1. Presentation of the course: hi and welcome to the scores. My name is Mauricio Angeles and, um, a digital and traditional artists working in London. I created this course to teach you how to paint and blending for shopping procreate. So if you want to learn digital painting and become a professional artist, this is the course for you. I chosen a nor masterpiece to teach you how to paint them blend because art from the past is an immense source of inspiration, and it's definitely the right place to begin our journey. I have a background in traditional oil. Painting and drawing have been commissioned to do lots of portrait further years. Then I've taken my knowledge to the digital world, becoming a scientific it of strata and Freddie modeler working in the UK for the effects companies in the advertisement and fin industry. So let's have a look at what this course is about. In the first part of the course, you learn the basics and understand the differences between the two software's Don't worry . If you are complete beginner, I will get you through every fools that we're going to use. We start our painting from scratch, showing you how to make the initial drawing and also create an all looking back that you can both download. Then I'll get you through the painting and blending process, and you discover that it's not about the brush or the software you use, but more about the way you approach painting. You will learn out of pain the figure, understand volumes and shading and explore the brush settings to achieve a nice and smooth surface, which is the most challenging aspect of digital painting. Well, let's explore a variety of skin colors, and you will be able to download the collection of 20 skin types to use for your own projects. Last night, we create the background, walk through some color adjustment, and I played pictures to the surface to simulate different kinds of materials. It might seem like a lot, but don't worry. We're going to learn, then die. Process that by step, and we're going to keep it simple and consistent. By the end of the course, you would be able to create art that will give your sense of pride, the paint, a news about to be awakened. So let's get started. Uh, 2. Software and Tools: the computing amusing is a Nymex 27 inches connected to a walk, Um, induced three. They both a little bit dated. Maybe from 2013 I would say, but they still work just fine. I also work with the knife had brought 12 inches on a stand using the EPA pencil fast generation. It doesn't really matter if you are on a Mac or PC or is basically a centuries a tablet, as I couldn't imagine anyone painting with the mouse or truck. But to be honest, so if you want to invest the money, I would go for Penn Tablet. In terms of software, I'm only used father shop Sisi on the I make and procreate on the iPod. As you'll see later on. I also used Illustrator, which comes handy where we want to create our color palette. But there are other alternatives, and it's no essential. I don't use any fancy play gains or any important brash or run any sort of script. Just blame basic tools that count with software, so any version of fraud a shop appropriate are going to be just fine. My work flow is to generally drawing painting to procreate and then I send them to for a shop where I do all the blending. You can clearly decided to use entirely procreate or for a shop as the principal is basically the same. So it's a matter off personal choice. In the next lesson, we're going to discover who Hensel buying the younger Waas in briefly studies body off work , in particular the ambassador painting. 3. Studying the art of Hans Holbein the Younger: in this course, we're going to examine and replicate a portion off a very big and important painting called the Ambassadors Made but the very famous German artist hence open the younger hence Holbein . The Younger was born in UPS Burke, near Munich, towards the beginning off the 16th century, but apparently spent the majority of his life in England under the rain off Henry the eighth. He has been probably the most important and Regis portrait artist off that period in the entire northern Europe and was also incredibly talented. Draftsman M printmaker he is called the younger as his father was School hence will bind the elder, and he was a painter as well. Who bind style is Northern Renee, since which is basically the Rene since they occurred in the Northern Europe. For many famous artist for Northern Europe, like the superb for Nike Jab on the White and Hans Memling and the amazingly gifted and talented are Beth Duda during his career and so being the younger producer Syriza fantastic portrays, they became also cultural Aikens like the portrait of Henry, the Eighth Erasmus and said Thomas more and all of them had a crucial role in the life of the artist. So let's talk about the ambassador's painting. This painting is a life size, life scale. Double portray off two eminent people represented at full length. It is probably the most complex painting the artist has ever created. The men on the left is the French ambassador to London. You shown the Dante View, and it would be the subject of our painting. If we take a look at him we can admire is amazing outfit. What is wearing It's simply a standing the rex aiding fabric, the for the long, black pompous stress. Ho Bynes is showing off his incredible talent in depicting all of these details. The men on the right is the bishop off Lover George the self. At first glance, you, my friend A, has a simpler and more sober dress than his friend by fully closely. We see they wears a fair line. Rob made off damask silk, and he must have been very expensive for the time to have such an outfit. But the real subjects here are the many objects on this tour table. They split into two shelves. In the top part, there are objects related to the planets, the stars, the sun. And it's also glug with the constellation as well as different sort of instruments, like a chef for Sandia or a quadrant and the lower shelf. Would you see a globe that doesn't represent the sky this time? But the there's an open live from him book. And there's also an instrument, a lute with a broken string and this part represent the earth, everything in this painting as a subtle meaning and hidden symbolism. There are some literature about this painting, and many theories have been made. Some historians believe they might represent the conflict between the state and the church . Some others believe you represent the end of the christened in England, as in 15 33 every the eighth was going to marry and Bullen off that the annulment from Catherine of Aragon, renouncing papal authority and creating the break wrong for sure. The most notable symbol off this painting is the animal fix car we see at the bottom off the picture to see undistorted. The painting must be seen from high on the right side or low on the left side. It's unclear why whole bite wanted to include this car in such a peculiar way and also unclear is the meaning associated with it. If he happens there, you are in London because you live there. You visit this easy. You can see this painting in person at the National Gallery in Travel Square, where you go also my many other magnificent pieces. So there was a brief history of this majestic painting. In the next lesson, we're going to set up our campus and start this journey together. 