1. Freelancing : How To Design A Professional Flyer Promo Video: Welcome to the sixth part of the Freelance in a rosy quarters. How to design a professional fly in this class. You'll complement our freelance project with a flyer design and do that naturally using Adobe Illustrator. In the process, you'll learn how to design a clean, professionally looking flyer. How to use one simple concept to make all your designs look more attractive and dynamic, but also how to use a little known ways of working with typing. Adobe Illustrator that to make your design process smooth and effective, you know I can't wait for us to start the project. I believe that you will find it easy to follow with the straight to the point and ready to use techniques that will allow you to design flyers independently. My name is David Tyminski and see you inside. 2. 1 How To Create A Multi Purpose Template Freelance Project: in the next few videos. We're going to design this. I called the Multipurpose Flyer, and it's a design that complements our natural natural Atal year project. So we already got the logo on the business cards. We got their website, and now it's time to a design some old school advertising materials, which is well, in this case, this this flyer. So as usual, let me just to break this design for you real quick. So first of all, I got to Well, I said to this will the dimensions of this flyer to 5.5 by 8 48.5 And as you can see this time, I am going to be working in INGE's. So as you can see, we get some Well, I guess I could call it header up here. So we got Well, I didn't go with the logo here because I want the while the viewer to to quickly see what this flyer is about. So I'm hoping that the viewer will actually be well interested in the natural cosmetics, and I've got some. Well, it kind of looks like a menu, but I think they're just emphasizes. It can like compliments This this natural cosmetics, a text right here. And then I got a really, really nice and nice big, big, bold image down here. And after that, I got this body copy to the left. The logo on the well on top left. I got a simple map right here, some showing where the shop is. Actually, with this with this Google map, I got some. I got some items that could be featured down here, and I got some information about the owner of the shop. The purpose of this design is actually not just a design this fly, but also give you some some skills that you can use when designing other flyers. I mean, we're going to use well, we are going to create as some some source, some kind of a design template for ourselves. But we're not going to be bothered with badgering the right distances between columns or anything like that. However, we are going to create columns, but two more for, like, designer purposes. So let me just stop talking and let's actually start designing. So I'm going to press control and to creating new document, and I'm going to call it natural Attell? Yeah, Flyer. Just like so. I'm gonna go with the print profile, but I'm going to set the units two inches, as we already know, and the with I'm gonna set to 5.5 inch and the height to 85 inch. So I'm gonna set to the grease the bleed valued to 1/8 of an inch. It just like So I'm gonna leave for the collar mo to the raster effects. All that. All these things I'm going to set that sent them to default. I'm just gonna press, okay, just like so. So now that we have this other of lead just as we did with the with our business card is I don't Well, I think it's a good idea to create some kind of an inner interbreed or the safe zone. So I'm just gonna create Well, actually, we have a We have a layer already here, but I'm going to name it something like maybe template, because now what I want to do is I want to create not only this safe zone, but also some columns that are going to allow us to create a bit more, very more dynamic design. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna I'm gonna maybe set the black him as my Phil. I'm gonna get rid of the stroke just like so And I'm gonna create a simple rectangle I'm just gonna click so here on my art aboard and I'm gonna I'm gonna enter the width of my of my audible, which is 5.5 inches And I need Teoh. I need to create this kind of intra bleed. And in my case, I'm gonna go with the With standard 1/8 of an inch but 1/8 of an inch plus 1/8 of an inch on both left and the right is going to equal 1/4 of an inch. So that's what I'm going to subtract. So I'm gonna go 5.5 inch I'm gonna go minus. I'm gonna enter comma put toe point in 25 just like so And for for the height I'm gonna go with 8.5 minus coma 25 Just like so And I'm gonna move my gonna center My, my, my Well, my rectangle I'm going to send my rectangle in relation to the art aboard so I'm gonna grab it and I'm going to go to the object bath split into grid. And what I want to do here is I wanna divide my rectangle into an old number off counts. And why is that? I simply want my my my designed to be a bit more dynamic. And if we just went for it for equal, for even the amount of columns, the design will be very static. I mean, the viewer could see everything in just one glance, and we want actual doom to entice the viewer to to to follow the kind of story that we are creating with our design. So honestly, the number here is not that important. As long as you keep it a zit. Keep it odd. I mean, if your design is bigger, you could maybe go with the seven columns or if it's smaller, you can, I guess, go with just three columns, but I'm gonna go with five columns and I'm gonna increase the gutter. But it doesn't have to be too big. We don't have to be that precise. When we are designing, will this kind of template we're not designing for four pixel environmentalists Call it like that. And what we what we are going to get is we're going to get to this kind of a ah, well column system. Let's call it Let's call it like that. I'm just gonna breast OK. And now what I what I am going to do is I'm going to place my elements within within these columns. But I'm going to I'm going to make span like if I wanna have, like, objects side by side, I'm going to spend well a portion off them. I'm going to spend them across three columns and the other portion I'm going to spend across two columns because I want I want the designed to be not that symmetrical. I wanted to be more dynamic, So we will start at in our our elements in the next video 3. 