About This Class

In this class I will show you how to illustrate a landscape in Procreate. I will be using the iPad and apple pencil. In this class you will learn key concepts in drawing landscapes, such as atmospheric perspective, lighting placement, and using colours. As well as how to use the app Procreate and apple pencil to create this illustration. I will be including my own tree brush in this class for you to download and use in your drawing.


At the end of the class you will have a completed digital landscape illustration you have created, following my techniques and tips. The illustration can be used as a background, printed as an art piece, or shared on your social media, or added to your illustration portfolio. You can also use the tips you learned in this class when creating more traditional art pieces, such as paintings. 

This class is for everyone. Procreate knowledge is helpful, but I will be going through the whole project step by step. Also I will be showing you exactly how i create my illustration, so previous illustration experience is also not necessary.

1. Intro: Hey there, I'm Suzy. I'm an illustrator and designer from Vancouver, Canada. In this class, I will show you how to illustrate a landscape and procreate. I will be using the iPad and apple pencil. In this class, you will learn key concepts in drawing landscapes such as atmospheric perspective and lighting placement. I will include my own tree brush in this class for you to download in using your drawing. It makes it easy to create quick and good looking trees. At the end of the class, you will have a completed landscape illustration that you have created. Following the techniques and tips, you can use your drawing for backgrounds printed out as artwork shared on your social media or add it to your illustration portfolio. You can also use the tips you learned in this class when creating more traditional art pieces such as paintings. This class is for everyone. Procreate. Knowledge is helpful, but I will be going through the whole project step by step. Also, I will be showing you exactly how I create my illustration, so no previous illustration experience is necessary. I am so excited to share this class with you, so let's go ahead and get started 2. Atompheric perspective and lighting: So before we start drawing, I'm going to share with you some tips to keep in mind while you create your landscape illustration. First, we'll cover atmospheric perspective. This is how the atmosphere affects how we see an object as they recede into the distance. The further away the object is to the viewer, the less saturated, detailed and the lighter it is. Also, it has a blue tone, the further away it is. As you can see in this photo, the background mountains are the latest objects and their blue toned. They have the least amount of detail. The mid ground trees are also blue toned but more saturated. They're slightly more detailed in the mountains, and they are also a bit darker. The foreground trees are the darkest and the most saturated, and they have the most detail. This is because they're the closest to the viewer. This photo is a great example of atmospheric perspective. Now let's talk a bit about lighting in the daylight. The latest part of the landscape should be this guy. Also keep in mind that contrast. Attract the eye, so make the focal point of your illustration. The most contrast ID highlights on objects are placed where the sun would naturally hit the objects and shadows fall opposite of the highlights. As you can see in this image, the sky is the lightest part, as well as the water that's reflecting this guy, and the mountains have great contrast year. You can see the highlights, and the shadows make thes mountains look really good in this photo, son in this photo is coming in from the left so you could see that the left part of the mountains are the highlighted parts and the right parts arm or in the shadows. 3. Element sizing and framing: Now let's go over a few more tips before we get started. Let's start with overlapping elements to separate the background, the mid ground and the foreground. In this picture, you can see the element are overlapping. There is the mountains in the background, and then in the mid ground there are these row of trees and this mountain right behind it. And then in the foreground, there's this tree right here on the left. As you can see, they all overlap in this picture, and it just creates more depth. This is one of my favorite pictures that I found in was a big inspiration for my illustrations. Another thing to keep in mind is that elements further away are smaller and, of course, closer to you are bigger. I know this seems like a very simple tip, but it can be really easy to forget this while you're drawing and you can see in all of these trees over here, the ones that are the closest to the viewer are the biggest, and the ones that are the further away are the smallest. And here's a final tip that I really like to do in my illustrations is framing with trees. This is just putting trees on either side of your illustration just to give a nice frame to your image. This just draws the viewer's eye into your drawing and really create some depth and interest. 