1. Intro: you are interested in editing as a professional career. Get to know what the video editor does Which skills are needed to be successful? What tools you need to have access to what kind of shore you should create, what good editing is and how to find the price range for your work. If you're new to this field, I'm sure this course will give you a lot of helpful information. My name is Thomas a bod. I'm a German living in Colombia who also happens to be a commercial director and editor. Thank you very much for watching. 2. What Is A Video Editor And How To Become One: Chapter one. What is a video editor and how to become one in a firm or video production company there, several positions with different tasks and purposes, some off them. You probably know the director, the D. O. P. Or director of photography, the editor, maybe even the gaffer. And so on. A firm or video editor, also called the Qatar is the person who's crafted is to edit the separate video fights and put them together to make a firm. Basically, any manipulation off footage can be considered editing, and there are many ways to do so with cutting, using transitions and effects sound and so on. That is what an editor does. This course will concentrate more on the professional editor who does it for a living, someone who charges for editing. Still, all the principles that I will talk about are important for any kind of editor. Even if you don't make money with it for definition, As soon as somebody is paying you for editing, you can consider yourself professional. That does not mean much. It doesn't make you better. It just states that you earn your money with it. It is your career and same as in every field, there's good professionals and bad professional, so the name itself does not mean much. Before you go professional, you have to learn the editing skills. So how do you become an editor in the first place? Number one Film school In film school, you can learn all the positions and crafts that have to do with filmmaking. If you want to become an editor, just enrol in editing classes and learned the craft. That is the basis you need to learn the skills so you can offer the service. In film school. You will learn this craft, and maybe there will even give you some opportunities for paid editing. Maybe that will give you business advice, but at least you should learn the basic craft number two through self teaching. There are many editing courses and tutorials on various platforms, including this one. And yes, they do work. They are great for learning all the tools, so go find some that will teach you everything you need. If you're not enrolled in school and even if you're in film school, why not just take some extra lessons and learn some tutorials? After taking one or several courses and editing and finally knowing how to do it. Congratulations. You can consider yourself in editor, but now let us turn you into a professional editor to become a professional editor. You just need to find someone who is willing to pay you for editing. Sounds very basic and easy, and the concept of it really is. But in reality, we know that getting clients is one of the hardest parts off any business. So here a few tips on how to get Cline's number one. Get in touch with firm production or video production companies. This one goes first. Since you want to work professionally and be paid as a professional, right, there are many clients out there. But if you want to get follow up, jobs there are paid according to business standards. You should go for the production company. They always produce lots off firms and commercials and always need someone to edit them. Chances are, when you call them, they already have someone to do it. But here's the thing. Don't be set. If they said no, they might call you at some other point. Maybe they're cut the leaves. Or maybe the workload is just too much for one editor, and they will need a new one. They might call you on very short notice as well. So get your name out there. Let the production companies know that you exist. Number to get in touch with people from the business. Make friends who work and filmmaking. Go to film festivals, get closer to wherever people are in the business, check out online groups and offer your services there. I myself gotta get from posting in a Facebook form, which afterwards got me jobs and follow up jobs during a whole year. Number three. Get your profile on all platforms where people look for creatives like GOP's producers, editors, etcetera. There many websites for that. Some big ones. But usually they're always regional websites as well. Or you can even look at Craigslist. One very well known pages fiber. But competition is very high, even at the lowest rates. I'm not saying you should not check it out. Do it. Maybe there's even the niche for you, but generally I'm not sure if that's the best page to make a living. If you do not want to freelance, go search on job market platforms for companies that hire video editors. And lastly, you could also do some advertising. But I personally have not tried. So since. I believe that serious clients are to find that the production companies and they don't go on Google to search for editors. They are either approached by the editors themselves, like I said in the first point or their recommended the editors by mouth mouth propaganda. Now, when we talk about editing and a professional editor there certain skill set that you should have work on and constantly improve, let us take a closer look on which ones they are. 3. Skills You Need As An Editor: Chapter two skills you need as an editor. There's a huge variety off skills that you should have as an editor. Some come naturally. Some don't the ones that did not come naturally. You should make sure that you learn them. Number one storytelling filmmakers usually tell stories, but it is the editor who puts the story together. This means you have to be a good storyteller yourself. You can create stories even if there's no apparent narrative. If you're creative and put some effort