing more darker tone to the different areas. Here I mixed with darker red, orange to make the leaf pop in allowing you for more texture. Texture is one of the elements of art that will help your illustration or paintings come alive. Leaves can appear too flat without textures and details. So if you're aiming for a realistic, you can also stylize your leaves us an application of goulash brush techniques. I use dry brush method to come up with that shortest extra brushwork, leaving some gaps after color underneath the walls still be showing. And by doing this eudaimonia lots of water because you've already painted to first layer of the yellows. So you don't need a lot was to show it on top. And this one is the power of layering colors. So if you messed her to control your water, you will be confidently. Using colors are a bad thing. We colors and we'll go next to each other without disturbing the colors underneath. So this one is important technique that you can apply it and Sadat, not only in painting leaps for the stock order a handle on the leaf, I make some little bit of burnt sienna to go red orange that you use for the live a while ago. For the second base to make to leave appear more darker. And using the same color that you use for this talk are handled. Believe you can use it to make dots are little details around a leaf and that will bring the details to make them more like it's dry. Then it makes a little bit of light. Yellow was I made the same quiet little bit of yellow using the tip of the brush. I paint the veins of the leaf. You can let it dry for awhile and see if you need to add more darker colors. So one is try. You can see that it needs some more darker tones of direct orange. You can add more darker orange on the top as far as sometimes her color changes, so let it dry first and then afterwards. If you need afterwards you can evaluate you are painting if a means more layering. So here I am adding some more darker red orange to the leaf. But I learned already entire leaf, I'm still leaving God's allowing the yellow colors TO come out. And then you can add some like little burnt sienna mixed with the leaf color, ends cut or some little Brown's do it. I know I'm using it. Small brush to make the final details are telling you. So you can go well with details of the leaf. If you want it to be too realistic, take your time. But also you don't have to get all the details. If for example, you are using a reference. But if for example you want to learn to paint realistically, having to make sir at colors and textures. And burst works for layering will help you. Now pain relief. And for the last part, I'm just really finishing the size of the leaf. If you don't have angled brush, we could always use a very small flick barrage. Anything that has a tip daub going to help you make textures and a little bit of detail. Because if you use a big brush for like veins or Florida details, it is kinda hard because it can hold a lot of big men's brains are water. 6. Fall leaves part 3: Let's go to the last leaf. This is the heart-shaped believe, and I use burnt sienna for the paints. And you can achieve darker colors by adding some blue to it. If you didn't lie the shape of your leaf, you can always change it. Using a table may angled brush. I'm going to make a pointed curved shape of the leaf on its sides. So this will be the translation mid-winter shape. And it's got hard to see a really major change red. But that's one of the great benefit and advantage of guage. And like if you work on with a water color, you could really see the difference. So I'm just going to add some more dark values and switch to a smaller brush to make the cidal on the leaves more subtle are smoother. And it is so easy as that that you can explore with different shapes and try new things with wash. And as Paul color changes, you can use for observational scale to come up with different colors and mix together the colors with your preferred subject. You can also try this technique to, in a subject that you would like to pain or illustrate with gouache. Since washes really very versatile medium. 7. Fall landscape part 1: Fluorinated sample less paint, a fall landscape fors I use a tape to tape around a corner of the sketchbook page. And after that, I'm going to make two lines using my hand to roughly estimate and divide it for a better composition and formulas escape. And you can use this technique if you don't have a rulers or just want to have a rough sketch or like eyeballs to divide it by thirds. So this one, super light beans, That's all you need, you don't need. And solar really, because you're going to cover up later. So let's get into painting. And I'm just going to roughly sketch what my painting all look alike and is more like a forest painting with tree. So a pretty rough sketch to a baton, some ideas that I want to be painting. And later. So I'm going to start first as the background. And I'm going to be mixing some blues and a little bit of white or you can also use or water down. White. Like the background or the glass. Oh, just dropped some macro and color and this is really watery first. And once I'm done, I'm just going to locate a word allele as well. Go like bushes. And I'm going to place the trees. I'm going to add some more layer to the background and leaving some space for the sky. Just to make some lowest stippling sickening for little bushes or leaves from afar. They're sue Columbia. Look like that. It's giving you some distance or illusions too in this sense. So adding some really very watery consistency for now. And I'm going to add some roughly is where I'm going to put the leaves or the trees just candlelight dislocating where I would like to put the leaves on the trees later on. 8. Fall landscape part 2: So this time I'm going to be adding some more leaves and shadows to the leaves, going to like a dark brown for the back-burner. And I decided to switch brands is safe. Very tip brush. Just to explore some texture and fasten up the buying process. You can try this also, if you have all branch layer around it, you can create interesting effects. Yes, don't show your old brushes. It's ArrayList, they'll be useful. It can create a very amazing textures from mucinous for abstract or really rough. I'm painting. I'm back to filbert brush, add more colors for the background is still really pretty real like a sketch. But as you add more