4. Refrences and colours: Now let's go over referencing photos for your illustration and sampling colors so you can go ahead and find some pictures for reference for a layout of your illustration and also for color inspiration. I like using picks, obey, unflashy and Pinterest. Let me show you how I do this. So on my iPad, I just went toe pics obey dot com, and I'm searching in the search bar for landscapes. Lots of beautiful images come up, and I scroll through to see the ones that inspire me in either color or in the layout of the landscape. When I find an image that I like, I click on it and then I press the download button to download it to my iPad. Websites like Pinterest dot com and unspool ash dot com are great, too, but I found a lot of great landscape pictures on picks. Obey basically everyone you see in this class I found on there, so I thought I'd share that resource with you. Now I'm creating a new procreate pile. I'm just using the's screen size here, as I usually do. I click the wrench icon and click add a photo and then I go into my album, and I choose the photo that I would like to use. I'm just creating a little bit of a mood board or a color palette to inspire me for my illustration. I'm just adding the images that I found that I find the most inspiring, both in color and in the way that the landscape is Lehto. Now I'm going to create a color palette. I'm just going to click the layers and then press the plus button here to make a new layer . Then I'm going to go to my brush. I'm going to use my studio pen brush, which is one of my favorites. You can find it in the Thinking Brush library, and then I'm going to draw circles. So just draw a circle and then hold with your left finger, and it makes a perfect circle, and you can just adjust it to the size that you'd like. Then I fill it by dragging in the color. This isn't the color that I'm going to use yet, but it's a place or color. Now. I swiped left on the layer to duplicate, and then I press the move tool, and then I drag it right beside the other circle. Then I pinched these layers together to combine them. And then I swipe again to duplicate. And then I use the move tool again. And then I put them beside each other again. I suggest for your color palette to do shades of about 3 to 5 colors. Again, I'm going to the layers and then pinching to combine them and then duplicating that layer again and then moving right underneath. Now I have eight circles that I can use to fill up with the colors that I like to use. I really like the light blue in the sky in this photo. So I just hold my finger on top of it to sample it and then drag the color into the circle right from the top. I continue to do this to complete my color palette, changing it up as I go along to make it exactly how I want. I really enjoy the sunset colors for landscapes, so I'm using a lot of the yellows and the oranges in this illustration. Of course, you can use whatever colors that you like in your illustration. I continue to do this and go through all the colors, refining it until I get my full color palette. When I'm done creating this color palette, then I'm going to save it into pro creates palette creature. So I'm going to go click on the colors and then I'm gonna click the palate feature down below and the plus sign to make a new +11 should pop up, and it will be automatically selected when you go back to the colors for you to fill. Now I'm going to sample the color by holding with my finger again and then tapping on a spot in the palate. And I continue to do this with all the shades. As you can see, I chose three types of blues, three types of greens and then an orange and a yellow. When I'm going through my drawing. I'm also going to be changing the tones and saturation of these just a little bit, but these are a great starting point 5. Sketching: OK, now let's get started withdrawing. We'll start with sketching. Take a look at a variety of reference images that you found to create your own unique illustration. Also, take this time to decide on the focal point of your illustration. I decided to make mine a mountain. I really like this image, so I'm keeping it on my iPhone to references while I'm sketching out my drawing. I'm just going in with a pencil brush here, and I'm using a black color. I'm just clicking it, using the color selection and just on one layer, I'm just really roughly drawing out how I would like my illustration toe Look, just where the elements are going to be placed. This is very rough, and I end up switching it around a lot once I creating. You can take a lot more time and be very specific on your sketch if you'd like. But I like to work with just a really rough sketch and then refine it later on. But you can use whatever style works for you. Also keep in mind it's good to reference a bunch of different images, or think of something in your head that you'd like to draw. It's way more interesting. Instead of just copying one picture where you can add more elements from all the other pictures. Also, as you're doing this, think about how the objects are going to overlap. What is going to be in your background, mid ground and foreground? Where you going to replace your trees? Are you gonna have a mountain? Are you gonna have a lake? Think of all these things while you're doing this. My focal point is going to be the mountain. So I'm just deciding where the mountain is going to sit in this illustration as well. Of course, like you'll see, I definitely switch this up. But this is a very good starting point for my illustration, even though it is pretty rough when I'm done this rough sketch. Then I just click the layer that the sketches on. And then I turned down the opacity just so it could be light enough that I can see it, but not too dark that it interferes with my drawing. Now we're ready to get started with the rest of the illustration. 