into it, you will always find a way to tell some kind of story with whatever footage that you got even going to the kitchen. If editors correctly makes four story, the story can be a simple as using several shots to create a theme or a simple is making a connection between image and sound so that it somehow makes sense. You are the one who manipulates it. Use that power and tell a good story. Number two decision making. As an editor, you constantly have to make decisions for or against something to use some part of the footage or to cut it off. That might be one of the hardest parts of editing, cutting off what looks good and you love it. But the shot is not needed. You will have to make those decisions and always make the choices that on the best interests of the client unless he tells you otherwise. Visual imagination. The ability to visually a preview something before you cut is essential and very helpful. You will spend less time through trial and error because you can filter options, connect the images in your mind, make it preview at it and decide what works and what does it not. That does not mean that you will immediately make the right choices, but it will definitely prevent you from making too many wrong choices. Communication. Most people think of communication on Lee is something active as expressing yourself verbally. But it is not only that communication has many layers, and one of the most important, but also most ignored part of communication is listening. In order to have a healthy communication, it has to work both ways and therefore listening before speaking. It is very important, otherwise you will not understand each other, and editing it is sometimes easy to misunderstand instructions. Some clients will not have the ability to explain what they want in a very articulate way. They are not the professional here, and it is your job to listen to them, make the right questions and then interpret what they really want and need. Number five organization and planning The work off the editor, if not organized well, will quickly become chaotic, and the project will suffer from it, especially when you're working simultaneously on several projects. You should get organized to meet all the requirements asked by the client, meet the deadlines and thus work more strategically. Time planning will be important. You most probably will be paid by day rates, but even more if you're not, learn to manage your time. Number six problem solving editing will always cause problems, and you're there to fix it and make the edit work. Find a way, an alternative, a solution that makes the client happy. If there are changes to be made to the initial plan, make sure you can convince the client If you're working with a production company, they hire you so that they do not have to hassle with these problems. You are there problems over number seven technical skills I made a course that says in its title, Forget Skills, But that comes with a context off course. You need the craft skills. The point of the other course is to help editors switch the focus for moment and first learn to really understand that craft and the purpose of it, so that they can approach any project according to its needs. You might not be the most skilled edits in the beginning, and that is OK. Always only take gigs that you are sure you will be able to deliver to the client satisfaction and always learn something new. As the market changes quickly and something trendy today can be absolutely tomorrow. Be up to date business skills. If you're a freelancer or have a editing business. Always see your work as a business and treated like one. You will have to take care of many things that employees do not. For instance, you will have to work on marketing administration bookkeeping Siles among others, or at least pay for someone to do it for you. You should have at least a basic knowledge of these areas so you don't crash your business . Nine. Curiosity, patience and Courage These are not really skilled, but rather character traits. But yes, you should be of curious nature wanting to experiment, to try new things and learn constantly. You need patients, since you will be locked up by yourself for hours or even days sitting before screen and sometimes seen little progress. Courage. You will need to present new ideas and suggestions without knowing if it will be perceived as the best idea ever, or the worst idea that you could have come up with Number 10 A deeper understanding of editing. This is probably one of the most important ones. It is not only about knowing how to edit. A good editor, as I said before, must understand editing. First, he needs to understand the purpose and the use of the video, the audience that it is directed to with understanding comes feeling as well feel the right rhythm, pace and timing. I do not know many classes that teach you this, and I had to learn those things by trial and error until I found out what works best for me . That is why I also made a complete cause on editing strategy. You can check it out on my channel it is called not another video editing tutorial. Forget skills. Start understanding. Editing. Okay, now I think we cover the most important skills and character traits. Think about them. Do you have them? If not, are you eager enough to learn and acquire them to become a better editor? Now let us see what tools you need to have toe work as an editor. 