Fusion 360 is fast becoming the go-to software for 3D modelling. The software allows you to create 3D models that can then be sent to a 3D printer or CNC machine to be made either in the workplace or at home. If you are interested in learning how to create your own complex models to print on your 3D printer then Fusion 360 is the software for you. It's intelligent tools and workflow allows you to create a wide range of objects and best of all, the software is completely FREE for non- commercial use!.

It is important that you learn to use Fusion 360 correctly from the start if you want to become a proficient creator and this course teaches you all the skills you need to know. By learning from someone that has been using the software since it's release and that is still working as a designer in the industry today, you will learn correct techniques and good practices that would allow you to use Fusion 360 in the workplace if you so desired.

Course Outline:

  • We start at the very beginning by teaching you what the software actually does and showing you where to get it. We then move on to learning the basic navigation and workflow of the software.

  • Next we show you some basic modelling techniques before getting stuck in and creating our very first part.

  • Next we will move on to more advanced modelling techniques and then learn how to put it all together to create assemblies. Follow along as we create a project assembly in real time.

  • After we have learned these more advanced techniques the fun really begins and we learn to apply realistic materials and make our assemblies move.

  • The final section will show how to output your design, whether it's as a photo-realistic rendered image, a rendered animation of the moving design or to a 3D printer.

I have over 23 years experience as a Draughtsman & CAD Designer in a wide variety of disciplines. I started on a drawing board learning traditional drafting skills and witnessed the introduction of CAD softwarinto the industry. Originally starting on the very basic AutoCAD release 10 I have used every version of AutoCAD since as well as adding various other CAD software. This has given me a unique insight into how best to utilise these great tools in the real world environment.

1. 01 Introduction: in this course will be looking at the fusion free 60. Software, starting from complete beginnings, will learn where to get the software and then move on to basic modeling simple shapes. After learning all the popular modified techniques, well, then learn how to create functional assemblies and model your own designs Well, then learn how to create moving assemblies using joints that move as they would in the real world before learning how to output. These designs toe a technical drawing on animated video or maybe to a three D printer. Such a base designs here, so join us as we begin to learn this fantastic free D modeling software. 2. 02 What is Fusion 360: hi, guys. And welcome to this cost in auto desk fusion free 60. So, first of all, is it just a bit of an introduction? Um, what is fusion? Well, also, desk is probably the market leader in cut design software two D and free day. Some of you may know, Auto Cat, some of you may have to my previous course on auto Cut, but is Freedy. It's primarily started a two D package and cut kind of has evolved from there. We've end self things at Autodesk Inventor and Solid Works, which was the mechanical and production Freedy software. And these are kind of very complex industry level courses. We do, of course, on inventor if you want to check that out. But these are very much aimed at the top of the market, and it was identified, but there is a position somewhere in between. So with the advent of things like free D printers and home CNC machines, that kind of thing people were able to manufacture small components at home using these kind Afridi princes, things like that. Another result, people wanted to design their own items If I didn't need the expense and complexity of something like side works or inventor just to do simple items. And also, a lot of the wave of files are shared and things. An inventor. It suits kind of big companies. It is. It's not really It wasn't really suited to kind of file sharing. That kind of goes on between home users on the Internet and things like that. So there was a kind of gap in the market for some software for hobby users to create things for various hobbies are various small items on fusion free 60. Basically, does that job very, very well. Okay, so let's have a brief look at it for software. So I've got window open here. I've got a kind of easy model of basic model that I've created. This is, um, if you imagine a circuit about something like a raspberry pi or Arduino. Okay. The idea is that you would create this plastic enclosure. He'd have these up sons, which would match for holes on the circuit, barred, and you would screw your circuit body to these. These openings will be thing for things like USB socket on whatever. It's just a generic one. We're going to learn how to do this in this course, I'm sure you've seen me is available in the shops or maybe people so pin Freddie, print files. But this is pretty simple to make using this software, but it is a perfect example of what you would use fusion 3 64 You go something like a raspberry pi. You want to put it somewhere You want to make an enclosure, you go into fusion. You have a few dimensions that you've measured off the circuit, part of the whole centers, things like that. And you quickly not precip infusion. You send it to you free D printer. And there you go. You haven't to buy anything. Order anything. You can create your own products you can put maybe a logo May could put some fronts of design and there if you want it. But it's just a good example of something that you would use fusion. 