2 How To Add The Header: Now that we got our template ready, let's actually start adding the needed the proper elements. So I'm gonna go to my layers pound right here. I'm gonna create a new layer that I'm going to call maybe, um, header. Just like so. And I'm also going to create a background for myself, and I'm gonna put it on a separate layer. I'm gonna creating new layer. Call it BG for short. And I'm quickly going to create a rectangle that is going to span is going to cover the whole bleed just like so whole bleed area. And I'm gonna I'm gonna choose this great color just like that. But for now, I think that I'm going to turn on the visibility of the Bagram player off. Okay, so what I will do right now is I want to add that at the well, the main tax to here in my hatter. But before I do that, maybe, just so you see everything, but I'm going to decrease the opacity of my template to something like 20%. Maybe I'll just quickly change its color to maybe this green color. Why not? Okay, so I'm gonna know. Add the text here on top. So I'm gonna grab the type tool. I'm gonna move on to the proper layer and let me just zoom in real close, and I'm just gonna type in, um, natural custom attics, and I'm going to use the farm. That is, that is the main fund in our logo, which, as you probably remember, is called play for display. Just like so I'm going to set it to regular, But I think that I'm going to increase its value. Maybe, Well, maybe not to 22 18. And I'm gonna change the collar to green, just like so Now I'm gonna move it down here to somewhere here. Total snaps with my With my well, well, my saves all night template. As we already know, In order to be completely certain that we are aligning everything properly, it's best to dynamically change our text into into outlines. So I'm gonna go to the effect menu, bath, outline, object, just like so And now I'm going to align mile line my text in relation to the art boards. I'm going to center it just like so Now if you think that this 1/8 of an inch is not enough . This the distance is not enough. We could move this natural cosmetics text down, so I'm going to double click on the selection tool and I'm gonna I'm gonna move it. I'm not gonna move horizontally, but I'm gonna move it vertically by another 1/8 of an end. So I'm gonna type in a one. What? Come out 1 to 5. Just like so I'm gonna move it. Well, right now, our text is moved by a full quarter full quarter of an inch. So if I'm not just bring my background back, just like so you you can start well to see how our however header is going to is going to look like, so I'm gonna temporarily turn it off. And now I will create. Let me just refer back to the original I'm going to create on this. This is a bar right here with these with these pieces of text. So I'm gonna grab the rectangle tool, and I'm gonna create a rectal It is going to span from from this left bleed part to the right bleed, just like so I'm gonna give it this white color. Well, this very very, very, very off white color. And I'm gonna maybe give it some nice border, but I'm gonna make it significantly smaller. And by the way, I'm gonna show you a nice little trick right now. If you want to just get to, like, a fraction of a point on by clicking on this stroke White Arrow simply hold on the control or the command key, so get, like, maybe half a point, some some changing on decreasing in this case, the size of my stroke. Bye bye. 11 1/10 of a point increment. So let me see what it will look like. I think that's even too much. Maybe even maybe even smaller than that. I just I wanted to be really, really, really solid. I think there's going to be OK, so I'm gonna move it just a bit up and I'm gonna move this guy down by 1/8 of an inch. Just like so. And all that's left to do is to simply start typing in all these all these pieces of text. So I'm just gonna grab the type toe. I'm gonna collect somewhere here, and I'm gonna type in Echo Echo. He's just like so I'm going to change the color of this text to this dark gray color and I'm gonna change the front two lotto, and I think I'm gonna make it. Let's see a regular and I'm gonna make it all caps just like someone. Of course, I think that this should be smaller, maybe even eight points. And let's put somewhere here and now all that's left to do is to add to the other pieces off decks I'm gonna duplicated to the right. Grab the text tool and I'm going to type in. I believe it. Waas natural. So yeah, it was natural soaps. I think it was. I think it was natural soaps. Yes. So I'm gonna move this guy to the right. I'm gonna clothing to the right, and I'm gonna type in dietary supplements, just like so. No, if you think if you think that maybe we are, we don't have enough contrast between these these pieces of tax and maybe the background Well, you can make it. You can make it darker. I wouldn't go all the way to black And because our client wanted to one in shades of gray and the client likes Gray, so I probably would