Project Description

Creating Music Licensing Gold

Licensing Overview

  1. Review the additional resources

Check out the links below for more detailed lists of vocabulary.

Getting Your Music Licensed

  1. Prepare your documentation

Make sure you have the following in order:

    • Splits
    • Any Pre-Clearances (including samples)
    • Producer Agreement (if applicable)
  2. Get multiple versions

Make sure to either make an instrumental version of your music or request one from the mixing and/or mastering engineer.  Having stems is also highly recommended.

  3. Double check your metadata

In iTunes, select the song you want to edit and hit either:

    ⌘- I   or   Control - I   (MAC or PC)

This will open up the Info window displaying the ID3 information for the track.

Here you can input the correct metadata.

Watch the video above for a visual explanation.

Gaining Access to Licensing People

  1. Find Your Team

Find 3 placement companies that you think would be a good fit for you and find out how they accept submissions.

Creative

  1. Listen to these examples

Here are some examples of songs I feel are great for sync.  See if you can find the elements that stick out.

    The Fratellis "Flathead"

    Tim Myers "Good Life"

    Sleigh Bells "Kids"

    Arcade Fire "Wake Up"

    Sigur Ros "Hoppipolla"

    Keane "Somewhere Only We Know"

  2. Submit your song for review

Once you have gone through all the steps suggested in the class and have a song you'd like to be reviewed, please upload it to Soundcloud. Then post the link to the song on the class board and I will review it personally.
