1. Introduction to Photography in Design: humans are naturally drawn to beautiful looking images. It doesn't matter if it's a sunset, an old building food or even another person. We love looking at pictures. And because of that, photography plays a very important role in graphic design. They actually go hand in hand, and images of graphic design principles and photographs go way back in time. Photographs can help express emotions through its color composition. In subject matter, a good photograph can communicate piece, anger or fun. They can make an image stand out, or they can be used as a subtle backdrop to a well designed piece. They can also help with the overall branding an image of a person or company, and sometimes a photograph is the Onley component of a well advertised marketing plan. By understanding the basics of photography and how cameras work, you can leverage this knowledge and learn how to use pictures effectively in your designs. You don't need to necessarily know every single property of photography, but by learning basic fundamentals such as camera settings, lighting in good composition, you will be off to a better start than your next competitors. Photographs can be dated back to the 18th and 19th centuries, where many people were experimenting with capturing an image onto a substrate with a camera obscura. The camera obscura is a naturally forming phenomenon where picture can be projected through a pin hole with light and seen on the other side. As people tried and tested different ways to capture the image, many advancements were made with the way the picture was took, what it was rendered on and how long it would take to capture that image. In a time not too long ago, it would have taken hours to create a selfie that we can take within a couple of seconds today. In the 20th century, more advancements were made, including the use of color and the transition into digital photography. Once images were able to be captured with a digital camera, possibilities became endless as more people had. The ability and resource is to take pictures, which would have cost more time and money in days past. Today, just about everyone with a smart phone has a camera already in their pocket and can take multiple photographs with the click of a button. This has caused major trends to emerge in different industries, such as the food and design industries. With such easy access to cameras, the ability to store them Elektronik, Lee and the software to edit these photos, you too, can use pictures to communicate exactly what it is you want to say in your designs. Next, we will cover the basics of how a camera works so that you will have a more foundational understanding of what makes a good picture. 2. The Basics of Photography: It's probably best to start off with understanding how a camera works so that you can use its settings in properties to your advantage. Cameras gather light into an enclosed box or the camera case and record the image onto a light sensitive medium. A shutter opens and closes to control. How much light enters the camera as it's being recorded. Other functions of the camera lets you control things like how in focus the images, how much light is exposed onto the medium and to even capture video. By adjusting the aperture I s O shutter speed and so on, you can get a variety of different photographs. Exposure in a photograph refers to how light or dark your image looks and can be changed by these settings. The picture on the left shows an under exposed image, while the picture on the right shows an over exposed image. The aperture setting tells the camera how much light can pass through the camera lens and is typically shown in an F stop number. As the F stop number decreases the opening increases allowing in more light. This also correlates to the depth of field of the image, which is how in focus Your main subject point is compared to other subjects Has he s stopped? Number decreases. You get a shower depth of field while a higher F stop gives you a larger depth of field. Adjusting the aperture setting can actually affect the exposure of your photograph. Shutter speed setting controls How long the camera's shutter will remain open or closed. The longer the shutter speed, the more light is allowed to enter the camera. In doing so, this gives a higher exposure as more light is allowed to pass through at a shorter shutter speed, less light is allowed to enter and also gives less exposure. The I S O setting on the camera controls how sensitive the camera is too light. It also helps control exposure as a more sensitive eso will capture more light and a less sensitive eso will capture less light. Keep in mind that a higher I s O number also introduces more noise into the picture. So this is a number you will typically want to keep low. You can get some really different photos by experimenting with e settings and they can help portray what you want to tell the viewer when you use it as a graphic design piece. As you have seen, the major component of getting a good photograph is how much light is entering the camera. Light and photography work together, so it's important that you have a proper lighting when taking or choosing your photos. Lighting a subject in different ways can drastically change the way the image is portrayed . Lighting can also come from a multitude of places, such as the sun, other lights, signs, L. E. D's and more. Something else you will want to take into consideration, especially in graphic design, is a composition of the photograph. Composition basically refers to the framing and spacing of your subject in relationship to the photographs borders. There are a number of different compositional layouts that you can go with, and these will be covered in the next lecture. 