About This Class

In this tutorial I will show you how to create a simple scene in Photoshop using photomanipulation techniques.

Although the scene itself is simple and is made of only a few stock images, creating the masks, illumination and shadows can be a little challenging. So in this video I will show you how to face this challenging tasks.

Requirements?

  • You will need a computer with Windows or Mac OS
  • Minimum RAM memory for smooth running: 8GB
  • Photoshop CS6 or CC (previous versions work as well with minor changes)

What will I learn in this course?

You will learn to create a manipulation from beginning to end. You will see the workflow I use and how I create advanced masks using Calculations and how to create depth of field using masks along with other manipulation tricks and techniques.

1. Tutorial Demo: how everybody Welcome to a new tutorial with PSD box. My name is Andre. And to diminish your high made this simple photo manipulation in photo shop. It's a really simple manipulation, just a real simple scene, but it does have some advance stuff on it. So I would not say it's a really difficult material, but it has some advanced stuff. I'm going to show you how I made this selections over here, especially this advanced mask over here and how to combine it with a with a copy of this, using a transition like this young later, mosque and show the new sky that we're gonna put here on the back on the background that I'm gonna show you how to make some previous edits to create sort of a darker, seen how toe more elements get shadows and at the model here and how to create the lighting using layer styles, okay. And how to paint some shadows manually. How to add more details, how to have that lamp over there and krieger the lights. And while this is how I made this and some particles, some light effects and then some adjustments using on the color look up. I'm using photo shop. And then what? How to create this final effect here amusing for Chelsea to a 2018 for this, But you can use any force shall version. But I would recommend that you use at least four shops. Yes, six, because we're going to use the color Look up and ah, you will not have it. On previous versions of full shops here, six on the resource is folder. You'll find all the stock images that you need for these and all the presets for the color . Look up because I'm going to some going to use custom presets that I created myself. And I'm gonna give you those presets so you can create this image that you see here. We're also gonna work with camera raw. I'm gonna show you how to use it even though you don't. If you don't have four shops CC, you also have the PSD file. If you want to see how I made this, if you want to see all the layers and everything and well, that's pretty much it with the intro, I hope you will enjoy it and let's get started 2. I hope you will enjoy it and let's get started. We're gonna start by creating the background like almost always, I'm gonna open. My resource is fuller and you'll seal image that images that we have here to create this manipulation. And we're going to start with this image of here. All the images that I used for this are for from unspool ash dot com and a set going to start with this one, I'm gonna all double click on it to create while to unlock it. And we're not lowered when a put it somewhere here more or less. And let's name this field and let's create a copy of it. Ah, was in this field radiant. Okay, we'll have toe lock them, select both of them, right. We can choose Linklater because when clears because we want toe, make sure that they don't move. When we're gonna create those later mosques, we have to make sure that they are right on top of each other, so we don't want not even a pixel of difference. We're gonna hide the field ingredient for now. And before creating the layer mosque that the advance later mosque, let's add the sky there on the background. So press controlled meant Oh, and I used this image you can use any other wife you on. I didn't want to create the night. I didn't want to use the night sky because I didn't want to create a such a A very dark manipulation. So I used this sky over here. Now you won't be able to see it. So if you want on the field, Grady Ent create the letter must actually have the griddle earmark mosque for both of them . But on the field, radiant, you can create use. The Grady int tool is a leaner ingredient, black to white. If you don't see it, just click here on on the Grady Int editor. Choose reset ingredients, click OK and use black White and create the Grady in from here like that. Now have to deactivate the field because it's preventing me from seeing the background. So start ingredient from here and do something like this. Don't worry, we will. We will be able to redraw this Grady int after we create a second mask. But this is just to see the sky. So now I can tell like this late which I'm gonna name Sky and I'm gonna move it around so I can see where it, uh, the mountains are because he would have to match a little bit the perspective. You don't want toe create something like this because obviously, the horizon on this field layer is here and the water line somewhere here. So we have to pretty much you have aligned more or less do your best. After recreate the second mask on the field, we will be able to move in everything around and match the angles. Okay, let's reactivate the field there and select its later mosque. Now go to channels. And here you'll find while all the channels that we have here now, we're gonna use calculations to create this letter mosque. Maybe you could