About This Class

In this class I will complete short creative projects while sharing ways that you can embrace and express your creativity. 

When you embrace your creativity you acknowledge the unction to create, and then give space to that desire by exploring those inner nudges. 

This might include trying new art supplies, taking a dance class, walking along a nature path and drawing or painting what you see - this is where expression comes in. You can express your creativity in so many ways. This class explores only a few simple ways that might give you ideas about how to use your art supplies in a different or new way. 

As you explore your art materials and complete one or more of these projects, I invite you to share your explorations in the project section.

1. Embrace+Express Your Creativity Intro: Hi, I'm an net brown and that create art. I'm doing my first and middle names. And Francine, this class is somewhat different from my past classes, and that's I will be working through short projects while sharing tips on how you can embrace and express your creativity. I would transition from very quick projects to you somewhat longer ones, and I invite you to join me along the way. 2. 2 Short Poems: all right, so let's get started with our first short project. All you'll need are your hands from merely pick up a writing utensil. Maybe you can even use an electronic device. There are lots of different options from a journal Teoh. The back of a receipt paper. I have often used my sketchbook. If I'm not drawing, I might write poems inside there as well. If you have a rhyming dictionary on hand, that's cool. But it's not essential. I am going to start here with my journal and again, if you were hurting use and I've had or some other device, that's fine as well. This sheet of paper is off another example of something I would write on just whatever I could get my hands on. It's usually right. My shirt Poland's on, and I thought that we would get started with Ah haiku. You might be familiar with haiku poems. You probably I wrote a few starting in elementary school, and it's a Japanese Fulham where the first and last lines are five syllables each and the middle line ISS seven syllables. So I usually just start out just thinking of a particular theme on this particular day, the sun was shining really bright, which is somewhat unusual for a September in the Chicago area. So this home is about the sun and how the sunshine is making me feel you can see me using my fingers, too. Count the syllables. As I am considering what words I would use for the prom, I would say, Just give yourself a few moments. Try not overthinking haiku poems. Air typically related to nature, but they don't have to be. You can write them about any topic, especially if it's just your free time. And it's something that you're doing to relax, um, and enjoy your own creativity. There have been plenty of times when I have had nothing but a napkin from maybe Starbucks or another restaurant that I had gone to, so I will definitely pull out a napkin and write. Write my poems on that as well. So don't allow, um, having not having the right supplies. The quote unquote right supplies to hinder you from expressing yourself with poetry, especially since it can be really short and sweet right here. I have the five syllables. I'm just counting them out again to verify that I counted the right syllables in the first place. Um, and that's it. You have this three line poem that helps you express your thoughts and feelings from that day, and I'm just thinking of a title. And yes, so it's that the sun just sums it up. And so the next problem is a free verse form, and this could be of any length. So that's why I thought I would included here a swell. In addition to choosing your own length for the porn, you can determine whether or not you want words to rhyme, whether you will use simile or metaphor as forms of comparison on similarly uses like or ass and comparison, medical is usually a little more mysterious form of comparison. Anna, for a is another option where you can repeat a word or words at the beginning of each line or claws, so there are lots of options for you to consider. I try not to get caught up in any technicalities. Just write what you feel you need to express imagery and emotions can come to us at any moment of the day, and so that's why I'd like toe have something on hand to jot down these thoughts so I would encourage you to do the same, even if you have a set time per day, where you create, whether it's writing or painting. I would also suggest having something with you a small journal, a napkin, a notebook, whatever you need just to have something on hand so that you can express yourself at any given moment throughout the day. So if you're short on time, or if you want to give yourself a short creative break from something else you might be doing, consider writing a haiku or a free verse poem and just jot down what you're thinking and feeling. It can help unclog your mind that can help unclog your heart and just keep you. And in a state of rest in peace, I find that writing poetry is a great way for me to de stress and to just sort through some thoughts or emotions I might have. So keep in mind that you can use scrap paper. You can use a receipt paper. Whatever you have on hand, just pull it out and allow yourself to unwind and refocus 3. 