3 64 I'm by the way. I'm not gonna keep same fusion free 60. I'll just call it fusion. It's easier. Andi Yeah, it's It's fairly simple, but you could do a lot more complex objects in this infusion. By the way, this is I mean, you will go down the road off, and this is the important thing. When you learn any software, once you've learned it, keep using it and keep kind of pushing your skills of it, pushing your boundaries of it. Don't just make easy things. If you don't have to do something, find out. Gonna push your skills. And that's how you get good at using this kind of software. Just every time you gradually make a bit more difficult. Don't be afraid to do something because you don't have to do it. This course will take you all the basics, but it will also teach you how to find out more. You know how to I can teach everything. All these cost will be hours and hours long and everyone get bought. But you will be confident enough with software that you can use these tools and now have a work to to use your imagination and take your from your imagination onto the screen, which is what a lot of cat is. To be fair, is just being able to take the object and thinking, How best could I model that most objects when you look at them. You can break them down into cubes, cylinders, pipes, tubes. That kind of thing is just a A complex shape is just made out of basic shapes, and that's what freely modeling is. Okay, so let's look a software itself now. Things like auto Cad and inventor. Other said it is. It's very complex in terms of can be complex in terms of a file kind of extracts. You can have parts, some model files, which you have to keep together, and that's because the software is installed on your machine. Okay, now, with fusion, it works differently is it's basically online. You are working online. Your projects are start online. You can share files online, and that makes it so much simpler for hobby and home user because you could just you don't need to worry about. Have I sent somebody evil? The files, a complex inventor assembly, for instance, or solid works you would have to send numerous fails, and they could be too big to email, all that kind of thing. Fusion Mexico. Nice and easy By being online, you do need an account. I'll go for about in the next chapter. It is free, which is probably the best thing about this software. There is a license that allows you and I'm going to say when this course was recorded in too far in 2020 there was a license available, which is a hobby. It's license or something, basically, has anyone who's using it as a hobby. So you're not making money? Not so in the objects to use it for free. But also, if you are a small business, if you are so in your designs, as long as your turnover is under $100,000 a year, it's also free. I'm This is great. This is for anyone like me is being around him a cut industry for years. Remember when we only had really had also count on auto card was something like £4000 British pounds a year. Also, for the latest version, you didn't buy it here live, and you just bought the latest version. So if someone said, Can you do this? I want to pay your £500. It's totally free, which is great, and in the next chapter will go through how you can get it and set it up on your machine. 3. 03 How to get the Fusion 360 Software: Okay. Welcome back. So here I am on the Autodesk website. Now there is a link. So this, um, the color startup license and somebody got a hobbyist license. There is a link and address first, but also just can move things around. So, please, if this link doesn't work, the easiest thing on what I'd recommend is just go to Google on Google Free fusion free 60 startup license or hobby license or something. It will take their. Okay. That's literal. I've just done to get here. If I do, copy this address, try it. But if it does change when you change when you're doing this, cost one. Just google it. Okay? If it's, um, pointless license stops being made available, I will changes costs. If you If you're hearing this, it's still available. Okay. So a moment is saying that is free for individuals with non commercial personal design projects on individuals during home based non commercial manufacturing and fabrication. So, basically, for hobby use, I would also say that includes people who want to just learn the software. So you're not going to sell whatever you making. I wouldn't fault you're going to sell whatever you're designing while you're learning the software. So fusion free 60 for free because all capabilities except the support hopefully don't need because you've got makes you do miss costs. Team collaboration shouldn't made so all this kind of stuff you shouldn't made if you're just learning the software and creating things, Afridi print off for yourself. But what you don't need tough Afridi printer You can send things out. You can design and send them out. It's plenty of people who will Freddie print for you. I recommend get one. If you interest goes freely printed out cheap now, $250 will get used fitting like well, at this point in time, something like an end of free, which is why I used, which is great. So are you a startled If you are a small business now? It was free for businesses generated less than 100 Fallon that the moment saying Apply Andi , fill in the details. I don't know if that's the price you'll get. If