About This Class

This is my second class on katakana. I was the first on Skillshare to make a Japanese language class back in 2016. I was very casual about my first class. I used my laptop webcam and phone to record, and I didn't think much of it. It wasn't until later that it really picked up in popularity. I also noticed that now more Skillshare teachers starting to teach Japanese.

Many asked to explain more about how to use Katakana and how it works. In this video, I aimed to answer to questions and to quiz you on reading and recognizing foreign words written in katakana.

If you haven't already, please watch my first class. Also please study and memorize your katakana before beginning. If you haven't, you'll find this class to be challenging.

You can find the class here: https://www.skillshare.com/classes/Beginner-Japanese-Katakana/408296844

1. What is Katakana?: Hi. My name is Nico. How she I am a 10 year residents of Japan. I am Japanese American and my major. When I was studying in college, I started this, uh, gotta lesson with skill share, not the change would happen, but it I took a chance. I just wasn't really sure how My God, they're gonna listen to do. But it turns out over the course of a clears, it was very popular. People were asking ways the next class and in that time that it became very popular. I became a mom and my daughter's almost two. And so I was also very busy. Not just a mom, but I also started my own other business. I'm called BB ha threads on etc. Where I handed Breuer flowers. And that's also very time consuming because they embroidery. And I was also contemplating trying Teoh restart my tour business. Though being among that will be very difficult. I'll see how I can do it. Okay, so about me, I wanted to teach this second part of the class because a lot of people were asking on how to apply and how to make words and how it's mechanics work as well. My previous. Listen, if you haven't watched it, please watch. It tells you how to write up in order to memorize. The best way to integrate it into your brain is too right. So you're as you're writing your metaphorically or maybe literally carving the Turkana into your memory. And so when you see it and you re it, you recognize it more quickly than just using flash cards. The reason why I did only have Pecanha and not the other two road basis since the 1st 1 here and then the 2nd 1 is Hunty is because a lot of the Catholic Ana looks very similar. The there are a few Kana, which is the syllables like soon and she they very, very similar to each other and soul and also look very similar. So, um, as I mentioned in my previous video when I was learning Japanese, they don't be hearing on a first, because in Japan that's what you usually were first. As first Raider, you learned hitting on a first and then have gone up and then But as adults and not a first grader, I regretted learning a first for a few reasons. The first reason if I already mentioned the common already looked very similar to each other, and so it was easy to get confused. The second reason Waas is that there are so many words in the Japanese language today that our foreign words, but used as everyday language and have become integrated part into the Japanese language. The majority of these words are English. Every now and then you'll have a German word or French or Italian. You know, you just like English. We haven't little mix, but there's a very high concentration of English words and sometimes to the point where they prefer these words over their traditional Japanese works. And I'll get into the reasons of the kind of is used in a minute. So the first reason, like I dissention, is the use of writing foreign words. The second reason would be on a Monica, which are usually jacket on one, such as not not home home and being surprised or your heart pounding is built 50. Or I guess you know you hear, feel your heart is the sound of a kiss is Jews and center that there so many on a lot of words that are also integrated into every Japanese everyday job these life as normal. Kappler uh, emphasis would be another ones. For example, they want Teoh emphasize a certain word. So instead of writing it, you can't about or consider, you will write it in a condom, even though it's a Japanese word, Uh, the other one will be to also soften the look of a word in Japanese perception. Haji is seeing a very rigid and cold, I guess, and for some reason, though, I would be got lots more nice and soft. But they feel Khanna is more has a nice, softer tone as you're reading it. So even though it may be a Japanese word, they choose to write comic con and then, um, other one would be to shorten a word. So, for example, they'll have word like personal computer, which is PC, which is what we say. But in this just the way we don't want to say a personal computer, we say See, they say, is a posson a call home. Cuba, they will say, also call and G because a life before four syllable worse in this lesson is first, I will teach you how to recognize. I wish our which I think should be pretty easy. They're very the second would be to recognize how to read a word that is foreign that you may recognize if you're traveling to Japan. This is another reason why I think you should learn public on our first, because that will help you old indoors when you come visit you can because not everything is going to be written in English all the time, more so today than in the seventies. But there's a lot of God that is used, and if you can read the economy, you can understand when there is no English. What something might be and the other one is, is that if you are very serious about learning Japanese, please do not learn Japanese. Using philosophy or English is turned into Japanese sounds because no one is Your hand writes like that. And I think it would, you know, may feel like you're too busy. Please find the time to learn how to read. At least you got a first. But I mean, I found first in my being so that any more waiting or talking, let's get 2. How to recognize Katakana: Hello and welcome to the first part of my lesson recognizing Kata Khanna. Music is brought to you by Elijah Niang with his LP Guy Jean So this part of the lesson I would like you to take a moment and look at this poster here and please tell me which ones do you think is the If you said any of thes three you are correct. The rest are Condi and Tarragona or obviously English. Great job. Kategaya is easily recognized by its simple and angular shapes. Well, you know Ghana is more rounded and Conte is more complicated Okay, up to the next poster. You know what todo if you said any of these two you are correct. Of course there are mawr that air quite small down at the bottom but no graphics. A little bit difficult to reach. All right, Here comes the next poster Which ones here are in? Cut the Khanna He said any of these you are correct. This poster is full of Kata Khanna For many reasons it's about ballet which is foreign coming up towards the end. Here is our second to last poster you know, to dio I bet you're getting really good at this, are you? If you said any of these Yeah, you are correct. Great job. Wow. I think you're getting much better at this. Here is the last poster, guys. Which one here has gotta Khanna, go for it. Did you get it? 123 Hey! And if you got another one that is really tiny. It's right there. All right, everybody, thank you so much for watching this lesson. Uh, how did you do? Did you do? Really? Well, maybe not so great. Leave a comment and let me know how it went. That's the first part of the lesson done. You in the next listen. 