4. Tools You Need As A Video Editor: Chapter three. What's tools do you need? Thank gods Times of manually cutting The footage are long gone, so obviously you'll need a reasonably powerful computer with at least one monitor, or preferably more than one and all the accessories like mouse and keyboard. Check out forms to find out which computer suits your budget and needs. The keyboard and the mouse are your primary tools. It makes sense to invest into good tools. And when researching and forums and articles, prepare yourself for Windows versus Apple. Better building your editing computer CPU regardless of anything else. If your computer does not have a powerful processor, it will be very slow. The CPU is the foundation of every editing computer. Most editing software like Adobe Premiere or Final Cuts will work using the CPU course and hyper threading. So investing in the CPU is really critical when you start building an editing computer in case off using DaVinci resolve, the CPU come secondary to the graphic card, but it's still important. The graphic Art Please choose a good graphic cut for the most software's. It's not as important as the CPU unless you're using Dave injuries off where it's the most important thing, but still it is important. So make sure to get a good graphic card, not the cheapest one ram. In editing, you will need a lot off ramp. I think that eight gigabytes should be the minimum 16 gigabyte would be much better. And obviously the more you have, the better it is storage for the storage. I recommend that you buy some, says the hard drives, because their way faster and their overall performance is much better than the normal hdgs . The HDGS. You can use them for just simple storage ing, but as soon as you're using the hard drives to work on them for editing, I strongly recommend that you get some SS tease because it will make your life much easier while editing off course there many more things that you have to check out and buy to make a good computer. But this was just a brief overview off the inside parts that are most important for editing . For more detailed information, please go to some online forums, online groups, Facebook groups and check out what people say. They're most off the times. These people, they are very eager to help you like you can just post. What would I need for this? And this? That's my budget, and people will help you to find the best parts. Or you can just go to a place where people help you, specialists, professionals. And yet that's the way you should go. And as you saw, I have not mentioned any specific products. There's a good reason for it because I don't know if you're going to watch this the day after I publish it, or just like, maybe I don't know 23 years later. And most off the products that are that old, maybe I'm not that advanced anymore. And there's new product, So please go to the group's, check them out and then buy whatever you need. Now, if you wonder how much this editing computer can cost you, it really depends on the parts and how professional you want to go. Like if you wanna have the most basic set up that works for basic editing, I think it will cost you around 500 bucks. If you want something more professional, like with better parts, you should be prepared to spend around 8 900 maybe 1000 bucks Now, if you're looking for totally professional solution, then you must be prepared to pay a lot more. It can start around $2000 but the limit is open like they are computers out there that can cost you around $60,000. But of course, it depends on what you need and how much your budget is. So do yourself a favor. Do not buy consumer computer, but rather do your research. Get yourself informed and then build your own computer or let somebody build it for you. And it doesn't matter if it's a Windows computer or apple. That depends, as I said before on your budget and your needs, and also what you prefer. Editing software. Check out the different editing Softwares and choose one. The most used and most well known soft quest of it Final cut Adobe premiere eventually resolved just to name a few. I myself worked with Adobe Premiere for editing and DaVinci Resolve for color Correction. If you're just exploring, editing and first want to try it out before paying a subscription, use the trial versions. I recommend the venture resolved, since it covers everything from video editing and sound editing to color correction and has an awesome free version that lets you do almost everything. It might be a bit complicated in the beginning if you have never worked with a professional editing software before, but you can easily learn it from tutorials, and there are tons of other programs, but most of them arm or consumer solutions also get yourself some really comfortable earphones for sound editing. I use the biodynamics DT 7 70 Pro. You will use them for hours, so make sure they're really comfortable. This is more or less the very basic set up, and there are many other tools and gadgets that can make your editing experience much better. My advice is, before you go out and buy a bunch of stuff, concentrate on the editing itself and step by step, get the gear that you want and need. There is no need for hurry. As with many other things, most off them on Lee tools. The work itself is done by yourself. Now that we have talked a lot about things that have to do with editing, let us talk about the edit itself. See in the next chapter 5. What's A Good Edit After All?: Chapter four. What's it? Good edit. After all, there are tons of videos, very good ones among them on teaching, editing, and it is great if you can learn all the skills, the tools, Softwares and all the know how. But listen, there will not automatically make you a better editor until you really understand the purpose of editing and what it good at. It looks and feels like I made another in depth course on that matter. Check it out if you want. It's called not another video editing tutorial for Gets Girls Start Understanding Editing. But here's a brief explanation off what you should consider a good edit and edit is good or well crafted when it applies exactly the pace, rhythm, timing and the right amount off the facts and transitions that best suit the end product. You could be really great that effects and transitions, but you're not being paid to show off your skills. You are being paid to make what's best for the video. Good at it is when you do not perceive the editing as something distracting when you feel it flows, and every shot is exactly as long as it really needs to be to convey the message or its intention. A second can make a huge difference, and a rap music video will most probably have a