you are wanting to do it for your business, All I can say is fill out the farmer, do whatever it's asking at that point in time and see what happens, But for the purposes of learning for yourself on home, use just Google. Fusion hobbyists are fusion for hobbies. Okay, Andi, it should take you to a page where it's free to download for abuse, you will need to create an Autodesk account. I have one office late. It's free to create an account, just like anywhere else. He's giving some details because all your projects are saved online. It needs to know who you are so it can save your projects against your name. So you do need to create account and then get your software for free. OK is a bit difficult in this court, because if you, this kind of menu and auto just move things about, so it's a bit difficult for me to go through the exact address and process today, this is it. I would just google Fusion free 60 hobbyists and go through the process granite Altar Risk account and click on the link Andi. As of today, the software is completely free, so just go for about create your account download install that you do need to install, I said. I said it is based on line, but you do kind of install something just to put a stop in your menu. Okay. And then you will find it under auto desk. And you do get a kind of fusion. 3 60 there. But it is based online. It's not big installed, not like the other software. So go through that process. Let me know if you get any issues. Andi, I'll see you in the next chapter. 4. 04 Navigating and View Commands: Okay, Welcome to Fusion Free 60. So I've put us on to a different machine because of what I use for work. I've got so many kind of I don't know things. It would look different. Service should look, Maher less. I should look the same as yours will, as a new user. Okay, I've got the example. Which is centers. My first project. Um, got example. Box here. So here you will have all the files you've done. OK, um, you can get rid of up to make your screen larger. This white area here, this is your main modeling space. This is a view. You will use your opponent kind of pan around things like that. Okay, I'm just gonna go for some basic menus here. One thing I don't do is go through every single setting, how to change your mouse, the look of your mouths and out to change. Go for every single. But Mr is their sisters. They have done causes like that. It's terrible. You get bored, it's tedious. OK? No one remembers it. No one cares how to change the color of your background before you even know what a software does. No one cares about how you can change the speed of your mouse or anything like that. You just want to learn the basics and get modeling. Okay, I know you do. That's how I feel when I was learning you software. So that's how I teach. I just get you joined modeling as quick as possible. A nail. Introduce these commands as we go. So saying that you do need to know how to move about in some basic things. Okay, so obviously, you move your mouse. Yeah, removes. Okay, let me just I'm just go from my project is sucking so you can see what's happening now. Your mouse wheel. If you scroll your wheel, you'll zoom in and out. Okay? For some reason. Well, I like it so that when I will forward, I zoom in. And when I wheel back as amount to may, that is completely how it should be. That seems natural for some reason. Auto dust thinks we have a way around. You zoom out on it should going. You zoom in on it should go out. I mean, I don't know. You're you may view it differently. All I will say is, if you want to change route, your preferences appear you. Obviously, this won't be my name. It will be your name. If you click up and go to Preferences. You'll see you get all these options. And this is where you can do all those things, like changing colors of your screen, all that stuff. So down here, you have the option. Reverse zoom direction. So I've got it ticked. Okay. When I go forward with the wheel, it zooms in. Now. Apparently, that's reverse. Direction to may Seems like normal, but there we go. Set it. How you want? Whatever Feels natural. Okay, Come up, you scroll. Zoom in and out. So your wheel if you hold your middle wheel down on your mouths A move that is your pun command. Okay, so that's how you drug things around. All right, If you hold down the shift button on the middle, mouse the middle wheel, move your mouse while holding down shift. You'll kind of rotate around. Okay? So you can move your object around like now. These are the main commands I use. So, pan, hold the wheel down, zoom in and out, just wheeling one else, and then hold down shift on the middle wheel. Well, let's use him around orbit. It's called what up? So if those commands, you should be able to get anywhere on your model you want, Okay? And I appreciate it does take a bit off learning just to get good at doing that and getting it to move away. You want? Okay. So feel free. Spend about time, just especially at all. But I'm a zoom getting used to that. Soon you'll be flying around Blois. Okay, But But first, if you've not going experience with Afridi world, I'm doing this kind of thing. It might take a bit of getting used to, so just play about without, okay? You could also you have this cube in the top, right? Andi, if you click on top. Okay, so that's looking down on the model, and you can select the different faces. So left front a man, obviously. But some. And you can click on the corners and get kind of a free T view. When you click top. You can also take up you around, Okay, for some reason, you might think Well, that that's a front view, but actually that's the side of my box. I want to believe from what you can do is go to a view you want. Pull down here and you can say set current view as front, and now it will change that around. Okay, so you come up, but Jet definitely holding down a middle shift key and using that middle button to all but putting it out. I'm in part across. But that's humane kind of view commands, okay? 5. 