About This Class

Are you a beginner eagerly looking for a new great project in Procreate but you only see the very beginner stuff?

This class is perfect for you! It is designed for the next step after you learn how the interface and the gesture controls work. Now it is the time to get your hands dirty!

Nick Misani is the original creator of the FAUXSAIC style, which is actually a false mosaic floor tile effect created in a digital program. It is such a cool style that it even has a hashtag on Instagram (#fauxsaics), made the creator famous and loads of artists try it out. These artworks are usually created in Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop, but in this class I will show you how to reach this effect in Procreate on your iPad.

In this class we will create a fauxsaic from your hand lettering...even if you don't know how to hand letter.

The class is ideal for beginners in Procreate who have some idea how the program works, but actually any creative can get something out of it! It is a great class for those who have a big Photoshop background and are just adjusting to the interface of Procreate and also for those who are just entering the world of digital art, because the class brings a greater understanding to how layers work.

In this class you will pick up some useful stuff like:

- easy hand lettering

- creating a custom tile brush

- tracing

- creating highlights and shadows (make a cool 3D effect) from flattened layers

- add textures and shadows

- "photoshop" shoes.

By the end of this class you will have a finished piece of artwork including your own hand lettering in the fauxsaic "style"! You will have your own custom tile brush, a geometric tile pattern and a great understanding of layers (very important for digital work).

So, if you are ready, let's go and create together!

