About This Class

Finding your lettering style can be really challenging. Like do you just stick with the style of those practice sheets you've tried? But then again you also don't want to just copy someone else's style. So how do you even go about finding your style. In this class, I break down a variety of different lettering style elements that you can choose from, play with, and combine to help you discover your lettering style. 

We'll look at elements such as

  • Level vs Bounce lettering
  • Spacing of the letters
  • Connection of the letters
  • Flourishes
  • Lettering Size
  • Looped vs straight letters
  • Stroke size
  • Mixing in print letters
  • Adding in designs

After seeing these different elements, you will be able to try them out in your own lettering practice and see which element styles resonate with you!

For this class, you can either experiment with your lettering style digitally on the iPad with the app Procreate; or you can also experiment with these elements with a brush pen and paper!

1. Introduction: Hello and welcome to finding your hand lettering style. My name is Alicia, and I am a hand lettering abstract artist. In this class, I will be showing you a variety of different elements that you can play with to help. You kind of figure out what your style is, or some ways to very up your style. If you're creating a piece and want some variety for this class, you could either do this on procreate like I'm showing you. Or you could also easily do this on paper with a brush pen. By the end of this class, I hope you're able to find some inspiration. And some ideas. Could you started on playing with your style? All right, let's get started. 2. Level vs Bounce: in this lesson, we're going to play around with making our lettering level and even versus having our letters have more of abouts. So when the lettering is level, there are consistent heights, and consistent bottoms teach water. So the tops of the taller letters are at the same place in the shorter letters come to that middle line, whereas with the bounce lettering, as you can see, it's a lot more varied, like some Michael taller than the tall letters typically do. Summer Don't reach the bottom. Some go deeper right there. It doesn't touch the bottom. The sea is smaller than some of the other similar height letters using each style could give a different feel. - So in autumn, tall order stays to that top line. And then all of those other lower case sorts of waters only come to the middle line and the bottoms. They all touch the bottom of that line and don't go below it. Now I'm gonna do the same word, but with a balance sort of feel. So I varied the height of the letters where they whether they touch the bottom or not. So these two letters, normally they would touch the bottom at the same at the same place. But now there are different heights. I very the height of my m to give it a little more style. It doesn't touch the bottom. There is well, as the end also does not touch the bottom. So it just is another element You can vary. 3. Spacing: in this Lawson. We will be looking at thes spacing over ladders, whether they're close together or space to parked further. And now something important to know about spacing is making sure that it's consistent, so I'll just give a quick example in this example. They're not consistent. Some letters air closer in summer further way, and it just doesn't quite look balanced. So that's something to consider when you are adding spacing, tear lettering. Right now, we'll do a quick example. Here's autumn close together, and now I'll do the same word, but more spread out. And so, as you concede, the's spacing of the word can change can change like the feeling of the word. This one's kind of close together in this one's kind of bouncy and free and loose. You can use this element to change your lettering 4. Letter Connection: Another thing you can vary are the connections between the letters, so you could make each letter connect to the next one, or you could have some letters drop and not be directly connected to the next letter. So in this example, every letter is connected to the next letter, and I'm gonna do the same word. But I'm gonna drop some of those Sutter's. So I have dropped the tea that are l and R at the end, and it could just kind of give it a little bit of variety. Maybe you don't like the way some letters connect. So adding a drop letter maybe gives it a style you like better again. It's another element that you can play with and very been used to vary your lettering. 5. Flourishes: You can also play around with adding flourishes to your lettering. You can decide whether you prefer the letters to be more simple or whether you want thes flourishes at the entrance of your letters. Coming off the bottom you could like. I showed the drop letters. You could add a flourish onto the drop in the entrance of a letter. So no going to do an example where this first word will not have any flourishes. Very simple. Clean. You can also choose to vary the amount of flourishes you would like in your word. Maybe you just want to add a couple. Maybe you want to add a bunch to make it really fancy. You get to play around with that. So this one has. I just put in a whole bunch of different flourishes. You could make it simpler, like I said, and erase. Some of them were Redux. So maybe I felt like this l was a little too much, so I just wanted get rid of that entrance flourish. Flushes can be a fun way to add some emphasis, or some pop to your word, or you can choose to keep your lottery more simple. 