I'm sure all guitarists at some time, have been amazed when listening to Django Reinhardt. We all wonder at his inventiveness, speed and navigation of the fretboard. How did he manage to weave such incredible musical webs, and at the same time do all this with only two working fingers of his fretting hand? It's a bit like bluesman, Robert Johnson down at the crossroads - all we can assume is they were both touched by the devil called genius.

For years I've dipped into his style, working out patterns and mixing them into my own playing of Blues, Ragtime and Jazz. I imersed myself in chords, scales, arpeggios and Django style doodles on the road to solving a little of the mystery. I know there are many volumes of transcriptions available which will help you but It can take years of study to become fluent in this style, and like many players, I felt I didn't have the time or patience. I wanted to take the essence and some of the skills in his playing and make it my own.

So, in 'Let's Django', I will share with you some of the Django secrets I have learned on my journey as a guitarist. The exercises and tunes will give your playing a whole load of gypsy flavour and, whatever the style of your playing, you will gain extra panache and appeal. Like I said earlier, I know there are many note for note transcriptions of Django's famous tunes and I didn't want to reproduce them again here. The tunes here are fairly simple and are in the Django style, using the exercises you will learn on the way. Feel free to adapt them and most importantly use them in your own playing.

1. Introduction: hi. In this, Django will be looking at solo playing single notes and arpeggios, courts and rhythm. Playing that one around, we'll be playing Django tricks and lots of classic jangle star riffs, and we'll be looking at seven original Jenga style cheese on your beeper acting, not scales and arpeggios to give you that Django flavor E . 2. Django Rhythm Style: okay. The first big section will look at is the rhythm playing of the Django Reinhardt style. We'll be looking at 19 exercises, which would give you a sense of this luck pomp style on some of the core progressions on called Sounds, which were used distinctively and in the jungle. Stop. Um, don't forget to download the pdf far and play special attention to videos. So let's go with some rhythm playing. The first part of the course will be concentrating on rhythm playing now. Django had a particular style of rhythm, which was known as a pump. Um, but we'll call that boom chick, and it's simply boom is on the base. Drink and chickens on the trouble Strings on the shape I'm using for this verse exercises a G seven shape. It's quite a nice shape because it moves around very easily, as opposed to the bar shape. Seven. Try and maintain that shape and just boom chick stances low whatever you can do to help yourself with that, so check their well. Now continue on with the rhythm. We have another famous Django shape here, which is the C seven slash G code or the G minus six Chord once again, Very moveable to shame. Just try name for those kind fingers there on once again Boom, chicka boom chick! And of course, you've got the G seven Ford funded by the G minor six court so you can practice that movement between two shapes. Now the next shape we should try and known here is the G minor Barkley shape probably should know that by now. Once again, women check on the other minor shape causes the A minor bark would shape pricing with shapes together like so with that jangle boom chick. Now we'll do Ah, simple 12. By using some of those kind of shapes we've been looking at first with G seven and C seven g chord on D seven slash Aiquile on with plenty from sick to One of the things Jango was very good at doing was using called shapes and inversions moving, Say, the G seven quart into different positions on the neck. And we're gonna try this one g seven, as we learned earlier, moving up to this position now with the shape as you can see from your chart. So try boom chick with that one. Get to D Sevens, working together like that. Ah, a little speed as well. So that's to G seven chords on. The same kind of thing happens with the C seven to the C seven. Inverted core routing from this C seven shape, uh, to the C seven shape and on the two together again, practice that fast and slow. Just get the budget going and maintain Let Bob Bill. So let's try some of those shapes now with a bit of Django 12 our way. Now the diminished courts are an essential shaped alone. If you want to play the Django rhythm style things first ship here looks like that e e You can hear that also practise this middle, uh, sounding in diminishing version with because, Well, that one around on this is the basin inversion to that one around my son. Okay, now that's combined some of those diminished shapes with Django 12 But once again, here