1. 01 Class Introduction: Hello, Aunt. Welcome to this skill share class dedicated to fashion illustration. My name is ever drug Arba. I'm fashion designer Andi. I'd like to show you a variety of ways in which he could bring depth to your fashion illustrations. If you are a creative hobbyist, this class is for you. If you like fashion this glasses being if you're a fashion student on, Do you like to explore different ways in which you could put your ideas together? Your sketch. But this class is fear on if you like sewing on you have got a lot off text house craps on two threads on. Do you want to incorporate them in an exciting new creative project? This class is also for you in this class. I'm going to explore off right of ways in which we could together figure templates in an easy way that doesn't require many hours drumming. We're going to explore different ways in which we could create exciting mixed media illustrations using paper, textiles, threads. We're also going to explore ecology duty, a free hand embroidery introducing, textured through bridge by hand techniques on my machine on we also going to touch upon a Plea k on how we can use a play K and text house, too. Bring those passion ministrations to another level. My dad of this class will not only learn how to create stunning passion illustrations with a twist, but you will also learn a right of ways in which he could work with pretty hand embroidery on play cake, as well as incorporated textiles in the old fashion ministrations. So without further do join me, let's start creating together. 2. 02 Things to Consider : before embarking on fashion illustration. There few things that we need to consider. First of all, what kind of feel do we want to create? So we want to look at what colors would want to work with. If you want to create something that perhaps a little bit more contemporary on, do you want, maybe something that's really cool. Use cooler, dark colors and minimum amount of bright colors. If you want to really, really cheerful mood, then make sure that you have really triple cause like bright yellows and pigs and reds and bright blue. Everything that's really happy and cheerful if you want to your fashion illustration to be really speak, then perhaps a black. A white approach would work well on having different shades of darks and grace and deep blues and work well, whatever medium you're working with. The other thing that you need to consider is watch you want use. Now, after this whole class, it will be more obvious to you what you want to work with most of what you want to explore . But just so you have some idea, what I will be using throughout this class are following things. Hey, pop magazines that could be fashion magazines. I could be catalogs that could be even things like cutting magazines, because when we're working with the actual components off the illustrations, not necessarily the body, my want to coach out. It's like florals from such magazines to help you with your inspiration now so you could call Pray those with your illustrations. The other things we're going to need if you're going for textile based approach is have a variety of scrap pieces or other textile want you use. If you do enjoy showing, you will probably have a lot of scrap pieces that you don't know what to do with, I said. Why live scribe Andi? I can use those what to look for. Texture Parton's colors again to complement the field that you want to create your registration where we're going to need things like a pencil Pence. You have any fabric pence that would be helpful. If you're working with fabric, you could use chalk, but it's not very precise using job on and have a bit more difficult. Also, if you have any colored coloring times off pence, that would work if you want to work with paper based call lodging. You might want to variety of paper colors on a variety of textures. These days, you could find they're easily scrapbook making booklets with pieces of paper that have got all sorts of coatings on colors on them, and you can use those lodging you want to have selling needles on threads of different thicknesses and colors. If you want. You use this kind of, I think, Andi, we'll delve into this later on in the lesson. If you want to work with trims in mixed media, be sure trappings like buttons or perhaps trims that softer like lace. For example, On throughout the lesson, I'll be showing you various examples of how have incorporated all these things together. And so you could soon get idea how convicts techniques and how you can incorporate wanting and lied about other things on. The third thing they might want to consider is what kind of a level you're at right now, and I'm not saying this to discourage your tell because this class is actually aimed. You want someone who may not like drawing for a long time or may not find it particularly are easy because we'll be doing very little margin drawing, but will be more about stitch, the texture, the coal ash you have accomplished. Illustrator. You may want to just use those skills for the base body, which we're going to go next and then just try and let things happen, which might be your challenge. It really depends on what you feel comfortable with and what kind of thing you want. You want to focus on when it comes to getting out of your conflict zone and pushing a little. So with these things in mind, let's crack on on. We'll start with the first thing that we need to do on our journey to exciting you textural fashion administration. 3. 