There are many home health remedies available to us that are simple to make or take at home that can truly build vitality or even lessen the severity of an illness. Many of these are recipes passed down from our grandmothers and have been used for hundreds of years. Even though many of these health remedies are folk medicine, their effectiveness has been backed up by science.

In this course you will learn remedies essential for health and to have on hand for several common situations including nausea, cough, sore throat, burns, infections, digestive issues, insomnia, fever, bites/stings, rashes, bruises and joint issues just to name a few. 1. Introduction: in this course will be covering the natural remedies essential to have on hand around the house and your travel kit. My name is Elizabeth. Heck, am an herbalist with over 20 years of experience working with healing botanicals and the founder and president of an herbal products company. And I teach at herbal events and conferences around the country. When I look back on my years of experience, I noticed which remedies I use most often in which are most effective. This course is a culmination of those years of experience. This is valuable information that we should all know. Just think of the times when you wish that you could have had the right remedy, too. Lessen the severity of the wound or lessen the duration of an illness, or even have maybe prevented you from having to go into a clinic. While my online courses include dozens and dozens of recipes, I have highlighted some of my favorites for you in this free course. I'll show you some of the herbal first date items I always have on hand, such as various teas and essential oils. Also share with you a few kitchen ingredients I could never be without in my favorite ways to prepare them for food as medicine. Together we'll make two of my favorite wintertime recipes for colds and flu. And for those of you venturing into the realm of herbal medicine, I'll show you my favorite delicious herbal paste recipe for energy and vitality. Being prepared is essential, so join me in this empowering and informative course. 2. Which Teas are the Most Essential: I always like to have plenty of different kinds of tea in my first aid kit. They taste great. They're really compact and easy to take with you when I definitely always put them in my travel for ST Kitts, one of my favorite that always goes with me is meant it could be spearmint or peppermint. It tastes so good. I actually do drink this almost every day, but it is good for times of nausea or if there's digestive upset. One of my favorite uses for minty is that it's very energizing, and it helps with clear thinking. So it's an interesting combination that it's that energizing. Plus, it's also calming. So really nice remedy to carry with you or keep right in your kit. Next to that I have here is cama meal, So camel is also really calming, and it's a nice tea to drink before bed. It can help with insomnia. It's just a really mild sedative, also really good for stomach pain. It's an anti spasmodic for digestive issues, so it's one of the famous remedies for colic, very safe for Children, Excellent for Children's college. I've used it also for eye strain or really sore red irritated eyes simply moist in a bag of camel. And just place it right over the eye and just sit there and relax for about 15 minutes or so. Nice excuse to just sit in and relax. I also always carry some smooth move. This is for constipation. It's Ah company called traditional Medicinal Z. I'm not an affiliate, but my dear teacher, friend and mentor, Rosemary, Glad Star was the founder of this company, and she's no longer with the company. But they still use her old recipes, which are very effective. She always said that she was going to be remembered by her smooth move. One. A cup of smooth move should do the trick. Wait about four hours, and if you need to, you can do a 2nd 1 That's really good for travel, especially after your plane travel. A few other teas that I have here these air also traditional medicinal and these air, both for colts. One is breathe easy, so nice for respiratory issues, and the other is throat coat. I really like this one for sore throat. Very soothe A has that slippery elm and licorice in it, and so It's excellent for the red raw, irritated throat, and it tastes really good. The final T that is in my first aid kit is an elder flower, yarrow flower and peppermint tea, and this is one that I've made up myself. I can either order these herbs online through the resource is that I've provided, or you can just simply purchase them at the actually probably at your co up, but also at an herb store. Let's take a look at this tea in the next lesson, and they will learn how to make a T. 3. Details of Making a Medicinal Tea: we're going to make an elder flower yarrow flower and peppermint tea. I have this in loosely formed, so I'm going to show you how to make it in a pan. This is a wonderful T wanna have on hand for cases of fever. It's what we call a dia forensic, so it helps increase the perspiration to help the body cool down. This is the most effective formula that I've ever seen. I'm going to be making a fairly strong team if I have two cups of water that I've heated on the stove and then I've removed it from the stove. You always want to do that. When working with herbs, you don't want to boil them. You'll be boiling away the valuable medicine. So I have two tablespoons of elder flour, two tablespoons of yellow flower and two tablespoons of peppermint going to go ahead and put that right into the hot water and be sure to cover that up. Both the yarrow flower and the peppermint have a lot of volatile oils in them, so they