3. Composition and Layout: take a look at this image. How does it look to you? Does this image feel balanced or unbalanced, Proportional or disproportionate? Does it look good and make you feel comfortable? Or does it look out of place and make you feel uneasy? The placement of subjects in your photos can actually change the way an image makes a viewer feel. Understanding. Good composition not only helps with better photography, but it is an important factor in graphic design. Choosing a photo that has beautiful composition. Will Onley excel your final artwork? Because you can use graphic design elements with the composition of the photo. There are some basic principles of composition that I would like to cover and can be used in photography, design or both. The first is just a basic single focus image. This is usually made when the subject is placed in the middle of the shot, and there was nothing else really going on. These types of images help portray information easily and quickly as there's nothing else to look at. It can help draw attention and display a message proudly and boldly, even if there is other stuff going on in the background. A single focus image really hones in on the main subject matter by adjusting the subject matter horizontally or vertically in an image, you can change its visual wait every element in a photograph or even a design carries with it visual wait and that weight changes with the mass of the elements or its position. The image on the left has a subject with a lot of visual. Wait. While the subject on the right has less visual wait, this weight can be emphasized by the placement of the subject in the frame, a subject with heavy visual weight pushed to one side of the frame in nothing on the other side can make a photo or design feel unbalanced. Typically, you will want to balance the visual weight by either the mass of another subject or by the placement. Here, a heavy subject is placed closer to the center of the image, while a lighter subject is placed at the end, creating a balance in the image as if you were looking at it on a scale. A good visual weight to maintain happens when you divide the horizontal and vertical axes of the frame into threes, overlaying a great of this pattern shows what is called the rule of thirds the corresponding lines of thirds, and the four intersecting points it creates provide a place to put your subject to create a nice appeal, balancing subjects with visual weight and the rule of thirds. It's commonly used to make a great piece of artwork when choosing the right photo. It is not important just to have good composition, but you must also choose the right subject matter. Typically, this is pretty easy, because the subject matter just reiterates what the design is trying to say. Sometimes there can be a deeper meaning or expression between the photo being used in the design elements. Have fun and experiment with the placement in the subject matter that you choose as having the right photo can make the rest of your design go much easier. 4. Typography and Photography: that since typography is such a big part of good graphic design and relaying a message to the viewer, let's take a moment to talk about how to select the right type for your designs. The first saying that you will want to do it's, of course, to decide what is going to be written. Typically, this is provided by a client or director, or you may have more freedom to say what you would like. It's important to think about the message you want to say, the feel or graining of the peace in the audience. Who is going to see it? A poster for a music festival will look very different than a business card for luxurious client. In both of these designs, a specific audience is targeted, and look is used to express the message that is being conveyed. First, think about the message is a message loud and bold or quiet and soft? Are you trying to get someone's attention, or are you trying to appeal to a calmer crowd? You will also need to think about how much information is going to be given in this message . Typically in design, you really want to choose 12 or three different funds as too many fund choices can really look cluttered. If there's only a sentence or two, then one or two fonts can look nicely with more text and information. You will want to be careful with the fund choices and other attributes like the styling or size. Secondly, you will want to keep in mind the branding or feel that you or the client wants. If the client's company is a law firm than a comic, E fund is going to go against their branding. It pays to do a little research up front to know more about the client that you are doing the work. Four. Finally, you will want to think about the audience who will see the design. This usually goes with the company's branding, as a certain company will attract a similar type of person. But think to yourself who is going to see this? Maybe your design is displayed on a billboard, and so you will need to appeal to a more general audience. Or maybe the design will only be used within the company itself. And so you will want to address those people with that type that you choose. Once you have these established, you will want to take a look at some different fonts that may work. Sometimes I may choose three or four sets of type and try different ones to see what works best in this Designed for a Halloween party. I obviously want a Halloween were scary Tight fund. I will pick a couple and then change out the text with these fonts. Then, by saving them and laying them side by side, you could make a decision or showed the client to see what they prefer with good composition, the right font choice. And by using the other principles of typography, you will have a beautiful looking piece to go along with your photo. 5. Color Theory in Photography: color, of course, is a major part of photography, and so it's important to think about the colors being used for your design piece. Sometimes you will have certain colors. You want to use a mind before you start, and choosing photo is easy. In other times, you may find yourself coming across a photo you didn't expect using by browsing around. And graphic design trial and error can be time consuming. But it's also these times that we do our best work. When you begin designing, you at least want to think of the colors that would go best with what you're trying to say to the audience. If this is a bright and fun design than brighter and more saturated, colors would be best. If it is a more serious tone, then you may want to choose darker or more dull colors. To get your point across. You will want to use the same ideas of choosing the right colors with your photography by using basic color theory principles. If you find royalty free images online, there's a good chance Thes photos have already been edited and are using proper color design fundamentals or even color harmonies. You can choose these photos based on their colors that might match the design or the tight that you are using. Doing this provides a sense of cohesiveness in your design and helps tie everything together. The mine connects the similar colors and bridges. The idea that these to design elements go together. Choosing opposing colors or colors at random can make the design feel