03 Creating a Body Outline: to start with. We need to have a base to work with now. You could do different things. If you're very good at driving every day, you could draw your own pickup. No problem. A lot of designers actually used templates because it's quicker to go ideas onto that. Now that's more for coming up with ideas. The passion illustration. But now case we can use templates on you can find a love tip mates. If you just go on Google and look for passion templates that you can work with, I'll be completely empty on. You could work on trouble that you want to have the outlines very thing. You don't really think outlines because my visible late and I know which that I have got this book, which I think is really good on actually both died exists on this subject. But how little fingers template and it's got biggest called men's fashion Children's passion men's fashion on his passion of the fact that things like faces and feet for drawing shoes on. So this book, I think it's really good, and I'll put in the description below, just in case you want to best. But the easiest thing to do is just go, go, go on to get temporary, calm down on what we're going to do without temporary haters going to a piece of paper If you have gold book in particular and then just used the outlines and trace over that, that looks like cheating. But really, it's just a base. We will be doing a lot on top of that, so I didn't worry about that. The point of this class is to show you how you could add debt to things like how things like that. So, really, that's not the main point. The actual drawing. The figure is not the main point. If you have printed out a template, really faint outlines could just go ahead and use that you have found made for do outlines are quiet. Thank you. Could I change the mantra partnership? If you have skills, all you could just trade. That is, in a way, that here's my book on something else you can do is Teoh use magazines on That's another method. First of all, you could trace from magazines, but it's going to be a lot more difficult than if you just tracing a figure from black or white sheet of paper because I usually it's photographs in magazines, on the lines and the lines, and not quite so clear. So I need something like a really thin tracing people. I have used goal of cutting paper that's also fading light weight so I could see the out climbs you could do against the windows with that helps on. What you can do is just trace over that bigger and use that instead of getting a book. Or if you have any way you mess, we'll do this. Another thing that you can do is cut out the shape off, face all the body, or even if it's a detail like shoot, I could catch out and trace it. You could stick it on a plain piece of paper, and that could be the actual template, so the actual picture could be a template, and it can build. On top of that. I will show you different ways to do that. And these are two methods that I would use if I wasn't just tired from scratch to just a little figures and paces without any. I'd love to see your studies in that on the process that you go through when you are doing this. Especially if, you know, feeling particular confidence. Drawing biggest from scratch, you'd find the whole You do this, the easier it gets on your body. Remembers the movement that you need to do. It just takes a practice. That time I enjoy it might be lasted anything. 4. 04 Creating a Fashion Collage with a Twist: one of the ways in which it can create contemporary fashion illustrations is just collage. In two weeks, you can use a barrage of paper, cardboard and magazine pieces. A swells. Papa, I mentioned Dona. You can create a template using a figure found in a modest way already discussed that you can simply stick that bigger onto a sheet of paper. Build on that. You can also trace their onto the sheet and use the seal it. But what about? And perhaps make some of the single weight visible with coal ash piece stuck a little to this night. This will give a sense of three dimensionality you can even color or dark and eerie personal it like a shadow. - You can also reverse this idea and trace the magazine or figure he's partly onto a college piece, off cards or even fabric. At an area of radio experimentation clothes, for example, you can use lightweight paper. Such a Christian paper. Oh, here have used parchment paper as it enables me to see the silhouette of the close Indian. Just can they trace the supplies of the clothes and I can change them to run. I can also details such as pockets, buttons and so color is optional. You can also have something to the face. We'll explore working with faces in the next part of this lesson. - Besides paper card, you can use some of the techniques that we explored today. You can use glue, even if its fabric on for some off them. You can use a sewing machine or stitch down. We are going to talk about stitcher later on in this lesson. By using blue, make sure the fabric sticks problem. The first thing you can do is to trace the sections you want poverty replied onto, For example, on a body you have public for the main top did friend fabric for this dance separate fabric for the legs you can use magazine templates. You can also trace the shapes all from the tinkling, using thin paper on just as your Parchin, and then cut things out. Public perception. You can also use a double sided tape instead of blue. Fabrics are not appropriate as they may be too lightweight. Have a lot of holes on the glue mate, then go through two sets of public on this will potentially rainy administration, so test before planks that proper administration collages with the help of Luke, you don't actually need a law fabric, so public's craps would be perfect. This is a great way to use pieces that otherwise may be unusable. Once you have cut everything out, you gonna stick old pa bricks. I'm trims down with glue. Yes, if you are using Bunches of other heart trims its actual sick wins and Bates even things like Pence. For example, you may wish to use a glue gun as the glue bones will be stronger, I mentioned before flying to Rio UH. 5. 