1. Welcome!: My name is Robert Strauss. I'm a music producer, artist, musician, recording studio guy. Over the next hour, I'm going to share with you some of the experiences and teachings of my life working over the last two decades is a creative, whether you're a creative professional and you're already immersed in your craft, or you're someone who's just looking to start out. This is a series of practical tips and career development advice to help you further defined your essential voice. In this course, we're going to help you shape your career plan, set actionable goals, exploit your creative potential, find a community, and promote your work. This class will help you to get your first clients or get the most out of your existing ones. All of this will somehow making sense of this crazy journey called life. Ready? I'll go in. This is great art, requires great risk. 2. Defining Origins: Why it's important to fail: Hey there. I'm Robert Strauss. My friends call me Jaffe. I'm here to help you explore the deeper sides of contemplation in terms of approach fulfillment and ultimately, success. So before we get started, let me take you back to where it all began. Wow. Way back when I was a Mini Me, Yeah, I had absolutely, absolutely no doubt about what I wanted to do when I was a young kid, Um or younger, younger kid growing up in a creative household. Both my parents were creatives. My mother was an artist. My father is a graphic designer and entrepreneur. So you get the sense that there is this kind of possible road ahead for you as a creative that the dream could somehow turn into a life. Ah, and a possibility. Now full stop. I understand that's not the norm. And I also want to share with you that there is a trade off in terms of growing up in that kind of environment. So the grass is not always greener. However, it did leave me with some very clear objectives in terms off what I wanted to achieve. And so moving through my teenage years in post high school. I had it in my mind that I was going to be more famous than Mick Jagger. In fact, I told my mother I was definitely gonna be more famous than the tagger, The poor woman. And, uh, yeah. Okay. You know what? I didn't I didn't understand what it meant to be famous. Ah, but I did get signed to a major label and moved to the big city, and I got signed is a singer songwriter. But lo and behold, the whole thing did come crashing down because I hadn't developed my foundation emotionally like I was 18 years old. How was I gonna have the maturity and get all this life experience along the way whilst being highly prolific, yet visible in a public context? So, needless to say, I did reach this breaking point where, you know, I literally crashed and burned and gave away all my belongings. Ah was working full time as bike is a cycle courier in the snow outdoors in Canada For a year, I was either going to take control of my life so as either going to join the army or become a fashion model. Clearly, the life plan had come to be so nonetheless. Um, it was really hard, as you can well imagine. And these are the moments thes air, the soul galvanizing moments that help you to really understand what you're really made off and what's really important to you. So for those of us who've had a glimpse of the dream and it's just slipped away, it's a very interesting first experience with failure, which I think is a very key and working example of why it's really important to fail, because I started to reflect more deeply on the subject off why I was aspiring to these things. And ultimately, I recognized either in the short term of the long term that these ambitions largely were ego fuelled. And it's what we project into these desires that really results in lack of of filming. And you can see that everywhere you can see that in all kinds of mainstream examples of those who chased the elusive, larger than life scenario. So it really helped me to take away a deeper understanding of what life fulfillment could be, and for me, what I wanted my life to be all about 3. Defining Origins: Service over self: so moving forward down the path, I started to really understand the power of providing service to others. And for me, that took shape in the form of helping other musicians, other artists to record their own music and eventually helping other artists to learn how to record their own music. I started to teach, which is an amazing opportunity. So initially the idea was really challenging because I hadn't developed the skills to be able to express myself as an artist creatively while doing the technical stuff. It was like a juggling act. So it was about a 2 to 3 year period where I really got the skills together and eventually I had developed this independence and this freedom, where I no longer had to rely on a label for support or anyone for outside funding. And ultimately I had increased my fidelity or my communication ability to take something from an abstract concept or an idea in my imagination, right out into the outside world in the realm of Manifest. So the other blessing in disguise waas that in doing so, in assisting of the artist, I got access to a perspective of an entirely different world When you're working in the scope off, assisting others, you're in different genres. You're in different levels of musical ability. You're seeing things from another person's perspective, which is off enormous benefit when you are a creative person. To be a witness in the