About This Class

In this video series, I share my process in how I create a photo real illustration based off of a photo reference. This is an exercise that strengthens your ability to create depth and realism in other projects. I like to use the analogy that it is very much like a musician prating scales to be able to perform better when playing actual songs. Or, an athlete training and doing conditioning exercises to compete. My experience is that when I do these photo realism exercises, it strengthens my ability to create my own images form the mind, as I retain a lot of what I observe in real images.

This first video series was created a few years ago, and it was my first narrated tutorial. I am currently producing even more up to date videos with more info and techniques. Please reach out to me with any questions and comments of what you would like to see in the new materials!

Hello, I'm Chris Scalf.

I am a professional illustrator/animator working mostly in the commercial art industry. I have also done some published work in comics industry and science fiction and fantasy books. A lot of my followers previously knew me as CGSBGS on youtube, where I showcased a lot of dragon speed paint videos in the mid 2000's. I will be adding a lot of different videos and tutorials on here, anywhere from traditional medium to digital, and animation/3D. Please feel free to...