05 Interface: Okay, so now you know how to move around. Let's have a look at what's going on here. But so, as I said, this is humane. On a window modeling window here, if it's open projects, you know, you've you cube. Okay, You have your standard kind of things, Like safe under file. You could slit open, say, that kind of thing. Just basic things for now. Here, have easy our tour bus. So you will see of the moment we're in Miss Finkel design and with a few different environments. Okay, for now. So you can do simulations do animations, that kind of thing. For now, we're just gonna stick with design. Okay, on In the design environment, you will have these standard tools. So you have salads, surfaces, sheet metal and some tools again for now, just so we can get going, we're just gonna cause fell in solids. We're gonna comes from solid creation, which is just this kind of thing here. Okay, if you do. And if you do specializing sheet metal on you want to get into that, you can Surfaces are a bit more complex. So for now, we're just construct solids. So we have this silver hair which is create. And if you pull down on whatever you say, this arrow can click it and you'll get more commands. If you see someone using something like AutoCAD sometimes depending on the use of it could have a whole load of commands all round with screen. Okay, some people have more commands and screen space on its That's why somebody software consumer, that overwhelming what fusion does is aims to just have the command you use most. Put the top and then all these are available if you need them. But some of them use every now and then once in a blue moon. So just there when you need them. But you don't necessarily need it taking up screen space of us like sketch extrude, that kind of thing. Well, use them all the time so that that you can If there was something, if you do a particular kind of operation and you use a lot off loft commands okay, it is free dot so you can pin it to your toolbar and you can jug it around and you can put it where you want, OK, and you can change all that put ups. Okay, We're getting into customization. You don't need to know. That's basically how this works. Ovaries, more commands and what it shows here. That's all I'm trying to say. Same with So we have create here. We have to modify saying we've modified. There is more available. Assemble, construct, inspecting. So okay, so these are are made for the solid modelling. These are main commands we're gonna be using. Create is, as you would think, create your basic object boxes, surrenders, fears everything is made out of these extrusion sketches. Okay, when we do that all the time, we do sketches, and we extrude them were evolving. We sweep them. So this is how you create your geometry for your free d model? Modify. This is how you change it. So the process would be for something like this. You sketch it under, create you sketch, and you extrude it might create your basic shape. And then you modify that basic shape using these commands. Okay, Next, you're going to assemble. So we have the vase and we have the lid hopes. So have the base. And we have the lit which you assemble together using this one, okay. And you can use this to construct planes. This is Inspector that gives you measuring tools. So if you want to know the link for something, okay. And you can insert things like stick decals, text concert, that kind of images, that kind of thing. So just a very quick overview off this main basic it's all about. That's all I'm going to do as I say. I'm not gonna go through every command like some people doing ball you to tears. We need to get modeling as quick as possible. So that's our basic toolbar. Next, we of this browser. Now, when you all modelling, you will do various things. You will create solid bodies, you'll create sketches and you'll create joints. All that will become second nature to you, but you do need to kind of stall those items. As I said in the introduction, we don't end up with lots of different files that we have to keep in places. We end that we've just one project file and everything is starting that. So this browser is kind of our filing system, if you like for this model service, this model here it's called Box tests. OK, that should've been tested. But it's got boxed us. We have the base which is in red, which is box base. Okay. And we have to let, which is in gray, so you can see that here these top ones belong to the overall follow. Just ignore them from it. But under our box tests, we have the lit on. We can expend that and we have the base and we can expend that we can have a nice simple here. What things? We can see it. Okay, If we were to go to the base and quickly, I it would turn off. We wouldn't see it. That would allow us to do things like add it on model features that will be hidden usual tubs here which allow it to just sit in place. But it is all part of the same fella is all part of this box file. Okay, so this browser window here kind of a filing system for our project. And if you are a bit confused But don't worry, this is an introduction. Just go with it. It will become second nature, and all this will be as we use it as we go, it will just become