1. Class Introduction - Split Screens In Final Cut Pro X: hi, thanks to check out my skill share class on creating split screens in final Cut Pro 10. In these two classes, we could be having a look at how we create a basic split screen using re scaling the crop tools on all the tools that you'll need for creating a basic two or four up split screen or a customized split screen. And then we're gonna go on to have a look how we create an advance split screen where we can create diagonal lines. We can also look how we can animate different elements of the split screen to create some manual split screen transitions. I hope you sign up this class. It's a really great tutorial for any level of final cut pro 10 user on. I'll see you in class. 2. Basic Split Screen using Crop & Position: Okay, so we're here in final couple attend. We're gonna have a look at how we create a split screen here with multiple layers. Were gonna how have a look at how we can use cropping and reciting to get some multiple screens going on within already here. So we'll just have a look at the piece of footage that we're working with. Got this retro skateboarding, this footage and where going to come up. And then somewhere in this spin, we're gonna move to, ah, split screen and look at how that works. Okay? So the first thing we're gonna do is just hide some of these other windows in final cup. So first of all, we're gonna have the libraries and in the browser so that we can really see clearly what's going on. And then also, we're gonna end up with a few layers here within our timeline. So we're gonna just resize the clip height. We need to see the I thought. Now the clips. Okay, so we'll drop those right now so that we can see two or three different layers there as we're working. Okay. All right. So the first thing we're gonna do is break the clip. So there's a couple of different ways of doing this. One is to come to a a point in the timeline and then come to our later on. We can use that on slice right through this clip. OK, the other way of doing it that Misty's a short cut. So if we come to a point in the clip and then use command and B, that will slice the clip and you can see now five. Got the selection tool highlighted here. I can select those two clips independently. Okay, so we wanna have this kind of fluid motion between the clip, so we're not gonna move these clips anywhere in time. We're going to kind of keep them, lay it up so that the skateboarding movies continuous even though we're gonna move toe multiple screens, which is gonna give quite a nice effect. But the first thing we want to do is just click on this original flip. We're gonna re scale it. So that's what we're going to use is the transform till across here on the left. And once we've selected that, we've got the clip highlighted. We can come in and we can transform this up. Okay. Now, one thing I sometimes like to do when I'm transforming is just zoom out. So I can really have a bit more control over where I'm playing these handles outside of the screen. So see the view level. Is that 4% here? I'm just gonna come down Teoh 25% so that when I drag these handles shows me. But what? These house? I'm moving it. So we want to make sure that when we end up here, we have a much of the kind of skateboarder get the shot as possible. So I'm just gonna about this up a little bit, all right? That's pretty good. Yes, we were coming to this point. Okay, so now it's nice. That means we've, uh we can click down across here on the top, right? It's nice. It's We can actually see that. We feel the screens. We've got rid of some of this detail from the old VHS video format that's been used to fill this or the film. This have. And we've just got this nice kind of clean edged image. Okay, so we'll come to the second clip that we've made here in a split. Okay? And we're gonna use a short cut key on the keyboard is we're gonna hold down the R key and just drag that clip up. OK, now, one thing I've got turned on here, which is important just to make sure that we keep things lined up is snapping. So across here on the right, you can see my snapping, except to blue. And that means that when I'm dragging these clips around, you can see that and they're starting at the same point. If we want to see the clip below this clip that we have now off the previous clip, we can write, flipped and then just go to disable that clip and you can see that they're both. And exactly it's known position will use that a little bit as we move on just to kind of play around with things. Okay, so let's credit first split screen. So the first thing we're gonna do is take this top clip on. We're going to enlarge a bit, okay? And then underneath the transform tool here, we have some other options for transforming, cropping and distorting. We're going to use the crop top. Okay, so we're gonna crop this from the right hand side. You'll start to see We can actually see the clip below it. So we're gonna crop this down and then jumped back to the transform. So of move this to the right here. Okay? So you can see we're already ending up with two video last night. Okay, we get it's kind of nice effect where it splits. Okay, so let's jump to the lay behind, okay? And we're gonna scale this one down. Okay? So it's got it down, and then we'll just move him across today inside here. So it's still see Nice amount off this video footage, and then we'll use the crop tool just to tidy up some of these edges that we can see here. Okay, Okay. Let's come down to a timeline and just change it to the click display option. And that will make our last even smaller so that when we're actually practice up, So actually, the only things will be able to see multiple layers as we kind of go along. So we've got these two layers now, and you can see there