About This Class

In the professional logo design business, effective logos are, in some cases developed using only text.

These are known as typographic logos and we can develop these by using existing fonts, modifying them with some special tricks to create something entirely unique!

I’m going to reveal EXACTLY how I develop typographic logos using fonts to yield a professional typographic solution.

We're going to work from the ground up, from the client logo design brief to the planning, right through to the execution of design form and methods of colouring.

1. Introduction: welcome to the course. It's my hope that the forthcoming information will enable you to excel as a designer. If you're succeeding in your skills, it means I'm succeeding as a teacher. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to start a discussion, and I'll do my very best to help I post new courses on a regular basis. So if you want to stay up the date, please be sure to click. Follow next to my using them by clicking follow. You'll get priority announcements when I launch new courses when I share, Resource is and when I launch contests. 2. Summary: Hey, my name's Daniel Evans and I'm a log or designer throughout my time is a local designer of exploring design various local types. Many log was, We see. And indeed, many locals I've designed consist of text coupled with an icon. A typographic local, however, is a local, which employees only taxed. It is the taxed, which is the logo. The many different approaches to development attacks based law goal and the opportunity sometimes depends upon the shape of the characters. In the FedEx logo, for instance, you'll say that there's an R Ole point and right to depict speed and reliability in the negative space between the A and the axe. Other times there will be a new and supplied, which gives the log or recognizable elements and raises it up off that of simple text. This might be achieved by working with what was already they, such as increasing the size of a character or adding in a subtle addition. Some typographical law goes there developed from scratch, and others are developed from existing funds. In this course, I'm gonna show you exactly how we take an existing fund and modify it creatively to develop an effective typographical ogle based upon the opportunities which present themselves. So let's jump right in and get started 3. Workflow: when it comes to design and law goes with symbols or custom typography drawn from scratch. It's 101 rule toe. Always use pencil and paper, since this allows for greater creative freedom in less time. When it comes to development, typographic law goes based upon existing fonts. However, I choose not to sketch prior to the project. If anything, that's something I'm a dio after. I have established the front. The reason being un place the font in the document tape over the company name Trice the characters to ships and then manipulate those ships is a safe it. This wouldn't be possible. The sketchpad, obviously, since it need to draw the fund characters perfectly on the move them and need to draw new instances in every case. So the Typographical Ogle, which employs an existing font, is one that I do on screen without any pre planning on paper. If I'm not changing the characters of a word to any particular degree and instead of choose to rely upon addition, Touch of the Triangle in the Ken would log off. For example, a may consider using pencil and paper, but the brainstorm concepts such as this so For the most part, I work on screen and pull out the sketch pad only if I want the brainstorm and a graphical elements. 4. Brainstorming: before I select the font of First need the plan what I ideally expect to get out of a font . I don't select fonts blindly and just make do with whatever possibilities they present. Even if it's a very subtle idea, such as depicting speed and movement like the FedEx local, for instance, it's important to note this down and base your fund selection upon this. Still, before ignorantly detail, I put pencil appear but a brainstorm. I believe that literally every venture should begin with the brainstorm. I even brainstorm gift ideas. Needless to see, a typographic law. Gore's are no exception and saws. He is my brand storm have carried out for an I T cloud storage company named Cloud Box. I've written the company name in the middle of the page. I split the name and the to brainstorming ideas related the cloud on the left and box on the right. If an idea spawns another idea at branch off and jot left down to, as you say, have a few doodles and their two While it probably won't evolve in actual symbols, it gives me an idea of what I'm keen on forming from the text the re occur and literal idea of mine, as you'll see is the former cloud of three circles. And in order to do this, I need around its style font, which have noted down also concept. Really, it in a box, seem a little bit too drab in contrast to the cloud. But if this could be worked in, well, it's definitely a consideration. So there it is, the pre project brainstorm with details about my expectations. It helps considerably. The with work floor keeps you in control and on path. It's all too tempting. Overlook things like this, but until he try them, you'll never find out how effective they are. So it's my recommendation to put pen appear but get started right away. Annual witness first hand the benefits that even bring a well planned project always ends up better than one isn't planned 5. Colour: Obviously, when we're using just text is