realm of someone else's creativity is is a huge blessing. So this is the power ah providing service to others. This is also the power of being diverse within your own skill set. So ultimately in what we're saying here is, invest in yourself. Invest in your creativity. Invest in your skill set and B as self contained and autonomous is yourself autonomous as you can because it will on Lee benefit you in the end. And this was for me. It was the best decision I ever made in my life. So I wish that for you 4. Defining Origins: Why goal setting is so hard for creatives (and why you should): So what is creativity? Creativity is thinking within a preset paradigm in a way that is not so clear to other people, so that there's a different result. Creativity is working within the context of a particular limitation or medium. In order to express yourself without the medium, there's no there's no context for of organization as to how we express ourselves. So the same applies to creativity and goal setting, which seem like they're really contradictory and deeply opposed to one another. Artistic ambitions are free spirited and wild. Goal setting is very intellect oriented, structure related and linear. Most of us, I would imagine, in creativity, don't really think about, you know, a future beyond some vague concept of what we want to achieve, Um, but whether it's down to personal training at the gym or strategic mind mapping at, you know, a corporate level, it's proven. And it's just a fact of reality that when we manifest thes specifics as to what it is we want to achieve and we put pen to paper, and then we start to work towards that an immeasurable way, meaning that there are there's a timeline in place. It's just it's on Lee obvious that you will inevitably get much closer to that goal now. Whether you'll achieve that goal or whether that goal will change is a whole different story, and that's not up to us. That's the wind. We are essentially angling our sale in a particular direction. I understand that setting goals is scary. It's scary because it puts us on the line. It it brings out our accountability in a context where it can inhibit creativity and it can inhibit some of the free flowing ideas. When all of a sudden we're trying to become something or we're trying to project something or that's really that's that's the opposite of what I'm suggesting we do. I don't want us to try and do something here. We don't need to. We don't need to make an effort. We need to simply allow things Teoh to be, and that's part of what we're gonna get to down later in the course. But at this stage, what I would like you to do is to try and consider the power of goal setting and measurable goal setting for your careers, your ambitions on putting yourself out there. I think whether you're just beginning in this. Ah, in this art thing, creative thing or you're further down the line. It's always a great exercise to check in with yourself. And really look at that five year plan. Where do you stand in the grand scheme of things? How are we along that timeline? I mean, I understand that there are expectations that we set up within the realm off putting ourself, you know, pen to paper in, ah, in a state of commitment as to what it is we're looking to achieve. But that doesn't mean that it has to be carved in stone. It's obviously something that you're going to shape and mould along the way. But nonetheless, having really clearly set measurable keyword goals can really help you to maximize your creative ambitions on some of the dreams that you have for yourself. 5. The psychology of success: Great art requires great risk: now this next area is a little outside what you would call developing your career path, and it could be considered more in the personal development section of things. But I also think it's really it's really significant to acknowledge, um, not only the the surface and or active aspects that were productive within our brain and also in our activities in the outside world, but also some of the internal mechanisms of refinement or ways that we can ultimately find the path forward most positively, most efficiently and most joyfully as we progress through the stages of our personal development and a professional development. So I divide those into two categories. Love. And when you thought I was gonna say hate, didn't you know love and fear. So love versus fear. What's the deal? The deal is in between these two worlds. There's this thing called the ego. So let's talk about how that factors in to this whole equation. There's a concept as creatives as artistic people. I'm sure you've come across. You may even have experienced it yourself. It's called perfectionism. At what point is good? Good enough. Those who have really mastered their abilities to reach the most people and have maximum impact within their domain are often those who have mastered their ability to accept good enough over perfectionism. And a lot of that really comes down to, uh, self love. Now I'm not talking about self love in the egotistical or big head, big headed sense of self love. I'm talking about this kind of self love that recognizes the value off authenticity and direct communication with people without fear to be championed over all other forms of communication so that you can reach your audience or so that you can reach a wider audience so you can see how this whole thing starts to expand. And it's almost like this three dimensional, you