1. Creating a Bundle Book Cover Pt. 1 Using the GIMP: Hello, everyone. And welcome to the grand experiment. Um, I thought that I would record some extra gimp footage that I might tack on to any course, because I just picked up a new assignment from my wife sitting behind me. She's always my kind of research in my design assistant. She's always by my side when I do this gimp work on my PC, and she's watching me right now when you so I'm not going to say anything that you know would get me in trouble. So being on my best behavior, what I What I've been given is this assignment to make a book cover for a bundled release. This is a bundle of four stories that are gonna be released. His one. They've already been released individually, and here are their covers. So the idea is to try and get a representation off what these or these four covers on a single cover. Now, how's that for a challenge for you? Okay, here to give you some upfront parameters when I thought is that we need to incorporate the four titles and a little bit of their colors, and they're feel I want to get all four covers in kind of stripes going across the book cover. And then I also want my wife's name, which is Melanie Jackson, and I want bestselling author with that. And then I want a Miss Henry mystery. Now, if you consider that books are typically 2400 pixels tall, or at least they are when I create them that if I have divide them into six. Is that what we're talking about his 400 pixel wide bands for each of those uses? So I'm going to basically create a book cover here. Let's go ahead and will say new and it's well, we're already set up for 1600 wide by 2400 tall. I'm gonna go into advance to make sure that our Phil is white like a nice white cover here , start off with and what I'm gonna dio is go and see how I could merge together and make bands here and put them on their own layers that I could move them around and stuff like that. So I need to cut out of this book. A what did we decide on 400 pixel band? And to do that, I want to get this blue and I want period. So they're gonna have to overlay each other to a certain extent which I think would actually look good. Wonder why I didn't do it on the original cover and then we're going to catch just a bit of this picture. We're basically just going to take a swath out of this thing after moving, the word blew down. So let's go ahead. Will grab the B Or is this this might be all a blue or it might just be the be. I don't know. I'm going to grab it, whatever it ISS and I'm gonna move it down into necessary here, where they start toe kind of merged together. I think that's kind of interesting. Now, I don't know if I made it down to the swath size that I need, but then you know there might be some extra room on either side from the SWATs, so let's go ahead and try cropping this to the size that we want. First, let's go ahead and will grab and will pull together all the layers that we want. I want Blue and I went period, I hope Blue and Period are okay, Not together. So I will merge down to get blue and period together. And then I want them the wall in the frame. I'm gonna keep emerging down. Eventually we'll get to the point that we actually have everything on a single layer that I could go and snag it. Now we want to go right down to the wall. But we don't want Melanie Jackson. So let's move this down here. Oh, I'm sorry. Move it down with the downward arrows and then finally merge it into the wall. Kind of a strategic merge down. Okay, Now, I should be able to go ahead and grab a swath. And I am going to do that by selecting somewhere up at the top of my area that I want. Now, the other thing I probably should have done on this was change the size that you can actually see what was going on, but I'm happy working at weird sizes here. We want this to begin at zero. We're doing clean up here in the lower left. Um, as far as that, where that begins, I don't know, but I know it's supposed to be 1600 wide And there we go. I'm gonna go ahead, and I'm going to say edit. Copy that, and I'm going to go to my new cover where I'm gonna do. Ah, I'm gonna create a new layer. You always do that. It's gonna be transparent. I'm gonna go ahead and I'm gonna edit paste. So here's kind of our swath for blue, period. I think it's too tall. Walls, we're gonna have toe shrink it down a little bit. And I don't know if that means applying mawr gray over to the right here and shrinking it in this direction. Um, but for right now, let's see if we can get it in the ballpark by bringing down all sides. So I'm gonna go ahead. I'm not grab the our scale tool, but it grab its corner. We're gonna come down proportionally, and I'm gonna just take it down into the area of you. See, 400 is what we want. Yes, really quite small, isn't it? Okay, go ahead and we'll do that. It gets blue period in there. Now, The first thing that I like to do up front when I start working on projects to is to do a save as because right now this is entitled. I'm gonna go ahead and I'm going to save it in my pictures directory under Brian stuff. I'm going to call it Bundle one Xia. It was the only bundle I've got there. Okay, so we kind of incorporated blue period. We keep on going until we get all of the images in here. Now, I'm might be a little quiet as I do this because it's going quite slow having to describe everything that I'm doing. So if you don't quite understand what I'm doing, um, that's too bad, because I've got to get this cover done and out. Let's go ahead and we will. Who or is Memento Mori? There it is. Emerged down birch down. And that should