1. General essential oil safety : Welcome to the safety module today. We're going to get started. We're gonna dig right in. I first wanted to say about essential oils is that although they are very powerful and very useful, you shouldn't use them as your primary treatment for a serious condition. Essential oils are really right now. They're made available for comforting measures only. Having said that, there really helpful. And they can be a really useful addition to your supplemental therapy that you're going to choose for yourself with your team care providers. Go ahead and work with the clinical aroma therapist as part of your health care team. Somebody who is a knowledgeable about essential oils can really be a benefit to you when you're dealing with a big problem. There are a lot of holistic physicians that you can choose from to help you with your treatment program. And in fact, many elop a thick that is conventional doctors. A lot of them are open to a supplemental therapy such as aromatherapy, so just be sure and ask. Even the essential oils come from nature. It's still possible to have an allergy to them, so just be aware that of that it's important to know. Also, results and benefits from using essential oils can vary from person to person and are guaranteed. This means that it could take you a few different tries of custom blending to find out something that's gonna work for you directly in general. Don't apply essential oils under alluded to your skin. Dilute them into a carrier oil before you put them onto your skin. This will reduce your chance of sensitization. It'll reduce your chance of irritation. Also, it'll make your investment of oil last longer. Exceptions to this are would be would be in a first aid situation. Lavender and teacher. Why not over using your oils in Anyways? Variety is the spice of life. Be aware of oils that are photo toxic or possibly photo. Toxic photo Toxic is a word that describes something that happens to you when you use an oil on your skin and then go out in the sunshine and it causes you to get a severe burn it . It increases your sensitivity to the sun. That's what it means. And you need to remember that because that question is going to be on your safety quits. Be aware of non skin irritants. A big one here is clove, another one that's very common to be irritant IHS cinnamon. It could be anything for you, so just if you notice that you have a problem with an oil. Just make a note of it someplace there. Geranium is generally non irritating, but I know of someone who hasn't has a problem using it, even one drop, actually. So it can be an individual concern, so keep track of those kinds of things. And here's the big one that you've all been wondering about. Don't eat essential oils, surgeon essential oils or toxic and can cause bodily harm Have taken internally. One really good example of this is eucalyptus. I think I referred to it earlier in the first module. There have been recorded fatalities involving ingesting eucalyptus oil, and sometimes it doesn't take a lot to make you very, very, very sick. So please don't, especially with eucalyptus, keep it out of the reach of Children. Essential oils, air potent, and some may burn or irritate your digestive tract on the way down, so that's another reason not to eat them. Oregano was a good example of this. Some of you who have tried eating oregano already have found this out for yourself. It's crazy. Essential oils and water don't mix, so if you're adding a drop of oregano to a glass of water. You're going to still get that burned because they don't mix the food. Interesting uses essential oils, but they have certain elements extracted to make them safer. The for public consumption and peppermint is an example of this experiment is another example. Be careful not to overuse your essential oils. When you're working, use a well ventilated area and take fresh air breaks. Often some essential oils might cause a headache. One, for example, for me is jasmine. I need to make sure that I only used Jasmine for a little time and then I have to pack it up. You might experience a type of toxic buildup if you overexpose yourself to essential oils. Some signs that indicate that you need to rest from using essential oils include headache, nausea, skin irritation or the just feeling that it's been too much for you. 2. Using essential oils during pregnancy: if you've discovered that your newly pregnant congratulations very excited for you and for your new little one, there are some special things that you need to know when you're trying to use essential oils during pregnancy and postpartum. The first thing that I would like to share with you is that it's a very good idea to stay away from using any essential oils at all during the first trimester, especially if you have a history of miscarriage or if this is your first pregnancy and you do not know how your body will respond. If you're using essential oils after the first trimester is safely past, you can start experimenting with certain essential oils. Citrus essential oils are the safest ones and lavender and camomile and some other ones that you'll see listed on your downloadable resource. We sure to pick this up because it will go over essential oils that are safest, and I will also have a separate section on essential oils that you should have way totally during pregnancy. Certain essential oils are very useful during labor, for example, jasmine or clary sage as they can induce uterine contractions. There are also some essential oils that are very helpful for postpartum. This also includes Claris Agent Jasmine. These air particularly hot full for helping dealing with pain or any kind of emotional trauma that you may have had during the birth, as well as postpartum depression. There is a lot of controversy surrounding safety of essential oils during pregnancy. You'll notice that even different