1. Introduction: I always liked tiles, mosaics and mandalas, or favorite art project with my daughter is actually creating those types out of paper. And I also love to implement civilization into my art in terms of breaking down a complex shape into smaller words are implementing a little white space in between. Once I was researching American floor tiles and I came across the Arctic off Nick Massoni. Okay, it's false floor, mazelike, tired designs in illustrator. The status he created made him famous, and he mostly creates a typography off city names. It is such an amazing style that it has even a hashtag on instagram a lot of artists around the world trying to implement this technique into their art. So I also thought, How could I make this happen in pro creates? For those who are seeing me for the first time? My name is always under Gabbert, and I'm a professional, our teacher and artist. I have more than 10 years of experience in graphic designers well, and I just love trying out new techniques. If I say some beautiful or interesting art bees, I started to think about how to create it in the easiest way simplest process, mainly because of my teacher brain, so that I can explain it to a beginner. So I don't apply this in disclose as well. So we will create a simple hand laddering and turn it into a folks like Am I pronouncing it right? This class is ideal for beginners, but to the type of beginners who already knows how procreate works. Because even though I will comment on each stuff, it can be quick on demanding. So make sure to watch an intro to procreate Kloss. If hero skill share and then watch Disclose unusual Lately, you don't need to know how to hand letter. You will pick up some useful techniques. Try the process like tracing is a hand lettering, creating a custom type brush? UM, creating highlights and shadows with plateau layers full of shopping shoes and having texture and shadows. There's just a great way to make your hand lettering more interesting. This class is great for those as well, who are just entering on the world off digital art, mainly because I think brings a greater understanding how layers work. If you are a person with a big finish of background, this class will be great to help you to adjust to the interface and workflow off procreate as well. And this class comes with a custom brush on template as a bonus to make sure you succeed. So I hope to see you in this class. I can't wait to see what you create. 2. What is a Fauxsaic?: welcome in this video we're going Teoh, talk about what's a folks die prime promo singing, right? What is it? Who created it on what characteristics does it how? Well, as you can see, this is when I have created it is basically, uh exactly what it its name. So as it is, a fool's floor time was like effect created in a digital program. Usually it is created in photo shop or illustrator. And in this class, I'm going to focus on how to create it in a procreate. What I'm using as the newest iPad pro the second generation apple pencil on procreate. I'm sure, uh, there are several ways how you can create us affect, but the one I'm going to share with you waas the one that birth for me. Okay, Let's see what the folks like iss Uh, these are the artworks named. This is Typographic Mosaic. It's the different name for them. These are lettering. Things mainly names off the city's on, and this stylus created by the artist next Nick Massoni Hey. Became famous with, um this is his website. I'm just going to show you this is his, uh, website. He creates all different kinds off words on DLA rings mainly typographic, not hand lettering. And what are the character sticks off these artworks? Let's just take a look. Investment. So there is a lettering. This is the 1st 1 these lettering are outlined. If you concede e that each letter is followed by a row off tiles and then behind that. Actually, there are different patterns created with tiles, then their imperfections. Suffolk. As you can see, these times are not really regular or precise. They follow, like, different strokes. But, um, there are some, um, interesting solutions, for example, like here, if I would well, in nicknames on his website, he creates these outworks in illustrator. And he had draws each and every tile and also colors them So lettering outlines imperfections. Yes, under lex, off course. So this is the last characteristics of these artworks have, uh, deez lacks Photoshopped into them to create the more realistic Look, we're going to do the same. So let's just take a look in procreate. How to get us started 3. Creating the Lettering: we have in pro creates a few opened program. You end up in the gallery. We are going to create a new CanWest custom sized canvas. So pick on deploys buttons click, create custom size. And what I love to work with is the free 1040 times in Pixels Square. And I'm just going to gold it for psych. Done. Now we have our clear, um 10 West. We're going to create or laddering their several ways to do that. The 1st 1 is that you create your lettering on paper and you import it into your iPad by clicking here at an insert a photo or take a photo with your right by iPod about your design and you insert it into the program. But if you can't hand leather, I have a solution for you. So find 101 funds dot com on Jews. A word. Yes, this is the most important. Choose a short word you want to create this project way of I've chosen love. Um, just need to write it here. Go choose a handwriting up here and you have all different kinds off lettering. Now, these are free, um, funds. You can use for your personal use. Uh, you don't need to download it. Oh, or anything. Just great to close up. And by