Improve Your Drawing Skills with These Tips from a Portrait Artist

Today might be your lucky day! Because today, we're going to learn about portrait drawing with pencils.

Some background: I've drawn thousands of portraits after going to the St. Lucas college in Gent (Belgium). My artistic abilities were at the next level, meaning: Realistic sketches became more important. Since then, I've taught classes in several countries and have earned a side-income by going to fairs and sketching portraits.

Portraits are actually not that hard once you get the gist of it. Your attention to detail and your focus on the right techniques are all that matters, combined with a little practice and some experience. The more you do it, the better you get at it. In this video series, I will show you what you need to pay attention to most. The pitfalls, mistakes, emphasis on certain aspects or facial features... these will all be revealed in a video selection with me as your somewhat humorous narrator/instructor. I will have sped up most of the videos so you won't fall asleep, because I like to get to the point and not waste your time too much. After all, after you see me do it, it's time for you to start your own little project, isn't it?

1. Class introduction: way. 2. Lesson 1 Basic Portrait Tips: Hey, everyone, welcome to this video course on how to draw a portrait. And what portrait's would be better to draw then? My own wife, which I think is one of the most beautiful people in the world. So we're gonna dive into it after some initial tips and 1/2 for you. So take a look at this tip sheets in photo shop that I made eso. Before we start, we're gonna use some great pencils. Okay, so we're just gonna use black and white gray whatever. So 1st 1st tip is to use a dark and lights pencil. Always make sure you have one that's lighter and one that's darker because you want to make sure that this shadows and the shades and stuff on that you just barely conceding are done with an HB pencil or to be pencil or something like that. Three. The pencil B stands for black, right, and H sense will hard. So an HB pencil is hard black and two h is too hard. And if it's hard, it's ah, it's lights. If it's black, be or soft than of course, it's It's more like charcoal. You know, it's all the, um about the amount of lead or the amount of charcoal that's in the pencil. So usually I use in HB and a three B pencil in a previous for thick, dark lines and shadows. And HB is for lighter once number two always create contrast. So, uh, make sure it's not like all one big mush of I've seen people do that. And ah, you really have to make sure that something's stand out and you do that by creating contrast by making some areas really dark and some really lights, and you have to pick and choose which ones Those are number three if you're right handed, just like me start on the left side. So from left to right, just like you're riding. Because if you don't, if you start on the right side, you're in the move to the left. Maybe this is reversing video, But whatever you get the point, then your your hands is going to smudge over that right side and and you know, then then it's gonna be harder to ah, not just much your stuff. So you might want to put it on a piece of paper that could help. But even then the piece of paper is gonna smudge it, so make sure you start on the left side if you're right handed and make sure you start on the right side if you're left handed. Tip number four. Use your finger to smudge or smudged a smooth transition. So basically you're going to draw a lot of lines, right? You can adult hundreds of little lines, but in reality there's a lot of surfaces that aren't lying state. They're smooth, so if you use your finger and you smudge over that a bit, that will make it look like it's glides into the next. A shade of gray. Um, number five. Be very careful with teeth, so teeth. If you must mess up on teeth, like if there's a big gap between him or the line is too thick or if they are too big or if the gums aren't very visible or or you miss up the side or something or the the side of the mouth is down a little bit, then it makes it makes the person not smile as much, or it makes it just just be very careful. Teeth are one of the hardest things of a portrait. So I'm always happier gonna drop porches in public to tell them. Look, uh, it's better if you keep your your mouth closed because it won't take us long, and it will probably turn out better. So then I just draw the lips, which a lot easier in my opinion, Number six create layers of hair. So don't just make some big blur of hair Even though you're in your mind, You think, Oh, it's all the same color, Yes, but there so many shades And so maney so many highlights in their hair that you really need to try toe, um, identify those and then, uh, create different shades of gray in that Keep saying shades of gray like No, I never read the book just telling you I'm not interested in either. Haven't even seen the movie. Okay, Aside from that, we're gonna go back back to drawing shades of gray make the top of the eyes darker than the bottom. So usually if you make the bottom of the I of the eyes ah, darker. It looks like the person is tired. So if you want to draw creepy monster or character, that's what you need to dio, but in most cases, in Portrait's if you want to make somebody look beautiful and actually you can see it, too in the photograph. A lot of times to top the I because of the eyelashes is darker than the bottom number eight . Don't draw a line for the nose bridge. Some people call it lying there. There is no lights. Do you see line here, huh? Do you see one? I don't think so. So there's no line. So if it's not there, don't draw it. Instead, create small fine lines and smudging with your finger to create a shadow. The only reason why you see this dis nose bridge here, like right there is because there's a difference in ah, in how dark it is. Contrast it to the environment around it. So, uh, so don't draw just a line. Okay, that that's cartoony number nine. The shape of the face mad. There's a lot if you mess up the shape, it's a mess. OK, so I always keep adjusting its shape when I do live. Portrait's When I sketched him in like, 20 minutes, that's really important. Number 10 for the initial outlines Okay, so if you want to be all legit or something, you want to be an artist, which I really like. Anybody could be an artist. I mean, uh, but yeah, you