books disagree about which oils are safe or not safe. And I just want to point out that if you're uncertain about using an essential oil and if you're worried about it, just don't use it. You can wait until after there's lots of time after your baby is born. To start enjoying these oils again, I will tell you that there is a few essential oils that you should not use if you are breastfeeding in particular peppermint, because it will drive your milk supply. So if that is your goal, by all means, go ahead and use it. But if you want to have that available, stay away from Parliament. When you're ready to use essential oils on your little one, I would say Wait just for a couple of weeks to a month, or even six weeks after they are born because you want to bond with your baby, and the best way that you can do that is to have your own smell. And if you are always having any essential oil around you, your baby won't get to know you. And you really want to have that special time of bonding with your child. Don't forget to get your down a little resources and print off your lists. 3. Cancer care and essential oils: I wanted to include expanded section on cancer care and aromatherapy. For those of you who have had your life changed in heartbeat in a way that you did not plan for, you might be feeling a lot of different things. Shocked like it can't be happening to You can't think about things you might be worried about making future plans. You might be feeling angry and frustrated and helpless and terrified. You might be in pain and you might feel very, very alone. I just want to cover a couple of different things that you can do. If you want to use essential oils during your treatments, you're putting them into a diffuser. Be sure to put less oils into your diffuser and only run it 10 minutes out of the hour. You don't need to run at full steam, and you don't need to blast your air. You might. You might be sensitive to smell, especially during times of chemotherapy, so you just want to take that into consideration. If you plan to use essential oils topically, be sure to do with them highly, especially if you have been doing radiation treatments and your skin has been burned make sure that you only use organic essential oils and organic carrier oils. I highly recommend that if you want to do this that you work with a qualified woman therapist. There are a lot of things that you can do. You need to have somebody specialized with this field to help you do it properly incorrectly. Your sense of smell will very likely be affected during chemotherapy treatments. I just have a tip for you about this. Don't eat your favorite foods or use your essential oils for a few days before and after chemotherapy treatments. The reason for this is that you don't want to create a negative association with using those things and why they smell in the way that they make you feel. So have a backup plan for that and save your favorite things for when you're feeling a little bit better. Another thing that I would highly recommend is having a discussion with your doctor about using essential oils during your treatment. The reason why is because some essential oils interact with medications. For example, taking ginger. It is a natural coagulant, which means that it thins your blood. So while a lot of people want to take ginger for nausea, just check with your doctor to make sure that it's not going to conflict with any medication that you're currently taking. Additionally, there are certain essential oils that you should just not be using during this time. If you have any type of cancer, you should not use Aniseed Bay cinnamon belief, not make basil clothes fennel well and star knees. And the reason for this is because thes oils are known to have some hormone altering things with them and so you just don't want to. You don't want that to be a factor in your care. Additionally, if you haven't estrogen dependent cancer, you should be avoiding all the previously mentioned oils plus the following, and there's quite a few here, so I'm not going to read them all. But you can see this, and they will be in your demo edible resource so that you can have a copy of them and you can put them out. If you have a cancer that affects men, you should avoid the oils that we mentioned first for general cancer, plus the following ones. Angelica basil disip combo va Mastic pine, wild thyme and Rose geranium. I also just want to point out here that or aromatherapy can be a really special and important part of your care and recovery program. Studies of showing that aromatherapy can significantly impact the emotional well being of a cancer patient. The reason why it's helpful is because it helps people cope with the following things. Insomnia, pain, chemotherapy, induced nausea. It can help you get your appetite back. We can help you relax, and maybe even most importantly, it can help you fight off feelings of depression, which all these things affect your immune system, which in turn affect your ability to recover. And we definitely want to promote all the possibilities of recovery. So here's some good news. Instead of just saying what things to avoid, I also want to give you tools so that you can know some positive things that you can do here. So mood lifting essential oils include mandarin lemon balm and orange. Now understand that women bomb is also known as Melissa Essential oil, and it is actually quite expensive. That may be a factor when you are doing a blend like this but Mandarin in Orange. There definitely very accessible pain. Killing oils include camomile lavender, peppermint and rosewood. If you were to mix these up, I would say lavender and counter while together would go very nicely. Peppermint or lavender go very well together, and rosewood would go quite well with the lavender and camomile as well. Camomile, lavender and most water, all from the front of previous