3 Mark Making: this section will build on the next one, but in this section we will simply make marks. On paper, you can use almost any writing you tend, so you have on hand. You can try brush pins, calligraphy pens, bullet points, metallic pens, whatever you have. Right now, I'm stippling and creating hatches. Right now, I'm using a Tambo food in a Suki calligraphy pin. It's the heart it. And with this tip, you can create very thin lines like the squiggles you see here or somewhat thicker lines like the hatching. And the goal here is just to practice, creating patterns and marks by hand in order to exercise your hands to get them acclimated to creating different types of shapes. This is just a scallop shaped or here, and this really know right or wrong. Way to create the shapes is just a matter of putting into practice, creating each of the marks. I will include a download below that will give you more ideas about the common marks and patterns that you can create when you're practicing. A word of caution, though, with regards to the mid on this bicycle, a pen on on most brush pounds if you use regular coffee paper that can scratch the nib and decrease the lifecycle of that physical unit. So right now I'm using Super Premium smooth paper by Georgia specific. It's the super premium Bright, a jet and laser paper. It's £28 which is a little heavier than typical copy people, and it's really thick, and you can tell the difference. And I have found that it prolongs the use of my brush pants when I used to use regular coffee paper on my brush, Mons will dry out pretty quickly so it might be worth it. Teoh Use smoother paper. You can also use a roadie, a pad or any other copy paper that is really thick and smooth. Mark Mikan has been proven to improve. Hand and eye coordination offer a nonverbal way to express emotions. It helps to strengthen hand muscles, and it helps to familiarise your hands with making certain marks. So it helps develop muscle memory so that when you're working on more final projects, you'll recognize your hand will recognize how to create these shapes and forms. Because you've done it so many times before, it also helps to strengthen your imagination because you're simply making marks based off whatever comes to mind. In addition to using the this is, ah, metallic regular sides. Bullets hit that I just showed you. But in addition to using these types of mark making tools, you could consider using crayons, markers, oil pastels, graphite pencils and even paint and the paint brush. Just use whatever you have on hand and allow yourself to relax, especially one creating scribbles like this. You can really just let yourself be expressive and allow yourself to just work through some emotions who might be having. I'm just trying to show a close up of those, yeah. 4. 4 Marks & Color: in this segment, we will combine marks that we use in the last segment with color. While I'm using watercolor, you may want to use a different medium, but this is Strathmore watercolor paper. It's sort of sheets £140.300 GSM 5.5 by 8.5 inches. The watercolor that I'm using is the Yasu Telmo Authentic Chinese watercolors and Indigo burnt sienna and vermillion. This is the perfect time. Teoh. Test out new art supplies or combined different sets of art supplies and observe the outcome. You can try new color combinations. Try a new set of papers or canvas, explore different ways that your mark making tools reacts to the new canvas and create textures or smooth gradations is totally out to you. For this project, I used an angled brush to apply water to the watercolor paper, and then I dropped in pigment, which was the vermillion. And for the end ago I simply added that pigment to the paper and then added more water and pigment to create textures. So at this point, I'm comfortable with the outcome, and I'm going to let it dry completely before applying any marks to it. Now. The watercolor pain is completely dry. It is no longer glistening in the lights, so that's a big indication that it's totally dry and you can see a big scribble on it. I used a Prisma color premier marker and Jet Black. I used the brush tip to create the scribble. These are the marks from our last section, and so I'm referencing the scribble from here. But of course it looks a little different. But this is just one way to apply the marks you made to this project. And so now I'm using the circles that we made in the last segment, and I'm just creating a pattern within this one segments of the scribble, and I think that's going to be my plan. The route I It's gonna create different types of patterns within age segment. I've sped up the footage for this section, but the manner in which that I'm applying marks I'm considering the visual weight of each mark in an attempt to balance the full composition so you'll see me adding more space in certain areas. I feel that the line wait for the overall scribble is too thin, so I'm thickening that line. I also discovered that the Prisma color ink turned blue on this paper, and I had never seen that before, so that was another reason to go over the line. And if this were a final peace, I would make the lines a little neater. I would taper the transitions better, but back to the patterns. So here I have alteration between thick and thin lines, the space between the first and last pattern. I just stippled, um, to add some texture there, but not to make overwhelming or two too heavy. Now, had I not done this project, I would not have known that the prison color marker turns a bluish tone, even though it's Jet black. So that's something for me to note. I probably would never use that particular marker again. If I'm creating marks on top of watercolor or on watercolor paper, I would have to test it with different watercolor papers to see if it has the same effect. Also, I was able to test how the different marks looked in relations with one another, So that's another good reason to combine your marks in one composition so that you'll have a better idea of how they will look one still next to each other because it's not going toe look the same every time. So I hope you enjoy this process and I'll see you in the next video. 