In this video Sam explains how he made our biggest track 'Finally'. We released this on Spinnin' Records in 2015 and it's been a highlight in our DJ-sets ever since. Sam produced this in FL Studio and he'll explain how he made the intro, break, build-up and drop.

1. Introduction: What's up, guys and welcome to a new industrial video. This time I'm explaining finally, our most popular trek on Spotify ever with ONE, think waste over 25 million streams, right? Even more. I think 26 million, maybe even, maybe even 27 million. It's a trick I did back in. Let's check it out. I started this project on the 13th of January 2015. So it's a really old one, which is also the reason why I haven't Nate this video yet, because this project was made in FL Studio ten with a lot of old compressors, old feces, old samples. So it took me a really long time to do finance Mecca, my old laptop where I used to produce on. Then make sure all the plugins, we're not corrupted, that all the samples were enough corrupted. But now I'm here with a slightly different version of the original projects because I had to change all the plug-ins and stuff. But yeah, here it is. Finally are finally projects. 2. How did this project start?: So maybe I should start with setting you guys how it is project came to be. I was talking with the ANR of spit and records and he told me that he still heads the parts of finally by Sasha penicillin lying around shut it means the focal, like not to the original vocal, but a raison vocal, the piano, and the base. So this one. And this one. And this one. Well, yeah, that one. You all hit that line around from an earlier track by barbie more and Oliver Twist. And he told me, you can go ahead and try something with it. So that's what I did back in 2015. And immediately, if you look at the project right here, you can see that the project is really small. There's literally one till 17. There are 17 tracks going on with still a lot of space in between them. So it's one of my empty is projects ever I think. Also, yeah. No, it's that it's been made in 2015. So I use to produce in a way different way that I'm producing right now. And if we go back to the project infrared here, you can also see that I only spends about ten till 11 hours audience. So that makes it one of my, I think, quickest projects ever. And I think that's pretty cool. Seem, because if you compare this project screen I have in front of me right now to a project I make nowadays. You can really see that I complicated it for myself over the years. And as you can see, maybe that's not really necessary because these projects, which is our most successful projects, is also one of the EMT is projects. So less is more is a true statements. Yet again, what you also notice if I zoom in a little bit on a project here, is that there's no other ideas. This idea right here, this pattern, that's the only solid idea I hads. And normally with these kind of videos, i and go through all the other ideas I had said before, the final idea. But that was not necessary here because there were none except for one actually, there was one other idea and I'll just show it to you guys. It's this one. So that's the other idea. I hats. And immediately after I came up with this idea, which obviously became the final idea. Again, nowadays, I will, it's probably makes 1020 other ideas before really pinning on that final idea. But I think back in the days, I was just happy with this one and I just continued producing the further track with this idea in mind. 3. The melody: So how did I come up with as metadata? Well, it's been a long time ago, but I think my process, and nowadays it's still the same as back then. And that is just removing the idea or removing anything that's happening in the drop except for the drums maybe, and maybe part of a vocal. And then just literally taking up your phone, walking around in your living room and just making up melodies that will fit that build up. So in this particular case, I already heads the piano, the focal, the base here in the break. I made a buildup, which I'll go into a little bit later in this video. And I, yeah, completely maids the trek until the drop. And I just played this parts on repeats. That slipped running wild ideas. And you make a couple of ideas. Then I returns to FL Studio and I created a new project. A new project. I created a new pattern called its melody, or maybe I usually call it. And then I just started listening to the individual melodies that I had and started drawing them in air. So I did that for a couple of melodies and then just pick one that I really liked ends for most arrest. And that's what this final melody, wallace. So that's how I came up with a melody. I haven't changed that way of creating melodies, so I still do that every day when I come up with something I think is cool. And it could be the tiniest things. You know, it could be little vocal hooks. It could be really small tech house basis from full-on to Fulang melodies. You know, it could be anything as long as you recorded because else it's just something in your heads, you know, it's nothing physical. 