4. Setting up the canvas: to open a document, you can double click on the background. Do five open once the images aerbin, you can see a percentage on above the document. These image is displayed at 4% off the actual size. And in order to see the real resolution off this painting gifted two men until you get 200% . So when you get 200% you can see that this image is actually huge. We're going to concentrate on this subject, mainly focusing on space and a bit on his clothes and accessorize. It would take an enormous amount of time to replicate the entire painting. But I'm confident that if you understand the way I approached paying the face, the same principle and technique can be applied to anything else to create a new document. You can do fi new. We want to set up the canvas to be in a four a 300 d p. I and then you press OK if we now oppress em with which to the selection toe and to make a rectangular selection, you have to click and drug. If you now press v you speech from selection toe the move toe you then drag and drop from the reference into the new document, you can see that there's a difference in size and they images, in fact, bigger than the actual cameras, so we need to make it smaller. If you zoom out, we can see the blue background around document. If we now press common tea or control, T were able to transform the image by pressing shift and drugging because strain the proportions we keep on adjusting the images we like. In this case, I'm trying to frame Jean to be kind of centered, and it's very important to have a pleasant composition book. What scale and size are harmoniously balanced? You don't press enter, but we have done. Once this is done, you can close the main reference document. If we press now. Common are the ruler appears. You can set up the units to be in centimetres or in inches or in any other for months by clicking added preferences, units and rulers. Would that make sure that's not two guides? Option is checked by doing view. Step two guides. What do you mean? Until we get to the top corner off the artwork to create a guide, you have to click and drug and then release. If you press shift, the guides would be snapped the ruler. After that, we want to create a vertical guide. So we do the same. We flick and drug pressing shift and then we release to create a new guide. We can now create a new layer. We can do that using the iPhone at the bottom of the lion pallets at this point with which to the line tour, setting it to pixels and wade toe one with the line to selected. We draw a line, and immediately after we click, we press shift to make the light straight was reaching out to the move tool by pressing V, and we moved the line up towards the guide. You will not, is there as soon as you reach the guide the line with snap to it, then you are just aligned by using the arrow keys on your keyboard to change the background . You can press F at this point, we need to create more guidelines, so you will have to do the same thing that we did before having the layer with the line selected. We practice Veit is which to the move toe, and then we click and drag anyway in the campus with the old keep rest the old key with copy anything there is on the layer onto another layer. Now we can continue creating the guides after negative is to use the greed we can share degreed by clicking view show agreed. And again, you can change the degree set things using the preferences as well as to the guys. You can snap to the green, old, so to hide and showed, agreed or the guidelines. You can press common age or control age, which will hide also this election. Eventually, if days one with the top players selected, you press common e control. He emerged down the layer repressed old and drug to copy the layer. And then we moved the new lines down until this snapped. Agreed, and we always need to adjust a bit with the arrow keys. You must down again and again that just the new lines and you merge down once again and moved the lines. If you want, you can also go by the I. You don't necessarily have to use the guidelines at all. If you don't want. We do these until the bottom of the artwork. We can now match them down. You select the top layer and press common E until they emerged. We're going to copy this layer by pressing common J that would transform the layer by pressing common T. And if we move outside the image, the tool gives the ability to retain the layer. So we start rotating the image, and then we press shift to force the layer to move by a fixed degree. Now we're going to stretch this layer by pulling the handle in the middle of the image with the old he pressed, who want to stretch it outside the artwork we practice intact to confirm the changes, you can know merge down the lay. It just created pressing common E. We practice see, and we make a selection is because the image you're not, instead that always snuck to the corners. Once the artwork is all selected, you press enter this function, crops everything out the composition. At this point, we want to add a couple of centimetres around the image, and we can do that by clicking image, commerce eyes. Yeah, we said the document to be 23 by 52 centimeters, and we press OK. We create another layer and we select the brush door. You then select one of the brushes from the palate, and I recommend a solid airbrush. Or what are the pencils or you want to do now is to assigned which column Elektra and Wheat wrote a number, or vice versa. Basically, lacking about the ship game we can now renamed the Layers to have them nice and tidy is again gets quite confusing when there are a lot of them named. We do to get the document by doing image duplicate. You select the reference layer, click command control on the family, and he creates a selection. Then you create a new layer. You change the foreground color to bray. You hide the reference. Then you feel this election with a foreground color by doing edit field and make sure foreground color is set as the option and then press OK, this is going to be your campus. You can change the color off the great to be black by pressing common, I control I or image adjustment invert. You can also increase the capacity off the Greek layer by adjusting this lighter as you wish, and it's good to do the same for the reference document to keep it consistent after all of the's, we are now ready to make the drawing. 