disjointed and cause separation from the viewer. Other times, you may want to choose different colors than the elements in your designs. This can help make the design elements stand out, but it's a good idea to at least stick with good color harmonies when you do this. Complementary colors work really well with this, as you can pick two different colors between your type and photograph. But they still work well together by using a basic color principle. One major thing to keep in mind is the contrast between your photograph and the design elements. A good contrast to use is black and white photos. These photos provide a nice late for you to choose design elements around using bold white texts and a black and white photo always works really well, but don't be afraid to use color elements in a black and white photo to as this will help make the design elements stand out and become your focal point. Another trick that you can do to the same effect is to provide a color overlay on the photo itself. This is typically done by using a transparent colored Phil layer over your photo. This technique is great because you can easily cull. Arise the photo, and by adjusting the transparency, you can make type or design elements stand out easier. A recent popular effect to the color overlay is to use a colored Grady in overlay. This is the same process of a filled layer, except use a grading instead by adjusting the transparency. You can still see the photograph, but you also get this really cool, stylized look. You can even adjust the blurriness of a photograph to help provide more contrast. When text or design elements are nice and sharp and the image is slightly blurred, you create a contrast that helps your elements stand out. This effect can also be used with a colored overlay or Grady in tow. Help emphasize the contrast. Have fun with the color in your photos and feel free to play around with different color theories to get the effect you're going for. Once you understand color theory, typography, theory, composition, layout and the other principles of design, you can use these with photos to really create a great looking piece. 6. Where to Find Images: in this video, I would like to show you some places where you can find photos that you can use four year designs. Now one of the best things that you can do is to take the photograph yourself. A lot of people with smartphones already have a camera in their pocket. DSL, ours and different types of cameras have come down in price. And so it's a lot easier to take a photograph thes days digitally and then use that in your design. So if you can start off with just taking your own pictures and using those, because then you don't have to worry about paying for. You don't have to worry about licenses and so forth. Now, if you do need to use a photo online, you will want to follow the proper licenses. Now, if you go to the Creative Commons website, you will see a list of different licenses, and these kind of explain how licenses work in each site that you get a photograph from is going to show it's appropriate license, and you need to follow those rules so you can see we have different ones. Here we have attribution. This is where you're usually given credit to the person that you got. The photo from share alike lets you copy, distribute and modify the work as long as you follow the same terms that that work has, um, non commercial means. Of course, you can't use it for commercial purposes and then no derivatives, which says you let others copy display. Ah, and perform any original copies of your work. If they want to modify, they must get your permission first. So there's different types of licenses, and with each website you will want to look at the different licenses and follow those rules. So one website that I use is called ICE stock. Now this is a royalty free website, and what that means is I don't have to pay. Every time I'm going to use this image, I can buy a license plan, and it will cover me for whatever I need it. For Now, they're different licenses that each image can have. Ah, but however, if you if you have, like, say, royalty music, every time that someone uses that music, they have to pay a new amounts in with royalty free images. You can buy this image and it doesn't matter how many times it's displayed. Ah, you are covered with that license so you can come to, ah site like this and you can see some images. And if you scroll down, they have different subjects and categories. So let's just pick maybe the dogs here, and then you can go over to the picture you want. We'll just pick that dog picture again, and here you can see it has, ah, one credit in this collection. It's $12 for this image or with this particular what's that? You can actually sign up for a subscription, and it gives you credits, and then you can use those credits. Once you pay for that, then you can download that image and use that with your work. Now you also see it shows you the licenses here includes in our standard license and add an extended licence. So if you click on the standard license, it will tell you what is covered in those licenses, and I stock has their own frequently asked questions area where you can go through and check out all the different licenses, so you'll want to make sure that you're reading those some lights and says You can use commercially. Some you can use non commercially. Some you can only view, but you can't modify them. Some of them you can modify them, so you want to make sure that you're checking that out. Now, these sites you can always search for whatever it is you're looking for. So if I put car ah, that will pop up in here and then give me a bunch of different pictures of cars and groups and different things that I can look through. This site has photographs and has vector artwork, so you can get other things like icons and things of that nature. So this is a really good site to peruse around and looked for images for your designs. Another popular site that is like Istock is shutter stock. It works very much the same way you confined licenses. This site has photos, vectors, illustrations, icons. It has videos and music, so there's a lot of things that they've been adding to this site that you can use. They are also royalty free. You will need to pay for them, but once you pay for them, you'll be able to use them in your works. Another place that I find photos is actually through a site called Canvas. Now, kava is a graphic design editing program that I love to use, and they offer actually free photographs