even apply. Used the apply image. Maybe, but I like to use calculations for this. You can even try with the maybe with the color range or with the magic wand. But I I like to use this method, so I'm gonna show you how it works. The objective here on the channels is to select a channel that gives you most contrast between the object that you want to remove and its background In this case, I want more contrast I want us like the letter gives him more contrast between the sky and this plans over here. So the blue one is the one that I need because you can see this part here is pretty dark and the sky it's almost white. The next step is go to image and choose calculations. And this is a very simple of how this works with calculation. Basically, your you mix channels using a blend mode because he on the channels, we don't have that bland mood drop down. They will have on the layers. So we have this instead, and here we can choose on source. One who have source want serves to end the blend mode that we want to use to blend them on by default. It selects the little the child that you already have selected when you go to calculations and in this case is blue and have the option to invert that channel or involved. But invent, invert both of them. It depends on what you see better if you see better white over black or black over white and doesn't matter, and actually, sometimes you can combine different channels and just by inverting one of them on choosing different bundles. Effort is up. I don't know. Subtract You can get better results. I don't know. One just 128 skill to one. Maybe you like it better. So you just a matter of thing is this can be a little advanced and you can get some reading Nice results. But we're gonna keep it simple. And we're just gonna mix the blue with itself using the multiply blended And let's uncheck that So basically said this to blue blue and multiply and opacity 100% and click OK, now we can use levels to make the sky completely white. So Kreskin Trochmann L with this new Alfa one when you quick OK on the calculations is going to create a new channel and it's gonna name it Alfa one. Select that press controlled man out. Open the levels and move this here. This will make the sky completely white. We need that because we're going to use a painting technique and we need the sky to be completely white. Midterms were dragged this to about here on this one here and the blacks to about there. I don't care about this stripe off gray here. I don't care about that. I just I'm just looking at the edges here. Maybe the midterms, Not that dark click, OK? And this is our selection so far, this one going be this will be our layer mask. Okay, let's fill this part over here with White so it doesn't bother us. So with the offer one selected is the Marquis Ito. Select the rectangular market of selecting that part over there and press all time backspace and feel that were white. Make sure the foreground color said white, and we're done. Now. The next thing we want to do is make sure that everything here on the bottom is completely black. So we're gonna use the last so too. And select these four groups, not this one. Eso to make sure those like parts with the sky. So just paint underneath that and make the selection like that and we're gonna put the foreground color to black and old backspace to fill that with black. Now, the next step is to paint this part of a here. Ideally, we want to get silhouettes here because this grace here, since this will be our later mosque. This part here, which is great, is gonna be semi transparent. And we don't want that we wanted to be completely black down. Fainting with them with the brush like this is gonna be a pain in D s. So in order to pain without caring too much about this, we could repeat the step. Using calculations could go image calculations and blend Alfa one with Alfa wanna with the Blue Channel. If you want using, I don't know, maybe the over Leo, I don't know, or even Alfa one with self using the multiplied land mode and this will darken things even more. But still, you have to paint. And the trick here is to change the blend mode on the brush, change it to overly and pain with black. Now, if you did it right and you paint with this overlay brush with black over the white, it should not happen. What? Nothing should happen because painting with overly on wide nothing happens. So But if you pray. But if you put on this parts which are gray, it's going to darken them on by convert them into black versions off well, off this. Okay, so basically you're painting over the this part of here and convert them into silhouettes, which is what we need. The edges are not gonna be perfect, but we're gonna deal with that later. Just for now, just being like this. Okay? And we have our selection like this. Now, how do we bring this offer one into this layer mask? Now it's simple. It's very easy. Simply control. Click this thumbnail. This will create the selection. Select RGB Goto layers selected earlier mosque and press all and backspace. Make sure the foreground color set to black and feel that selection with black and it's gone. Okay. And this is what the filled radiant does. Okay. And that's why we need these layers to be perfectly aligned. And this is just for the transition. I don't wanna have something like this even though it doesn't look bad, but I don't know. I like it better, Teoh, with this transition over there, if you don't like it or if it is not looking good, just redraw the radiant and create a different. If you don't see the mountains, just do something like that and that's it. But the