About This Class

Learn the modes by experience and you will not forget it anymore.

Through the exercises, you will explore the Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Locrian modes and hence become more comfortable and confident about them.

In the exercises, I invite you to listen and to sing. By listening you will get used to the sounds and intervals, and it will make you feel contextualized/integrated into the atmosphere of each mode. By singing you will sense it and therefore understand it much more deeply than when one just knows the theory.

For every mode, there are three exercises:

1. imitation

2. improvisation

3. dictation

I recorded the same exercises using two different systems: the solfege syllables (tonic sol-fa) and the numbers system. You can choose your favorite.

At the end of this class, you will be able to use the modes in all your music activities (such as improvising, composing, analyzing, transcribing, and more).

This class is very intensive. The process of understanding the modes this way usually takes more than a couple of hours so I advise you to practice it outside the class and repeat the exercises as many times as you need until you feel familiarised with each one of the modes, the same way you feel about the major and the minor scales.

Transcripts

1. Introduction: Hi, everyone. My name is finished and I must specialize. Music teacher. And this is a class where you will finally understand the most. I will talk much about the theory because there are hundreds, maybe thousands, off videos and websites explaining the theory about the boats. But the problem was that the time is that people don't really understand it because they don't experience it. So in this class you'll understand emotes through experience. We will do exercises and you will sing and make music as they go. Is that Gandhi feel much more confident and comfortable about the modes? And you'll be able Teoh les to sing, to compose, to improvise, using different. 2. Just before we start: As I told you, I will not talk much about theory because you will understand everything you need through the exercise will do. But I need to clarify a few things before we get started because some of you might already have rant about the modes on. There are a few things that you need to know before we get stunted. So let's go. There are seven modes Ionia, Doria, Frigia. I believe you makes a lady in a Olean and luxury in. You want to read somewhere that the most come from the major scale, or that the votes are a major skill, starting in different notes. But that's a very common misconception that is not 100% true. And what happens is that usually we already we are already familiar with the major and the minor scales on those are the most importance on and the ones that we used the most. And then when we want to add the modes, we tend to compare it with the knowledge that we already have. But that's Onley away off memorizing. It's that's not the Origen off the most, and sometimes it can lead Teoh. It's up some difficulties in understanding, really understanding that modes. As I told you, there are seven months, but in fact, to off those modes are the major scale ends a minor scale. Ionian is a major skill. Alien is a minor scale. So as you see, the major scale and the minor scale are as important as the other months. So basically, for every key signature there's on Ionian or major scale adoree in a free gin, a lady in a mix lead involves a minor natural scale or a green vote. All of those have the same value. All of them have their own character mystics, their own melodic behaviors, their own internal center, their own, uh, typical harmonies. So I really want you to understand the molds by the molds and not by comparison, Teoh. This kid's in the next videos. You'll learn more about Dorian Free gin Lady in Makes Led in and Lo Fi in because, as I told you, the other two modes are actually the major and the minor scale. So I will let that Teoh another class and we'll just have exercises, and through the exercises, you will learn with serious well 3. 1.1.1 - DORIAN imitation exercise: So let's start by the Dorian. And in this exercise, you have to repeat everything you listen.