convey prize an escape, and that's good medicine. So you want to keep that, cover it up and keep those volatile oils in there. I'm going to let that steep for about 10 minutes, and when it's ready, simply just strain it right into my cup and then sip about 1/4 cup every half hour. I know it sounds like a lot, but during a fever you want to get a lot of fluids. It's really important. If I'm just making bagged tea, I will put that directly into my cup. And then while it's steeping, I want to make sure again because this is meant and some of these other herbs will do the same thing. They will vaporize. So I have happen to have a little cover here, but you could just as easily put a plate to right over the top and let that steep until you're ready to sip. 4. Which Essential Oils to Include in the First Aid Kit: I don't often use a lot of essential oils there really concentrated and really quite strong and ecologically, it takes an enormous amount of plant material just to make a small bottle of essential oil . But there are three that I find valuable enough that I do incorporate into my first aid kit . The 1st 1 is pine, which is really highly decongest ing, one of the best decongestants. Also eucalyptus essential oil. You could use either one. My favorite way to use either of these essential oils is a deacon. Jesting steam to do a steam, you simply take a bowl, fill it with really hot water and add four drops of the essential oil and then simply put your head over the bowl, covering your head and the bull, both with a towel. And if it gets too hot, you can open up the tell a little bit. Or move your head up away from the bowl a little bit and steam like that for about 10 minutes. And for any kind of congestive condition, I would do that two or three times a day. Another essential oil I like for all different kinds of topical purposes is tea tree so you can use it for insect bites and stings. Animal bites. Scratches would be careful of those cat scratches. You can use it for poison ivy. Very excellent for that, even rashes burns. It's anti fungal, so you could use it for athletes. Foot One of the nice things about tea tree is that you can use it in neat, which means you can put it directly on the skin. With a lot of essential oils, you actually have to put them into a carrier oil. So a carrier oil would be like olive oil or almond oil or something like that, too. Help reduce some of the strength of that essential oil. So a lot of people also used tea tree for acne. I would be a little careful about using the tea tree neat on the on the face for acne, but it can be very effective remedy. And finally, lavender is one of my favorites. It's so versatile, and you can use it for so many things. Topically for the skin. Really wonderful. It's antiseptic and tan. Inflammatory helps reduce the risk of infection and can actually stimulate skin regeneration. I actually put this into a lot of my facial skin care products for all those reasons. Really lovely, essential oil. And it smells really nice to you can even put it on blisters whether or not the skin is broken or not. Um, even insects, spider bites, burns bruising. You can even use lavender essential oil for jellyfish stings and scorpion stinks. So if you're gonna be in an area where either of those exist really good to bring some lavender essential oil along one of my favorite ways to use lavender essential oil is in a spritzer. So in the next lesson, we're going to learn how to make a spritzer and what it's used for. 5. Make a Lavender Spray: lavender spritzers air really easy to make and really easy to use, and they smell so amazing. They're very calming, and I would use them in cases of anxiety or headache. Just a little spritz toe, pick you up and make you feel better. It's also really good for heat stroke. Very refreshing. My favorite use for the lavender spritzer is in a room where someone has the flu, so it helps cleanse the air and clean out the room. I even bring lavender spritzer with me along on airplane rides. So, for example, if the person next to me is coughing away and I feel like I don't want to catch their cold , I might just do a little spritz to make the lavender spritzer. I have three ingredients in here. I've already combined 1/4 cup of liquid, which is half vodka and half water. The reason and putting the vodka in is as a preservative, so the vodka was 80 proof, which means it's 40% alcohol. And since I cut that in half with water means it's 20% alcohol, which is what you need to preserve any kind of liquid. So I'm going to put that into my bottle and then I'm going to add the essential oil. I'm only going to put four drops of the lavender essential oil in there. It's really quite concentrated and it comes out really fast. So you just want to tap tap, tap, tap. All right, Perfect. There's four drops and then simply shake that up really well. And every time I use it, I want to shake it because the oil will rise above the water and you don't want to. Once you get down to the bottom, have a real heavy concentration of essential oils to just shake it up really good. And sprints, that's really nice. 6. Garlic, the Best Remedy to have on Hand: If you have only one herb or spice in your kitchen for medicine, garlic would be it. It's one of the greatest healing medicinal plants that we have. Most of us don't think of it that way because it tastes so delicious, but it really, really has wonderful medicinal qualities. In fact, the National Institute of Health has over 3200 studies showing the medicinal value of garlic it confused for both acute situations and form or long term chronic illnesses. The list is actually really pretty long. It's good to have fresh on hand, especially if you're traveling. It's