know, multifaceted synchronicity that's happening here within the area of love, fear in the ego. So let me, let me elaborate social media. We project what we want people to see. I'm therefore put up walls that prevent people from actually seeing us so authenticity vulnerability, recognizing that it's actually the bridge towards a deeper and more powerful connection with your audience, stripping away emulation, stripping away the desire to follow a familiar path since Lee simply because someone else has done this before. A style A sound. But at some point, really, the true path for is to is to carve out your own space and ultimately to create this island of your own vision of your own individual sense of, uh, Dekel declaration. Um, that involves great risk on I have a saying that Ah, I really love, which is that great art requires great risk. And it's so true, you know, uh, so much to say on the subject. Ah, but I think these are just some of the touch points. I want to kind of get the conversation started in your mind to do some deeper research on because they've really been, uh, very powerful and of great value to me. 6. The psychology of success: Perfectionism vs: So on the subject of perfectionism, I'm going to wrap it up in these two areas. Number one life is a work in progress. It's all about the journey in that Ah, the most rewarding aspects of creativity throughout my creative life and, ah, ongoing to this day have really been about the effort and the story in and around the process behind what I'm doing. No one is going to judge you harder than you're going to judge yourself. The sooner we can step outside of that realm on, just simply be. I know it sounds like something that is often talked about, but in reality is much harder to do. Ah ah, at the same rate, I think it's going to bring you so much more value in terms off the end result of your work connecting with more people the meaningful connections you have with people through your creativity, Um, but also your relationship with the process on how it really helps you to endure ah, lifetime of creativity as opposed to trying to do something and ultimately succeeding or failing, which is really not what it's about. So there's another area as well that I know is gonna be a touchy subject, and it's it's in the realm of perfectionism. As they say, These are all things that I face myself. So thus I would bring them to our collective attention for appreciation, the importance of sharing now, sharing in the verbal sense of telling people who you really are, or talking about the things that you may have fear he worked in and around discussing in the context of your art. But ultimately, who we are as creative people and what we are is creative people is communicators. Now I understand. Not everyone is gonna want to be up front center and bearing their soul in front of a huge crowd or in the scope of a public domain, but at the same rate. Really, what we are is essential. Now I'm getting really deep but spiritual beings and our essence, whether it be has, you know, manufacturing cars or working behind, you know, a desk, typing and information, or holding a paint brush in your hand. Essentially, it's about our our purpose. And if we are able to really allow others to feel that essential positivity on a very core level that we ultimately externalized thru this creative passion that we have, um, the less there's a filter there, the less that we are inhibiting and standing in our own way in the context of our own creativity, the better. So sharing is really important sharing early on in your creative process, sharing all the phases, not the perfect. It's untouchable and high gloss at a distance, you know. Ah, impressive and intimidating version of you. I mean, there's so much of this out in the mainstream and out in the, um on a media and largely is the tone of a media and and different times in different eras . We had, you know, vulnerability as appealing or ah, authenticity is appealing. But the truth is always in style, meaning that, um, it's something that I always gravitate towards. It is something that I'm always working to get nearer to. His authenticity is I realize it's it's truly the bridge to a deeper connection with your audience. 7. The psychology of success: Finding a purpose larger than yourself: We've talked a little bit of love. Let's talk a little bit about this thing called Ego. So a great example of ego and how it had how it had diminished my potential as opposed to enhance my potential. Waas early on as a creative person where I was in the mode and headspace that I had to do everything myself. Now this could be perceived in a number of different ways. It could be that I was the one that wanted to be recognized and validated, and I think that was probably true. But it was also coming out of this deep insecurity in this fear that I would lose control of my vision and I think we can see that very clearly in others we can certainly feel it in relationships and what I realized as life progressed through different experiments of creativity and different relationships on experiments in the in creativity is that the sum of the parts is so much greater than the individuals, and the outcome and experience of the outcome is so much greater than the sum of the individuals. And this is the magic power of collaboration. I also want to talk a little bit about service and the value of being selfless to your work . If there's any fear or