we go. One of jangles rhythm tricks was to use to note chords with octaves being played. Um, stretching fingers, as you can see trying to muting the note in the middle on Just go for a chick sound really on try using the same shape in a higher position. Of course, up here like this E leave that one around. Just get used to the two nights working together and try the same exercise using the middle strings to Here we go. This is going from the fifth position right up to the eighth with the little finger. Okay? And then maintain that muted sound once again moved that one around. Now there's a typical Django style. Refusing those actives goes like this. Jang was very fond of using these fast tremolo court passages. Something here playing. So I got that one. I'm just using the C seven slash g chord. You can try it with some of the other shapes to on lots of practice moving from Fred to fret like So, for example, Django used lots of rhythm accords to introduce solo passages or solo pieces. And this is a classic one appears. It goes like this wrap onto this right here, using the courtship. She could see them from your charts. Sounds like this 3. Django Soloing Style: I've broken down the sir settling section 22 parts Really the single notes on the all important arpeggios, which instantly give you the jungle flavour. So there's thes 1st 24 exercises on video already covering just a single notes. And then we'll look at the broken chords arpeggios in the short section that follows this one. So if you want to keep on getting this distinctive Django style, then, uh, work on your certainly on Do some of these will give you that in instant flavour. So look good. Look now getting onto our solar techniques. If you're using a Plec trim, make sure that all these exercises have played generally with an alternating pick. So down and up on this first exercise just gives your picking hand a little bit of exercise . Let's just try that one. Surely that goes with some backing to now. This are picking. Excise to shoes is a faster motivating picks, so watch out for speed on that one. But do give it a go. Now you've had a chance to warm up. Try this chromatic spacing exercise and you'll begin to hear the Django flavor coming right out. Here we go waken extend that chromatic idea now very again. Very jangle risk. If we r play slow you first without the backing and you can see the movement just move up this thing on a little faster with the backing. Destroy that. Now let's extend that chromatic idea over two chords. Wants getting the same kind of movement on, then moving down to the second string on with the backing. It should sound very tranquil. Ask again. Here we go. Now I'm changing the key center to the A seven called Agency on the chart on using this dramatic move and top on a little faster with the backing Destroy that. I'm not going to do the same kind of chromatic movement. Just just descending this time moving using this kind of movement. Try name for some speed. Now, with a bit of rhythm in the backing, Here we go. Django used lots of chromatic devices in his playing, and this is one of his popular ones. It's just moving chromatic movement from third position to third position and using this kind of spacing movement on with the backing once again, it sounds for a Jenga West. Okay, once you've had a good curve. The chromatic exercises that we've tried earlier trying this traditional scanner. This is a G major scale, starting on the third position and with a little swing tempo, I'm backing its again. Sounds very Jenga. Now, this is the same scale. But what I'm gonna do is introduce this. Go with a note before the G, which is 1/4 leading note, and it gives you a little bit more flexibility on speed. You can see how that works. Let's try that with the backing now. Now, if you're unfamiliar with some of these scale patterns, don't forget to check out the review The scale section in your manual. Um, the next example is a seven scale played over G seven chord. Um on it sounds like this with a bit of backing again. Now, Janko used minus goes to great effect. One of the real Morris gypsy sounding scales is the harmonic minor scale. It sounds like this on once again with backing sounds pretty languished. And here's the same kind of sounding scar this time in a higher position. High Rock to one starts here. Let's try it out. And this is the same harmonic minor scale now, this time using a passing tone, as you can see from your chart and with the backing and a bit more speed up. One of the populace. Cow's vagina was the fridge in scale. She's very Gypsy Likas. Well, Scout sounds like this backing sounds good. Now you can hear the same scale working this time over a G seven chord in the backing What's very well, Here's a diminished girl playing this one over a diminished chord, as you can see when your charts scout looks like this now, with the