surprising that even in remote locations, you can always seem to find garlic, and it is definitely saved me more than once from all different kinds of ailments that I wasn't able to resolve with anything else. But garlic was always seemed to do the trick, so it can also last for quite a while, even without refrigeration, so that makes it really good for travel to, so it's good to use it fresh. It's always best to use it fresh, but you might want to eat some personally or fennel seed afterwards to help with the garlic breath What's happening with the fresh garlic is that when you chop it, the compound that we're looking for in it combines with an enzyme to create Alison. And that's where the valuable medicine is. So you want to chop it and then let it sit for about 10 minutes and then go ahead and just eat it, and it can be a bit harsh for some. Some people can Telerate it really nicely if it does cause discomfort than it's really good to make pickled garlic. You can find it in the grocery stores more often, but sometimes it's not always there. So it's really good to make it yourself toe, have it on hand, and it also tastes better. It's really, really delicious, and it's simple to make, but you do have to plan ahead a little bit. I'm preparing some right now that will go through in the third part of the garlic lessons, but for right now, let's go through some of the uses of garlic 7. Many Uses of Garlic: so I've talked about some of the general virtues of girl like I know I would like to go into some of the specifics. Garlic is absolutely my first go to for colds and flu for a lot of different reasons. First of all, it helps stimulate the immune system, and it also is improves circulation. So it's very warming to the body during cold situations such as a cold and flu. It's also really good for the respiratory system. It's an expectorant, which means that it helps you cough up and expel that flem and get it back out of the lungs . It's also anti Mount microbial, which is a term that kind of all encompassing means that it's anti viral and anti bacterial . And it's, ah, broad spectrum anti bacterial. In fact, it has even been shown to be effective against antibiotic strain resistant strains of bacteria. So that's pretty impressive. I've even used it on staph infections internally and externally. It iss antiseptic, so you can just cut one of the cloves and actually apply it rate to an afflicted area on the skin. And you can even do that for athletes foot. Because garlic is also anti fungal um for longer term use. Garlic has profound effects on MAWR chronic diseases, so it's highly antioxidant, highly anti inflammatory. So it's wonderful for the cardiovascular system can help lower blood pressure. Help lower cholesterol, slightly blood thinning. So it's a bit helpful for those who are prone to clots and stroke. It also lowers blood sugar levels for those with type two diabetes. And so, with all of these antioxidant and anti inflammatory and immune boosting benefits of garlic , it just makes it a natural against warding off cancers. So this is a very, very powerful medicine, definitely something you always want to have on hand. So I convinced you to make some pickled gerlich yet. 8. Making Pickled Garlic: So we're going to make some pickled garlic is really simple. Only takes three ingredients and a little bit of patients, So I have just finished peeling all of my garlic. You want to make sure to try to not nick it, or it will turn a little dark. It won't harm it in any way, but it just won't look as aesthetic. So you're going to take your gerlich and put it into a juror with a tight fitting lid and then fill that up. With tamari, you can use vinegar. I happen to like the flavor of tamari better and make sure you cover all of the garlic. It. We're going to cap this tightly and let it sit in a dark place for six weeks. That's where the patient's comes in. Once it is, uh, extracted into the tamari for six weeks to go ahead and strain off the liquid and reserve the liquid. You're going to keep half of that liquid and mix it with an equal amount of honey, and then put that back over the gerlich and let it sit for another six weeks. So this is really a remedy that you have to plan ahead for This is mid October right now, and I'm already making my pickled garlic for cold and flu season. It is absolutely delicious. And after that 2nd 6 weeks, you don't have to strain it again. You can actually just let it sit in that liquid, and the liquid is actually really delicious. So there you have it. There is your pickled garlic. 9. Ginger for Joint Health, Nausea, Colds and PMS: ginger is a wonderful medicinal herb, whether using it externally or internally topically, it's used as an anti inflammatory for joint pain and arthritis. It can actually even help repair joint damage and damage to cartilage tissues. Like I just boil a cup of water, I would put in about 1/2 inch of the rhizome. You don't have to peel it, just slice it and put it in the water and boil it for about 10 minutes. And once it is cool to touch, put a cloth into the liquid and place it on the affected area and cover it with a heating pad. And I would leave that on for about 20 minutes. Do that about three times a day, or, as time allows, and over time you will find that it's really effective for that purpose Internally. It also helps the joints by helping to eliminate toxins that have built up in the joints due to poor digestion. So it's really good for a digestion in general and excellent for nausea, one of the best herbs for nausea, regardless of what kind, whether it's morning sickness or motion sickness or vertigo, or even for those that are undergoing chemotherapy or coming off of anesthesia or even for