and dollar photographs in their library. Now, you can also buy credits on this site and you get a discount. I believe the more that you buy, but you can go to the photo section and here we have, ah, different photographs. What's great about this program is you can do design work in here, and you can drag the photos directly over some of these photos you will actually see on other sites like I'm showing you. However, they're easily findable in this database here. And when I find one, say this one is for free. I could just bring it on over and drop it in and do my editing here. And if I want to use one that costs money, I just grab it and I drop it in and you'll see this little Brandon going on. Once I go ahead and publish or download that image, it'll charge my account and then it'll get rid of that branding and I can use it. So this is a really cool program and itself, and it has a great photo library that you can pull photos from and search and so forth, the next couple of sites I'm going to show you or where you can actually find free royalty free images. Now these are images that you can use and you typically don't have to give any attribution . Sometimes you do again with all sites you want to make sure you're checking. Ah, but I use a lot of images from these sites because you will find some really great looking ones. You'll see some editor's picks as you scroll down and you can see those different images. You might actually see images that I've used before from this site so I can click on one or I can search for one. And then here you can download it, and you also see that has a CCO Creative Commons license, and it says free four commercial use no attribution required. That basically means that we can use this photo. We can use it commercially, and we don't have to give credit to who the photograph is from. So it's a great way to come in and use some free images and you'll find some pretty good ones in here again. I would look over the licence, click on this link and read through it and make sure you understand it for whatever need that you're gonna use it for. So that is picks. Obey is this website and then we have pecs ALS, and this is very similar to pick Sabei. Sometimes you'll find different images. Sometimes you'll find the same images. I find that all these different platforms, their search algorithms, are different. So when I type, you know, forced and one search engine and my pull up a bunch of illustrations and icons and photographs where I type it into another site and it gives me a lot of photographs and different things. So sometimes you'll see that even though some of the photos are the same, I go and use all of these sites, depending on what I'm looking for or how I'm searching for. But this site has some really great photos. As you scroll down, you can see there's some really beautiful ones in here, and they have footage also that you can use and again just check the licenses. I can't stress that enough. So another one is unspool Ash, These air also royalty free images. And I find this to be a great site. They actually have a lot of high quality images, and it looks like they've been edited or someone has taken the time to really make sure that they had some really good photos that they put on this site and they feature. So I really like using this one. And what's also wild about this site is that it has a lot of vertical images. So you can see these long images here. It actually shows a lot of those up front. So if I'm looking for something that is in that long space, I will actually come to the site first to see if I can find something for use, because I know that it's got these nice vertical images. The next site where you can find free images is the wicked media common sight. Now this is a great site because these are free royalty free images that you can use. And typically what has happened is is that their licenses have expired beyond the date of, you know, whenever they were created, and you'll find a lot of really cool old photos here that you can use. So we're gonna type in, Let's put in New York City, and then we can go over and click on historic photos and you'll see it's got these really cool old photos that you can actually use for free and you don't usually have to give attribution. You'll want to check to make sure, but you'll find some really cool old photos that you can use from the Wikimedia Commons site. You can click on more details, and this is where we'll tell you more information, and you also find out information on the license and how you can use it. So that's the wicked media comments website. So hopefully that gives you a brief overview of some great places where you can find some images to use in your designs. If you are unsure or you forget any of these links, typically you can go to Google and just type in royalty free images and those Are they going to be the kind of images that you won't have to pay royalties to, and you can use them in your work typically you can modify, and especially if you're paying for them. Ah, you're usually getting a license that will let you use them and modify them. When you use free images, you'll really want to check the licenses because you might have to do an attribution to the person who took it or you might not be able to modify it and so forth. So just make sure you're checking those licenses and then start finding some good photographs that you can use with your designs. 7. How to Cut Out a Subject from a Photo: one of the most common things you'll do and design and with photography, is usually cutting out an object from a background. This is pretty popular because you want to separate the background to have a different background, or you wanna edit the main subject a little differently than the background. Now there's a couple different ways that you can do it. You can use some online software, or you can use some software that you will pay for now, there's a lot of different sites that do this. If you go into Google and you type something like remove background from image, you'll get all kinds of different software that you can try out and see how they work for you. I'm going to show you a couple real fast just so you can see the different ways about going about this. Some of the free software isn't going to work as good as some more high end software. You want to keep that in mind, but if the image is pretty simple to remove from the background, then it won't be a problem. Now when I say symbol, I mean things that are general shapes are easier than things