insecurity in around whether people will like your work, ultimately, first of all, you really have to have, like your work yourself. It doesn't matter whether someone else obviously thinks it's good. You have to really, really love it yourself. There is this higher self that transcends the human person, the divine self, essentially, which can do things that go way beyond what Certainly I know how to do in the context of my consciousness in my human mind. And that higher self Onley appears when we step out of the way, well, our ego and our control mechanisms to stand back and to let go of control. The power of art that's made through that lens or from that perspective has a magnetism that just goes far and beyond. And a lot of people talk about viral concepts, you know, incredible ideas that just explode. They explode for a reason because it's a rare occurrence that you have someone who's pure and true about their approach and trusting and loving enough selfless enough. So let their light shine in a way that could potentially transform their life. And that is an opportunity that exists for you if you're of the mind set that you want to be of service to your art and not allow fear to dominate that conversation. 8. The psychology of success: Success is who you are not what you do 2: Wow. So one of the biggest areas of self neglect or even self abuse I can think of is comparison and self comparison. Because there have been multiple times I've found myself first thing in the morning or in a social context, caring about other people, or perhaps on social media, where I am feeling somehow insecure and overwhelmed by someone else's success or perceived success. This is a constant narrative within the realm of social media. I'm sure it's something you're well aware of. It has taken me absolutely nowhere. It seems to lock myself into a state of feeling, a state of being. And one of the ways that I found has been really beneficial to change and turn my perspective within the moment around, but also shape and form the possibilities forward. In and around. Who I've become is a narrative that Ivan still deeply within myself as a mantra. And if it's something that you need to say to yourself aloud, as ridiculous as it sounds, then say it, which is? Don't compare yourself to someone else. Simply be the best version of who you are. Don't try and live someone else's life. You don't know what their story is. You don't know what where they're coming from, where they're going ultimately, But you really can only a very best be the best version of you as compared to yesterday or is compared to the week before. So simply finding ways to pull yourself back into that modality of simply running your own race and recognizing it's not about what you do that matters not about the success externally. Now listen to me, because these are just not words. These are These are really essentially like doorways into a higher form of residents. And elevation will allow you to open up new relationships with people that will allow you to facilitate in ways that maybe with the blinders off of self loathing on you'd not of being able to. So really, um, it's about understanding. It's not about what you do that matters. It's about who you are within, and it's about how you are within If there needs to be a measurement of success, make that your measurement of success and to take it one step further. It's about how you are to others and with others, you know, how kind could you be power and control and isolation is taking our planet and taking our species to the brink of extinction. And the higher self knows that, and as a one, consciousness we need to transcend that. We need to take the individual I out of the context and apply the way into all areas, including the we of self, like the we of self love that we have self acceptance because when you're in that place, you're in total harmony with the universe and incredible things happen. So try and allow yourself. Allow yourself to simply be comfortable doing the bus you can running your own race, not comparing yourself to someone else and realizing success is who you are, not what you do. 9. The psychology of success: Magic happens on the other side of your comfort zone: and so the last point in the fear Love, triangle, Fear, love, ego Triangle is the concept of working outside of your comfort zone getting comfortable with fear. I'm not talking about just any kind of fear. I'm talking about the kind of fear that you know that you're working in a domain, that you're uncomfortable. You're working in a new genre. You're working in a new medium. Ah, you're working at a new level of vulnerability. This is This is where the gold is that this is where you'll find your finest moments. And essentially, you really refined your path is a creative person. I think it's really a huge value toe. Look at your relationship with fear and understand that as you progress and as you pushed through these walls that will allow you to soar to new heights and do things you know that you can. You've often felt maybe that you weren't quite ready for as long as you're open to change and you're you're willing to let go of control and not have that ego approach and just flow with what is coming going to come to you, the only thing to fear is fear itself. When an incredible opportunity this life thing is, and don't let fear stand in the way 10. Making it happen: Getting your first clients: in the early stages of my