About This Class

In this class we use Fusion 360 to design a taco stand so you can be ready for taco Tuesday.  After 3D printing your own taco stand you'll never suffer again for tipping taco.  We'll first design a taco to ensure a perfect fit.  This lesson allows us to continue our practice of designing with components.  Make sure to watch lesson 8 in the series prior to this lesson.

Vladimir Mariano is the instructor of the course 3D Designing for 3D Printing with Fusion 360. He is cofounder and president of the Fairfield County Makers' Guild, an independent makerspace in Norwalk, CT and founder of CT Robotics Academy. He teaches 3D printing and design at the makerspace as well as electronics and programming classes. Vladimir also teaches several maker related classes at local libraries and schools and was the coach for a local robotics team. He has a degree in Geology from West Virginia University and a RobotC Programming Instructor Certification from Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy.

1. 01 Intro: 2. 02 Why Design a Taco: look at that beautiful taco and tackle stand. We all know the problem, right? It's taco Tuesday. We want enjoy our dinner. We set our attack or down on our plate and it tips over and everything just comes spilling out. We lose our tomatoes and are shredded cheese in our ground beef, and it's just a mess. So we're gonna solve that problem today by designing a tackle stand. So you might be asking. Well, why did you design a taco as well? Can be three d print a tackle. Well, you can. But with no the printer I'm gonna be using, you won't be able to eat it. Or at least I wouldn't recommend it. Um, the reason we're going to design the taco is because sometimes you're gonna find out it's more efficient to go ahead and design that one thing that your particular model is trying to support or that it's going to enclose or, ah, different part that it's going to interact with. In this case, we're gonna be holding a tackle way. We want to make sure it's gonna work. So I opened up a box of tackles and I grabbed my digital caliper and I got the dimensions and I modeled my taco, which then made it a lot easier to go in and just model my tackle stand around my tackle. Now it makes the designing process easier. Um, and it makes the whole, uh, three D printing of a lot more efficient, because what you'll come to find out is there's always problems at the end. We'll your your prints and and you will to use it and you'll realize, Oh, I made it to wide The tackle doesn't sit right. It's, you know, it's too narrow at one point this way. Just going ahead and designing the tackle modeling around that saves a lot of those other troubles we're gonna face. This is also works incredibly well or is a good good approach. When, when you're doing enclosures, for example, that one thing you're gonna wanna put inside that enclosure, um, you know, is usually gonna have mounting holes or screw holes. And it's a lot easier or a lot more efficient to go ahead and design it and then model your enclosure around it. So okay, enough explaining. Let's just go ahead and jump in 3. 03 Design Taco: And so we're gonna go to file no design, and we'll go ahead and save our tackle stand. Um, so called this psycho stand, and we're gonna go ahead and start with components again. We're working with more than one part, So good idea to start with components, so we'll go right click new component, and we're gonna click twice to give this a name. We'll start with the taco so we'll go ahead and call this taco and will create a sketch. So sketch create sketch x Y plane, and we're gonna begin with a rectangle. I'm going to start at my origin and give this a dimension of 58 which is the height of my tackle by 14 which is half the with Okay. Next, I'm gonna grab a point sketch point and I'm gonna place that's in the bottom here, and I'll explain why in a minute I'm going to give this a dimension of two millimeters from that origin, and I'm going to grab my splaying tool, and I'm gonna place this plein started over here. Gonna place one note over here and and at my point and click the check mark. Okay. So that looks good. Remember, with this plane weaken, grab this. These end points and change moving around, Teoh, change our curvature. I'm gonna head escape because I don't want to move it. And we can also move this point around as well if we want to. But everything looks good. I gonna leave it as is. It's just a taco. I don't have to get too crazy here. Um, gonna go ahead and choose this line here. I'm gonna click X to make it a construction line. And I'm gonna go ahead and mirror this about the other side. So I'm gonna go to sketch mirror True's 123 For Go over here in our dialogue box and click on my mirror Align Selection of minute choose my construction line and click OK, there we go. This is a profile. I'm looking for someone to click. Stop, sketch and go ahead and extrude this So I'm gonna eat for extrude grab the center part and start dragging it out. Now I want this to be some metric, so I'm gonna go ahead and choose symmetric for direction. It's gonna be new body. The distance is going to be my tackles 130 me millimeters. I know that because I measured it. Um, but this it looks really long. And that's because I picked symmetric. So it's knowing that to both sides. So what I need to do is half that So 1 30 divided by two click. Ok, All right. There's my taco. And we're gonna go ahead and doesn't look quite like attacker yet. It still needs a little sort of, you know, that arc shape. So we'll go ahead and do that now. So we're gonna create a noose cash, and we're gonna choose this center plane here. A good thing about starting your designs right at that origin is that you can then take advantage of these planes when you're when you're designing. So let's select that plane and you can see I