One of the big gaps I found in how to study and education is that nobody actually teaches you HOW TO STUDY EFFECTIVELY! This becomes more of a problem particularly if you have been out of education for a while and are trying to get back into learning to study or pick up a new skill.

To make sure we actually understand, before trying to memorise, we look at the Feynman technique. The goal is to attempt to explain a difficult concept to someone who does not have any knowledge of the material and share your findings with the group!

Memory Technique:
I’ll introduce strategies for memorising information. As well as looking at tradition techniques (audio, visual – study cards, practical) I do a mind map using the car and body techniques. The key is how to learn faster to improve study habits.

1. How to study Introduction: however, really thank you for choosing in. Today's lesson is basically going to be all about how to learn or study. So you're probably wondering who I am then. Well, I'm a commercial airline pilot, but I have no, he's been so. In fact, I used to work in a completely different industry, and I decided quite later on in my career that I wanted to make the switch and become an airline pilot. Now, this give me a number of challenges, one of which was, how do I study to become an airline pilot whilst working full time? So I had to solve a number of problems in terms of time. Out is when and figure out how I could study to effectively do both at the same time, get my studies, don't become a pilot and also keep working at a decent level in my full time job. Stay tuned 2. Excuses: first thing we're gonna look at them is excuses. You can always find a really good reason for not doing something. So before we start on a new course or new topic or something one alone, we have to have a really solid reason for actually wanting to do this. But make all sorts of excuses for not doing something and not achieving your potential. I'll give you some of my excuses. I'm too busy with my job. I don't have enough money. I can't give the time. I've got to keep my girlfriend happy now. Fanuel leave. You can absolutely list every single excuse down. But the important thing is to realize that these are just that they're just excuses and negative thoughts that are just there to stop. You reach your full potential. All these excuses and thoughts are just thoughts. You can overcome them and they're not the truth. So you need to get to the situation where you figure out that you're not gonna listen to the excuses anymore and make a conscious decision within yourself that you're going to set your mind and 100% go forward. It is that you're trying to achieve 3. Project - what are your excuses?: So the first exercise we're going to do then is I'm gonna ask you on a sheet of a four paper to list on all the possible excuses. You can think off as to why you can't fulfill your goal, your ambition or whatever skill it is that you want to work on. Once you've written down all those excuses, I want you to look at those excuses and make the firm commitment with yourself and the people around you that you are not going to listen to those excuses anymore. And you're just going to continue now and execute on what you need to achieve. So with you, she of excuses. I want you to scrunch those excuses up and put them into bitten and keeping them in the bin because they're not gonna help us move forward for what we need to achieve 4. Project - What is your why?: The next exercise we're going to do now is I want you to write down why it is that you want to learn this new skill. The reason why could be absolutely any reason. It could be because you want to look after your family. It could be because you want to get out of financial difficulty. It may be because you want to get good grades and go on to university. It could be for two reasons to write down your white guys. The next thing I want you to write down is where will future you be now that you no longer have you excuses holding you back? We all have different goals and different ambitions. So write yours down on what it is that you want to achieve the how good does that feel? Now we've got rid of the excuses, were properly empowered. Now, with a solid reason why we want to go ahead and learn something learning new skill, whatever it is. So let's go for it. 5. Distractions and maximising time: to. The next lesson we're going to do now is to get rid off distractions. So when I started on my study journey, one of the first things that I had to figure out where was my time going and I'll take you through my day so I'll get up in the morning. You know, let's say half seven arm live pretty close works. I didn't have to get up too early. And then I'll be leaving the house about eight o'clock or core plastic to get into work for half past eight, then be at work for most of the day. And then at lunch time I post my lunch. I go down to the canteen on my first go out and pick up a sandwich or something and bring it back in. And I just sit in the canteen chatting to people or being on my phone. Or, you know, Social media or whatever day finishing runner up five or so, maybe heart five. Sometimes I'll do some exciting down to the gym, so that would be another 40 45 minutes, which would have me back home for about six. At six of them, Cook dinner settled down. And then, from about seven 30 onwards, I'll say, Oh, definitely settled for the day. We sat in front of the television watching something and then probably on social media until it's bed time, occasionally the evening apartment broken up by going out to meet friends or whatever. So what I realized pretty quickly on was I wasn't released having much time to invest in myself to improve myself. So if you consider that you want achieve in you go on, you skill. Whatever. You've actually gotta put some changes and put some effort in to the old you to get to the new year that you want. If you just sit there and just do the same thing over and over and over again, well, guess what? You would just keep getting the same result over and over and over again. So it's really important. And the first lesson is get rid of distractions and figure out where your time is going. So once I figured out where my time was going on, the next thing