About This Class

The process of fashion design requires a plethora of skills but perhaps the most essential is the ability to sketch well. Though sketching is naturally an unbounded form for brainstorming fashion concepts, this class will teach you the basic technique of using grid suits to add a professional structure to any kind of fashion sketch you draw. A grid suit is essentially a grid that is placed on the fashion figure that allows you to depict the dimensions of the body you will be drawing garments on.

I have been working professionally as a fashion illustrator since 2006 and have had the honor of working with many incredible clients including Tiffany & Co., IMG Models, and Lancome. The techniques that you will learn in this class are the very ones that I have used in all of those endeavors. 

What You'll Learn

In this class you will learn how to draw the fashion figure and apply grid suits, a sketching technique that is used to accurately represent the flow, weight, and construction of fashion garments in a drawing. We'll cover:

  • Selecting garment & poses. Learn how garments and poses interact with each other in fashion illustration
  • Sketching poses and drawing the grid suit. How to sketch the fashion figure and apply the grid suit to showcase the figure's form
  • Sketching garments using the grid suit. How to draw garments on top of the figure
  • Finalizing the sketch. How to finalize the sketch and render using lighting

What You'll Make

In order to practice and refine your own sketching skills you will create a fashion sketch that includes the figure and accompanying garments based on grid suits for a piece from your favorite brand collection this season. At each stage in your process you will have the opportunity to share your progress with the rest of the students enrolled in this class to receive feedback and high fives for your wonderful work!

1. Big Pen Silhouette Drill: - for the first step will be sketching all the posters that you picked out. - You will want to use the biggest marker you confined. - Try to focus on breaking sections of the body into little individual lines and shapes. - Keep in mind these don't need to be perfect. - You will be redrawing these in the next step. 2. Turning Silhouettes into Figures: - Now we're going to create five figure drawing sketches by refining our silhouette sketches - one at a time. - Take each of your silhouette sketches, - place either trace paper or any translucent paper like animation bond on top of it, - and begin loosely adding details to the figure. - You just need to get the basic anatomy into the right place. - Continue to utilize your post references for this part. - As you can see, - I tend to keep my figure drawing sketches more on the loose and raw side, - mainly because we will be refining our drawings with each draft and because I want to keep - my final sketch fresh. - Also, - with this draft, - I'm taking the opportunity to correct any mistakes I made in my initial silhouette sketch. - Once you have done this for five sketches, - we will move on to add Ingrid suits. 3. Drawing the Grid Suit: - Now we're adding a grid suit to our sketch from the previous step. - The point of the grid suit is to have a reference for rendering the garment. - Later. - I start with the centre front of the grid suit because it's the easiest reference points - for other lines next at the collar around the neck. - Then add the arm hole, - connecting the top of the shoulder to the armpit with a straight line. - Connect the arm hole with the collar. - Start at the centre frontline. - Go across the chest, - cross the nipple to the site. - Seem. - Add the waistline, - which ago across the smallest section of the torso. - Next at the hip line, - Theun at the leg hole, - which is from the crotch to the base of the hip. - Finally at the dart lines, - which are halfway between the center line and the side seam. - Once you have drawn the grid suit for all five sketches, - we will begin sketching the garment on the pose 4. Sketching the Garment: - Now you're going to sketch the garment you picked on the Post. - You picked this first parts optional, - but it really helps when you're just learning. - Place a piece of trace paper over your garment reference and draw a grid suit onto now. - Use that as your reference to sketch the garment onto the post with the grid suit. - One thing to note the garment lines won't necessarily fall on the grid suit lines, - but the grids who will help you determine where the line should actually go on the sketch. - So if the garments waistline falls below the true waistline, - then draw it below the grid suits. - Waistline really focus on capturing the shape of the garment. - You've probably noticed with each step we're refining and adding detail to the sketch. - Since we're gonna be redrawing this, - don't hyper focus on details that will come later 5. Carbon Copy: - Now that we've sketched the garment onto the figure, - it's time to transfer, - drawing onto a new piece of paper. - You can do that by using carbon copy paper, - a light box. - We're just scribbling on the back side of your rough draft. - I personally scribble on the back side of my drawing with as many pencils as my hand can - hold. - I use color pencils at this point so I can tell the difference between my new lines and - what's already on the page. - As you transfer your drawing onto the new paper, - try to refine it. - Don't just trace the image, - but take your time and try to get all the lines right where you want him, - because those lines will be your guide for the final sketch. - Once we have transferred the whole image to a new page, - we will begin the final draft 6. Final Draft: - first step I do on the final draft is too taken h two pencil and refined the lines that - transferred from the carbon copy. - This is by far the longest stage and requires the most. - Patients and concentration try to slow down the pace a lot, - because at this stage each line really matters. - Look for any lines I feel aren't ready to be inked and make slight adjustments with a - pencil. - Once the line is ready, - I use a fine tip my krump in and start thinking in the details. - I'm gonna walk you through what I often use, - but I really encourage you to experiment and find out what mediums and techniques work best - for you. - Once I have finished putting down all the lines and pen, - I watered down Sumi ink and begin rendering shadows with a watercolor brush. - Before I start painting, - I'll test my meat mixture on a different piece of paper. - Usually try to have a consistency of about 10% gray for this piece. - Amusing arches £300 hot pressed watercolor paper because watercolor paper is made out of - many thin layers allows you to slowly make areas darker by applying multiple layers over - the same area. - So I start with areas I want to make darkest and slowly expand out toe lighter areas by the - end, - nearly off the piece as at least one layer of ink on it. - Now that have the lion rendered, - I will begin adding the details. - To do this, - I start drawing on top of the ink with color pencil. - From here, - I continued to color at detail and render. - And until I feel the peace is complete, - I really look forward to seeing all your finished pieces. - Good luck.