career, when I was 23 or 24. I've got together a lot of the basic skills to work as an engineer in my field. So I thought I'd try and find a job at one of the major studios in town, a major recording studio toe up my game. So I was walking around, handing out my resume and looking for opportunities, any glimpse of hope and finding it very difficult, for obvious reasons. Thean er circle In any industry in every industry, it's a closed circle. So the one person at, uh, one of these rooms I was knocking on doors who was willing to talk to me, said and remember it very clearly. Basically, he said, In order to get work, you need to create impressive work and I was like, Oh, so essentially, what he was saying to me is, you need to create your own opportunity. So how do you do that? So there are two ways to do that. First is to develop yourself as the artist yourself, so exactly what it sounds like. If you're a writer, you write that book the other way to do it, and obviously you're not getting paid to do this. The other way to do it is through collaboration, which is obviously exciting for a number of reasons and opens up its own creative challenges at the same rate. Um, but, for example, through collaboration, if you're in graphic design, for example, you could do a series of logo designs done for free with an upcoming fashion brand. Or if your music producer like I am or whatever you know, a musician and audio engineer. Ah, you would invest in those key artists. Those core projects that you know are going somewhere, and what I mean by invest is your building up your portfolio by investment spending so that you're getting these no compromise results. Now here's the here's Here's the rub. Here is the game is that whilst we're learning whether that's just out of high school postsecondary university, what have you or even in through the mid, sometimes advanced stages of your career, you're going to find it very difficult to get paid to produce that kind of output, the quality of work that you need to attract a level clients, so you need to find a way to do that. And the best way to do that is to focus on more than one concept at a time. Investing, creating your own opportunities as opposed. Don't expect opportunities to always drop in your lap. This is a kind of to see that you want to grow and develop, because as soon as your own project or that collaborative project or those artists that you're involved with that you believe in and you've done work for free, um, with starts to hit and becomes a going concern in terms of the popular mainstream or the marketplace, people will want to work with you. People will absolutely want to work with you or in the immortal words off now. Rogers Musician. Once you have a hit, the clients will come looking for you, so focus on your work. Focus on developing your portfolio, having that second trajectory along the while while you're trying to get those paid gigs at the same time, make sure you work for free as well. And write that book developed that brand record that song. Make your hit and fast track your way towards greater advancement by developing your portfolio 11. Making it happen: Know the value of your own work: as creative artists. I find it difficult. We find it difficult knowing pricing and knowing the value of our own work. Art and money will always be at odds. They're not necessarily coming from the same place. And it could be very difficult if you are in the negotiation. Phases yourself in terms of pricing and knowing the value of your own work and how to go about putting it out there in the in the right context. So, for example, if you're developing your career and you're investing in that portfolio and you have a key project or a partner, you've invested in your essentially working for free, it's really important that that free doesn't suddenly get taken advantage off, you know, so picking the right partners, understanding that, um, having confidence in your work in its value, even if it is provided for free, is key, because otherwise people will take advantage of you. The other thing that I would suggest in terms of putting your work out there in the marketplace, is to make sure you, uh, try to keep the standards value high in terms off your the perception of your work. And it's price point in the marketplace. A long lines peers or aspiring peers might be coming in at, uh, for example, if a client has two or three quotes that come in. And although maybe you're less experience than some of your other potential competitors, you come in at a price that similar has a much better chance of you getting that job. If you're coming in less expensive or to cheat, it will somehow appear that your work is less good and this is a key. A key focus point here is to understand that if something is less expensive or if it's too cheap, it's perceived is less good. So understand the value of your own work to the best of your ability. Maybe look at pitching prices just slightly outside your comfort zone and recognize that it's going to work to your advantage. If you have to put in a little extra work to reach that next level so that you're able to deliver the kind of content and quality that clients you normally pay more will deliver, then go for it. Yeah, this is the value and the importance of knowing the value of your own work 12. Making it happen: Seed clients: one area that I think is really cool to consider and as I look back I realize is of great significance