Project Description

Create a flourished, vectorized calligraphic logotype

ASSIGNMENT

Your assignment is to create a flourished, vectorized calligraphic logotype. Just as you see demonstrated in the video lessons, you'll select a word or phrase, sketch it with flourishes, ink it (using calligraphy tools or, if you're a beginner, a felt-tip pen in calligraphic style), and then digitize it by scanning, polishing in Photoshop, and vectorizing the final designs in Illustrator.

In recent years calligraphers have felt an increased demand for two unique skills: modern flourishes that are elegant (without looking like they came out of the eighteenth century) and digitized calligraphy that can be used in print and online in the form of logotypes, advertising, title treatments, printed stationery, and beyond. This project helps you practice and master both of these in-demand skills.

DELIVERABLE

The final product of this class will be a flourished, vectorized logotype that retains all the subtleties of the actual inked version, and can be hard to distinguish from the pixel-based version, even when enlarged! This design can then be recolored easily, printed at any size, and applied to rubber stamp designs, letterpress plates, packaging, clothing...the sky's the limit!
