About This Class

You will be introduced to fashion illustration in its purest form. Developing your visual vocabulary. This course uses a variety of approaches to consider when illustrating fashion. Different ways of drawing and seeing the figure will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on injecting movement and expression into the figure and on communicating the essential elements of clothing. This course should improve your confidence and ability in fashion illustration. Some classes will focus on collage and I will be teaching you to experiment with a variety of media. You’ll investigate different concepts through drawing.  This course focuses on drawing & collage. Drawing and image making are central to the study of fashion illustration and are explored through the use of sketchbooks, drawing and the relationships between ideas.  This Fashion Illustration course reflects recent trends in the creative industries.

1. Fashion trailer: Are you ready for experimental fashion during calls? It was my dream to go to fashion university and learn to Jura professional standard, and that's what I did. I went to Fashion University and I learned how to become a fashion artist and had to design and make my own clothes from scratch. But I believe that you do not need to go to university to learn the skills necessary to become a fashion illustrator. I believe that fashion university is good, but to develop yourself as a capable illustrator, you need to experiment on the only path to success. It's through experimentation and using non traditional methods to create your drawings. That determination, a love of drawing and continuation off practice, will get you there in the end. Indeed, the purpose off this course is to encourage you to develop your fashion drawing skills. This is an entry level guide to fashion illustration, and you will explore methods that you have never used before and really have fun. And you're not going to be afraid to use your pencil. I really want you to destroy your sketchbook on. By that, I mean, don't be afraid to make a mark on your sketchbook. The most experimental and fund designs are the best, although the purpose off this course is for you to have fun discovering the possibilities off fashion illustration, It may also awaken talents that could lead to something more. Whatever the future holds, I hope that this course will inspire you to pick up a pencil and create something wild and amazing. So what you waiting for? Why don't you join me and learn how to draw most best fashion drawings and modern experimentation? 2. Feel it: our kit, so there's a huge range of materials you need. You'll need some pencils. You'll also need some past doubts that you can do some nice marks. Also a fine liner and some watercolor paints, as well as, um, nice Marcus off different colors. Also some oil pastels or some crayons and acrylic paint as well, as well as a really nice fix sketchbook with really good pages in it. So let's get started on our first exercise. Now, in this first exercise, I just want you to have fun with using your pencil scribbling out, get you out. Just do any round of line circles. This is just really to get your hand used to make in the movement they needs to make. I'm making some cylinders and getting used to making circular more fluid movements on when your hands to be very fluid. Very flexible, very loose, not too tight. I don't need to be holding your pencil too tight. I want you to be very loose with how you move your hands and how you move your pencil. So this is all about just playing with your pencil and your pen and just really feeling it out and really playing with your movements of your hand to make your hand create some really beautiful lines, and we're just going to focus on creating lines right now. Fashion artists use a wide variety of materials. Some choose to work with water colors. Some prefer oils or acrylics, while others prefer to use inks, pencils or pass sells. I'm gonna be using all the mediums in this course so you can get to try out and really feel the different mediums and understand how they work. 3. The Basics Of Drawing The Fashion Figure : the job off a fashion illustrator is to make the garments look riel on, also to make them look exciting and expressive. Almost all off. Fashion illustration contains a little bit of human like figures. Whether it's normal or distorted, they all have to be drawn with conviction, and you need to be familiar with a little bit off basic and that to me, a study of the human skeleton is essential. But it's not necessary to know the names of every single bone. Nor do you have to draw the full skeleton every single time you sketch a figure. By studying the structure, you can simplify and break it down into some basic shapes. The key is to get the proportions correct. They made shown shows a human skeleton, and the image shows how it can be broken down into a more manageable frame, which can be used as a basis is a figure. At this stage, the limbs can be represented by simple stick lines, and the rib cage can be ovals, booze or triangle shapes. Once you're familiar with the skeleton, try drawing some rough sketches off stick figures, and you can draw someone walking or the movement off the hand. Right now, I am drawing a stick figure using a triangle method, which is really easy because we're using ovals on triangles just to draw a straight shape. This technique takes you a step further by using the simple blocks to represent the body and the shape and