go with something that is Well, there is dark, dark gray. But I'm gonna leave it up to you. I'm going to stay with this great color, just like so. So the last thing to do would be to take care of these guys to take care of the positioning of the off these guys First, I'm gonna go to the effect that I'm gonna apply outline, object, just like so I'm gonna make sure that my equities is our key object. I'm gonna go to the line and let's distribute these guys. Maybe just a bit more like have an inch half in and should be fine. But, you know, maybe you could actually experiment with the front. Wait, let's go with light here, Light Will will make this fund just a bit lighter, so I think it might actually look a bit better. So now I'm going to align these guys vertically in relation to our background, which I'm going to make a key object by clicking on it while it's being while it's being selected and I'm going to I'm going. Teoh will vertically aligned them to the center and Now I can grab all these guys, I'm gonna group them. And this time I'm going to align them in relation to my art. Bored? I'm going to simply put them in the center, just like Okay, so now I'm just going to quickly bring back my background. And as you can see, I made a terrible mistake with our with this guy with this rectangle right here. It has the same feel as as our main background. And we want to have some kind of a distinction between these two. So I'm just gonna grab it again, and I'm going to give it a plain white collar, just like social. Now it looks it looks properly. So in the next video, we're actually going to add our our big, bold image. This guy right here and we will use the clipping mask for that. So that's something that you're interested in. Just keep watching 4. 3 How To Add The Main Image: in this video, we're going to add our main image. So I'm gonna create a new layer and I'm gonna name it, Maybe photo just for the sake of variety. Not everything has to be an image. It can be a photo. Why not? At what I want to do right now is they want to create a big, big rectangle. So I'm gonna grab this rectangle tool, and I'm going to spend my rectangle across from this bleed right here to this bleed right here. Now, the size of this off this rectangle that is going to be a placeholder for image is actually up to you will have to decide how big. Well, at least in terms of its height, it has to be. It will depend on how much tax you are going to put in down here on some additional information. And of course, we'll have to take the world the whole composition, but also well, kind of a crop in Well, because we are going to be simulating the crop tool with our clipping mask A here, so you'll have to take that into consideration as well. So I'm gonna move my rectangle down and I'm going to move a 12 not horizontally. I'm gonna move it to vertically Now. That's so like 1/8 of an inch just like so and know what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go to file menu place and I'm going to navigate to this image, and it's going to be way too big. That's what I thought. And I'm gonna decrease its size, impressing them the by the way, the sk and then enter on my keyboard to make this guy smaller. I think that I'm gonna go all the way down to 10% just like so. And of course, our image has to be behind the object that we are going to be clipping it with. So I'm gonna move it to move it all the way to the back. I'm going to select it. I'm gonna shift click on this rectangle to select him to select as well. And I'm gonna use um I'm going to use the control seven shortcut on my key word to create the clipping mask. Just like so Now, of course, we can play around with the positioning of our of our and photo, and so I'm just simply going, Teoh, Click on it and I'm gonna goto added contents. And now I'm able to move this guy around just like so. If you want, you can increase or decrease. If you need it size just like that, I think I'm gonna go with something like that. And by the way, it wouldn't be one of my videos if I didn't want to show you some. Another little a trip that I think is little known and it's not well, at least it's not being shown too often. If you want Teoh, if you want to increase the size of your clipping mask, you might be tempted to just click on it and then just grab a grab your your photo. But as you can see, we are distorting our whole image. So what if we only want Teoh change the size of the container off the clipping element that is, that is clicking our image. While the easiest way to do this is to just click on your image than click on this added contents and then kill it back on this ad clipping path option. And now if I move my well, this a clipping element up you can see that I'm actually simulating the corrupt. And just like so, if you need to just the size of your of your crop in element, you can do it like that. So again I would click on this guy and then click on the edit contents and then back on the added clipping path. And now I can easily, easily change this clip in a clipping mask, just like so. But that's not what I want to do. I think I'm gonna leave it, leave it just like that. So in the next video, we're actually going to start creating Start adding that the text down here and we are going to see the real benefits off our of our template of our five. Colin. Great. Let's call it like that. So that's something that you're interested in. Just keep watching 5. 