list but also additionally here is actually actually is also very helpful for skin care. So if you are experiencing itchy skin, these actually all these things would be very helpful for irritated skin. On the relaxing list, we've got a few trees here. You can see three types. You'll notice that pine is not on this list because it is contra indicated for meal cancer . Now I recommend mixing these up between the lists so you could put I don't cedarwood and lavender together or 11 during Langley together. So just feel free to know what's on the lists, and you can experiment with something that suits you for what you currently need. Stimulating essential oils can be very helpful when you feel like you need to get your appetite back, because, remember, you do not want to stop eating. You need to have proper nutrition during this time, so even though you feel like you want to eat, it's important to take in nutrition. So Bergamo was at the top of my list here because it is also uplifting. It's a natural depression fighter. Geranium and cardamom, orange and tea tree are also, while stimulating just a few self care chips. It's important to ask your doctor a lot of questions about what's happening to you. What you could do. Talk with your doctor about exercises that you can do that will help you. And the reason why you want to explore this area of exercising is because of helping you improve your circulation around your body. It can help with digestion. It releases endorphins, which in turn help you feel better. It can help you keep your muscle mass, which you do not want to lose, if at all possible. And if you can get outside and even walk around, getting the fresh air and sunshine would be really good for your mental health. So have a chat with your doctor about exercise. If it's at all possible, it's highly recommended. Actually, also, you should talk with your doctor. Or you might be referred to a nutritionist about meal planning and eating foods that will help your body fight the disease. You may need to prepare food specifically, and that should all be explained to you. Also, there are a lot of books out now that are specialized for eating to prevent and fight cancer. I recommend checking out a lot of those books that really informative and can be very helpful. But understand that they do take some planning, so we try to get somebody to help you with doing the meal planning for that, Don't forget about your emotional well being. Your emotional well being is really important party recovery as well. If you can even find one or two people to talk to about your journey, it can be a lifesaver. Try to make every effort to stay positive. Studies have shown that your mental state of mind is directly linked with the body's immune system, and you want your body to have the best chance possible to fight this disease. Don't give up hope 4. Toxic oils: this is the module. Will we talk about essential oils that are irritating or toxic or photo toxic? I'm going to basically just provide you with a list of all these different things. This is just a short introduction to those lists so that you understand how they work. When it comes to irritating essential oils. The most common ones that people find irritating are enjoy cinnamon burke, 11 um he not make and government. These are the ones that are most commonly experienced is irritating. However, any oil could be entertaining to your skin and especially if you have sensitive skin, treat most of them as though they could be a potential irritant for you. And make sure that you use them highly to livid when you're putting them on to your body. When you cover photo toxic essential oils. There is a definition that you need to know about because there's a question about this on your safety quiz. So I will tell you the definition of follow toxic essential oils. Topical application of one of these oils before sun exposure will increase your sensitivity to the sun and greatly increase your risk of sunburn. So wait 12 hours at least before you go out into the sun after you have applied a whole toxic essential oil to your body. This means basically perfect for massage oil that for night time use you'll notice that the biggest group of offenders on the photo toxic list happened to fall into this Citrus group and most of them lemon. Anything will be for the toxic. For sure. Bergamo was another highly photo toxic, essential oil. The thing was, great fruit you'll see on the list that white grapefruit is photo toxic. However, here's a pro tip. Pink grapefruit is not from a toxic. It is sunset, so enjoy. Or this. Make sure you download them and put them off to put into your workbook. 5. Other medical situations: If you have high blood pressure, it's generally accepted in the aromatherapy community to just avoid using rosemary sage of all types, time and pine. There is some discussion around. All seriousness is but just general consensus. This is what you're gonna find. You might find some that are not on the on this list, or you might find some of these that are honest list that aren't on other lists. Just depends on who you talk to. If you have low blood pressure, you could avoid these. You should have weighed these coils. Having said that, if you have high blood pressure, guess what you can use. You can use lavender and sweet marjoram to help bring your blood pressure down, so that's a good thing to know. So keep a note of these items and refer to them as you need to. If you have glaucoma, then you should be avoiding List E, which is also known as Mei chang, and then the other one's time has up in Cyprus. If you have kidney damage, you want to be a sure to avoid certain essential oils in particular, which agree a nice on juniper berry. You want to make sure that when you're using essential oils, you stay very well hydrated. To avoid doing further damage to your kidneys, we want you to enjoy using while safely.
