About This Class

Hello Beginner!

Do you have an iPad, Procreate already installed on it, a stylus and played around in the program a little bit you can't really seem to figure out how to create those stunning textured illustrations you see on Instagram?

4d8caaa2

I have a solution for you!

In this this class I will guide you through an easy-peasy illustration process I have developed for myself, with experimenting, practicing, analysing the works of my favourite illustrators and visiting a Design Academy in Rome to perfect the process with professionals.

I have broken down the process to 4 simple steps: The Base, The Front, Shading and Texture, Details, by which you will get a greater understanding of the build up of an illustrated object that is layered.

If you have ever checked out a working file of a professional illustrator, you have seen that they have few hundreds of them. You might ask WHY? Why to work in layers? You will get answers and a greater understanding of this in the class!

1. Introduction: Hi guys. My name is Alexander Gabbert and I'm a professional art teacher. Artist on illustrator. Most of my illustrations were created with watercolors, but nowadays I'm really into digital. I used to paint in different programs like photo shop or Alchemy, but I discovered procreate lately on it just blew my mind how user friendly that program ISS I was able to translate my traditional process intrigued but actually took me a while until I figured it out. I experimented a lot and devil of the process adverts like a dream. I also visited on academe in Rome. Teoh perfect this process which professionals and as I manar teeter by profession I made this process big in our friendly so that you could start your digital illustration. Johnny, more easily in this class, we are going to go through this process together from initial sketches to illustrating a motivational coffee mug. In this class you will learn how to working procreate, its basic functions and Bert flow. You can learn the best way to pick your colors. So the day burke well together how to work the layers have to play in your automatic had and also which brushes I find to be the best, but I also provide my personal illustration brushes with this class so that you can use them. At the end of this, classy will be able to create a full layered and shaded illustration, often one dimensional coffee mug. For the class, you will need an iPad, a stylist and the latest version off Brooke Raids and, of course, bill to learn digital illustrations. So if you're ready, let's get started. 2. Intro to Procreate Resources, Brushes, Layers, Colors: Dennis Charge video. I would love to do just a little intro to procreate if you have never worked in it. I recommend you to take a full intro to procreate class if you need it. But I gather this class will also do a good job in teaching you the program. So in this video we will discuss the resources. Canvas, layers, brushes and color site. First broke created an app that you can download to your iPad Onley. There isn't a desktop version, but there is a pocket version for mobile on their website. There is a full artist handbook where you have everything explained from opening the program, organizing your art, ICS and all the tools that are available. So I really recover and you to God dis I also becoming due to follow procreate on instagram . They frequently post tutorials artworks you can get in spite from the latest innovations. For example, you can now export an animated GIF, which is awesome. So if you want to be up to date on, this is the way to go. So it's open the program when I'm using as the newest iPad pro with a second generation apple pencil and I have a paper like cover on the screen. Ah, which really gives a nice experience because it adds a bit off a traditional feeling with its resistance. So it is really not like pink painting on a screen, but it adds to it, and it's really awesome, like it was surprising for me, but it is really useful. So let's get back to the gallery. Askew can see. I have a little must here, so I should just clean up. But anyways, let's create a new file What I love to use our you can hear to desk plus sign here. What I love to use is the A four size. You can create custom size canvas, but I love the A four because it is big enough to be an a four sheet paper, but still a too big to have a limited number of layers. You can check how many layers to have here in the canvas information. So his ranch, baden here you have it to canvas the canvas information, and you can see that I have a Mexican layers 57 layers, which is more than enough up here. You can find the most important tools the brushes, the layers and the colors. So let's talk about the brushes first. The brushes that come with the program are really great. I used it a lot. I mean mainly D £60 ill, some artistic pounds, ills and some textures that come with the program. So they are really amazing. But you can also create your own brushes if you hit this plus sign on. It is a really great because it is easy and it is really fun to play around. You can also buy brushes. Ah, let's go to the creative market. Let me just show you. So there's a site called Creative Market and if you search for appropriate brushes, I already have it here