obvious how you and this is why I like to teach driving spent too much time, Tanya, how everything works. Just teach on the fly because you just learned to use it by using it. Basically, don't. Here we have what they call the timeline. Okay. Oh, design history on what was is it as you go along. So as we made this model, it's as if he was being filmed. It's capturing them. Beach controller, each part of a model. If you like a new convention, go back in time torn. This model started so we can see artist model was made. We started with a sketch of a of a rectangle in two day. Okay, we then extrude of activity into a box will go for extreme soon. So, anyway, this is fusion as you go along. As you were fusion recalls, this kind of timeline was designed history on what that allows you to do. Let so much. So let's so much. And we decided that these holes here, actually, I don't want that whole. I just want not hold there. Okay, so what you can do is go back in time. You never software you would have Tondo under under Ondo until the point where you made that Ammon start again from that point. Which means you have to do what? Read all the geometry did since infusion. You can just go back to the point where you made when? Okay, which is right back here. Probably sketch. So this was our sketch, okay? And you can edit out sketch. We can delete that object. Don't worry about following along hand I've away because I'm just showing you how is Timeline works, and then you can go back to the end of a timeline. So all this work is still being done, but you've got rid of out. Okay, So how you understood how good vices. It's better than just doing undo. Because if you didn't know, you would have lost all the works into that. To redo it, you can go back in time. Eddie. That little command you did maybe last week and then come back to the present on all the other work is still being done, which is brilliant. Okay, this is Parametric modeling. It's this term. You'll hear a lot off, but it is great. It allows you to go back and edit things which he did last week, which may have been wrong, or tech and existing design. And long as you've got the design history within existing designed, you can edit it a lot easier. I'll just tweak it a lot easier without undoing lots of work or delete in lots of other work. Okay, I miss design history. If you get given a model, it may or may not have this design history because you can. If you wanted to kind of OK Thomas model. I don't want anyone changing it. I want it set like this. You can delete that it's on history and your model just becomes us. It is at that point, but if you've got a history of Enya. So that is a history by okay. Again, Don't worry. If you didn't understood what stand what did With a sketch of me extrude. I just wanted you to understand the importance of this here. Down here, we have some view command if you don't, obviously, for using the mouse, which 99 like names that people do. You don't need to kind of be clicking on pan and zoom and things like you just use your mouse wheel. Okay, so that's it. That's all I'm gonna teach about the interface. I'm not gonna go for hours and hours. As I said, we know enough. Now we can start modeling something. So in the next chapter, we're going to start actually modeling something. 6. 06 Basic Modelling Tools 01: Okay, so let's stop modeling now. One thing we need to really know about before we start modeling effectively is the coordinate system that's used no en card. We tend to use something called the X Y coordinate system. Okay, if I just click on box area, you'll see, hopefully make more sense. So let me movinto Afridi of you. Okay, so what we're actually seeing here is our free planes that we can work on and we can planes . But for now, let's look our free main origin planes. Okay? So if you think about freedom, if you think about Freedy Box like this one, appear his view Cube, Really? We have free facing planes. Okay, so you have the top down and you have these to excite planes. You do off the opposite result, which is a bottom, but it it's created in the same kind of you. If that makes sense, So we have X y. I mean, is that so X is in red, which is because think its is a trick of horizontal. Why is vertical and set is kind of coming out off the page If you use so much of a truly piece of Paper X will be along the bottom of the paper. Why would be beside of a paper and said will be coming out towards you. That's your free D. Okay, now I appreciate it may be really confusing to those if not use this equipment system before. If you don't understand that yet, that's perfectly fine. It will become second nature to you just by using it. Okay, So don't worry. If you're not grasping it yet, just follow along. And as we model, it will become obvious. And it would just be intuitive if I try and explain it more. It's just gonna sound a lot more complicated when it needs to bay Andi. The best way to learning card again is just to do it. So if we just start working now and I'll describe what's happening a coordinate system as we go and you'll you'll soon what it's all about. Okay, so what I'm going to do first, I'm going to create a box. Now this create menu here is where we build all our geometry. So this is all our things we begin with. No matter how complicated a model might look, it's created with these simple tools down here. And if you coming from a tin cup background, we have to not think of cut costs than these will be very familiar. The box cylinder sphere. Things like that. Things like fusion and inventive. It don't 10 to use visas much. There's a