5. Creating an Old Paper Background: when I finish a drawing in the British start painting, I normally prefer a neutral background than a white background painting on why it's not something alike and more in general is not the advised, as he might be difficult to understand and manage the brighter dogs. I also do the same when I paint traditionally always killed the white campus with some kind of brownish or bluish color for this project. I thought it was fun to use an old paper background as I wanted to keep the same mood with the old painting we're making. I have a good collection of all paper, and, as you can see here, they all have some nice and interesting features, like dumb stains, scratches, different sort of marks and anxious from the paper itself. I got them from a digital or my library co era, and I'm now going to show you where exactly and how I got them. If you connect to e dashed rara dot c age, you can see a home page similar to what you see on my screen. The ive ever a platform is an immense source of all books, mainly Britain, Switzerland that have been scan and Putin line. If you are no books lover, that's your place. You can basically discover the collection yourself in choose depend. But you like most. For example, if you type bluebell here, that would be banned in results. If you select this one, which is an architectural course, and then click on farm Nails, you can see that the first pages off the book are empty, as you might expect. Then, going forward, there will be a number of empty pages, maybe in some of them being all the image printed behind come through where you can see that some of the pages are being wavy. If you go now towards the end of the book again, you can find a set of anti pages. Let's strikes a select page 5 to 6. As you can see, this is a nice paper. If we now go back to the volume main page, you can see that you can download the book in PdF for free. Please take some moments to go through the terms off. Use as that some restrictions depending on the usage, so you download the book depending on the size and number of pages. Some downloads can be pretty big. This one is about 250 minutes. So if you have a fast broadband connection, shouldn't be too long. Once the download is complete, you can appreciate that has a pretty good resolution. Now we launch for a shop and open the pdf just unloaded in the family ALS. You can see the empty pages we want with which to media box. We select them pressing shift will out multiple selection and click OK, if you do mean you can see the details off the paper, you might like some off them or not, this one in particular. I don't think it's suitable for what we need. Obviously, you can mix and match them by selecting all the document with common A and then Kobe and paste into another document. You can decrease the opacity and maybe cycled through the modes here and see which one you like most, right? We can close them, So this paper is the result off. Three old pages basically play around until I got something I liked. If I switch from multiply too normal, you can see the original papers. Then I match down the layers and get defender background. You can download this paper as part of the material for this course 6. Exploring 3 Drawing Methods: we are in procreate. We have agreed, agreed over the reference and the reference. We want to create a new layer and choose a pencil. We can choose an HB pencil. Then we want to assign numbers and letters as we did in the previous chapter. The principal off this method is to use, agreed as a reference as a helper for making a precise drawing where measurements and proportions are correct. This is an excellent, an easy way to learn how to draw. You need to focus on one square at a time without paying attention, or get overwhelmed by the entire composition, like in a battleship. If we see these ever here, we can see that it sits between B and five. So we go to our agreed and we identify the same spot where we get roughly here. Then if we go along this line, we see that it does intersect. Agreed at this point just in the middle of the vertical line so we can do the same. We draw a line this roughly off way, then you go straight to the corner, straight to the corner. Then he goes adjacent to the guide and then he goes back down. Now we do this line and he starts from the corner and he goes up. Then you can spot this little corner there and we tried to replicate that again. He goes all the way up near at this point and we connect the two points bearing in mind the Linus curving. Now we're going to draw this line going down. So we set a couple of points here and roughly here, which is this bit we can see. The other end is about there, and we can basically join the two points, allowing some curvature. And there's also this line days going down to be near the corner and it gets into F four. We can now join this line and this line and now the eyebrows starting roughly at a B 23 We're not going to draw hair by hair, but more than type mass. This is a general rule for drawing or painting the hair. So we don't go into details at this stage, but we try to block out the highbrow. If it was a solid element, we want to make a general shape. Then we have this shadow line which ago. Secular. It's a four and he goes up meeting the other end. Then we have to tear duct, which is about there, and he goes straight and round. Now we have this point, which is days we have that boy which is roughly on the same line, this point, which is between the two lines and it's about there and then we have this point which is here. So now we enjoy in the points, always having