get us momento mori and the dog's head. I'm gonna go ahead and select it. Cut that out. Going to be at zero? Yeah, about that one. But I will be 1600 wide and there We've got the full with, so I will go ahead and edit copy. Come to here where I have not anchored mile area there. We have anchored it now where I can now create a new layer that's transparent. I'll go ahead and I will edit paste. And, uh, that's darn close, but we're still gonna have to resize it, so I will grab it by 1/4 pull it down, maintaining the aspect ratio until we get to about mm. 400. Here we go. And I'll move that up out of the way of the other one before we trot down and anchor that. Shuffle that over here and move on to the next image here. Now, I don't know if you know, I guess order actually, probably does matter here. So what I'm gonna do, so I'm gonna take blue Period, which came first, and move that up towards the top lips blue period here toward the top, and we'll move. Ah, Memento Mori down below it, something like that. And now I'm gonna go after eye of the beholder. So Wow, look at this. This is all separate layers. The quickest way to get around this is to right, click and say, rather than merging down every individual layer, you could do this. You can say merge visible layers and how they all become one. Now, I'm kind of looking at it is kind of like a J Peg file. There's only one layer, but it makes it easy to go and cut the swath that I want. It looks like I might have to resize that swath somehow. But anyway, we're going to go ahead and select, appear the top of the image, everything, and we're gonna get wallpaper behind it. That's kind of our signature. I of the Boulder look is the color of the fine and the wallpaper behind it. So let's go down and check out close. We got our position. Do zero, and it has to be. This is a slightly Oh, that's right. Ah, different dimension to image. So we'll see how this works out. Let's go ahead and add it. Copy that, and then we will go to here. We will add our new layer transparent, and we'll go there and do an edit paste. Let's move that somewhere into position down here. Interesting. Maybe all layers don't need to be equal, but I'm kind of getting jazzed by seeing all the covers together like this. Um okay. And that one's been accumulated or harvested. Now now comes drowning pool. Okay, So to do. This will go once again to the drowning pool. And I'm gonna take a swath right at grounding pool. So I want once again everything merged together. So you go over here to the layers window, right click. And you say that second from the bottom, merge down visible layers. There you go. Now it's all when layer were less, treating it like a J peg file and you go here and say, Select it's chunk here, through that chunk there. Let's make sure that you're selecting the full width. There we go. We look good. So we will and it. Copy that. Come here. Oh, we have a floating layer that we forgot to anchor. We anchor that layer, which will allow us to create a new, transparent layer where we will paste are drowning pool. Now you can see that we're running seriously out of real estate here. Um, drowning pool is going to have to come down significantly in sizes as well. Probably most of the things on here. Okay, we're maintaining the aspect ratio. Let's grab the corner, bring down drowning, pool down, and, um, move it out of the way. Now, as it turns out. This is looking kind of interesting. Just from this rough cut. Um, I'm getting ideas. Oh, we have to anchor that of, um, what I might do with this. In fact, just doing this it looks interesting. Now, I'm sure that were up there in recording time. I'm gonna do a little fudging around offline, and when I come back, we'll do the middle part of making this book cover. 2. Creating a Bundle Book Cover Pt. 2: So we're here. We are. After having harvest the last for book covers, we now have little chunks of each book cover on our emerged book covers here. And what I thought I'd see is if I could glitch that, get the strips of book cover to blend into the background a little better, and the background ultimately isn't gonna be white. I think I'm going to use maybe some starry sky or something dark like that just to give you head head. So the way that I was thinking of doing this is going to let's begin with Memento Mori. Since we're on that layer already, I'm going to add a layer mask so I will do this by right clicking on the layer in the layer menu and I'll bring up add layer mask. Now remember what a layer mask allows you dio. Is it Everything that's white in a layer mask allows the image that's associated with it to show through everything that's black blocks the image from showing through and allows the images below to show through. Instead, that would be the white background. So here we have an entirely white layer mask, which is allowing everything from Memento Mori to show through. Now let's go from white to black. We're all set up to do that. We're going to put in a Grady Int And instead of a standard Grady int which would be the linear Grady it which were used. Teoh, we're going to use once again if you remember from Spears, we're gonna use the radial Grady int because I want kind of around actually on elliptical Grady int to be in here toe let a kind of, ah, an elliptical area of this to show through. So we'll make sure that our layer mask part and not the actual images selected. And from here we will drag an elliptical Grady int from the center of the image to the edge . Here we go, and it's made the image fade out at the edges. Actually, it's made it fade