4How To Add The Main Text: in this video, we're going to start adding the tax to to our flyer. But first, I'm gonna just grab where I'm quickly going to grab the logo. So let me just borrow it from my original design. I'm gonna I'm gonna simply copied and I'm gonna creating new layer. And I am going to name it, uh, uncle name and copy, Just like so I'm gonna turn the visibility of the background layer off just like that. I'm going. I'm going to base my my logo just like that. I'm going to position its summer here, and I think I'm gonna make it just a bit bigger. So it's a bit more visible, and I'm going to move it to down and again. I'm gonna move it only vertically by 1 25 1/8 of an inch, Actually, just like so Now what we need is we need to add the well, the taxed to our to our flyer. Right. So let me just quickly go to alarm Epsom site and borrow some Lauren Ipsum text. Okay? I am back from the Learn Ibsen site, and I I got some alarm ipsum text carpet into my clipboard. What I want to do right now is I want to create a text, um, text friends. I'm going to click somewhere here, and I am going to spend it across Onley. These three columns, maybe just a bit more. Just something like that. And I'm going to pay Smiler makes some just like so. Of course I don't want these guys to be all caps, and I think I'm gonna go with the regular font font. Wait, and I'm gonna bring back the background, just like so. And maybe I will increase the phone size to something like nine. I'm going to change its color to maybe this dark red color and I'm going to increase the line height to let's go with, um 12. Let's see that. Maybe even 13. Let's see what is going to look like. I think it's going to look OK now what I want to do is I want to create some some paragraphs I'm gonna place my cursor is somewhere here, and I'm gonna press enter once, and I'm gonna delete once, Aziz. Well, and maybe I'm gonna press enter to well, somewhere here, just like so. So now what? I want to do is I want to go to that to the paragraph panel right here. And I'm gonna just this this space after paragraph option. So I'm simply going to increase the space where I where I want my my paragraphs, actually to be to be more visible to maybe something like six six would be fine. Now, if you want, you can also play around with these and justification options. So let's exactly see what this option is going to What is going to give us. And also, you can play around with the hyphenation option if you want, but I guess it will depend on, well, your country or the region that you're living in if you are going to be using the hyphenation or not, because I know that in some some countries that they don't tend to use the hyphenation. So I got my text, I got my text created, so I think that it would be a good idea to may be repositioned ever so slightly. So I'm gonna move it just about it up. So it touches my logo right here. I'm gonna move there, move it down. But again, 1/8 of an inch So that's what I'm going to type and I'm gonna go, OK, just like so. And as we can see, we got this text touching. Well, Spain actually Onley across these three columns because the other elements of our design that are going to go to the right and are gonna be smaller and this will make our our design a bit more a bit more dynamic. But the nice thing to do would be to populate maybe this bottom part of our of our design with some that with some more information about the products that our client is selling. So we are going to do that in the next video. 6. 5 How To Create Lists: in this year, we're going to add some some products that we are go that that our client is selling and we're going Teoh present it as a list of features or list of items. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna Gramp the type tool, and I'm going to create an area type that is going to span across all these three columns just like so. And I'm going to start typing in something like feature item. I know it's going to be be really, really generic, but I want to show you more the council and this one little a nice technique, but you can use instead of just, you know, I don't want you to watch me coming up with with names of the products. So I'm gonna select this guy. I'm gonna give it a proper color, maybe as I go, just like so. But of course I wanted to have a great film, not at the stroke, just like so. And I'm going to go to the type the option I'm going to go to change case and I think I'm gonna make a title case just like so. So what? I wanted to write and I was I want to go wrap this guy. I don't want to add multiple copies of it, so I'm simply going to go ahead and press enter, and then I'm gonna base this guy again, again, again and again and again and again and again and again. And I can I know that you can see all these feature items because I need to extend my extend my area type, just like so. What I want to have right now is they wanna have to list sitting next to each other. So with this, with this area type selected, I'm going to go to type menu area type options, and I'm going to increase the number of the columns to to let me just turn the preview preview on. And maybe I'm going to decrease the gutter ever so slightly. I think I can go. I can go smaller than that. Sounds simply going to press okay and watch now how this well things column of tax is going to change as soon as I simply may get smaller. As you can see, these items are simply jumping in, jumping in, and it's a place where they need to go, just like so. Of course, if you think that they are being will spread too far out, we could go to the type menu area type options. And actually, if I just increase the number of columns to three, I am actually going to move my feature feature item in, well, feature item right column at a bit more to the left. So this is how you can easily create a list of feature items. Let me maybe just moved them just a bit down. And the last thing to do he would be to just