a look at the reference and trying to follow the curvature off the I. So from this corner, we go up to meet the other lines. Now we draw the lower eyelids. We have a point there for the and we join this lines. This line here is mainly formed by light and shadows and generally is not a sharp feature off the face. So as you can see, you can perceive the volume off it. But it's not as defined as the apple eat. And now the most important part, which is the iris again saying thing, This point there, it's roughly there. Then we try to make circle following the reference, and the iris never really a perfect secret, is always a big irregular. Now the people, which is the black spot in the middle of the eye, is actually a gap rather than a spot. We can not see much from the reference, but it doesn't matter. We know that it's basically a circle were drawn out. The highlights as being the ice surface wet there would be always catching some reflections just under the APA. Highly, we have a dark area which is a mix from shadows in eyelashes. For the time being, we can draw an approximate shape and then describe some eyelashes when they are a bit more visible. We define some volume. There we go back to the eyebrow. We describe the volume. Now we define the face and we trying to identify the intersection first and then joined the points. So this corner this days, these this attendees and we can now join them. Okay, so I think as a demonstration that could be enough. This method is quite straightforward and we practice you would master this technique. Now we're going to examine the free hand technique which requires more drawing ability as well as observation skills, and you normally gained them with experience the principle is basically the same. We want to identify a spot and then always relay toe what we draw in compared with the reference so we can start from the tear that defined the appellate margin, then draw the appellate volume shape. Obviously, these can be tricky if you are the beginning, but it's definitely a good exercise and very rewarding. The way you draw is constantly changing over time. Every single time you approach a drawing or painting, you can see an improvement as well as before. We want to define the mass of the eyebrow rather than getting into the leaders at this stage going back to the tear duct. And then we draw the iris, the people, the highlights and the lower margin off the eyelids. I'll be of shadows and then the margin again in some eyelashes. Compared to the great method, the Freehand drawing is more character is most stylish. If I can say that, and this is because you basically need to investigate what's going on and you do that by making lines over lines, you go back and forth until you get that specific curve. It's a bit of a struggle and you can perceive that sort of anxiety within the lines. It's like that line is to be not just a line, but a line that moves that has different ways along itself. So it's light or one spot, but dark and heavy with extension shadow. Now, the first method tracing these method consists in having the reference set to a low opacity underneath em, basically drawing on top. So you duplicate the reference. You move in next to it and you decrease your capacity. Then you create another layer and choose your prefer pencil, which in my case, is always the technical pensar and you start tracing very easy, very straightforward, no struggle whatsoever. We trays all the elements we see underneath. So we do the upper I late. We describe the eyebrows we do that I always we do the black spot, the highlights them. We describe the the lower margin off the eyelid. This is a method I don't recommend if you are a beginner and you want to learn out draw as in fact, you won't learn much this way. I have a if you want to focus on the painting on Lee, and you don't want to spend a few hours making the drawing. You can use this method, but very mind. This can be addictive and easy. Obviously, this drawing is going to be very precise and correct in terms off proportions compared to the others. So to summarize, we back him for the shop. Now we've got the reference here. Them we have degree method drawing the free hand and the tracing. They are all very similar to each other. The most precise is probably the tracing or degree drawing. Why the free hand is more lose, but with more character compared to the other two. Now that we explored, three different methods were going to do the drawing in the next lesson. 7. Making the Drawing: in this lecture, I'm going to make the drawing using the great methods. As you can see here, there is the reference on the left inside and the drawing on the right. I made the drawing using procreate on iPod, but I display the reference on my Mac screen for my own convenience. So I'm not actually drawing. Looking at the reference on the left, I've just put it there to every in the context. You might have a difference it up, and this depends on your equipment. To me, this solution is the most handed. I've decided that I'm not commending over the whole process, describing what happens struck by stroke as it would get a bit too confusing and impractical. The method has been explained in the previous lecture, so with that principle in mind will create the entire drawing. This case has been sped up almost 10 times, so I'm not actually drawing this past once again. This method is very straightforward there, with some practice, you realized, and be very surprised that you can make very difficult drawings that are correct in proportions and structure. To simplify the process, you can always subdivide degree even more So instead of having one by one centimeter square , you can never 0.5 by 0.5 centimeters, which is basically five millimeters. Instead of describing this process that might step, I'd like to talk to you about the importance that drawing had throughout the history of art and also mention some of the greatest artists off the past who were excellent draftsman. One with the first artist you really captured my heart when I was younger was unready. Sollitto. The Sarto was an Italian painter from Florence. His real name was Andre and Manolo. Different Chase. Could you look at the power of the media, even gnocchi, which is a very name he's famous for. His drawings May with someone the sanguine is a chalk off reddish brown color has been very popular for centuries for drawing another great artist. There was a huge source of inspiration