like, say, hair or grass that has a, ah lot of different detail into it hairs, one of the more harder thanks to remove from a background. And typically you need a good editing software like Adobe Photo Shop for that. But if you're just trying to remove, say, a coffee mug from a background, then something like that is typically pretty easy. The other thing you'll want to keep in mind is the difference in contrast between the foreground and the background. So if you have a background with a lot of detail going on already, it's going to be harder to remove the foreground image. Typically, if you want to do this, it's best if you use like a solid color for your background. This is where you see people use things like green screens or blue screens, or even if you have your object on a desk that's all white or all black. That's a little easier to remove the background than if you were toe have it out in the open, where you see trees and grass and houses and all kinds of different things that make it a little harder to remove. So let's Go ahead, take a look at this. I'm going to go ahead and open up my image here. I just have this picture of the boy here, and I'm using a software called Luna Pic. Now, Luna pickets free online, and it works like Adobe Photo Shop. It's a free graphics software, but I'm on the Internet right now. This isn't software that I've downloaded, so you can do this right away, and you can do this for free also. Now, this is going to be a little more time consuming because you have to actually manually a race out the background. Now there is a background removal feature in the software, but I personally have never been able to get it toe work right With an image like this, this is a medium ish image on difficulty. There is hair, so it's not going to get all of these little hair particles. The background is a little difficult to see, but there's enough contrast where the program can pick it up. But the removal background for this software, I haven't I haven't really seen it act as good as I would like for to do so what I do is. I picked the eraser tool in the top left hand corner and it's gonna change the screen. And we have our different brush sizes and types and just picked the biggest one, the big square here, and basically you just start erasing. Now, when you race, you see this checkerboard pattern, which is the pretty standard pattern of a transparent background. That just means that there's nothing there. So once you races out and you stick this image on a different background, you will see the background through wherever you erase. Now, again, this is going to take a lot of time with a bigger image like this, and I'm gonna have a hard time getting some of these details now. I can zoom in with a software, and I can pick a smaller brush and do some more fine detail. But even my largest brush isn't as big as I would like for it to be, so you can do it with the software, smaller images and easier things to delete. You might be able to do that, but if you have no choice whatsoever, you don't have any money to spend on any other software, and you just absolutely have to get rid of the background. This would be the way to do it is just to come in here and manually delete out the background. Then when you start getting around this subject, you're really gonna have to take some time. Of course, I'm going fast, but you would want to zoom in and make sure that you are removing that subject appropriately with this software. So I'm not going to go through the whole process. But you can see that's how you would do it with a software like this. Then they make these other programs. These are also online, and this is a free one. I had I had to set up an account, but the account was free and allows me to do the same thing. So but it's a lot easier because it has an automatic background detection. This one's called background burner, and there's a lot of these, but basically I choose my file. I can select the image, and then it's going to process that image. So once it's done doing that, it's going to go ahead and start showing some different variations of the program. And if you look at the burn preview. On the right hand side, you can see it did a really good job getting rid of this background. However, there's this some of these objects in the back that we want to get rid of. Well, we can go ahead and edit that. So we'll go to the 1st 1 and will hit touch up. And then it's going to bring up this editor where I can basically remove the pieces I don't want. You can see the yellow line going around. The subject is what's being cut out. But you can see that yellow line is going over. Whatever. This is a shorter backpack, and we don't actually want that in here. So we want to have the negative button selected the red button, and we're just going to draw over the pieces we don't want. And the more fine tune you do this, the better it will become. And we just want to come in here and erase out that piece and you'll see it update over on the right hand side. If I mess up, I can get the green button and kind of drawback in some of his clothing. If I accidentally deleted too much. We can adjust that looks like it. Erase him stuff here that we want to keep because it got real dark. Make sure all that is also in there and we want to delete this piece. So let's go back to that negative button and we'll just draw over that and it looks like I cut too much, and then we'll want check around the headline. These little hair particles were probably not going to be able to pick up with a piece of software like this, but we could definitely get in there and find Tune this more. But this is pretty good. It really cut this image out. Like I said, hairs kind of hard for this type of thing. But if you were doing something simple, a book or you know something that's a basic object, it would really cut this out nice and easily. You can it a transparent checkerboard background on the right hand side, and you can see what that background would look like. Um, and this this looks really good. So then we can hit the finish button, and then when we hover over the image, weaken down with this as a J P G file, or P and G foul. Now, this is very important because J. P. G files are going to give you a white background. They don't hold transparent information, so you will want to choose the PNG, So download PNG and then it will go ahead and download that image for us in the software. So we'll go ahead and open this up inside a photo shop so you can see that it transferred that background