nice and in sync as we move through that. Okay, lets grab one more. So hold on the l key again and drive us up when we could just keep moving on repeating this as we live along. So go back to transform. Move this guy over here. And what you can see here is that the layers on top here are obscuring the layers behind. Okay, so it's stacking in the same kind of waiter. Something like photo shop stacked if, you know, work with layers a lot for okay. And we're gonna zoom right in on this one. Okay? On the skateboard. I would just say that spin come a little bit more to the right here. So get a bit more that spinning there. Okay, we can move this across. Okay? And sometimes when we're working here now we want to zoom right in. I was zoomed in. You can see that. We can see this. Oh, control on the right allows us to move around nicely in the clip. And really, what I'm looking to do here with to transform until selected. So I've jumping back to transform on the left. There is just to make sure that the edge of this video. It's nice and lined up. Yes, we got a nice crisp inch. No, they will jump back to fit and zoom in again. And I'm just gonna adjust this right edge so that it matches up nicely. Come across to here. Grab the crop again on just drive this corner out. I can't actually, that we're gonna have to move this across, okay? They come back here and then with the crop till just potus edge out this way. Okay, so we reached the edge on the other side, which is Wiley's. Now, I got to come in and move things around a little bit. Okay, let's go back to fit. And you can say, if we click down, we've now got this nice and play through right? Spins on you get everything nice and in sync. Okay? And I think when we learned and then I think when we land back here, we're gonna go back to the full screen. Okay? So if we hold these two clips, fax, I'm just jumping to the end of those clips and bring her back, and they will select the bottom clipper, just his command, and be again to break that player will come here. Okay. And then if we go to window on show Inspector with this clip selected, we'll go to our video, and you can see and hear that we've got more control. Uh, ask per pixel off the position on the rotation and you can see you've also got this reset button here, which is really useful. So we've split our screen. We've come here, and now we're going to reset back to the original screen. Okay, so we've reset the original properties now. Actually, if you remember, we crop this up so that it would fill the screen. Okay, So actually want to come back, rather to be original set up. We want to come to this. Cropped off, zoomed in, set up. Okay, so if we grab this clip, let's head it and copy and then come here. We could go to edit and use this function. Paste attributes. Know what this is going to do? Spring up a window which will allow us to paste audio levels, for instance, audio effects. But also the video at TriC. It's OK. And you can see here that we've got transform options set up here, so we've got position, scale, and then we've also got crops it up here. Okay, So if we paste these three attributes that we've changed in this first clip, we'll get exactly the same set up. This is a really nice feature. We can do this on more than one clip at the same time on this copy and paste attributes. But this you can see now because the real nice fit screen. So what's in space? It ahead to fill. We're gonna work on that in a sec. And then we jumped back to this in the same positions are it's playing out through Okay. All right, that's not one more flippant here, so we'll grab spot, man, bring him up to the top Crap. Transforms ho are Then just enlarge this, okay? And what we'll do here is just used the fact that we've got these multiple layers to, and I must kind of dropped that behind those other clips. Okay, because this is the same length. I can drop this onto the timeline and then drop the's back up. Just a I could drop this onto the timeline, and then we can pull these other clips across them because They're exactly the same length and we've got snapping turned on. We can kind of move these around like a deck of cards until we've got them in the right order. Can see them highlighted as we kind of knew through. Okay, so I'm just moving these around, shuffling around, and now you can see that we've got a nice crispy edges. There are click done and we can. It's true, and we end up with this nice split screen with crops and zooms. We'll set up there jumping back to the original size. The footage. Okay, so that's a quick intro. Advanced Split Screen with Animation: Okay, so here, in final cut, we're gonna have a look at how we do in advance split screen, and we're gonna be using the drawer mask tool in order to do this. So I've got a stack of three layers here, and I'm gonna look at how I can add some different shapes to a split screens, or rather than just a straight four block split screen or split screen, half and half. Look how we cannot add some angles into that. And then also how we can animate that split screen coming on and off the screen. So I'm gonna grab it's draw mask options. So you're looking in your video effects in the masks options here, or you can type in a search for draw mask and it will pop up there so we'll drag this across to our clip on. Then once we've got this set up on our clip will get this option to add a control point. So basically here now we can click with the busy. It'll from Dr Dots and add control points for our mask. Okay, so we've created split screen. We've created an angle border there on. We can then go in and adjust those points as we wish to edit and eventually to animate those points. So if we now have a look a what we could do next with this? We'll look at how we can animate the position