1. INTRODUCTION: Hi, I'm Guy and I will be guiding you through this course. I am a mother town English teach up and have taught in English schools online and have had my urn. English language school. Thanks for watching guys. I'll see you inside by. 2. Get Confident & Prepared: getting prepared and confident for an English job interview is 100% fundamental Now. A job interview is a stressful situation. Talking English is a stressful situation. Putting those things together can be a disastrous situation. If you don't know how to work on your confidence and your preparation, that's what I'm going to teach you in today's lesson strategies and techniques to help improve this. Now the first thing I want to teach you is that you'd need to accept your mistakes. You need to become comfortable with the idea that you're not mother tongue, so you will make mistakes. And you cannot expect yourself to be in the job interview and never make a mistake. First thing you must understand. The next thing you need to understand is that when you make a mistake, do not stop talking. Do not bring attention to your mistake. Take a deep breath and continue talking. The problems students have so much difficulty with fluency is because as they make mistakes , they stop. They become unsure, embarrassed and even worse, they stop correcting themselves. You don't want to do this even English job interview. You just want to keep talking and act like nothing happened. Put a big smile on your face. Keep your voice nice and strong. Maintain eye contact and continue with the interview. The next thing that is going to get confident and ready for the interview is to practice your answers. And it's something you were going to be doing throughout this whole course. Every time you learn how to answer a new interview question, you're going to do an exercise where you need to write the answer to that interview question. And then you are going to practice that question out loud. You can either record yourself with your farm practice in front of a mirror with friends, family members, even talking to yourself out loud while you're cooking dinner, It doesn't matter how you do it. The important thing is you do it out loud because if you hear your voice in English, you were becoming used to your voice. You'll become used to your pronunciation, and you will understand how to project your voice to sound as confident as possible. Another technique I want to teach you is how to get into the correct mind, set off the interviews in order to maintain your calmness. Now this again is something you can start doing right now until the minute before your interview. It's about visualization. I want you to take the time to close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and start imagining the job. Interviews, stud. Literally Think Suren yourself after the interview, sitting down in the chair. You have the interview in front of you. You have a table. You can see the objects on the table. Imagine the whole scenario. Then I want you to start to imagine yourself getting nervous, making mistakes. Your hands are getting sweating your daughter. What to say. Recreate these feelings now, once you feel like you're getting panicky, hopefully not too panicking but quite nervous. I want you to stop and take three big date breaths and stopped to calm yourself down. Now, why is this important? Because if you can recreate, there's nervous negative feelings at home not being in the interview and learn how to control those feelings and how to minimize those feelings. When you're eating your job interview and you start to feel nervous, it won't be as bad because you know how to handle the situation. You know how to come yourself down, so this is a fantastic thing that you could do every single day. The last thing I want to talk about getting prepared for your job interview is understanding your job description. Now this is something that I talk about. Threat, the whole course. That's how important it is. But understanding your job description is something you need to do way before you go ahead and not answered. Interview questions. The job description. Ease a text pretty much that outlines the ideal candidate the company or the recruiter wants to hire. It's where you understand what type off key skills and abilities, past work, experiences, qualities, qualifications you should have. Now understanding this means you understand what type of person you should be. If you're the right person for the job and how you should approach answering into new questions, it's something that is absolutely fundamental. Okay, guys. So these were the key tips and strategies I wanted to teach you before we even get started . Having a look of the interview questions 3. Breakdown of the Interview: Okay, so break down off your job interview. I know you know what a drop interviewees, but sometimes we think you have a water over parts in the interview. What? What do I actually have to expect from my interview? So this is what we're going to learn in this lesson. Now, the English job interview is broken up into a few different parts. You have the first part, which is introductions. Okay, so this is quite explanatory. It's where you're introducing yourself through the person that interviewing you. Okay, so hello. My name is guy a. Nice to meet you with a nice, strong handshake. It's important here. Obviously. Keep in mind your body language, your eye contact on to give a nice firm handshake because of these shows that your confidence and you are secure off yourself. The next part off the job interview is talking about yourself. Now, this is the part where the interviewer is obviously going toe asking questions about yourself. Behavioral questions. It is actually the next section off