6. Background: Okay, so we're gonna be starting with the sky as the background, and I'm just going to click the layer panel here and press the plus button for a new layer thin. I'm going to go to my brushes library and for the back ground sky. I'm going to be using the brush cotton that comes with procreate. And then I'm going to my color palette here, and I'm choosing my yellow color, and then I'm just drawing in around where my sky would be. I'm just putting the colors where I would like them in the sky, and then I'm going to blend them together at the end. I switch up the color a little bit of the lighter yellow here just because I wanted it just to be a bit brighter in this guy. And then I go to my orange and I add that on top or a sunset, I'm doing the yellow closer to where the sun would be. And then it kind of gradually fades from orange into the blue sky color. And then I am choosing my blue here, and I'm just making it a bit lighter. As you can see, I tapped on my palette to add that other shade of blue. It's good to have a palate as a starting point, but I like to add to it as I go. Now I am grabbing the darker blue, and I'm just gonna add this at the very top my sky. Now I'm going to click this much brush, and I'm going to get my same cotton brush and I'm going to blend them together. And then when I'm happy with that, I'm going to move on to a mountain. This mountain is going to be in the far off background, so I'm going to create another layer by pressing the plus button again. And then I'm going to choose a lighter blue color here. And then I'm going to my brushes and I'm going to choose the marker brush and then I just draw in a rough shape of the mountain. Later on, I actually changed this shape, but this is the one that I started out with. Also, don't be afraid to press the undo button that I just did on the left. I do that a lot. You can also double tap to undo, but I find that a little finicky. I usually just Preston do button, but you could do whichever one you like. Now I make another layer and I grabbed the cotton brush and then a blue color and they make it lighter than my mountain. And I just use this toe a little bit of fog at the bottom of my mouth. Up next, I'm going to show you how I create my focal point. 7. Mountain: Okay, now we're going to move on to the main mountain, so I'm going to add another layer, and then I'm going to grab a dark blue. And then I added that blue to my palette as well. And then I'm going to grab the marker brush and then I'm going to draw the outline of my mountain. So I'm just going to draw peaks here, just little triangles, making sure to connect them all together. This is my favorite way to draw mountains. It's really quick and easy, but it looks really good and making my mountain higher on the left side and lower in the middle, just to create the depth in my drawing and then go ahead and connect my mountain at the bottom. Don't worry too much about how this looks at the bottom because it's going to be covered up on the night drag to fill. As you can see here, it didn't work. I had to undo. Just have to make sure that all of your shape is closed or else it won't feel properly. After I got my rough shape here of my mountain, I'm going to go ahead and start with the snow on the mountain. So I'm going to click my layer and then hit Alfa Lock. And then I'm going to grab the clay brush and then I'm going to choose a white color on my palette. Alfa Lock allows you to color within the shape only so you won't go outside of the shape. So it worked perfect for the snow on the mountain effect. Now I'm adding the snow. Since the snow is going to be sort of like the highlight of our mountain, I'm adding it where the highlights would be. And since the sun is in the middle of my drawing, I'm making all of the right side of my mountain where the highlight would hit. So I'm just going over with my brush here and you can see that I'm doing it fairly quickly . It's pretty easy. You just have to make sure that you're leaving some dark spots on your mountain here for the shadows. You can go over some spot that you wanted extra highlight again, and it just makes it even whiter. And then, once you're happy with that, let's go ahead and add the shadows. So I'm going to grab a light blue color. And then I'm going to add in thes light blue color right where the shadows would be on the mountain right where all my dark area is. But be sure to still leave a little bit of the dark poking through to give this really cool mountain event. You could spend a lot of time on this refining it make getting it perfect. I just did mind really quickly just to show you guys in this video, but you can definitely take your time with this step. Now I'm just going to add the color for the lake in here. I'll add another layer and then I'll hold and drag to put it at the bottom and then I'll grab my light blue color and then I will draw around where the lake will be with my marker brush, and then I will fill it in. Then I just grab a even lighter color like a white color here. And then I go in with the cotton brush and I just add a little bit of extra dimension to my leak. Okay, and then after this, I'm going to show you how to use the tree brush and we're going to do the trees 8. Tree brush: okay now going to show you how to use my tree brush. My tree brush is located in the project section of this class, and it's labeled as Susie. Liz brushes. You can go ahead and click it and download it directly on your iPad, and when you open it, it will open automatically in procreate. And then it should be in your brushes panel and it should be under the name Susie lives brushes, so I'll show you an example Tree here. So I'm going to select my brush here and I'm using a green and I'm going to pull up with the brush and then I hold, make a straight line, and then I'll going to do branches that go facing upwards. It's really important to note that this brush on Lee works when you use upward motions and you can make them tighter at the top and then figure branches at the bottom. So you get this nice tree shape. So I used a darker green now to sampling my previous tree to get a lighter green here, and I'm just filling in the branches a bit more, making two shades of green for your tree. Just adds more depth. Your tree. You can go ahead and play around with this brush and play around with trees of the way you like them. It's a lot of fun to play with this one. It's also important to note that this works best when it's on a landscape shape background . Now let's go ahead and use this brush in our drying. 