1. Introduction: So you want to become a freelance writer? Maybe you love the idea off, working from home or anywhere else in the world while getting paid to write about topics and brands and you care about. But maybe you're worried that you don't have enough experience or you feel like you need a college degree or some special qualification to become a freelance writer. Or maybe you think it's too competitive and that no one will hire you. Well, I'm living proof that you don't need any of those things to start your career as a freelance writer. Hi, I'm Jesse Forest. I'm the founder of start copyrighting dot com, and I've been working as a freelance copywriter for the last 14 years. I've written for hundreds of different businesses and brands. I've written about every topic imaginable, everything from financial planning to dating workshops and even Japanese toothbrushes. But reading and writing wasn't always easy for me. My first year of school, I struggled to learn the alphabet, and I was diagnosed with having dyslexia, a learning condition that makes reading and writing very difficult. I almost failed my final high school English exam. I've never been the university and I don't have a journalist degree. When I first decided to become a freelance writer, I had no idea what I was doing. In fact, I quickly ran out of money and act upon my only writing instrument, my laptop computer, just to pay my rent. That kind of desperation forced me to get out of the house and start marketing my services . Why Become A Freelance Writer?: So why become a freelance writer? You know, there are many reasons to become a freelance writer which cover in this video. But there's also reasons not to become a freelance writer writer. Why some people shouldn't do it. So let's begin with reasons to become a freelance writer. First of all, you can work from anywhere right now. I'm working in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Now I have plans the next couple of months of travel to Japan and then Indonesia, all while continuing my freelance writing business. So the freedom to work from home or travel his tremendous and a big reason why a lot of people do it. You could be your own boss. Choose your own hours. He might be a morning person you'd rather write in the morning or a night owl. You'd rather burn the midnight oil. The choice is yours as long as you get your work are submitted to your client or your publisher by the agreed deadline so you can work part time as a side hustle. You could start out writing an hour or a few hours a day around your job or current schedule or commitments or family, and you can certainly start out as part time and then slowly grow your business to the point where you may be able to commit your job. I'm sorry you may be out. Leave your job and I do this full time. You could make a good living writing about topics that you love and care about. So as a freelancer, your the boss. It's your decision, whether you take on a client or not, and whether the topic that you're going to write about interest you are not. So it's really up to you whether or not you write for a client or a topic or not. You also get to educate others and share your knowledge with the world. So as a freelancer you get to obviously right and have your work published, whether it's online or offline. In magazines and newspapers and people around the world, I get to read your works. That's truly exciting and a great way to have your message shared. So there's some of the great reasons to become a full inch right up, and I want to talk about some of the reasons why you should not become a freelance writer. So if you're broke. We're desperate desperately in native money. I'd recommend not becoming a freelance writer. You instead maybe want to get a job or find some other means that you're familiar with food with making money before you make the late. You don't want to enter this business with a desperation mindset, because that's going to be a turn off with potential clients as well. So I would avoid that. If you're broke right now, becoming a freelance writer, you think it's a quick and easy way to make money similar to the previous reason. You know, if you're just doing it to make money, then I think you're in the game for the wrong reasons. You want to become a freelance writer because you love to write and you want to share your message with world, not because you just want to make money out of the profession. If you're not a good writer and you don't aspire to be a good writer, then I also think it's not for you. You know, if you can always develop your skills, your writing skills, I, you know, certainly wasn't a great rider to begin with. But through practice and perseverance, I was able to develop my writing skills, but you've got to be willing to do that. If you're not, then this isn't for you. If you see this more of us, Ah, hobby and not a real business. So if you say freelance writing is kind of a hobby that really cared too much about or the unit is sometimes, then this is probably not the business for you. The people that really succeed at those at sea. For that writing is a really business because aside from the writing part, you still need to do your bookkeeping or get someone to do that for you. You need to market yourself, get yourself out there. There's so many components to this business, aside from writing, you need to be aware of that is, if you're going to do it. So it's a It is a real business and not as some hobby 4. Traits You Need To Succeed: I also want to discuss with you some of the traits, the helpful traits that you need to succeed as a freelance writer, just some of that loves to write and that you're fairly good in it or you're willing to become better at it. That's great. That's the right mindset. You know you love to write, you're interested in writing. That is a good try toe, Have you say freelance writing as a real business, not a hobby, which I've mentioned already. You're going to put yourself out there by social media and other online and offline marketing channels to get yourself out there, become known, build a reputation and actually bring on paying clients. That's very important to market yourself if you're reliable, friendly and easy to work with. I've had some my clients, my repeat clients that have hide me again and again over the years, they've said the reason they keep coming back to me is because I'm easy going easy to work with, an unreliable aside for being a good writer. They value those traits as well, so you want to have those traits as a writer, too. He also able to accept feedback and criticism. Not everybody you write for is gonna love what you've written. You need to be able to handle criticism, sometimes harsh criticism and fade back off your work and be able to handle that responsibly and be able to make amends where necessary. Not every critic is gonna be correct. Some are wrong, but you need to be able to listen and handle criticism if you're gonna make it in this business. 5. Common Myths Debunked: So in this video I want to debunk some of the common misconceptions and myths that people have about becoming a freelance writer. And some of these really sabotaged people from ever getting started because they believe these misconceptions about being a freelance right? And the 1st 1 is which I've covered briefly in the introduction that you need writing experience you absolutely do not need right here. Experience. It can help, obviously, if you have that already, but it's not a requirement. You can develop it on the job as you start writing and working with different clients. So I didn't have riding experience when I started. A lot of my colleagues did not. It is a bonus. It is a plus, but it's not a requirement. You need a college degree like a journalist degree or special qualifications. Now you do not do not need special qualifications. I've never been to university. I don't have a college degree, and yet I was able to build a career as a successful freelance writer, and I believe you can do You don't need a college degree. You must be a young professional. Not true. I know plenty of writers who are retirees who are in their fifties, sixties, even seventies. Also know people that are stayed home moms or dads who are working on this as well. So you don't need to be young. Teoh. Start this business. I myself on 35 years old, and you know I continue. I want to continue this career probably well into my old age, and you're certainly able to. You must be a native English speaker. That's not true. I know plenty of writers weight. English is their second language, sometimes even their third language. Some of the European freelance writers out there that have mastered English and they're able to become freelance writers or continue their careers. So it's not a requirement to be a native English speaker as long as you can right proper English, then that's certainly enough are you need lots of money or equipment to get started. That's not true, either. You know, you really only need a computer where that's a laptop computer or a desktop computer. You need access to the Internet and to Google docks or some kind of, you know, word processing program, like Microsoft Word or something similar, or even if you don't have that. You can use Google docks as I mentioned, and you're in business. You don't need lots of money or equipment or capital to get started. You can start very affordably. As a freelance writer, you have to work for peanuts or low pay. You know there's content mills out there. There's companies will pay you one center word or even less. You don't have to write for those people. There's lots of people in this world who do not value freelance writers and our abilities and don't think we deserve adequate payment. But we avoid those people. You don't have to work for them. There are so many writing jobs and opportunities out there that you can if you're able to market yourself, which I'll be covering in a future video. In this course, if you're able to market itself in position yourself, you'll be able to attract the right paying clients. You don't have to work for peanuts. You have to compete with thousands of other freelance writers online. It's true there are thousands in fact, hundreds of thousands of freelance writers online, but you don't have to compete with them all. I'm gonna show you how to position yourself and how to choose a nation how to be a big fish in a small pond instead of a small fishing of big pond, I'm going to show you how to stack the odds in your favor. 