backing now, Django used extended scales of all sorts when we awarded 1/7 scale to Diminish Girl. Now this. Let's try this night scale. It sounds really good with them, with Jeanine called being played in the background. So we have a listen to that. To go. Jango was very fund of the bebop scale, especially in his playing with in the forties, and uh, about that time on a scale. Sounds like this with this passing tone that you can hear and way with backing. And here's the same kind of idea, this time using a much higher on the neck way and there's a minor variation were using the beep up idea. Let's go first for you. Wait. And here's a variation again of the bebop scare, this time extending the first movement up to the seventh box. There, you can see on Ben. We continue with scale. So let's try that with backing to. And there's another high end variation for the Beeb upscale. This way it goes like this with the backing. 4. Django Style Arpeggios: okay, In these next 18 videos, we'll be looking specifically at the arpeggio side of solar plane. On these will give you a distinctive Jenga flavor. They were quite often played very fast. And with these broken chords maybe with your fingers or reflection, however you want you want to play them. Main thing really is to follow videos and see if you can get an angle on some of those some of those arpeggios. So good luck with those Now we're gonna extend our solo ideas into the arpeggio region. Um, that's what we should learn some basic arpeggio shapes. This is a G major federal play, this one first slowly so on Bond. Try with some backing in the swing style. And here's another popular petro shape that goes like this with the backing. And here's another arpeggio, which is in the high position this time Still a major visit. My job goes try with the backing to learning a few minor arpeggios is a must try This Sergey minor arpeggio goes like So now minor arpeggios a great with triplets to try this little one here, I'll just play this one first for you goes OK now faster with backing. Of course. Seventh arpeggios. Very important. Django, start playing. And this is a great example. If you start here with box on, then again at Swing Flavor with backings that good Now we can extend their arpeggio idea with a knife arpeggio, which looks like this. It's just the addition of the eye on the top there, Um, let's get with swing backing. Yeah, now, in this example, we're still using an arpeggio g major arpeggio. But this time playing neighbor notes before each of the arpeggio notes. And slowly, it would sound like so on with backing. And here's the same kind of idea, this time using a minor arpeggio like that on with the backing. And here's another arpeggio idea using the passing toes. This time it goes with fucking Now this one's a great sounding minor seventh arpeggio and very popular with Jane Go So close, um, again, with passing turns way to backing. And here's a slightly different way of playing the arpeggio with a passing tone. Sounds a little quickly, this one just move like this. Try the backing and here's a diminished arpeggio played over 1/7 chord in this sound very Django. You sound just like man. When you play this one, it's a spacing. Arpeggio like So I think this finger spread out there on try it with backing. Now, when you're using these diminished arpeggios, it's a good idea not always to start on the room. So if you're playing in the key of G against Jews seven chord. This sounds very good. If you start on the 30 groups girl, which would be able to be no tear second position. So you play arpeggios starting here. It sounds a little bit more off. Beaten on Very Jenga. You go. Now. This is another a diminished arpeggio on this time starting on the flat seventh degree this time. So we're starting on the F natural here again. It's like more off beat some when you play against the G seven cooled. Just try that one. Now you can also start that term diminished arpeggio on a on 1/5 degree of the scale to and this is what you're gonna do up on the 10th position with Petro that's looks like this on a proper speed with backing and find May. Here's a great diminish on this one starts in the seven position. Now you say, because I think on with backing and proper Jenga style 5. Django Tricks: Okay. I've called this section Django Tricks, and it comprises 26 videos of some classic Django style riffs. If you pay special attention to days, I'm sure by the end of these videos, you'll come up with something something very much like Jenga right now. So do you plan on with videos and the MP threes changed, rips around, make them but your own and turned upside down. Do whatever you want with them, Ben. Things to enjoy, enjoy in style. Now this sections called Django tricks on this one he uses like a chromatic scale. It's kind of a tonal, really doesn't belong to any called, but it seems to work