hitting these two bottles, create a screenshot now returned to procreate. Click here. Is that a photo? Find the photo it is. Here. Make it. Ah, little bit bigger. You know, in layers add a new layer juice. Um, brush. I like to use model line in calligraphy. And now just outline the ladder's. This is really just a trick for those who don't know how to handle it are Ah, but would still like to do this project. You can do this as well with ah riel typography. You don't need to have letter, but we're going to do this in this class. So now I'm going to turn off this layer, actually undulating it. So now I ended up with a shape off the ladder, and this is what we need. So even when you are going to create your own hand lettering or typography, uh, make sure you Onley need the shape. Ah, off it And what I wanted to say. As you can see, I covered these, uh ah things. So if you don't have a seamless line, you will be able to feel the shaping with color. So now I have a shape off my lettering. You can do next, sir. Um but that's all I'm going to create my own hand lettering and how I'm going to do that is , uh, okay, I'm going to just one going to do it. This layers clear Jews, a collect calligraphy brush. And when I love to use this script and how I'm going to create hand lettering and I'm going Teoh, just summarize brush learning for you is that when you have a stroke up, you wanted to be thin than when you have a stroke down. You wanted to be thick, so like this. Okay, so I'm not going to use Hello. But I wanted to do love something like this. I want to have nice spacing between the letters and actually turned out pretty well. So I'm just going to use this one. Uhm, I'm going to resize it a little bit to make a bigger uh and into the center can spend time like more time creating a nicer lettering. But legis mo wants the next video to show you how to create your custom tile brush 4. Create Your Custom Tile Brush: What we need is to feel the shape of this lettering with tiles. You could draw all of the times by yourself, but I think that's time consuming. And we have these their method here. So we're going to create a custom brush. What is amazing about appropriate brushes? You can find this picture in the artist handbook off procreate is that they have two sources. There's a shape source and the grain source. If you have ever used a for the show brush Photoshopped brushes were one layered meaning that wouldn't that well layer you hot, different shapes and capacities to create the brush. But now, ah, you have shape source and the great stars, which can work like a differently but create on wonderful result result for the brush. So in appropriate, we're going to create a custom brush. Ah, hit the plus button here, and we're going to choose the shape source. You have the option to swept from pro library. Here you have the library and just find our this one blank and choose the exact same one for degree. What we want as a simple square tile without any apostle d eso. Whenever you have Ah, some options you can choose from. So we're going to set at first spacing, spacing as, uh, like, uh, separating Does shapes on creating stroke with them. If I have low spacing, I have a seamless breast. Strict. But I don't want that. I have I'm going to set this to 66 66 6 So that's yes. That's just fine. On define our like, grating. Okay, Painting. I have this stroke. No, What I want also is streamline if I don't have any streamline Uh, the stroke I'm making reacts to every moment I'm making with my hand. But they find putting it to the maximum. It is stabilising the movement. I don't want any jitter it randomize Is that any fall off? It means that it makes it like a fate. I don't want any of that. And the jitter Uh, okay, let's go to the shape that said the shape behavior. I want the rotation to be with 100%. That means that these tiles are going to react Ah, to the curves I'm making general. Yes, I want to orient to screen to turn off. So now I did this shapes are not orienting to scream on. And I think that's just Oh, I wanted to set. Okay, I just name it Tile brush. Done. And now when I'm painting you see, I have dis Nile, Nice tiles. So in the next video, we're going to appoint this tiles to the laddering. I'm including the brush in their resources, which you can find in your project tab. 5. Tile Your Lettering: All right, so now that we have or lettering we have or custom brash, what we're going to do is to create a second layer, uh, empty layer, Uh, from this, um, lettering and feel that with tiles. So what I'm going to do is to hit the layers, um, create a new layer. Let's call this tiled letters. Uh, click the first layer on and take select. And now just simply select the tiled letter layer, what it does that we are going to actually draw into an empty layer and feel that with your tiles. So now select your tile brush. Andi Jews its size to be approximately 30 persons. You can say that choose a different color. I'm golf going for whites. And when I'm going to do is to feel the shape like this. Okay, Nicer. Ah, what I'm going to do is to follow one off the owl Flynt's and what I have spaces like this . I'm going to simply just feel it with a second stroke. This is not a mistake. We are going to erase around these tiles to make them look better. But if you want to try to keep even distance between the two lines. So what I'm going to do is to go around a full lettering on fill it. Ah, we tiles like this, I'm going to speed up this process. Okay, Great. It took me just, like, three minutes to fill this. If you can see, I have some places like this where I missing time. So I just hit there and there. Ah, let's say here, uh, and now