6. Different Types Of Freelance Writers: types of freelance writers. Did you know that there are over 30 different types off freelance writing that you could do not going to cover all of them in this class or in this video? There's just too many. Instead, we're going to focus on the top three types of Freeland writing that are popular in demand and that are achievable for beginners to get started in. So the first step in your journey of becoming a freelance writer is deciding on which of these three types off freelance writers you want to become. Now you don't become any of these types of writing. That's fine. It's up to you to then go on research out of the 30 different types out there, which one you want to become. But I am going to give you what I recommend as the top three different types. The 1st 1 is copywriters. Okay, just like myself, I'm a copywriter and a copywriter or freelance copywriter is someone who writes words that persuades a target audience to take action, whether that's buying a product or service, subscribing to a new center or clicking a button. Now what do they write? Well, copywriters write all kinds of copy. Everything from Web site copy, landing pages, video script cells, pages, brushes, direct mail, Facebook ads, Google ads, idioms and email campaigns. Who hires copywriters and why do they hire them? Well, copywriters are hired by all kinds of people from business owners, corporations, entrepreneurs, marketing professionals, individuals and mawr. The reason people hire them is to help them sell more of their products and services or to convert their website visitors into lead sales and customers. So copyrighting is great, and I've been a copywriter for 14 years. If you're someone that enjoys riding persuasive copy that gets people to take action, I highly recommend it. Content writers is the second type off writing now, often confused with copyrighting automated clarification about the difference. Kaka writings about writing words that inspire people to take action, whereas content writing is about creating quality content that educates, informs, entertains, inspires and builds relationships with an audience off radio. So that's the crucial difference between the two. So you often say them confused online, where people say we're looking to hire a copywriter or content writer, they're not the same thing, so it's important to understand the difference So what do they write? Those content writers? Everything from blood posts, articles, newsletters, social media updates and content, white paper reports, e books and so much more. And the people that hire them, our marketing agencies, business owners, entrepreneurs, bloggers, individuals. And the reason I hired them is to create relevant content that people will love and share or love to share. Clients want their content to rank on Google, to attract an audience and to sell their products and services. So that's why people hire content writers and content writers. Content writing is great. If you love educating and forming inspiring people, then it's a great type of writing to get into. It's certainly very in demand, you know, blogging, article writing all of that very much in demand. Nowadays, feature writers is the third type of writing. The last time we're going to talk about and feature writers, write articles for online publications and print. A feature story typically is a long in depth article that's written using a mix of news writing and narrative store storytelling techniques. A za freelance feature writer, you will need to pitch your own story ideas to editors in order to land paid writing gigs. So feature writers. What are they right? News stories, articles, interviews and who hires them well, editors of online websites and print publications like newspapers and magazines. These are premium and often well paid gigs that typically go to writers who already have a solid relationship with the editor off that publication. Why do people hired them? Because they have pitched a good story idea that focuses on the topical subject or has a potential to go viral? So that's why people hire feature writers. And if you're someone that wants to write for things like a websites like Business, insider or even Buzzfeed. Or maybe you have some favorite magazines that you read or newspaper newspapers or other types of print publications. If you'd like to write for them, then you know, look into how you might become a writer for one of those publications. So this brings us to the end of this video, and I want to ask you the question. What type of writer are you? What type of writing will you choose out of those three? That's something you want to decide sometime soon. If you're gonna pursue freelance writing now, I'm gonna help you out by giving you two tips for making that choice. The 1st 1 is it should be a type of writing. You either have experiencing already or one that you came to learn more about and try. OK, but also should be a type of writing that people in your chosen nation values and pays for . We'll be covering nations in the next video. First decide what type of freelance writer will you become? 7. Choose A Profitable Niche: choose a profitable neesh. This is Step two. In the process of becoming a freelance writer, Step one was deciding on what type of writer will you become copywriter, content writer or a feature writer? Now we're gonna look at writing nations, and we want to make sure we choose a profitable neesh. First of all, let's look at some of these profitable writing nations, So some of these are better be technology insurance, health and wellness, finance and investing, legal real estate investing, professional development, self help travel, digital marketing, nonprofits, public relations, entertainment, politics, dating and relationships. Now they're literally hundreds of nations out there if you really investigate and research . But then there's also a sub nation. So these air nations within an H some examples here for you. Just look at finance and investing. We've got submissions like Blockchain and crypto, which right now is really hot, really trending, a very popular niche that the world is talking about constantly. So obviously they need a lot of writers to write about Blockchain and crypto well said accounting, mortgages, banking, financial planning, personal finance and stock market trading. Now, if you also look at a completely different Neesh. This one is health and wellness. The notices a lot of sub nations there to like fitness, bodybuilding, dieting, white loss, nutrition and mental health. Now, as what we're showing here, you could choose one neesh and just be the go to write it for that. Or you could choose one of the sub nations and write for a very specific audience as well. It's really up to you. So once you look at these nations and decide which nations you're interested in writing for or that you might have experience or knowledge in already, then we want to identify the ideal clients in those nations. And I want to give you a scenario. Basically, you want to look for and work with clients or companies that can afford your writing services. We don't want to work with people that have no budgets or, you know, just don't value freelance writers. So don't look for the best type of clients who can really afford our services and value us . So let's say you chose health and wellness is your neesh. Imagine who of these two types of companies would make a better client. Would it be Jane Smith, the health blogger with one woman blogger who has a small blogging, a small following which we make the best client all. Would Whole Foods market the $1,000,000,000 company with, you know, hundreds or thousands of stores around the world who would be more likely to afford our writing services. So clearly it's a bigger company because they have a much bigger marketing budget to really pay whatever rights, We probably throw it them. But I want to point out here the goal is in tow work with only $1,000,000,000 companies, and that could be quite difficult if you have no writing experience and also very intimidating. But the idea here is in The point I'm trying to make is we want to look for clients within these nations or clients in general. We can afford to pay for our writing services, so it's very important to factor in when you're looking at potential clients. Now I do have a criteria, my ideal client criteria, and this is really a four point kind of list that I look for when I'm looking for clients. The 1st 1 is that there are already investing money in advertising or content creation so if they're already doing that, then it's a good chance they're likely or toe higher. Freelance writers like myself, they already charge their own clients decent money. I do right for a lot of accounting firms, and they might charge their average client between four and $6000 for their services. So that's a good indicated to me that they have money to spend, you know, for a small time, one person entrepreneur and they're charging a very small amount of money, they probably won't have much money left over to hire you. We're looking for companies or individuals that are charging their own clients lots of money, or they have revenues of at least 500,000 to $1 million per year. So a decent sized company might have that kind of revenue, and they're more likely to have a budget to hire writers now. No 100% strict on that. I've worked with clients that have a much smaller budget, but ideally we're looking for ones that have a large budget that more likely the pay better , and they can afford us between 10 and 50 employees. Now this one is flexible as well it really depends. But it is a good kind of range to look for when you're looking for companies within your nation to work with, because that means that they're paying a whole bunch of staff, and they probably do have good revenue, and they're more likely to afford our services. Some examples of these types of clients might be financial planners, accounting firms or even property advisors. That's in my experience, some of the clients I've worked for. So that's really just a good idea off how to find a You know, all the different natures out there that exists the submissions, and then we look at the best types of clients within those nations. 8. Generalist vs Specialists : generalists versus specialists. Now should you write for all nations and anyone who approaches you about writing for them as a generalised, a generalised freelance writer? Or should you become a specialist and this rightful one or a few specific nations? Right now in this video, we're gonna cover the pros and cons off doing both. And I'm also going to help you decide on which one you might want to become so reasons to be a generalists. Now, this is a good choice for beginners with no experience. You know, you start out writing for any and old nations, and then as your experience and your confidence grows and your interest developed, you might find Wow, I really like this particular nation really enjoyed writing for that. Then you might decide to specialize later on. So the pros off being a generalised is more variety. So you're writing for so many different businesses and topics that the variety makes for really interesting work. There's more job opportunities. Obviously, if you're opening your doors to every type of client in business and topic, it's gonna be more work out there because you're a generalist on and you also not limiting yourself toe. One niche with some people are terrified of doing, you know, boxing themselves in you. Also not limiting yourself toe one niche. You know, some people are really worried about doing that and feel like they're boxing themselves in . We're gonna talk about why that's not true in just a few moments. Reasons to be a specialist, you know, this is a good choice of people that already have experience, knowledge, expertise or a real passion for a particular nation or subject matter. So those kind of people might b'more drawn to specialist right? And they might think, Wow, I love and know so much about this particular niche. I'm gonna just specialize in that. Now the reasons to become a specialist actually outweigh the reasons to become a generalist . You know, there's so many reasons, such as clients preferred a higher special Soviet generalists. You know, if you're a company looking for let's say you're a law firm and you're looking for someone to write blogged posts for your lawn, your law firm website and you find a freelance writer right there and that's exactly what they do. And they portfolios that show examples that you love for other law firms that they've written blogged posts about. You're much more likely to hire that writer, then a generalised, she says. You know, I'm Jesse Forests are right for any an old nations, and my portfolio is kind of a whole bunch of random, different