About This Class

Elementary English Level I: Part One

This class is for anyone with little or no previous English study.

The course is divided into two parts: language acquisition and language practice

In the acquisition sections, we will learn or review vocabulary words, grammar topics, and verb tenses.

In the practice sections, we will reinforce what we have learned through reading, writing, listening, and speaking exercises.

Elementary English Level I: Part One will include the following topics:

I have spent the past ten years teaching English in South Korea, Thailand, Italy, and France.

1. Introduction: Right. Okay. This would work in practice, right? 2. ONE Reflection Question: Why are you learning English? So maybe you have professional reasons. You work in international business. You travel for business. You visit other countries on business. Or perhaps you work in the tourism industry. You work with people visiting from other countries. Or maybe you work in a call center. Or you have work emails that are written in English. Or you have international colleagues that you need to speak with on the phone or write two over email. You could also have academic reasons. So maybe you are a student. You are taking classes for English, either in school or after school. Maybe you are studying for university or preparing for an English exam. So you could be taking an English placement exam to go to university, the UK or the US, Canada. Maybe you're studying for TOEIC or the TOEFL. You could also have trouble reasons. So maybe you would like to visit an English-speaking country. Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, the US, etcetera. Or visit a country where English is used very commonly. So India, Jamaica, Kenya, the Philippines. Or just to travel more easily in any country. You could also have some other reasons, FUN reasons. If you want to better understand movies and TV series in English. If you want to listen to English language music and podcasts. If you want to watch English language news sources like the BBC or CNN. Or if you want to interact with people on social media in English, a lot of it is in English. So complete your answers on your worksheet. I'll give you some examples. So you could say something like, I am learning English because I want to travel to New York. Or learning English will help me prepare for the TOEIC. Or I am learning English because I want to watch series on Netflix. Or another streaming service that you use. Or learning English will help me get a better job. So what are your reasons? 3. Reflection Question: reflection. Question number one. Why are you learning English? So we will look at some possible responses. So, first professional reasons. Do you work in international business with people in other countries? Or do you take trips for business travel? Or do you work in tourism with tourists who speak English or if you work in a call center, or just writing work emails to colleagues If you have international colleagues to the others? Impossible professional reasons. Ah, there's also academic reasons. If you are a current student, if you take English classes, extra English classes, uh, if you are studying for university to get into a university or if you are studying for an exam, the toe exito full on, there's also travel reasons. So do you want to visit an English speaking country? UK, US, Canada, Ireland, Australia? Do you want to visit a country where English is used? So India, Philippines, Kenya or just more easily travel in any country anywhere in the world? Uh, or there's fun. Other reasons. So if you like to watch movies and TV series in English, you could better understand, uh, if you want to. You listen to English language music and podcasts are watching news sources in English. So if you want to watch the BBC, CNN, other news sources or interact with people on social media in English language, social media, so you should have your worksheet. This is what it looks like. So you're going to write in your answers in full sentences. Take a couple of minutes. Ah, these are some possible examples. So I am learning English because I want to travel to New York. Learning English will help prepare me for the toe IQ. I'm learning English because I want to watch theories on Netflix. We all have Netflix, uh, or learning English will help me get a better job. These are possible answers. 