05 Working with Faces: you're working with a drawing as a base rather than a coal ash. You may wish to leave the face black. I focus on the rest of damage. You will find that in some fashion ministrations there is only one element off the faith Iess used. And it can be used in an unstated way. All by making a big feature of it. For example, a little squiggle around the eye area or a bulge color used on the lips. Of course, if you're comfortable with Dr Bases, then go for it. And just hoping you're working with a magazine base. You congee various things. You can cover the whole face only part of it with a piece of paper on to draw face features . On that piece, you can use plain paper. Oh, college paper. I take shit. Got this, could be done. And as day town Oh, us minimalist way. If you are only covering parts of the face, you don't need to draw on that part like I have done here. You can do the same with the head on a separate piece which may act to the head base or hot . You get a vanishing later using some of the other techniques I will cover later in this class. Another thing you can do is to cover the face with random shape, paper card off fabric nominate. Cover such areas such a G ice, for example, Make sure you can also use various pace pots from magazine and creative Kalash in a Frankenstein like Why don't mix much all of these methods and see which one and finally, last but not least, you can use stitching by so machine to cover the eye area with graduate colors like I have done here. We'll talk about machines stitching in a little bit, but I just wanted to show you that it is a possibility. 6. 06 Three Dimensional Fashion Illustration with Paper : before we move onto playing with fabric and stitch, something that we can do is actually used paper to create three dimensionality. To do that, we can cut out again different shapes in a variety of papers on, and we could fall them in origami like shapes on bond, then just put onto our boarding bases that we created early, that look quizzical on magazine templates on on something that's completely white. If you're working on Lee drawing, just don't play a white paper. You could create texture using white paper. If you take another sheet of paper and then trace certain sections from the outfit that you have grown, then you could add extra bids that you can use to fold up or down on blue to the original. Drawing, like 1/2 shown here on this boat, left everything up and create a very three dimensional effect. Even though everything's technically the same color, it doesn't just have to being white, but because normally we use white sheets of paper. This is the example I'm giving him Do you can also work with colored materials, for example, if you have any printed paper and then fold in certain ways that could create some extra texture. And how about if you had playing color one site and then a print on the other? So when you create a fault, you'd automatically create extra texture by the mixture off plane on Parton's. Together they true play around. Sometimes, if one holders enough to create interesting effects repeated over, you can create texture using paper in other ways to, for example, like I have done on this goulash. Here I cut long little strips of magazines. First of all, magazines will look very textured if they'll cut out, because there's lots of writing of colors, so that itself creates takes jump on. Then if you just stick part, we have cont on texturizing the rest of your fingers. You end up having something completely different, like up done. This French likes cut onto this piece clash. Here again, it's about playing on seeing what works for us, depending on what they want to create. With the old fashion illustration, you could use a variety off the things I have mentioned. Oh, you could make so much and play around with all of them together will be interesting to see how this gets incorporated in your luck. You can also use textile regard me on. I'm not going to go to dip on this. But my first class that I did hear skill share is introduction to text our gammy. So if you are interested in exploring this further when you have finished with this class, be sure to check out open link in the description of this class as well on that deals into that subject in depth on do you can use it not just in fashion illustration, but also follow other things like interior design on also on your own to create either work with the very best style, so I'll be should check out something that is of interest to you. 7. 07 Adding Texture to Fashion Illustrations and Collage : the writer things that you can do to add texture to your fashion administrations. Today, I'm going to show you a few different ways that include stitch and texture. You could introduce these kind of things using materials playing by hand. Or you could do in a second machine. Have a sound machine. Andi On terms up selling machine You don't have a need to always have threat. For example, if you create a collage to start with just using paper, a variety of papers. Andi, then just go on your sewing machine or use hands. Harry Needle on. Introduce holes in parts of the image where you want texture that automatically make things pop out a little bit on. But it will introduce another texture, just something that may have been a little flat. You can use holes with different damage you could inside the holes from the top of the paper or the bottom of the paper. No create different texture. You could play around with a variety of clusters of halls on different patterns on bond. As you can see here, this could create patterns within the garment on. It will elevate the whole drive if you have a sewing machine, you could do a couple of different things. First of all, you could use a normal sewing machine foot on. But if you do this, it will just grab hold up your paper. Your papa Ric Oboe. I will talk about this in a moment. Andi ill just guided through on. You could choose different types of stitches on depending on what stitches your machine office. The main thing to remember is that you could start with a thing that you feel most comfortable way and then move on to use more more techniques and build on top of what you've already learned. 