examples. And none of them, you know, about Laurel Legal ESO specialists definitely can attract. You know more specialised types of clients. You'll become the go to writer in that industry. You know, as a law firm, you really happy with this writing. You have hide that done great work. You're more likely to tell your friends, colleagues, competitors and suddenly that specialist writer is now going to become, You know, the go to Ryder for that industry, which could be very profitable. As a specialist, you can charge a premium prices for your work. You might get less clients, but you can charge more because you're such a specialist and you have insights and knowledge specialized knowledge for that particular nation industry. You spend less time on research because you already understand the industry and the topic that you're writing about. It's also less competitive. You become a big fish in a small pond. There's only gonna be so many, you know, our freelance writers that specialize in writing blood post full law firms out there. So you become a big fish, as opposed to a small fish who writes everything like the generalised do, competing with thousands of other generalists. Freelance writers are. Your portfolio becomes more relevant, and you're more likely to stand out in a competitive marketplace because your portfolio is so niche and so relevant to those clients. So there's some of the reasons why you might consider becoming a specialist. It's not for everyone, but it might be for you. Now you might wonder. Well, I don't limit myself if I specialize in, you know, blood post writing for law firms. Am I limiting myself? Well, you're not exactly living in yourself, because remember, some of these industries or niches are massive, you know, and they have thousands and thousands of companies within them all around the world. Who, one point or another, gonna need some writing help eso. You know, some of these industries are very large and then think of all of the sub nations within those nations or industries as well that you could write for, too. So don't feel like you're limiting itself. That's another myth about being a specialist right out. Now, how do you decide you might be watching this video now? Thinking voice sound great. I don't know if I should be a specialist or a generalised. Well, to help you decide, but a couple of things to consider. So you should be a specialist freelance writer. If you have experience or knowledge in a few in one or a few nations already, or you're insanely passion about a specific nature or maybe a couple of nations, that's a good you know. If those a true for you, then, yes, specialists, writing might be your choice. You should be a generalised freelance writer if you're beginning with no idea what to specialize in or you're curious about lots of different nations. So it's up to you to decide. Are you going to be a generalised or a specialist? Freelance writer 9. How To Build Your Portfolio From Scratch: how to build your portfolio from scratch. You need a portfolio and portfolio examples to show potential clients that you're capable of writing the type of content or copy that they need. So having a few examples? A few relevant examples in either the type of writing that you're going to be doing or the industry that you're gonna be targeting is way better and way more effective than having hundreds of random, you know, examples off different types of unrelated writing, like poems or creative stories or some college essay you write 20 years ago. That's much better to have a few select and relevant example. It's that will impress potential clients in their nation than hundreds of unrelated ones. It's a good thing to remember, so less is really more so. How do you create a portfolio example when you don't have any clients yet? You might be wondering, Well, there's a few different strategies you can follow to make that happen. The 1st 1 is to offer to write for companies in your nation, your target nation you selected for free. Now this might be friends or colleagues or people you know in the nation. Now, why would you write for free? Well, you're writing for free to gain the experience to gain a port. Follow example and a testimonial, hopefully from that that person you've written for for free. So when you set up this kind of arrangement, you want to make sure that you set clear boundaries on what you will do and how much writing you'll do and what they'll do in exchange for your free work, which again you want a poor follow example you can display. And obviously, if you can ask for a testimonial as well, those two are gonna be worthwhile. For a beginner copy, begin a writer. You could also write a part, for example, for a made up product or service in your neesh. That's totally fine to do. You know, people are interested in seeing your writing abilities they want to read. You know you're writing because they want to see if you can do what this style of writing that they need. So writing for a made up product or service is fine as long as it's covering and showing your type of writing your capable off. You can also write an article on a trending topic in your neesh. I mentioned big coins in Cryptocurrency before. That's a really popular nation. If it's one that you want to write for, then why not? And let's say you want to be a content writer. Why not then find you know why not write articles about that topic to show people what you're capable off? Write and publish those in your portfolio to show people what you're capable off. A very good strategy right there and number four is go to a job site like up work dot com or probe blogger dot com. Ford's That's Jobs. And so you go to these job websites are where clients of posting jobs all the time for freelance writers, and you look at a job, let's say, typing Bitcoin, white paper writer or Bitcoin, or whatever type of industry I'm going for or style of writing and then find a job. I read the job description and then I pretend I've been hired for that job, right? I read the detail job description of what they want, how they want the report delivered, and then I go away and I write it now. I may not win the job, but I'm gaining valuable experience and also a pot follow example. And who knows if I think that's particularly good, I might send that sample to the actual company and see what they think again, with no expectation that I'll be hired. But I'm really just following a real life job and on assignment that's been posted against a valuable writing experience and a port follow example. So those are just some great ways that you can get started creating and building your own freelance writing portfolio. Even if you don't have any clients yet, you might be thinking, Well, I don't know how to write a white paper. I don't know how to write. You know, the style of writing. Yet you know, what'll I do. How do I gain that experience to actually be able to write? It's a very good question. Let's say you want to write blogged posts about health and wellness. You know you want to write blow post about health and wellness. I would find the top health and Wellness Blog's, and I'd start reading all of the popular articles in the In that block, right or that website. I would then read those and I would mimic that style of writing. I've read them a few times. I'd get an understanding of sense with style of writing that's working. And then I would emulate and try to adapt my style to fit that some people even recommend writing out other people's work by hand, not because you're gonna publish it or plagiarize it, but as a way of internalizing their style of writing so you can learn and adopted for yourselves. That's one way that you can learn how to write. You could also just practice and practice and practice. Read of that you can about writing. You know, whatever type of writing you wanna become rid of. You can about say, blow post writing or copy writing and then start practicing. That's what I used to do when I began. I just practice at night, writing, writing, writing until I developed the confidence to then got there and published my work in a portfolio. He also don't be afraid to ask friends or family trusted friends or family or colleagues, even other writers, to get feedback on your work. You know, tell him you want on his feedback on your writing and that feedback and help you grow and develop as a writer as well. So don't be afraid to share your work with others and gain that valuable feedback. All right, so you created these port follows samples or examples, you're ready to publish them. You don't have a website yet, though. So where you gonna publish these port? Follow examples you've created? Well, there's two places I'd recommend. The 1st 1 is Google Drive. You know, it's free to sign up to Google. You may even have a Google drive account already. If you have a Gmail address so you can senate for Google drive and then you can, you know, upload your documents and then shared those documents in, um, create a link for each of those documents or an entire folder of your examples. You can simply send people that link so they can view your portfolio. You could also use a free service called Content Lee, which is available that constantly dot com. In fact, two different. You are a little bit longer, and I've made that clickable inside the workbook. So you download the workbook with this class, you have to click that and use constantly to create your own writing portfolio. So there's two places you can use to upload your work, and that's really how you create and upload and share your own writing portfolio. 10. How To Build Your Freelance Website: how to build your freelance Web site. Nowadays, you need a website. If you want potential clients to take you seriously now, you might have a website already, but I really believe you need a one specifically for freelance writing. You know, I talkto writers before who their authors or their write poetry and have websites or WordPress sites built for that. They said, Jesse, can I just add a page on there about how I also do content riding or copyrighting? My answer is always no. Clients don't want to be confused when they come to your site. Tennessee. Oh, she writes. Here she writes poetry, and you know, there's always random stuff on there that's unrelated to what they're looking for. So even if you have a website already, build another one specifically for your freelance writing business. The great news is it's never been easier to create a website. Even if you're someone who's a technophobe like may there certainly options available out there inexpensive, affordable website builders and domain name registration hosting. I'm gonna walk you through exactly the ones I recommend in this video and show you how to get started. So here are the steps for building your freelance Web site. The 1st 1 is to register a domain name and hosting Choose a Dragon Drop website build on. I'm gonna recommend two of them and then create your content and build your website. Now. Don't spend too much time building the perfect website. I've seen people myself included guilty of this spending months and months and months fiddling with a logo design or fiddling with the theme instead of actually building it, getting it done and then, you know, getting themselves out there in front of potential clients. Just get something up that's pretty decent. Toe looks half great. I just get something up, and then you can always tweak it and improve it over time. It's a good lesson for us all. So what's in the name? What kind of domain names should you register for your website? You know the first thing. I've got a few tips for you. The 1st 1 is, if you can, where possible, Get the dot com domain