was just trying to integrate some study that I could do consistently around it. So the 1st 1 that I thought was absolutely drink. My time was social media. There's many stats online that showed people, you know, spend on average or check their phones at least like 100 100 50 times a day. And that absolutely saps your time. So one of the most effective things that I did for me that helped me become successful, and I know this sounds quite extreme and may not be for everyone was I totally just closed on my social media accounts, and I tell you the amount of time you will find in a day suddenly it's absolutely staggering. So by getting rid of my social media, which is my main destruction, if being totally honest, I managed to find extra hour and 1/2 or two hours in my day without absolutely changing anything. So the first half an hour came during my lunch break. Well, guess what? I didn't if I wasn't on my phone and social media could use that time for something and then in the U thing, I wasn't just sitting in my phone for an hour or an hour and 1/2 in front of the television . I could use my time for something so straightaway there. I had two hours 6. Project - Distractions audit : So the next exercise I want you to do now is to do in order of your day and find now how much time your spending on distractions so social media or going out, whatever it is, all the things that are potentially stopping your time and taking away the ability for you to improve yourself and get to where you want to be. 7. Organise your study: so the next step now is to organize our study like any strategic goal that we're trying to achieve. You need to have a plan for how we're going to execute against it. So you wouldn't have an athlete, for example, just start running randomly. Don't always make a plan. If you had on Artist who was creating a music video again, they would have a plan of how we're going to attack it. And it's the same for us trying to study or to learn a new skill. We need to have a plan and how we're going to organize cells around it. Now everybody's different and everybody will have different ways of how they like to plant in their study. But I'll just share my example off how I did So First of all, I started by tracking my day from start to finish when I would be studying, So I figured out that one of the big advantages I could give myself in time I had to study was to get up earlier in the day. So I started off by setting my alarm half past four in the morning to start my study before work and again. My plan would say right alarm, 4 30 in the morning. Get down a vehicle, quick cup of coffee and then start studying within 10 minutes or so. Now, the next thing you don't need to do so allocates where it is that you want to study. So you need to find somewhere that is quiet, that is conducive for you to be able to give you 100% focus on studying. You don't want distractions by people walking past or being constantly called out. Just find somewhere that works for you. For me myself, it was just on the kitchen table. But for some of you might be in a study, it might be wherever Battery, aware of it works for you. Once I got my initial study periods sorted and planned, the next step was then to also see Well, how could I maybe take advantage of somebody got decided then and stop planning my day based on taking my iPod into work. And then once I post my lunch break out, get advanced, have my sandwich ready, so I didn't have to go out and get one and then come down. Homer sandwich oven straightaway put my headphones in and then do this study on my iPad for half. Now again, it seems just a small amount, like half now here, 20 minutes there, whatever. But over time it compounds and makes a huge, huge difference on the way I used to think of it is, if I could do half an hour study during the day, it meant that I didn't have to do it an extra half an hour study later on in the evening. And I could just relax and enjoy with my family and with my friends and so on. So with the afternoon all planned out, the next step was Then what was my study going to be in the evening? So this brings me on to the next point is you need to find the best you study. So for me, I study best in the mornings and most effective in the mornings. But some of you will be different, some of you most effective in the afternoon or some of your most effective in the evenings . So you need to find where that is and trying to harness the maximum amount on because I'm most effective in the mornings. I buy us most my study in the mornings, and by the time I got home in the evenings, I probably already done about two or three hours of study each day. So it meant I didn't really have to do anything. So in this study for the evening, I will keep it fairly fluid. In fact, what I say to myself, if I had the energy, I'll do an extra half on hour or now on maximum. But if I don't, then that's okay, because guess what? My seller study has already been done in the morning. 8. Music and Breaks!: whilst we are on the organization plan. One of the things that I want to touch on is music music helped me with my studies in an absolutely tremendous amount. So for music, you need to find music that will help you with the learning process. And for me, I found basically two types of music. That was one type of music which I find extremely motivational. So I used to listen to Eric Thomas podcasts. And if you don't again, I was recommendable advice that you check him out is a great guy. I'm not endorsing anyway. And I'm not trying to sell the annual off his products. It's just purely some of the free stuff I found on neutral that helped me turn the other type of music that also found you saw, but maybe less so I was listening to stuff that's quite soothing in the background. I know it sounds cheesy, but Daniel, for example, now, music didn't always help me for the bulk of the time. I much prefer working in complete and total silence. So once again, that's something for you to figure out and to figure out what you're style is. Some people do very well with classic music. I'm just not one of them. So the final part of organizing your study is to decide on your study intervals. For most people, it's recommended to study for 30 to 40 minute bursts and then take a