Welcome to Draw 3D Banners in Procreate for the iPad, part of my series of taking your art from Flat to Phat by making your drawings look more 3D and jump off the screen! In this class, you will learn how to draw a three-dimensional banner in Procreate on your iPad and how to add words and phrases.  

You will learn skills to render flat shapes into forms that jump off the page.  Your banners will look incredible and go beyond just an outline.

1. Introduction: Hey, guys, it's Lisa Long from Lisa Long Designs. I am a digital lettering artist and illustrator. I also have taught in public schools for the last 11 years, and I'm here to bring you a fund class to learn how to draw three D banners on the iPad and procreate. I will take you through the process of how to draw a banner and show you the process I use to make it look three dimensional. I love three D, and I love procreate, and I love everything that you could do inside appropriate. So I'm really excited to share this with you. I'll be taking you through how to use masks and how to use the select function and a little bit about blend modes and layers and how to make the most of them for this project. This classes for anyone wanting toe up there procreate game. Of course, you'll need to have an iPad compatible with the apple pencil, an apple pencil and the at procreate. So gather up your supplies. I'm really excited, so let's just get started and jump right in 2. About Masks: this first lesson, I'm gonna explain to you some of the fundamentals to understand how to do this project. So we're gonna learn about masks. Masks are pretty great. Um, I'm gonna go in and open up a new screen size. This is it. 2224 by 1668 pixels. So you're gonna get the same results if you use a similar pixels. If you use larger pixels or more pixels, you will get a different result. And if you use less pixels, you're going to get a way different results. So it definitely matters how many pixels you're using on your image. So with masks, let's say I want to add a mask to my layer. So I'm going to click on my layer and click mask. And now I have this layer pop up above that says mask layer mask. Essentially, what a layer mask is is kind of a window. It only allows certain areas to show, and it covers up the rest. But it doesn't actually erase your drawing. So I used I'm gonna use him cut out paper to do this. So if I were to mask my image. It's kind of like all the black areas are the areas that are gonna be covered, and any white areas are the areas that will show through. So if my images black except for this area, anything I color into this area, it's gonna go through. It's kind of like a stencil, right? This is like a stencil. And if I have other areas covered, I want to use this one. It's like a puzzle that I'm only going to see those certain areas. So we are gonna be creating three layers for this banner, and you can always, you know, make it more complicated later with other banners. But like with this mask, if the lines weren't showing, you would only be able to color in these areas. Okay, so that's how masks work. If the whole thing was black, none of it would show. And if opposite, if I just had the black areas here, I would be able to color all around in this area. But nothing in the black would show. Let's see how that looks in real time on the iPad. So when I go into here and I create a mask, I'm immediately gonna notice that I cannot get an actual color. It'll just be gray, black or white to choose from. If I'm in the layer mask now, I go back to the layer. Aiken, go and choose any color, and this dot will change to that color. So that's something to be aware of. Make sure you're highlighting your layer mask, and so with that, you can get shades of gray only, which means you can have total exposure or areas where or maybe half coming through and then fully covered is black, so you can have degrees of covered nous to That's pretty cool. So if I come in with my layer mask and I fill my layer with white, nothing changes. I come in and fill it with black. It fills in with black, and you can see that here. So now this whole thing is covered. When I go back here and I try to draw something, nothing's gonna show. But as you can see in my layer, it's there. So if I turn my mask off, you can see that. Now let's go inside my mask and use white and start shaving in with white. You'll start to see the image underneath pop through. Okay, And then when you go here, you notice those dots of their So now it's masking my layer and opposite you can clear this out and go into black, and you can actually cover the parts you don't want to see. So that's those air. Some ways you can do it just by manually covering at places or exposing. And that's how masks work. Alternately, if you have something drawn, I have something drawn here. I can select this area and go in and fill, and it will cover just that. And I can always invert my mask. And now this area is covered. Everything in the black is covered. So if I draw outside of here, you're not gonna see it. You will see anything that comes on top of here. And that works well when you're creating something we're gonna greet today. So you can always select and then make a mask in a new layer. And anything you put in that layer will only be seen through that mask 3. Drawing a Banner: I'm going to be using all native brushes to procreate so you won't have to go download anything. But if you did take my printmaking course or you haven't yet, I do have some free printmaking brushes that you can download from there. So today I'm gonna be using the monoline brush for my outlines. And I will be using some of the texture brushes