complete, different style in an orchestra, concert or speaker conference. Whatever tool you use, it has to serve the firm's purpose and make it better. If something works better when cutting it off, then you should cut it away. Even if you love the shot. Kill your darlings Now a short summary. A good editors When the edit serves the firm's purpose. Helping people to receive the message without being distracted by bad transitions, too much effect by too long or too short shots and, of course, cuts that just feel on the timing. Every asset of a good edit works in harmony with the other assets, and it really just feels good. I will give you two representative examples, one for good editing and one for bad editing. Okay, let's start with a bad example. This is an editor of A P S. A. I directed and edited a few years ago. Please focus on shut length transitions, the overall flow, etcetera, you know. Okay, now let's take a look at the improved version. Try to identify what I've changed. So basically, what I've done is chopped off everything that's not necessary. I used almost all the same shots only kicked like two and the rest. I cut off parts of the beginning and end, making it faster, shorter, more on point. Also, I got rid of the transitions. The whole film works way better without any transitions, but only with hard cuts. Now the film has only have the length, then tap before, and it not only works, but it works much better. Okay, that's it for now. Do you have any questions or any doubts? Just ask me. I will be happy to reply to you now Have you heard of something called Shorey? A portfolio riel or whatever they might call it? Let us talk about it in the next chapter. 6. The Editor's Showreel (Demo Reel, Portfolio): Chapter five. The editor, Suria. As an editor, you should also consider yourself a businessman. And like every businessman, in order to get new clients, you should have something to show so that the potential client contrast you and your service. They want to make sure to have the right person. After all, they are making an investment, and there is a purpose, a gold and responsibility attached to it. And in your case, the business card that you show is the show reel. The show really is where you show some off the works that you have done in the past. Many times, people traditionally refer to the show really or really, as the compilation off several projects edited into a single showcase video. So there are people who prefer the show real video. Others want to see the project as a whole. I think the best thing is to have both to have that space where you have all of your works , plus for show real video. You can put it on a website or use platforms like venue to host your works. I suggest that you have both types of show reels so people can decide whatever they want to see. Maybe somebody just wants to see your show reel video, But then he gets interested in suddenly he wants to see more. Now he can take a closer look on the full works that you have edited about the show. Real video length and selection are the most important attributes to a show. Really, you don't want to bore whoever watches you're really. And most people in decision making positions have to make many decisions throughout the day . And when we talk about film production companies, they receive many reels every day, so they don't have the time to watch five minutes off your show reel. They might invest that time, but only if they like what they saw in the beginning. But even then, they will appreciate it. If you cut straight to the point around one or two minutes would be the top limit. If you ask me if they like that minute, they might actively search for the rest of your work. Also, if you keep it short, that sends the right message. This editor knows his target audience. This editor knows timing. This editor knows how not to bore me, but if they see a five minute long video, they will think, Why would I trust someone who does not even understand the form? And that's the function of a show. Really? Understand this. The show really is not for your ego. It is a marketing tool to attract or convince clients. My second tip is only show the best. I know that in the beginning you have little variety of choice. So you just show what you have and that is OK. Now, as you growth jobs and Mulan, skill sets new projects. And with more experience, your work should reflect that progress, which means your work should constantly improve. And as soon as you have better projects, you just drop the less good work. Whenever you gain new material, do that filter. Do not display the bad stuff on your page. Keep it in the back hand just in case somebody is asking for something very specific and you happen to have worked on something exactly like that. But generally do not mix good work with bad work. Onley show your best works so that people know what to expect from you. After all, the show real defines who you are as a professional, and you want to make sure that people only see the best of you areas for everyone. For the director, the editor, the director of photography, designer, etcetera. Basically, they all have the same principles. They only differ from focus, and thus the editing itself can change. The director of photography focuses on nice shots here. It makes sense to have a longer shots that show his skills off cinematography. The editors really focuses on showing different projects with a lot off editing techniques and showing his skills. The director uses the real as a showcase off various projects that he has worked on. I myself, as a director, preferred to send three complete commercials so that they can see the directing skills. A show real will not show that very well, but still, if they want it, I also send the show Real video. Here you can see it. You might be wondering why I talk about the directors or the GOP's. Really, the reason is all of them have to be edited in a specific way, and at the same time they all share the basics that I talked about in the beginning. Also as an editor, you might get jobs to edit re. It's off the Opie's directors, designers, etcetera each and any of those cases think about the audience and what they would like to see or need to see so that the real fulfils its purpose. And now let us talk about the thing that rules the world money. See you in the next chapter. 