is understanding the value and importance of a seed client or clients. Essentially, the initial contacts that you have or relationships you build will grow from a small group of people and then through referrals. If something's good, people talk about it, they share it, they tell their friends, and you get more and more so more of people that you love working with and you feel your very aligned with. You resonate with or more of people that really don't understand your message, and you feel like you're kind of out of alignment with is this is really important because you will find yourself in a large pool of like minded clients in and around that trajectory of that first client or that initial seed client that you took on board. So being mindful of the relationships and again authenticity, XKE try and be authentic about the relationships that you invest, your time and your energy, and even if you are getting paid, one thing that is of utmost importance is understanding that the client is number one you are in the customer service industry, even if you're on the production side of things, treat the client like you're the client. So, for example, if you were on the other end of that phone or email and or a creative decision, I would you want to be spoken to. What kind of things would you like to know in terms off the perspective that as a creative person you are seeing things through a supposed to being caught in the realm of creative collaboration and a power struggle? It's not a place you want to be with a client, so understand that you're really there to fulfill their dreams in their vision on, I think the best collaborations come through empowerment essentially, when a client understands their hiring you to be you and not trying to dictate what you should be doing. And I have been in those situations before where I have literally stepped back and said, You know what? I think you know exactly what you want, and nobody else can do that better than you could do it yourself and that's OK. It's OK. But nonetheless, it's really important to understand that, you know, having our ego fully and check is creative people and recognizing like, Hey, if I were that person, how would I want to be addressed? How would I want to feel when I'm expressing my ideas in this context? You know, in often times I find that clients are intimidated, you know, because they're paying us as creative people, so we know better. But I think every idea is a legitimate idea is a valuable idea. Onda. There is no stone that should be left unturned. And so faras possibility. So always hear out the client give them the full respect, even if it really only helps to create the best and product in the end, or ultimately not only the best end product, but also the best customer client based relationship. So, um, the importance of understanding the client is essentially the most important thing, and also that you are still were ultimately in the service industry on to try and work that to your advantage and develop that in your communications after you've done a great job with the client and you've got the job done there really happy? Uh, that moment asked politely. If maybe you could offer them a little discount next time round, or even just out of kindness that they would be willing to leave a review online for you and your services, Um, using one of the major platforms out there for customer reviews because it will help others to find you and your services on the Internet. 13. Making it happen: Creativity in business: creativity in the world of business is also a huge value, often creativity in and commerce, or, uh, but at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of the desires, the desired outcome, but truthfully there much like art and limitations there two sides of the same coin. So essentially creative problem solving is a huge benefit in the context of negotiation. And I would draw highlight to your awareness of the fact that you can certainly use your creativity in the realm of business, often times finding yourself in new territories of, um, opportunity or negotiation with either a client or a landlord or anyone essentially, who really is approaching things in a status quo, modality or mentality of the way that things have always been done. But, um, innovation at it. It's It's pure base level is creativity. So really don't exclude the possibilities of your, uh, scope and functionality within business as a creative person, simply because you don't know all the rules and you don't have all the all the terminology , often times just simply having that naivete and that creative intuition as to how to look at creative problem solving in a fundamental level from a different perspective to the majority of people who are accustomed to looking at it from one or two angles is a huge advantage. 