4. The intro: Another disclaimer might apply it to this project because it's so old, so you probably are going to hear some clicks and crags every now and then. So I don't mind goes. But yeah, let's just listen to the intro red here. And as you can see, part of the intro. Intro is really empty. The only thing that's making this intro memorable is the part of the vocal chop right here, which is something that's also in the original bunches of penicillin. Yeah, it's just a kick with a close hi-hat loop and the clap and debt focal chop. And a lot of times I see producers really overproducing The, their interests. And that's not really the thing of an intro or now term. You know, it should be minimal. That's other DJs can easily mix in your track into another trig. And yeah, I think in this intro, this particular intro, this is a 3D solid intro, which is memorable, but also really easy to mix in. Yeah, then later, later in the intro, you can see right here that there's another part of the vocal coming in and there's whole parts. And right here is just kind of introducing the first break, I think, because you know, under piano is already in here. The V J heads these thirty-seconds do mixing the trunk. And yeah, if we mix in this wreck and Arshad's, It's always we look this parts. We then bring in the KEK in this parts. And then the other track is already faded out in this park. So if you are struggling with making intros, just think of how a DJ world's mixing your trek. What's, what's called a loop? What part could he take from the intro to repeats and zoom more fit into the mix without it sounding too hectic or with too much melodies. 5. The break: So one of the benefits of working on this trick was that's, I already had the entire break. The break is literally the PNO, which is from the original from SESAC penicillin to vocal from sets up Aniston and later on the base, which is also clones from the original. And the only thing I added was a snap late around. So I think that's also one of the reasons that this project didn't take that long because, you know, one of the most important parts of the track was all ready mades. Of course, I had to create everything around it. It's so one of the most iconic things off this track, I think. And also the reason why it works so well on the dance floor is because of this insane buildup. 6. The build up: So what makes this buildup so iconic, I think is well a, it's pretty long. But also to elements that are in it. We have the last part of the B&O being repeated. Then we have a part of the vocal which is being repeated. Then we've snares. Then we have the snares. That's what the riser altogether. It's just one big cluster fuck of different elements. And then even later on there's another instance of a vocal coming in. Which for me as a surprise that, that worked because normally two vocals on top of each other, that doesn't work. Well in this case it does. So of course, the riser here is pitching up, which is fairly common. Thickets silence, right? It's yeah. Just just some presets which is being pitched up, I think 24 semitones and total, yeah, it goes from minus 12 to plus 12, which is also a pretty big change in pitch. So that I think that really adds to the crescendo effect of the build-up. 7. The drop: Yeah, if we then go to this second vocal right here. One of the most important parts of making sure that this drop fits in with the break is this part of the vocal right here. So we have the list yes shouts just before the drop. And then we have this little repeating parts, which kind of Hoover's around the drop. And if we didn't have their parts, the drop, what's a sound pretty empty, but B, it will be really disconnected to the entire idea of the trick. You know, the entire idea of this track most deaths. It was kind of an homage to sets have Tennyson's finally. And if he just removed a vocal right here, it would just be, you know, two parts. Like like a mesh up, some shorts or bad mesh up. So yeah, this repeating part right here. That's very important. And it's a way to create that is to throw your vocal in slides. Sex, which I've already done in some other videos. But yeah, I can do it again real quick. So what you will do is load up an instance of slice x or any kind of slicing plug-in. You trow in vocal. You slice it up and you make it shut up. And then it's start slicing and then you just literally look for parts. You don't even necessarily have to do this it into slicing PST, that you just simply look for a part, which yes, you'd like. And you just use like this one for example, I'm just exploring around right here and you can take this one and you go and copy it. Take that, you know, something like dance you adds a sigh chaining effect or something, and you're already there. And sometimes there's not really a part in the focal That's repeats well or sits well as a hoovering channel over your drop. What you can do then is use pulse stretch and small stretch is also pretty common popular technique normally to create like ambient sounds. But it also works really well for this kinda stuff. So you also have VOC options for it. But I personally, I don't use that. I always use ICT for dads. And if I load up the vocal and yeah, you can just search for a parts that you think sounds nice if it will be repeated. Got maybe it is park. Take dads, you select it all, and you apply a pulse French. If you don't know audacity, by the way, and you can just download it for free. It's I think the best free audio editing tool out there. So as you can hear, what Paul stretch does is it's insanely stretches out the sounds. But it doesn't give debts. Kind of mentally effects. If you would know muddy, stretch something outs in FL Studio. It's kinda fills out the gaps that's that are created if you stretch something out. And how FL Studio deals with debts is by creating those mentally sounding artifacts. But Paul stretch, kinda smooth instead out or something, which makes it sound better. So obviously this is not really a good example, but if you go through your vocal track with this effect applies, you can easily find something that's will sit well in a hoovering kinda way over your drop. So another funny trivia thing about this trick is that the breaks there is break snare is actually the standard snare you get when you start off FL Studio for the first time. So that's like it's, it says snare basic as