About This Class

Understand the strategies used by ESL teachers in the classroom to maintain disciplined, controlled, and yet fun and rewarding classes!

Part one focuses on an overview of 'Classroom Management' and what factors teachers need to consider when setting up a new classroom, including, Respect, Consistency and Seating Arrangements. In the lecture, you will see examples of my own classes and I'll help you understand why 'Classroom management' is so important.

Part two focuses on positive reinforcement techniques and gives you a solid picture of the types of rules to use in your classroom. Moreover, this lecture is designed to help you think about your own classroom and the types of methods that you will employ in your own personal setting as a teacher by giving you a set of examples and suggestions as a starting point.

Part three will provide an overview of what we discussed in the first two lectures and more importantly will give teachers a detailed description of how we can maintain a high standard of classroom management. Here we will also look at the techniques for moderate and more serious cases of discipline that may be needed while teaching and will provide a detailed analysis of when we should use them.

1. Classroom management PART ONE: Hey, guys. Welcome to second for SL teaching classroom management. Hope you enjoy 1234567 Okay. Classroom management is the different methods and strategies used by the teacher to maintain a classroom environment that is conducive to student success on learning. Classroom management is a key component to being a successful teacher. Andi has everything to do with your attitude in the classroom on how you deal with your students In general, every new teacher struggles with costume management in the beginning because they don't focus enough on establishing their rule as boss in the classroom. Remember, you are the director. Here are some guidelines to think about while setting up your new classroom First respect Students must understand that there are certain rules that they must follow to ensure their success on the classrooms. Success for teachers new to a class setting guidelines for the classroom will help develop the respect that is needed so students conduce their best. Most importantly, if you don't take control of your classroom, your students most certainly will consistency. Having a set of consistent procedures and routines that the students are familiar with will help the classroom run like a well oiled machine. You can see this in the previous videos. I give my kids a command. They know exactly what's going to happen. This is through consistent use off the whole brain sentences that we talked about previously. Proximity instructors manage what is going on in the classroom. You can walk around the room, stand next to students who might be causing problems, and this will usually eliminate the problem. Even just placing a hand on the shoulder can quite quickly quiet a student, though alternatively, you can change their seats or get them to sit next to the teacher are even sit next to a quieter student. These air usually quite quick. Fix ease seating arrangement. The instructor needs to think about the order off the room and how it will affect the students. Can they see the board? Can they see you? Are they comfortable or are the uncomfortable? Maybe they're comfortable at the front and not the back. Maybe they're uncomfortable at the front on would prepare to be at the back. You'll get to know your students better understand what they like and also know where you like them to be. The seating arrangement needs to be organized in a way that the instructor can easily move around the room on monitor student behavior. This is all trial and error. Finding out what works with students and allowing the class to develop into a safe and secure environment takes time. 2. Classroom management PART TWO: Hi, guys. Welcome to part two of this section. Classroom management, This kind regret talk about rules on why we used, um as always, I hope you enjoy. So, are you new to rules? Will. Here are some examples that you can use these air. Typical classroom rules in the English Caution. No shouting, No eating. Be respectful. Be nice. Put your hand up. No fighting, no talking, no running, no arguing. Bring our pencil to class. Bring your book two class. Be kind to others. Now, you do not want to use as many rules as this. Three or four of these rules in your class is absolutely fine. You want to be consistent on practice them at the beginning of class each time cost stocks , especially for newer classes. This will get them into the routine on get them understanding exactly what they mean. We also should understand why we use rules. Are your students bored? Is your class fun? Is it entertaining? If a student is board, they're more likely to break some of these rules. Are your lessons each appropriate and level appropriate is the material you're doing too hard for them? Or maybe it's too easy on their board of it. Do they have behavioral issues now? We will discuss this later on, but is something to consider? Some students have conditions that are undiagnosed, and you might need to be aware off this. Dear students understand what's happening in your class. So have you laid out clearly for them to know what is going on and what is expected off the Do your students think that you care about their This is important. Your student wants to feel like they're part of your class. They want tohave the attention off the teacher. If the teacher is ignoring them, they're more likely to act up. Do they care about learning? This is actually a very big one, because certain ages, especially in Asia, students will get to a certain level where the either give up or do not care as much as