these course that we're going to be going through in detail. But it's just asking questions about how you work your personality, your abilities and your qualities. All right, sir, The third section is talking about your past experience, which is the most commonly thought off part off the job interview. A lot of students think that the job interview is just about this, but it's not. It is a main part of the job into you, however, and this is where the interview is going to start asking you questions, obviously, about your past work experience. So what type of jobs have you done? What a. Some of your mercy. Significant experiences. The second last part is about asking questions. Now. This is a part of the interview that escaped by a lot of students because the majority of people actually think that an interview is just about answering questions. But it's not. It's also about asking questions, and it's extremely in important because it shows person that's interviewing you, that you're prepared and that you're actually generally interested in the job. Interested enoughto want to ask questions and to want to hurt mawr information. And obviously the last part of your interview is the ending. So how do you end the interview thing? Good. By standing up again, shaking hands and just saying thank you for their time. It's a really nice thing to thank the person interviewing you for their time. It shows appreciation, and it also shows respect for the work that they do now. Guys, in your interview, I want you to aim for a few things. I want you to aim to be concise when you're speaking. That is, make sure what you say is detailed and specific. Dark. Get in the habit of talking too much and rambling and having what you say make nurse sense . The next thing you want to aim to be prepared, which you're already achieving that because you're here doing this course being prepared as much as possible. It's what's going to make the difference in terms of confidence and obviously how the interviewer sees you because you can tell when a person is prepared for an interview or when a person has just rocked up, sat down and answered the first thing that's come to the blind. The next two things are aimed to be a professional. Obviously you know, your at an interview. So you're not having a coffee with friends at a local bar. You want to be as professional as possible and obviously attentive and interested. Okay, so again, it's an interview. But it's not just you being asked questions. You can interact with the person interviewing you. And you can do these through your facial expressions nodding, saying yes a few times and even asking questions throughout the interview process. These shows that you are aware of the situation, that you're interested and that you actually want the job you're applying for. Okay, so that is a quick break town off your interview, actually ready to get into the rial course now? 4. PART 1 - Introduction to the STAR Formula: guys in this section, I am going to be teaching you about the secret formula, which is the star formula. The staff formula is an acronym that stands for s situation. T task. A action are result. Now these is absolutely fundamental for answering any of your interview questions because it enables you to give structure detailed questions where all of the information you give is 100% relevant. Relevancy is a key component toe answering interview questions. Now you are going to learn how to find specific examples used K vocabulary and give answers true, your interview that enable you to send unique and stand out from other candidates. I just want to remind you that at the end, off this section there is an exercise and a pdf explanation. Please do not go ahead to the next section without having completed these two tasks first. Very, very important. 5. S - Situation: s four situation the very first letter off a star formula that we're going to learn in this lesson now, before we do, I just want to give you some important information. When you're entering your interview questions. It is extremely important to use key examples, and that's why we are learning about the star formula A lot of the time. Students just list lots off qualities about themselves, attributes past experiences and they put them in big, long sentences and the information consume quite irrelevant. And more often than not, the interviewer says, OK, I have this big list of qualities, But when did you use these qualities? How did you use these qualities? What did you achieve from these qualities? These questions the interviewer wants you to answer through your answers to the inter new questions and the star formula enables you to do this. Now. The first part of the staff formula is talking about a situation. Now. Your situation will change depending on the question you have, Bean asked. Depending on where you've been, asked a question that past experiences, qualifications, your general skills and abilities in your situation, you want to talk about an event okay, Something that happened where you have to use a skill, a particular experience where you learn something. An example that enables you to shirt how you used an attribute and what you achieved from it. Let me give you an example. So if the interviewer asks your questions such as Can you talk to me about one of your key past experiences for situation? You could say something like, Yeah, sure. So as you know, I am a marketing manager, and in 2000 and five, I had the opportunity to work internationally with one off our collaborative offices. Now, as you can say, this is a very simple sentence. Okay? Early one centered. That's life easy. But it gives the outline of a particular situation, and from this situation you are then able to continue with the start