8. 08 Creating Texture with Hand Stitch : you could create texture on your posh ministrations. Using ham, needle and threats to create texture, you can use a variety of threat thicknesses, colors and textures. For example, you could have loops over a drawing outline, which represents something. Check should such a piece of netware. I'll cut the close of the loops. The more dense and textured area will pay. You can play around with density within the same piece of garment on mixed colors. Once he have the loops along boggy area, you can come in with a pair of scissors that Shoni here, and this will create a shag it picked. Be sure to have a piece of fabric at the back of the paper if paper is what you are using as this will prevent the paper from tearing, and I think they can do. Is Jesus really, really fluffy knitting wool on a large needle? Guys that will I the side to side filling a guy and you have one, for example, on a genetic off all you can also inset small stitches for a truck I just sent to me toe work. Well, well, it isn't tied up to you. You can also use the cola genetic need explored earlier. Using fabric on instead of glue, you can use hand stitching to apply the fabric onto the clothes you have draw on Lee such inspections while sleeping other sections without any fabric on top. Oh, you could feel the whole thing stitching condemned. Here's no only as a way to bond the materials. Also trendy there. Another three methods that I'd like to show you. The 1st 1 is stitch by machine stitch. 2nd 1 is a click A using part Brick on the 3rd 1 is pretty handed, Reuter. 9. 09 Working with Basic Machine Stitches: If you have a sewing machine, you could do a couple of different things. First of all, you could use a normal sewing machine foot Andi, if you do this, it will just grab hold up your paper. Oh, your fabric oboe. We'll talk about this in the moment. Andi Ill Just guided through on. You could choose different types of stitches on depending on what stitches your machine office. Now, something to consider is that if you stitch on paper, if you are using really dense stitch, your paper would probably get destroyed by the machine because there's lots of holes on a dense stitch would require more stability, something that you can do genuinely. If you are working on to paper using stage where they using hand sewing all machines, sewing is to back your paper with fabric for extra stability. You will see that if you don't have the fabric a lot of the time, people get destroyed. If you do, things will stay in place because the fabric will keep hold of things. Probably something else you can do is use normal foot, as were made. Mention cool to enhance illustrations you've already started. Now it could be onto just normal piece of paper where you've already got your outline on. You could use just a normal stitch to stitch along the lines to just make them a little bit more bold to give them another dimension. If you like something that you would consider, even if it's a straight normal stages also to birth something on the back of the material some fabric, preferably because they'll definitely mean that, you know, just going to perforate around the figure. Another thing you can do with this is also to introduce a different types of stitches inside the where you've drawn just to create texture on patterns. For example, if you have drawn jeans or trousers, you might want to introduce lines. They don't have to be perfectly straight, but just something to indicate that maybe they're stripey, for example. In fact, if you have a little bit of wonky lines, if you like a so then they don't all go completely straight alongside each other. That will indicate the movement withdrawing. Andi will give her extra debt. You could also do things like cross shapes. Also, you might want to experiment. What other stitches you have on your machine on Add to that another thing that you could do with normal sewing machine foot is to have a stitches just normal stage. But huge Onley stage a little bit, and then you could live quite a lot of excess off thread and on cut. Just trim the bottom on. Keep going like I have done on this sleep. Andi that will look like something supposed to be textural. It's perfectly good for something like that where coats the half go extra trim. Andi. It just looks a little bit more realistic in that way and a lot more expressive. Something else you could do is to stitch on top of collages that you have created using magazines. Paper are mixed between that on drawing Well, you could color the parts off the collage we have drawn. You don't have to on. Then you could use the technique of just shown you to create outlines and and underline the actual lines off. You're drawing on the styling of it. In that respect, you could have colors that complement the colors have already introduced, have introduced colors. You can also have completely contrasting colors. Oh, you might want to introduce a little bit of a clash of color. That would be a thing more appropriate to adage actual coloring inside rather than the outlines. But of course there are rules, really is completely up to you. 10. 