workflow, which I'll show you, but we're still in there if you want to use him. Okay, so for now, I'm just going to do a simple box. Your model shapes your creations are only as good as your sketches and some important things to know about your sketches, which will make your models work a lot better. We're gonna go to look at these now because these are what you would use to set your sketch . Okay, so if that line is set, horizontal on this line is set to always be going to degrees to it. It will always be vertical again. It's a way off constraining it to be tied into this life. It's all tied into this single line here, so you draw one line on that set, and then everything else is tied back to it. And that's kind of the way you want to be thinking within infusion. Now there's a temptation to just select this right angle on, go around your whole drawing and do all your rights angle's you You could do that. There's nothing wrong with that. Um, but it only ties each line into the previous line. So that line is telling to that line. But onto that one of our own from what you trying to do with inventor is get a kind of baseline and tie. Everything bucks of up. It's just good practice, Um, that we've exactly seven. You probably would never ever know any difference, but I'm just trying to teach Good practice from the start is always good to learn. Good practice from the start. If you're gonna learn a way of doing things, you might as well learn with best practice. Okay, so I have this vertical line now I'm going to set parallel constraints. Would thought okay. It can save you a lot of time. OK, so in general, we've looked at how to create objects. And when we've modified, apart from the Philipson Shumpert's, we've gone back to the original creation and change something. It might have been a diameter that we originally used. If we wanted to change the size of these whole studs, for instance, because these were based on one cutout with a pattern, we could go back to the original on. We could change that. And by the way, I could have used a whole command here. It's just the way I did it, but I could have easily used a whole command. And on a sketch of some dots, it would have been exactly the same. So, yeah, if we wanted to change these go but original and change your size, Andre would old change. But what if we only wanted to change one of them? What if somebody came along says. Well, actually, this one here is slightly bigger for some reason. Well, does a command here called principal and this is something when you when you start using this, you'll use over time. Why wouldn't you just change the shop for Well, in this case, we've only got one edge. If we was to just for the sake of, if we was, if we had Shumpert this edge on message, okay? By two millimeters, okay. I mean, we just wanted to change something here. We could use the press to bulk amount just on that sham footage so you can use on Shumpert on again. You could just change original jumper. But sometimes when you've done lots of work and you've got lots of different edges, you just want to change one single object very easily. This press full command could be great, and it makes model it on the fly so much easier because you could just full things around. One finger would say about it. If you have a complex assembler and you use it a lot than in your history, when it comes to actually changing something, it can get a bit confusing us toe where if I if I wanted to change the damn it, I might go back to the original and it's different. And then you you have all these kind of press pull things in your history, and you need to try and work out which we so do. Go back to the original if you can. If it's something that, for instance, if all these holes have changed emitter I would go back to the original, you wouldn't press pull them all and try and get them. Also use it. I'd say sparingly, but do make use of it because it's a great command. Okay, so that's press pool 29. 29 Shell: So I'm going to start a new zone here. I want to show you this Shell Command. So let's just do a very simple sketch here. Uh, let's make just a box. I'm just gonna make 100 by 100 bucks, OK? But I'm gonna extrude it by one year. So we've got a big queue. Simple. What if it was actually a box as in a container? To put things in Likas, grab a know something like that? Well, you could do a sketch on the top. Well, you could just do a rectangle, make it 80 80. If you want to angle one of these faces, James, the shape of this, you can use draft again. It's easier to show you and try and explain it. So it's going to ask for a plane, okay? It may know that draft command. Okay, So scale now, scale is what you would think. You will select the whole object. And if you wanted to make this half the size and you can just make if you just typing point fire and it will scale the object uniformly, okay, so you don't have to change change change settings. And if it's a very complex thing, you might have passed sticking out here. They're shampoos. It will just scare the whole thing Completely uniform. Just sitting here, um, non uniform. So it maybe you just wanted to scale it in one direction so you could just scale it down there because of the shape of years. It looks like I'm just kind of extruding it back or something. So now you've got what you need. You'll have enough confidence now to be able to even things we haven't gone through right. But if you knew to freedom, mumbling, my advice now would be to look around you in your home, are in your office and just look at random objects and stop thinking, right? How could I make?