formula. We can give more detail, and by the end of it, the interview. You can understand what you achieved from of this particular past experience and why give this past experience so important 6. T - Task: t four task The second part off out Star formula. Now a task is a particular action that you guys have to take in the situation that you used as an example. A tusk could be anything. It could be managing your time efficiently. It could be a setting up collaborative meetings. It could be budgeting for certain projects. Okay, a particular action you had to take. Now let me give you an example. I'm going to use the same question we worked on for situation. Which waas Can you talk to me about? A key experience and the example Answer I can give for task. Could be at the beginning off the year I was given a list of projects I had to complete. However, the projects had to be completed in quite a type budget. So it was my task to understand how to finish all of these projects effectively within the required budget again, a very simple sentence. It outlined a particular action you had to take. It doesn't give too much detail about how you do these all. Why didn't you just outlined what you had to do? Like I said, this is the task section for the star formula 7. A - Action: a for action. Okay, This is the next step in ASTA formula in this section. You're going to talk about what you did in order to achieve the task. Okay, So what did What did you have to do? What actions took place? Did you implement something? Did you have to speak to somebody? Did you have tow all the nice something, create something, review something? It's the action that took place in order to achieve a particular task. Let's look at an example. So again, we're following the question. Talk to eradicate experience and an example for the action could be in order to complete the projects within the budget, I set up meetings with out tech providers in order to see if there was a way we could make some cutbacks and we could find some solutions in order to keep within our budget. I then called out to the other departments in order to share the information so that we were able to collaborate together and understand how we have toe approach the projects. Okay, so this is quite a detailed example on an action that you took in orderto achieve a specific task again. Guys remembering you don't need to give a paragraph. These at just one sentence answers that all put together, they're going to get a complete answer to an interview question. 8. R - Result: are full result out very last part off the star formula. Now that you've understood what the situation is, the task is and the action you want to show the interview of what you achieved from the action you talk when talking about your results. It's quite common to just want to give, you know, a sentence, explaining what you achieved, but it's a lot more effective to use numbers in your answers. For example, Percentages, Dates, figures. This speaks a lot more than words and has a more factual impact on the interviewer. Let's have a look at an example again. We're working with the same question, talking about a specific past experience and your results could be even though I had a budget and I had many projects to complete under the budget, I was able to complete 15 projects ahead off time within the budget in 2000 and sustains, and these projects were completed with a 2% higher conversion rate, which was something fantastic for our team, and it was acknowledged by my supervisors. So, as you can see here, in my example, I've you statistics and I used numbers and dates, which gives what I am saying a lot more importance. Alright, guys. So that was the last thing in regard to the star formula. The results. And we can get started without next listen. 9. STAR Formula Overview: the star overview. Okay, guys saw in this video we are going toe. Obviously be looking at the staff formula on. We're going to be putting together all the information that you've been told about this formula so you can understand it a little bit better. Now, I'm going to start off by giving you a complete example off the star formula. Then we're gonna move on to analyzing this example, and then I'm gonna give you a little bit of advice to finish off this lesson. Now, the question we're going to be answering is talk to me about a significant past experience . As you know, I'm a marketing manager. And in 2005 I had the opportunity to work collaboratively with one of our international offices. At the beginning of the year, I was given a list of projects I had to complete in a limited budget. So it was my task to understand how to complete all these projects within the required budget. In order to complete all the projects within the budget, I set up meetings without tick team to see if there are any solutions or cutbacks we could make to the projects in order to keep within the budget. I've been called out to the other department so I could share this information with them so we could collaborate together to understand how to approach the projects. Even though I had quite a limited budget and many projects, I was able to complaint 15 projects in 2005 ahead of time and within the required budget. These projects achieved a 2% higher conversion right compared to the previous year. And my team and I were acknowledged for our hard work. All right, so that's our example of the star formula being used to answer an interview question. Now I want to go through and analyse it just to point out the key areas off the star formula and how I answered the question effectively. So, as you know, or the first part of the star formula is s for situation. Now we know a situation is a particular event or something. You find yourself in a