10 Fashion Illustration Through Freehand Embroidery Basics: something else that you may want to play around with his free hand embroidery, which were introduced extra texture to the inside off the styling off the government, for example, that you have or facial features or on accessories like shoes, bags, oh, bells, perhaps a little makeup. I want to accentuate a color or a particular texture. The first thing that you can do is to play around with the techniques that I'm going to now show you in terms of what you can dio with free hand embroidery. Andi from there, you could then play around on to actual administration, and you need a specific foot for this kind of thing of gold variation of this right here Andi with this foot does is it doesn't go all the way down when you stitch, but it leads the fabric free up so you could grab hold of it and move it around. Um, on. You could do a variety of things with that, and that will show you in a moment the different things that you can do once you have. It's told the pre hand embroidery foot. It may look different for you. Are there various types bigger, the whole more movement you can have. Mine has gone on open space of the front because I want to have notes of freedom when I moved my fabric or sheet around Onda. Um, this works perfectly for me, but if you want to be a lot smaller, more precise, you wouldn't want to go for a machine foot every hand embroidery that has got a small make sure it's compatible with your sewing machine. When you look up type of what they need are right down the model sewing machine. It should say it like mine says that here on the front of the machine, it could be on the side on the back. A swell chances are you already have one of these. Mine didn't come with my machine, so I had to vote. But separately on some a machine feed for free hand embroidery compatible with a variety of machines. A smile. We'll make sure it's compatible. Your particular model of machine. When you use pre hand embroidery, you could use a hope to trap the fabric and the materials using on the hoop, and it's much easier to move the hoop around instead of holding the fabric whilst you are working on embroidery. It also means that it's safer to use because your fingers a lot less likely to be in court in the needle, very near the needle. If you keep hold of sometimes it's more practical to know have a hoop. In my case, my hope is a little bit bigger. Andi and I have to take the foot off every time I change the hope, which is fine, because if I am trained to fill the hole space in the on going for something really big and grand, then I'll take a while anyway, so that that's fine. But for little things you may know wish to have a hoop, I would suggest that you're very careful, especially if you're working. What smaller pieces? If you're working wet paper, I would suggest that you don't use a hook because you'll get credit called You could have caused on the paper. But it's hazardous to do that on the I am temperature that using Onda Um, also depending on what you've backed the paper with because they did, you would back it like we said before, it's so great it to do that with this technique as well, then, in depending on what your back it with that might act differently when you are pressing it . I am so ideally, don't use a hoop If you're using paper, went working with free hand embroidery. Using a sewing machine, you are likely to use a few different colors wherever colors he is. It's a good idea to have a couple of bobbins rating. One. When DACA color I'll be using black. I'm one would lie to color. I'll be using cream for that. So if you are working with colors there on the darker side, then use the dark robin and neath Andi. If you're using really bright and cheerful in light colors, then you can use the light bobbing. It doesn't have to be the same color. It just needs to complement what you have going on on the 11. 11 Fashion Illustration Through Freehand Embroidery Techniques: you could play around with a variety of stitches there into having your machine. Andi, move around your materials to go. But the most straightforward thing to do to start with is to just use the normal stitch. Just a straight stitch, perhaps medium length 323 heart millimeters and you could have a play. You could start with the smallest ege, then around with longer stage and see the difference on a few things they could do. If you wanted to create something that circular, you just need to move the peace off fabric. Oh, paper or whatever material using just move around in circular motion for May I find that works really well. Anti clockwise counterclockwise. Andi, if you are working with a who will be much easier to do that particular thing, this is a really good technique. Choose if you have got things like polka dots onto the government, they you have outlined to draw. Oh, anything that has got clusters. It could be really, really good for things like pompon, so base of a pump on. And then you could introduce texture to that long, long NATO using hand stitches and will perhaps which could work really well. Another thing you can use it for if you are focused on our drawing faces is to use it for ice on just any circular details that you might want to put in, say, hair or a print off waiver clothing you're drawing. Or, um, perhaps if you're doing something like a bag, it's a clutch bag. Maybe the fastening of that bag. It's limitless. Where you can use this particular technique for something else you