can go ahead and expand my taco component here , and I could turn bodies on and off. But before I turn this off to start sketching, I'm gonna project this image. So I'm gonna pee for Project select inside that a model and then click. OK, Now I can go ahead and turn off the bodies and I have that outline of my shape. So I'm gonna choose the three point arc some medical arc three point our choose this endpoint this and point careful that you're actually choosing the endpoints and come up to the midpoint as the bulge we're gonna hit stops catch. Gonna choose thes two profiles. Actually, he first for extrude choose thes two profiles. Um, start dragging this out, it's gonna tell me I don't see anything. So I'm gonna turn bodies back on and I can see that I can not use that to cut away this part of the tackle that I don't need. I want to cut both sides, so I'm gonna go to symmetric and make sure that says cut and distance, I'm gonna go to all and click, OK, And there is our tackle. This is one solid tacko, and we're gonna need to shell this taco pun intended. So let's go to modify shall click on the top here. Oh, or any part of this surface here and it's gonna ask us for a thickness. I'm going to make this 0.8 millimeters because I wanted to I wanted to be two shells, right, My nazal with this 20.4, So I'm gonna make that two shells by making this point for, um, inside or outside. I am going to do outside. Yes, I have to re answer if he wants. You changed the actually, No. It's gonna be inside because I have measured to my outside. Um, so I'm gonna add material to D Insight. Okay, That's good. All right, so there is our tackle. Um, no one wants a great taco, So let's go ahead and change the properties here. We're gonna going to right? Click on where it says tackle on the top of my component, go down to parents. Um, let's go ahead and shoes. So I went down to plastic and OPEC, and then I'm gonna true's, uh, this yellow color here. Okay, That looks more like a taco shell. All right, that looks good. So now we're ready to go ahead and design our stand 4. 04 Sketch Stand: So I'm gonna collapse all these, and then we're gonna go up here to New component and with a click twice over here and go ahead and type stand. So now, to create the stand, we're gonna go ahead and reference that tackle. So I'm gonna go to this sort of profile view, and we'll go ahead and start in the sketch. So sketch creates sketch. And again, I'm gonna choose this middle claim here to start sketching. So let's go ahead and do that. And I'm just gonna start drawing some lines. So I'm gonna start at the origin. Gonna grab one line here up to here, Just some random point. Come up. Um, and I'm gonna click my check. Mark can just sort of this. Ah, this line right here. That's just basic artists to straight made of two lines. Now, the reason I'm able to see the tackle was you know, I have this light on, so make sure if you don't see yours that that light is on, and if you still don't see it, you want to make sure that your body's just turned on. So if you expand this and you got bodies here, you know, make sure these two are okay. Um, let's go ahead. I'm gonna want this lying to extend to, but be about, you know, half the height of this tackle. I don't need it to go all the way up. Um, halfway should be planning. So I'm gonna hit line and I'm going to construct the line. I'm gonna make sure it's horizontal going to give this at the mention of, um, let's say my tackle high is 58 So I'm gonna make this 58 divided by two. Set that height didn't also make it a construction line by clicking, adding clicking. Next, let's make this line extend out to that. Construction lines are gonna go to sketch, uh, pick extent and just hover over this little extended. Perfect. Okay, now we're ready to enter and dimension for this angle over here. So work D for Dimension. I'm gonna choose this line and also the line down in the bottom, and I can choose which side I want to answer that dimension. So I'm gonna choose this angle here, give it a dimension of 70 degrees, and that looks good. Now I'm ready to go ahead and offset that line. So we'll go having true's off sac click on this drag to negative part. We're gonna enter negative two millimeters and had answered. Okay, let's extend this line up as well. So sketch extend. Click on that. That looks good. And we're pretty much almost done. I'm gonna close off this part here. It's hard to see with this, um, construction line there, So I'm gonna just click on this line and deleted for now. I don't need it anymore, So I'm gonna help for a line and just closed this off. Okay, Now I'm ready to go ahead and mirror this about this side. So first, I'm gonna need a construction line to mirror. It's going to create one Click it and head axe. And now I can go to sketch mirror, choose each one of these lines. That's gonna be 123 for and five, uh, choose my Maryland, which is gonna be this line. And there we go. So that looks good. You can see my profile is now shaded in if it's not shaded in if you don't see it, um, do you probably forgot to choose one of these lines when you were creating your mirror. So go ahead and redo that part. So it's turn on the bodies, and so we can now see if I click on the back of the cube over here, Um, we can see that there's our tacko shell. And here is our profile of four stand. I'm can actually move this in a little bit because I feel like we can go a little bit closer. Um, you know, I don't want to say I have it too far out where attack was gonna wobble, so I'm just gonna move this in, and it looks like this distance. I'm gonna have to set that again. So let's click d for this here, and I'm gonna set that to two millimeters. Okay, Now, if I move this in Okay, they should move together. That's dismiss. It should stay consistent. I'm just gonna move it in. So it's just barely touching my tackle. Yeah, that looks good. And gonna hit Stop sketch 5. 