In this FREE Bite-Sized class, we'll be going through a technique that has been used in animation for years: the smear.  This simple, but effective animation technique can help bring to life some really amazing movements in your animation!  This simulates a motion blur in a really simple way and can elevate your animation.  So take a few minutes and jump on your animation program to get a new skill today!

1. Welcome!: Hi. Welcome to a new steel share class for animation. This one is called bite sized information. What does that mean? That means that we're going to take a very simple subject and press it down into just one video way. Have a super amazing technique that has been developed over years for animation, and that is called the Smear. And the spear is something that is super fun. That is super easy to use but so effective and can do so many things from your animation. So let's jump right into the class. We're going to be developing a three part project that is very quick, very simple, But again, take your animations next level smears and simulating motion borders for quick action. So I hope you enjoy it. Let's jump right in and we will get to Thanks for joining me and I'll see you in the next video 2. Learning "The Smear": All right. So I wanted to take some time. Teoh actually not do really poor things like that. Take some time to cover some techniques. And so this 1st 1 is the smear. This is gonna be a shorter class, but wanted to be one of those no bite size things where, you know you're taking a small chunk of something. Means you're able to accounted by. Not really. Um and just really take a moment to I want something that's fun. That is really effective and that you can use with just about anything that you're doing. So this is gonna be something that is for quick action. And I think that is really important that it's a quick action. It's not something that you can do just at any time with something. But it's when something moves from here to here in one frame. Uh, how do you do that? And it could be an eye. It could be a quick look. It could be a best It could be. I know someone who is What the heck is that? I don't know, um, to be a fist. It could be a ball. It could be a pass to be a bat. Could be a swing, anything along those lines. So we're gonna take a quick look at how to do some of that some of those things and just really get into some some class action. So I'm gonna go ahead and drop my 33 frames. Um, this is going to be a pretty quick set up. It's not gonna be something that we take a whole lot of time on. Um, but we'll look at a few different examples of how we might use, uh, the sneer. So we'll take this first drawing right here, which I guess I can start off with two frames rather than the one. And what I really want to do is let's look at let's say that this is just gonna be ah, head turn. So I'm gonna take I went on my first layer. Yeah, you know, my second layer, same size, same distance apart. And then in between, I am going to have one that stretches. That's gonna be the ease out using out right here, using in right here. Notice these air on the same layer, and I'm going to kind of shrink them following the Ark of the motion and the features that I have on each are going to stretch. So right there, it looks like a cylinder. Excuse me. The cylinder. So right here, I'm going to have, um Let's give this guy a huge nose. It's very simple. Large nose is going to be smiling. It was mouth open, Maar. Guys drawing through super importance right there in that speculator spot on his on his face is going to help with something that would you drawing through. So let's go ahead and turn on the second layer. This is just so that we can see everything. Make sure that it's all and, uh, Flosses now, is it? And this is just the small we're not gonna be working on follow through. So we're just gonna be no letting it a little bit of a size difference most so for the most part, off similarly lies on each just a bit and one between the in between turns passive, the in between. We want to have it so that things air stretching and you know, if we were to do that frame If we turn this off, turn on, you turn on the first brain is going to be turned on in all frames, so make sure you leave first framed, blanked. So that's not have to worry about it being turned on. Every frame gets some on. Okay, so if we were to just play it back and forth, it's just right there. So we need something to help with the transition between the two frames. I need something to position between the two frames, but we have it set. So he's just looking back and forth between these two frames and there's nothing really happened, so we can save this for one second. Save this for one second and C meet quickly. Look, there's no transition between the two, so we need something to help us between the two francs to help with our minds transitioning . Take care of a few tweets on this one. Get it cleaned up. Just time It eso go between the two and I want his head to dip in the bottom. Someone out of frame turn on both but turned capacity down for each as usual. Turn on the middle frame and I want his head. His head is actually going to favor one side of the other, I guess. One of the main, a portion of his head, but his eye. So he's going to transition. So I'm gonna have his head tilting down a little bit and same over here so that he can ease into this spot over here. But remember, this is a quick movement. So it's not something that unnecessarily wanting to, uh, easy tons drawing is following us again, Thinking in three D the smear is a really fun move to use and something that