could do is to go backwards and forwards using the hook will make it again. Easier to do then, if you don't have a hope that works either way. Just very careful. Andi, With this technique, you could play around with the different types of stitches they have on your machine, and you'll have completely different results. They all look quite textured. If you have embroidery foot, then there's a lot of freedom of movement. And so unless your hands are so so still in a moving perfect line, then there will be variations every time you go back and forth. Andi, that's the point, actually, because if you just wanted straight lines without any takes you to them, you would just use a normal machine foot because that's why it's built to do, and I think you can do is go back and forth. But Onley ensure distances on, Then move on to the site and do that again and thinking going now these kind of things are good. If you are introducing Parton's inside garment, for example, or if you are adding strands to hair or the shorter one could be very useful if you are creating things like eyebrows or wanting to add a nice call, the detail to say, shades on the lips. I. Some designers don't even draw all features that down face, but focus just on one like, for example, the mouth. And so it could be that your drawings actually are black and white. We only want to little bit read on lips. And yes, you could do that just using a pencil or mark a panel. Something like that, however, with Rihanna Breuder look a lot more interesting. Something else that you can do is use metallic thread now metallic threads a bit different to what you considered normal threats. Normally, we use things like Spam Pallister because is very, very strong type of threat. If you're using cotton threat, that's all OK, but it's no quite are strong on, but something like embroidery illustration. That may be okay. I have a lot of vintage threads, and some of them are in fact fortune. But I do use a lot off pump A list genius having stronger so metallic threads are spun very differently. They created very differently on DSO. Because of that, they're structure is a lot less strong. I'll show against my child because you could see, but this is, Ah, a silvery metallic thread and it's that easy to snap. So you need to have fairly lose tension if you are working with this kind of thread. But the results are really pretty. I would personally use it if I have got something a bit more block color underneath on, then use the metallic thread. Introduce a nice, pretty kind of, um, lines that are very feminine. You can also use two colors at once. Now you could get a double needle and do that. That will give you one type of effect, Uh, or you could use the to together, and that is something I don't know what I've come up with Juncture haven't looked up, but something that came into my head one day. And I thought, What happened if I actually put two types of threads through the needle through the same needle and stitched Andi, it looks pretty cool, Andi, that could work so well. Imagine if you are driving something that's knitwear or something that's supposed to retake cheese like texture coat, for example, or textured socks or something like that that would look so cool to have two different colors. It's all about experimentation on playing around, really giving in these techniques, so you decide where you want to use them for, but make sure that you play around with them first before you actually start working onto cloth or paper for your illustrations. 12. 12 Fashion Illustration Through Applique: Once you have mastered embroidery through free hand motion, you can also play around with extra texture created by fabric, and you can use public scraps for this. We all have them. If we have a saying room, we'll have a little public. Ben miners are on the large side, actually, Onda always try and think of ways in which I can use my scraps on something that you can. Jeb is used them to create applique A on that, like a could be fairly flat, and the texture could come from the stitches that hold it down onto whatever you are playing it, too. If you are creating administration, that's got more to do with face and hair. You could create floral designs that go on to the head through a click. A Andre Hahn embroidery on. You could even add things like little trims like little beads or sequins. And he could do that by hand. So it's ready, using the techniques through machine and hand embroidery. And also, in a way, it's using collage techniques because just because we're working with heartbreak doesn't mean we're not creating a collage through the medium Open a k. You could also apply things like little strips of fabric out to create something that similar to fringing. You could do it as a trip on to close the you driving, for example, on him off, Scotch him, choke the bottom sleeves. You could do it as part of hairstyles. It's another technique. Thank you in ways you here, I using strips they just want to hang. It could actually use just to normal machine, for you don't need to use hand embroidery because they trap them in place. You could use either, Really. It's again all about playing around and seeing what works for you and what kind of feel you want your fashion illustration to get what kind of style and you want to give it. It would really depend a new personal style. And that's why Sky's the limit with these things. This is why I really love creative project, because really it is completely up to you what you do, and you always bound to create an interesting result that's different. What anyone else would do 13. 13 Final Thoughts : Thank you very much for watching. I hope you have found this useful.