you can find So Maney brush packs. I found his gua Shi Shader brushes back is amazing on texturizing or pro procreate brushes their 52 textured brushes, which is just amazing. They are not too expensive, and I really love to support other creative. So I say one or two, Bry, brush back. But anyways, the brushes we're going to use here are my own. These illustration brushes. There is a liner and a shader these two brushes were inspired by two brushes from the quash brush set. I have boat, so I really recommend you to get does brushes as well if you're interested. But I have customized these to my own needs, and I am including days, two brushes in there with starts of section. And so now go and download them. Both have, ah, nice textures and work together like magic. Now let's talk about the layers. In digital, we work in different layers because it is easier. You can, of course, paint on one layer. Let's see in the gallery. This isn't one layer. This is one layer. I cannot move anything around. So why would you paint in one layer? If painting you layers makes your workflow quicker, you have the opportunity to move objects around. Let's see the original of this. So this is the original. And if you take a look at how I have polling tee off layers here. So if I select the layers, uh, which day lettering and I hit? Move. I can move this around as I want, and it is really useful. You can also adjust. The cow is Onley off this element Let's see. I will just put this So you see, I can change the color off amok. How amazing is that? I'm not affecting any other things on this artwork, so it is really useful. And if I can do it, ISS, why not? So you do the hard work illustrating once. Then you can reuse some elements. We purpose them re colored and more so. Simply working you layers makes sense as it ever media. You need to think ahead and plan your painting. You don't necessarily need to make a real plan just to be mindful off what's at the back. What is in the frowned. If you work in layers, you are free to rearrange the layers as well. It again makes things easy, so I can just hold down the layer and just put them wherever I want. Now let's talk about the colors. I will return to the original. You have endless possibilities in procreate. You can import reference images and pick the colors to create your own palette. Or you can just randomly create a polit or just simply pick colors you like as you are progressing in the Arctic. What I personally love to do is to get a reference photo big domain colors from it, and then adjust that poets to my own leads and style. And then as I go, I also pick my own colors. So, for example, I made death, uh, color palette. And then I realized when painting and oh, okay, I need a doctor version of this. So I picked this color. Go to this classic and I can just adjust the brightness off this color. So I recommend you to have a plan, but also be flexible. I already have some color combinations that I find that work really well together, like the blue with its darker version or brown with orange tents. As you can see on this image, it has a really nice. It gives it a really nice natural texture. Generally, we can say that to get the best result, you need to combine a meal based color with its darker version for shading and lighter version for highlights. For example, like this if you look at look, take a look and dispel it. As you can see, I have free main colors pink, orange and blue, but I have a lighter and darker, darker Weldon from each of them. And it will give us a really nice pallet to work with. I will show you don't work. I've done with this pellet. And this, uh, this frog is the example. So I have used the base color do deca version and a lighter version two be able to render thanks a little bit. Okay, So I think we discussed the most things in general. Let's got to practice in the next video. 3. Technique Practice: Okay, So now you have a document off a four size, you have downloaded the brushes, and now you pick a base color. It's darker, and it's lighter version. Okay. So to make a new palette, click here to the plus sign and go back to this classic. And you have this empty pollen here as it is set to the D fold. So now you can just speak a color. I will pick a middle range of fit notes ta brightest, and know the darkest just a middle so that I have a base color. And now I will to get this, uh, to get the brightest for the sidelines, go to the most saturated part and get it a little bit brighter. This is going to be a highlight. And now the darker version was going to be down here. Okay, so I have my palate. You can name this palette if you want. But, Linda, some you want to drawing the shape. So now picked a base color, which is dust wound. Click the liner. So what we are going to do is to draw a shape. I'm going to draw a circle. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to hold down my, um, stylists and it will activate the quick shape function which real finds the closest shape to what I have drone And I wanted a circle and it's writing Ellipse created, but I can click edit shape and I can make it a circle and I can Dan adjust it. But okay, I want a circle and I want this shape to be closed because I will fill it with color. And the way I'm going to do it is dragged the color from here. Now, if you take a closer look, you can see the dare is a line here. The reason for that is because the liner brush has a texture on its both edges. So it is. It looks nice outside the shape, but inside it gives us these pixels it varied capacity. Ah, which is the stopping? So when we're going to do is that we are going to go through it again. You can do with a bigger brush, actually, buzz anyways, so we go through it again. I will just it raised this part from the shape so that it lose butter, Add back a little bit off, Dexter. Okay, Nice. Unjust. Fill this pixels. Okay, so now we have the basic shape and we're going to shade it. Now there is a function named Alfa Log. If you hit layers on click on the layer you have You have it here the outlook or take two fingers on, slide this layer with them and then it will Alfa lock itself. You will see that. Ah layer is Alfa locked? If there is this checked background which means that you cannot paint outside this shape Um that you have drone are the pixels you have painted already or Alfa logged. You cannot paint outside them on Lee on them. So now let's shadiness circle. I will just place it to them in gold. Okay, so take the shader brush and choose these darker words and off your color. Um, this brush is pressure sensitive. So if you if you press lighter, it leaves a light marks. And if you press harder, it leaves hard marks, which is really great because you can shade like more smoothly. As you can see, I already created really nice shading hair. So the Shader branch has a wonderful texture you can use it for simple texturizing, not necessarily for shading. I use it for both. Now you can do this shading on a separate layer so that you can adjust it layer. I usually don't do this, but if I'm not sure if the shading will remain there at the end, I might want to place it on a new layer. And also if I I think that I will have something on this object I want, it's to be shaded as well, so I would be able to put it under the shading I have just done. So let's do this. Yeah, I hope you know that if you tap this creamy two fingers, he will undo what you have done so under the whole shading. And now click here, select delayer and now hid a plus sign. It will create a new layer about but the shape will remain selected. So now if you paint, you will paint on the shape, but on a new layer. So this is also good if you plan to at something later to your shaped like a lettering on the coffee mark. So you just play the lettering below the shaded layer and it will become shaded as well and will not be about the shading, which would look artificial. So let's just do the shading on this new layer. So again he had a shade, a brush and just go very liked us. And now let's get a lighter color and do some highlights up here. If you overdo some of these, you can always pick back to base color and redo. Or if you are on the new layer, you can erase without losing the base colors, so I will adjust it. Raise and you can see I can do that. So let's try to add a leather into the middle so I will just create new layer. Do the studio pan, which you can find in the inking. It is the studio pan, which I like the most for lettering, and it is really pressure sensitive, so it works really great for hand laddering. Despite a leather into the middle, we did darker color, put it behind the lettering, and you can see that it is already like shaded here on here is full Great. So this is basically the process I'm following when illustrating, Um, I got a base color and paint the shape I need and I get a doctor color and shade the awful lot shape and get a lighter colored for highlights. So in the next video we will do the main project on We'll go in more detail how to work with layers. 4. The Base: they already told you. We are going to illustrate a coffee mug. And I thought we could add a motivational lettering on it. So let's call it a motivational coffee mug. Um, you can draw coffee mark from your imagination. I mostly do that, but if you are not sure how to draw something, you can always use reference images so you can open safari or Pinterest or Google. I have interest here. Just search for coffee marks and find, uh, coffee mug. That is ah, in a 45 or less degree angle because we want to see its side, but also that there is coffee inside. So, for example, like this or like this, or like this, so that we see this part off the coffee monks. So choose one. I have chosen dishpan open, procreate and just hold down safari already app You have opened. So this image is perfect. Now you have a choice to draw demand by observation or dragged image to a new layer and copy outlines. So if you hold on to the image Andi, drag it into your cameras. It will just put up here so you can copy Valentine's. But it is not the best practice. Because if you always just copy, you are not improving your drawing skills. So if you are unsure for you can copy the outlines. But I recommend you to take my droving course on observation to develop this killing you. So what I'm going to do, um, I'm going to copy the outlines because it speeds up my presence that I can draw coffee mug so hit, so create a new layer, choose black on a sketching pencil and just Gober the ill appliance. Okay, when you already just delete