its proportions while clearly creating balance and movement in your figure. Whether your fashion during takes the character off, Ah, fun girl or it's being walked. This technique helps to give you a basic understanding off the figure and how you can progressively develop this outline and make it your own. The typical female fashion figure is illustrated young and slender, and the longer it legs with square shoulders and a big head. Now, this is what we are basing our illustrations on, but we can change that and make it you dick later on. As you can see, I'm using different circles and cylinders for the joints and to represent the arms on the legs. It's very important to just draw some lines very rough line. Now, moving on to the next figure on this figure, we're going to be drawing along with me so follow along with me. I'm starting off with the head. Just do really rough oval shape, then just two lines for the neck. And then we're gonna do a circle and a line for the chest. From here, we're gonna be during enough a circle. We're using a lot of circles because the body is not to square or sharp. So this really helps to give you some form. And it helps to give your figure a little bit off a nice shape when you're creating the body. So circle for the upper half on the torso as well as the hips. You just want to join it together and make it look a little bit like a peanut shape is what I like to refer to it as and drawing circles around the hip bones and during very nice fluid lines for the FIEs bringing that down. And don't worry too much about making it me. This is just meant to be a very quick drawing. This is not sped up in any way. This is actually how fast I'm drawing, so you should be drawing as fast as me. Now we're starting on the next illustration. So we're just doing some simple. We're just doing some simple body skeleton horns and getting re used to how to draw that really quickly. Just do it really, really fast. Don't spend too long doing this. Don't think about it too long. I want you to have fun. Just draw a line and move very fast with the pencil and just really get your hands used to doing this. You might have to do this a few times, Maybe spent two free four hours or even do. This is a warm up before you do any fashion illustration, and I want you to always come back to this video before you start your fashion illustration exercises and just used this as a warm up in this meant to be just very quick. One minute, 32nd joins. It shouldn't take you any longer to do these little stick figure drawing, so just make sure you just create the ovals on the circles connecting all the joints and hips together. The feet should be simply two squares on day should be also joined together. We've so ovals for the ankle joints and ovals for the need joints as well. Wherever we have joints were just gonna be drawing some ovals to indicate that that is a joint for the hands. You can just draw a little square shape and just draw a circle for the wrist Joint indication. Right now, we're not going to get into too much detail. We're just drawing and making sure that we have an idea of where we want everything to be. Once you've created your stick figure, you can actually start thinking about how you can flesh it out. And you can do this by making cylinders. This is where the first exercise came in handy with practicing our cylinders. Andi, think of all of our limbs made up of cylinders because we're not flat. So we want our bodies to look free d when we create them. So create different cylinders to represent the free dizziness off our limbs. Remember that the waste is slightly smaller and the hips are a little bit wider, so we go in at the waist and then go out at the hips. Remember to do a little bit for the breast, few circles and soon this with arms as well to indicate where they are meant to be. Here you can see me just during a rough circle and making the ceiling different. Once you've created your own fashion model, you can use this as a template for your future drawing, so you don't have to re sketch it each time. Use strong lines and be confident when you're sketching of your pencil. Don't be afraid to use a mock because you can always erase it. At this point, we're moving on to drawing the face. This can be very daunting prospect for a beginner, but It's very easy to ruin your artwork, but fortunately, there are lots of easy solutions to this problem, as demonstrated in this video. So using the guidelines, you just rest the eyes on the guidelines and draw the hair in. It was very easy, so you can use your fine liner or, if you're not confident with using a fine line a straight away, you can pencil it in and then go over the fine liner on top. For the nose draw two tiny, understated, curved shapes, either side off the center front line above the mouth and for the mouth. You should draw an M shape, and for the lower lip, you should draw four curve line and you get the perfect face with this. Now this is for a very simple face, but then we can get into more detail faces later on. But this is the simplest face you can news for any fashion illustration that you do now. I'm demonstrating how you would flesh out your basic sketch, and this is how you would draw out with your template. Using a fine line are you trace over your It's over body and you work from top to bottom and just redraw around the body and just follow the guide off the skeleton. When fleshed out, you have a basic fashion figure that you can use as a template for your future fashion drawings. You can just retrace it and use it for your future fashion illustrations. The aim of the fashion administration is, too create an impression off reality not to illustrate all of the details that a professional camera would capture. It's not necessary for the details of the drawing. A fashion illustrations supposed to be very expressive and very beautiful. Clean and simple lines are very important, so this is very important when you translate this into your fleshing out of the body, draw all the body parts to familiarize yourself with the components off the figure as this will help you create your body template. 