3. Japanese Phonics: the way things is the book that I will be using today. Donna is his con Gede and inside. So this is meant for elementary school students to the studying their Condi and also probably how to write their short athletes. They also have, like some nice, cool facts about history of chocolate, etcetera. Before we get into reading Kappa Khanna, I'd like to get into how to recognize how Japanese perceive phonics. Phonics, if you don't know, is the way that we pronounce our words with something that we teach Teoh, kindergartners and first graders or younger when they first learned how to read so they can pick up the rules pretty easily. The difference, or the complication for Japanese Teoh pick up on foreign phonics is that the sound range for Japanese is not a complex as other languages. Candy, for the very first common example I've listed as number one, is the R and l sound, um, in Japanese. There is no such thing as our and there is no such thing as L. There's no per and there's no. So instead, they've adapted it to the closest thing that they can think of, which is Nadie do they know right here? And so when I say dot edu digital it's closer to the Latin base our sound where you slightly rule your tongue you can find this are many other European based language is Spanish, Italian, Hungarian example. So if you want to get your pronunciation really perfect and you don't know how to do this, learn how to give your ours Ah, flight roll of the tongue. Just a touch. So one more time the d do that? No. Whenever they see r or L or they hear something like that because actually, they might not be able to hear the difference between our NL. They will use these. Sometimes there's a different rule toe are I'll get back to okay for V sounds and this is all languages, for they do not have a V sound. The closest they have to that is a B sound like banana. And so the sound for this Bobby Babel, if they have a let's say they want to talk about vegetables cause sometimes to do and they use English word, they will say bit instead of okay. This a couple of times. All right. Here is M or n, and at the end of a word, they do not know the difference between the end of thes these two sounds to them. They both sound the same, so they use the closest thing they can think of, which is so that's just normal wound at the end. This is Onley used at the end of sound. It cannot start another sound. So, for example, it all men lunch would be done. T is another one for or G sound. See if it's like a C E Z eat. I, uh, kind of found They will use a jeep. So this is sheet with a tech tent and it because G and if you say Z, they'll actually not here This part. They'll hear a gym instead. It's just how the words work, however. Strangely enough, they do have a Zazu ZOLL. Zey have a Z, but for some reason, the Z Sound Z does not translate. The F sound usually will be represented by who It is not a strong F a who if you don't do that, you just do you like gentle? Don't try to blow out a candle or they might use he, which is Sometimes he like a slight f sound or sounds like we won't. Wei and Wu, they do not have a way to make thes. They can make a wa sound very easily, but for the other w sounds they cannot. So instead, they'll have a re boot eat. So this is a small, constant small Val E rule. Whoa! Or who s O, for example? John Woo Jones. Who? Uh, woman Mom. So there's no way in here, But they wouldn't. They would just use a room on and for would food dole. So it's a new sound. If you ever see this, it's most likely gonna turn into this. Okay, Another one is a s sound is ah, she sounds because they don't have Ah, um, like, for example, the word city, which is C I t. Y. This is gonna be really funny. It turns into she d and they don't mean poo. It's just for some reason, they do that. San Francisco for examples, some put on she's school. I sounds or see myself. Then it will become sheet. If it saw sue souls on say that it's ah, it's okay. But for some reason, as I is like this. Okay? Double constant sound. Or appears appearance becomes a small suit sound, for example. Broccoli, for example has to seize. So for them, it's brutal. Cody, eso that small zoo just tells you to take a beat when you finish with the small suit sound You catch your pen, so throw it broke. Woody broke 20. Okay, so that's the skip for them. Another one would be chip. Sit. So it's so for them. Even though there is no double p sound, it just makes it sound. Gets closer to the original word. Okay, Number nine is the er sound as in our you know, the ending. Er sounds not beginning. Er sounds, for example, car is usually ka. There's no for sound, so they extend it with a noble suit. I guess you could pretend that you're in Boston, so use a car or roller. Broda o are poor. And then this one is poor Teoh. Okay, so in this case is a do sound our sometimes. So when they try to teach English, they'll try to use Cut the contradict Teach English. Our is Ah ah! And then your is you. Ah, and then there is Zia. Okay, so then this brought me to this. Reminded me of the T H sound, which is pretty unique. Teoh English There two kinds of to eight th sounds pronounced and not pronounced. Three would be foodie, so they would use a soup. Or if it's a fit, say, or a saw or a no or whatever. It would mean that they would use these sauce. Basil Sue say it's also and then if it's a the I think this is the pronounced th in English . It would be a zoo, so they do the same thing. But they add a zoo. Okay, And then the last rule is number 11 which is X, which is pretty easy like that. So the word fox be hocus it on, um, extra. So that's it for recognizing the rules. Um, on how Teoh translate foreign phonics into Japanese