over lots of them. I'm playing this one over a G seven chord, but starting on the string here works equally well over G minor chord or any minor chord or a C Chord or C seven. It's quite versatile, very in one of those things that have played very fast, but I'm gonna play it kind of media tempo with the backing. So we re trial and then here we go and just extending that idea a little further up. The report. Now this one works again nicely over G seven one skin studio on with the backing. Now this one is the same kind of reference the early ones. This I'm using a G minor code has the backing just so you can hear the two working together . Let's try it just to show you that the riff idea works over this other courts as well. We're here is working over on a seven chord, and now we're trying whole movement in a long sweep, right up to the top A from the open e string with the backing Let's go, one of junkers. Great tricks, of course, was covering the fretboard very quickly on one of the ways he did that was using these chromatic notes that we learned earlier. Um, this one just moved. I like so on again with a bit more speed. Sounds a bit more like Django. We can use the same idea at this time, changing the court to d seven slash a. So on we just the lowest dream, the beast during this time. Mistrial Earlier on in the course well learned how to use these neighbor notes with arpeggios on the pressure went like this, um, let's try that once again. You so the same kind of with this time in reverse. So we're going back up this girl rather than down with backing on. Here's another variation of the idea we're moving up again. Let's try that one with back into on the same kind of idea, this time with a knife called for the backing I just played that one studio fits over that shape. Really, I'll just play slowly. I was backing up on here. We have the same idea this time, using a minor called G minor. Destroyed that one once again using thirds. Another popular trick in jangles playing often played very, very quickly, but playlist of medium tempo. So give you a chance That's that's tried chewing you go. Django uses very famous of minor trick is playing 1/2 step below and a whole step above the route Chord in this example is G minor. So we're starting on the G on going a step below on, then moving up the scale like this with the backing famous trick here. Just using ham bronze descending down scale. Right, So, um, probably better with down strokes. If using pick, Let's try that with the backing on, then there This Django trick uses ham bronze from 10. Position right down to the third. And, ah, just suddenly first of this place. So you just goes the way the backing once again using arpeggios. One of Judge Angus tricks was really to cover quite a distance on the fretboard. Quickly, I'm going to use this team major arpeggio shape using this one like that now with the backing deceive how rapid you could make it sound. You need lots of practice in this one on. This is a minor version of that once again. Should be played fairly quickly from the low into the high end. But lots of practice on this one. Let's try this one them with the backing. This is a minor seventh arpeggio once again very quick. Here we go now. Jenga used lots of what we call a condensed arpeggios, which are small groups of arpeggio notes. A few movie first thing got to the fifth position. You've got small part of the sea called here on the little finger for the top part of the pages. So you really got, like, that sound with the backing sounds quite good to just write up. Now we've looked at diminished arpeggios in earlier, in the course of one of one of jungle's great tricks really was messing around with them. This one is like a partial arpeggio played across the strings from, say that a position to the top, a position all in one movement. And it sounds quite quick in eerie to but also quite angry. If you listen to this like so on, you notice I'm actually finger picking this one, but you can do to find it a lot easier myself doing that one. Okay, let's try with the track. Another one of jangles tricks is using extended arpeggios, and this one's based around the A seven called in the backing. Firstly, the arpeggio works this way and then so just seven like that, slightly more interesting as an arpeggio. Let's try it with back into one of junkers famous tricks really boost the play, this ridiculous, discordant flourish of notes you can hear in ragtime playing jazz playing and much later check and seized. It's quite a lot. It's really this discordant effect, say, between any natural underneath any flat on a B flat and being at on F, Sharp and G and then this c sharp d. So it's quite bonkers, really. Let's try it with the track. It makes a little bit more century. One of my favorite Jane Go signature riff says this one, um, exploit slowly for you. And it works really well over a dominant called in this case. I'm playing in the key of G seven, starting on the seventh position there against the natural, So let's try that with the backing. 