4. basics of drawing the Face: So now we're going to learn how to draw the face off, started off by doing a four by four grid, and then I'm just doing a simple oval shape within the grid. Do you want them to be equal squares of your grids? You can get a symmetrical face, and then I'm narrowing down the point off the chin and the cheek buns and then erasing the circle part. I just used the original oval just to give me a died, and then you just want to narrow it because the face is a little bit more narrow around the now on the main center line, you can stop drawing in the eye. You want to make sure that it's smaller in towards the inner corners, and you want to make a little circle in the center of the eye for the iris, destroyed the eyes and correct them as you go along. It's good to just check the eyes and erase them and fix them as you go along, because you want them to be good before you start to, you're until put them later on. The no starts a little bit in words from the I and it's just below the eye, so this is where you will. It's not during the nostrils. Then you want to start drawing in the eyebrows a little bit higher than the eyes and then make sure that it's tapered in. Give the eyebrows a bit of a nice shape, but that's not giving them in yet. Now we control the mouth. The mouth is cough. Flee in between the eyes like you can see here, it's up to you. How pal t old, how small we want it to be. But I decided to give her very full lips. Draw the neck in halfway in between the shoreline. Now you can stop drawing the headline. The hat looks amazing when it frames the face. So try and do something that brains the face and complements your model's face. The years should be in line with the eyes. It should not be too low or too high. Otherwise, it could look very wrong. Once you have fixed the shape of the face and you're ready to do your line now, you can use your fine liner to go over the shape of the different features of the face. This is important because later on, we're gonna erase all of the guidelines. So you need to make sure that you have a very careful once you're outlining with your fine line a pen. Well, the eyebrows. You want to use your fine line a pen and use very short, quick mix to frame the eyebrows. You wanted to look as if it's got hair growing from the eyebrows to the short flicks makes it look very realistic for the ear. Make sure you can look at your own air or a picture here so you can have an idea of how the inside of the ear looks so that you can make a accurate coffee or tea. Once you've been, it's during the outline. You have to erase a love the guard lines. Now we're gonna color her first. I'm using some oil pastels. Do you create the highlights in the dimension and immediate care as well? Using watercolors have really liked useful pastels or crayons because it inflates a water resist. It leaves a wax on the paper, so that means that the war to color resist that area, so it shows through some highlights. It's really great to meet you medium separate. A really beautiful effect. When you play on top of the old pastels with watercolor, you can really see the highlights of the hair and keeps the head dimension. What? How I move my brush. I'm using little flicks too great the appearance of a man. It can give the illusion of hair, and I'm making little small flicks around the outlines as well. We're going out on the outside because I want to create some baby hair as well on some flyway here. I wanted to make it look real and make it look a little bit really stick. You can fight this out on your own painting as well. It's very good to mixed mediums and really trying different techniques. I like to mix porter color and all passed down because it really gives it that freedom. It you look, makes the hair look very beautiful and real for the eyes. You need to make sure that you leave a little bit of white space. This gives it that glistening. I look. If you look at all of her irises, you'll see that they look a little bit Blasi and shiny, and this kind of keeps to this effect. Once you have the whites in the eye for the mouth, I decided to go with a pencil. I like to drill her. Nick's in a red color, but I wanted to use some pencil. It's great to make your mediums because it gives you different looks and can make your drawing more exciting for the eyelashes. I decided to draw them. We speak, so you have to make sure that you do then crisscross on a real life eyelash. They're not just straight up and down. If you look around eyelashes there, Chris calls. So make sure that you do different cliques in different directions randomly to make the eyelashes look real. And then now I'm just doing some general shading on the face to make it look a little bit more for you. At this point, it's really great to look in the mirror and check your own face or look a picture so that you can identify the areas where there a