to me, and maybe the rest of the world was Michelangelo Bernero, t Michelangelo in English. It's really hard to try to comprehend the immense talent that Michelangelo had and is well considered one of the greatest artist believed as we focusing on drawing only we can see here some beautiful prepare retirees rolling for some famous frescoes cultures along the same line off genius. We have Leonardo da Vinci, another incredible artists, and also inventor, architect, astronomer, scientist, musician and what else? There is a huge collection off Luna of strong wings around the globe. Subjects comprehend the unimaginable from botanical studies in that realistic views, toe anatomy sections and terrifying war machines. Another hugely important artist was Raffaello Sanzio, also known as Rafael. Together with Leonardo and Michelangelo, he forms the Trinity off great masters. Off the Italian run actions. There are many drawings of rifle. Most of them are studies for major paintings and frescos. With his work, Rafael has created an ideal off beauty that inspired generations of artists. One of them was shown a goose Dominique hunger. I personally concede their arm one of the most talented artist ever believed is exceptional . Drawings and paintings have been a huge ISP erection to me, and the way I draw today is still influenced by his work. If you look at these drawings, you see that shapes are mainly created by a modulated line which becomes Liza and heavier. Along its path was a famous portrait painter any sport traits of influential in important people of his time, whether they were painted the drawer are his greatest legacy. Another French after So I Really Love is shockingly Davey. The V was a neoclassical painter and also the teacher along. There are some magnificent drawings from the V, from which you can actually spot the grid structure. So even the greatest artist used the great method for the artworks. And then there are so many other incredible artists and draftsman, and it's impossible to name them or some of them that are really at my are on Draymond Dayna do your air, believe me, Rondonia, Cheesy, and Hans Holbein, the younger himself who made a series of exquisite color drawings on paper. So this lecture has been a bit different from the others. In real time. I spent one hour, 20 minutes to complete the drawing, and if I have to commend for that long describing each Strug, it would have been very tiring to follow. So this clip has been shrunk to about 5.5 minutes, which is a more acceptable time. You can download this rolling as part of the materials available for the schools. Please refrain from skipping this stage because you can download the drawing. Keep in mind that the goal here is to learn, and there are no other ways than practicing a lot in the next lecture. We're going to learn after use the past or in for a shock. 8. Understanding the Path Tool in Photoshop: in this lesson, we're going to learn how to use the path toe we create. A new document off about 1500 by 1500 picks is at 72 d p I. The PATH tour is deciding here. Basically, with this to selected, you can create path. So this is a puff. Many of you might be already familiar with this tool in the strait, also as the same functionality. So you create path with this tour, and then you can select and manipulate the path with this store with a black cow. Or you can select the path and move it. Why, With the white horror, you can select the individual points, forming the path and manipulate the handles so you can selectees so like that to delete a path you can press backspace or delete. If you click impress shift, you can create straight lines or 90 degrees or even 45 degrees path to see the path you can click on this icon here. Otherwise you can go window path. You have a working path here, and if you double click, you can save the path. As for layers, you can create pathway years and into each of them. You can draw some path, and there's which between the layers, so we don't need them. Now. If you want to create a curved path, you have to click and drug and then click and drug as you can see the kind of changes. If you drag the handles more, as we did before, we can now select the black Arrow and move a bit the path. Or, if you want to adjust, occur, you can select the white horror and then play around with the handles. If you press and hold, you can find some interesting two options. I never really used a free hand path to which I believe is not that used for this is quite useful at Anchor Point or which adds a point, and this one is to delete an anchor point. So if we select odd, we can aren't anchor points along the path. You can do the same with the curved path. We now switch to the delete anchor, pour into, and we can obviously delete points. If you delete days, it will go straight there as this is a linear path. Deleting along curves with create some problems so If you delete a point, you will probably need to readjust it Have with the white horror. This is the convert point which basic transforms air curve anchor point to linear. So as you can see, it kills the curvature and create a straight line between points. This function doesn't work on the linear path as being already linear. We go back a bit by pressing common alzette a few times we select now they're White Arrow. We can select one point and move it as we saw. You can move the handle now. If you press old, you can move. Only one handle keeping the other one still. Now we create a random shapes. Something like these can be any shape. You then select the black arrow, you select the path and then you click thes Aiken here days transformed the path into a selection. Once you have a selection, you can create a new layer and feel this selection with a chosen color so we can undo that . An alternative to free with color would be to select the path, choose a color you like, and then press these Aiken here and these feels the path with color and we do that. You now select a round brush said the size to about five pixels. We select the path, and then we pressed this hiking here and we go back. So let's make a quick example. With the puff selected, I create a new layer, choose one color, transformed the path into a selection and fill it with color. Now select the PATH tour. You can create a line. It can be anything you like, and then you close the path. Now we select the path, transform it again to a selection, create a new lawyer and she's a soft airbrush. Now we