colors, you will go on to see that the painting we're really going to come to live. So I'm back to my angled brush and a made up pathways and a ground. I'm adding some more colors and some illusion of like branches for a tree ys later on. Because it's going to give the illusion that there are some foreign trees behind it. Very far area for the background. And now I add some more leaves as F feel like it needs some more leaves. Is they need some more, unlike bushy or awaited the leaves to give that impression that it's really, really fall. So I'm adding my own colors, browns, yellows, red, orange, oranges. And then I'm going to use the same colors that I use for your lives up there, for the ground to this brush, even though it's really all, is really great for making a rough batches. Now I'm working for the ground part and use my filbert brush too. Add some color. This really wet my brush and this sweep the color out to make that highway or iodine does get more wide to lighten. And so this way it's really a good technique also that you can try. If for example, you don't have that same glide or the attack anyone, you can use a water to lighten up your color. But it is not always the case. You can always use the water to lighten up, especially if you are working on details, are they are really still great for making highlights. So now we're working on the highway and making it more dark this time as in some more values. So the closer that highway and eyes the interrogators and farther it is much lighter. And then living some merged or like this or fallen leaves, for example. 9. Fall landscape details: Now it's time to paint the trees and branches. So if you have a black wash. You can make sandalwood browns and colors, humans, or made for the leaves and neurones. You can use that also for the trees. But early if you have primary colors like red, yellows, and blues can mix it together to make that a very dark color for the trees. So I'm using my angled brush to paint some trees. And because we already have some background, it's easier for the trees to boot up then the background and the trees afterwards. So the same learned are really aiming for a super photorealistic painting. Just putting some ideas and our sketchbook. That's important part. So I just use the tip of my brush, may angled brush to paint some trees. I said for us at the bottom, NSA go up. You can see the line, it becomes more thinner. So this exercise is really good for painting and precision to, and if you have small brushes, feel free to use it. And I'm going to add more layers for the leaves. And it's really great for adding more values, some areas that we need some more colors, and I use a light colors for the trees also for the very back to help the conveyor distance so that they are are really far and don't be afraid to play around with whatever colors that you already have or brushes play around with what it can give you. We're back again to my old brush and adding some more leaves to cover up some more areas. As I go. Nice textures to Lily was of the tree, especially if you don't want it to look super, super realistic and just want to get data, some values and dimension to your painting. So there's really great way to use this old brushes. These are really adding more details to the ground and to leaves. And there you go. We're done with the landscape painting for fall. This is a really great exercise to practice a layering technique and just getting to know guage and it doesn't have to be perfect, just get her prophecy and I'm just going to remove that day that I put burning paintings. So it is really complete a painting. So this is the outcome. The paper that I'm using is really only 98 pounds, so is really the standard for hogwash painting. So I highly recommend you to use it as watercolor paper if you like. But I know Muslims sketchbook with GMS with at least 200 bound, so it's okay, use whatever you have. And from there you will be able to learn how to use gouache as beginner or an expert already are disordered practice or if, for example, you're interested or curious. So there you go. The finished painting of the fall landscape. 10. Chestnuts: Knowing that you are done with leaves and landscape, Let's paint some chest tightness. And this time we will add going to make the outline of the entire chestnut. We were going to use the shape to paint directly. And this will create like a watercolor effects. And the reason why I incarceration try this method because the object is thrown and it has endorsing makes a blending of colors. There are really great for a wet and wet technique. So I drop some red ochres burned Shannon to make the chest and look more dimensional. It will really help you also with your water control because you are just outlining that Chestnut. You are forming it into the shape too. So I'm going to add more details. This is an error way to paint with, gosh. You can early painted with a watercolor style. And let's try another one this time you can use a lighter browns colors and you can drop some areas in the middle two to make the form and a lighter on the other side. This is Rayleigh gouache. Paintings sketch and you can paint as many justness as you like for this method, you want to make awake and trapping your selected colors in, for example, removing symbol water or excess color. If you want to preserve some of the highlights, you can always use your brush. Sorensen dwell, and then lift the colors. If you need some light areas for the shape. 11. Project: For the class project, you can paint any subject that you lie for fall or artemisia suny using wash paints, you can Bennion in your own style. And you can use your own reference. Or if, for example, you are looking for inspiration and you don't have a live reference with you. I highly recommend this thing, unsplash website for some inspiration in police free to use your own reference. If you lie, if for example, you want to use your own leaves are autonomous satellites and it's okay, Definitely. 12. Last Thoughts and Goodbye: Thank you so much for enrolling my glass. I hope Bueller's some painting, the new techniques that you can try for your sketchbooks. Nature has many inspirations that will bring you joy and new adventures for your artery. So please upload your project in the class gallery or tag me on Instagram. Have a great day and I'll see you again in the next class. Happy painting.