short break. This method worked extremely well for me. So whilst we're on the topic of organizing your study, it's also important in your study plans to organize how you will take your breaks, your 40 minute break, press pores and then just walk around the house just to get some fresh air for me. And maybe wasn't my best habit buys to take it as an opportunity to go and make another cup of tea. I don't want to load up too much on caffeine and energy drinks is this will have an adverse effect, but just find a way or if it was really only in the morning, I start one of my brakes is making a little piece of toast town with my breakfast. So you just find whatever your break works best for you and work that in to your stay 9. Project - Organising your study: so that basically concludes it for the organization element off the study. And with that, we're going to have a short exercise now where I would like you to plan your study in terms of time, days and when you can commit to it and then also uploaded onto the project. So I z organize and plan. You'll study, however, think off when you would like to study and try and take advantage of when you work best. So are your morning person or are you an evening person? You're the one that I want you think really careful about is the location. Where can you find a place where you will not be distracted and the Final one is? How are you going to stop yourself being distracted, for example, by looking at your phone or checking emails or seeing what someone is doing next door or whatever. So work all this into your study plan and upload it to the project 10. Positive Feedback: Plus, we're going to be looking at study techniques. So the 1st 1 that we're going to look at, which is probably the most important aspect of everything that we will be talking about, is a positive feedback. Now this helps you learn so much better than being negative on. It's really, really, really important to basically count your winds as you go along. Now, studying and learning a new skill is hard. It definitely is. And it could be time consuming could be draining. And it can also be quite isolating because you look around and everyone else is having a good time or have access to do things that you previously had to do because you're committed and you're focused on trying to achieve the goal that you need to get to one of the most powerful ways to be able to keep going even when it's really difficult, is to keep giving yourself positive feedback on What do I mean by this? Some days I would have a really good study days, but some days I wouldn't have as good study days. Now there may be reasons for that. For example, I didn't feel like I was making the progress or there are things happening around me that was making it difficult to really try and focus despite my best efforts. But the important thing is irrespective of how little you do always look at it positively. So on a typical day for me out target to do three hours off study. But sometimes I'm only able to get through an hour and 1/2 or two hours because something untoward happen. But I would always reward myself and be positive about what I had achieved. So even if it was just an hour and 1/2 I'll be positively reminding myself that yet that's a good results. So just keep going, and I want you to try and keep a positive mindset all the way throughout this 11. Motivation: the next massive, massive help for us that's gonna get us through. What we need to learn and study is going to be our motivation. So it's really, really important that we stay motivated now what they started. The class asked me to write down why you're doing this course. So if that's a solid reason, you will have no issues staying motivated, as you can keep referring back to that to find out. The reason why you're doing this help me along the way was I used to speak to people who had achieved what I was trying to achieve. So if it was learning a new skill, find people who have got the skill and that had to go through your process and led to him. If its people are sort of profession, speak to them and talk to them and again, having read and again having regular contact with them and reminding yourself what it is that you're doing will also help. The other thing that really helped me a lot was remaining close to my family and my friends , and I always used to say, hopefully this is gonna make a difference for my family and I used to look at my mom and my dad, for example. And also, hopefully one day this could give me but its success so I could go back to health and family is really, really big motivator. You'll never find anybody, for example, that says, Hey, if somebody's life in your family relied on you, learning the skills and succeeding on it there would find the motivation to get the school loan and to do it, no matter how difficult was that. Try and take the same mindset. You know, if this was the last thing you could have alone on this, how would you behave and how would you do it? And the chances I would give it absolutely everything to try and have that mindset as you trying to go through and pick up your skills. 12. Feynman Technique: So the next technique we're going to study is the Feinman technique. So have you ever been studying something and you find yourself reading for, like, half an hour or whatever and you go through a whole chapter, you get to the end of it, and you think I have no idea what I've just read, but you have actually gone through and read the words right? That's happens to me. It's happened to be planted particular. The material is quite dense, so fireman technique is one of the great techniques that I've found, and it basically works on four main simple steps. The 1st 1 is find a topic and study it. The next part of it is explained that Topic two or five year old. Now this is really hard because a five year old doesn't have any previous knowledge in the subject or in the topic or whatever it is that you're talking about, so you really will need to learn your material after you've done that, revisit and find any gaps that you found. I was trying to explain it to a five year old and in the final bay is then go back and study the material to improve it and then go back in the same loop again 13. Learning Styles & Intro to