out, um, little to effectively, Let's see a weekend. Get that to, uh, maybe fade out a little less That's the same Fade out. Well, what we're gonna do is we're gonna stretch and play with the fade out anyway. And this is the way that we're going to do it right now. It's it's perfectly round. You can see here in the in the layer mask a little snapshot that it's giving you the shape of the thing. Now, if we go and we start modifying our Grady int, you'll actually see the Grady it pop up. So I'm going to flatten it to make it elliptical. So we'll grab the top of the Grady and in here it pops up. You could actually see what it is we've been drawing in the layer mask. Now let's grab the top and let's squish this. So we've got something more or less the shape of the book cover or the piece of the book cover that we're pulling out something like that. Now, Memento Mori is going to completely disappear because now it has black and layer mask covering it. If we go ahead and grab and here it is, are little Grady it and pull it up Here we now have an elliptical Grady int showing through momento mori. Okay, now, I didn't quite catch what I did there. Well, you're going to get to see it three more times because we're in. Apply it to each of the layers. I'll see if I could find something interesting to talk about as I do this on this to remind you an adult your mask to make it entirely white. So blue period shows through. Now we have a white layer mask, We're gonna go to it, and we're going to create a Grady it from about the center of the image to its edge. It'll be a circular Grady int which will fade out the edges of the words. Now we're going to go ahead, and we're gonna flatten that thing. So it's more elliptical and more the shape of what we're trying to let show through Will do that by using the's scale tool, making sure that our layer mask is selected. Grab the top of our little sphere. Uh, you see, we're maintaining the aspect ratio here. We didn't want that. We want to break the chain here and crush it so we will pull that down, crushing our little shadow. Blue period will disappear because now it has black behind it until we grab and pull our little Grady int up where blue period waas Now blue period shows through getting beginning to get the idea what we're doing here um Now, this mayor may not work. In the end, you've got to take a chance when you're making book covers and try things out and see what they're gonna end up looking like. So we may completely hunt Do this, but let's go and do it one more time. We're going to apply a layer mask. See how fast we could do this. It'll be white. We will pull a Grady it on lips side of the boulder from the center to the edge. It will make it blur out. And we will take that and crush it with the re scale tool. Grab the top, making sure we have layer mask selected whips. Make sure we're on the right layer. There we go. Grab the top were unchanged, so it's not gonna maintain the aspect ratio. We want to make this somewhat less crushed because the words are bigger and we could see part of them. Let's move that thing right in to where we want it. Something like that. And the last one, the drowning pool. Here we will create a layer mask. It's weight. Pullig radiant center to the edge. Go ahead and select that layer mask. Use the scale tool to crush. It wants crab the bottom and pull it out this time. But we don't want this to be too flat either, because it's, ah, two words tall. Let's go ahead and pull that into position. Now we can mess with ease. Um, these images, too. Oh, look, it cut off the top of my Grady int. No, unfortunate. Is that a little bit? Only kind of noticed that now we can mess around with these Grady INTs redraw them again to make them just the right size that this stuff blur is out. Um, here. So what I can do now is I can start moving things Ah, little closer to one another and get a background image on here so we can see what that's gonna look like because I'm gonna need more room for the, um, the name of the Siri's and for the author name, which I'm also going to fit on here. So let's see how we could do that. We are going to Well, let's actually let's put a background image on here when I was thinking is something MM dark. Something to offset the lightness that we've got going on with the, uh, the name. So I'm going to go search by doing a file SRT file open search my catalog of images that I have and we'll see if any of thes have something like Night Sky. Here is some night desert. Oh, look at that. That's incredibly dramatic. What would happen if we use that as the background? Well, to use it, the first thing we have to do is make sure that it is theory right size, which would be 1600 wide and 2400 tall, have to break the chain just to get those two out of there. And there we go. Now it's the right size that we select it all at it. A copy. Come here to the background and do an edit paste. Now, here, you can see our, uh the names of our books are now kind of fading into this spooky background. Now we get the sizes of the blurs, corrects that we have the actual full title showing through and position these correctly. I think we're gonna have plenty of room for a strip for the name of the book and for the author now, as to whether we like this image, the in the end, whether palm trees actually makes sense, we might find another image. But this is the general effect that I was looking for, and we're going to send spend the rest of this lecture cleaning it up and making it work. But right now, I'm gonna take a break, and we're going to move to the next lecture. 