name, you know, don't get dot author or dot blogger dot co People don't remember those people don't even know those you want to get something like a dot com. You know what kind of domain names are good for writers? I think your name is is a great one. I started out with just jesse forest dot com. Still have that website today Don't use it too much. I've evolved since then, but that suited me for years. Now That's not available. If you have a common name that's already been taken, add the word rights to it. So for me it would be Jesse Forest rights dot com. You know, that's equally just as good. A lot of writers use that. You also might use the type of writing new specializing, and I also own the Web copywriters dot com. As you know, the type of writing that I was specializing in for many years so you could do the same thing. Or you might use it, um, user name that's in line with niche that your specializing in, for example, you might be the health writer dot com that would also be suitable for you. Sorry. Lots of ideas there on what remained him. You want to choose again, you might change it. It doesn't really matter. Don't look for the perfect domain and just get something up so you can get moving on getting clients now. What about hosting and registering the domain name? Well, you're in luck because I recommend and I have a special discount for people watching this video. I recommend Blue host for website hosting. You know, with the special link that I have inside of the workbook which you can find in the class dashboard. Download that workbook. There's a special link in there where you can get hosting for just $3 per month, which is a crazy deal. Very inexpensive. They'll host you entire website and you can also get a free domain name with that deal. So pretty awesome. Just download that work for quick on the link and you can get access to a free domain name and $3 a month hosting. Now, what about website builders? What are you gonna use to build your website? I'm gonna recommend to different website builders in this video by the very easy dragon drop even for technophobes like may to use. So, um, both of these come with free trials and again it very easy to use. They also have lots of support and video tutorials and training. So even if you get lost, there's always someone you could reach out to help you. The 1st 1 is squarespace dot com, and then I have a special link again inside of the workbook. Click on that link. You do get a special deal with Squarespace. If you do decide to use them. They're great company. A lot of freelancers use them, including some my friends. You will have to use wicks dot com. Wix is a great website buildup, very easy to use. In fact, my dad, who's in his sixties, told himself and used weeks are to build his very own store, and he's now selling T shirts and other merchandise on that store website so my dad could do it. You certainly can do it as well. So decide if you want to use Squarespace again. Have a link in the workbook. If you want a special discount or you could use Wicks, either of those is gonna work for you. Now what pages should you have on your website and what should be on? Some of those pages will tell you now what pages I recommend you have. You could get away with just having one page. But I do recommend a few more pages. These are just the essential pages I think any freelancers should have on their website. And then after that, I'm gonna walk you through and actually show you two different websites, one of them being my own and give you a quick tour and how those pages are laid out. And I'm gonna show you what my friends, freelance Web sites as well. So the first page, I think is essential is your home page. And on there, you explain who you are, what you do and who you help. Then there's the about page. People know more about the person behind the business. Now, on that page, don't go on and on about how you love to write. You've always been a writer. People in care, you know, you want to explain the many ways you're riding, benefit and help your clients because people care more about themselves, and then what you do about yourself. So you want to spend how you can help them on your about page services. This just explains the different services that you offer the writing services you want to talk about those and also who your ideal clients are. So what you do and who you help, you know. So what you do being the sources who you help being clients, That's what we might have. Enough services page portfolio That's pretty self explanatory. Just have all the examples make them clickable and easy for clients to see. You might even have a little byline under some of them, explaining what that sample is before they even click on it. The last page. Very important is your contact page. This is where you might have multiple ways to conduct you. I personally have a form people can feel out to inquire. We also have my email address in my phone number for those people that just want to have a quick phone call with me as well, so give multiple ways to conduct. You might even have links to some of your social media on those pages as well. All right, so now let's move on. I'm gonna jump on the computer and show you a few different freelance writing websites to give you an idea on how to lay out your own website. 11. What To Charge and How To Get Paid: what to charge and how to get paid. One of the biggest questions that freelance writers have is what should charge for this type of work I'm doing and what's the going rate, what other people get paid for this kind of work. So in this video, I'm going to share with you the different rates for different types of freelance writing, so we'll show the actual, you know, po word and po our rates for the three different types of freelance writing that we've been talking about now, the important disclaimer. Just because I'm sharing these rates with you, there is no guarantee that you will get paid these type of rates. You know what you earn as a freelance writer depends on many different factors, and these factors will discuss right now, so they're not 1st 1 The most important one is your level off experience. If you're a beginner who's just getting started, then you'll be charging less. Generally speaking, think of it is. Think of it as on the job experience. If you're more experienced and have a decent portfolio taken, generally, charge higher rates. What you earn will also depend on the type of writing you're doing some types of writing paid better than others. Kaka riders continuously charge more than content writers. The number three. It also depends on what niche market you're working in. Some nations are more profitable than others and also depends what your client can afford to pay. Some clients have much bigger budgets and will pay more than other types of clients. Now to figure out what you should charge, you can do some more research. You can look at what other writers air charging for the same type of work and an easy way to do that is to simply ask those writers what they're charging. You know, you could join Facebook groups that have lots of freelance writers in it. Join those groups and just create a post hospital. Hey, what are you charging for a bloke post? You could also Google search to a Google search. I know. When I first started, I typed in website copywriters. Sidney and I found other writers in my my region that were I looked at their rate, looked at their website to send them emails. I asked them what they were charging, and it allowed me to help establish my rates as well. You don't look at what the market is paying for this kind of writing, and that's easy to do. You can look a job boards that you know the clients of posting actual jobs and look at what they're offering to pay for those types of writing, and that should help you decide what people are only are for those types of jobs. Now let's look at some of the rights. So freelance content writers for beginner you can look to expect are between three cents and six cents per word, or 15 to $30 per hour. Generally speaking, foreign experienced content writer, you might get between 13 and 20 cents per word that you write. You might earn anywhere from $65 to $100 per hour. Now I want to stress this is one source from leaving work behind dot com. There are other sources that might say something different, so it's up to you to do your own research. I'm just giving you guidelines and ideas here. What about freelance copywriter rates? Well, for beginners, we generally don't charge per word as a copywriter. I've never charged per word. Um I charge per hour or a fixed price for a particular gig or job. We'll talk about that in a moment. A beginner might anywhere between 25 to $50 per hour. Experienced freelance copywriter. My earn between 150 to $175 per hour. Again, this is just from one source over it. Copy hackers dot com. Other sources might say different. Just a general idea for you off the type of rights copywriters of earning. What about feature writers? For beginning, They might earn anywhere from two cents to 10 cents per word. For an experience feature writer. It might be 25 to 45 cents per word, and that's because freelance writers typically don't charge per hour. They're charged. Either are per word or a fixed price for a particular job. So Climb might say will pay you X amount of dollars to write. You know this 500 word or 1000 word article, or they might offer you her word right. And these rights have to shine up generally for online feature writing. Print rates for offline publications compay similar or even double are the online rates. So on that source comes from a friend has been feature writing for 10 years. She tells me about those rates. Also want to show you a website If you are interested in becoming a feature writer, this website will help you by telling you what different publications are paying writers paperwork, which is pretty cool. So Goda, who pays writers dot com You can see for all the different publications you know what different publications are pain, which is pretty exciting. You can see what people are paying, so it should you charge per hour per word or a fixed price. It's going very depending on the type of writing you're doing and also the type of client or industry that you're working in. Copywriters and content riders usually charge a fixed price per job or per hour. As a copywriter myself, I've always charged and quite id a fixed price per job, And that means I have to estimate myself on how long it's gonna take me to find out whether or not that's gonna be worthwhile. Whereas feature writers are a little bit different, do you usually charge per word or a fixed price per job? Okay, so that's the difference I prefer, as I said, Fix right fix price Quiting on The reason for that is it's less messy. There's no arguing with the client over how many hours it took me or how many words are truly necessary, and therefore they can try and negotiate and get it, you know, lower after the fact. They also prefer up my clients because they know up front what it's going to cost them before they decide to go ahead on. And there's no surprises later, with some unexpected large invoice. Sometimes you will need to estimate the job, depending on what type of writing that you're doing. And here's how you do that. Here's how to estimate a job. It really comes down to deciding on what your hourly rate is. So let's say you're charging $50 per hour. That's you're going right. Then you calculate your hourly rate times a number of hours. You expect the job to take you. So let's say $50 per hour. Your times in that by 10 hours, you expected to take you. You're then gonna quite the client. $500. Okay, now