05 Enhance the Taco Stand: Okay, now we're ready to extrude this. I'm gonna eat for extrude. Click on that profile start, You know, dragging this out and it is the same thing. Um, you know, this should start being familiar now, so I'm gonna go to from one side to symmetric and for the distance. I don't need this to go the whole distance of the taco. My No, my talk was 130 millimeters. I'm gonna hit 1 30 No, actually, I'm going to do I'm gonna make it 80 and 80 millimeters wide, so I'm gonna do 40. And since it's symmetric, it's gonna double that. Okay, that looks good. So far, my tackle looks like it's, you know, So it's well inside my stand. Um, So I'm gonna go ahead now. I don't really need that profile showing anymore, so I'm gonna just turn that off for now. I'm so I'm going to go to the tackle part and Tyrell, that light will mawf. Okay, so now I just have my stand over here, and so that's spruce this up a little bit. I mean, we can print this, but it's kind of bland. Um, it would be kind of need if there was a little shape of a tackle on the outside here. So let's go ahead and do that. So we will go to sketch creates catch, and we're gonna draw on this plane here, so be careful here. I mean, it's it's hard to selectively contract going here and select it on this angle, but we can actually selected through the actual stand. If I left click and hold, I get some options. And if I hover over each of these, you know the corresponding plane or face will light up. In this case, I want that work planes. I'm gonna goto work plain, and you can see it light up, and I'm going to choose that. Okay, Now, I'm gonna go ahead and projected this shape into my sketch, see if I turn off the bodies. Um, make sure it's easy when you're working with components to kind of get confused, which one you're working with? So I'm gonna collapse the taco and expand my stand here, and I have bodies on that I can work with. So under my taco are under my stand. Ah, component. There's one body there. Okay, So, Aiken, title either the parent body or, um, this body here. So if I title that on a rough, you see that nothing is there, I lose my reference. So I'm gonna hit P for project click on that and now and click. OK, And no, I could tackle that off, and I have my outline. So let's go ahead and now create. Ah, sort of a little, um, arch in here are are little tackle, tackle profile. So in order to do that, we'll start with a line, and I'm just gonna grab a line from the center point, go down and I'm gonna grab a center rectangle. So we're gonna go to sketch and rectangle center rectangle, and I'm gonna find my midpoint. So once you see that triangle, that's your midpoint. Drag this out and I'm gonna make this 20 millimeters in height by 50 wide hit answer two times and there's our i rectangle and I'm gonna use this rectangle to create an arch. So I'm gonna go to a sketch three point arc and shoes this point on this point, go come up to the midpoint and attack. Okay, that looks good. You can see that It skylights. Thes profile separate. So I'm just gonna click on this middle line hit X, Make that a construction line. Now I have the whole thing selected by just hovering over it. So let's go ahead and stop Sketch and I'm gonna take this, you know, first Haiti for extrude hit that profile. Start extruding it. Let's go ahead and turn bodies back on. And so now let's look at our dialogue box. I'm gonna go from one side to symmetric operation is going to be cut and if we go to distance all, it'll go ahead and cut all the way through. So that looks good so far. So let's go ahead and click, OK? And we have our will tackle profile that cuts through our tackle stand. So this actually serves two purposes. One. It just that's gonna look nicer, you know, instead of just this land stand, Um, too, it reduces the amount of filaments where we have to use, you know, by not having to print now this middle part and so therefore it's also been a print faster . So, um, kind of solve a few few issues there 6. 06 Add Fillets: Okay, so now we can go ahead and start putting in some fillets. Something ahead f for Philip. Choose these four corners here, and I'm gonna go ahead and it's you to the right side of the view Cube. And I'm gonna just drag this, and till it kind of starts looking good, um, you're gonna give it a fill out of 10. That looks good. That's also Philip thes corners here just to make this look more like a tackle, something had f grab each one of these corners and we'll give this a fill. It of two looks good. Just look at that from the side. Um, yeah, that looks good. So we're gonna click, OK? And one more fill it. This one is more for structural strength rather than, um, you know, a parent's sorry and I hit have for Philip grabbed the inside on. If we do feel that on these corners, it just gets gonna make it a little more durable. So I'm gonna kind of go. Ah, let's try fill it of five here. Yes, I like that. Um, that looks good. Someone, It's like, OK, and there we go. I believe that's everything we needed to do. Um That looks like a pretty solid taco stance. Let's go ahead and turn on our taco body here. Um, there we go. I think we can go ahead. Let's change the color of this stand just like we did with the tackle. So I'm gonna let's choose the stand going to right click and go down to a parents and we get our the parents, but a dialog box here. I'm gonna go to plastic and gonna goto a peg. I think this green color will go good with that yellow tackle. So let's throw that on there. Click OK, I'm gonna go back here, not at the top of the browser. And there we go. That's our tacko and tackle stand. So let's compare it with our other one. Um, looks pretty similar, So Ok, guys, I hope you enjoyed that. Now you can go ahead and enjoy your tackle. Bon appetit.
