Wild Leadership is an outdoor inspired approach to personal and professional effectiveness. "Get WILD" is an introductory micro-course covering four key principles of the framework - well-being, integration, learning and discovery. Leadership effectiveness starts with leading yourself and "Get Wild" will show you a new approach to your development. You don't have to be "outdoorsy" to learn from this approach. You just have to have an open mind to how and where you can learn. While this course is applicable to all levels of learners, mid-career professionals and first-time leaders may find it most practical.

1. "Get WILD" Introduction: Welcome everyone to whiles leadership. I'm Jackie London and I'm really excited. You're here to join me on this learning adventure. I'm really passionate about learning and I'm particularly passionate about helping people be more effective personally and professionally. While leadership is an outdoor Inspired Approach to effective. And it's the best way I know to be as effective as possible. Watch the next few minutes to get an overview of the four principles of the framework and what you can expect in the course. Yet wild Michael course, I'm going to share the four principles of the law of leadership framework. These principles, our well-being, integration, learning, and discovery. Then I'll share why the outdoors as such, amazing learning space as our technology use increases in our lives. So does the need for more time in nature will explore the benefits to including the doors in our daily life. Finally, you'll assess your current leadership development in relation to the framework and begin building your personal learning guide. There are three main learning objectives in this Micro course. One, describe the four principles of wild leadership to explore how the outdoors impacts our overall effectiveness. And three, assess ONE level of wild leadership at your current life and career stage. This framework is the culmination of 25 years of studies and work life experiences. And it's the best way I know to grow your personal and professional effectiveness. Every chip in every tool that I share with you has been tried and true. It's in my own tool kit and I've gathered it from the many leaders I've worked with throughout my career. I hope everything in this course adds to your toolkit and you find it just as valuable. All my learning adventures are meant to be shared with a great cup of coffee. So grab your favorite latte or get a cappuccino and take 20 or 30 minutes out in your week and enjoy this learning adventure. Get wild. I look forward to seeing you inside the course. 2. "The 4 Essential Principles": Wild leadership is an outdoor inspired approach to leadership. And I use the word leadership when I speak of our ability to produce results and have great relationships, whether it be at home or in our workplaces. Wilde, Of course, implies the great wonder of something in its natural state or in its natural environment. The word can also be used to describe something that is awesome and unique. There are many ways the word is used and many definitions intersect one another. For me, being a world leader is about being true to yourself in all of the environments you find yourself in. This is the best way I know to maximize your personal and professional effectiveness. Let's go over the four wild principles. Well-being is foundational to leading ourselves, and it is much more than just physical health is also societal. Workplace. Emotional, and social. Psychology today uses these five dimensions to describe well-being. And we only focus on just one, that being our physical health. But this can be quite limiting. For example, if you're under severe work stress, this can present itself in your body. You can gain weight or lose weight. Have a weaker immune system, just catch a lot of colds. You can get skinnier rotations and rashes. It's easy to see how these dimensions are interrelated. So it's important that we recognize these connections. Many scholars and organizations can use slightly different dimensions when speaking of well-being. But the most important thing for you to remember today is that they're all connected. And another important point is that well-being changes over time with regards to our age and our life stage. Different stressors are always present as we just continue in our lives. It's completely normal to revisit your well-being on a regular basis because life's constantly changing. I feel this principle of well-being really helps us build our self-awareness, that we know who we are and how we're feeling. And if no one has told you yet that secret ingredient to leadership effectiveness is self-awareness. And leaders, whether or not you have a title includes being a great role model. And this can start with how well you take care of your own well-being. A focus on your wellbeing helps you be an authentic leader. One that is self-aware and consistent and thoughts and actions. You'll be transparent to those around you and you'll be genuine. Principle number two, integration. You know, living our personal and professional lives in separate compartments can be exhausting. I have never believed in work-life balance and I've always tried to look for a more integrated approach to all the roles in my life. Seamlessly blending our roles can really maximize the productivity and all aspects of your life. We only have 24 hours in a day. The day is finite. And so we need to ensure that we ebb and flow according to the needs of all these important roles. When we recognize our whole self through the roles we play, we can maximize our time and energy. I find work-life integration is far more realistic than balance. As a working parent, I always loved my career and I found I needed a lot of choice and flexibility to make it all work. I was always a little out of balance, but I was never out of sync. I preferred to ebb and flow rather than walk a tight rope. A focus on integration helps us be whole leaders when we recognize all the roles in our lives. And we just strive to inspire great relationships in all those roles. Principle number three, learning. Change happens whenever we learn, whether we choose books, classrooms, the Internet. All learning is valuable and learning is a lot easier when it's interesting. Curiosity is a key leadership trait today and it encourages us to learn in everything we do. We live in a VUCA world. That means it's more volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. Things are changing all the time. Embracing learning as a fundamental skill is critical to thriving today. Continuous learning has fast become a competitive advantage for us all. Experience is also important because if we can leverage our experiences, the good ones and the not-so-good ones. We can continue to grow in the flow of our life. A focus on learning helps you be an adaptable leader at home and at work. Let's go to principle number four, Discovery. Trying new things, especially outside, provide so many opportunities for you to face your fears. And fear can hold you back from so much. The greatest rewards, however, come with the greatest risks. So when you move outside your comfort zone, this is where your growth will really happen, whether you're alone or working with other people. Discovery is about unearthing new possibilities as well as ideas and thinking. And the only way to get there these days is to take some risks. The innovative cultures required for today's workplaces also requires risk-taking. So a focus on discovery will help you be an innovative leader. Next, let's look at why the outdoors is such a great place to learn to be a wild leader. 