particular experience, something you learned or something you had to do in this example. The situation I gave was that I was working internationally for a company and had to collaborate with different offices. This is the situation that I found myself in and this set the framework off the experience . I am going to speak that the next part of the star formula is t for task. Okay, Something that you had to do with in this situation. Now, in my example, my task was that I had to create many projects, but under a quite a limited budget. Okay, so this was my task. I needed to understand how to execute this task and how to achieve these results off completing a certain amount of projects under a limited budget. Now, the next part of our staff formula is a four action. How did I complete these tasks? What did I do? What actions did I take now? In the example I gave, I mentioned that I got into contact with tech providers. I set up meetings with them, so we were able to brainstorm solutions and understand if there were cutbacks I could make . So if I could understand there were certain areas of the project, we could spend less money in order to stay within the budget. This was the action that I took and our last part of the star formula are full results. So what was the outcome off this action That you talk again? In my example, the result was that I was able to complete 15 projects ahead off time. I was able to stay under the budget, and a result of this was that we achieved a 2% high conversion rate compared to the other years and were acknowledged by our work. Okay, so this is the result off the action. I talk. Okay, So what you can say from this example is a very clear and detailed division off the star formula. It doesn't have to be over detailed. You don't need to include more than one example. You simply need to use one or two example sentences in each section situation, task, action and result. Now, you can also note that in my results section I included numbers and figures. I did mention this already before, but I want to tell you again how important it is to your statistics and numbers when you're talking about a result. It's fantastic to use adjectives and to say that everybody was really happy with the result . But this is leaning towards talking about feelings and in a job interview. It's a lot more effective to talk about numbers because numbers speak louder than words and this goes 100% in your job interview. Now, using the star formula to answer your interview questions is all about structure and preparation. And this is why I stress it sore much to you guys and so much to my students who are preparing for job interviews because it's really easy to enter a job interview and feel very nervous and get caught up with the job interview atmosphere. You can start to forget exactly what you have to say, and you tend to ramble when you have to answer questions. Rambling is when you say a lot, but it doesn't have too much meaning. Structuring your answers and preparing your answers within the start formula. It helps you avoid this situation. So your aunt's has become very concise and specific, and you revolve every answer around. An example. An example that shows the interviewer how you handle certain situations, how particular skills that you have benefit you in the workplace and how capable you are to do the job at hand. So please remember throughout this course as you're preparing for the interview questions do break everything up using the star formula and concentrate all of your answers around one specific example that demonstrates a certain quality quality that is mentioned or in the job description, or that you know or will benefit you in the job interview. 10. PART 2 - Introduction to Grammar: avoiding key grammar mistakes. Guys in this section you are going to learn about English drama, but not all of English grammar. Just the main Gramma you need to know and remember for your English job interview. You are going to go ahead and read some extremely important PdF's and do all of the exercises because they going to help you revise simple grammar but also become aware off what type off grammatical structures you need to use in regards to which interview questions. This is important because interview questions obviously change between past, present and future. Do you need to understand how to use the tenses correctly, and in this section you are going to learn how to do this, which is really, really going to help you increase your confidence and fluency because in the job interview , if you're confident that your grandma well, that's a key thing, because Grandma is, it's quite common to make grammatical mistakes. So this is really gonna help you guys 11. Present Simple vs Present Continuous (Common Mistakes): president. Simple versus present. Continuous. These are two very basic tenses in English, but they are confused a lot of the time by the majority off students. Now in particularly for your English job interview, these two tenses are extremely important because you're going to need to use them when you're talking about your routines, all the things that you do daily or right now in your life. Now, when answering questions such as, for example, where are you working at the moment? Talk to me about your work routine or what is a typical work week. Like for you? The present, simple and the present continuous are fundamental. Now let's compare these true tenses. Let's have a look first at the present. Simple. Now the present simple is a tense that we use obviously to speak about the present. But in particularly, we use it to speak about our routines, habits and things that are considered to always be true, such as fax or even feelings or states off being. How do we construct the