food poisoning. It's just really great for for all of those, in addition to that, it is my second to only two garlic for colds and flu. It's excellent in all different kinds of ways, so it's very d congesting for the lungs. Um, also, it's very warming, very good for sore throat. Excellent remedy for that and really good for, um, poor circulation, its antibacterial and antiviral. And it also helps circulation to the pelvic area. So for those that are experiencing menstrual cramps or PMS, really good to make a nice, soothing warming ginger tea for that. So whether it's joint health or nausea or PMS or colds and flu, ginger is just really good. Teoh use fresh. Also, you could make the tea, but you can also just nibble on it, too. It's a little hot, but not as bad as garlic, and it's actually really quite delicious. You can purchase it pickled. It comes in jars at the grocery store, and there's also ginger candy, which is really delicious. And yes, even though it's candy, it does still have medicinal value to it. 10. How to Make Chai Tea: we're finally going to make that shy that we've been talking about. This is such a wonderful T not only because it tastes so good, but just about everything in here is excellent. Excellent medicine. Ah, lot of the spices that we're going to be putting into the chai have a lot in common. They all are great for colds and flu and boost the immune system. They all are wonderful for anti inflammatory conditions. They uplift the spirit and also help aid digestion. So here's what we're going to put in it. I have one cup of water here on the stove. I'm going to add two thin slices of fresh ginger. You don't have to peel it. You can just go ahead and put those right in. I have to cardamom pods, 1/2 a stick of cinnamon, three little black peppercorns and two cloves. And I'm going to cover this and let this simmer for about 10 minutes. And when that is done, I'm going to go ahead, take it off the stove and strain it right into my cup. And once I've done that, then I could go ahead and add my tea bag. So I'm going to be putting some green tea into the chai, which has wonderful medicinal qualities all of its own. It has a lot of Pelly finals in it, so it's anti inflammatory, like a lot of the other spices that we've included also really antioxidant and anti cancer , and really, also is good for mental alertness because of the caffeine. So this really enhances the drink quite a bit. Then you can sweeten it with a little honey which has a lot of medicinal qualities all on its own. Sweeten it to taste over much you like, and some people even like to add a little bit of frothy milk on the top of it. I tend to not do that, but a lot of people doing traditionally in India, that is how the chai is, is consumed. So just imagine for a moment if you replaced one cup of coffee every day with a cup of the chai, the health changes could be absolutely dramatic. So I encourage you to to try some of this guy 11. How to Make Fire Cider: If you're prone to colds with a lot of congestion, you're definitely going to want to keep some fire cider on hand this season. But your cider lives up to its name. It has a kick in terms of its flavor and its medicinal value, very warming to the system and extremely decongest ing. In fact, it will clear your Sinuses better than any other remedy. Very simple to make. I have ah jar here with a tight fitting lid and just a few simple ingredients. First of all, I have horseradish sliced up real thin and just preparing that will clear your Sinuses. I didn't bother to peel. It just went ahead and sliced it. So I'm going to put that into my jar. And next I'm going to add ginger. And that was 1/4 cup of the horseradish. This is 1/4 cup of the ginger also did not peel this, and it's also sliced really thin. So put the ginger root directly into the jar, and next I have peeled garlic. This is an entire head of garlic. I've peeled it, chopped it, and garlic is one of my favorite wintertime remedies. I put it in just about everything. And finally, I have chopped onion. This is one whole onion chopped up, and this is all just making my eyes water already. So once I have my onion in my jar, I am going to also include just a little bit of cayenne. You can add as much cayenne or as little as you like according to your taste. I'm going to put about an eighth of a teaspoon in. It's pretty strong and then simply cover it up with some apple cider vinegar. And I want to cover it until it's about an inch or two over all of the other ingredients that I've put in and that should just about do it. Then I'm simply going to cap it and let it sit for 4 to 6 weeks. Put it in a nice, cool, dry place. It doesn't necessarily have to be refrigerated, and I do tend to put a date on it so that I remember when I need to go back and strain it. And then once it's ready, just simply strain out the ingredients, reserving the vinegar. That's the medicinal part and add honey. You can add as much or as little honey as you like. Some people like a sweeter vinegar so they might add maybe 1/4 cup of honey. Some people like more of, Ah, vinegar flavor and would add a little less. It's completely up to you at the first sign of a cold. You want to take a teaspoon each hour. You could just directly take the teaspoon, and you want to do that for the first couple of days. But make sure you do it right at the onset of an illness. As a preventative, you've been around others set or sick and want to keep from getting sick yourself. Go ahead and take a teaspoon a day. You can even make it into a salad dressing, which is really delicious. Just take one part of the vinegar to three parts olive oil. Shake it up or whisk it up and put that right on your salad. So very delicious