Memory Techniques: So now we're going to talk about the learning styles. This is in effect, is basically the most traditional way of learning, as I've known it in the love always come by it. So the 1st 1 is auditory learners. So these learners typically learn by listening. So a typical way in order, Giuliano Len is to reading notes aloud, play them back to themselves or typically discuss with other people. I'll be totally honest for me. I haven't really use this because I don't really like it or it hasn't really worked for me . But it might be something that works better for you. I know certain people like love, audiobooks and so on. Yeah, it's just one of those. The next type off learning is visual lining, so you learn by seeing things. Now, this is probably as getting closer to my style off learning and probably for the vast majority where you look at something and then you try and write it down and repeat your memories, diagram and so on and so forth. And this is typically, you know, waited. Use your flashcards and stuff like that again. You have visuals in front of you now the third learning style is space practice. Now my style tends to be between visual and also space practiced because space practices basically just practicing and redoing. Whatever skill that you're trying to learn is so you might do past problems, you might look at exam previous exam questions. Well, you might even make your own questions to try and get you thinking about the topic. For me, I'll say the visual and also the space practice ones are the ones which have tended toward best. My issue with these is there isn't really much emphasis in committing or having the tools that you can commit information to memory. So we are going to look at memory techniques. One of the biggest game changes for me, and that generally changed my life was reading Unlimited Memory by Kevin Horsefly. This book is absolutely incredible, and definitely if I'd find it sooner, I would have been able to take information at a much, much quicker rate than I had previously, using just the traditional techniques that I have discussed so far in terms of audio loading, visual learning and practical learning. 14. Memory techniques continued: So the first of the memory tools that we're gonna look at from Kevin horses book is see, exactly as you spelt with the Acronym S E waters See standard for the S stands for senses and senses. It means using all the available senses that we have as human beings to facilitate the recall in the storage of information in our lines. So E stands for exaggerate what it is that we're trying to recall and see in our minds. And the final e stands for excites. Let's make it dynamic. Let's make it get it moving. And that will improve the chances of recalling to me that's been studied by many others in the past. And Kevin references in this book a lot is based on using your long term memory, plus your short term memory to commit something to medium term memory in quite a short space of time. So using this store, I've been ableto get a lot of information in my head pretty quickly. So, for example, in my profession, in the aircraft I have to learn about hydraulic systems are hydraulic systems are fairly complicated and have a lot of different aspects to it. but using Kevin Store A managed to get ah whole hydraulic system to memory in the space about minute, minute and 1/2. And that was the first time I'd ever seen for the first part of the exercise is going to do it a practical s e exercise to commit something to memory together. The first part of this exercise is to use the C system to complete Oh, commit something to memory that we need two. So for first exercise, then I'll use example of my hydraulic system and feel free to use whatever system you need for yourselves that we need to commit to memory for the first s. Then we need to use all the centers available to us. So the second e is to exaggerate whatever is the scene that we've got in our minds and the final E is too excited. So I will talk you through the animation that I've got in my head. That's help me to remember what the hydraulic system is. You can use whatever example you've got in your own world, but pick something, you know, maybe that has 5 to 10 components into reasonably complicated that you want to learn and just try that as an exercise. You through that My hydraulic system, the animation that's gone in my head and I'm trying to use as many different senses I can. So we're now looking at Hydraulic system A. This is one of the hydraulic systems within the aircraft. Well, I note hydraulic system, so I'm gonna use the letter A and I imagine a the letter a driving a car around erratic e high speed in a on a dirt road. So the first thing that the letter a does is to pull the hand brake. Now, why the first component, the hydraulic system man, I need to remember is the alternative breaks. So the way I make this link in my hat is the handbrake is not the normal break you'd use in the car. It's a different an alternate breaks. I remember straightaway hydraulic system May has got the alternate breaking from there. Character is youngster hand break down. The first thing is going to do on the dirt track is Teoh mess up the ground and the terrain around it has the ties lockup in its kids. So the second component, the hydraulic system that that reminds me to go back to is the ground spoilers on the aircraft. So the grounds for because we're on the ground now and they're breaks of the car for sport , the ground that's called a John existed. So we get this animation. It sounds completely far fetched, but it's such a quick way to get information locked in your heads. Now the car is spinning out of control, and then it starts to go backwards again, just through the mishandling off the car. So the next part of the hydraulic system now remembers a car is going in reverse is the hydraulic system. A controls their number one reverse thrust engine as we're going backwards? So we're now in this yard and the cars create back and it's on a farm. And there is some chickens, which about to be unfortunate, disturbed by the car. So the car disturbs the chickens and she can start flapping some of them jumping into the and so that the next part, the hydraulic system, now is the flight