1. Welcome: Human Beings are Goal Seeking Creatures: setting actionable well thought out plans the type of plans that lead you in the direction of your dreams that lead you in the direction of your hopes and your aspirations. That is at the very core of what it means to be human human beings. We are gold seeking creatures. Our very nature is to dream big and then to build and create and actualize. Making progress towards your goals provides life with meaning and motivation. I want to stress that the reason we're focusing on the goal aspect up front is because as a coach, you want to be in the absolute best possible position to be able to, to speak to and to use language and examples that resonate with different personality types and different people. You're going to want to be able to to get at similar issues or similar challenges and do it from from many different angles. And also each client will, even if they don't start out wanting to identify goals, even if that's not their objective. Each client will eventually benefit from thinking about and planning for what it is that they want to achieve in the future. Goal setting is powerful it allows you to take control of your actions that allows you to take control of your mind and of your life In general. Gold progress enables you to recognize your effectiveness in this world and to start to believe in yourself at the at the very core, living without goals, it can feel like living like a feather in the wind without direction. On the other hand, well thought out goals well thought out Plans helped to anchor you to what's most important in life. Once you begun the set your goals and make progress towards those goals, a sort of psychological snowball effect takes place the attainment of milestones during the goal achievement process. It triggers areas of the brain that are responsible for motivation. Thus they propel you further down that path of goal. Achievement in this section will explore several CBT goal setting strategies that are designed to align goals in a way that action towards those goals is more easily taken 2. Ikigai: Skillshare Original Content : when I was learning the CBT practices for the first time. I think that one of the things that surprised me most, especially as a young life coach, was just how goal oriented these therapeutic practices are. And that being said, I'd be surprised if at least one of your 1st 3 where maybe one of your 1st 5 clients doesn't come to you wanting your guidance regarding their future regarding their work, future their employment. And I'd be surprised simply because for most people, working career is an important part of identity worker, at least the right work, anyway. It provides meaning in it's rewarding and satisfying and uplifting. We spend so much time doing our work that it can pay off literally big league to get it right. This cognitive technique uses an integrated process for creating harmony in regards to the path that you choose after asking one of the ultimate questions in life, something that we all ask at one point. And that question is, what should I do with myself in the future? The area that's colored in red, This is the spot referred to as harmony, and when you're reflecting on which path you'd like to go down in the future. The ultimate objective is to jump on a path is to get on a path that guide you right into the intersection of harmony right here. This goal in clarity seeking exercise. It has a few different names. One of the names is the intersection exercise, but more often than not, because it is rooted in Japanese philosophy. This exercise is referred to by its Japanese name, which is like a guy, depending on how self reflective you are as an individual or how self reflective your client is when you're working with them. This exercise contain aches anywhere from a simple 10 or 15 minutes, all the way to a few solid hours or 1/2 day. When I did the exercise for the first time myself, I did every last bit of my self reflection during a 30 or 45 minutes shower, and as soon as I was done showering, I grabbed the pen and I wrote my ideas down in a journal so that they did not lose my my valuable train of thought. This exercise is going to help you to get around it, and not only what is important to you, but also what's feasible. Here's how to use like a guy. Ah, client comes to you and they're attempting to determine what it is that lies ahead for them in the future. Now, of course, as their coach, you'll want to help them discover and uncover and reveal their passion. Of course you do. You also want to expand their thinking and their rationale beyond just the subject of passion. Because for most people living in the real world, passion is not going to be the Onley consideration when it comes to career in order to get closer to a satisfying and a sustainable and a harmonious future, there are four intersections that should come together, four intersections that should meet. So we will, of course, because it isn't extremely important. We're going to start with passion. Whatever you choose to dio, whatever your client chooses to dio, having passionate in that area will certainly help you see, without this inner fire this inner desire to take on the challenge. You may start out with a ton of momentum, but that Momenta, um, will no doubt soon fade. The second intersection is that you have to believe that you currently are, or that you could be with some training that you could be with some experience in some practice. You could be really, really good at doing your chosen work. Now really good is, of course, a very subjective term. But the point is this. In the absence of belief in yourself, it's going to be much more challenging to get to and to stay at the top of your career at the top of your game. So let's pause and let's bring this exercise from being a theoretical walk through with an imaginary client to a more practical example, Let's use us. Let's use you and I as coaches. So as a coaching student, you already know that you have a desire to help other people. You have a passion, a fire to give