of this mask so that we can get the screen to kind of open up. And this is gonna introduce a nice, neat tricks. I'm just shifting clicking to select both those masked points. Now, what I want to do is I want to get the mask on the layer below to match up exactly with this mask. So the way I'm going to do that is by using another cool function in final cut pro 10 which is come back here to copy a clip on the timeline. So basically, go to edit copy, click on the clip below, and then go to edit paste attributes. Now, what this is going to allow us to do is to pace that draw mask effect. Okay, on those points from my original mass will be in exactly the same spot. Okay, so if we just turn off this bottom clip by right clicking on deciding that clipper by tapping the you can see we've got these two top most clips in exactly the same spot. Okay, now I'm gonna click on their second clip, the bottom here. So now I'm controlling the mask points of that clip, and what I'm gonna do is click and shift and click on both those points and then dragged these points back to the left. Okay, so now on these top two layers, I've got to perfectly joined clips, Okay? That we can then animates to reveal the bottom layer. Okay. So to turn this layer back on by right, clicking on going to enable okay on gonna click on my top lip. Okay. Come up to my video options up here on, then I'm gonna go into transforms, and we're going to animate and transform the position. So in order to do this, we want a first ad a key frame for this at the beginning. Okay, So I'm gonna come in to my position here and had a key frame, okay? And then I'm gonna come halfway through my clip here to run out 1 29 on add in another key frame. Or actually, I could just go ahead straight away and move this off the screen. Okay, so now I'll get an animation. So that's angled. Split screen moving off the screen. Okay, so now I'm gonna go down to my second clip here. Okay? I'm gonna now add a key frame here for the same position option. Okay. Gonna come ahead in time to save a point in time to 1 29 Okay. And then now at another key frame, Or just start to drag this clip off to the left. And so now if we play this back, we'll get a preview of those two split screens moving off the screen. Okay, so we get a nice reveal of that clip in the background. OK? So as you saw there, we can use the copy and paste attributes toe copy and paste the split screen attributes or the drawer mask attributes from one clip to another, which is a really nice aspect here. We can also get into animating underneath our transform options. The actual control points themselves. We can get some more detailed animation off those control points. Okay, so now with this second set of clips, I'm actually going to try and do a slightly different split screen effect. So we're gonna go to the top. Most clip. We're gonna add a drawer mask on here, and then we're gonna click once there Once. Here. Once. Here. I was here. Okay, Now, what this will allow us to do is to add I kind of quiets wipe. Was that clip as we animate it off? Okay, so I'm just gonna accentuate this a little more. Okay, Andi, I'm going to zoom out just to make sure that this point is well off the screen. Okay, so I want to be able to animate that around. Okay, so two there. Okay, so now I'm gonna select this top. Most clip. Copy it. Come to the clip below on goto, edit paste attributes, paste the drawer mask effect. Okay. And now I'm gonna move this point for that layer below to the other side here. Okay, so now we're gonna do is actually animates this this point coming around to here, okay. And then So I'm just gonna undo that. Sits in exactly the same spot on the other point, coming around to reveal from the the bottom there, up to the top. Okay, so if we click on this top. Most clip. Okay, I'm gonna do the same for this, uh, option here, too. So this point at the top, right? So I'm gonna add it's in key frames. My control points OK at the start here, when they come around to about halfway through this clip, and then I'm gonna animate this point coming across here to the right and this points coming up to the top. Okay, Until the clips almost disappeared. So basically what we should have here is this clip kind of growing in behind, okay. And then we'll come back and do the same for this next clip below. Okay, well, at a key frame for the control points will come ahead in time. Okay? So just about whether other clippers disappearing a motive, the same here. Okay, Now there are effects similar to this within final cut pro, but they don't give you the same level of control that you have working with these control points in this detailed animation. So once we get to this point where these clips are almost disappeared, Okay, at that point, I'm gonna cut the end of these clips. I'm just gonna pull back the outpoints for these clips, Okay? And then if we play through, we'll get a nice white on a disappear, And we could certainly fine tune the points at which these clips disappeared. And also fine tune the control points there so that they really match up nicely with the disappear and perhaps even just add a very short cross fade at the end here. Okay, so that it makes that finish there just slightly smoother. Okay, so we've got two types of split screen there. One split screen where were animating the position of the split screens and pulling them off screen. Okay, Andi, you could use this just for a regular split screen with no animation on. Then this second split screen, which is animating the control points to do a kind of clock wipe. Okay, Now, the possibilities for this really exciting in final cut pro 10 on. There's a lot of creative opportunities that are opened up by using this drawer mask tool on. This is really just touching the iceberg.