inside. Appropriate. I'm going to start with, um, with black and my monoline brush and just get it a small as you can capacity at 100%. And we're just gonna kind of drawer been. And I like to draw the top part and then this is fun. Neat trick. You could just duplicate that select. Make sure Magnetics turn on and just drag it down. However thick you want your ribbon to be and create a new layer on top of that and use kind of zoom in. If you need Teoh and just draw, connect that area. You want to connect the ribbon on this side of the banner You want to connect this down to the top edge. You can zoom in, really get I cannot get right on the edge there. And then, since this is not on the same layer, you can erase without erasing the other lines. Okay, so I have that part done, and all I need to do now is going in. Erase this area here, which is super easy to do. And I like to use the heart your brush for erasing, uh, not gonna erase my line from the above layers, meet little trick, working in layers, and then I want to clean this line up a little bit before emerged them all together, not up looking. Perfect. Now, I could just merge these all together, create a new layer, and I want to know kind of recreate this little thing here going on on this side. So just gonna do that. I like it. Move this over a little bit. Have enough room to groove. Um, what kind of go? At the same angle. They're a little better now. This is just our rough draft, so we can always change things. Now I can duplicate that on Did a ragged right above. Don't worry. It doesn't make it just exit out. Try again. I like to use my finger when I do this because it's less chance of me slipping with my lovely couple pencil. Now I concretely layer go in, and I'm gonna connect these two because I want to push this behind. Put this off here on connected these? I don't have to be perfect. Now, I can just go back in here, race this guy. Nice to know we have a banner gonna merge all of these layers together. All right, so this is gonna be our base layer and what we're gonna draw on top of. So what I'm gonna do is take the opacity down pretty low. So much lower the capacities I can draw right on top of it. So I wanna make a new layer above that. 4. Drawing Banner Shapes: We just drew the banner, and now we're going to create shapes for the banner. So I have my bass player and the layer above it. I use my monoline brush again, and all I want to do now is create some cutouts. 1st 1 I want is gonna be the ribbon part, the front part. That's one section. So let's just draw that real quick. That's a first shape. So what you can do? It's Jake a little. Your first line here, Duplicate it, We'll bring it down. That's what we did in the beginning. And then you can merge those together, create a new layer. Just in case you mess up, you can erase connect on Can Prince Namwon emerged that one down, and if we did this right and closed up all the holes, I can drag my color over here, Phil. Perfect. That's our first there. First, cut out, done. Okay. Or second cut out are gonna be these little areas right here. So that's what we want to cut out. Second, when I make a new layer and I'm gonna change to another color when use yellow, um, new layer. I'm gonna come in and draw this section. And it doesn't matter if I overlap my first section, I will show you how to get rid of that super easy. So you don't have to be very precise on that part. You just close the shapes, you can feel it. Okay, Now I'm going to add the rest of it. So these two guys wanna put in one layer? Now I'm gonna change my color. Teoh Red, make sure I'm on a new layer. That's what I'm doing when I tap that a few times and then make sure I have my model on breast so that I'm gonna come in and create this shape, and it makes it so much easier when we have this base drawing underneath us. Whoa. See, I didn't close my shape. What? See, there's my open. Um, it makes it easier when we have obey strong underneath us. So we can just kind of trace over it. Not worrying about getting it right and goodness for backspace on this thing. Okay, I'm gonna start over on that side. I like to start from here because I have more control instead of ending there. Don't worry. If you mess up a little bank and I go back and change it. All right? If I could just come in, I say I don't like that. You just felt I want to move my black shape to the top and my yellow shape in the middle. Now, I'm gonna do some tweaking before I clear anything out. Because right here, this looks kind of funky, this little yellow bulb in this black bull. But our only life that someone clean those up I'm gonna go to my eraser, Hard airbrushed. I'm just gonna erase. We'll make sure I'm in the right layer in my black layer. I'm gonna go in and I'm going to erase Oh, bulbous area. Make it look like it connects a little bit more cleanly. And then I could do the same in my yellow. Go to my yellow layer. Just erase this area right there. And then I didn't like this little nubbin sticking out there. Okay, that looks noise. Now, super nice. Um, and then we have this area to deal with. Now we have our shapes, but here we have a problem. They're kind of overlapping each other. So to get rid of that, I'm going to go to my top layer and select it and then go to each layer beneath it and clear them out. So do one at a time, clear the yellow. And now that yellow is gone, where the black iss. And then I'm gonna go back and select my black and go into the red layer and top clear, not cleared away where the black is for the rent bullets. They're still read where the yellow is. So I'm gonna go ahead and select the yellow and tap the red layer to clear that out. And now