shading, whether it's not shade all of the areas like the Cupids bug on around the mouth. Um, underneath the chin are the areas that make you look three d these areas. This is where we're gonna be adding some shading for a more realistic look 5. Figure drawing: the next stage is to develop the skeletal frame into a fully formed figure. One of the weaknesses I've noticed in the early stages of many people's work is the inability to gauge the proportions of anatomy correctly. Sometimes the head is too big or too small in proportion to the rest of the body. Or perhaps the legs are too short or too long. There's lots of different ways that we can combat this, but the best way is to practice during the body. Skeletal figure in action drawing, moving more fluid defense. And this is what I want you to learn in experimental fashion drawing is that the body doesn't have to be during the boring standing up figure. You want your fashion illustrations to stand out and be a bit different from the rest, so you need to be able to draw your fashion illustrations, moving dynamically and moving with their body. The figure is moving and you can really see the expressive action off the body. So right here I am during the model, just about to run off the arms of flung back. The head is back. The chest is for the LEX. Afford the knee is bending up and the body is getting ready to run. And I want you to draw a really quick sketch off a moving bigger the figuring action so that you can see how the body would look whilst it's about to run. Here. I'm using very fluid lines, and I'm no using too many sketchy lines. What I want you to get out off doing is using too much of a sketchy line. I want you to be very confident with your line and just move it very swiftly and draw very confidently with your lines. When you make a mistake, you can always erase it, so don't feel afraid to make mistakes. Just be very bold with how you draw and really get that line quality in the drawing. And just in this you're just meant to be able to find out how you want your post to be getting used to different types of poses and different types of ways that you can draw the body with practice. You will probably find you develop an understanding of how the body works in a balloon, you to sketch without a figure and with minimal use of construction shapes. This exercise is a good way to build up your confidence in fashion drawing. Start by drawing the skeleton fake frame, using the techniques that we outlined in the previous lessons. I'm just drawing a straight up and down body. Andi is very important to get the stance right before moving on to the next stage. If the pose is not correct and it's not balanced all off, the clothing on top will not look right. So it's very important that we create a body that looks good. Now. I am just drawing an oval shape for the chest like we did previously, and also another oval shape for the hips. Really, Take your time here to really try and get the shape of the hips correct on the oval shape. From here, I'm just drawing a nice, strong line down to create the leg. Just create fluid lines of a swift draw off the pencil. You don't want to be too sketchy with this. Just create some fluid lines. Very, very fluid because this makes your fashion drawing look like it's moving. You could see I'm drawing the arms, positioning them in the way that I would like them to be. Once the skeleton figure has been drawn, we have the correct pose. Now we can flesh out the out of shape of the body and check that the poses correct, as it's easier to start over at the stage. If you find it's unbalanced, you can erase lines. You can fix it and make sure that you know it's the figure and how the way is on her leg. If a let if she's resting in the right leg, then the weight needs to look correct. And it doesn't look on ballots, so there needs to be a slight tilt to her hip him. You could see me just fleshing out the arms and the legs and really fleshing out the fires . Once the post has been established and you are happy with the balance of it, the rest of the body can be fleshed out. The breast on the rib cage area, for now, can be slightly oval when during the face, we can keep the feature simple, but try not to over detail or overwork it with too many lines. Now we're going to go into a little bit more detail off with the face in the next clip. But for now, we're going to look at how we can outline the body and give it some really nice strong lines for where we are very confident in how we want it to look. Now we can use a fine liner to create the fine details in the face. Notice how I'm delicately lining around the oval shape to make sure that is the correct shape. Before moving on, I'm putting a little bit of guidelines here so that I can see where I want the eyes to be. Notice that I am just using a little bit off line to represent the eyes. Small circle for the eyes and a few eyelashes and not forgetting the eyebrows from keeping that in the top quarter of the face. And they're fairly spaced out between each other, not to close close together and not too far apart for the nose. Just very, very slight indentation just to represent the nose, but not too thick, and the mouth is always an M, and then fuller curve for the bottom lip. I'm now drawing the neck down and joining it onto the shoulders. Make sure it's your careful to make sure that this is a very nice smooth line, draw their heirs in and just make a really nice curved shape. For the years, the air's need to be slightly below the