I sometimes might even add 10 or 20% on top of that for any hours that I haven't really accounted for. So if I do seem to go over, I'm still getting paid. Now you might think, Well, I don't know how many hours it's gonna take me. I've never had any clients before, never time to myself. So what I do in that scenario? So this is how you estimate when you're not sure. Break down the project into its phases, then estimate how much time each phase will take you. For example, a typical phases for May might be research writing, the first draft client communication and then revisions our client revisions. They might request changes or feedback so I might say, two hours of research. Five hours. First draft to take me to write client communication one hour and two hours for revisions. That's a total of 10 hours, and again I might throw on a couple extra hours or 10 or 20% to factor in any hours I might not expect. Now, if you don't know again, I don't know how many hours it's gonna take. May Then I guess, for the first job, guess and, you know, sending your quite and then time yourself as you're writing. And as you're working on the project, use a time tracker. So you do have an actual, you know, go to time for the all the other jobs you're gonna get in the future. So just some ideas on how to estimate for a job when you need to know. How do you get paid? Well, that really depends with content. Riley and Copyrighting. Once a client is agreed on, the quite I recommend quiting or invoicing upfront and asking for 100% payment up front. And not everybody is comfortable Panyu upfront. If they don't know, you might negotiate and say, Well, we'll pay you 50% up front. And if I'm a new writer, I might accept that if I'm a beginner amounts okay, future percent up front and 50% on completion. But I always ask for 100% up front and then negotiate from there. So I felt content writers and copywriters. That's something you could try and see what happens and then adjust and go from there. Now, with feature writing payment terms of more complicated and generally clients do not pay up front. In fact, you can. Generally speaking, you can request payment within 60 to 90 days off, sending in your invoice. So once you've agreed on the payment or what you're quoting for that job or accepted the job, you can generally get paid within 60 to 90 days again. It depends on the client that you're working for, so that's how you can get paid. 12. Sales and Marketing Mindset: sales and marketing mindset. So sales and marketing are really the two words that most freelancers hate. You know, most freelances, I believe, introverted by nature. That's why we're freelances, because we want toe work for ourselves and by ourselves and not have to interact with too many other people. So the idea of becoming a sales person and having to, you know, sellouts, services or sell ourselves can feel scary and overwhelming for us introverts. But the good news is it doesn't have to be that way. You know, learning to sell yourself and market your services is crucial If you're gonna achieve success as a freelance writer, you do need to change your mindset about it, and you do need to become effective at it. But the good news is, once you change your mind, you can actually learn toe love, sales and marketing because it's not what you think it is. A lot of people when they think of a sales person, they probably imagine some sleazy, scam, me manipulative person that uses high pressure sales tactics to convince once expect unsuspecting PayPal to buy stuff they don't want or need. But that's not who we are. And that's not how you have to become to become an effective cells person of your business . And we're gonna cover exactly the minds that you need. And what sells really is for freelances in this video. So let's start with my definition off sales and marketing. What is marketing? Marketing is about letting potential clients know who you are and what you can do for them on a consistent basis in a variety off ways like email, social media, what its sales sales is, the process of turning a qualified prospect into a paying client and notice, I said qualified. It's very different. We're not looking to just sell everybody and try and push people into buying our stuff. When not a qualified prospect for writing services so qualified, we'll talk more about that in just a moment. The first truth, the first mindset shift you have to think about, is that you're offering a valuable and in demand service. You're not a manipulative sales person offering a worthless product that nobody wants. You're a business owner, offering a valuable and in demand professional writing service that people and companies desperately need. You know, you're not some you know sales person selling some worthless product. What we're offering our services a legitimate, valuable and in demand services needed by companies, thousands, even millions of companies all around the world. We need to remember that. So that's the first truth. Truth number two is you're not selling anything. Your qualifying. You gotta flip the script because you're not selling anything, really. Your qualifying people to see if they're the right fit and if you can help them and the best way to qualify someone is over the phone during a discovery call. Now feature writers should email not call cases the difference. They're feature writers. You probably won't be doing Discovery call to be sending emails of your questions. But for everybody else for copywriters and content, writers are highly recommend getting on the fine. This is one of the best ways off selling, or I should say, qualifying yourself to potential clients and also just winning the my vow. You know, I've had to compete against dozens of writers in the past, and I usually win not because of my reputation, but because I'm willing to get on the phone and asked my potential client questions. Build report and I became just the logical choice for them, often beating out a dozen other writers, and often when I'm charging more for them as well, let's talk about discovery cold. 13. The Discovery Call: This is how it works When someone expresses interest in my writing services. Maybe they sent me an email message on Facebook or they fill out the enquiry form on my contact page on my website. I then invite them to jump on a 15 minute discovery. Call with me. Now, After breaking the ice for a few minutes, I start the call with I say something like this. The purpose of this calls to find out what your needs are and whether or not I can help you . So let me start by asking you. And then I go into my questions. Now notice what I said there. Whether or not I can help you. So I'm saying up front, I don't know where the right fit for each other. I want to find out on this call whether or not where the right fit, whether I can actually help you. Now compare that with all I'm the best rider. We can definitely help you, you know. Please hire us. No, It flipped the script. Interview them, qualified them. Find out they're the right fit for your business, not the other way around. And you will take back the power bi so much more effective. So I say These are some of the questions I asked on the discovery call. Tell me about your business. What do you sell? Who's the target market? Who's your target market? Tell me about your project. What do you need help with? What results are you looking to achieve? What budget did you have in mind for this project? When do you need this project completed by? We can discuss their deadline and then after Discovery, call or email the prospect that potential client a proposal and quite for my writing services. So those questions are great, But don't always ask all of those questions. And always in that particular order, No. But as a beginner, I would have these questions up on the screen and there in the workbook so you can download and have them ready when you do your discovery, colds and I try and go through as many as possible, and I listen to the client as they talk, and I was prompting questions like the ones I'm giving you, and clients love it because you're really taking the time to find out their needs and find out if they are the right fit. And if they're not, I'll tell them at the end of the call. Hey, I don't think I'm the best person to help you, but happy to, you know, refer you to some other people, and that's always great. 14. 5 Proven Client Getting Strategies : how to get clients. This has got to be one of the most frequently asked questions I have as a freelance writer . People want to know how to yet clients, you know, maybe you're a someone considered in becoming a freelance writer, and you're wondering, how are you going to get your first client? Well, maybe you're an established freelance writer has been working for a number of years. You just looking to attract better and higher paying clients. You know, I've been on both sides of the fence. I'm a freelance writer, but I'm also someone who hires other freelance writers to join my agency. And I've done that over the years. And so I'm uniquely qualified to look at both sides of the coin as a freelance writer and someone who hires freelance writers. I know what clients are looking for Now, before you get too excited, I'm no longer hiring other writers, so please don't send me messages or emails asking for a job. It happened in the past anyway. I'm going to show you five proven strategies for getting high paying clients, regardless, if you're a new freelance writer or an experience writer. But before we get to that the first few on his truths about getting clients The 1st 1 is, if you don't have any clients, it's 100% your fault. That might sound a little harsh, but it's true by never having a slow month. I just look at my calendar and what I've been doing. And I think, have I spent any time at all on trying to drum up business and get new clients? Well, if I haven't, should I really be surprised? I don't have any clients, you know, unless you're an established writer who's built a strong following and reputation clients don't just fall out of the sky into your lap. You do need to spend time on marketing yourself and get in client. So I'm about to give you some great strategies on how to do that. But you need to keep active, especially in the beginning. In the beginning, when no one knows you and you haven't built a reputation yet, you don't have any clients. You do dio need to spend a lot of time on going out there, putting yourself out there on hustling and becoming visible in the eyes of potential clients. But you don't have to do it forever once you've built up your reputation. Once you've established yourself, you've worked with a few clients already. You will notice that word of mouth kicks in referrals kick in and you will start to get people coming to you. That's only once you've spent time building up a profile. You shouldn't expect that to happen immediately. So in the beginning do spend a lot of time on marketing on getting yourself out there. Also, don't settle for low paying clients. You know, there's a lot of people out there that will pay good money for freelance writing. You just have to find them. But you don't have to accept, you know, crappy, low paying clients you can keep going, keep market itself and get much better paying clients. So the next few videos I'm gonna have a five proven client getting strategies, and these are your network job boards, Facebook groups, cold emailing and networking. So let's jump into it with the 1st 1 on your network 15. Your Network: your network. What I mean by your network, your network is really the people that you know, the people in your circle. Now these might be friends, family members, colleagues, people