create a simple, simple line that would go. It will span something like that. I'm gonna give it 1.21 point stroke, proper gray color and the, by the way, if you want Teoh like manipulate maybe the distances between these separate items well over need to do is to go to the character of panel and play around with the leading. So if I'm not just going to decrease the leading, you can see that I am making the distances between thes guys small. But also I am bringing, bringing some items from the right column to the left called. So that's something that you need to take into consideration when playing around that. So I think I'm going to go with just 10 just like so. And I'm gonna bring these guys down just like that. And maybe I'm gonna move this line just a bit down, and maybe I will decrease its weight to half a point. Half a point should be fine. So I'm gonna bring my background back just like so. And there you go, Like of the list of my feature items created off course. The looks of this of this feature item list would depend on how much items you have or how much tax you have right here. So we could to go, like maybe with three columns of just two lines or maybe four columns with just one line. I mean, it will all depend on how much information you want to you want to contain with the within this area. So the next thing to do would be to add the map on the right and some author information here on the bottom bottom, right in the bottom, right part of our flyer. So that's something that you're interested in. Just keep watching 7. 6 How To Add The Google Map: Before I create my sidebar on where I'm going to paste in the map and some author info or the shop owner info, I'm going to create a new layer. So I'm gonna name the new layer sidebar just like that. I'm gonna turn that the visibility of the Bagram player off. And I think I'm going to simply create a rectangle that is going to span across thes two columns, and it's going to be as well it's going to start with this logo and it's going to go down here. Um, I think that this should be fine. And actually, this rectangle is going to be container for my Google map. So what I would do right now is simply a type. I would simply type the address off the shop in into Google maps, take a screenshot of that off that address and simply pasted in. And so I'm going to take a screen a quick, quick screen shot, and then I'm going to to Barrow to to come back here and pasting an inside illustrator. Okay, so I am back in. Illustrator, I got my I got my will screenshot. I took the screen shelter off the map that I chose. So I'm simply going to baste it in just like so. And of course I am going to make it smaller. Something like 30% should dio. And of course, what we need to do is going to simply create a clipping mask. So I'm going to bring this guy beneath about below my my rectangle I'm gonna shift click on it. Thio added to my selection and I'm gonna press control seven just like so So you can see that we got now our map map created. And if I bring back our will, our background, this is what it will look like. And if you think that maybe this tax is a bit too close to the map, you can you can simply make it just a bit smaller if you want. Just remember to make this guy well, smaller to to to bring it to the left. Aziz. Well, just like so. So the next thing to do would be to simply at the information about about the shop owner and some and some contact information for for the for the shop itself. So we are going to do that in the next video 8. 7 How To Finish The Freelance Design : in this video, we're going to create Theo information about the shop owner. So we're going to we're going to start by, well, turning the visibility of the background off. And I'm gonna create another rectangle that is going to be a placeholder for for the image . So I'm going to create well, rectangle, it is going to span across this one a column just like so. And I'm gonna go to the file menu place and I'm going to navigate to the folder where I keep my image and I'm going to place this one right here and again. It's way to bake. I'm gonna make it some mauler and this should be fine. And of course I'm going to bring it beneath my beneath my beneath my will rectangle I'm going to add it to my selection and created clipping mask just like so and again it's ah, it's a matter of just making making the adjustments in terms of height and the position in you can put it on the way you please, and I'm going to make it look something like that. This should be fine. And the last thing to do here, what would be to simply type in the typing, all the contact information down here. So I'm simply going Teoh, click somewhere here and just type in the Jane John son, just like so I'm going to go to type change case and maybe I'm gonna go with opera case just like so And maybe let me just print this will last name down just like that. I'm gonna move it to the left to somewhere here. I'm going to give it a proper color, just like so. I'm gonna make sure that it's the typeface is set to two lotto, just like so. And the last thing to do would be to simply add to some contact information. But I don't think that you want to look at me clicking or coming up with with some some fake fake data here. So let me just quickly borrow these basic pieces off text, just like some. So I'm going to copy them, based them in real quick, just like so I'm gonna maybe moved is going just a bit up And this guy just a bit up as well, just like so and maybe maybe just a bit up. I'm gonna maybe make it. Make it eight. And these guys, I'm gonna maybe make them six, just like so I'm gonna change the the line Heights or the leading just a bit too. Maybe maybe eight.