choose and razor tried to make it, uh, around brush hard airbrush on choosing for my, uh, razor brush because it has hard edges. I want my brush to be at approximately 10 passenger, and what I'm going to do is to erase. Okay, 10% is too much. I'm going to lower down to seven. Great. Okay. I'm just going to erase around my tiles to make them like Luke more, um, natural or irregular to make this imperfections onto Haven't even spacing the wind. You know, I was lectured by my husband that nobody would like put childs on the floor, not too close to each other. So just the rays around them and is going Teoh, uh, speed up this process again. If you arrive to places like Disparate. So Maney overlapping. Just follow the outlines and just raised by them. And then you will know what to put where. If you have irregular shapes like dis, try to make them smaller, as if it was really a mosaic. 6. Outlines: What we have now is a tiled lettering. If I'm turning off this layer, I You can't see it right now. I just put the background coloring to a little bit grayish. I'm going to disliked on and turned this layer off. And now you can see we have nice tiles. Um, this will look better. Okay, so I know this is not yet dare, but you can see it is nice. The second characteristic wants outlining. And this is what we are going to do. We're going to do the exact same thing we did previously. So I'm going, Teoh, create a new layer. We name it a name it out lines and put this layer. Okay, beloved, uh, balloon below origin lettering layer. Now select the lettering layer. Click here to invert. And now select the outline that year. What it did is that now, uh, when we are painting or tiles need to select title brush. Uh, we are going to add these tiles, uh, around the lettering. If you erased, uh, a little bit part off the outlines off the lettering, I will have easier work right now. It doesn't matter if you didn't br, you're away going to go around the razor again. I'm going to choose now a different color. I'm going to go for a kind of magenta darker on. Simply create one row off tiles around. Okay, It's not really perfect. But I can just add sometimes here and there where I need it. For example, here. And what else do I need to do is to feel this part off the lettering with their styles. So I'm just going to go around them also in the middle. Um, and like, does know. So here on I think I'm done. I might need, like, bigger tiles. Stone here, here is Well on. Now I'm going. Teoh. Uh, actually, I'm going to raise this parts. I don't like that two small tiles. Great. Great. Now I choose my razor again. Just simply go over these out science again, OK? I need, uh, six and just simply erase around them on if there is ah, place where these white tires are touching the second color. It raised that to Okay, so did they. Don't touch each other. - Okay . When you arrive to a place like this, for example, try to make a row from these tiles so that they have some direction. Uh, for example. Here, As you can see, this is the line we want to follow. So erase it. And ah, with that in mind. All right, so I think we are finished with the outlines. Uh, obviously, you can spend more time with this if you choose. Like, for example, smaller size tiles to create the lettering to create. I outlined it to Luke even better. Um, but I just wanted to share this would U s so that it is doable. Project? Uh, not too demanding. So now I'm going to disliked the layer on what I have now in my layers is the outlines on the Thai letters. And in the next video, we're going to create a background. There's a different technique. 7. Background: in this video, we are going to deal with the background. It is going to be a bit different technique that we did. What we need now is a German pattern off tiles. Um, we need to draw, but we are not going to do this free hunt. But we are going to open Google and just type tile pattern factor free hit images on. Just find some royalty. Fleet free tiles that you like. This is the type off the tile pattern I like. It's called Cairo Tiles on when I right that here Caro tiles call your tile pattern, it opens me up. Several profit possibilities here is ah, Kraft months pays the comb over. I can down with this particular pattern for free, but I have only 54 months like ask Gigi psd wg on. And I know one that when I'm going to do again is I'm going Teoh screen shot this image and , uh, go to procreate. I'm going to hide my, uh, layers. I'm sorry. Create a new layer and I'm going Teoh is ERT photo on? I'm going to insert this file. Ah, yes. I'm going to make it as big as I need it to be. And now I'm going to are clear to new layer about it. Juice Ah, white color. Choose the monoline brush and I'm going to trace over one. Roll off the creating pattern and then I'm going to duplicate it to create the pattern. So I just do that. I'm going to speed the things off. If you keep holding the line, it feels training up. So it really makes it easier to on dro once and geometric batteries If you can see I have a role. All that I traced, I have these alliance that will match. I will turn this layer off below and actually I can delete it. And what I'm going to do is to select this Lior andare placates. And now I can hit the move to Onda. Uh, make this happen, OK, To do this again, I'm going to flick the firm selection and merged down, and now I have them combined and I'm going to do this several times, uh, to have the whole canvas field would the baton. The next thing I'm going to do, I want to have the tiles selected. I don't want these white lines I want them to be transparent on. What I'm going to do is I'm going to make emergencies two layers. I'm going to