could say like, Okay, I'm not gonna cheat. I'm just going to do it, put it right next to it and try to estimate. Okay, so this is what happens if he puts something next to it. You put the portrait on the one side and you put the drawing on the other side. From the time that you look at the portrait, the original photograph to your paper is already like, um, a small second or something or part of the second. And in that fraction of a second, your minds gonna forget a lot of the details, etc. Is gonna get the proportions a little wrong. It's gonna get, you know, it's gonna and even if you keep looking a lot, which you should dio because that's really the key to you. Drawing correctly is to Teoh to view the example a lot. You have to look. Being able to create art is like learning how to see things. Because if you don't see it, you're not gonna draw or if you think you see it or it's like some tricking your mind, but it's not really how it is. In reality, you're gonna draw it differently, so you do need toe look a lot at it. But if you want to get the initial proportions, the outlines rights, you could just put your paper over the photograph paper Ah, against the window. Or you could use the light blocks, which I've done, and you'll see that in the next video I got a light box for $10 or something, and they're very expensive. You can order online, but, yeah, then you could put it over it and you can trace Oh yeah, tracing isn't drawing right, so that's cheating. You can't trace any king. That's what some people said. Actually, I show them that in a book, and I said, Hey, you could trace the outlines, not the whole thing, but just the outlines. Why wouldn't you do the whole thing? Because the details aren't visible on that. You can't really see everything on there. So just getting to outline right? Why not like to me, that's not cheating. To me, that's just being smart. Yeah, that's to me. That's being accurate. Because if you estimate the proportions every time by looking left and then looking right and then left and then drawing it, yeah, you could get it writes. You could get it correctly, and I've done that in the past. But it's just a short cut to trace the main lines on a lightbox or ah, or in a window. Ah, just vertically against. So we know just to get the main outlines. So then you don't get the proportions wrong. If the proportions are wrong, your whole picture is gonna blow. Okay, so, um, just keep them minds. We're going to show that in the next video 11 bring the paper as close to you as possible. Like I said, there is a small moment between you looking at the photograph and you putting your hands on the paper on the pencil on the paper and drawing what you think you saw. Now that's very important, because the for the way it is, the more time that will be between you seeing and you might say, Look, oh, that's a very small time, period, but it matters. This is why a lot of painters. They put their, um, their painting on diesel and they put the example right next to it. The closer you put it to it, they're less time. There will be between you're seeing it and you drawing it. So that's really it's really essential, Teoh getting it all accurate and all as closely to a photograph as you can. So these are my tips. That's was the first video. Not all these videos are going to be an overview with a bunch of, ah, you know, colorful being letters. Did I organize here? They're all gonna be me talking in a corner of the screen and I can do now. But you're going to see me in a sped up way, drawing all these things. And that's gonna be a lot of thought, isn't it? So thanks for watching See you in the next video and let's get started 3. Lesson 2 The Outline: Okay. Thank you for taking the time to go to the next video. We're gonna put this thing on a lightbox, and we're gonna trace it. See, this is what I did. I put the paper on top of the photograph. As you can see, you could see a lot of details in there. You can't see everything. Exactly. I mean, if I was worried to trace every single line of this, it wouldn't turn out very well. So that's the point of what I was starting to say in the last video. You can trace those lines a little bit just to get the proportions right. But as you can see in the hair, for example, right there in the hair. Ah, lot of those layers aren't even visible because they cooked. The paper is covering them. Now, if you have a really good seed through paper, you could trace a lot more. But I'm I'm not really to go that far. You could just put it on a regular printing paper or or a specific artistic paper or something, as you could see. Now the proportions. All right. I'm doing all the lines. Ah, around around the head and ah, around the eyes just to get a basic overview of what it should look like. And, yes, I am in my car because that's the most silent place in a house full of kids where I can record without being interrupted. And it's actually really soundproof. But yeah, as you can see, ah could say that a lot. As you can see and say that all the time. No, uh, minutes raise all these lines and now I have the outline and ah, look at that. No, Put it next to it. There it is. This is the outline. This is what it looks like. That's what I'm going to use to fill in all the shadows and the shades and highlights. And, uh and that is going to be a lot easier. So I'm gonna put it next to it. Now the proportions are correct, and I don't have to worry about it anymore. And like I said, you might call this cheating. But ah, and I just I just put that book on anyth it because I want something that ah, the surface was just easier to draw on. Like because of the Granna granite countertop is not really idealistic for no drawing on top of it. So yeah, this is it. That, uh now it's done, right? No. We're gonna move to the next video, and it's gonna be great. So putting some pieces of paper on anything, it So the cartoons from the book don't. Ah, you can't. You can't see him through the paper beyond all the proportions are right. And I have a basic indication of where all the lines are. And so I hope that was helpful to you. And I'll see you in the next video. 