you've worked with in the past. That's your network. Now it's much easier to sell something to a friend or family member than it is to a complete stranger. Why is that? That's because those people already know, like and trust us now. I'm not saying that you need to sell your writing services to your friends or family members. What I'm saying is that these people already know, like and trust you, so it's much easier for them to recommend other people that may need freelance writing services. So the first step before you do any other type of marketing is conduct your network. They're much easier to sell to, or they might know someone who needs freelance writing services. Sorry, what I want to do now is give you two ways. On These are actual templates and examples that you can implement for reaching out to your network just gently and friendly. Let them know that you are now a freelance writer or that you have freelance writing services available, so I'm gonna give you two templates. Their 1st 1 is an email template that you can copy and modify and then send to anyone in your network that might be your friends and might be a family member. It might be some old bosses or colleagues that you worked with to let them know that you're now available for hire, so that's one way you could do it. The other way is on Facebook. You could do a simple Facebook post, and, yes, have a template. Both of these templates are inside the workbook, and you can use this Facebook post template to modify it post on Facebook and who knows who respond. Maybe someone you know will need your services or someone they might know will need your services. And it's a great way to kick off your freelance writing business. Think about who in your network might need your service. Who do you know we're ready on the news? Either of these templates or both to reach out to your network 16. Job Boards: Some people say that job boards to competitive and only offer low paying jobs. Well, that's not 100% true. I have actually posted jobs before looking for other freelance writers of poster jobs that will worth thousands of dollars and have hired people from those job boards. So I know from my own experience that there are definitely high paying jobs to be found on many job boards. The problem is, not every job board is a great place for you to look for clients. Some job boards are terrible, and you shouldn't spend any time on. So what I'm gonna do is show you five different job boards give the links to all of them that you can be on to look for high paying clients. So these are the five worthwhile job boards for freelance writers, and I've given you links to all of these inside off the workbook inside the class dashboards. You can download that quick on any of these links and go there. Some are free to join and respond to job ads or job postings, and others are like content. How dot com require payment. I've been there. The five worthwhile job boards I'd recommend for freelance writers. Now what do you do in those job boards? What's your plan of attack? To get clients from those job boards, we'll have a four step process that I would recommend you follow. It's going to go over this quickly to give you an outline of what you should do to get clients from these job boards. So Step one is to look at the job boards every single day. The reason for that is some of these job boards might get hundreds of new jobs every single day, and there might be thousands of freelance writers on there. You want to be one of the first few people to respond. You want to be that kind of person if you're on there often. So a friend of mine recommends checking some of those job boards in the morning and in the evening, safe and capture. Both times I So look at the job boards every single day. When you find a job that looks interesting or something you'd like to work on you for qualified to work on. You want to read the job post in full, you know, one over look for freelance writers on these job boards after posting my own jobs. One of my biggest pet paves is the amount of writers that don't spend any time reading my job post, and they just send me some cut and paste reply, which is clearly shows they've spent no time really my job post because they send that same that same reply or application to everybody. You know, I see that very, very often, and I simply decline every single one of those people. Sorry. Make sure you read the job posting full look at who's posting the job posts and collect as much information you can about that person because that's gonna help you with next step, which is to send a postal eyes pitch and include relevant samples. My second biggest pet, pave, is after people don't really into. Since, um, a copy and pasted application is. They don't attach any relevant samples that might attach 50 samples, but none of them are relevant or similar to the kind of work I'm looking for. I mean, the kind of work that I'm I'm looking to hire people for, so make sure you attach relevant samples and make sure your personalized pitch is in there . One of the best ones that ever received was from a freelance, actually a virtual assistant I hired, and I must have gotten, like 70 applicants for the job reading through endless amounts off, you know, boilerplate pitches. None of them were personalized. And then one popped out. And the reason I popped out is because in my job ad, I said so that I know you've taken the time to actually read this job posting. I want to reply with the words Chunky Monkey Somewhere in your reply in your application. Now the best response that I found the person I hired and I hide them for almost a year was a virtual assistant. And the reason waas the first opening line to her pitch. Waas Hi, Jessi is chunky monkey, a type off ice cream in Randwick. Now the reason why that really caught my attention was because first of all, she replied, she pasta tests of using the words Chunky Monkey. But also she looked at my profile notice that I was living in Randwick at the time, and so she combined those two things to personalize the first line off her application of her pitch, and as a result, she got my attention with side of conversation, an interview, and she got the job and I made the right choice. She was an excellent candidate. To send a personalized pitch will actually give you a template. It's inside the workbook that you can use for personalizing and pitching for jobs. Now, once you've done that, if you don't get the job, that's OK. But send follow up messages. You know after you've done the pitch, you know if you can some some job boards will allow someone. But if you can start a conversation, fall up that person after a few days, maybe after a week, and see where they're at, you never know, even if they're hired another person, that person might have fallen through, and there might still be looking for other people. So persistence does pay. Follow up is the name of the game in turning, you know, interested people into actual clients. That's really my four step plan for getting clients of job boards and effectively pitching your seventh 17. Facebook Groups: Facebook groups are actually a great place to meet potential clients. Actually, there's many reasons for joining and participating in Facebook groups. Everyone is on Facebook. I mean, most of the world are on Facebook, people that have connections to the Internet. Most people have a Facebook account, including your clients. So some of the benefits of joining these Facebook groups and participating as you can showcase your writing skills. You know you can post some of you or put follow examples. You can show off your writing and get the attention of potential clients. You can also network with other freelances in some of these groups. So I'm going to recommend you join freelance writing group so that you can get advice and network and share ideas with other freelances. That's a great idea, but also joined Facebook groups where your potential clients are spending time in. So which Facebook groups should you join? Well, as I mentioned, the ones that your potential clients are members off that requires some creative thinking. But if you think about it all right, who is my what nations are my targeting? So if I met specialist writer or foreign going after a particular nation. What knish or industry is that? Let's say my chosen age is finance and investing. Okay, well, then I might think, OK, finance, investing. There might be a lot of groups out there. Maybe I'm looking for financial planners. Maybe what? I've identified those as being ideal clients value freelance writing, and it can afford my services. So now we know that financial planners are Facebook groups that we want to be involved in. So how do you find them as well? Simple way. It simply google it. Type in Facebook groups for financial planets or Facebook groups for whatever your ideal clients are or whatever your niche is, and Google will bring up a whole bunch of results. You can also go to facebook dot com, click on groups and then search for your target audience or ideal clients that way, and you'll find lots of different groups. 1/3 way to find them is to look at some of the profiles off your ideal clients. That said, their financial planners look at those profiles, and often it will say what groups they remember off already. So if you can find one financial planner for a couple of them. Look at their Facebook pages and look at what groups their members have already. That will tell you what groups you need to be in. So that's how you find groups and you want to join those groups. Now what do you do want to inside those groups? And what should you post? Well, you should post value inside of the Facebook groups. You remember off you want to be a valuable member of the group, you know the last thing you want to do. And in fact, this is against a lot of groups, rules and policies. You don't want to go in and start pitching your services. You know, often those people get blocked or removed from those groups a much better ways of going and provide value and value. It's such a good way because at getting clients, because by demonstrating value, clients come to us and then much easier to turn into clients if they're coming toe us. So I want to give you six ways of how you control value in these groups without pitching a show value. First, keep showing value, keep showing up in these groups, and then you can sell or then you'll be attracting people to you. The first way is what I call a m A or asked me anything. I'm gonna talk more about that in just a moment. I'm going to give you a case study of how it used this method to attract a very high paying clients. You can also provide free website or content critiques, which is also a part of the A m A or asked me anything strategy, but basically offering to co taken provide feedback on anyone's website. If you're a copy writer or blogger posts. If you're a content writer is great. It's a frequent take of free analysis off their writing. They love it. They get some free tips and then may become one of your clients. You could share helpful videos or block posts. So as a freelance writer in your knee, she should be looking at content that might be valuable to your potential clients. You know, maybe that's a blogger posts on how financial planets could market their businesses better or whatever it might be. But why not share those blood posts or articles or videos that you found that you feel will benefit a help your your potential clients, and by doing that, they're going to see you as a trusted adviser. Even if those videos of log posts weren't written by you there just ones you found and you've shared. That's a great strategy, even on LinkedIn. Doing