About This Class

Do you want to improve your GIS skills with free open source software tools?

Do you want to get ready for your next GIS job in the geospatial industry?

You are here because you want to learn geographic information systems with open source tools, right?

I am so excited to have you here!

You may have some prior experience in GIS or are just getting started.

In this course, I will help you to get started your geospatial learning journey by walking you through practical exercises using open source software tools.

What makes me qualified to teach you?

I am Dr. Alemayehu Midekisa, PhD and I am lecturer and research scientist at the University of California. I have over 10 years of experience in the geospatial industry. I am also the recipient of one the prestigious NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship. I teach over 10,000 students online.

In this Introduction to GIS: Spatial Data Analysis with QGIS course, I will help you get up and running a QGIS software. By the end of this course, you will not only master the theoretical concepts of s geographic information systems, but also most importantly equipped with a set of new GIS skills including accessing, processing, analyzing, visualizing and sharing spatial data.

One of the common problems with learning GIS is the high cost of software. In this course, I entirely use open source free software. Additionally, I will walk you through a step by step video tutorials to handle a GIS data in QGIS platform. All sample data will be provided to you as an added bonus through out the course.

What are you waiting for to get started with your geospatial learning journey? This course completely free!

To get started click the enroll button.

I hope to see you in the course soon!

Who is the target audience?

  • Download and Install QGIS
  • Import CSV and GIS data into QGIS
  • Create professional GIS maps
  • Learn to create and share online maps using web GIS platforms

2. SectionIntro IntroductiontoGIS: Hey, all, um, are you here today? We're going to be discussing the basic concepts of geographic information system, or G ice will discuss the definition of Jai's, the components of the ice, the questions that Aggie ice can answer. And finally, we'll talk about some application off the ice. Now it's gets that it. 3. Lecture IntroductiontoGIS: Hi, everyone. I am Allah, my you. Today we'll cover some basic GS concepts. Geographic information systems or G ice is a computer system capable of capturing, assembling, manipulating, analyzing and displaying a geographically reference IT information system. Most of the challenge we face in our planet these days in one ship or firm or the other have some sort of geographic or special dimension. GI's provides insides into data and helps to make informed decisions. Was there citing a new business or finding the base soil for growing banner are figuring out the best route for an emergency vehicle. Jazz can help us make smart decisions. Jess provides you was the power to create maps, integrate information, visualized scenarios, solve complicated problems, president powerful ideas and develop effective solutions. What are the questions that Aggie ice can answer? For example, it can provide answers to location pissed information such as, Where is the nearest gas station? Where's the closest supermarket? Where is the nearest gas station? Giants also can answer questions about Potter. What is the flow of traffic along this highway? Yeah, what is this partial distribution off crime in San Francisco? Also, Jazz can answer questions about Trent, for example, Where have glass years retreated in the European Alps? J Sensors question about conditions. Where can I find a hotel? Dutch was in one kilometer of recreational parks and also accessible by public transportation. Finally, just can answer questions about implications. For example, if I moved to a new house, how far will I be from my office? One of the components of G uys, an operational G. I says issues of components that combined to make the system work well. This components include hardware, software, data people and applications are made IDs. Harder is the computer system on which G ICE operates, and a software provides the functions and tools needed to store, analyze and display geographic information. They're meat. It's our app, roots or applications. Sixtus four GS operates according to a well design implementation plan, which are unique to each organization and a procedure applications Medical data input did a management query, analysis and data output. Jazz also involves with people just a technology is off limited volume without people who manage the system and design plants to solve reworded special problems. Giants User Strange from in users to technical specialists who used GS in everyday work. Some of the G ice positions are gesture positions can include data entry did equality. Jay Ison, Alice developer, jazz programmer or a date of his manager, Web developer, project monitor and jazz monitor. And an etcetera. These are some off the job positions that Aggie Ice Person is, um, employed or offered, and also the other main part is data. There is another main component of a Jai's system. Did it, perhaps is the most important component of G ice adjust can integrate special and then special or attribute data, and some of the data types and adjust include maps and layers. It also includes Victor and raster data and also tion and a street E data, text and mental data. So these are all the data types that you encounter in a G. Eyes are geographic information system, and there are other data storage formats multiple ways. For example, ST E A table, a raster format of victor for money or maps and, you know, layers and this. The three victor data types include points lines and polygons. Points are just an X Y coordinate where it's lines are least off. X Y coordinates a connection off different X Y coordinates, or points, and a pole again is leased off lines that from a closed area or just a collection off connected lines. Many disciplines can benefit from a G ice technology. This include tells care, education, business, urban planning, utility, environmental science, military, political signs and real state. 4. Lab QGISUpandRunning: hi in this video with download and install Cure Jays Let's go que jays when a typing cute yes, acute Jace website comes, and then a donut option comes Donald for Windows and Mac and other operating systems. So, for no since my operating systems windows on Goto windows and check my operation system pit mine is 64 bit. So go and download that. Now my download is in progress. So once the download is complete, I can double click the dollar to find to install Cure Gi's on my machine. Me double click your GI's set up. So that's start installation. The installation process takes a little bit of time, so you have to be patient. No installation is on. Progress will come to qg ice. Not all. Next, I'll agree with the default. Who's the directory file? Worry. What's if Q. GI's program files? Usually l checked Data that comes was huge eyes and quick install. No installation is on progress. Have to be a little bit patient. Once the their solution is complete, I'll grant and started a new cure GI's Windows. Before that. It's where the installation process, once the Q. J s installation, is complete, you can start a new cure Jazz station If you open que Jay's, you'll find apart from an interface like this, the Q jazz interface has forest stations. The 1st 1 is the map canvas of the Santer. This is where you visualize your data, your special data beat a raster or vector data, and the next one is the layers panel. Once you add ghee ice leers, beat a victor a raster data. You can see those leers on the Lear spot. You can check out and check in, or you can drag out, pinned down to change their overly in the map in the map canvas. You also have tool bars, a list of tool bars at the top here, for example, you have your save button. Um, zoom in and zoom out and various tubers, which help you to visualize and analyze your special data. You also have a main at the top, including project Edit View lairs, and it's a trap. This will help you visualize and analyze your data, for example, including importing your data. For example, layers. If you click on the leers, you have released a list of items that can help you, um, adding import and analyze leaders. And the last thing is this status bar at the bottom and the status bar. You can see the scale of your data, your GPS data and also the Courtenay system that you have for your current data.