it's there, all in pieces, just like the example I showed you with the paper. This is going to come in so handy when we go to make it look Super three d. So right now it's it looks semi three d just cause of the shape. But the colors are all really flat. So we're gonna add in some shading 5. Adding Texture: All right, so now we have this lovely banner and all these layers, and I'm just going to group those together, and I am going to duplicate that, and I'm gonna flatten it. So this one, I want the separate layers to keep those separate, and I'm gonna turn those off, and then this layer, I want to go ahead and make this entirely white. So it's this nice white background. So anything you do on top of it, you can change the background color, and it won't matter. So I'm just gonna go into the the hue, saturation brightness and turned it up all the way. And now, when I change my background color, you can see this white ribbon now to show you how to create masks. And then I also show you my preference, which is doing the select tool. Just just preference. No. No big reason why. I think it's also cause I use a lot less layers. So one way to do this is to create masks by going in here and selecting one layer, adding a new layer above your white layer and hitting mask. Do that again. Select new layer a mask. Select new layer masks de select everything. This is the fun part having all the fun texture So I'm gonna have a base layer Here's like you quick and easy way just to do like a fun mask So I like using the artistic brushes or fun this oil paint one If I go in and I can change the base layer itself Maybe I want to make it blue Okay, so everything I put on top of it now well, interact with that. So I want my oil paint brush and I'm gonna choose a cool light Reddish color and I can come in and swoop and notice how It's only painting on that one area No change to yellow Maybe put some blue back in simple texture If I took that mask off looking, It's like what? So this mask just takes away the areas that you don't want, and I'm gonna go into this little area here. Maybe I'm gonna go a little darker because this isn't shadow. So I'm gonna put like a base darkness down and then add like a darker red. Teoh it on green yellow. It's kind of on the orangey side, dark yellow just looks like poop. Okay, a little bit here. And I can always add some shading and later. But it's kind of good to get the colors kind of darker to just mimic the light, not hitting them so brightly. And then for this guy, we come into this layer, give you nice and darkish base and maybe lightening up towards the tips. Love this acrylic brush. So today, um, Yep. That's too bright. Mm. Yeah. I'm gonna dole it out a little bit. That's the darker layer. Maybe some brighter corners. I don't know. All right, okay. 6. Adding Shading: Well, this is good. Okay, So before we start shading, I'm gonna talk about the ribbon itself, and I cut this piece of felt out so that you can kind of see shadows with the white. Okay, so we want to get a realistic effect. So we want to create some realistic looking shadows. So when I full this over like this, I get a light surface against the dark surface with the light service against the dark surface, and it does kind of get darker as you go back in space. Okay, so the lightest part's gonna be the top part. Then underneath it's gonna be a little bit darker, but still some light coming through. And then right here, depending on where the light's hitting it. But if it's hitting it from right here, it's gonna get kind of dark right share. So that's what I'm gonna do with this guy. If I do this with masks, I'm just gonna have to create more masks. So instead I'm gonna create another layer here, and then I'm just gonna be using my select tool, which kind of has some go back and forth ness to it. But I can just condense it all down to one layer. So I'm gonna select this one. This is why I want to keep it separate, go into a new layer. Now I campaign in this new layer, and it's only gonna affect everything inside of the park that's been selected Anything that's not been selected, you should see some wavy lines. Let me see if I can see that better with a lighter background. No. So it should. It should be like wavy lines. I'm gonna change to black. And I really love this bonobo jock brush. It's got It's just cool texture, but it also reacts pretty well to the brush and the pressure. I just like how it feels. Things in you could also alternative art alternate e alternatively, use the splatter rush inside of spray paints, which is fun to also get some splatter. And in the flicks sketching bonobo truck. Let's get to it. Okay, so I'm just in the front, which doesn't have a whole lot of shading. So I'm gonna make this really big, and I'm gonna take down my opacity to about 50%. Don't overdo it. And then just kind of brush along the sides where it would naturally like curve over and get a little bit darker. Group I went to Dr Backspace. Well, I still hard now. I'm just gonna go down here to this layer and hit Select Now I thought you're gone, but you still can select it Go back to the layer was in and add had some opacity to that and lower the size a little bit It's only gonna shave in the area that selected pretty cool Somebody goes like my last layer and go back to that layer and shave that too touchy. You know, I was lower the opacity if it starts breaking out on you. Okay. So I don't like how dark it is here. Someone go ahead while it's still selected and go to my sketching brush. Bonobo chalk for my racer Could It just looks good when you erase with the same brush your drawing with you. Raise some of this. Lighten it