14. Making it happen: Say 'Yes' with authenticity: Okay, I admit it. I'm a control freak while I'm at least move recovering Control Freak and one of the areas that was most, uh, grotesquely obvious for me, that was the biggest challenge was collaboration and also delegation. So name for me, any one company or business that has become significant in the global or grand scale of things. Grand scheme of things that is run by one person who does everything themselves. Okay, so you get my point. The idea of taking on a job simply because it has been offered to you is not necessarily the right thing to do unless you really feel that that job is right for you as a creative person and you can really help that client. However, the opposite approach is telling clients that we can't help them and losing out on an opportunity. So referring that job that's come to you, that maybe a trusted friend and colleague would do a better job for or at as opposed to doing it yourself is the right thing to do. It's the right thing to do because I feel very strongly about having passion for what I'm doing and making sure that at all times. I'm acutely aware of the fact that if that if that creative process is not really close and essentially near to my heart, it's going to potentially damage me in some way in the context of selling my art or commercializing my art. And it's a very dangerous place to be, So it is wise to recognize when something isn't really resonating for you to pass it on to someone else. You can mark it up. You can certainly invoice on behalf of your company and have other artists who work with you alongside to open up the purple referee and perspective of what you're capable of, um, creating for clients. But ah, it's just it's a win win all around, and I would encourage you to say yes to people. But say yes in a way that you feel you can authentically say yes, that you feel that you could do a great job for them either by doing it, doing that creative job yourself Azaz, that core contact person or is part of me is that core creative person or, um, to have the wherewithal to find the right person who can really do a much better job for them, for you, for them, for you, for everyone 15. Making it happen: Developing multiple income streams: Yeah, So having multiple income streams is a good idea. Uh, so he says, I have found myself relying on one or two key clients as bread and butter clients who have allowed me to. Relatively speaking, um exists with minimal effort and maximum results financially, and then have that carpet pulled out from under me and suddenly recognize that value of diversification is key. So while this son welts, the sun is shining, make sure that you put time and energy into multiple income streams into, if possible, different mediums. At times, I've done everything from Web design paid Web design, graphic design. Teoh obviously, all my music related stuff, and I'm sure for each and every one of us we tend to define ourselves as what we are specific in terms of specialized as creatively so. Artists, musicians, graphic designers, videographers. Ah, you name it stylists, but nonetheless, we're creative people. So whilst the sun is shining, it's very easy to forget. The fallback is imperative as self employed, a freelance creatives ah, at all times to have a Plan B and to make sure that you've planted seeds for these unexpected twists and turns in the road that seem to happen 16. Making it happen: The art of perspective: So we're in the 21st century now more than ever, as compared to 10 2050 years ago as creative people, as people in general, um, were exposed to a wider range of stimulus and experiencing media in a farm or impacting and significant way, whether you're on the consumer side or whether you're on the content creation side, people are taking in information on their phones. They're in the kitchen cooking and looking at their tablets, and on rare occasion they're actually taking a moment without distraction to focus on what it is we put out. There is creatives, but it's a rare moment. Prior to modern times, it was possible to immerse yourself as a writer in the realm of writing or as a filmmaker in the round room of filmmaking. But now it's almost like we're almost expected to communicate across multiple mediums. And if we don't, there is huge loss of opportunity. So really, what we're doing, it's two things. One is to be able to get a greater sense of overview of who we are as creative people. Ah, and I'm gonna show you how we do this in a second and the other is to, uh I have greater perspective and reference points or a defined sense of criteria, as we're then sharing ideas across all of these mediums as to what we're really about, what we're really about or where we're coming from as creative people. Now, some would describe this as branding or, uh, some kind of like a, you know, brainstorming. But the tool that has really helped me to get a more clear in and deeper understanding and more, uh, robust perspective on my creativity is mind mapping. What mind mapping does is it allows us to take a very abstract concept and visualize it in a literal way in a sort of linear context that somehow interlinked in the same way thoughts are connected to one another. Now, whether my mapping appeals to you as a person who wants to see things visually or someone who is more of an internal thinker, finding your creative voice is a lifelong process. It's something that's constantly going to grow and evolve. So I am hoping through the discovery of perspective that the tool of mind mapping will allow you, at the very least, to have some fun and to play around with some of the different imagery that it might conjure up, and perhaps even some of the unexpected, um, alignment between some of the different areas that maybe you hadn't considered otherwise. Developing your Scene'ius: What is a 'Scenius': there's this concept of we're not able to get exposure until we've developed some kind of momentum in our career. But yet we're not able to develop momentum until we get exposure. So the Catch 22 applies. Um, imagine in