4. Lesson 3 Drawing the hair: Wow. You made it to the third lesson. Your hardcore man. You're going to complete this project, and then you're going to take a photograph and do it at home, and it's gonna be amazing. So in this third lesson, we're gonna show you cause I'm right handed. And I told you, if you're right and it got to start on the left side, we're going to start on left side doing the hair of this beautiful girl who is my wife and ah, yeah, I don't be jealous. I, uh I found her. I found the first, So anyway, so, uh, s it was that what I'm doing here? Look at this. I'm folding the paper because I don't need that side of the paper, which allows me to put the paper the part of this paper, the photograph closer to what I'm drawing. The closer you put it, just fold those little sides that you don't need. Okay, so if I put it right next to it, you can see I'm starting Teoh, um, identify patterns and layers in the hair because, uh, I mean, like, right there, you could see that there's there's some really dark areas in the air, but they're not all dark. And she does have a few highlights in their hair like that. She she put in there in this photograph, but some of it is just purely because of how toe light shines on the hair. So you want to make sure that you don't just start blogging with the three B pencil, take the HB pencil, the lighter one that lights the hard black pencil, which is lighter. And then, ah, start identifying all those those swirls in there. See? And her hair's a little wavy in here. Ah, but even even if you have straight hair, it's still gonna be that way. You're just gonna be highlights because the light hits it from above. And and then, once you're done identifying some of the money moment with that little, little some of the most important main areas, Yeah, I'm gonna keep that in there. I'm not gonna edit this out. Too bad for you, huh? Eso some of those main areas that are darker and you can see addicted three b pencil and I sped it up so you won't get bored. But it's it's neat to see, isn't it? I mean to see, like okay, this areas darker. And then you Ah, you draw this kind of boundary around them. Teoh Teoh, see where where those areas are, and then you fill him in. So let's just watch this. And, uh, then you don't have to listen to me talk anymore. Wow, this guy's good. No, I'm just kidding. I'll keep explaining things, but you could see that, Actually, it's not that complicated. It's Ah Well, it is a complicated. It looks like complex ah, puzzle of hair. But as long as you keep watching the that photograph as your your reference points, you could just take your three b pencil. You don't need toe after and identified all those areas. You could just take your three B B pencil and start filling them in, and you have to make sure that the direction is get to I mean, you can see that since I'm right handed, I go from left to right, so it kind of goes from in a diagonal line from the left bottom corner to the right upper corner and you'll see that anyone who's left handed will go from the right bottom corner to the left upper corner that that's usually how the this style comes to be when you're when you use a certain hand. But in this case, that's ideal, because I know a lot of the hairs moving into that direction. But as you can see, two hair keeps saying that as you can see, uh, I'm trying to use those waves and going along with the direction of the hair because we're not just gonna smudge all of this. We might smudge a few areas just because they're a little blurrier or they're like, just big black areas. But most of it is gonna be lines because these are hairs. And so if you draw lines, it's really gonna look like hair. It's not gonna look like some big blur off. I don't know blob slime or something. It's going to be actual hair because their lines, all kinds of little hairs, so you're gonna use mostly line, so it's gonna be a lot of work. And as you can see, it's a lot of work. I took a very long time to do this. I mean this video 6.5 minutes. But hey, this just sped up so much it really is a long time. But yeah, you could see that the direction of their matter See him trying to go along with that direction. And even when the hair it gets close Teoh, where this skin starts where the skin is visible. I'm still trying to get all these details in, but what you shouldn't do is focus on each little line for, like, five minutes or something, because they you're never gonna get done. I mean, I think it did this portrait and, like I would say, between an hour to two hours, maybe an hour and 1/2 or two hours, probably So And that's because you just identify those main areas. But you don't have to, like, pay attention to every little line. There are some lines that matter more than others. See, some some of these lines, they define the direction or or that particular area in the hair and other ones are just like, you know, Belisle. Just fill them in with my thick three b pencil. Right? So So that's basically what you're doing. Yeah, these guys really good. Now, of course, here here's proof that this is my and sees the same and because I of course this could be or somebody else drawing and then me claiming that was me. But you don't believe that, do you? So, as you can see here, But ah, by this point here, this is very black. And that's because we want this. This angle is curved to stand out to you. I'm using my mouse. No, this Disney to be all in in some kind of shadow area. So even the ones that are a little highlight, it still needs to have this kind of smudge over it so that it's kind of grayish. Does that make sense? I see here I smudged a little bit just to blend it a bit more together. But then I still after I smudge it. I still put some lines over it just to make it look like it's actual hair, like there's lines there. So this video is almost done. You could see that here. I'm starting to shape this area with the hair and ah, this this highlights very important because it really stands out. Another way you can identify those is if you if you kind of squint your eyes so that you can see that if you go like this, this area really stands out, and that's how you can create contrast to if you're not sure of all, if all the details overwhelm you. One way to create contrast is by squinting your eyes and then looking at it, and then you could see the different main areas of it. So that was this video. Let's go to the next. There's a lot more to explain and it's gonna look amazing. 