that to our track. Potential clients are Facebook live videos. You could do Facebook live videos in some of these groups there suddenly hiring very good at getting engagement by posting Facebook live videos in groups you know, people quicken loans. Watch those and you could give advice on how to write. Give advice on you know how to position there. You know, there had to write a bit of value proposition anything. Any tips that you feel would benefit your clients that you can share in a Facebook live video is a great idea for impressing those people in the groups. And again. Position yourself as an expert is someone they could trust to be their free Let's write up . So let's look at this am a strategy. So this is a post I made in a group. I'm not going to say what grip it is because I don't want you know them to be inundated with people copying the strategy. But what I did was I did a AM a post and it said, Hey, speakers. I'm a professional copywriter was written for many world class speakers and events over the last 12 years. I'll be here for the next two hours to answer your questions. Got a sales page you want me to review? Post your link here, have a bio you want feedback on shared here, or send me a private message. I'll be happy to help out for the next few hours. And then I included a handsome, smiling photo of myself just to get people's attention as there was school people see images before they see text. So within two hours of posting this in a group that identified as having my ideal clients, Ian, I received 17 comments from that post within just two hours and eight private messages of people asking for May. After what my rates were asking if I could take their website or bio or things like that. One of the people that message made turned into a client. So he went from chatting on Facebook to jumping on a discovery call which have talked about in a previous video, and hey said I need a whole bunch of help and that actually turned into a $4200 project. So somebody never heard of me before, didn't know who I waas and within a couple of hours, and I said in that proposal and he became a client. So Facebook groups are a goldmine if you use them correctly. But again, notice how it posted value. First, I said, Let me help you guys and as a result that position me is an expert and help me get, you know, prospects and clients. You might say, Well, Jesse, I haven't been a writer for 12 years. I can't position myself as an expert where you don't have to work out how I did. You don't have to mention your expertise. You could say I'm a freelance writer specializing in helping, you know, Financial plan is right bed up log, posting content so they can rank on Google. All the critic anyone's blow post right now, send me links to your website, you know, whatever it might be, you can use the same strategy, so that's Facebook groups. Make sure you go ahead and think about what groups you could join and what kind of value you could provide in those groups. The idea is to be active, provide value shop consistently, and you will get the attention of potential clients who might eventually become paying clients for you. 18. Cold Emailing: called emailing, is the out of sending unsolicited email pitches to potential clients in order to pitch your writing services. Now it is not the same. A span sounds scary, right? Sounds intimidating, and a lot of people are against cold emailing. But many freelances out their friends. Writers are making great money and attracting a lot of clients by using cold emailing so it works. In fact, cold emailing must be one of the best ways, one of the fastest ways for attracting high paying clients. The reason why it's not spend is because if you're doing it on a small scale, I'd say just to a couple of 100 people, that's very different and also a lot of companies that you probably going to be pitching expect to receive emails of this nature. It's just a part of marketing of services in doing business, you know, they used to get in these kinds of emails, and if you personalize it and you make it helpful to those people with your cold email pitch, then it's not really span because it personalized so cold emailing works. Now before you begin, it's very important that you first identify who your ideal clients are. You must read this in order to make this strategy work. Because if you don't well, then you just emailing people randomly and that really is spamming. But if you're identifying who your ideal clients are, then it's much easier to stop cold emailing. So if you're not sure who your clients are, go back and watch my previous video in this course way back in the beginning, all about choosing a neesh, choosing a nation identifying your ideal clients. Now those might be financial planners that might be wedding planners, whoever they turn out being, find out and identify who they are First. Once you've done that, you can then follow this system, which I'm going toe first, give you the overview off and then break down step by step and show you how to do it. So Step one in the cold emailing system is to find a list of ideal companies to contact. Step to is find the right person contact details. Send a personalized cold email to that person K track with a spreadsheet off heave emailed , and when you've emailed and then send follow up emails. Follow up is the name of the game, you know, especially when it comes to sales or selling. That's the system in and not show. Let's move to step number one. Find a list of ideal companies to contact. How do you do that? How do you find all the wedding planners that you need? Well, there's a few websites that have these directories where you can find thousands of wedding planners or whoever you ideal clients might bay. So those websites are angel dot co mantra dot com, ford slash business and, of course, linked in so used Those websites go there. No, your ideal clients are search for them, and in those directories it should pull up, you know, dozens if not hundreds or even thousands off Cos within your nation. You know your ideal clients. The next step is OK. Now you have the company need to find the right person of contact at that company. How do you do that? Well, there's a few different ways you could look at that website off the company and look at their about page and what you're looking for. He is someone in a role who is the person to speak to who actually hires or would hire freelance writers. They're probably the director of marketing, the director of content marketing. That might be the blogged manager editor riffing doubt, If you're not sure, contact any of the marketing people or even the founder, Theo. All the business. Okay, especially in smaller companies, it's usually the business I know. So that's how you find their contact details. Now there's other ways you consent to look at in Google. You can search Google and find ways to do this. But that's how I would recommend you find the right person to contact and also their email address. Very important. Number three. Send a personalized cold email. So how do you craft the best email to send? Well, I've provided a cold email template, a winning template that you can use. You can modify and personalize and send to people that should give you a good chance of cutting through getting their attention and hopefully getting a reply idea. I forgot to mention you want to track all of the people that you're contacting. You could do that in the spread shape. Any CR and spread shaped for tracking leads is a good one to use. And make sure you do that. Make sure we full up as well 19. Networking : This is my favorite strategy for getting clients I'm talking about in person networking at events, trade shows, workshops, seminars, conferences and things of that nature. You know, when you go out into the real world and talkto riel human beings. But network is a hugely effective strategy, and there is white. So effective is because your building trust when you meet someone face to face your building, report trust and likeability by shaking someone's hand and looking them face to face. It's so much more effective because you're doing it face to face, as opposed to online communication with someone's not even sure if you're a real person. So networking in person, you know, does that it's so effective. For that reason, a building trust report. What kind of events my talking about? Well, obviously, the best kind of events are ones that have your potential clients in. You know you need to identify dyes, which I'll help you do in just a moment. But you might look at different events like trade shows, seminars and conferences, workshops, retreats, product launches and even business lunches. Whatever the event fight might be, the most important thing is, is your target market attending these events. So how do you research and find these events that there might be attending was a whole bunch of online resource is that can help you made up dot com is a great place to find events. So is eventbrite dot com Facebook events or groups you could also just post in. Some of those groups are email. Some people in that industry and say, Hey, I'm interested in attending some events is here what are some of you must attend events in your industry and find out directly from potential clients, even if they aren't your clients yet can still ask them. So how do you prepare for events? Let's say you've chosen a few events you're going to attend. How do you prepare? Well, the 1st 1 is to research the event. What is the event about who is speaking at the event? Who are the speakers and what are their topics? I do recommend meeting some of those speakers when you go to the event, and if you've done your research, will already have talking points to to use during those conversations. Find out what the dress code is very important, you know, Is it a very casual event? What should you wear? You know often that's advertised on the website, so you could look at photos of past events and see what people wearing a previous ones. I'd advise wearing business attire. Go there dressed for business on That way, you'll stand out, you know, I've done in the past and other people wearing smart, casual I was in business attire. It just was more effective for me. If it is a business event, I have business cards designed and printed. Have those ready to go and hand out to people that you might made in the event. Also a great idea. Now here's the interesting thing you can do and I read it. Case study was preparing this presentation. Were a custom T shirt that says what you do. So this one, his an example? This guy wore a teacher that said Copywriter, just a simple black T shirt with white writing that says Copywriter and he attended. I think it was a several day event you could read more about. It got the link to the source there, but he got $5000 worth of copyrighting clients from a $22 T shirt and basically he walked around the event wearing this and people approaching, said Copywriter. We need a copywriter or we're looking for a copywriter or we know someone is looking for a copywriter. Do you have a car? And people just approach him because it was advertising what he did on his shirt again. Read more about it in that blood post link provided right there. But that's something you could do that something I would certainly do. I think it's a great strategy. Some other strategies of how toe get noticed a network. One of the things that I've done very successfully, in fact, I uses to kick off my copy writing career was I went to events. I sat in the audience. I listen to this. Baker and I prepared questions that I wanted to ask, because often at the end of these presentations, I'll say, I'm going to open up the floor