3. "The Value of the Outdoors": Many years ago, I was having a difficult time and felt very stressed out. I was in graduate school, a single-parent tonight, just bought my first house all on my own. I was feeling overwhelmed with everything. Some friends called and suggested that I go to the mountains with them. I hesitated saying I had too much work, too much schoolwork, wasn't finished unpacking. I was filled with excuses. I eventually heard them and joined in and I'm really glad I did. We hiked all day and then were stopped in Canmore on the way home as calories, just 45 minutes to the Rockies. So when you leave, it really feels like you get out of the city. The next day. I was full of energy. I felt happier than I had been in weeks. And needless to say, hey, I've got tons done. It was at that point, I started to make time outside more of a priority in my life. Nature is a great teacher. When you take the time to get outside and pay attention to everything around you. There are many reasons to build a more outdoor focus life. And here are just some that I try never to forget, ever since that day. Being outside as an energy booster. Number one, many studies suggest that spending just 20 minutes and fresh air gives your brain and energy boost. That's comparable to one cup of coffee. And for me, exercising outdoors just feels better. Being outside can also boost your immune system. By stopping to smell a wall, flowers and the trees, we simply become calmer. And the exposure to vitamin D is also an immune booster and can help us manage pain better as well. We just get less colds and flus, perhaps when we spend more time outside. Being outside enhances our creativity. So if you're struggling with writer's block or thinking of new solutions to problems that continue to plague you. You might want to ditch your technology. That includes your laptops and your cell phones. Get into the great outdoors, even just for a few hours. Being outdoors can restore your focus as well. So if you're struggling with concentration, leave your workspace for a few minutes and go stroll at a nearby park, any green space will do. There are strong arguments to show us that walking in nature helps us restore our focus. Being outside simply makes us better. People. Spending time outdoors helps us keep our stresses and pressures and check. It allows us to remember and value what's the most important in our lives, things like relationships and our community. I've discovered a few additional insights and y at a personal level, I want to share those with you. Being in nature teaches you things about yourself that you don't even know yet. When you set out on an unfamiliar trail, you continuously exploring new sites, you learn new paths and have new experiences. I read recently that starting out on a new outdoor adventure and back should be better defined as breathing the unknown. I loved that when I read it. Likewise, the unknown nature can remind us about what we still have to discover about ourselves. You can learn something new every time you go outside. Your strengths and capabilities can be fully realized in the outdoors. When you're faced with a challenge, whether it's an unexpected river or you're wanting to hike and intimidating mountain maybe you've never seen before. You tend to recognize the powerful force of nature. It's easy to focus your attention on the difficulties that are right in front of you. Quickly become obsessed with ways and strategies to get over this obstacle. We often fail to take this time to notice the strengthen ourselves and our resilience. When we see obstacles in everyday life. Wild leadership is about integrating the outdoors with through indoors. Supporting your ongoing development of your overall effectiveness. 4. "Final Thoughts": Effective leadership starts with ourselves, and at every stage of life, we need to own our own personal development. Wild leadership encourages you to be authentic, whole, adaptable, and innovative, all key leadership characteristics for the 21st century. What I've found over the years is that self-reflection is one of the best ways to increase our self-awareness. Self-reflection is a process by which you explore who you are and why you think the way you do and how you act. Simply put, it is a form of self analysis that allows you to bring your life into alignment with whatever you wish it to be. Self reflection is also a means to observe and analyze yourself in order to grow as a person and ultimately as a leader. That growth is the primary reason why it is so important to spend time in reflection. For example, reflecting on how you behave and what thoughts into your mind in response to situations around you and allows you to see what you might need to work on. Perhaps you were a little short and irritable with a colleague recently. By reflecting on that, you might realize that this is not how you wish to be treated and it's not how you want to treat others. You can then address that behavior in the future and this helps guide your next actions. Perhaps you apologize to your colleague. Maybe you weren't particularly in kind. This might lead to an improved working relationship with this person and make for a more enjoyable Workday. Overall. Reflection is also an opportunity to measure your progress in a positive way. You can identify moments where you have responded to a situation with more desirable thoughts and behaviors. It can provide you with a sense of achievement and keep you motivated in your journey to improve yourself, how ever that looks for you. It's very individual. Think of self-reflection as a way to make lots of small course corrections away from less desirable thoughts and behaviors and towards those that promote your greater well-being. Your class project with get wild is your starting point, just like a trail head when you're out on a hike. To think about your approach to adopting these principles over time. Future classes in the wall of the leadership series will delve deeper into each of the core principles. I hope you enjoy this micro learning adventure, and I hope to see you again in other classes.