4. Verbs and Phrasal Verbs: to be To be to come should come to do to do, to get, to get, to go, to go, to have to have to know, you know, to learn, to learn, to make, to make just say, to say, to see, to see, talk, to, talk, to tell, to tell, to want to want. Grammar: Subject Pronouns: Subject pronouns. A subject is a person or thing performing an action, which is the verb. Subjects are divided into two groups. So we have the singular, which is one person, or the plural, which is two or more people. And then we have the first person, second person, third person. The first person always includes the speaker, singular or plural. There's always the speaker in the singular. It is only the speaker. In the plural. It's a speaker, at least one other person. So i is the singular first-person. I study English is just me. We could she and I, you and I. And I. And it's always we, we study English would be the sentence. The second person is the easiest. It's always the same. And there's only one form. So there is no singular and plural. Masculine, feminine, no formal. Know, informal. So if I'm talking to Sarah, I would say you did you do your homework? If I'm talking to Sarah and Jack, I'll also use you didn't do your homework. Even though I'm talking to people, it's the same form. The third person has the most differences. So he is the singular masculine. She is the singular feminine. And it is singular. It has no gender. But you would not use it for people. Is plural. And it has no gender. It's used for people. And you can also use it for a singular person, which we will talk about in a couple minutes. So he is a masculine singular person. He is my brother. It's a male person and just one person or he's my uncle. An uncle is also a male person. She is a feminine singular person. So she is my sister. Sister is a female person, or she's my aunt. Same, it's one female person. It is a singular non-gender to sing or animal. You can use it or he or she with an animal. If it's, if it's a pet, if it's your cat or your dog, and you know the gender, you can use he or she if you don't, you can use it. So it is a cat, or it's an English class. An English class is a non gendered thing. So for the plural third person, we use a day. It's two or more gender people or non-gender things or animals. So thay we have Sarah and Amber. These are two female names, so too feminine people. They read in the library. Then we can have Sarah and Jack. So we have one feminine person, one masculine person. They work on their homework. They could be Jack and David. So we have masculine people. These are boys names. They drive to school. They could be two or more gendered people or non-gender things or animals. So they could be the books. So it's a plural noun, no gender. English doesn't give a gender two nouns. Some languages do, English does not. So a book is not masculine or feminine. It's just a book. So here they are on the shelf, meaning the books are on the shelf. Here we have Sarah Jack, and the book's a feminine Parsons, masculine person. Some non-gender things there in the bookshop. So we have two or more masculine people, two or more feminine people, two or more masculine and feminine people, two or more engendered items, but not people. Two or more people, non gendered items, but not people. And we can also use Day as a non gendered substitute for a singular he or she. So we can do this when the gender is not important. So for talking about the student, the customer, the team, the mailman, which could be the male woman. We would just use they the gender. We either don't know or it's not important. We can also use it. If the gender is not known or you're unsure of the gender. If we're talking about a student, how did the student do on their test? All they did well. And we can also use it if the person that we're talking about prefers to he or she. All of those reasons are perfectly fine to use as a, as a singular subject pronoun. 10. Verbs: Present Simple: Regular verbs in the present simple, keep the form of the infinitive in all subject pronouns, except for the third person singular. Third person singular is he, she, and it. These verbs add an S to the infinitive. So here we have to ask in the present simple. I ask you ask he asks she asks. It asks. Then back to we ask you ask. They ask. Next we have to come. I come. Come. She comes. She comes. It comes. We come. Come. They come to learn. I learned. She learned. They learned. Most verbs are irregular in the third person singular. B is the major exception. To B has three forms. To be who you are. He is she is, it is we are UR And they are to do I do. She does. She does. It. Does. Do you do? And they do to go? I go. You go? He goes. She goes. It goes We go. You go. And they go to have I have you have he has. She has. It has. We have. There are also some spelling change firms. So some verbs add an S, not just an S in the third person singular. Verbs, SH, CH, PCH, x, ss. So this is a ZZ verb. She buses. Buses to teach. To teach is a CH suburb. I teach. You teach. He teaches. She teaches. It. Teaches. We teach. You teach. They teach to patch. To patch is a T C, H verb. I catch. You catch. He catches. She catches. It, catches. We catch, catch, catch. Another set of verbs end in y, and we change the y to I0 in the third person singular. So the pronunciation doesn't change. It's just the spelling. So steadies would have an S in the third person, carries and tries to apply. I apply. You apply. P applies. She applies. It applies. We apply. You apply. They apply. So the pronunciation, how you say the verb is not affected, it's the same. So again, with two copy I copy. You copy. He copies. She poppies. It copies. We copy. Copy. Copy. To cry. I cry. You cry. He cries. She cries. Cries. We cry. You cry. And they cry. 11. Writing: Subjects and Predicates: A subject is, or what the sentence is about who or what is doing the action. The