correctly. Now, I'm just using Photoshopped to show you what has happened because it's a little easier to see here. Of course, if you don't have photo shop, you won't be able to come in. But basically, if you had your editing software photo shop, if you're using can va pic monkey or any other program, you could drop this imaging and then whatever has this checkerboard pattern in the background? You could change that to whatever you want it to be. So I'm just going to go ahead and add a new layer and photo shop here, and we're just gonna fill this with the color so that you can see what's happening here so we'll go to color, and that's a good color. We'll just leave that nice teal color there, and that fills it in for So of course, you can imagine this could be anything in the background. It could be a sunset. It could be, You know, ah, design elements that could be a transparent background, fade to background, ingredient, whatever have you there. But basically, that is how you're cutting out the image with that program. I'm gonna go ahead and close this out, and we're not gonna save it. And we're in photo shop now already. So let me show you how to do this in photo shop. So we have our our normal picture here that we want to cut out. And the best way to do this is go to the top, go to select and go to select and mask. And when you do that, it's going to kind of fade this little image out force. Let's change the view, and we can change the view to marching ants and overlay on black on white or whatever we have here. So let's just do our in black and then what we'd want to do is with our brush We just want to start painting on this image. Now, if you missed anything, you can hold down the Ault button or the option button on Mac, and you can erase any parts that you didn't want. So this works a lot better, and it picks up all those little hair follicles, and you can actually get a lot more fine tune with its. You have all these settings on the side. You can adjust, um, your radius and you're smoothing your feathering. Your contrast. You can shift the edge you'll have to write. I spend a lot more time adjusting these, but this tool is a lot more accurate. And if we bump up our A pass ity here, you can see what has been cut out. Now that we're on black, you can see this image. And, for instance, if I wanted to add this back in, I just hold Ault in color this piece back in and that would come in for me. I might want to hit a piece of this hair at the top just to kind of see if I could clean that up a little bit more or I could leave it. But you can see the detail is a lot more Finder and Photoshopped because the tools are built a lot better for this type of thing. We can also change our view and weaken due to a layer view, so we can also see that transparent background. And then once we have what we want, we just hit OK to save that. And then now we have that transparent background and we can do the same thing with this image. Let's go ahead and add in the layer and we'll fill this in well hit, okay, and you move that layer behind it. And there we have our image. So that is probably the easiest way to do it is with photo shop and you can see that it's not perfect. I would go in and I would find Tune my brush strokes, and I would mess around with those settings. But this is ah paid product, so you're gonna have to have the money to spend to do this. The other ways I showed you were the free options for creating those photos, so hopefully that gives you a brief rundown of a different couple ways that you could actually do this yourself if you would like to. And hopefully that gives you some ways that you could actually cut out images for your photo also. 8. Create an Advertisement in Canva: in this video, I'm going to show you how to create an advertisement and a program called Can Va Now this is a design program that I really like a lot because it has a lot of really cool features, including it's easy to post to social media. It already has a lot of design elements and photographs in the software, and it gives you a lot of flexibility, and you can sign up for a free account. If you go to www dot camera dot com and when you sign in, you will be brought to the dashboard here. Now I am using Canada 2.0, which is the newest version of camera. You may be using the 1.0 version so it might look a little different, but it's pretty similar, and the processes are going to be the same. You also notice I've blurred out a couple things on here just for confidentiality reasons. But the process for designing is going to be the same. So let's go ahead and take a look at that now. In Canada, you have all of these different templates that you can use, such as a social media template presentation, template, poster template and so forth. Now we're going to create an image that is 500 pixels by 500 pixels. It's a nice square image. It works on most of the social media platforms very well, and it fits the screen and so forth. Now you could pick the social media template here, and it'll give you a bunch of great templates to choose from. This is at 800 by 800 pixels, but I'm going to make it from scratch just so you can see how that is done. And if you're using another software, you can essentially do the same thing, and you can see how that is created. So it doesn't matter of you using canvas or not. But that's what we're going to make it in this software today, So we're going to click on custom dimensions and we're gonna type in our own dimensions. We're just going to do 500 by 500. Make sure it's set to pixels that you can use any one of these other measurements if you want and then hit create design. When you do, you will be brought to the editor. Now you can see that there are actually some templates on the left hand side and we can pick one of these so I can just select this template here and then when I do, it pops up and I can click in here and start changing out any of the information to whatever we want. However, we're not going to do that. So I'm just going to undo that real quick, and we're going to make this template from nothing. Now, typically, I'll have something that I want to say first, if I know what's going to be in this advertisement, and I know what the text days, I usually put that first. You can start with an image. Either way, let's go ahead and put in our text. So I'm going to click the T button, and I can select any one of these texts here that I want to. I can also hit the letter tea on my keyboard, and it will drop text directly into the editor for me, and I