colors here are different. So I wanna have Ah, ingredient like this More less. Let's see the edges. You can see they're not perfect. So we have to work on the little mosque off the field. Lear selected right click and choose Select and mask or refined edge or something like that . They change the name on new versions of food shop and basically, what you do here, Just shift the edge a little. And it was a fatter This will add a little glow while is gonna soft India just basically and that's it. Just shift the ad. Don't increase the contrast too much because we don't want that on click. OK, now I think it looks a lot better than this. Okay, check the edges here and check them now they look a lot better. Now have the new background. Let's add our model. Their breast control man. Oh, opened the image of the girl. Also from on splash dot com, image by Joe will evolve it. I see here, I'm gonna extract her from the BRAC background using the quick selection tool. I'm going fast forward here, actually. Just get the quick select like this. I think I use the pan Tal on the original cause I wanted to have perfect edges, but with a quick search until you can do a pretty good job. So just make your selection like this. In some areas, of course, you have to pay more attention and maybe use other other tools. But I'm gonna go quick here for this tutorial because this is not a selection, sartorial. And it's something like this. We can even go into the quick mess mode. I almost never use this. And here basically paint with white and black everything that is gonna paint with white. Make sure you change the blend mode of the brush back to normal because it's not gonna work otherwise. And just being upset with white gonna increase the hardness of the brush and everything that is red will be will not be selected. No, it's carefully select that part. And but this here and now they have been with whites. I have to uncheck. Well, transfer here because I'm using the graphics tablet. My pen. Ah, like that. Okay, I'm gonna live it like this and create the later mosque on. That's it. You can take your time and create better edges. I'm gonna right click and choose. Apply later Mosque and I'm gonna cut her. Andi, control a control X and control W and based her here with control V. That's in this model. Now I'm gonna leave her on the original size. I'm not going to change her size. And the only thing I'm gonna do now is see where I place her. If you put it down here, she's gonna look very small compared to the plans here around her. So I'm gonna place her right here, more or less the The hand should be at the same level as a top of the plan to hear the plantation here. Okay, I'm literally for right there. And now I'm going to start making some shadows. Well, actually, before making some adjustments student model, that's combined everything on the background. If you If it looks right to you. So, like the top layer, hide them, model there and press shift. All command e to stamp everything onto a new layer because I want to use the camera Raw filter on this dark in this and criticism of a dark tone. Almost the night effect. I'm gonna use camera raw for that If you don't have photo shop CC, you will not see the camera. Raw fielder. So what you have to do is go to file, save as and here, choose Tiff, reformat on Chek offer channels and leaders and just leave copy and embed color profile, save it and then opened that tiff file with info shop and it's gonna go to camera raw, straight up, straight into camera raw it should. It should do that now, Once you're in camera raw, you can make all your edits here. What I did is I used while I saved the presets. So just go to loads headings and use the filled at it. That ex MP, this will load all the settings I while the changes that I made here on the this on camera raw fielder and this is what it does. Okay, I also use the ingredient radial filter like this. Just start from somewhere here and and to about here. This space in between the two lines is the transition. I don't know how you activate the mask here and and camera raw, but in light from, I think is the oking. But anyway, so with his with his Grady int Um, this artist settings that I made. I made sky a little colder, and I just dropped a little. Do blacks just dark and top part makes You don't affect the plants too much. Okay, that's why I could do this soft transition and click. OK, OK, and this is the before and after now I reactivate the model there, and let's create some shadows. Let's get the newly underneath her, I think his ground shadow and with the brush. Let's start painting unassuming at 100% control. One. The reset my colors. You're a soft brush and a pass it e 30 and flow or opacity 40 and flow 30. You can use change, a passage of the brush or any other tool that you're using that has a passage and flew using the numbers on your keyboard. Let's activate the transfer and just being strong, shadow under right under her dress and then, with a bigger brush, just create some soft shadows around on the ground there, over there, like so and some of them some of those shadows right here on around, but not too visible. You don't create something really dark, don't want to create something like that. It's too much, just gentle. Few passes and that's it. You can see how it looks like before and after. Now on the model, we also have to make some shadows on the dress itself, and I fainted. Some of them and some of them I'm a I credit him using them layer styles, so let's struggle their styles first, double click on the model there at some inner shadow first and looks like the settings