they once did. They will have extra homework from their from their main school, and they will just generally feel more tired and less motivated. So you need to be aware of this Andi, be aware of the things that you could do to help fix this problem. Okay, so let's talk about reward systems on behavioral management in the classroom. Now the most effective way off managing behavior in your classroom is through positive reinforcement. This increases your students self esteem with praise and encouragement. You shoot. Find that with praise and encouragement. Your students will want to please you. It will want to do well in your class, all right. Using rewards. Employing a reward system is almost always more effective than doling out punishments. Most students will respond well to reward things like stickers or toys or Candies are effective things to reward kids, but they become expensive. Andre become expected. If you start buying them once twice, three times in one month, they're going to expect it every lesson. I'm gonna be disappointed when you don't have any in the next lesson. So instead of bribing your students into good behaviors, try one of the following techniques as a reward. These air cheap and easy on effective methods of dealing out positive reinforcement in your classroom. More often than not, these will be more than enough to get Children to follow suit on, behave well in the class Number one. Give a student variable or written preys number to give them a star on their homework are on the board. Number three. Create a special board for your classroom. Include everyone's name on it. Reward the good behavior with a star on the bad behavior with a pink number four. Display their work in the classroom. Number five. Allow them to sit in a place of honor. This could be beside the teacher, are beside the board, are even just at the front, depending on the student number. Six. Give them a special hat. A little silly but can be quite effective. Number seven. Allo them to help the teacher. This was especially well for the smarty pants in the classrooms. They will all be bagging. To be teacher's assistant at it makes your job even easier. Number eight. Give them a special note to take home to their parents and make a big deal out of it as well. Write the note in front. Everybody sign it and get the TA to sign it as well on. Then give it to them in front of everyone as a ceremony. This will make everyone beg to get that letter next time. Number nine. Allow them to lead a group activity or a game as a reward for good answers or good behavior , they can come out and lead the game. They can even do some drilling for you again, making your job even easier. Number 10 allow them to help or to to another student. This can help with weaker students as well. Get the really clever student to help out with the weaker student on when the weaker student does well, give her or him a star or variable or written preys so still using the positive reinforcement techniques that are listed here. 3. Classroom management PART THREE: Hey, guys, well done for making it this far. Welcome to part Three of the classroom management treating this part. We're going to look at the general rules to manage a class, or also I look at my list world all else fails, things you can do for discipline techniques as well as this will look at roles and responsibilities off the teachers and students in the classroom. I hope you enjoy guys thank you rules to manage class ease. Why begin the class with clear rules and stick to them like we have discussed? You need clear rules at the beginning of your classes so the students will know what is expected off them. Be consistent with these rules and punish those that disobey them. If somebody speaks in another language, that's no English on one of your rules is always speak English, take a star or give them a warning. Make it clear you're not going to accept any breaking off the rules number to be clear to the students that your teacher and not a friend don't make the mistake of being too soft, that students will take advantage of that on in the long run, it will be detrimental to your class. Make sure they know the boundaries between teacher and student number three over plan. Do not have dead time. Make sure when you plan a lesson you have more than enough activities. Make sure you have extra activities if you have dead time. That's time where the Children can misbehave and lose concentration. So make sure there is no debt classroom order. Make sure you know what order your classroom is in. Make sure you know where you want the Children to be seated. Make sure you understand which Children need to be at the front and which Children need to be at the back. Which Children need extra attention. These are things you need to consider. Number five. Have a fast pace and changing environment. Don't do the same drills over and over on. Don't play this seeing games over and over. Repetition is key, but make sure you very and change the pace. If you do something exciting and fun than for five minutes, hath, um, candle on. Do some basic drills, then you can get them out. They're seats straight away. I do something fast and fun again. Change it up very the peace number six. Avoid yelling or losing your temper. Now we're all guilty Off this, we can let our emotions get the best of us. But just remember, they're just Children, but you're doing a fun and exciting job. Do not let them get the better off you. If a child is too much or makes you feel like you're going to lose your temper, take a step back and take a deep breath. A land. Decide your next course of action. Number seven. Avoid confrontations in front off the students. Now you're probably going to experience different types of tea. A's in the classroom. Some will be