3. Creating a Bundle Book Cover Pt. 3: Welcome back While you were gone, I did a little bit of cleanup by found that just having strips of the book covers in the background, you could end up seeing the lines. So I cleaned it up by bringing in the full book cover to each layer. And then I actually resized the Grady INTs so that each title here you can more or less see it. It's still very, um, ghostly, very fading into the background. And it's a very eerie background toe have on the whole piece. Um, it's an interesting book cover so far. I don't know if the text is quite popping enough for my liking, but what we're thinking of doing now is putting the name of the Siris on it and the author title, and the way that we're gonna do that is we're going to have a strip across here of color in , which will put the Siri's title. So let's do that first. What I'm going to do is go to the top and add a new layer transparent. Now, on this layer, I'm going to pull ah horizontal bar across here. That will be big enough to have some words in it now we don't want to mess up. All are fine. Work here once again to make it perfect. Weaken Position it zero and make it a with of 1600. Now we know that it spans from edge to edge and as far as the color, obviously a dark color. I don't know of black is the right color or a very dark gray, but I'm going to go here and look, here's a very dark grey. Let's try that. Um, this is almost black. It's about as great as you could get without going black. We're going to use the fill tool to go ahead and fill that with the gray. Okay. And then we're going to pick up front and in white. We're going to put the Miss Henry a Miss Henry mystery as far is what this is. And I actually like the fund that we used in the original covers, which was imprint. Hey, did you notice that that you could go here onto the fonts? You can type the beginning of any name. It will bring up ah selection list for you rather than Hamiti. Pour through the fonts every names time, so remember your font names. Just type the beginnings here. Now, 500 is probably gonna be way too large. So let's bring it down to 200 and go here. A I'd ignored me, Miss Henry Mystery. And once again, I got to go to figure the color changed on me. There we go. And we're still too large by quite a ways when 50 might be a better size are still too large 20 So you keep shrinking it until it fits on the screen. Looks like 1 30 is about the perfect size. Let's go ahead and we will put that into position and hope that it fits on our bar, which it does very nicely up. Just a tad right. It's looking good. And they're now we have a Miss Henry mystery clearly sticking out on the book cover. And now I'm gonna put the author's name of the bottom. Now, you know, I would probably use another bar just to make this pop out. And the gray bar is working so well that I think I'm gonna go ahead and do a great bar at the bottom so we'll go ahead and will pull another bar Let's go ahead. What do we do first? Always new layer transparent. And I will pull a new bar here, making it a little bit thicker because I want to put best selling author and we can actually get rid of the floor which came over here with I have the beholder, which I don't particularly want to see and the trunks on the palm trees. It's 0 1600 won a nice pull that was and we're gonna go ahead. We're going to dump, are gray into it. And then in that same, I think I'm going to do her name once again in the imprint. So we will dio Melanie, Let's do the All Caps thing. Melanie Jackson Looks like we could make this a little larger. Let's try 50. There we go. And hopefully we have room for best selling author. Pull that over here and then put very low that Jay doesn't quite make it. Ah, okay. We might need to make the black bar or the great bar a little larger. That's easy. Dio, Just go back to the gray. Oh, that's already selected. So does that mean we can grab the selection? I think it does now. Selection went away. Okay, so we select again a little bit larger this time just below the b older. We'll come, come across there were doing great. Let's go ahead and dump are gray lips. Undo our friend. Where? Edit Undo. Help me. There we go. I need my gray back again. There it is. And we will go ahead and dump that gray. Now we've got more room for best selling author. So go here. We'll get our white back again. I like when it comes to best selling author to do times. And here pops times new Roman. I like I talic. So when you do that and, um, more like 100 let's go ahead and click here. We'll do, um, best selling author boy. That's just barely fitting. We might need to do some more stuff here to get things to fit, but we'll pull that up, and it's very small. I particularly want that either. What's canceled? This Okay. And let's get a sense of our book covers shall way Get all the funny marching ants out of the way by selecting none. Okay, this is beginning to look interesting. Um, I don't know if I'm totally sold, but I got to show you several techniques and were part of the way toward having a book cover anything. I think the bars need to be snatched up a little bit. And ah, we need to clean up the text down here. But basically, this is kind of our emerged book cover and notice how we managed to get all four of the book covers represented in here. We used radiance toe pull them into the background to blend them into the background rather and to make a very interesting book cover. I hope that this was informative for you. I'm gonna go and finish this book cover now I will post the finished book cover for you to take a look at