5. Lesson 4 Finishing the hair: Hey, we're onto the next lesson, and we're gonna dive right into it by showing my amazing drawing skills. Yeah, I'm not air gonna at all. No, you could do this to eso. Ah, let's Let's make this bigger. You could see that I'm finishing all the little touches doing the finishing touches on the hair here. And yeah, it really takes a long time. But she has a lot of hair in this picture. Still does well, yeah, In this picture, the hair is a big part of of the portrait. And, ah, it may not be the most important part because some of the details in the face make her look like it's really her. But the hair is going to stand out because it's so contrast it with the rest of the area. It's It's so black and so dark. Like I said, if you squint your eyes, you can you can totally see that big blur of hair, but you still need to try to put all the details in. So yeah, I'm finishing up all these areas amusing. Mostly my three b pencil, which is darker. Ah, in the past, sometimes I've used a four B pencil. It doesn't really matter. That just means that if you use a four b pan pencil, you have to be a little more careful. Ah, and if you use a to B or three B pencil, you have to press it a little harder to make it thicker and blacker. So you know im carefully going around that hearing here. We're gonna get to that in a minute or so. Uh, yeah, Here's all the air goes in All these different waves actually goes, and this is interesting to hear. It waves over here and here. It waves into that direction and see here goes over there and it's just Ah, so it's very wavy in this picture. Very nice. And so I sped it up a lot. Um, cause I don't I don't wanna keep explaining things that aren't really relevant. CEO even skipped a little bit. So we're gonna use that big black, uh, like, ah, pencil the three b pencil to draw in between and around that that shape of the hearing, which is really important because you can erase it if you make a mistake. But the blacker and ah, the more charcoal lead a pencil is, the harder it is to erase it, even if you have a really good racer. So you just have toe be a lot more careful with the three B pencil. But since the hair since in the hair, not every line counts as much as every other one. I mean, if you just mess up one line, it's not gonna make a really big difference most of the time in the hair. So so there. I'm not afraid to use a three b pencil, because if I make a small mistake, it's not gonna matter that much. But with the with the face, I I usually use the HB pencil first and really make sure that I get it right and get the shape right. And this and this shadow Before I used the three B pencil toe at the details. So here, on top of their you know, it's it's getting done, looks very good. Guy has amazing hands of skills, which is me. I don't always talk in the third person, by the way. Actually, I usually don't, but yeah, it's getting done and seeing that not Harris really starting to look like like it is from the picture is still a few light areas that might want to touch up on a little bit, uh, the bottom. Here, you could see that you were the mouse. You could see that it's it's getting finished here with all the black was a lot of black hair and and that is necklace, by the way. That's not That's not like a braid. And at the bottom they were finishing up the hearing and it's Ah, yeah, you have to be really careful. See there I touched it a little bit, and then after you raise it, that's that's a lot harder, so it still kind of touches it a little bit. So please don't mess up on those details and and if you think you are going to mess up, use a light pencil first to define the space or the boundaries where your black needs to be at and then fill it in with that. That black pencil you see to like the ear. The ear is lighter than air, and in this case it really is lighter. What I did, but I'm still gonna put some more shadow on it, and then you could see that once I start doing the neck here, then I start smudging because that's a very smooth transition that was, doesn't have to be lines. It's not hair, so it's not lines. It's It's a smooth transition of a shadow in the skin. So thanks for watching his video, Let's go to the next. 6. Lesson 5 Shading the sleeve: that amazing video of this video course, which is awesome. I'm gonna shade to sleeve. It is only gonna be about 2.5 minutes and so sees the hair is still not done. Still messing around with the hair. Actually, what you should be doing is draw bald person. That would be a lot easier for baby. Babies are pretty easy usually. But then again, you get a baby. Maybe you have some facial features that you really have to be careful toe and to do it right so they look like that particular baby, cause a lot of babies look alike. Okay, So, as you can see, I'm doing the final touches of the hair here. The bags takes a lot of time, and I'm always looking at the left and putting it as closely as possible and really looking at it and just getting all those details done. And then we're gonna do to sleep because that's the title of this video. But we're gonna use an HB pencil for it. Why? Because they're lighter. So and then you can smudge them a little bit like us much three v two. But it's gonna look at a lot darker. So see, first I defined the areas, so it's kind of like a triangle. You triangular area. Ah, and then and then you could see the maybe maybe this disbarred a little bit out of the screen. I apologize for that. But, um, you could see that I'm doing I'm probably doing it right, right. You trust me, right? I'm not faking this, so yeah, so yeah, you draw it, but ah, hb pencil. You make sure there's like white areas, white lines, white strives white areas in between them. And then with your finger, you carefully smudge it and you make sure that you don't smudge over the areas where it's supposed to be. What? And then you don't press so hard on the HB pencil because even HB can be in little dark sometimes. So if you really don't trust yourself with this time, maybe you should get a to H pencil or something that's even lighter. But yeah, basically, just draw all these little lines and really barely touched the paper. That's what you really need to dio just barely touched the paper and then smudge it. So there's a transition. I don't know why this is still recording, but, uh okay, let's move to the next video 7. Lesson 6 First eye and details: Okay, We're gonna draw the eye in this lesson. So the on the left side, which is her right eye, which is our left doesn't matter how. He said so. First a Z could see I'm finishing up some of the details of the hair, the bottom some, that hair that came down and has all these brayed like shapes and