can write in what I want to say here. So maybe we're doing a flash sale, and we want to just call this flash sale now I'm going to click out to get rid of that, and then I'm going to grab that and just move it up a little bit, so that's out of the way. And then I'm going to hit T again to drop into more text. So maybe that's the dates for our sale that we're having here. So now what we want to do is maybe we want to put some elements in here, and we're going to choose a photograph. So go over to the Elements section of Canada and look for the free photo section. Now this might look a little different if you're using canvas a one, but you'll find some free photos that you can use so we can click on those. And then we can select one of these photos. Let's just imagine that maybe I'm doing some music courses that I do, and I want to create an advertisement for that so I can come up here and I can also type in music and it'll filter through and try to find those for me. Then I'll go over to the photos with music selected, and here's a bunch of different photos that I can use now you'll see some or dollar, and some are for free. And I can just go through and try to pick out one that might work well. So I'll go ahead and let's just choose. Ah, Miss Auditorium. Now, if I go over into the box, you'll see that it makes it the background, and that might be what we want to do. Or if I hover. So you see it like this and I drop it, then I can resize and move this around wherever I want. I'm going to go ahead and delete that real quick. Something else that you can do is you can go over to the elements. Let's get rid of music and go to all and you'll see these grids. And if you click on a grid, it will make this elements right here, which you can drop photos and also so if I grab this photo and drop it in, it will do the same thing as making a background. Now came a two point no does this automatically for us, but if you're using 1.0, you might need to drop a grid in if you want it to be your background I'm just going to go ahead and do that quick. So let's go back to photos and we'll find our photograph again here. And let's say that we're going to drop it in now. This photograph is might be something that I want to use. However, there is a lot going on in this photograph, and so you'll want to think about the composition and different things of the photograph for what you're trying to say. I want text in the middle here, and there's some tricks that we can do, such as using a Grady in overlay or maybe de saturating or changing the colors of this photograph. But with all these different things, it's gonna be really hard for this text a seat. Now, If I was doing an advertisement for a musical concert, then I would probably want to use this photo. But if I don't, if I can kind of pick whatever I wanted, it doesn't matter that I want to come in and start dropping in different images just to see how they look. And one thing I look forwards, maybe some negative space. If there's parts of the image that doesn't have anything that would be a great place for text, and I want the text in the middle. So I'm kind of looking at the center here to see what's going on, and this is using a lot, too. So we could do maybe a concert and depending on what this advertisement as four as also going to be what you want to use the photo. For now, this is a pretty good one. You can see the text easily here, and it's nice and legible because there's some white space and it just really stands out versus that first photograph where there was a lot going on. So I'm going to go up and find one that I've used before that I like, and that is this image right here. I just kind of like this image. I just like the way that everything is leading off to the side and kind of draws you in toward the center. However, there's a lot going on here, and it's hard to see. So let's go ahead and change the way the background looks so that we can see it a little easier now. If we click on the image, we have some filter options. If we click those, it gives us different filters, and you can see just by using some of these, you can make that text stand out a little better. And this is a great way to come in and go through these filters. Maybe that's a good one that you could use. You could put the text in the top left or at some other elements. You could do a black and white photo, and you have all of these different ones. I'm going to click on none. And instead of using a filter, we can also adjust the image. So if I click on that, it gets us the options of brightness, contrast, saturation, tenting it, blurring it and the X process. Now, if I blur an image, you will automatically see the text because of the contrast between the blurred background and the sharp texts. But I don't want a blur this image. I want to keep it so we can see what's going on here. One thing you can changes the X process, and it changes kind of the colors, which is really cool. It gives you a cooler color or a warmer color. We're going to go a little cooler on this and maybe we'll tend it just to be a little more blue. And just by doing that, you can see that text starting to pop out. Also, we're gonna end up making this maybe a little darker in a little less contrast it. And as I fade that contrast out, you can see the contrast in between the text also. So all of these different things that I'm doing is making that text stand out a little legible. However, I don't like the black because the black is really kind of hard to see. But since we have a lot of dark colors, we can pick white text. So if you have a light background, you'll want to pick darker colors. And if you have a darker background pick, lighter colors and typically black and white is great for text. So we'll just stick with white and now we can see that a little better. We can click on our image and we can adjust that a little more so that we can see that text a little better. Okay, now that's starting to look pretty good. Now the text doesn't look all that great. It's standing out against the background, which is what we want. This is nice and legible, but this Texas flattened. It's kind of boring. So let's pick some type that we could use toe look a little better than this. Now there's some fonts that you will want to just. You'll probably start liking 45 different funds that you use all the time, just by going through them and liking their style and how they look. You can also look at trending fonts and impair those up also. But I'm just going to go ahead and pick some that I