eyes, but in level and in line with the eyes so that the proportion looks correct. And now we can start drawing in the hair. You can add details such as the hair and keep the ship's really simple when drawing the hair, go for curves that are aesthetically pleasing and try not to make things unnecessarily complicated. So I'm just making curved lines and drawing a part, Line says She has a side part, and I think this looks really nice because it gives her a little bit off personality and some attitude as well. The hair and the eyes can give your character a different kind of attitude or a different type of look. So really pay attention to what kind of look or mood you're portraying of their hair and eyes, because the face can change everything. Now I'm moving onto during the outline off the rest off the body, just following the rough guidelines off the pencil with the fine liner. I'm outlining the rib cage, the waist hips all the way down to defies as well as the hands and just delicately lining on. Also correcting as I line, making sure that I make corrections accordingly. Now your fashion bigger is ready to be traced and used to draw the clothing on top. You can use this as a base, but any fashion drawer and you want. 6. Collage illustration: So now we're going to start with creating our own pattern. This is going to be four Arca Lodge. I've started by using some oil pastels, and I'm just drawing some lines. This is completely up to you about your creative freedom so you can create whatever pattern you feel you would like to create. I decided to do this pattern because I thought that it would look very, very vibrant for the look that I wanted to create. Make it. It's fun and as beautiful as you want, uses many colors as you like or uses little colors as you like. Maybe you want a black and white fashion illustration, so you might use just black and white line is up to you. You can make it how you want. I'm using a little bit off past our colors as well, so I'm using some pastel chalks Ondas. Well, Azad, I am also using some markers. Just be really creative with their and just make a mark. Don't be afraid to make a mark on. That's what I want you to really understand is that you should really create something really beautiful. And don't be afraid to express yourself and have fun there. Now we're gonna move on to drawing our fashion vigor. We're going to use the techniques that we've demonstrated throughout this course, the oval and the line technique. Just create your stick figure skeleton, and we are going to create a fashion thicker and add cloves to the model. Since you can see, I'm just using the stick method, adding to joints, drawing in the limbs and just being very fluid with the movements whilst I'm drawing, make sure to edit it as you go along on to make sure that the proportions are all correct before you start moving onto the next step. Now we're gonna just going to outline with fine liner off the head. Now, we're gonna take some tracing paper. This is where the fun part starts. You need to overlay your tracing paper and you draw your outfit that you want your model to be wearing. It could be anything simple. Just use simple shapes. I am drawing a batwing sleeve top so you can see I'm using a wider sleeve slip. It cropped, but it's up to you whatever design you like to do or illustrate, Then I'm moving on to the skirt. Make sure to draw around the hands, your around the different parts of the limb. Store around the shirt, and then you have a template that you can come out. We're going to start cutting out these templates and make sure you cut as close to the line as possible. We're going to do something really, really fun and exciting with these cut outs, so it means that we need to make sure that they're perfectly cut out. Now you want to put that traced item on your pattern, and you want to cut around it around the shape so that you have the shape of your government on your pattern. And you should end up with a pattern top or skirt or dress. Or what if you decided to do Once you have the car pieces, start arranging them on your model off. How you would like them to look just carefully arranged him. This is a really great technique so that you can create nice patterns and lines on your cloves designs, and it makes it look exciting and fun. Now that you've decided where you want everything to be, it's time to just stick it down with a little bit of prick stick glue, and then you just place it over the manikins body. You don't even need to outline them yet because those parts were even be showing, so you can just paste on top of that. Once you flew different thing place. Now you can start doing your outline. I'm drawing the belly and the belly button. I'm also during the hands where the hands are on the heap, so her hands to the side, and you can see that she's just holding a hip, gently done during that in with the fine liner. Afterwards, we're gonna erase the pencil line once we finished drawing it. So just erase all of the pencil lines because we already have, Ah, fine line lines there. And then you can color in the skin color if you feel like you would want to, or you can leave it blank. It depends on how you want your fashion illustration to look. Now we're going to use the free pencil method. I'm using one fine line A and two pencils. This is a really nice method to create a really exciting and experimental line. I'm using them together to create the hair is really good because it lets you go on. You don't have control over how the line is. It's really free, and you never know what kind of results you'll end up with. Now I'm going to be using the continuous line method for the face. So for the eyes, we are not going to move the pen off the paper. When you're doing this method, the pen has to stay on the paper at all times. That is the challenge, and this allows you to create something a bit free on a little bit more abstract and funky looking rather than the perfect face. And it's really good for you to experiment with this and create something beautiful. 