ah, yeah, I'm using mostly in a three b pencil. So because I'm not really afraid that I'm gonna mess up because it's hair here. It's okay if you mess up a few lines. I just explained that in the last video, and ah, she may be doing on some music while you watch me draw. It's actually really simple. I mean, ah see here I'm using HB pencil Teoh to create some more shadows on the sleeve, her outfits and to make a smooth transition. See, I'm using my finger to smudge it every once in a while, and, uh, that would make you look better, so yeah, Okay. I don't want to bore us. Oh, let me think of some jokes, I can tell you in meantime, actually, just toe just keep watching. So so this. Ah, this picture is starting to look really good so you could see all the different layers in the hair. You can see the smudging on the in the shadows and the sleeve are looking really good. And so that's all gonna be finished. And it's all within HB pencil. Most of the hair's done with the three B pencil. You have to make it really dark and, uh, here perfecting some of the shapes in that sleeve. So, uh, yeah, it's just a lot of details. You could see that it takes a lot of work. Don't expect it to be done in, like, 20 minutes or something. I mean, my video course get the kind of that length, Maybe, but ah, it's all sped up. So eso yeah, take a look at this. Now, I zoomed in a little bit and ah, so you can have a closer look at the details and I'm using my three b pencil and making sure that it's kind of sharp. You don't want it to be too blocking and then working to start on the left side because if you started right side, you'll smudge the paper. Uh, I don't want explain too much that I already explained before. But as you can see, the eyebrows kind of dark and the top of the eye is really dark. And then the pupil and ah and Iris are pretty dark. But there's always a light in it. You could see that there's like a little light right there seeing and here, too, because that's where the lights, whether that I think this was outside the sun, probably hits the eye. And since the eyes like a like a glass thing, it reflects that. And so it, um, it bounces off that light. So they have to always make sure there's a little light in eyes and no inanimate, a kind of exaggerate that part. So they put like, 55 different lights in there, or even a story shaped lights of something. Um, and then, yeah, I moved your way around the, uh, eye socket because that's where some shadow is and just be really careful with that. See, I'm still using three B pencil, but that's because I did. Most of the The IRA is in the top of the eye and all these dark spots and a little bit of the hair. But when I'm doing ah, the shadows of the eye sockets and stuff then I rather used in HB pencil. It's all about using the right kind of pencil about how hard you press on the paper and which direction used. It says I see here I'm even using nice B pencil for some of the hair because I don't want to be too dark in those areas. So it really depends on where you're drawing. So you can still see that desk is still two lights, but I'm gonna touch upon that later because this here it's not that way. See, And so, yeah, this this whole area right here is kind of dark. So that's that's what filling in here. And then here's some light lines that still move up each other bangs and ah, you just perfected details. Now that this line see this line, that idea over here, and then this goes underneath the eye. But don't make it too dark, because then it'll make a look old or tired. Creepy. Maybe even so, uh, so always be careful with that. Use a light HB pencil for something like this, and as you can see I put the paper really close so I can see it so I could put it right next to it. So the time break between me seeing it and then drawing on paper is not too big before the necklace. Yeah, there's a shadow underneath the necklace. You see that? So it's like a straight, almost straight shadow. The round shapes are barely visible in it. Uh, but yeah, when they just create the shapes of those necklace items the circles, those balls, whatever they update those, you know, the B let's Is that what it's called? That goes my English, By the way, If you didn't know, I'm I'm actually Dutch. So English is my second language. So expect NATO loans like Vincent Van Gogh. Funny Cide Fact. So, as we're watching this process develop is my parents actually named me when they passed a Vincent Van Gogh street on the way to the hospital, and it didn't come up with a name yet and saw the Vincent van Gogh street in the Netherlands. And there'll okay, that's sexually a good name. And funny enough, I turned out to be the only like, um, excited Arthur artists in ah in this family. So as you can see, I use it in HB pencil on the left side here on the cheek because this is where some shadow hits it. And then you've got to imagine that this dis cheek hair is very light because it stands out . That's not a skull ish. Skin is shaped around the skull. So here there's a shadow from that cheek. But year needs to be really lights sees, really here. Oh, it's okay to add all these shadows button here, you got to create a smooth transition. Two words that highlight. That's, like on the cheek where the light hits it. And then the in the shadow underneath the, um, the nose, of course. Very important. This line could be a little darker, as you see me doing over here. That's all possible. But, uh, yeah, we're gonna touch up on that in the next video, so be sure to watch the next video to 8. Lesson 7 Shadows in the Face: in this video, we're gonna talk about a lot more shadows. And as you can see, I'm already starting to use my finger to smudge that cheek because, yeah, it shouldn't look like lines that should. And in here you go around this part C because that's this. This is where there's still highlights, right? There is this little area and then I'm using my pencil Teoh to make this all a little darker That that's how you just start from lights, Teoh, slightly darker to slightly darker. It's a process. You can't be impatient with it. Because if you are and you're gonna just put all these dark areas in there, actually, I think it's better to do a little bit on one side of the face and then a little bit somewhere else. As long as you don't put it all a song, you don't start on the side that your hands is. So if I'm right handed, don't start in right side. I've already mentioned it before, but make