make the color lighter, and then we paint a little bit off the selection so the color is fading. At this point, we de select and create a clipping Musto by pressing common old G or control old G. We do that again. Create path, create selection, Choose this time a darker color Hi this election with common age and start painting and finally convert the layer into a clipping mask. Now, if we create a new document can be 1500 by 15. Under picks is but this demonstration we can create just two random shapes. So click and press shift to make the path straight and then click and dropped so we can make a curve and close the path Double click to save the path. And then we can have these other shape you click impress shift we do 45 degree, then go straight and closed the path Now with the white arrow. We just want to amend this Boeing using the keyboard. We have this shapes select both of them with a black arrow moving to the center s. Tell them up a bit. Now, if we select the path and create a selection with these now you select the other path and you click the same Aiken. But with the old key pressed, this window will pop up. And if you select odd, the first selection will be up to the 2nd 1 And we wouldn't do this. If you do the same as before, select the path press old and now you select subtract. You have this selection minus the 1st 1 Lastly, we go back, select the path, please. We're all pressed and this time we intersect the selections and you will get this kind of selection here. So now that we explored the path to functionalities, we are now ready to make the actual path for drawing in the next lesson. 9. Making the Paths in Photoshop: in this lesson, we're going to make the path for destroying. So we selected toe we click and drug that we press hold to kill the handle, Then click and drug on a deal would do the fact. Maybe you want to decrease the capacity of the drawing so you could see better and we follow the perimeter's her off the hat. Here we can go outside, as I will explain. Later on, basically, the heart will seat on the hair. Now we're doing that this side of the face click and drug and again repress old to get a corner on angle and again, we don't want to follow their in perimeter. And we finished the We do the face, the pary myself to face the margin, then goes behind the beard so we don't really care about the path here. Then we go a little, be outside the shirt and we do the neck and we closed a path. Now we do the mouth, the upper lip click and drag to try to be precise them. You double click on the path to save the path, and then we do this line and we close the path going on the outside. I will explain during the painting process. Now we do the nostrils and we can do the I. So we click and drug and when we get to the dear docked, we closed the path, said. Now I'm kind of amending the path with the white horror and then I do the iris. The eyes are very important, so you probably have to pay extra attention, especially the most important part of the face. It is good that you want to amend switching from the path toe to the white Hira. Now we do the people again. We want to amend it a bit. There was which back to the path to and we create the path for the left eye call. Now we come back down and finish with tear duct again. We do the iris just amending a bit. So it's basically all about switching from the PATH tour to the White Arrow so we can amend the path. You will get very familiar with this store and it's quite powerful, so it's good to to learn. Now we can do that hat so we follow the line that creates the part. We don't mind about the league leaders. They're attached to the hat at the moment and then we go down trying to follow his best as we can. The calf and we closed the path and then we do the upper part off the hat again. Same principle, click and drug until we get and nice curvature. And then we closed a path. So we do now d remaining part off the hat and we closed a path. Now we do the bit, obviously the beard as well as the hair on not solid mass. So this path, it's just a reference, and I think that could be enough. In the next lesson, we're going to explore an alternative to the path toe using appropriate. 10. Alternative to the Path Tool in Procreate: if you're not that into the path making method in front of shop and you prefer working appropriate. But maybe you see want to working for a show. But you don't like the powerful together. You can always create shapes by actually making a perimeter with a brush and then feel it with color. So we're going to career a new layer. And for this work, we need to use the heart brush which can be found here. I would increase the streamline upto a certain value around 50 or 60% as he can help a bit . Be sure passes. It is said 200% and maybe the Christie is a bit and then simply trade what we see. So we're going to make the perimeter off the hair. And this method is probably quick by, in my opinion, less precise than the path tool. But obviously, if you want to remain inside procreate, this is the option you have. Once the perimeter is done, you dragon dropped the color into the shape in procreate. This function is called color drop. There might be some spots that you have to touch up a bit in the same way we do the hair onto the other side of the face. We traced the perimeter then, Yeah, We want to paint the matter of the hair without describing all the little ones that are against the background. Now the profile of the face. I fixed the car of a bait and then joined the two lines here. Same thing is before we want to paint only the mouse and we caught a drop. This area, we create a new layer and we move it down. So the hair up on top of the scheme were about to paint. Here we go a little bit on the inside as the moustache would be on top off the skin. We can go all the way down the beard and do the color again as the color would be on top of the skin. You can go on the outside now we jump to the top and do the forehead. If we now hide the hair, we can simply join the ends by. Instead of following the drawing on the nave. We do it in this way and then we call a drop the skin. You now show the hair and move the drawing layer on top of the stock, and we fixed this quickly. We select now a darker color. Create a new layer with the same approach. We do the beard with anger on top of the scheme, so we sure the background won't be visible with them. Followed. The rumors have the mouth, and finally, we can call a drop the beard to color the mouth. We need to create a new layer. Place it underneath the beard. Change color. We campaign these. We don't making the perimeter because the shape of the math is already created by the beard . If that makes sense now the ice say method. Select the face, create a new layer, switch collar, toe a light gray and then paint again. Create a new layer switching toe a dark black and then draw the very myself. The I was fast and then call or drop it. When I go back to this layer, we get same color by holding down, and we do exactly the same with deep for the left eye perimeter fast. Then we get the same dark black off the left iris, and we draw campaign the right iris and then call a job. Basically, that's the concept for making the shapes in procreate, or even in for a shop. If you don't want to use the path toward in the next lesson, we're going to create the color palette. 