like. One of these is called Arvo, and it has this really cool kind of look to it with the way that it's, um, got the Sarah's off the ends of these letters. We want to make this a little bigger. It's a little too small, so let's go ahead and change that size here. Now it dropped down, so let's move the scaling with these little white boxes off to the side, and this is starting to look better. However, you can see the L and A or kind of touching right here, and we don't want that. So if I click in here and I go to spacing, I can actually change the letter spacing to be more spaced out or closer together. We want to give it a little breathing room. So we're just going to space thes out some. And then now what we want to do is let's go ahead and change this bottom text. Also, we could use Arvo to match the text, or we can pick a different text if we want to, just to make it stand out so we'll do another one that I like called glacial indifference. Here we go, and it has a different look than the Arvo does. However, this looks a little weird, so let's go ahead and give this some spacing just to give it some breathing room. So it's all not clumped up together, and maybe let's make this one size bigger. We want to be smaller than a remain our main type here, but we also want to make sure it's nice and legible, and then we can kind of mess around. Let's go ahead and Spacey's out, and sometimes I like to have ah it, since this is ah, double digit number of like to have this a double digit. I think it looks a little more even that way than just having those single digits. Some people might like the single digits that looks kind of cool to, but I'll do the double digits and then you can tell this is from October fourth to October the seventh. And then you might want to play around with the letter spacing a little more. See, this is a little too tight and just looks to scrunched up. So we just move it out a little bit so that they have some space and this looks good. Now what we want to do is center these two up, so I'm going to click on both of the text, and then I can move them around and you'll start seeing these purple lines pop up, and we just want to get everything kind of centered and then dragged them. Let's drag them individually and make sure that they are centered. Okay, now we just want to split the difference between these actually want the flash sale to be above the center line so that your eyes see it a little easier. So I'll find the center point and then no, actually move it up a little bit and I'll leave this text right below the center point. Maybe come off a little bit, move that down and you'll just kind of want to use good graphic design theories of spacing and good composition and typography. Now the 10 4 through 10 7 is a little hard to see with the background, but not enough to where you can't see it at all. You could also put this text down here in the bottom, or you could do some design where there's some nice negative space. However, I like these kind of advertisements front and center, so that it just draws the eye directly to the center of the image right away. Make sure I got that centered, and we can maybe add some little design elements to this. Let's go over to the elements. It's exit out of that and click on all so we can see all of our different design elements, and you can see in Campbell. We got all kinds of cool things. We have icons and illustrations, and some of them are free, and some of them are you pay for, Ah, lot of them. You can change the color on them. Some of them you can't. There's charts and graphs and all kinds of different things that you can use. Let's just drop in some lines. Typically, we can create some lines off to the side of this bottom copy, and it looks kind of cool. So we're going to click on the line here, and we're going to scale that in. And then we're gonna move it down here so you'll see that purple line pop up and get in line with that text, and then let's go ahead and we're just gonna control or command C and control or command V to copy that. We're gonna move that over here, and we want to make sure that they have the same spacing. So I'm looking at these guidelines. I'm centering up to the text here, and then it's There's a snap here, and then a snap right here works lining up the edge of the typography bounding box. And I won't do that on both sides. So I know that have even spacing across now I might actually scale these in just a little bit just make sure this is nice and center, and then that looks pretty good. So that is a quick, easy advertisement that you can create and Camba, and you have all kinds of different options of changing the filters, the adjustment, the text, the layers. This might you might want to change out or have different words here, so you'll need a mess around with the spacing. If we don't like this picture, we can easily change out this picture so we can go to our photographs. And maybe we want to use this for another flash sale and weaken drag one these free photographs over and what's really cool is when I do it in camera, it automatically drops it into the background and applies the filter that was already applied before. So if I let go of that, this already looks good, because we've already adjusted the adjustments and filters to make sure that we can read the text. So this is always going toe work. But if we don't like the blue or something about this, we can still come in, go to the adjustment properties and change that. Maybe we want a warmer color. Since we got this nice hot, um, firework going on. And maybe we need to adjust some of the other things in here to see the text a little easier. But Campbell makes it very easy and quickly to come in here and pick either the free photographs or paid photographs and easily design right away. And then you can save these out. Whenever you're ready to say this image out, just go up to publish, click on the drop down box and go to download and then select how you want to download it. If you use free images, then you can just go ahead and download it. If you used any paid images, you'll have to put in a credit card or something to make it payments, and then you'll be charged, and then you can download it from there. So enjoy. Have fun with that came as a great program, especially with all of its free photographs inside of the program, and just gives you a lot of flexibility that way to come in here and start designing immediately without having to find your own photographs on another website or taking your own pictures