sure that you ah, you kind of balance it out. So to just do everything on one side and then to find out only that you have to create the same kind of contrast in the other parts of the face. Actually, I don't like that idea. I kind of like touching up on a little bit of the of the face over here and then a little bit over here and then slowly start working around the mouth with the HB pencil. Of course, because soul lights, it's all very light. What's going to stand out eventually is thes dark corners where you can see inside the mouth, and also this is a little darker Toso. I'm touching upon that. Always make sure that the upper lip is a little darker than the bottom lip. Now, in this case, that's actually true. You can see that in the photograph, but in a lot of cases, if you can't really see it, it's always better to make the upper lip look a little darker. It's just a trick I use. Sometimes. I, uh, sometimes you do that when I do live. Portrait's. When they sit imposed for 20 minutes, especially then it's already makes it look Baylor immediately if you do that. So that's just a little trick. Of course you need. If you do a photograph, you really need to look at, if that's how it is. But it is. You can see I'm starting to do the right side here and you might be saying like Well, that's stupid because then you could smudge over it, right? But it's It's actually really close to here. I can still put my hand over there and they're not so dark. So that's another thing is, uh, this hair that these lines and I do They're not so dark. So even if I put my hand on it, it's not gonna smudge that much. So there's some shadow underneath the underneath the chin in the neck area. It's all very smooth. So no, see, I'm just touching up on a little bit. But then I smudge it immediately afterwards, and I don't want the directions. He Sometimes the direction goes like like this because I don't want it. See, you could see that I'm not going from the left bottom corner to the upper right corner. In that case, I'm actually going along with the direction of the of the shape of the face. Now, the mouth, Yeah, that that's gonna be a challenge, you know, I'm using on HB pencil Teoh, Let's make those corners of the mouth of the dark. This is what you should do too, if you're not confident, if you're gonna do it right with shape because it would be really careful with that, I'd like I said, the teeth is very, very important. So So, if you're not really confident, maybe market about put the boundaries on there, Where you gonna color it in? Where you gonna fill it all in first with an HB pencil, like I'm doing now on the right side. And then take a three b pencil, then take a darker pencil and go like, OK, now, Now I could feel that. And now I know where to stop where the Linus So, yeah, the top of the the upper lip is going to be a little darker now. I'm starting on the right eye, right? I need to be smaller than the left eye because it's farther away from us. And since we, uh, we did the outline, we already have this shape, so that's gonna be 100% accurate. But then you just need to feel feeling the shadow, so there needs to be like the little shadow underneath the eye. See those bags? It's okay if they're they're a little bit. Just don't make it too dark. Unless you want the maker look tired, right? Then used a dark pencil. Then I'm so now I just compared him like I might have to touch up in a little bit on the the other I to. So I take the dark pencil and you could see that I think she has some makeup on in this picture. And so did, uh, the lines around the eye. You probably use some eyeliner for that. Those are a little darker, too. Always make sure you leave open that little white spots so that that's what a light hits it . Right? So this eyes almost done. It's a few more details that we can add and then it needs to go up. Teoh. You know there's some more shadows. Very subtle shadows to go up to where the eyebrow no eyebrows are a little dark there, darker in mine. And so, uh, you can use maybe pencil for it. You can use it in three B pencil, but then you don't don't press so hard on the paper. You gotta be careful with that. So I'm finishing up a little bit of that hair of the hearing. I'm really just trying to avoid doing the mouse. He could tell that I don't really like doing the teeth. I mean, the mouth. Okay, That's okay, right? The teeth is always the hardest part, and and I'm always like, Ah, l just save it for later. So I do all the fun stuff first. But, you know, eventually you got to get around to it. And so look at this shadow on on the nose. Here, Right there. See? So don't forget that. And be careful, cause if you just draw a line is gonna look dumb. It's going look really weird. So you want to make sure that it's all smooth. It's all a shadow T here. I'm starting to finally put some of the shapes of the teeth in with a very light pencil. Please use a very light pencil, HB. Okay, but maybe even lightning that because you don't want to mess up the teeth. If anything, there's anything you take away from. These lessons don't measure. You shouldn't buy myself anything else either, But I mean, that's is one of the hardest parts in my opinion. Now, if you disagree with me, sure put a common at the bottom of thes videos or whatever and tell me new You're wrong, Vincent. The teeth are actually the easiest part. Urine idiots. Fine. Then I digress. I will take it all back. I'll just needed to the fact that I'm just not good at drawing this guy is which might actually be me. Okay, so you see that taken HB pencil fordo hair on the right side. And for those those wrinkles around the mouth, huh? These things that go up when you smile. Very important to be to start out lightly because he started out dark. The more you emphasize those the older they look. And since she's only 25 years old, yes, he's only 25 at this moment, and she shouldn't look too old. So Okay, remember that. And I'll see you in the next video. You in in this video, we're gonna do the teeth, even though it is really the hardest part. So first I'm gonna still trying to avoid it. So you creating this shadow here because the chin is kind of round right, and her chin doesn't stand out that much, But you could still see kind of around ship shape. So here you tryingto create that round feeling, but by drawing around it with a light pencil creating shadow and then using your finger to smudge it around it just trying to make the