11. Obtaining the Palette: in order to create the pallet. We don't need agreed so we can delete it and we can also flat in the image. Now we reduced the image size a bit. We can set the document to be 15 bite when you once intermediates roughly and then saved the image in J Peg, adding at the end of the name to illustrator in choosing quality 10 we launched Illustrator open up the image we saved Early on, we select the artwork and go window image trace the panel will pop up In here you have a number of very useful presents. Feel free to spend some time and see the differences between them as the image traces very powerful tool for our purpose. We want to select Low Fidelity Fatah. I preferred these to the high fidelity Father because it creates a quite limited bands of colors. This process can be a bit slow and that's the reason why we reduced the image size in for a shop. If we look at the result now, we see that the process has converted a raster image into a vector artwork and the present that we have chosen as restricted the number of colors, and now it's quite easy to clearly identify them. Now we can export the image in J Peg a PNG. It doesn't really matter backing for the shop we opened. If I we just exported, we create a new layer and which is the brush toe from the brush list. We want to select the heart round with an increased the size of the brush up to a certain size. If we press in old old the brush stores, which is to the I drop with the I drop active, we can pick the brightest point of the scheme released the old key and paint double check that you are painting on the empty layer and no on the background. We do the same for the second color and defends. We can skip some colors and she's a dark it one and paying the fourth swatch. Now we're going to pick the back of colors from the other side of the face and paying. The fifth watch ceased and the sever, the last one, which is the darkest the skin palate, is now done. Now we do the same for the eyes. As you can see, there are less colors here, so we pick the ones available. A bright color, a dying kinda and the black. We now do the lips, bright color meeting color and the color from the lower lip, and we picked the only two available colors from the apple. Now we do the beard speaking the lightest color and progressively the dark it once on day we get five watches. Once we got the pallet, we opened the drawing. We may off Sean. We are not the layers, and we moved them underneath the background as we don't need them anymore. We can read label the drawing layers, so it's easy to identify them. Now we can drag and drop the palate onto the drawing document. We can scale them up a bit with comment, T or controlled tea and shift to constrain proportions. At this point, we want to name This watch is so you can take one of the pences or fine brushes and a sign of name so you write down scheme eyes, lips, NBA's. I'm now typing up a bit the pilot layout and move it somewhere comfortable, renamed the Layer and again assign a color label. In this case, yellow. I always say progressively, which is generally a good practice. In the next lesson, we're going to explore set off skin colors. 12. Exploring a Variety od Skin Types: in this lecture, we're going to study the color of the skin. What you see here are my old paintings made on campus or wooden board at the beginning of my artistic Correa as a traditional portrait Penta, the aspect that I used to find most challenging was the ability to pay the skin using the right color. I was very confused about skin tones. I just couldn't understand it. And this because I was looking for a unique solution to be adopted for every single paintings. But I couldn't find it because, in fact, the scheme is the result off several colors mixed together. Obviously, there are many shades of skin pigment action from dark brown to like pink. If no even white in case of urbanism. To make it simple, I would say the skin colors, whether the ethnicity are all within the brown spectrum. Starting from this range, you can go darker, Liza. Warmer cooler. Here you can see a selection of paintings made by some very famous artists, like Caravaggio, Booty, Shanley, Leonardo Shockley, Davey, Hunger, Jerome and some others. As you can see, we have a very good selection of skin times, and they're all very different from each other's. But again, they something they have in common, the color off the skins are over braiding within the brown rage. So if we have a look at them, we have the pale skin typical in some Flemish art, like in Bund, awaiting camping, the warm skin. And Carol Rogers has shown here in the family's boy with a basket of fruits or the fortune teller, the more neutral, flat, yellowish color typical in BOTTICELLI's paintings. And here is the Birth of Venus and also this beautiful painting from Jerome, representing a budget bazooka, which was a soldier off the Ottoman Army and then after slight hung, who was an incredible portrait painter and draftsman. And here are four paintings showing a very divert skin. Don't if you compare them right in the next lecture, I'm going to pick one off the pallet and do a comparison. The construction between father shop and procreate 13. Photoshop or Procreate?: in this lecture, I'll show you how to paint and blend in, father shop and procreate. At the end of the click, you will see that you can get basically identical results. So it's up to you which software you want to use. We want to create a new document. We can set it to 1500 by 1500 picks is at 72 d. P. I and press OK with zoom