back and to either enter the coaching profession for the very first time were to expand your current skill sets and to add to what you already know. So we get it. We we recognize that passion is already covered. Now we move to the next pillar, and you want to be honest in regards to your commitment to excellence within this coaching field, can you, with some training and with some experience, can you be really, really, really good at this? Can you be really good at helping other people? Can you be really good at making a difference in the life of someone else? You see, this is important to us as coaches, because as a life coach or if you're an independent therapy practitioner, it will be much more challenging to get clients to keep clients to stand out above other competitive coaches. It would be much more challenging to get through those those days of setback the days when your emotions are literally screaming at you to cave in and to go find something else to dio. So by believing that you could be really super effective within this field, that belief is going to carry over, and it's going to translate into perseverance and into commitment in the third intersection . You want to make sure that the path that you're considering the path that you choose is providing something that is needed by somebody else. Does the world need this back to us? So the coaching industry is estimated at a $1.5 billion industry in the United States alone , and that doesn't count the rest of the world. It's a big world. People spend money on coaching because they need coaching. People spend money on coaching because it its value to their life. People don't spend money on coaching because it's fun to part with their money. So from the coaching standpoint, this intersection is also covered. Now the final and really equally important intersection is choosing something that is financially feasible. It needs to pay the bills again. You might absolutely be passionate about something. You might love it. You might even be really good and skill that it, however, passion and skill don't always equal the rent being paid. So in relation to this intersection for us, we know that because coaching is on the rise and more and more people are hiring coaches each and every single year, we know that the potential to make money is with it is within this field. And with just a little bit of digging around and asking some questions, you'll find that some coaches earn a very substantial amount of money, and I think you'll find that if you haven't already looked into this that the financial potential within this field it can be staggering. So again for us anyway, the financial intersection This is also covered. So when we add all four of these intersections up, we end up right in the red, Right In harmony. I could Guy is a process toe work through when your client is in the state of seeking. 3. Kaizen: A Really Good, Regular Day . . .: in most cases, the overall context, the overall circumstances of our lives. It doesn't change that dramatically from day to day. We like to think it will. We like to fantasize about these big dramatic changes. However, with some retrospection, it really becomes obvious that most sustainable changes in life anyway those type of changes, the changes that we want. They take some time now. At one point in my life Coach training journey, I attended a course that was titled Something like the Human Side of Process Improvement, Where the People Side of Process Improvement. And this was years back when it seemed like every single organization was driving hard towards six Sigma Black belt Process improvement training. That's training. That's all about how to improve processes in systems typically in manufacturing. And the reason that I took the course at that point of my journey is because at that point of history, when all of these organizations were taking on this training, it seemed to me, anyway that most of these organizations they were forgetting about the you and I factor the people factor, how it is that people, how individuals impact six systems and processes. So anyway, during that program. That's where I learned the word kaizen as it can apply to personal goal setting. Ties in, in its essence, refers to identifying the small steps that, when taking consistently over time, lead to dynamic lasting change to dynamic lasting growth. Focusing on the small, incremental shifts, the shifts in behavior in attitude or thinking. Doing that systematically repeated, produces riel and sustainable results. So let's pause again in this video because I recognize that it may seem anyway, like there's this dichotomy between these small, incremental goal setting steps and the process of visioning, the process of big picture goals and ideal self statements, the ideal self statement and the visioning of big picture dreams, which I can't recall if we talked about already in this program or if that's coming up in a future video. But either way, those those processes are for enhancing self awareness regarding what's possible in your life. Those air strategies for crystallizing possibility. You see creating an image of your ideal self living your ideal life with your ideal thing, surrounded by all of your ideal people, having the ideal experiences creating that image and then spending time focusing on that image that acts like a magnet that draws your attention to what's promising to your potential and from my experience, my own personal experience, I can honestly say, even based solely on my own first vision board that hung where my 23 year old eyes could see it every single day. I can honestly say that visioning creating this clear, detailed picture of your ideal future self holding that picture with in your mind's eye and allowing that picture to seep into your subconscious. Doing that as an exercise is beyond valuable. It really is necessary. Beak eyes in small step identification technique does not at all contradict this. Instead, Kai's in the small step identification technique is all about pinpointing and honing in on the seemingly small steps