transition not to, Ah, obvious. Because, like I said, her chin doesn't stand out as much. Now her sister's chin stands out a bit more. I've seen her sister and her gin is a lot stronger. So that were to draw her. Yeah, I would. I would smooth it out even more, and I create more content contrast. And let me let me make this bigger for you. That doesn't bother you, right? So So, yeah, it depends on the person. Um, and then I use the side of the eraser. As you see that doesn't have any stuff. Sent any pencil on it because I don't want to smudge it just wanted to get rid of a little bit of shadow. So yeah, it's it's really not like, first you do, I Then you do the molding doing knows you really just, uh, touch up on things a little bit here and there. And then you compare and you look at the image and you go like, OK, this is where it still needs a bit more shadow. This is where it needs to be darker. This was where I need to smoothing it out a bit more. And so you kind of do the whole drawing all at once, and that's the way I like to do it. Now, you don't have to do it that way. But if I do it that way, then I could go from light to dark, and I can gradually create mawr, um, three d effects into the picture like I don't have to like, ah, treat all these things a separate elements. They work together, they're all part of her face. So they all kind of create the face together. Now what? I'm gonna explain about the teeth. Make sure that the guns are big enough so you. Sometimes I do teeth, and then the teeth were waiting. Long see, in this case, they're coming along, too. So we have to make sure that the that the dark underneath the teeth is big enough to give us two big done. It was just gonna have really big upper teeth. But it needs to be big enough that it's just very detailed. Needs to be big enough that the teeth don't appears too long. It's a teeth appear very long, very long, gated, narrow. Then it looks like she just has really goofy teeth, you know, goofy right from Disney. Can I mention that without being sued for copyright infringement? Okay, so so goofy has really long front teeth. So here I'm zooming in even more. Sorry. I'm covering up a little bit here with my hand, but and even using an eraser. But because because I think I might have missed up that gum a little bit. And even the eraser, it puts a little bit of a shadow on there, which I didn't really like. It's not a big deal. So you have to be really careful of these teeth. See, I'm really trying to not smudge it at all. And don't use a three b pencil. Except for that the corners of the mouth, please. Or it may be subtle. Lying's underneath the teeth. But now that guns need to be all done by a light pencil and you need to try to get shape, right and the shadow see the show that they're the shadow in the in the other. Most corners of the mouth is really cried. It's really dark, but, ah, it doesn't just go from black to white. It gradually, like there's a little bit of shadow still on the teeth in the corner, and the teeth in the far corner have more shadowed in a second for their steeped in the corner. You know what I mean? So you need toe, make that stand out, too. So, yeah, those lines need to be there, but make them really thin. Many lights can always make him darker. It's harder to make in lighter. You don't wanna mess up like I did with the eraser, and then find out like, Oh, now I can't change anymore and then throw the whole picture away. Could you do? You just did all that hair and hold the other elements of that face. So you don't want to do that so you could see that I'm putting a little bit of shadow in the far side of the teeth really important. I didn't even speed it up that much anymore, seeing I slowed down for you because it's such an important part of this picture. So that's what makes it a video a little longer. But then at least you see it in slow motion, baby, let's see. It actually is not in slow motion. It's the exact speed that I was drawing in at. Yeah, there we go. There's the mouth. Pretty similar home, pretty accurate. So let's go to the next video and finish up this thing. 10. Lesson 9 Facial shading and smudging: Okay, We're finally done with that really hard face of the teeth. Yeah, you can see I'm still kind of working on it. Just touching up a few lines here and there. Uh, upper lip, maybe a little darker, decided mild. May make it stand out more because you don't want these teeth to stand out a separate teeth . You wanted to be like this old thing of teeth. So you really don't want those lines to stand out a lot, Okay? Because that makes it look goofy. So the dark, the dark sides of the of the corner of the mouth me to stand out in contrast a lot with the teeth with the totality of all the teeth. So so that if you squint your eyes a little bit, you don't see all those big, fat lines that separate the teeth. You don't want that. Okay, so here you could see that. I'm just doing a little touch ups. I'm looking at it, going like Okay, you know what? This could use a bit more shadow. This, uh, this hair could be a little darker. And that's what you need to be doing. Just constantly look at it. Sometimes it might even be good to walk away from your drawing and to come back an hour later or a day later and just to look at and go like, Ah, you know, I was so into it that I didn't see that, but then, at first glance, we see it just immediately it stands out, and sometimes you don't see it if you're in the process, if you're working in all those details, so that's another small tip from me. If if you're insecure about whether you're doing it all perfectly, go away over or have somebody else come look at it and then they might point something out and then be open to criticism. Don't don't have big ego, right? Don't have a big eagle like me. And then and then ask him about their opinion and they might see something immediately that you overlooked. That's something else. So this is a very short video just to touch ups. You could see that just adding some shadows and ah, no, every complicated. I just want to make sure that the contrast is there between hair and the dark eyes and the corners of the mouth. Uh, and then contrast it with the shadows in the face here. Okay, so let's go to the next video. Let's finish this up. 11. Lesson 10 The clothes and wrinkles: Okay. As you can see, this one video is in my office because my last wife lived with the car and I have to redo this video because