7. How To Find A Rate And Position Yourself As A Freelance Editor: Chapter six. How much would you charge as a freelance editor when thinking of how much to charge? Do not set the bar. It's survival because you should not only survive on a budget, you have to make winnings. Take into account the time you spent editing the equipment that you paid for the expenses that you have is a freelancer because you pay your own Social Security, etcetera. All of these things have to be taken into consideration When you think of your rate off course, it depends on the country or even the region where you live. The cost of living can differ a lot, and with it the established rate. So first go out, do your research and find out what the ever trait is, where you live or where you want to offer your services. And please do not take the cheapest editors as a reference. There will always be someone who will do it almost for free or less than you, and that is not your competition. You might think you should take that badly paid job because it is an opportunity, a chance, and you can show your skills, and then maybe there will be some follow up jobs well, here to things that I want you to know first, the client who asked you to do that work for almost for free already knows that you did it once. So why would he pay now more? They will not. So do not believe false promises off follow up jobs, etcetera. And even if they promise you to pay more than next time, they will hardly pay you the ever trait or the standard rate off course. In some cases, it works, but in most cases it does not. Also, please think of your fellow editors. They all need to maintain a certain rate to keep. The business is running. Don't bring that rate down. And now the second thing, you need jobs to create a really to get new jobs. It's a vicious circle, and I understand that. But if you're going to work for free, then why not do it? For an NGO for friend or personal project, you can use stock footage and show your skills like that. You do not need to have a real official project to show off your skills, and please do not sell yourself too cheaply. because people will not all of a sudden start paying you accordingly. Once you ask them to, they will just find someone else to do it. The rate you charge will define the niche that you end up working in. So if you're afraid to tell the client a high rate or if they refuse, then to begin with there, maybe not the clients that you want to work for, look in the right place. Look where people appreciate your work and are willing to pay you accordingly. It might take some time, effort and attempts, and you will most likely first get some nose. But eventually someone will be willing to pay, and from then on you will know that it is possible to charge the rate that you need to charge. In some cases, you will not be paid per day, but you might be offered to work on a value based project with a fixed budget, and that's okay. But remember that in that case it's mostly then who set the value, and you should negotiate because you will not know how many days you will be working on that project. Try to make some calculations and ask for budget that covers your time. Spend on the workload. Consider that your earnings will not increase. With more time invested in that project, you might end up working endlessly on the same project without being further recompense for it. Surely that's not always the case, but in my opinion it makes more sense to charge per day. Some people even offer hourly rates. That's up to you if you want to do that, to give you some inside. In the United States, the average day rate for experienced editors depending on the region, can be between $401,000. Germany is similar with rates between 307 150 euros. Off course, very high experienced editors who work on high prestige projects might earn a lot more. TV stations generally don't pay that much, but can be a source of continuous work opportunities. There's one more thing that I would like to say about the day rate, though you might think that if you have a low day rate, you're more competitive. But here's the thing. If you offer your services to film production company and you tell them a very low day, rate. Chances are they will not even look at your story. Um, because if you charge way too low, they will not perceived you as a professional editor. That is psychology going on there. If you have a very low price tag that will send the message that you have not much value to offer. Think of that before you go down with your day rate. And now we've come to the end of the course. The class project for the class project. I want you to get creative. I guess everyone of you has a cell phone. I want you to think oven everyday action and make a short film about it firmed with your cell phone. It's up to you if you put a lot of effort into creating those images, because I primarily will focus on the edit. So pick a situation, film it and create a short story through editing. Make it last no longer than a minute if you're just starting out and haven't decided on an editing software yet here. Some suggestions off Softwares that offer free trial versions. DaVinci Resolve Premier Pro Final Cut. If, for any reason you cannot film anything by yourself and find some stock footage off any topic and create a film using them, then send me the links. I will watch it make some critique suggestions and corrections so that you can improve it. Also, I want you to send me to links one with the video that you consider good editing and want with an example for bad editing. Additionally to that, I want you to write down why you consider one good and one bad editing. Those two examples can be some of your own films. Or if you do not have any. Just sent me anything.