5. 5 Mini Abstract Intro: In this last segment, I will be creating a small abstract painting and using watercolor pain. But this project can easily translate into an acrylic abstracts or mixed media painting. You can even use markers or whatever you have on hand. Years ago, I enrolled in a studio painting course where we studied American Abstract Expressionist fingers. Sometimes the instructor would read poetry or play music, and we would create paintings in response to the emotions felt in those moments. We use various shapes, colors, brushstrokes and compositions to visually represent those emotions. So if any of that appeals to you, feel free to read a poem or listen to music before and or during this project recently revisited the artist suit of Chicago and I have a lot of emotions, mostly curiosities to work through from that experience. As you may know, prior to the American Abstract Expressionist movement, there was a European one. The American one occurred slightly before, during and after World War Two, but the European one occurred slightly before, during and after World War. One of my favorite painters from the European Abstract Expressionist movement is lastly Kandinsky, so I will looks for marks and washes using watercolor while trying to better understand his approach to painting. Due to the fact that most abstract Expressionists are expressing emotions in their own unique ways, it is a little difficult to explain the process. But from what I understand, one of the main commonalities is layers. If you're working in watercolor, you want to create layers from light to dark In acrylics. You can place lighter marks on top of dark pain once it dries, and the same holds true Pugwash. But with this form of painting, especially, you don't want to over think it. Instead, trust your hands and your heart to guide you through the process of creating an extract expressionist painting. 6. 5b Mini Abstract Painting: to start this painting, I gathered my watercolor supplies, which was a jar of water around brush the same watercolors I used earlier, and I used arches, watercolor paper, and I cut it down to four inches by six inches. So, as you can see here, I'm just using my brush lightly. And I'm also playing pressure in some areas in order to create these shapes. They're just random. A morphosis shapes. I also allow some adjacent colors to bleed into one another. We're going to set this aside and allow it to dry completely. Since I had some water color paint left over and some scrap sheets of watercolor paper left over, I decided Teoh apply color to these sheets as well. And again, I'm just randomly applying the color, allowing the colors to create their own textures and in testing different color combinations, dropping more pigment in some areas and leaving some areas with more water. I left a little gap there, and then I decided to add some water to see how these colors bleed into one another, and I add more water at the bottom to create a softer edge. Now that the first layer is completely dry, I can begin to add marks. On top of this, the first layer you can use a liner brush. That's what I'll primarily use. It's a master's touch. Zero line of rush. I also have a masses touch zero around and a Blick master stroke. This is a synthetic number six a round brush. You may also consider using colored pencils. Make sure they have a sharp point or defined marks. You may want to use a few my crimes. This is a brush pigment micron, and this is a 005 verifying point micron. I also have a fever Castle pit artists spin and has a brush tick and the trusty flute Mississippi Tambo calligraphy pen. And I may not use all of these. I likely won't. But I just like to have them on hand. And this is another brush pan, and I forgot to mention that I also have this charcoal. It's the soft sparkle steak. Okay, so I chose to get started with the liner brush using concentrated watercolor pigment, So I'm not going to use the pigment that's on my palette plate palette. I'm going to simply take pigment directly from this little container. Once I get enough on Al just used the existing shapes to determine what marks to make next . So here I'm just following along the side of this shape, basically outlining it after wedding, my rush a bit more and adding more pigments would I went back in to create these fines, Granik, and I'm just following the flow that already exists on the shapes that are already dry in here. I'm using the side of my brush to create these marks, and at this point, there is not as much water on my brush. So it looks more like a dry brush effect here. I'm tapping the buried with the very tip of the brush to make these marks there just quick strokes. Those top marks were brushed in using the side of the paintbrush, I decided to add 1/3 color to this painting. I tested out this carmine red, and it was a little spider than I expected. So I'm adding in to go to the carmine red to create this foolish, foolish tune in here. Adding more pigment to the edges so that they'll be darker than center is creating more shapes using the same color combinations and just adding more pigment in some areas. Is it just quick strokes? And this is the number six rounds. Good masterstroke. Crash, that music. He's thinking about what to add next. So I picked up the liner brush again in order to make more been minds. - I felt that I needed more balance in this area. So I added another blue line with marks, and I'm also going to add some blue into the purple shape on top. The remaining marks will just add more texture and balance throughout the composition. Here is the finished piece. In case you were wondering how the other watercolors watches came out, this is how they look and now they're ready for future projects. 7.