that over time, bring about, bring about and bring forth this ideal self. So let me give you an example. I were a Fitbit watch, and I wear this just so I can keep myself focused on my physical help. If you're familiar with Fitbit watches, they allow you and they allow me to track my calories to track my physical exercise. And if I wanted to lose £7 which I did recently, so I'll change that to win. I wanted to lose £7. I was able to use this watch as a tool for losing weight in incremental kaizen steps. About 3500 calories is equal to £1. The body blubber £1 of body fat so I could have gone big. I could have tried to lose a pound a day and reach my goal in one short week. Theoretically, I could have done this by shedding 3500 calories more than I usually do in my daily work out. And then, of course, not eating anything extra during those days. I may be a little bit bizarre, but I'm not crazy. I know me. I'd be literally starving, frustrated. I'd be absolutely miserable. So I took a better choice. I went with the kaizen approach instead, I went with losing Onley £1 the week, and I identified that I could reach this goal by decreasing my caloric intake by 500 calories a day and then also keeping my activity level really just about the same because I'm already fairly active. So instead of this wow one week change, where I lost all of this weight in a really quick period of time, However, it would have been an unhealthy way to do it. I went with this slower, healthier seven week plan. Now the results again may not have seemed that dramatic because they did not happen overnight. But really, that's OK, because the results are much more sustainable and much more lasting. Let's make this really actionable for you to begin using the skies in small step identification process. Think about what a really good regular day looks like. A really good regular day. Nothing fancy here. No new mansion on the mountaintop. No sweep me off of my feet romance. Just a really good regular day. Because, remember, the biggest changes in life are often the changes that Bruin that bubble up with consistency in time. Ask yourself the following questions. What seemingly average thing can I begin doing right now? Can I begin doing today? That may be the catalyst for me achieving my long term goals. Also, ask what single habit can I begin right now again? Nothing out of the ordinary, just one single simple habit that may begin to impact my life in ways that I can't now conceive For some of you, that seemingly average thing may be a commitment to journal about your thoughts for five minutes each evening. For other people, it may be to limit your Facebook or your instagram to only one or two hours per week instead of one or two hours per day. Other people will benefit from the habit of making their bed every single morning. We're going out for an afternoon walk around the block. So whether it is writing down your thoughts listening to an inspirational podcast, we're going out for some exercise. The point is to identify a small keystone habit that can lead to dynamic and big results in the future. Well, I hope that the kaizen small step identification process really is as helpful to you as it has been to myself in my clients. 4. Ideal Self: Skillshare Original Content : as you get to know the personality of your client, they will no doubt come a time when you want to spend some coaching sessions helping them to think about helping them to design and to actually write their own ideal self statement . Although the practice of designing an ideal self statement, it does have some similarities to goal setting. Creating an ideal self document is really more of an exercise in expanding self awareness and then noticing what's possible in life. Just the act of spending structured time and hard thought hard thought about what's possible to achieve in your present day and in your future. Just that single act alone expands awareness and most people most clients find it rejuvenating. Find it energizing. Find it liberating when designing your best possible self document. There are, of course, a few things that you want to consider. First, you want to remain open to the entire experience when doing this type of work, especially for the very first time. It's common to experience both positive and negative emotions, and I mentioned this. I mentioned it on Lee because it's really important to be prepared as a life coach. Let me illustrate to you why I say this. In a recent coaching session, I personally worked with a woman named Margaret who did experience some negative emotion as we began the technique. Now her negative emotion was a result of feelings of regret that came up during reflection . She even said to me at one point, something to the extent of you know, Patrick, I really feel, is though I should have done much more with my life. Up into this point, I feel like I missed out on a lot. Fortunately, Margaret, she was able to work through these uncomfortable emotions and really excelled in this technique and then this exercise. So just be aware. Just be aware that while working through this, either alone or while working with a client, yes, you want to acknowledge you want to give voice to those negative feelings those negative emotions, however, you wanna quickly redirect back to the essence of the exercise, which is forward looking and positive. The other thing to consider is that you will get the best possible results by doing this exercise. In a creative state, a creative state of mind is strongly correlated to openness into risk taking while creating your best possible self statement. You don't want to play it safe. You want to reach outward. You want to reach to the edge of the tree branch where, where all the good fruit is, where the ripe fruit is, you want to reach toward the things that you don't currently have, and this means that you want to stretch your emotional comfort zone once the ideal self statement or the ideal self document is created. You want to allow that document in that statement to really inspire you in to inform you. And the inspiration