In 2016 I founded Beat School, an online platform and series of educational programs to help aspiring artists and producers learn how to make beats, accelerate their growth, and stay inspired.

I'm originally from New York but these days you'll find me traveling around the world writing songs or playing beats on a rooftop somewhere.

I appreciate you stopping by, and if you'd like to get in touch you can DM me or shoot me an email at [email protected]

1. Course Intro & Overview: welcome back to another class with yours truly key over. And I'm the man who is obsessed with making don't music and teaching you how to make your own. In this course, we're going to dive into funky hip hop, abbreviated it to funk up, and in this course I walk you through kind of how to put modern vibes on old school beats. So from a music producer, I've been making music most of recording artist. I've been doing this over 10 plus years. I run an online community for music producers called Beat School Online. You can check that out of beat school, online dot com or all of my free resource is and goodies that you see me using in this course you can get for free at Keio Ryan dot com slash resource is that will be in the description below if you want those freebies. But let's talk about this course so if you've taken any of my course before, you know that I'm a firm believer in actually doing so, I want you to get some stem some files to actually follow along. To put these kinds of the practice, you're going to learn how to make your eight awaits. Bang, You're gonna learn how to make really cool, funky high hats You're gonna learn my tips, tricks and tactics when it comes to really mixing Ah kind of boom bap hip hop track, but still keep it so that it doesn't feel so old school. It feels dated and actually has a modern twist. This is gonna be a modern twist on kind of old school boom bap, but it still has those elements of kind of low five modern instruments. If that makes sense, so dive in. I hope that you guys enjoy. I had a lot of fun making this track. I hope that you learn a thing or two from this course. And, as always, feel free to shoot me a message from everywhere online At Keio Line K I a o r. Iowa, grab a refugee choice set aside a few minutes to learn and I see on the inside do you there 2. Keys & Chords: what is good. You'll coming back to you with another course and tutorial today. We're gonna be making something fresh, fly and funky. I'm feeling it's Friday right now and I was feeling I'm in a little bit of ah, I want to call it a love funk where you know what I mean? You start seeing somebody new and, you know, it was kind of it's exciting, but you're kind of unsure what's going on. You know? You know what I'm talking about? Where it's that kind of, um it's the feelings gonna be a little bipolar. So I wanted something kind of fresh fly fun and funky to kind of Ah, help me, You help me ill Bring me out of my love funk And I think I found the thing. So let's jump into it. This might even be this would be a good name for the track. Is love fun? Because this is, ah, gonna be a kind of a funky, um, funky track. Um, this dude named I think his name's l train just dropped these dopes samples on spice. And so I found this one, um, that I love. It's an organ way. Some batter, math run. Do we're gonna do 1 92 just in case one a trap. We want to trap things out. You feel me? So wake this way a little bit. All right, let's start. Let's play this little bit. You know what I also found? I found a drum loop to go with this too. It's ah was in his pack and it's Oh, someone. I'm gonna play that along with this, um, to kind of give it a bit of a field. - But if we took these less you this. Let's see how this sounds. E. I love that. Hey, we definitely cut that out. You cut that out at some point way. If you do like that thing, that's where maybe we'll cut it out right there. - Way . What if we took this? Sorry about that all day doing construction on this joint. You feel me? Okay, so it's a pretty It's a pretty, um, straightforward sample. Um, pretty much this seeing the same things, um, repeated. So I just wanted to open up a little bit as this is a because this will get really repetitive. We're gonna wanna chop a lot of things out to a bunch of little flares to this because otherwise, if dishes repeats over and over and over, it'll get boring. So one had some vocal chops to it. Some eight awaits, Um, or maybe some base me, some funky bass. I think we could have a lot of fun making me kind of a soulful track. Let's, uh, let's add some vocals next. 3. Vocal Textures: I just Let's jump into some vocals. I pulled the different a couple different runs from a stash that already at and start making system with way, - way . If there's a vocal dropped into that, they might be cool if there's like percussion and stuff in there rather than these vocals cool, that works for now, at least for some vocals, Let's move into the drums. 4. Kick & Snare Overview: All right, let's do some drums. Let's Ah, let's steal this guy's drums. Ha, ha. Still your girl? Still your drums, right. Dumpy old school cake. My work joking with the kid. That's a goal kick till that's old school kind of pick two. That might be one. I just wanna make sure that it wasn't so that's how we gonna get down with it. We really gonna make this there. We go in a little bit quieter. You can see this is of acquired in that one, too. Sure. Wait forms. Lineup cool. All right, let's get that bounce. Cool. Got the kicks. Let's move on to our snare. Pretty cool, dusty snare sound. Regular dusty old school snare. Maybe lairson stairs displaced in time for being the biggest Chico. Whatever some old school joints in here for a hot minute. That's a good one. Shot to stolen drums. I think going to be good with those. One of those is gonna work. Think that maybe the window. All right, let's add our sneers into this so it's funny, right? I spent all that time looking version is nothing like the 1st 1 the most way way. We're going to with this, we're going to keep the simple, you know, a little bit off. Uh, and then that's a cool kind of a rim shot. I don't think this is a good Maybe you will try it. I kind of like that's near sound. I think this is a hat. - Next is the most important piece. Which is those high hats? Some real loosey goosey, um, sloppy high hats. 5. Hi Hats Walkthrough: all right. All so I just tried to video hours making them drums, and it turned out terribly. So I'm going to try this again. Um, where I actually make the Yeah, I made some just in bad drums. So I'm doing the video because the hi hats went so bad. So I'm going to try these again. So I'm gonna try to do is instead just get a real granular with my high hats Here, Um, see if we can get something a little bit and then we'll move all these over. So about because this is all about the highest. Distract is the high at. I probably shouldn't be doing these in a vacuum, meaning that with the other tracks. But I try. Alright, let's try. Let's see what happens. E I don't love it. - It just sounds back. I'm going to stick with that. I have way. If you drag it off a little bit. Way to displace this up a little bit, Let's try an open, high hat. Let's try a That's a cool one way that stops there. Yeah, I think maybe that's where we have to. Maybe I'll put that one over here, too. she actually way way right there. That's that's based on this. Let's get this really cracking. This has been this season, this track singing together. 