can be really effective. So hiss his mouth is going to be lagging behind. But again, we're gonna be drawing all the way through here. We're gonna have multiple noise noses. Then we're gonna have his eye closing just a bit morning to stretch these people all the way through. Oh, few speculum, my lights throughout, colored in because again, we're not gonna see this in great detail and in this capacity, down to no delay, turn off these backgrounds and then see what this looks like. So now I can turn up or delete this first room, maybe no press play, so you get the feeling that it's going to be stretched out get a slight move, and then it leads you to where you want to look. So if you wanted to do some follow through, um, then you could get some wiggle on the nose delay on the nose. Um, you could ease in just a slight bit more. So let's do that. Uh, he's in just a little bit more on this knows, Turn your passed down here. Let's get this Ricky just a bit moments easing. Mr Slight. Let's start closing by just a minute. Turn out these two and this is gonna be another No room groups gets thrown up on that first frame, can lead then and goes all the way through to the end. Don't want that first dream on that last one. And then for this one right here, let's do one more. That was also no delay. Turn that first down 15%. This one is going to go past the nose and then it'll settle on the final frame. So that's no, it's my job. Seedings, drama. Nose up. Yeah, mouth up just a bit. Also block his eyes, opening just a slight bit. It's on that first brain at the end, slammin solid on through Get the field court. So I get the feeling that you did it kind of drawings, a ton of work in the back end. But it's enough to frame on in there. Thank you. Get the feeling you did a ton of work. But it is really just effective, um, to illustrate the speed of emotion and that you could do that. And you can do this in so many different ways with so many different things with the ball, with a punch with a quick head term, and it accelerates everything, and it's just really fun to use. So I would love to see anything that you choose to use Teoh. Demonstrate this and look forward to seeing projects in the space below, not along class, but hopefully helps you with some different things you can do and forward to coming out with a whole lot more classes like this really short snippets and seeing what everybody comes up with. Seeing project area soon 3. The Project: All right. So let's talk about the project. What exactly are you going to making for this project? Um, so, as you see, use a little gift right here. Just a fun thing to do. You know, this is this is really easy. All you do is trace over your words a few times and loop it. And you have some lively words. Always fun to do on something like a pictures, no relate type thing. But first, what I want first for you to look at is to do something like this. Something very simple. Usable. I had it levitate, spiked over the left and then settle down. I used anticipation. Well, I guess not. Have two speeches in so much as ease in and ease out. Um, and just had it sat down ball bounce, you know, think about, uh, the way that something moves and the way that you wanted to and move from there. So for your first project, this is really the only one that I want to see done. Similarly everything else I want to see your creativity, anything like that, just to demonstrate that you understand what to do. What? How it works. all that eso have something like this where it levitates up smears over to the side and then cells down another example of something that you could do again. I want I want to see something that you come up with doesn't have to be exactly this. It can be but full freedom on this one. What is an object that you want to see or play with or experiment with, to see what it would look like if it were smearing with a quick excuse me with a quick motion? Is it going to look like this? Is it going to stretch in a long gait and then snap into place? Uh, where's it gonna have some of those like overlay drawings. As you can see right here, if you look closely, you can see that I drew it several times and had the sword swiping. But the handle I drew multiple frames of eso that it has the motion blur effect. You know, the camera is catching a couple of different frames while it's well, it's moving through. Its park also noticed that nothing so far everything has an arc. So this is a slight arc, but it's moving in an arc pattern. Very, very few things move in straight lines. In real life, most everything moves in an arc. Um, if you don't use Thea Arc than it's going to Theo Robotic eso Bishop, he's narc in all of emotions. It's just gonna add, ah, slight appeal to what you're drawing. So this has an arch. Instead of going straight across, it goes down and up, okay. And then for the last thing, I want you to use color. I just used black and green. Doesn't have to be something many anything fancy. But I want you to have fun with it. And I want you to experiment with some ways that you might be, uh, working, working towards use color in your A final project. You know what? I want to see each one of these posted along the way. So open up a new project. Start your own project page in this class and post to it as you are progressing that way, I could give me feedback. You can show classmates what you're doing, inspire other classmates and be inspired by your classmates. This is something that is going a ton of fun. It's gonna be? I'm a whole lot of have different things coming out of this, and I'm really excited to see it. So please go post your projects.