create a new layer. Uh, quick, the tiled layer it select and hit invert selection. And now go to this layer above. Choose a color. Let's say orange okay. And click that layer. I don't think filled layer. And now you how the the tiles in the pattern. And now I can hide this player below. So when I'm changing the background color, I have this nice patterns. Okay, So in the next video, let's see how to combine this widow laddering I included transparent PNG off DeCaro type pattern in the resources that you can freely use. 8. Connect the Lettering with the Background: Okay, so now I'll let's reveal Or a lettering Layers. Would this kill your tiles? Uh, behind them. I'm actually going to rename this que zero tiles. Okay, on what I want to do is to, um he raised the lettering from this, uh, tires. Get the razor, make it a bigger size. Just a layer of the Cairo tiles on This is going to be asked. Simple as it sounds. Erase it. This is the easiest way because I and I'm choosing this because we need to have these uneven edges again, around or laddering. If I would just cut things around, it wouldn't be so organic. And that's what we want. So I'm just going through all the other ring on. You're raising the lettering from those styles. Okay, cool. I allow. How does looks do you like that? 9. Color Variation: Okay, so it looks really nice. Uh, now let's make it look, riel. They're afraid it can do you need to do we need to add some texture how we need to add color variation on shading color variation Because we need to create a flattened white layer from these tiles to make the other ones. So what I'm going to do is to select, uh, the tiled letters, the alp lines, Andi Cairo tiles on create a new group. Now I'm going to, uh, duplicate the group Onda full after neat, then select it Jews white and, uh, Phil Layer. And now I have a flattened field layer with white. Now, what I'm going to do is to hit, select, like, automatic a randomly select, um, tiles. Okay, so now did I have These are tiles selected. I click duplicate, and now I have these selected tires. Now, did I have the selection? I can a select the layer on choose a color. Um what say, um, darker orange and, uh, fill the layer. Now I'm going to change the opacity. I'm going to hide. Desolate. Now I have some color variation. Uh, on these styles, I might want some to be brighter Seiken a manually color. I couldn't go to this. Caro Tyson's simply go around Andi, just at this here and there. 10. Shading: Okay, so now that I have the color variation, I'm going to create a shading. What? I'm going to dio I already have a white layer. I'm off Cairo tiles selected and death placates. So now I have to, uh, tiles on and I'm going to select one of them on fill it with black. So, Phil Layer. So now I have I'm just going to what I have. I have white. This is going to be the highlight. And I have a black, which is contribute a shadow. It put this below, uh, by my lettering, and I'm going to choose this white hit. So left and click free times up here what it does it moves the layer with free pixels display. This means that it creates, in effect, as if the tiles were lit from the side. Then I'm going to choose the black layer selected and top free times here on what it did. It created a shadow, says you can see there is a highlight and there is a shadow, and now it has a realistic effect 11. Texture: in this video, we are going to create texture. Um, so now treat a new layer. Okay, on. Put it about the background. This is going to be renamed. What's call it, uh, texture one. Let's choose a brush from the industrial. We have a concrete block, which was a big brush on the dark. Great color. And what I'm going to do is to go over out of the whole. You know what? I want this park to be about darker, so I'm just going to just, uh very Yeah, uh, well, use. So not have, uh, textured thing behind the tiles. And I'm going to love her deal capacity. So it here on just make it askew. Wish. Now we're going to create a texture above, uh, our tiles on. What I'm going to do is the same exact thing. I'm going to go over again, my tiles just very lightly, and I'm going to lower birdie opacity, and I'm going to go to Jack's. Adjustments and motion blur so it creates as if it was, but like textured all, it's the 12 at the shoes 12. Adding the Shoes: So we have the last element that you want. Shoes. How are these tiles? What we're going to do is to go to Google again. Find, um, stop for a sight of, for example, and flesh, or I don't pixels picks, obey, then just right shoes above. So look for something like this, uh, or dis dis looks great. So I'm just going to use this click on download for free save image. Go back to procreate. Click at Desert Photo. Now we have the issues, and what I'm going to do is to hit select, Okay? Chose free hunt on just trace around it. Okay. On just simply hid applicator, and it will. I'll just put it here. I'm going to delete this image. Now I have the shoes, which I'm going to make smaller. Uh, when I need is, uh, wait for it. What? I It is shadows. So make sure you have those in black. They're going to create shadows greater layer below the shoes to round brush and go below the shoes. And you can just ah, clicked adjustments quick. Uh, most are. Sigh Slide it to adjust to create this fact off. Um, choose the layer below, which gave you the above texture. And you can just add a bit more shadow here and there on just, uh, hit motion blur Ginna Better so that you have some Christ. Well, thanks. Okay, so, uh, it's finished. 13. Final Thoughts: Okay, Amazing. If you're watching this video, you have gone through the whole process. Congratulations. I hope you like the class.