subject pronouns can be I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they, you can also use nouns like a proper noun. So you could use Jessica, Stephen, a bus, the weather, August, et cetera. Then there is the predicate. And this is what the subject is doing or what is the action. So this would be the verb. So learn or learning English, have or have green eyes, go or go to school. These would all be the predicate of the sentence. So here are our subject is Jessica. The predicate is have brown eyes. The complete sentence, Jessica has brown eyes. Next we have today. The predicate is be September 25th. And the complete sentence today is September 25th. And we have the predicate is learned English at school. The complete sentence, we learned English at school. Our subject is they. The predicate is work at the hospital. And our complete sentence, they work at the hospital. Next one subject is i. The predicate is though to school by bus. The complete sentence, I go to school by bus. Matcha subject to a predicate to create a logical sentence and then write out each sentence. Makes sure that all verbs are properly conjugated. There are multiple correct answers for each. Number. Number one, Adrian is from Canada, or you could say Adrian has brown hair. Or adrian listens to music. The most important thing is that you conjugate the verb correctly. Number two, you could say he does homework. He does his homework. He listens to music. He knows Spanish. Number three, I have brown hair. I worked in a restaurant. I talked to the teacher. Number four, sarah knows Spanish. Serra talks to the teacher. Sarah learns English. These are all possible answers. Number five, she learns English. She does homework or she does her homework. She works in a restaurant. Number six, they listen to music, or they're from Canada, or they do homework, or they do their homework. Number seven, we talked to the teacher, or we know Spanish, or we have brown hair. Number eight, you could say, you work in a restaurant, you learn English. You are from Canada. 12. Practice Exercises 1-3: Exercise one, right, the correct pronoun for each subject. So number one, Sarah and Jessica. We have two people. So we use number two, she and I. I, that's the speaker. And then we have another person. So it's we. Number three, pencil, not a person. So we use it for a smartphone, same as a pencil. It's an object, so we use it. And number five, the cats and I, we have the Speaker and other subjects, so we will use we number six, calendar is also not a person, so we use it. Number seven, bicycles. That's also not a person, but there is more than one. So we use the number eight, table and chairs, same as bicycles. We use the number nine. My brother is a male person, so we use he. And number ten, grandma is a female person. So we use x0 exercise to write the pronoun which corresponds correctly to the subject in parentheses. Number one, Sarah, we use x0. X0 is from New York City. Number to Jessica and I. We have the speaker and another person. We we're swimming at the beach. The cat. It is sleeping. So this one, if it's your cat or a cat that you know, and you know that it is a boy or a girl, then you can use he or she. But if it's just a cat that you see and you don't know if it's a boy or a girl. You can just use it. Number four, the flowers in the garden. So this would be they, they are pink. Number five, my parents, they are watching TV. Number six, Amanda. Have you got anything to read, Amanda? So here we use you and not x0 because we are talking to Amanda, were asking her a question. We are not talking about Amanda. Number seven, David is a boy's name, so it's he. He has two brothers and a sister. Number eight, The students, they have to study. The students. That's a plural noun. Number nine, tomorrow, it is Christmas. Tomorrow is not a person. So we use it. Number ten, Maya and Bella. These are two people. So we use day. They're bored, so they're going to the beach. Exercise. Three. Rewrite each sentence using the correct corresponding subject pronoun. The painting is not a person, so it, it, it is very beautiful. Number to Queen Elizabeth is a woman. So we would say xi, xi is a famous monarch. The Pacific Ocean is also not a person. So it, it is very big. Kevin James, this is two people. So they they are best friends. Charlotte is a female name, so we use she she speaks French and English. Number six, the music. This is not a person, so we use it. It is too loud. Number seven, Justin and I, so we have the speaker and another person. We we are siblings. Cristiano is a boy's name, so he he plays soccer. Number nine, Jamie and John. These are two people. So how are they? And the weather? The weather is into person, so we use it. It is very cold this winter. 