are right here. I use soft light black capacity at 75% and the angle to 90 degrees and the distance to 90 pixels and size 81%. And this is what it does you can see around her just at some shadow. If you if you use the multiply, is gonna look weird, even if even even if you drop the opacity, I think it's gonna look weird. So that's why you saw flight and just use ah, capacity level that's right and just add some shadows around her. Then I also used in great and overly, and I used black to white, so just black and white angle 90 degrees. Basically, we want to dark in the bottom and gradually go to transparent that Because we are multiplied, the white will become transparent or you can even use foreground to transparent. Make sure you have black transparent and that's it. And you're good to go. Um, I said the angle to minus 90 degrees and the skill to 83%. And then you can click on the image and move this up and down on gets Just do something like they darkened it. Bottom part. And that's it. Okay, now let's screw the shadows manually. Some of the shadows here. I'm gonna get the new later. Clip it because one a clipping mask and I'm gonna name this body shows and with the same brush with a passivity 40 and 30 with the soft brush. Just start painting some shadows around. It's too strong. Opacity 30 and flow 10 and just dark in some parts of her body where you should wait to see shadows Just don't condemn a little believe more in that, especially here on the bottom. But okay. Do you have the before and after shattered that I painting manually as we're gonna add that lantern or lamp or actually So you have a three d object here as well. You can. If you open this in photo shop and have support three D on your Photoshopped version, you can spend this around and render it again. But you also have some rendered versions of the here created by myself. It's the great all of this. And I used this one. Okay, Just gonna press the wiki and move it right over here. Let go, and we're good to go. Now you'll see. If you press control Manti, you'll see that the box is wider than the actual Lamine. That's because they have some really faint shadows over there which were created when I rendered the object. Okay. Now have to make this a little smaller. Yeah, a little bigger. About 50% of the original size. Maybe a little just touch smaller and we have to get a little mass. Listen, this lamp, it's an oil lamp with the leader mosque and with the brush, uh, best well hardness to above 75% capacity and flew 100% and paint. All right, this Okay. And how have the Grissom shadow there with the new litter clip? It we have to greet the shadow of her hand with soft brush. Okay, Okay. Like that. Okay. And next, we also have to greet the show that this lamb cast over her body. But we're gonna do that after, would create the lights. Or let's make a new later on, we'll name it light. One said it on screen, Get the brush to, and we're gonna use the dark orange like there is more less. It's not necessary to have a precise color code for this. And with mouse, I'm gonna click with the big brush like this. Click wants there to greet the glow of light. They were gonna quit the much brighter light and a little more saturated. But this time with a much smaller brush like this and then something even brighter and less saturated in the middle with a small brush. And this is the light I created. And now we have to get a new light. That's name it light to. And I created this on a new letter because I use a different blend lid. I used the color dodge blend mode, and for this, we're gonna use a dark tone of light like this and with a soft brush we're gonna pay. This is gonna be too strong. Okay, so I'm gonna diss saturate this and use a darker tone. Its recent despondent mode is really sensitive. And I'm just gonna paint the light here on this plans and a little on her dress like that and little on her arm while on her hand right over there. And maybe some of that light here, right next to her. Okay, that light and actually here with the low capacity brush, I'm going to leave the light from her dress. Okay? And that's the light to on color Dodge. Um, now we can We can create the shadow that the lamp casts eso gonna use them. The body shadows that I created for the model that shadow that I painted. I'm going to use the same layer with the brush tool. I'm gonna use a dark orange like this and just pain with this with this soft brush capacity 50 and flow 20. I also have the pen pressure on. So just create this soft shadow like that just on the pope's nose. Nice. Just pee on the bottom. Okay? That's how it looks. like. Okay, now we're good to go. Let's let's add some particles flying around. Press controlled man. Oh, and here you'll find his dust particles. I photographed this myself with flower just banking the mast. This was my old logo. So it has really old the stock photo. But you can see I I photographed some flour with the flash. And in this case, this is out of focus. But that's OK. I wanted that effect. Gonna crop this and put it on top of everything pasted there and change the buy more to screen. Now, um, I'm gonna make it just a little smaller with control. T load the free transfer and make it smaller and you can see doesn't There's barely visible . This particles are barely visible, so have to make them more visible. And we can do that with levels, press control, command L with this layer selected and used the highlights. And just move that towards the left until you start to see the particles. Okay. See that? Something like that. Okay, now there are too many of them, and I don't want