6. Bass & 808 Walkthrough: not sure if base rate await. Let's figure this out first thing is first, let's try some base. A fear of these notes are first, though. Way, way, way to do this. And it's called cheating like create when you can steal. That's what I always say. So if you know what this is able to in hack cheat code, you can, pretty much just to convert anything to a melody. Let's see if it can figure out what it is. If not, we'll go back to playing the notes. But it felt like it was there. I wasn't feeling it was a little bit off a little bit off. All right, big money, big money. A. Let's see how this goes way. Now that we have that I'm certain everything things maybe. Let's try and eight weight after all, because depending how it goes, you could get crazy with this. What's right? Fish those up are. And then the spring these in. And so that means we pushes down. No, that's the only way to print. Based on you know what I'm gonna follow? It did normally just add my eight awaits when that man had kicks. But I'm just gonna follow my gut on this one and just add some weird stuff. Let's dio e. That's right. - Any more volume? Right way weighs about something that fits. - Let's try. I feel like this might turn out terribly. Let's try to glide some. No, my best. That awaits, but let's see where it goes. 7. Secondary Melodies: All right. So I downloaded a trumpet from Spice because I'm not sure exactly what to add to this, but I feel like maybe one another layer could be cool. Or maybe not. Maybe it's just the organ, and we keep it pushing in the vocals. But I don't know. I think you could use something. Maybe something cool for the hook. Like maybe just a little. I don't want something. I want a lot of something, but maybe just a little like a little trumpet stab or something. I don't know. We're gonna experiment. That's all these production is Honestly, it's just born big experiment. That's it. Makes it fun. You feel me? All right, let's jump into this. Let's first of all week. You ate this out and then let's add some fusion reverb to it. River A Let's get it. Okay, man, there goes is just audio. Cool way , way, way Maybe it's too much. Let's make this see if we need anything else. Yeah, we're getting there. This arrangement again. I'm telling you, watch this way. This is really gonna come through 8. Mixing & Mastering: so this joint might be a little over produced. But I do think I'm not sold on the trumpets. But I do think once you mix, it will make it a little bit easier to kind of feel where we need to go with it. So it was building out. I know I have this other part of the the sample to go to, but I'm gonna worry about that in a range right now is gonna mix the important stuff, Um, and then worry about that. Um, I just want to get a feel for kind of what's for me. I like to mix stuff because it helps me kind of figure out where, like, what's missing. But I don't love mixing on the goat. I know some producers do. Um, from this have a mix. It helps me figure out a little bit more. Kind of what? What I need. So, hey, what do you doing? Clicking like this could use a punch. Not that much punch. Uh uh. The feeling will come back and turn. These eight awaits down a little bit. Uh, no. - Hence there. So a little off. But it's cool. Ruling with no way way to blend into the track that stick out so much way , I think scythe, It doesn't make you wanna rap. You weren't doing it right. All right, let's arrange this. Let's get into it. I've been promising. You been teasing this whole time. Must do it. 9. Arranging The Beat: my sister and we can have some fun. And we can start to take things. They take things in, take things out. Um, yeah, let's just Ah, let's do the dang thing. Let's see how this goes. If we duplicate this, all I actually want to do is now just take this, going to lead this and then duplicate that like that. Come and grab this like that. Come and take this like this, then go apace. Thes like thes Cool. All right, so let's see how this goes. All right, let's take this out. This is gonna be a short beat because there's not a lot going on. What we're gonna be just some fun, some fun of funky hip hop stuff. So now what we're gonna do is is what we gonna do and duplicate that out. We're gonna delete this. Actually, we're gonna join this, going to join this joiner and then delete that way, way, - way Got the energy driving right now with the energy driving and way. Keep on rockin way. Hey! And that's when you that's going to eat everything. Whoa! Okay, so now this is where we're going to start. It's gonna start picking up. It's gonna start picking up. We're just gonna start get this when those bees just got to get weird with it. It's fun. It's high energy. It's funky. This funkadelic, it's fantastic. I'm getting out of my love fun way. - Oh , wait, Do some different way. Way, - E . Actually, if we really want to get weird with it, I'm actually take this. Doesn't move this over a little bit because you might want to really get weird with this joint just because why not? Right? A little bit low fi, A little bit kind of future funk. So let's let's duplicate that out. And then for this after that way, take that when we go. Whoops. We take this whole thing. If you would make this whole joint pitched up way, did this twice a right here, actually, um, take things because I just think that would be call. Hi. I open that I like another stab right there. Just a one offs. Trumpet stab. Oh, actually, I did like this that we're going down, I think wait. - And then is that we're gonna get it this, that we're gonna get it, and then I'll just, um, also leaf aid to beat out after that. Make a little altro, though. A poor outro. Maybe. Maybe it's only pitch it up. Oh, what we're gonna do is this what we're gonna dio, you know, at another reverb in another? Or maybe the CIA events. But this sounds like and we're gonna make this brigantine this river about right there, have a reverb tail, and we're also going to do this. We're gonna No way. Oh, that's how you do it. Thanks for sticking around. All hope that you learned a little something from that. Appreciate you guys. Um, that's kind of a funk love funk track. Looking forward to, ah, coming to you soon with some other stuff. Check in a minute Peace. 10. Conclusion & Next Steps: I hope that you enjoyed the course. If you did, please leave a review.