remedy and enjoy your fire center 12. Make a Tasty and Warming Ginger Tea: the ginger honey syrup is similar to the ginger tea that we make. In another lesson during this course, this has the advantage of that. You could make it either once you haven't illness, or you could make it ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for a couple of months . This is a remedy that I learned from my dear teacher and friend and mentor Rosemary. Glad Star, one of the most effective remedies that you can have on hand for colds and flu. Although garlic is my favorite remedy, ginger is a really close second. It's nice and warming, and both the ginger and the honey are not only de congesting, but they're both antiviral and antibacterial. So not only do they help boost the circulation, but they're also really wonderful for cough and sore throat To make it. I simply sliced up about, oh, about a three inch long part of the rhizome of Ginger, and I didn't peel it first, but I didn't sliced it real thin, and I'm going to lay that along the bottom of a pan here, so it's nice and evenly laid out, and then I'm going to cover that with the honey just enough to barely covered the ginger slices. Once my honey is added, then simply cover the pan and warm this on the lowest possible heat for about 20 or 30 minutes. And then once it's cooled, you can go ahead and store that you can strain the ginger out beforehand. But the ginger actually tastes really delicious, and I like just to leave it right in the honey. So any time you have a cold or flu, you can just take a tablespoon of that honey throughout the day. Or you can put it into nice warming Tea's nice wintertime tease, too. So it's absolutely delicious. I think you'll enjoy it as much as you'll find it effective. 13. Ultimate Energy with Power Paste: this power paste is really energizing and building to the system. Every ingredient that I've included, this recipe is a wonderful pick me up, both mentally and physically. It begins with a cup of honey, which is a natural energy boost and also full of nutrients. Just make sure you're using raw honey so that those nutrients and enzymes haven't been cooked out of it to that, I'm going to add some molasses. This is black strap molasses and 1/2 a cup of this wonderful for nutrients and building the blood and the bone. It's also very good for the immune system, and it does taste good, too. Then we're going to add Are medicinal herbs these you confined at your co op or health food store? Or you can order them online from the resource is that I've provided for you. This is three tablespoons of each, and the's are dried powdered herbs. The 1st 1 is a straggle ISS struggle is is a fantastic tonic for the system, very energizing, and it's also really good for the immune system, especially for more long term chronic illnesses, but also for the short term acute illnesses, too. Then I'm going to add ash Uganda and the ash Lagonda does not taste all that great. A has kind of a bitter aftertaste, but with all of these other wonderful tasting ingredients in there, you won't notice it at all. Ash Lagonda is one of the best herbs that I know of for brain function. Clearing the mind increases memory and learning and also enhances stamina. It's what we call on adapted genic, so it helps the body respond to life's stressors. And we all have that. Then, finally, the final medicinal herb I'd like to include is ginseng Jensen. You want to be careful of your source. You want to make sure that it has not been harvested from the while that it has been organically cultivated and the resource is that I've provided for you. They dio organically cultivate their gym sing. Unfortunately, it's been over harvested in the wild, and it's really hard to find, and it's becoming quite endangered, So we want to be careful about our uses of Jansing. This is American Gen. Saying there's all different kinds of gin sings it. This is a wonderful adapted genic similar to the Ash Lagonda, really restorative to the whole system. One of those great building tonics, great for mental clarity and increasing cognitive function. So very nice to put in our power paste. Then I have three other I would say culinary spices, but they actually are medicinal in their own right, and they also do boost energy. But I'm primarily adding them into this recipe for their flavor, cause they do taste really good. The first is cinnamon, so I'm going to add a teaspoon of cinnamon, and I also have cardamom, which is a bit strong. I'm going to only add 1/2 a to spoon of the cardamom, but very good flavor. And then finally I have powdered ginger and I'm only going to add 1/2 a teaspoon of the porter ginger because that is also really quite strong. Then I'm going to mix all of this together into my paste, and it should make a nice thick paste if it gets a little too thick. I also have a fruit juice concentrate here. This one is cranberry concentrate, but there's also a black cherry concentrate, which is equally as good in those fruit concentrates. Have a lot of the anthems say evidence in them in anthocyanins, our antioxidant anti a inflammatory and anti cancer. And it looks like this consistency is actually quite nice without it. If you did want to include the fruit concentrate, just add a little less of the honey and molasses so you can get a little liquid in there. So this is a really nice nummi paste. You can store this right in the refrigerator indefinitely. If it dries out a little bit, then just add a little more liquid, the either the honey of the molasses or the fruit. Concentrate to it, and the best way to take this is to spread it on toast. You can put it in T. You can put it in oatmeal, or you can just simply lick it from the spoon. 14.