very good and very helpful and very experience. Others might not be. They might be knew they might be part time. They might know care. You may feel frustrated, are angry at times at the person that's meant to be there helping you and maybe they are not. No matter what, do not lose your temper or shout at them in the class. If you have something that you need to tell them, tell them at the break. Tell him before class are. Tell them after class do not do it in front. Off the students This will Onley reflect poorly on you. Number eight reward good behavior. Give them high fives. Get close to the Children. Make them sure Make them see that you care When they do well, make them want to do well by encouragement. Positive reinforcement number nine Be fair on respectful towards your students. Don't be too strict, but don't be too light either. Just make sure you have a happy medium on. Your students are not afraid of you But they're also not going to run wild. Number 10 have a sense of humor. This is a fun job. This is a great job. Don't take it so seriously that you can't have a laugh with the Children. Have fun, Enjoy yourself. Come out of class feeling happy and they will come out of class feeling happy as well? If all else fails, the likelihood is that you will be teaching many classes As many teachers that start jobs in Asia are teaching around 18 to 25 classes a week. So the probability is in a couple of those classes maybe even Mawr. You will have a few students that no amount Ah positive reinforcement or rewards will work with. Some Children are just naughty. So here are some ideas with problem Children you will experience in your classrooms. No. Make sure you've gone through all the positive reinforcement methods first. Before you try these moderate on more serious methods. One. Rub out the name or part off the letters off the name Children don't like being singled out on. This will make them lose face, especially in the classroom amongst their peers. If their name is Ben on, he's misbehaving on. He's done in a lot. Trouble his end and call him back. Number two. Lose team or individual stickers or points a gang peer pressure. If they lose a team sticker, the other members off the team will often tell them to behave are monitor their behavior for you. Three. Moved to another chair. Sit beside a quiet girl or boy. This could often stem a troublemaker. If he has to sit next to a girl, he might feel embarrassed. Or if he has to sit next to a quiet boy, he will not have asthma. Much opportunity to misbehave. Four. Stand up and say something in English again, singling them out. Make them stand up on Repeat a sentence in English. So this is forcibly making them speak. Also making them show off in front of the classmates on making them lose face five. Time the class. How long to be quiet? Now this can work on. This can also not work. You could be standing there for 10 seconds. You could be standing here for a minute or so. So judge for yourself how effective this is for that particular class. Six. Sit out of the game or next activity. Kids hate not to be included, especially if you're doing something fun. If they have to sit out, they will not like it. And hopefully that will make them behave the next time. But what happens if you have a consistently disruptive child or a couple of Children who have been given plenty of chances? You given them plenty of positive reinforcement and even tried the moderate methods. And nothing seems to work well. Here are some more serious methods that you can use at a last resort. One chat after class. Hold them back. Talk to him. It is a young child. Come down to their level. Look them in the eye and have a T eight. Translate if you need it, but discuss it with them. Ask them if they think their behavior is acceptable. See if you can get them to take responsibility to Naughty chair again. Sometimes very effective sometimes makes things worse. You have to judge for yourself. Single out the child, telling to move to the naughty chair with your back to the class or in a place where everyone could see them. Usually it will make them lose face, especially if they're younger. They will not like this at all. Three. Sit beside the teacher this way. You can keep an eye on them. You can keep hand on their shoulder if they're quite wild, and you can also stand there. Destructiveness. Four. Go for a walk with the third teacher to the bathroom. No, always recommend it, but if a child is getting too aggressive or trying to fight, are even crying. Take them with the T A r. The third teacher and take them outside. Let them go to the bathroom for a walk to cool down. Let him go and get a drink of water. 53 Strike rule single that child out, write their name on the board and tell them if they have three strikes than they're going to get punished three times. If you tell them and strike their name, then you will get a punishment to be that extra homework. Write some lines. Six. Send out of class Now This is again no highly recommended, but it is useful as a last resort. Schools can be a little disapproving off this method because they want the kids to be in class, and sometimes the parents will complain about it. But that gives you an opportunity to discuss with the school. Andi, the parent about the child's behavior, finally speak to the parents. A sandal letter hole. Final final last resorts speak to the parents. Get them in. They will not like that. That will not like how to discuss their child's behavior with the teacher, especially not the English teacher, which is usually a foreigner. Sending a letter home. You could do that via the school on. I would recommend you get translated into their native language as well, be it Chinese, Thai or Vietnamese or whatever, who? That was a lot of information.