for questions Put up your hand if you want the mic and ask me any question. I always had a question prepared, but more than that, I made sure I introduced myself before asking the question. So who's gonna question I'd put up my hand, the mic runner would come. Give me the microphone and I'd say hi, whoever the speakers name was. Hi, John Smith. My name is Jesse Forest. I'm a website copy rider help businesses right, affected copy for their marketing materials. And my question is, And then it also question that was related to the presentation. What have I just done now? Everybody in the audience knows I'm a copywriter. They know who help on what I do. And then after their presentation, I found that I was often mobbed by people that were interested in learning more about copyrighting and whether or not we could work together. So that's just a great, very quick strategy, you know, to let the entire room of people no end the speakers know who you are and what you do. And I was very, very effective for me, so I tried it out. The next time you're in event, even if you're shy or nervous like I was, it just takes 20 seconds of courage to stand up. Introduce yourself and ask are relatable question or if you are very introverted, but you do want to go to networking events and conferences. Bring a confident friend. Tell them before the event. Hey, I really want to go on network and meet people and maybe some potential clients. Can you come with me and have them by your side and pushing you and helping you out when you're feeling awkward and motivating you to to network? I even played a game once where we had 100. I gave $100 of my own money to a friend that came with me to the event. I said, Give me back $20 every time I go and start a conversation with somebody And that way I was really motivated because I didn't want to lose $100 so you could do the same thing at events to encourage and motivate you to go on network and made other people. Now, what about meeting the speakers often the speakers of people of influence that know a lot of people and that might be about to introduce you to some potential clients or recommend you as well. So the best 100 MIT speakers is not when they're on stage, it's when there it's during the conference itself. So in the break. Speakers are often mobbed by a 10 days, so the best time to talk to them is during other speakers presentations. So Speaker is on stage and speaker Bay is probably in the lobby, in the hallway, at the cafe Downstairs on those are the best times to approach him because they usually alone. You go over, introduce yourself, tell them what you do for a living and ask them if they have any needs for freelance writers in their business. Or if they might know someone at the common to, you know, might need freelance writers. And the benefit of researching the speakers and their topics before going to the event is now You have talking points. You could go up to that speak and say, Hey, I love your presentation. Also, love your blogger. I recently read that article. You poster. I watched that video. You post something? It's great when you're doing my name. Is Jesse on a copywriter actually here to network with some potential clients? Would you know anyone who might need a freelance copywriter? Great way toe, get potential clients. So that is how we used networking. I've covered everything I know about networking truly is a great strategy. It's one that I used when I first started trying to get clients, and I picked up two clients from my first seminar so you could do the same very thing yourself. 20. Working With Clients: working with clients. So now you've got your first client or your next client, and you wanna have a smooth and enjoyable relationship with them that's beneficial for both of you. And one way they recommend you to other people and and high you again as repeat business. So I want to talk about in this video. How have that kind of good relationship that does end in repeat business or referrals? The importance of client agreements and also my step by step process of working with clients here. Four things you can do to make sure that you have a good working relationship with the client and the 1st 1 is you want to make sure you're friendly and professional communication at all times. It's great to have a chat and even have a joke with them. But keep things light hearted and professional. You know that is the best thing to be friendly and professional the same time. Don't go too far. They are your client. Easy to work with. You want to be easy to work with, you know, easy to work with them, but also easy to work with their staff, their assistance or even other contractors that might be working on your project. Like designers or Web designers. Be easy to work with and flexible, responsive and reliable with your clients, you know, responsive meaning You answer emails within 24 hours or even a few hours during the workday . Reliable meaning You always made deadlines that you don't miss a deadline. Doing that is the worst thing you can do on a project. Because unless you have a good reason and you let them know beforehand, missing deadlines is just not appropriate. So make sure you're reliable. Give regular updates throughout the project, you know, Tell them Hey, we've started. I've started writing The first draft are delivered in two weeks. Ah, few days before we deliver it, maybe say again, Hey, I'm gonna be sending you the first draft in a few days. You know, Just be give them regular updates, especially if the project is lasting a couple of weeks or a month checking with them. Tell him while you're at clients really appreciate that. Keeping them in the loop now. It's also important you have a client agreement. A client agreement is something that I have that I sign that my clients also signed before we start working together. So when I send my invoice, also send them a standard working agreement that really is there to protect both the client and myself in case anything goes wrong. They appreciate it. I appreciate it, and it kind of just mentions all of my terms of working with them. Some of the things that a good client agreement will do or mention is it outlines the project scope, and that's what you agree to do and what you won't do. So I'm writing webs like copy. I might also mention in the agreement that I don't do design or coding of the website. I'm just supplying words in a Microsoft document, for example, so mentioning the Skype is a good idea. It also protects you against any litigations or errors that might happen as a result of what you write. You wanna make it clear in the client agreement you wanna responsible for any of those things that go wrong. It's up to them to check everything before they publish it. Also covers are the agreement will cover the ownership of the copyright and that it's transferred to them upon payment. It also covers payment terms and cancellations. You know what happens if the project gets canceled Now? I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. I advise you to seek out a lawyer who works on these kind of agreements who can draft one up for you. And I recommend that you do that and have one of those professionally prepared by a lawyer . I'm not a lawyer. Is not legal advice that need to mention that as a disclaimer, you might want to seek one out to help you create a custom client agreement that you can use. You could also buy different client agreement templates online. If you Google that you should find something on do make sure you modify it for your own purpose, that so it includes your specific working terms. Now I want to talk about my process off working with clients, and this is exactly the process that I follow. When I get a new client onboard, yours might be different. You might want to modify it for your own purposes, but this is what I do. This is even before they become a client. So usually someone feels out my enquiry form and my the conduct page of my website and inquire about my services where I get an email or Facebook message. Someone expresses interest. I then us. I invite them to book in a 15 minute discovery call so I can find out more about their project on whether or not on the best person to be working on it. You use it a fantastic app called Callin DLLee. Two are as my appointment scheduling software now during the discovery call. If there are right fit and I believe I can help them, then what I do is I send them a proposal and a quite fire email. So proposal in a can be just a name. Oh, or it could be a PdF, and I let them know what the project is, how long it will take and how much it costs if they accept the proposal and then send them an invoice and the terms there are 100% upfront payment. They can always negotiate that, but I always ask for 100 sit up front payment. They can pay via bank transfer. They can now pay with a credit card via Skype. Sorry via stripe dot com and I have different ways they can pay once they pay the invoice. I didn't send them a research questionnaire in a research question. Edges awesome. All the questions I didn't need to know about their business, their target audience, their products or services, their goals So I could get all the necessary information that I need in order to write Thedc ah p or the content that I'm going to write for them. So the research question is really important. Are they answer the research questionnaire. They fill that out, they send it back to me. And then I begin right from the first drive version, usually in Google docks. Okay, so I right that let them know that I'll deliver that first draft on a particular date and always keep that deadline in mind. I didn't send a link to the first draft to my copy editor, all my proof reader or both. So always have a copy editor or a proof reader or both looking of my work, helping me improve it, checking for any errors of spelling mistakes, and that always makes my copy or content even better, right? So it's good to have professionals looking over your work. I then email the client linked to the Google document and also a video that explains how to use Google docks because a lot of clients don't know. Basically, I'm showing them how to leave comments or how to leave suggestions within that document right within that Google document. And by doing that, it's great kids, a document in one place, and I can see any comments or suggestions, and I can update the document in real time. It's just a great way. It's so much better than sending a word document fired email as an attachment. Things get messy, you lose. What version Google Docks is great for collaborating with not only my team of copy editors and proofreaders, but also with the clients themselves. So once they've requested changes, I think go about making any revisions or changes they might request. And I offered two rounds of revisions free of charge, with whatever money they paid for that project. Additional revisions are her extra, but I always like to know if that's the case. When we adopted, I send them an email in the final document, and I also in that email, I asked for a testimonial. Our offer referrals, and that's a great way. Once they're happy at the end of the project, they've got the copy or the content that thrilled with it. I've made all the changes and then it's a great time to after a testimonial or referrals. And then that's the end of the project. So that's how work with clients. And that's how insure that I follow an exact processed every time that they're aware of. I'm aware off. And that's also how use client agreements to make sure that you know I'm protected, they're protected and everything else. So that is how I work with clients for repeat business and referrals. 21.