7. Fashion illustration: So now we are working on creating a fashion thicker, and I'm using the triangle and herbal method to create the body. As you can see, it's the same techniques that we've learned in our previous lessons on just creating the legs under to create a fashion line up, which means that I'm going to have a line of girls and they're gonna be wearing different outfits were going to be used in the college method again. But only this time we're gonna be a little bit different with the way that we call our Jit . I'm going to help them overlapping as thes girls. We're gonna be standing together, and from these fashion poses, you can really see how I'm creating the skeletons and having them facing in different angles. This is a great opportunity for you to practice, creating your fashion skeletons poses and making them stand in different ways and making them do different poses, changing the arm position, and then them really interactive each other rather than them just being just standing there . Strangers, what normally happens just do different types of poses. I'm having one that starting toe walk, some trying to draw the legs in that way and just really create really fluid line. And when you create food line, that's the way that you can create movement. So as we did in our previous lesson, I am creating the outfits on the tracing paper. Onda. By doing this, I can cut out the trace and transfer that traced image to the pattern that we created earlier. This could be used for any pattern that wall or a color block like amusing in the video. As you can see here, I'm just sticking it down. Andi, I am just arranging it in the way that I think would suit the illustration best. Now we're gonna move on to doing the fine liner and adding the fine details to the illustration. Yeah, I'm also using the illustration technique that we use before off continuous line. I really think this makes your illustration very fluid, and it forces you to not move your pencil from all pen from the page, and it makes you create something really interesting. As you can see, I'm just creating the buttons, the pleats in the skirt, and I'm just moving the pen and I'm just making sure that I do not lift the pen from the page. This really helps you to create and be really creative with the lines that you make, and it makes you be more loose in how you create your lines, not being to precious with the lines that you create. And it creates something very interesting when you're not too precious with how your lines look. And that's what I really love about continuous line. It really helps you to get out off perfection and make something that looks really interesting and an art piece so continuing on to the next figures, I'm tracing a new dress design onto the second vigor on. She's quite a slender, so I'm just making it fitted to her body and going through exactly the same techniques of coming out and sticking it on. And as you can see, the pattern that we created earlier really adds texture and movement to the design. With this one, I'm using two pencils off continuous line movement, so it really gives you less control over what you're doing. This can be very nice and very experimental. It kind of gets you out of your comfort zone when you're using two pens because you're not really used to doing that and actually gives you really cool abstract effect moving on to the next figure. Just doing another outfit and just repeat this process until you can create something that's really beautiful. As you conceive. The top have used a photograph for the core lodge, and it came from a magazine, so you can also use magazine images as well as your own drawing as well. And you can mix it up and make it nice for this drawing. I decided to be very precise of it. I didn't Leiby continuous line drawing just because I wanted to vary and show you the different options that you can create, using a simple technique by just using the pen to create very fun hair and just be very experimental of it. So it doesn't have to be continuous line drawing, but it can also be something that is very fun and very exciting adds dimension to your drawing when you add different details and it kind of sets it apart from all the other illustrations is about creating your distinct style that when someone sees your work, they can recognize and they know all that's that's Shantel style, or they know that that's your style. And they know that that's the way that you design your illustrations. This is about playing and finding your contemporary way off illustrating fashion, and in this next model, I am being very precise of the line. At the same time, I'm not being too careful making it look purposely beautiful by adding the lines inside off the cutout instead of on the outside, and that makes it look a little bit more detailed. But it also shows days to cut out, and then you just erase all off lines, all of the pencil illustration lines. You erase that and then you have your finished piece.