6. Django Style Ornaments: okay. I think by now we've already incorporated some of these ornaments or Django effects into our solo play in the previous lectures. But just to review them really over the through the four main Jenga ornaments would be the vibrato, the trail the Lysander was slide on DSA um bending eso just play through these next few exercises and just confirm it yourself that you know, some Django ornaments or affects. Now you probably noticed in a lot of the exercises being playing, I've been doing a little bit of what we called Librato at the end of some of the phrases now jangles vibrates. It was very distinctive, very intense and quite passionate. I think it's something. Do it the way actually pushed the string up and down in this kind of movement. Almost like so very unlike maybe a blues for barato or rock for brought So really. But listen to lots of Jang go's music and you can hear him using that some sense of barato . So this play an example of that librato with backing track, not showing how it goes. Another popular ornament is the trill. And as you can see from the charts just rapid movement between your first and your second finger with terrific sounds like this on then with the track, let's play that a few times around to get the idea. Here comes backing. One of jangles checks is on ornaments was to play this glass endo from sliding from the note below two. Like so and e very quickly, it sounds pretty jangle Escalettes. Some try that with a bit of backing. And finally, one of the ornaments think Langer used for Fairmount really was that was bending the notes on in this example. I'm using my little finger to bend up just about 1/2 half bend and then releasing into the next note. So a fairly blue Z lick on very jangle ask. I think that's right with the backing. 7. Django Chromatico: Now we're onto our study tunes, and the 1st 1 chosen for you is called Django Chromatic. Oh, um, from the cycle, it suggests playing chromatic style riffs in the Jenko style. It's great little workout, few fingers. Andi conjures up the gypsy jazz flavor once again. It's based over over a 12 bar just to give us an easy core progression to start with. But do try and transpose this one in two different keys or play fast and slow but suits. And I think when you listen to the track and you watch video, you'll soon soon hear how it comes up the Django flavour. So lots of work on this one on. Good luck, Django chromatic. Thank you. 8. Blues For Django No.1: so blues for Django number one. Once again in this 12. Our study uses classic Jenga style riffs, which you can turn upside down. Change around whatever you like to do to get play faster. Slow Watch the video closely. Do the pdf palate at this time and also played on with the MP three backing for Django. Number one. Let's go, please. We're trying a number one again uses some of the iPad years and tricks that we've learned in the course so far. Um, fairly nifty this one. So watch out for the backing. Try and keep up with a way. 9. Blues For Django No.2: on DSA. More great riffs here with police for Django number two Uh, this is another blues in the start of Django. Once again Lots of the tricks that we've learned so far Chromatic runs on diminished arpeggios Watch out for those to take the track and see how far we go E. 10. Gypsy Blues: in Gypsy Blues, we have some classic minor Django playing short but sweet once again over 12 pattern to give you a little chance to advice for yourself. So let's have a go of Gypsy booze. 11. Rick's Minor Swing: Rix Minor swing is a kind of cheeky, kind of look out the minor swing, the classic minor June by Django Reinhardt that they come a little longer this time but uses once again some of the classic minor scales that Jenga was famous for. Don't get you can change these around little bit. Do your own riffs in some of the bars. Whatever you like to do, just get as much of it as you can. Let's Django: Okay, so let's jangle. This is the signature tune of the peace, and it's probably the longest one uses most of the riffs and exercises that before we tried so far in the whole course. So it's quite a long piece, but I think it's well worth trying on. Don't forget. Once again changed riffs around you, whatever you like to it. Don't get Teoh play along with the MP three fast but slow and make the most of it, so let's Django. 13. Clouds: So now on to the last time you change this one's called clouds. Very, very loosely based on new, large, famous Django. Kind of called coaching. Um, lots of chords in this one which are great to play. Great surge anger with sounds, uh, feel free to change around. This is, Ah, great court exercise of nothing else. So good luck with cloud way.