this layer and we don't need this reference image anymore, what is a nice trick to see if you were proportional or if you did any mistakes? He under static button on click on flip horizon alone and you will see if there's something like not looking good or something you should improve. I often do this to see if I am proportional or have something distorted in an angle or something. My desk. But as I copied this, I think this would be like okay, but I love to draw marks from this side, so I will just keep it here. So I have drawn the coffee mark. And the next step is to draw the main shape which we can call actually, this silhouette off the mark to see this catch, we will keep it at the top and study to multiply. So hit this in the button or letter and hit multiply. And this will make that we can see through this catch. And we need to keep this layer at the top only. So if we have, when we are going to create a new layer for the silhouette dragged below it. Okay, so I will work with the same politicked I used in the practice. But you can create any polity like I choose the darkest color for this silly wait as this is going to be the bottom off, this whole what I love to do is to side of background color to a middle gray, to do days in the layers, heed the background and choosing the little grey so that you can see the colors better. So what I'm going to do is to sell like Attila the a liner again on I will pain to silhouette the whole See what of this money? Quit it so I'm just going to speed this up again so that I don't worry. Okay, One more note. If I do something like this, I can undo or just double tap on the pencil and, uh, and erase. So now I have a basic shape. Ah, that I will not shade. Now. I believe it's full. Later. What I'm going to do is to create the front off the mock on. I'm going to do that in the next video. 5. The Front: Okay, so here we are, on what I'm going to do is to at first turn on this catch layer, and I will see in this shape this made basic shape because I really need deaths to be right . So I will just go around this this main shape again on just correct any mistakes in the say that I find it? Don't look good. Were should look better. Like those joins here. Meeting points. This should be a little bit smoother. A gas, the stew. Pointy. So this is just details, so I will not go too much into dies. Okay, so now I'm going to select this layer on, create a new one about it, and I'm going to do the front off best player and turn on this catch again. So I will paint front of Democra with the base color, so I will choose the base color. Jews still liner brush. Yeah, and I can see that this is not right. So I will Just saying this the sway, as you can see as i m e layers, everything is adjustable. So I was so much flexibility in what I'm doing is really worth it. That extra attention on mindfulness off. What to put on which layer like that was the most disturbing part when I started to do this , But okay, I will just increase the size of my brush and just repaint the whole Okay, so I have a back. I have a friend and I will turn off this again, see if I have something left out. Ah, if I have problems with the shape. Nice. Now let's put some coffee into it. So let's create a new way, er below this front. Jews a beach color discolor, but maybe a little bit. Liar. Yeah. So I'm again working with this liner brush and I will just paint the coffee here. Well, I have a copy. Looks nice. So now we have the base of the mark and the shading comes next radio. 6. Shading and texture: So Alfa Look, older layers. Yeah. The first thing I will do is to select the base shape, choose the base color. So I will choose this back onto the place color and choose the shader brush and make it a little bit smaller. And what I'm going to do is to make it more like lighter, but make it like deaths at its side. So I'm going to just go through it lighter. And the reason I'm going to do that is because I will have this nice dotted texture of with shadow as well. So I'm Ah, So what I'm doing at the top, I'm pressing harder so that I have this nice edge off the mark. And if I get this light, I can like, um, connect these two sites off the mark. And if I want to get back something from this Shader, I will just shade. I will just get back to the Shader and just go through it again. The reason it is better to do it like this is because it will really give. Ask this nice. Nice check, Dexter. I hope you can see what I'm doing. Ok, so now let's shade the throne. So what I'm going to do is to select it and create a new layer about so that I have the shading on a separate new layer. And I'm going to select a bigger brush and just really lightly go through it so that it already has a little texture and then get it a little bit smaller and make sure that the capacity here it's that to the to the center it is on 52%. This brush works well. We're just starting. So what I try to do now is to get the highlight. And I'm going to put this highlight on not on the shader shaded layer but on the main front layer. The reason is because it will just keep this nice texture. I already created with the brush and I can just work with the base color without interrupting the shading. So I will just make this nice blending here. Now I want to add highlight at the top here. But again, as you can see, I'm below that shaded picture so that it it remains like here. And I will God the shader brush on. Do this be, well, wit. So that it does rendered well, no, Uh, this select And I guess the dis monk iss like finished. But I will add more details to it on. OK, the coffee is left out. So I will just go to the pallets on Jews there, sir. Light brown, I will shade It's again a swell. So I will just go around that and choose a really light version to the meal to make it, like, really nicely blended. Well, yeah. Get back to this darker party. Oh, it looks really nice. I would drink this coffee right now, so let's make some details in the next video. 