nature that you could visualize yourself as this like tiny, tiny sprout of a tree and in and around all of these tiny sprouts of trees. There are these massive, huge underfoot redwood trees, the tall trees of the ones who have access to all the sun. They're the ones that have access to all the exposure out of these little sprouts get to be big trees if they don't have access to the sun. Um, there's this concept of there only being so around, and that the competition is really what is preventing the individuals from rising. And that's not the case. It's the ecosystem, and it's the importance of it's the importance of the scene versus the individuals. And one of my favorite musicians is a guy named Brian Eno, who's a great music Producers, worked with David Bowie and all kinds of incredible artists, and he's he's coined out in popular consciousness. This this phrase of a seniors and a senior asses the idea of the great ideas coming from the majority of people and that those who are currently looked at in modern society as the geniuses, they're simply the ones who are recognized for it. But ultimately, these air shared ideas, and this is community based intelligence, not individual intelligence. So let's talk a little bit about how this could work for you. 18. Developing your Scene'ius: Creating your community ecosystem: so essentially, what the seniors thing points to is a series of interdependent relationships which are essentially mutually beneficial. Um, in nature. It's called symbiosis when you have one species that works, too, how the survival of another species and vice versa. But the same applies to art and culture in community in life. And what's really interesting about this as well is it's kind of at the complete opposite end of the spectrum with regard to hire, key and power and ego. Because essentially what we're looking at here is is developing a Siri's or fostering and nurturing trust based relationships within our within our own social groups, but within the wider context. So the seniors concept could be applied in a very obvious way. One is a YouTube channel, obviously having a platform off support to feature and engage with like minded creative artists and individuals, as well as learn more about their specialization and some of their approach in terms into how they go about the details of their work. Um, another great platform is to host a social event or a workshop. Invite artists over to your space, your house, or you could do it online and essentially feature different artists and creative people to be featured and to share Maura about their story and ultimately to share behind the scenes , um, details about what they're working on within the process and and and ultimately to to share the essence of themselves within a trust based environment. I have hosted a Siris of these events. I think we've done about 12 of them now at the studio on the night's air Superfund at the end of the evening, everyone's of such an ecstatic mindset that they just can't wait for more. So I highly recommend the concept of hosting ah social event or, um, public Event workshop, a YouTube channel. Ah, podcast. Anything that can kind of allow people to come together over a mutual subject of gen of a subject of mutual interest on have this common ground. This equality based everyone is considered an equal and appreciated for the their uniqueness, mindset in perspective, that will be a mutual benefit for everyone involved. This is the concept of the seniors on its nothing but fun. It's something that I've started to. At first I really didn't see what the idea what seems like a lot of work. But when you really start to put yourself in motion of cultivating these essentially social relationships but, um, platforms that really allow us to broadcast again service and and, uh, value added for others all of a sudden you begin to realize that the concept of the why is becoming second area sub dominant to the concept of the ah, the process and and the experience itself is being an end goal in results. In yeah, it's a thrilling. It's a thrilling ah concept to think about stuff outside the realm of your own ambitions in your own individual focus, and to nurture and foster much larger creative community or collective of like minded individuals dried out. 19. Epilogue : congratulations. You made it. We made it. And what a journey it's being. This is really designed to be a tool kit of doorways and considerations to open up possibilities. Path head not only in terms of your career opportunities, but also the value that you will have through deeper connection with yourself as an artist and therefore, outwardly into the world with your creativity and your try to remember that no matter how much money, fame or success you may have or aspire to have, nothing will ever bring you the true joy. Doing what you love to do when you're in touch with your highest creative self. And that's really what it's all about. Life is a journey. It's an ongoing discovery. It's not a destination. Take your time to find your unique creative voice. Put in your 10,000 hours and embrace the process. Aspire to transcend itself. Recognize authenticity, will bring quality of connection with others and is truly the best way to spread your message as an artist and develop your creativity. You could never really know this stuff because ultimately to practice. It's a practice of staying in two with the essence of being in touch with their Selves.