9. Midground trees and reflections: Okay, Now we're going to add some mid ground trees, so I'm going to create another layer, and I'm going to drag it to the top here. As you can see, I'm working from the background and then making my weight forward. I'm going to grab a green color and the marker brush, and then I'm going to put in a line for where I want my trees to be, and then notice that my mountains peeking out a bit. So I go back to my mountain layer, oppressive the erase button, and I just erased that one part of the mountain. Now I'm going to add another layer here, and then I'm going to get my tree brush. As you can see in the previous clip, this brush is good for making big trees, but also really far away trees as well. All you have to do is remember to do on upwards motion. And don't forget that you want the trees furthest away for you to be the smallest and the ones closest to you to be the biggest and the tallest. And also you can adjust the size of the brush. Of course, using the brush size slider on the top left. Now I'm going to zoom in and just Bill in the bottom part of my tree line. I'm just using the same tree brush and I'm making it really small. And I'm just going between the trees and the line that I created just to make it more filled it. And then it was at this point I decided that I didn't really like my background mountain. I thought it was to ground, so I decided to go ahead and just change it up. I just completely deleted this layer. I just clicked my layer panel and then I swiped right, and then press the delete button and then I just read it again. Don't be afraid to go back and change up things in your drawing. You can really play around and make something great. Don't worry about mistakes. You can always fix up. Then I created a new layer and I created fog just like before, using my cot and brush and a light blue color. And this time I'm doing it right underneath my bake mountain. As you can see, I didn't complete my tree line all the way to the left. That's because I'm going to be covering that with my foreground trees now going to use these much icon and have my wet acrylic brush selected here, the one that comes with procreate. And then I'm going to make sure that I'm on my tree layer and then I'm going to use this ad reflections into my late. So I'm just going to pull straight downwards to create the reflections again. I'm using the web. Acrylic brush comes with procreate. And I'm using this much feature right now, making sure that I'm on the same layer as my trees and then pulling straight downwards, making sure not to pull right or left. This just gives a really cool effect in the water. As a reflection, you can even pull out your reflections further than I did in this painting. It looks really cool. And now up next, I'm going to show you how I create the foreground trees 10. Foreground trees: so on a new layer. I'm using my market brush and a darker green color, and I'm going to create a little hill here on the left. Then I'm going to create a new layer and then use my tree brush. And just like I already showed, I'm going to create this tree using an upward motion so going upwards and outwards to create the branches of this tree. And then I'm going to put a tree right beside that one. Then I'm going to grab a lighter green, and then I'm going to fill in the spaces between the branches. Now I'm going to add some texture on this hill. I'm going to go back and select the layer that it's on and then press awful look, and then I'm going to select the clay brush again that comes and procreate, and I'm just going to use this to add some texture to the hill. I'm going to add a nice big tree on the right. I'm going to make a another layer, and then I'm going to select my tree brush again, and I have a dark color here selected, and I'm going to up the size of my brush just so I could make it a nice, tall, big tree. And then I go up and I hold just to make sure that it's nice and straight. And then I continue using the upwards motion to fill in the rest of the tree branches, and now I'm clicking on my big tree layer and I'm turning on Alfa Lock and then I'm grabbing a lighter green color. I'm just gonna show you a different way of highlighting this tree instead of adding in different color branches. You can do it this way instead going to go to the clay brush, and then I'm going to fill in the side of my tree, and this just gives nice looking highlights on your tree without having to add any extra branches. I found that this is a better way to highlight a tree that is closer. I just filled in a couple more darker branches at the bottom and then are drawing is complete 11. Exporting: and then to share your image. All you have to do is click the wrench I common on the top left press share, and then I'm exporting mine as a PNG file and then just press save, and it should be saved to your photo album. 12. Class project: Okay, now it's your turn. The project for this class will be completing a landscape illustration in procreate and sharing it to the Project gallery. Follow my steps to complete this drawing, and you can use my brush if you like. You can share either a P and G or a J pic of your landscape illustration.