up. Cool. Right. So half this light, dark, light, dark going on. This texture is good. Um, you could also alternately alternatively, change the blend mode. The blend boat's gonna make it interact with the layers underneath it a little bit differently. I really like to try out the overlay under contrast, because it just darkens the colors and makes him a little bit more vibrant without adding black. So you still get the shaded effects, but you're not seeing the black. So let's look at what it looks like, just normal black. It's still, it's still fun. It's cool, but changes to contrast overlay. And it's just how it's just darker, said Black. Just it's still colorful. I like to add more texture layers. Just, um, so I'm gonna do one more for now and use this shading graphite. I also like that for texture, especially. It just makes it look like I got from Tooth. Um, I'm gonna go back and do this layer by layer again. I'm gonna start at the bottom and work my way up that way. I don't make it too dark, so I'm gonna select out there good Wendy Layer, and then start adding on. Do you wanna do it pretty dark this time? Because I'm Then I'm gonna change the opacity of this layer and get it to where I like it. Select my other layer, go back and darkness, maybe not right there back. So, like the top layer back to that one. Really? Lightly from the middle, dark around the edges. Okay, Now it's starting to look really cool, de select everything. Now I can play around with the capacity on this and maybe about 36. 40%. See how, like it just looks that looking like fabric. So great. Oh, okay. 7. Adding Highlights & Shadow: now here is something to make it pop. Two things we're gonna be creating a highlights, and we're gonna be creating a shadow. So to make the highlight, I am going Teoh, create a new layer above everything else changed toe white. And I'm gonna go over to the clicker few brushes and choose monoline again. And I'm just going to be drawing where the light would be hitting this kind of near the top when you use a pretty stick. So let's go to maybe, like, 50% and right here along the side, maybe some lights hitting this here. Here. I bet there's some light still hitting this guy. All right? Yeah, that's good. That's good for now. Maybe lower this to about 15% and draw a little bit here. Now go to the base layer. That's your base color, your white or whatever color you're choosing. And select that and go back to the highlight layer. Go over here to your wand and select calcium blur. We're gonna drag her pencil across. You can see it's getting blurrier and blurrier. We don't want to see it as a line anymore. We just want to see it as a highlight. And when it starts looking around 20 23 23% 24% Boom. You got something like cool highlights Cool. This is You can go to lighten and say Add now adds the lightness here, put turn that off he selected I'm gonna change the opacity because that's a little too light. But that just gives it some, like sheens and Shine just makes it pop. Makes those places come forward and look like they're catching the light. Now I'm going to go to my base layer, select it, make a new layer and go toe black and just click on the new layer and push Phil, and it gives you another layer that's gonna go below everything else, and I'm gonna lower the opacity to about 25%. I can always change that later, but, um, I want to make this a little bit smaller, make sure your Magnetics on and then drag it down. It's going to create a shadow, but it's I want that toe look like it's further away from the surface that it's over. So I shrunk it, and now I'm going to give it a galaxy and blur to make it look more natural. So awesome. Always makes me getting e make something look pretty awesome. Okay, so that is how you make it look really awesome. Where so, so simple, yet so good. 8. Adding Lettering: Now we can have any text. We want to do this banner and what I'm gonna do is just make a layer above all these banner layers. You can always group this stuff together if you want to you. But what I'm gonna do is just making the layer and you use a contrast in color, if that's why, or black or whatever. And, of course, pick whatever brush you love to work with, I have my go to rush is that I use a lot made by various other people. Um, of course. Karen from iPad. Lettering uses that made this iPad I pl calligraphy brush. It is my go to all the time I use this brush. I just love it. It's so simple, but so five use. Okay, um so here we could just write a word. I was gonna write Banner. And then, of course, now you can, like, move it or do whatever you need to do since it's a zone layer, no damage, your beautiful ribbon. And then, of course, I like to make it pop again. You can duplicate it and change it to black. And that gives that a little bit of dimension. And then, of course, you could give this texture too. Um, of course. Of course. Select. Turn it off. I'm still using white and then back to my favorite sketching texture. Brash, bonobo Chuck, then Okay, thanks. And then, same thing here. Select. Had any layer Turn off that one, and then go to my black. Sure. Yeah, Dude. Okay, so three D banner bam! Done that was faster and easier than I thought it would be. Let me know if you have any questions. I really enjoyed showing you how to make this awesome banner. And this stuff can apply to so many other things. Like whatever you want to draw, just separate out the bits into layers and select shaded in, create lots of cool textures and amazing works of art. And also take time to look at things in real life and see how the light hits it and where the shadows lie and how you can make this look even more awesome. 9.