them to be visible all all over, so I'm gonna create an inverted later mosque with all clicking and click on the little mosque. Let's name these particles. And now I'm gonna paint with white. We're I want to see them around this lamp. So with the brush brush and paint with white on this, do something like that. Okay, I have the particles there. Also, we have Teoh. Well, we don't have to do it if you don't want to, but I wanted to give them a yellow color. And for that you can select the thumbnail of it press controlled menu Choose colorized. Said this to about there on increase the saturation and that's it, Frankly, Okay. Okay. Here on the hair. What I did is I I used, uh, acquitted of hair manually. I just created the new layer underneath the model named it hair and with one pixel brush hardness 100%. Just simple. Some here and just being like that, some hair soups was too bad, unless activate. Yeah, I have to transfer on simply. Just draw a few lines there on some flying here. That's it. We'll activate ship dynamics as well is going to give you more precision. I can create more fine hairs here okay. And here is well, the sample and paint create few lines sticking out from the from behind. Okay, like that on, we'll get to go. You can see how it looks before and after just a little a few lines over there, and that's it. You hear a swell? Okay, next, let's start making some adjustments to this. We're going to start with the color, look up. So, like, the top layer and add a color look up. And here I'm gonna start adding the presets that I made. And by the way, I changed the format of them 22 dot cube because some some of you reported that when you use this on a newer versions of photo shop for a shop crashed. So I changed the formats and re upload it. So if you downloaded the port, it awesome loops back. Just w again the process that I'm gonna use for this particular tutorial gonna find them on the resource is folder and all you need to do just go to load three the lot and locate the files. The file names on the resource is folder. The 1st 1 is the P A 26 So locate this file and you can see the fact that it creates. I created this presets and I always use them on normal land. Modi only change the opacity and combined them combined each other. And that that's how I get the effects on my manipulations. So this one, I put it and at 40%. And I just wanted this for the background because you can see darkens the background a little. So I didn't want to darken and change the color off the model. So what I did is I used the selection of the girl. So control click thumbnail Tito, select her and go to the little Moscow. This color Look up and fill that with black. And this will avoid showing the effect over the girl. Okay, if you want to see some of it, but not all of it. Just use the density and drop it to about may. I don't know me 75 or 80% on that way. You 20% of the effect is visible over the girl on Lee. Next, another color look up. And this time I used the p A 19 so again go to load three lot. And inside the resource is folder Fuller located P a 19. And this time I left did at 57% capacity and then last but not least, a ingredient map. And I used one of the photographic toning presets. So just go here. And she was photographic toning okay on. And I used Let's see CPS selenium to this one. And I said the capacity to 17% and I changed the blend mode to Hugh has everything. 20 actually. It's gonna give some warmth to the image and change changes the color of the sky, as you can see over there and here on the shadows a little. Next, I combined everything on when you live with shift all command e or shift all control E, This will stamp everything onto a new later, and I use the camera Raw filter. Now, if you don't have four shops, you see, you have to repeat the process, save this retouched image in tiff format and then opening back in food shop and it should open it here in camera raw and again, I'm gonna give you the presets on the precept that I use Just called final edit And when you loaded this is the effect that it does. Looks like it removes everything that we've done. And it has this colder tone on image, which is true. So if you don't like it, just we'll tweak this your own way using most of the effect of the effect was achieved here inside a calibration. So you can retouch this and also here on the H s l I made some changes, especially eliminates Onda. When you're done, click OK, And if you want to see some of the original If you like this color tones simply drop capacity and create a mix of two. Both of them. Oh, I forgot to add the moon over there. Let's do it because I'm sorry. I forgot to add the moon There. You can see the stock photo is here. Open it and based it right over here. Actually, you should based it here on top of the image where when we apply the camera raw for the first time. But I forgot to do it. Sorry about that, James Obama. To screen not the light and watching the story lighten as well. Let's make it smaller. Yeah, like that he's not looking good. You screen instead and we have the moon over there. Okay? And this is our manipulation. As you can see, it's really simple. Just a bill standing here with the Lamping, her hand. But we have had to create all this lighting the shadows and the selections around here. So I hope you was something nice and it was useful for you. One other thing that I forgot to do, which is really important, is to create the letter mosque here and showed this part here. And you can do this on the let me show you here cause I forgot to do as well. Um, sure, this is this and the layer of the girls.