present? Simple. What is the rule? How do we use it in a sentence? Okay, well with the present simple, like all other tenses It all revolves around an auxiliary verb and in the present, simple. The auxiliary verb that we need to use these do do, don't does doesn't. These are the different forms. Now let's have a look at the construction off the sentences in positive sentences. We do not need to use the auxiliary verb. We can simply use the base form off the verb. For example, I work on weekends subject verb. I work on weekends when we use it for the third person Singular off. We need to change our sentence a little bit. And we say, for example, he she or eat works on weekends. So, as you can tell, the difference between I work and she works is that with the third person singular, we must add the S to the end off the active verb. We do this in order to understand that we're speaking about the third person singular. He she eat works on the weekends in the plural they we or you work on the weekend and it stays without the s. Now let's have a look at our negative sentences now went forming negative sentences in the present simple. We must use the auxiliary verb do Plus not and the contracted version is don't now in spoken English, it is a lot more common to use the contracted version when we are using the present Simple in the negative. Let's look at some examples. I don't work on the weekends. Now, when we are using the contracted version in the third person singular instead of using don't we must use, doesn't he? She eat doesn't work on the weekends. Now, an important thing to remember in which you can see in this example is when we're using the third person singular in the negative we use doesn't. But the active verb in this case, work does not have an s at the end. This is because we understand that it is in the third person by the use off. Doesn't so there is no longer need to put s at the end of the active verb. He she it doesn't work on the weekends in the plural. They we you don't work on the weekends. Now let's have a look at questions As you know, when we're forming a question in English, we must put the auxiliary va before the subject, for example, do you? They We work on the weekends in the third person. Singular. Again we use does Does he she eat work on the weekends guy? So this is an example of how we structure the present simple enough sentences. Okay. So again, do you remember that we are only add the s two positive sentences to the verb in the third person. Singular in questions we used Drew or does, and in negative sentences we used Don't four doesn't. Okay, so let's move on and have a look at our present continuous now the present continuous. We used to speak about actions that we're doing in the moment off speaking things you're doing right now. Or we can also use the present continuous to talk about temporary present actions or situations, things that are happening only for a specific period off time. For example, one month, two weeks, three weeks. They will not continue past this time that temporary. Okay, so let's have a look of the construction off the present continuous. Now, when we use the present continuous, we always use the verb to be plus al verb in the i n G form. It is important to remember that the verb to be must be conjugated, so it needs to change depending on our subject. Let's have a look at positive sentences. For example, I am studying Sayer. I am studying sales so we can say we have the verb to be, um plus al verb in the i n g studying you. They we are studying stare. He she eat is studying Sayer in negative sentences. Out construction is the same, but we need to add not for example, I'm not studying Sayer. You're not they're not where not studying Stare he she eat isn't studying sehr Take note how I've used the contracted versions off the negative auxiliary verbs. As I said in spoken English, it is a lot more common to use the contracted instead off the full version. Now in questions again, we need to use Alva before out subject on we have for example, are you they we studying Steyer is Hey, she eat studying Sayer, please remember that we always use the construction verb to be plus verb in the ink form in the present continuous and four out negative sentences, we add not 12. Present Perfect vs Past Simple (Common Mistakes): isn't perfect versus the past. Simple. These are two extremely common tenses in English that we used to speak about past actions, and they air the two tenses that students particularly confused the most. Now, why are these two tenses important? Well, obviously, because when you are in your job interview the majority of the time, you are going to be speaking about all your past work experiences or past actions. So things that you did in your past. So you're going to need to know how to effectively use the past, simple and the present perfect. Let's have a look at the past. Simple first. So we use the past simple for finished actions in the past, an action that has no connection to the present. So it's something that you did yesterday or two weeks ago, and it has nothing to do with the present moment. For example, yesterday I went to work, but today I am at home. So, for example, in this example, you can understand the difference off what a finished action is because the action off going to work happened yesterday and it has no connection to the present because in the present moment I am at home, so it is a separate action from the present. Let's have a look how the past simple is conjugated so in the past. Simple. We use the auxiliary river did and didn't to congregate. Our sentences we used, did or didn't. When we are wanting to say negative sentences or out questions in our positive sentences instead, we just need to calm you.