in up 200%. Then you double click on the background to create a layer, and also we want to create a new layer. Now we have in the skin palette and as we seem before, we have a lot of skin tones. We can take any of them for this demonstration. So I'm going to choose the pilot from Yakup upon Tomoe. As I particularly like this warm skin tones we selected and then drag and drop onto our documents so we can close days. We now create an additional a choose the brush to and then clicking old, we pick the darkest color. If you right click the brush tool selected, you can choose a brush. You might have a different list of brushes these ones. Here are the default for the show brushes. I just deleted the once and never use. I select the heart brush, then decreased the capacity to about 40%. And then I start painting. As you can see, the way paint is to repeatedly create brush strikes and the color will adopt. Then you picked the second Carla and start painting on top of the pre use one, and you do the same with the fat color. Let me pick this one straight. Now I'm skipping one color and go to the next one and then paint. If you didn't know where the rapacity down a touch and pick the darkest color you can paint where the two collars made. You basically start blending in this way, so you do the same for each color. In terms of direction of the brat. Strike is good to break the floor so you can paint at different angles because you want to compare a calf IQ. Not that uniform. Look, when I met be with what I've done. I duplicate delay and match them in this way. Colors would be more solvent and the Paige now, if you want to you can know with capacity about once again and keep on painting. We can actually at the very dark brown at the end of the Grady. And so we do these speaking one dark color and paint as we did before. Now we want to blend this colors together. You don't want to use this much toe, as in my opinion, is not that great. You want to use the mixer brush store, which is a very powerful but not very known tool you can choose from several presets. You have dry, moist, wet and very wet. I don't particularly use presets. So, Professor, using my own sect ings, I put here fine five 89. And with the settings, I stopped blending colors together. Especially during this face. You have to find your best set things. And this is also depends on the sensitivity and pressure settings off your work on tablet. If you have one or any other tablet you might have. However, the principle is to set the to to be very SAPTA, so you have more control over the blending. Another important aspect is to break the uniformity off the gravy and unless you need something Chinese polish. It's a good practice to create some cows and what you're doing as the nature. Nothing's really perfect. So when you paint or blend, feel free to go up and down, left to ride and allow the colors to penetrate into each other, clean up the borders to have a nice cut. Now we tried to do the same in appropriate here we have the Grady in. We created in for a shop, so we create a new layer and we can select this heart brush, which makes this kind of brush strokes. We decrease the brush big. We basically do the same with even for a show picked the darkest color and paint. Select the second color and pained. We set down the rapacity so we can build up the times we can. She knew, picking colors and paint. Now we know where down capacity and do the same as we did before. We're going to pain over the border where colors made again, as we did before. We create some cows and try to obtain. I'm not too precise shading. Now we picked the darkest brown and paint. I think this is can be enough and could be a good base. Pride blending so now Blending appropriate is a very large number of matching brushes. I normally use the soft brush. You can then regulate the size off the brush and then start brushing again. It's not too different from what we've done in for a shock. It's more about the way you use this brush, how much pressure you apply to the screen or public it. When I met people what I have here, I duplicate to make the tones more solid in opaque. Imagine them together and keep on smudging. So as you can see, you can get very similar things. Whether you use for a shop appropriate. It's not really about the brush, but I would say it's more about this much. In fact, my idea ward flow is to draw in pain into procreate and then bring everything into father shop and used the mixer brush toe. This much I have really liked procreate because I think it's great to be able to draw and paint directly on the screen, and I'm not able to do that with my make. As I have a walking tablet and not authentic. In the next lesson, we're going to prepare a canvas prior to painting 14. Prepping the Canvas: in this chapter. We're going to prepare the campus so we can start painting. We open up the drawing. We hide the palette as we don't need them. Now we do common A, which is select all common C and the common V into the drawing. We then rename the layer into campus. Now we want to reorganize. DeLay is a bit. I think, that if we speech the white background to be black, it's visually better. So we invert or we do comment. I we have to make the campus bigger because we need to place the reference next to drawing . We do image canvas size. We want to modify the with off the document. Here we can set it to 60 centimeters and anchor the document to the right. Now we fit the background with black. We select the references which to the move toe repressed your key and dropped to cover the reference by also pressing shift to force it along, the same line was reached to the crop tool by pressing C and create a selection trying to get the same space onto the left margin impress Enter The document is now ready. What we do now is to create some cuts from the reference and place them next to the correspondent parts. So we create selection and then copy and paste, and we do that for the ice, the nose and the mouth. We now want to rename delay, so we have the stock tidy. We can also delete both agreed and numbers and letters as we don't need them anymore. If you want, you can also believe the drawing rainfalls with it before, as I start painting the left eye first, I'm assembling the palate in the I cut a bit better or in a way, if it's comfortable and hide the ones I don't need. I saved the document now and send it to procreate. Knighthood. In the next lecture, we start painting.