13. Practice Exercises 4-6: Exercise four circled a pronoun which corresponds correctly to the subject of the sentence. Number one is Serena likes tennis. Serena is a xi. Two, Maria and solely dad are friends. Maria and solid on two people. So that is number three. Jacob hates sushi. Jacob is a male name, so we use the dogs are playing in the park. The dogs are not people, but we still use the number five. The sky is blue. The sky is not a person and it's singular. So we use it. Number six to flight is taking off from the airport. The flight is it? Number seven? Stephanie likes pizza. Stephanie is a girl's name, so we use a sheet. Number eight. The men are cooking in the kitchen. The men is the plural of man. So it's more than one person. Marian Francoise are from Paris, user to people. So we use a number ten, the toys are in the children's room. The toys is the subject. So we will use a plural noun. Exercise five. Choose the correct subject pronoun to complete the sentence. Number one, we are playing football. Number two, what time is it? Number three, you live in Los Angeles? I have three sisters and two brothers. It is a beautiful day. Number six, do you speak English? Number seven, I am listening to the radio. Number eight, we are driving to Disneyland. Number nine, Do you want to go to the cinema tonight? They are reading in the library. Exercise six. Match each verb to the correct sentence. Number one, I eat breakfast at eight o'clock each morning. Number two, he reads his emails when he gets to work. Number three, they spend the weekend at their grandparents house. We live in an apartment in New York City. You drink coffee with breakfast? Number six, she writes postcards on vacation. Number seven, I walk to work every day. Number eight to he talks to the doctor. Number nine, they worked together at the bank. And number ten, I play tennis every weekend. 14. ONE Practice Exercises 7 9: Exercise. Match the verb to the correct sentence. Number one, the bank opens at 930 in the morning. I wake up at 730. Number three, finishes his homework at seven o'clock in the evening. Sits in the tree. You take the bus to the airport. Number six, this stores in Times Square and never close. Number seven, they arrived late to the cinema. Number eight, she runs in the evenings before dinner. Number nine, the baby sleeps through the night. Number ten, the marathons starts at ten o'clock in the morning. Rewrite each sentence with the given subject pronoun. Number one, we go to school by bus. You play baseball in the park. Number three, she always finishes her homework. So you also need to change her. Number four, I always clean the house. Number five, he watches movies at the cinema every weekend. So here you also need to change the verb conjugation for watch two watches. Number six, he wakes up early. Number seven, you have dinner at eight o'clock in the evening. Number eight, I visit a new city every summer. Number nine, you wash your car on Saturday. So here you need to change three words, the subject pronoun and the verb, wash, and the possessive. Number ten, they make breakfast for the family. So here you also need to change the form of the verb. Exercise nine, right? The correct form of the verb to match each subject pronoun. Number one, we make. Two, I talk. Since these answers are just going to be examples, yours should be different. Number one, I live in Los Angeles. Number two, I work at UCLA, or I work in a coffee shop, or I study at USC. Number three, I eat yogurt and berries for breakfast. I eat a sandwich for lunch. Number five, I get to work by car or walk to work. Number six, I like to wear jeans and a t-shirt. Number seven, I like red and blue. Number eight, my hobbies are reading, playing piano and volleyball. I worked 30 hours each week or I worked 20 hours per week. You can use each or per. Number ten, I watch Breaking Bad and supernatural on TV. So these are just examples yours should be different. Exercise 12. Right? The correct form to have in each blank. Number one, I have a new bicycle. Number two, you have a brown eyes. Number three, they have a new car. Number four, she has a new bag. He has a sharp. Number six. Number seven, she has a good sense of humor. Number eight, I have too many books. Number nine, it has too much sugar. And number ten, they have a beautiful house. 16. Practice Exercises 13-15: Exercise 13. Match the verb to the correct sentence. Number one, I play the piano to eat ice cream after dinner. He likes Mexican food. Number four, she goes home at the weekend to visit her parents. If you're using here, then you would say to visit his parents. And number five, she talks to her friends on the phone. I will say each sentence two times and fill in the blanks for the missing words. Number one, she has black hair and brown eyes. She has black hair and brown eyes. Her favorite season is autumn or fall. Or you could say autumn is her favorite season or fall is her favorite season. Number five, which languages does she speak? Sophia speaks English, Spanish, and French. Number six, what is so F0 is job is a copywriter or Sofia works as a copywriter. Number seven, what does Sophia every weekday? Sophia goes to work every day. Number eight, what does Sophia take to work? So he takes the bus and subway to work. Number nine, what does she want to be? She wants to be a journalist. Number ten, what university degree to Sophia have? So fear has a degree in English. 19. Review: Question one. What is your name? You can say My name is or my name's.
