About This Class

English Speaking Patterns Mastery is an English course taught by me, Anthony, a native British English speaker. You will learn English patterns at a deep level, so that you can sound more native-like when you speak English.

English patterns are groups of words (phrases) that native English speakers use again and again. If you learn one pattern, you can make hundreds of sentences. Learning these patterns will also improve your overall grammar and sentence structure.

This course includes:

  • lectures for the target English patterns
  • speaking practice for every single pattern
  • listening practice for every single pattern
  • future updates - this course will continue to grow and grow
  • PDF transcripts
  • and MP3 downloads so that you can learn anywhere, any time.

Each section focuses on one target pattern so that you can master each one and produce it accurately in your spoken English.

If you want to speak English more clearly, if you want to sound more native-like, or if you simply want to take your English to the next level, this course can help you achieve your goal of improving your English.

1. You're one of the... (Learn): The target pattern for this lecture is you're one of the. When using this pattern, we abbreviate the subject and the verb, especially in spoken English. So instead of saying you are one of the we abbreviate you are to your we say you're one of the we also abbreviate other subjects which will go into later. First of all, let's look at the meaning off this pattern. Here is an example. You have a beautiful voice. You're one of the best singers I've ever heard. So what does the pattern? You're one of the mean. We use it to emphasize someone or something is very good. Smart, crazy, etcetera. So we use an adjective, and we're emphasizing the adjective. That's what this pattern is all about emphasizing the adjective. So in the example I just gave, I said, You have a beautiful voice, which means singing voice. You're one of the best singers I've ever heard. So the adjective in this sentence is best. You're one of the best, so we're trying to emphasize the adjective and make it stronger. So when we say one of the best, it means among the best thing is I've heard in my life among the top singers. You are one of them. Okay, you're in the elites, the top group off people. So that's how we use this pattern. So you can change the adjective. You could say, You're one of the best something. You're one of the smartest. You're one of the craziest. You're one of the funniest. We can change the adjective according to the situation. We'll see more of this in the example Sentences. Here is the first example. What a great movie. It's one of the best movies ever here. We've just left the cinema after watching a movie, and I say, Wow, what a great movie. It's one of the best movies ever, So I'm trying to say, among the best movies I've ever watched in this group. That movie we just saw is one of those. It's one of the best. It's one of the elite. Okay, here is another example. So Jim says, Who's Lionel Messi? Edward says he's one of the greatest football players in the world. In this example, Jim didn't know who Lionel Messi Waas, so he's asking his friend, who is he, and Edward replies, He's one of the greatest football players in the world, which means among the greatest in the world among the best. Lionel Messi is one of them, so his top five in the world is one of the greatest football players in the world. Here's one more example for you. How do you know so many things? You're one of the smartest people I've ever met. This person is amazed at the other person's knowledge. He's asking, Wow, how do you know so many things? How is your knowledge so great? And then he says, You're one of the smartest people I've ever met. So in my life, among all the smart people, your one of the smartest you're up there with the elite. That is how we use this pattern. Let's look at the structure now. Here it is. We use he she or it. Plus is which is the apostrophe s. So he she It's one of the plus a superlative adjective plus unknown. For example, he's one of the greatest football players in the world. And when we use you, we use the verb are. So we say you're one of the plus superlative adjective plus known. For example, you're one of the smartest people I've ever met. Just in case you're not sure what a superlative adjective is. It's an adjective which has most before it or e s. T at the end. So, for example, we say most beautiful to say number one or most interesting. Okay. Or some adjectives take E S t at the end, for example, greatest or smartest or nicest. So that's a superlative adjective is the adjective which is trying to say number one. Okay, most now move on to the practice exercises. Download the MP threes. I'll see you in the next lecture. 2. You're one of the... Speaking (Practice 1): speaking practice for you're one of the listen to what I say. Then pause the video on. Repeat after me. Think about the pattern we studied.