7. Details: okay. What I love to do for details, As you can see, this artwork has no Weinberg. It has some inclusion here, which means that there is no Lineburg in real life. But the general rule is that the things that touch makes shadows and you paint those shadows. So if I with my fingers like here, you don't see a line here, but you see a shadow here. And this is what I tried to do at this illustration. So we have this line here. We have this line here are we have a darker here when we're to coffee touches. Uh, de de coffee mug is darker there because there is a shadow we should draw cost shadow, but it really doesn't matter. But what I love to do with lines in illustrations is that first, we're going to create a lettering care, so I just create a new layer and put it below. Ah, this shade layer, if you can stay this This is the shading I have on this monk. I have some shading below it. Like hair. This is the front. So I have a layer below this trading and I will get my darker color and go back to these in King Studio Pan. And I will just write something here, So Okay, I like this one. So I have smile here. As you can see, some of these letters got ah, like, really lost in the shading. So I'm going to get a darker color. Alfa, look, the lettering. God, my illustrations. Shader Just a little bit. I will Just degrees. So Dad thought it stands out on Doesn't say like to dark. So what I love to do with lines again. Ah, let's deal with the coffee. Um, I will choose a dark brown, get a liner, get it small and you can just Jews do a little You can do it in a different layers so that it it is adjustable. So you can do something like this. I don't like the color. So where was that milky color coffee color? Here it iss and choose this one So you can do something like this. Are there are D's? I don't know These, uh you know, patterns that they draw on your coffee, Otto, to divert cows for me. Or you can just be creator with I loved its flora element So I drill. It liked us. Ah, you can Just at some I don't know. Highlights own to the coffee to make a little bit of texture. Or as if it waas like milk. I don't know. You can just do whatever you want to decorate it. Okay. So as if it had some highlights. Ah, we can add highlights. I love to put highlights from the digest. Lightest color with dill liner. Not exactly Shater. So I can I will go back to death, and I can just over the opacity is that it is know that, um harsh and also do a little bit of this here. Great on. Also, you can add some patterns what I love to use. I will create a new layer below the lettering and one of my favorite artistic texture brushes. Mr. Panton, I'll let me just show you what it does. Okay? I most elected, uh, select and justice layer. You can do like textured lines, for example. I will just show you where I used it on it looked like Amazing. This guy's here on his shirt, was down with the serpent and brush, and he just looks amazing. So it's got back here and you can just do something, Whatever you want. Like, just play around or you can do like daunts. Okay, Like this one Better also, we deter phantom brush. Okay, on what is really fun to do, I will do Select all this is to create create us steam. Uh, we have We are going to create a new layer from all without and come here to d um, organic. And you have cotton rough and choose white. Let's group this. Ah, the way you can group this layers is to slide like deaths group. So now, um, if I want to move the whole group, I can just move by. My players remain the same. I will just put it hair. And on this new layer with the cotton brush and the white, uh, color, I will just create this nice. In fact, it looks amazing, right? So you can just play around with a Z. You can see I implemented some, like floral things into the steam. You can do it as well if you want. So I called this finished. There are so many things you can just do without it. But I think this is enough for now, I really allow how this turned out. You can change the background back to white, but then you will not see the steam. And as you can see, it becomes to nourished. I really loud e d middle uh, gray background for it. I hope you like this. I can't wait to see what you create. Post Iraq works into D Project Gallery. Let's see each other in the next video to sum up disk loss. 8. Final Thoughts: congratulations. You arrive to the end of this cleanse. I hope you liked it. Don't forget to uphold your project into the project gallery. Their project is to illustrate a motivational coffee mug. Ah would've process. I have guided you through in this class.