spoiler, so it spoils the flight off these check ins. I know it sounds completely far fetched, but it's just my way of doing this. So hydraulic system realizes the mistake is or she's made now and then now tries to drive away frantically trying to regain control off the car. Next thing that comes to mind is the nose wheel steering off my hydraulic system because the car on the wheels turn. So getting that reminds me off the nose wheel steering hydraulic system is really running out of options now. It doesn't know what to do, so it gives a cruise control ago again in them and animation in my head. And that reminds me off that it commands or a pirate a again. This is just my example. Teoh show how I've learned some information. That's quite complicated, but you can use your own with this animation. So as this is now going past hydraulic system and the car stops, get back control and then realizes somebody started building an airplane but hasn't fitted the rather the L ones and the elevator, and that basically concludes the hydraulic system for me. Now, I know this is very specific to an aircraft, but this is just to show you how through animation and using all the senses so I can hear the hand brakes screeching. I can smell the dust of stuff coming across ICANN, the chickens frying and so on and so forth. You can then start to have seen so no need to remember what the hydraulic system is. I just think of this scene and it's much easier to play back in your head. And the great thing is, you can play it forward. You can play it backwards and you don't lose any of the information. So the exercise that I want to do is to pick something off 10 facts that you need to know and then come up with this scene using at the first eso, use all your senses, your smell, your takes, your touch. You're hearing your site. Everything that comes through now exaggerate things and make them out of life. So used make things far bigger than they should be. Get letters driving cars and again, you you remember this. And as you try to place these things, try and place him somewhere memorable. So for me, most of this thing took place in my grandma's on the yard. My grandma, which is backs onto a farm, basically. So you remember These things quite visited Lee and you never forget them. Now, the Final East excited to get it dynamic and you get things happening to it. It increases the chances of you retaining the information. So that's your first exercise for C. 15. Car and Body Technique: So for memory tools, the whole idea is to try and alter and tweak the way that we learned and absorb information . I'll be totally honest for me. The wave is to note something down, write it out 100 times until it's committed to memory. Was if you use some of these memory tools, it changes that process and uses much more of your brain and makes it much more easier to retain information. By combining all the senses, which I'm going to come to shortly by combining all their dynamic aspects of your brain, you've got an absolutely amazing imagination. So the idea of some of these memory tools is to use our imagination to make it easier to retain information. So the next memory method we're going to look at is basically because technique. So this follows on from what we've just done in C for you've got the senses. You then exaggerate, and then you excite what it is that you're trying to do. Well, a car that you know well allows you basically to place different things around the car in a different way, and that will allow you to almost sequence them and walk through your car to find all these things. Now this method is based purely on imagination. So again you can use your cart, hide things and place things all around the car to get help. You remember things, but the important one is just remember, see, so use all your senses, your eye, sight, smell, taste, hearing everything that you can you can use. And as you place the things into the car, the more you animate them them or silly they are on the mawr imagination use The easier is to place the manual memory, and the technique that is being used here is taking a short term information and combine it with the long term information, which is the car because everyone knows the car pretty well to give us a good chance off a medium term memory on there. So the next placement toe other than your car is to use your bodies. They're starting from your feet all the way up to your head again. Put stuff all the way over your body again, using your imagination, and it's much easier to recall stuff as once you've gone from short term memory by combining it with your long term memory as you know your body pretty well. Who doesn't know their body, that it's much easier to recall things in a particular sequence on a particular order and again use all your imagination for this. 16. Project - Memory Technique: so the exercise is using either the car or body and see principles. Try and learn 10 pieces off difficult information and share what your results are in the class discussion on the project. 17. Closing comments: so to be successful in learning a new skill or something, you need to look after yourself. So you need to sleep well. You need to eat well and you also need to try and work in some sort of exercise. Now, in this lesson, I won't bore you by prescribing what it is that you do and how you do so. But I encourage you to use your common sense and try and come up with a way of managing your body. So it's in the best possible condition toe absorb and take in new information. So all the things that I've shed at today, the really important ones, is try and stays practices you can with the techniques that I've discussed and also the information, the more you look over it, the more you do the things that I've mentioned, the more consistent your performance will be overall and the better the results will be. I think the important things are really to continue to practice all the things that I've spoken about today and to keep your motivation, because ultimately you can have all these tools. But what's gonna make the difference is what we said at the beginning, which is not getting excuses and you having the willingness to go out and to consistently put the work in to be able to get results that you deserve.