for some reason, I lost file. So I'm finishing up the hair on the right side. And as you could see him finishing up there, hearing over there to guys like these little dots in them like this little I don't know what you should call them, but there's some details in them. And now I feel safe. Teoh, add a lot of black and dark to the hair on the right side because now all the rest is done already. So now we're adding some details to the shirt, see? And the necklace is almost ready. Jill and I see all these states, all these all these details. These are fun parts because you really don't have Teoh. There is just something on the screen. You really don't have Teoh um make everything perfect because if if you miss a dot on even on the shirt or something else Yeah, that's fine, like and some arts might seem a while then you're not accurate enough and it's not completely realistic. And it's not the same. But seriously, guys, would you rather spend a lot of time on things like this? Or would you just rather just spend a lot of time on the face? Oh, both. Yeah. No, no, no. The face matters most, and especially if you're gonna tall portrait from someone else, they're really not gonna care about all these stupid little details that are not in face. Because what they care about most is that it will look like the person that's supposed to look like, which is right in this case, it's it's working. It looks like her. Right? So, yeah, all these details do add something, and you do need to spend some time on them. But you don't have to be a big perfectionist about it. It's really just fluff that fills in the rest. Ah, and that just, ah, helps you, Ah, make the picture stand out and make makes a bit more realistic. See? So writing all these little details with the black that three b pencil because they are really dark and when it helps, What makes this image better is that the dark in the necklace and the shirt make the neck area and the delight shirt in the face of stuff. Stand out more because these the spots stand out today. So there's so dark that they make the white standout. Does that make sense? I think it does anyway, So, yeah, we're adding all these little details and you could take some time to do. As you can see, I sped it up a nine. I spent some time to it, too, and literally just turned on some music and turn off your thoughts and just look at the picture and just kind of how fill in the blanks. That's really what it is. I mean, your teacher probably taught you to color in between the lines when you were little. That's really what you're doing. So, uh, yeah, you're adding some more lines because that's what their undershirt looks like. And sometimes, yeah, I just see a little thing. He in the face and I'm like, I want to touch upon that. So then I do that. It looks like I'm really fast at it here. The axel spin up and then for yeah, that part of shirt needs a three B pencil because it's really dark. So They press really hard in those dark areas, and these still use a three B pencil in the areas that art as shadowy and dark. But there's still, you know, dark enough that the color of the shirt still makes it pretty dark. I mean, that's just a color. His shirt, as you can see here, it all these little dots on these little circle areas. I'm not gonna spend my life perfecting them. I don't think that's very necessary. Unless you're getting paid $1000 for this portrait, then, yeah, I'd probably spend a few more hours getting it exactly right. But I don't. So Ah, manage most. It's really just a face and stuff. So we're gonna continue in the next video with this one that I already did before I lost this song. And thanks for watching CNN. Excellent. 12. Lesson 11 The final touches: Congratulations. You made it to the final drawing video of this class or course or whatever you wanna call it. And so, uh, wouldn't move here, get that miles out of the way. So here, we're going to do the necklace. And those details really add to all the rest because they contrast with the neck area. So, uh, because they're dark and stuff. And so, yeah, we're just gonna touch that up with a three b pencil because they're so dark. And then by the time that is done, then portrait is almost done, and then the next lesson will review some of these things. Oh, stuff that you learned all the great tips that was going to make you a portrait, millionaire. No, that's not gonna happen. Okay? Please don't quote me on that. Hey, I actually I actually made hundreds. I think I'd make thousands of dollars just going to fairs and all unfortunates or just doing side assignments the people ordered online. So there is a way to make money with it. But you know, this, of course, is these lessons aren't about money. And so here's my signature that Ah, here's the final portrait. Totally looks like are totally looks like the photograph. Really nice contrast here between the black areas of the hair and then ah, OK, move the mouse. And then those there's, ah, shadows in the sleeves and the neck and in the face makes it all really nice picture. So I hope you learned a lot from this. Let's go to the next lesson. Lesson 12 Recap: okay, I said, I know this is a the exact same screen as you saw in the beginning of the lesson, but I just wanted you to realize that these air really the elements off. These are the main tips you should keep in mind when you're drawing a portrait, Always create contrast. Use these two pencils. Make sure if you're right handed you start on the left side. Use your finger to smudge, so make sure that you know the areas have to be smooth, not the hair. That's much to hear too much because there's a line. So the hairs I ah, the very careful its teeth of put a whole lesson in there on teeth and you could see how how careful I was with those, um created layers of the hair makes the top of the eyes darker than the bottom. In her case, she has brown eyes, so her eyes or even darker. But even with people blue eyes like me, that's still usually the top is darker. Don't draw a line for the notion. Make nice shapes over here, too. The shape of the face matters a lot, So, uh, yeah, use those outlines and yeah, if you don't want to put it against the window where you don't have a light box you could totally estimate out is. But I recommend you do that anyway, because then you get the proportions right, and then put the paper is close to you as possible. I hope you learned a lot. I thought it was a lot of fun to do this.