6. Size: Another element you can play with is the size of your lettering. You could have lettering. That's a lot smaller, where he could have lettering that's large and takes up a lot of space. And so in this one, I'm not as much talking about the stroke sighs. I'm more talking about the actual size of the words as a whole. Okay, right now, they're the same word larger. And what's great about size is that you could, in one piece, vary the size to show emphasis on different words. But I think you will notice that you have a preference for writing maybe small, maybe a little bit in the middle or larger. I tend to write on the middle or smaller size lettering, and so, as you can see, one is clearly larger than the other, and that's something you can experiment with. 7. Straight vs Looped: in this lesson, we're gonna be looking at the structure of the letters, whether they're straight or their looped. And so what I mean is, in these, you can see they're just straight lines down. Whereas a loop might look something more like that. That's all of those Air Street. And as you can see here, each of these letters have a loop. That would be a simple Oh, for as though below it has the loop at the top, same with the P as well as the d. All right, so now I'm going to show you again how this would look with the word bottom. So, as you can see, there are not really any loops in these letters. They're all just straight, and I'm gonna do the same word. But this time I'm gonna add loops to as many letters as it applies to. Yes, you can see I don't normally do loop, so it's a little more a little trickier for me. So I did a little bit of a loop in the top of each of those letters. And this is another place where you can experiment with your lettering style 8. Stroke Size: in this lesson, we're going to look at the stroke of the letters so we can vary the thickness of that stroke to have thick lines thin or model line, where the stroke size is even all the way across. The thick strokes are a lot more dramatic between the thick down stroke and the thin upstroke right . Next, I will do the thinner stroke. So with a thinner stroke, there isn't as much of a difference between the thicker down stroke in the thinner upstroke . They're a lot closer in size, but there is still a difference. So, like I said, the slightly thicker down stroke and the slightly thin upstroke. Now I'm gonna go to Monoline, which means that there is no difference in the stroke size in the down and up strokes. It's even all the way through the word or all the way through the stroke. So there's the same width at every point in the work. You can experiment to see which stroke sizes you like best 9. Mixing in Print Letters: in this lesson will be experimenting with mixing in print or hand writing like letters within our calligraphy or are him lettering? All right, so I'm gonna start with the word hope in doing the letters more of a traditional lettering style. And so now I'm gonna switch it up and mix in more print letters, so may each is a little bit more so in this one, the letters look more like print style, and this one I glittered are that's more like a printer hand written style, so mixing in different styles of letters can also create a different visual appeal to your writing. 10. Adding in Designs: in this lesson, we're gonna be looking at adding in little designs in tor lettering. So in the top example, it's just plain. There's no little designs or extra illustrations in the lettering. Now I'm gonna write the same word, but this time it would include some little flower east our designs. It could be a little bit trickier to do because you have to figure out how to go around the design. But it could be a fun way to add some emphasis or variety to a piece to draw attention to it, so that's something fun to play with. 11. 10 Different Ways Challenge: So in this lesson, we have a little bit of a challenge to letter a specific letter in 10 different weights. I know for me, I get used to doing it in a certain way. And so trying to do it in 10 different ways really, really challenges me. So you could include both upper case and lower case. Or if you really wanted to challenge yourself, you could choose, maybe just lower case you could play with the flourish of the letter, maybe making it more straight. Try and do as many as you can off the top of your head first. And then if you find that you're really struggling, then do maybe a quick Google or Pinterest search help kind of give you some more ideas. - All right, so here are a bunch of different ways that I could possibly do the letter each 12. Project: thank you so much for joining me. I really hope that through these lessons you've seen a variety of different elements that you can play around with and combine in different ways to create a lettering style that feels like it's your own. And so the project for this class is to take a word that you like to write or just a random word, and to experiment with each of the styles or sets of styles and kind of see which one you prefer. Do you prefer the level lettering? Do you prefer the bounce lettering and just see what feels natural for you? I've also created a cheat sheet that you can refer to that has all of the different elements that I've shown you. You confined that as an attachment in the project tab, and when you finish experimenting with all your styles, I'd love it if you take a picture or a savior image and upload that to the Project tab, and you may also discover that maybe you might not like a certain style as much. Or maybe you just want to use that on certain occasions to emphasize certain words you're not stuck with the style. You can totally evolve your style over time. Another little challenge, if you want, is to try the lettering a letter in 10 different ways that can really push you and challenge you to, um, change the way you do each letter itself.