well. So I think that's pretty funny that I used it. It sounds good. So why not? 8. Sound design: So unfortunately, because this is such a old projects, I can't exactly remember how I made these sounds, but yeah, I can just go to the individual sounds and tried to think how I felt back then. So one of the most important parts of this melody is, you wouldn't say it. But this base step right here, because debt based step is literally failing debts, voids. That is there. At the beginning of this melody. I think when I created this melody first, I head, it's in my mind's like this. So that's the same sound is to base. So I felt that it was kind of confusing. So I really needed a different sounds there instead of the same base sounds. So that's why this sound is there. And if we go to the actual sounds, you can see that it's made in massive. And all these sounds are made of mesh if except for one sample-based sound right here. And this sounds actually pretty interesting because for some people it sounds like there's a chorus effects all over this sounds and they're not wrong. But also maybe a little bit. Because you can see here as oscillator one ands two, that the oscillators are detuned. This first oscillator is mine minus $0.30 from a whole octave. If you don't know massive that well. With these parameters, you can a change how this sounds pitches. So this is, this is a standard pitch. So normally you would say that these two sounds would be out of tune with each other. And if you have a sharp air, you can also hear that they are not really in tune with each other. But what's funny is if you're using the same oscillator as I'm doing right here. And they are both Wudi oscillators. They kinda fight with each other. They are. Yeah, I would you say that it's basically the same as a chorus effect, but it's not actually a course effects. So, so it's pretty aware it's technique which gives it a certain sounds, which isn't exactly chorus but does sound like it. And yeah, I think it's one of the most iconic sounds off this track. And it's also pretty UK bass oriented. That's, I think, which also gives a drop, a cool vibe, I think. So that's what's going on with the base step. If we then continue, you can see here that we have the base itself. Maybe I should just notice e. So all those sounds together make up for the first parts of the drop. So even for young 2015 weasel, I think you can already see that there are some layering going on here, which I was quite impressed with when I opened this project again. And yes, you can see here if we listen to the elites, the layering is also quite important for it to sound. So I also David for a reason. And yeah, if we go to all these individual sounds, you can see that I think, especially here, they're all just copies of one another with different oscillators. I think that's a really an easy way to layer your, your sounds because you already have a pretty good basic sounds. And the only thing you wants to achieve, my layering it is making it sound fuller. So an easy way to do that, of course, is then to just copy that instance of massive or assign author or whatever. And it's changed the oscillator. So that's the sounds is not completely difference, but it does add to the fullness and richness of your sounds. 9. Processing: If we go to the processing, you can see that this is pretty much a joke. Like when I started this project, but after all that time, I was surprised that's the sound will still sounding OK in my ears. Widths, debts, amount of processing on it. So unfortunately I had to change some stuff here because I didn't have the original viz t's on this computer. But there was initially only a isotope ozone tree, this channel. And you can do a lot in that in that view, Steve, but there was no compression or something going on or any compression going on on the lead balls, for example. So that was quite surprising to me. And yeah, I true sham on here show that the project sounded somewhat okay. But yeah, that was a surprise to me. And I think that's also one of the biggest learning points of this video. Which was also learning points for me actually, because nowadays I spent way more time on the projects because well, I think there's a couple of reasons. One of the reasons why when we released this trick, we weren't doing this for a living yet. And nowadays, we do show there's more and more baggage onto my back to create something that is of good quality. You know, I think back in the days back in 2015, we were just more screwing around instead of always trying to create a quality trek. But still, one of the learning points for me for this track was that sometimes you should just go widths wants to first ideas you have. Because maybe there's a reason that, that idea came to your minds. At first. You know. Maybe. That means if you are making a melodies and you're coming up with a shirt, a melody. Maybe you should use detonated the because death one is the one that clicked, which you naturally, when you first started creating melodies. 10. The drums: So the project is pretty basic and so are the drums. If we go to the actual drums, plus iIt's clamp open, I had went clamp. They're not really that interesting, but they are solids. If you're a university patron or higher, you get d samples. So we're gonna make a post after uploading this video where you can download all those samples. So go check that out. Oh, there's also this loop, by the way. So yeah, check it out. So I think the biggest learning points, at least for me, is that I don't have to over-complicate projects so much. You know, sometimes I literally spend more time creating ideas than I spent in this entire projects. And sometimes she should just listen to their gods go which our guts that sets.