will come by etching into your mind in exact detail a mental picture of the best possible self that you imagined during that exercise. And once you have that etched into your mind, spending time visualizing this best possible version of you often in addition to describing in written words, your best possible self. It's also very helpful to create a vision board that the picks this ideal version of you. The Vision Board can be comprised of hand drawn images. It could be comprised of images clipped from magazine articles. It could be favorite quotes, pictures of places that you want to visit really anything, anything at all that illustrates what it is that you wish to achieve and who it is that you desire to become. And this can include your core values, your strengths, any principles that you live by. Attached to this lecture is an example of a completed, best possible self statement. There's also a blank document that will help you get started in the creation of this personalized statement. 5. Sentence Stems: Skillshare Original Content : the sentence stem technique was developed by Dr Nathaniel Brandon. This is a very powerful technique for gaining insight and self awareness. It's also extremely helpful for achieving your goals to be considered a valid life coaching exercise, one that gets add it into a coach training course. The exercise has to meet some criteria has to be practical. It has to be supportive as well as focused on the entire person, the whole person. One of the most dynamic aspects of the sentence stem technique is that it Presupposes that you that you already possess within yourself the answer to most of your challenges. I'd encourage you to use the exercise right away and then revisit the exercise at regular intervals. A sentence stem is a partially completed sentence, a sentence that includes your desired outcome. But it leaves blank the method for achieving that outcome. Here are a few examples of sentence stems I'd feel more at ease in social settings if I I'd be 10% more productive if I feeling happier today than I was last week would require me to , as you're probably taking notice. Sentence stems are very simple. However, they often times lead straight to tremendous, actionable insight. Here's how the exercises, typically assigned every day for the next seven days, work through the sentence stems that accompany this lecture. Set aside no more than than five minutes where you can relax each day. Find a spot where you're not going to be disturbed and without making any judgments about your thoughts or your responses. Right. 5 to 7 responses to each of those sentence stems. In order to allow your subconscious mind to bypass your conscious critical thinking while you're jotting down your responses aimed to write as quickly as possible, jot down the first thoughts that come to your mind again without judgment as to the content of those thoughts. In addition, while you are writing, don't look at what it is that you wrote the day before because you don't want to influence the outcome of today's ideas at the end of the seven days. That's when you'll review all of your responses. And as you're reviewing those responses, look to identify any common patterns in your writing. Responses that are repeated over and again are typically great areas to focus on. Of course, I'm only able to provide you with some generic examples. There is, however, an attachment to this lecture that will walk you through the sentence stem creation process . This way, you can feel at ease in creating your own sentence stems and teaching your clients to create there's 6. AI: Skillshare Original Content : it seems as though our lives can get overrun with negative messages. Whether it's a subtle message shaming you for your body shape an overt criticism from a boss or a colleague, it's quite frankly easier sometimes to focus on the negative because it surrounds us. These harmful messages, however, they do take a significant toll on well being and on confidence. And that's why it's essential to use the language of appreciative inquiry and to use it often. As one of my personal mentors, Tal Ben Shahar, is fond of saying, When we appreciate the good, the good appreciates, appreciative inquiry, which is the other AI and the language of appreciative inquiry. It sounds different than the typical down trodden talk. Ai, in a therapeutic coaching sense, uses questions and enquiries to help bring to the surface the things that are going well in someone's life. Nearly every one of my own coaching sessions begins with the question. So tell me, client, what went well this week. The therapeutic magic in appreciative inquiry is that it brings to the surface the positive aspects of a person's life. It also creates a platform for examining why things go well when they dio, both of which allow you and your client to then set this strategy that's focused around doing more of those things that create those positive results. There are no limits whatsoever, absolutely none to what appreciative inquiry questions sound like. And really, that's part of the magic. That's part of the point. Each coach, you and I, each one of us, has our own unique personality, our own unique manner of speaking so each person can be creative in and how they bring to the surface the positives. Examples of appreciative inquiry style questions would simply be things like What would, well, what's going well in your social life right now? What strengths do you rely on when you are at your very best? What's one peak experience that you had this month? The coaching document has sample questions for you to work with and for you to practice. And really, once you become comfortable with the basics of AI, begin immediately to develop your own appreciative inquiry questions. And I may even decide to run sort of a coach training contest where I'll pick out some of the most insightful AI questions. So as you come up with these questions that that bring to the surface the good, post those questions to the course discussion boards so everyone can have an opportunity to check them out.
