About This Class

About this class:

This class is all about Visual Texture, which is the illusion of physical or actual texture in a painting. That means you can create the look of texture on your surface while the surface remains flat.

Texture, like any of the elements of art, can enhance and support the concept behind your work. Some artists use texture to influence our response to their work. In any work of art, however, texture can draw us in so we spend more time with the work.

Texture can be visual or actual. Because this is such an in-depth subject, there are three classes on texture in order to keep the information bit size and digestible for you. The next two classes will cover actual or physical texture.

What Will You Learn?

  • To make your paintings even more dynamic - no hummers.
  • What type of 'tools' needed to create visual texture.
  • How to create visual texture in many different ways.
  • How to incorporate visual texture into your work to add interest and depth.
  • How to create visual texture by watching my demonstrations.
  • The techniques covered can be used with acrylic, watercolor or oil paint.

What You Will Need:

Other than your palette, paints, and brushes, you will need the following:

  • Pad of real canvas or 140# cold press watercolor paper
  • Mixing knife
  • Brayer

Visual Texture Tools

  • Plastic wrap and wax paper
  • Adjustable spray bottle

Donna Jean Engstrom

Mixed Media Artist and Creative Explorer

I've been an artist and teacher for over 30 years. Yikes! That's a long time, eh? Well worth every single minute. I love teaching and bringing the joy of creating to those who think they can't. You know who you are, 'can't draw a stick figure' come to mind?

My classes are easy to follow, full of encouragement with a dose of challenge, and based on my many years of teaching drawing, painting, collage, and bookmaking classes.

I'm a signature member of the National Collage Society...