a basis to establish an effective log or design we confined. Our options are quite limited where there's little opportunity in the actual form of the characters. We can always in a deuce small graphical elements. But the beauty is often and keeping the law goal is primitive, but there's meaningful is possible, that is to say, keep in a text based, one powerful asset we have our disposal, which should never be overlooked is color. Besides being a subliminal factor on itself to control emotions, collect and bear great vast significance to the actual name of a company or the business sector. Call. It can be used in various ways to depict various meanings as are gonna demonstrate with ease. Forthcoming law goes along. This is visas new log, or we can still consider their creativity by looking back at the previous law goal, in which they colored a portion of a yellow with a yellow portion applied to the V, it took on the form of a sitting bird, which helped give more depth to the brand. Using any other color besides orange perhaps would have negated the bird concept entirely. and saw selection of yellow here was apt. The color was a solution, assisted by the form of the V. On a much more primitive level, we'll take a look at a bays logo. The A B a local, has always bean a very colorful brand. The color enables log or stands for the whole spectrum, goods that can be found on their website. The close net of each character could represent that all the goods are to be found close to each other by a mere mouse. Click away. Whether this was the intention or not, or whether it gives you this impression even on a subliminal level will be subjective. The point is that if we insist in the using Bay basics text only law goes with no additions . The color becomes a controlling, important aspect. So besides using colors to of or commotion such as blue for calm, red for power and the like consider using color itself for the actual concept 6. Character Anatomy: Now I'm gonna introduce to you with character anatomy. Basically, this involves breaking down and naming parts of the characters. This isn't mandatory but knowledge, a current anatomies beneficial and typographic log or design. Since we mostly deal of characters. If ever we want to communicate the part of a typographic log or or character to a fellow designer, the character anatomy labels represent the terminology we might use. As the saying goes, If we want to do something, it's best to do it properly. And so you're gonna learn how it designed typographic locals on. You're gonna learn how to talk the Talk here Off Devices Sentence, which features characters which covers the array of most popular parts of characters. And so I'm going to go on to explain each. So moving on a number one the first this is the cue on the bottom portion of this is No one has a tail. It's No one is a tale for obvious reasons because, of course it looks like a tail. What you find is a protrusion coming from the bottom of a character, which extends past the baseline as generally norms. The tail, the most common, is found on the cue of the capital que Next we have the ball. That's a top portion on the bottom portion of the B. Technically, both of those portions could be highlighted. It's called a ball because obviously, it again, it looks like a ball so we could call the bottom portion of this ball also. So Capital B has two balls moving onto number three. The lower case R is highlighted at the bottom. This is what, in orders or Sarah For now, this is an exclusive to the Are alone. You'll find the serif on many characters in a Sarah based fund. Sarah was basically a slab or kind of flick at the end of any character. You see, there's also Serifis at the top off. The W two car is across to the right on Does also Serifis at the top and bottom of the end . So moving on to the an itself, number four, you see this highlight. That part is called a shoulder to call the shoulder because again looks like a shoulder that doesn't need any more explanation. Other than that, there's also Schuller's in an M because you'll see that chair is basically the same shape is an end doubled, moving on a number five. This is what's known as an arm, and it's known as an arm because it's one of two up a protrusions of the F moving on to number six. This is a D sender. Now this is what's known as stem. The vertical line is what's known as the stem of the P. However, the bottom portion, which descends below the baseline, is called the de Sander. Next we move on to the A. You'll see that the negative space has being highlighted. This is what's known as a counter. A counter is the ship of any sealed negative space in a currently likewise the negative space and an or or D is also a counter moving on a number it you'll see that this is called an Ascender. This is because it ascends above the line, the top line of the characters, so that's basically self explanatory. Next we go on number nine. This is what no one is a tale. Also, you say it doesn't share the same shape as the capital. Q. Teal. Nevertheless, this is known as a tail. On def. You would associate or fellow designer. This is the tale of the T. It automatically know what you're talking about. Moving on to number 10. This is represented by a Capital H, and it's called a crossbar and called across box. It's a bar going across. Could consider is a football goal if you wish, but that's self explanatory. Also moving on to the next. This little flick of the A is called Terminal. Now. That's not so obvious of the name, but that's what's called a Terminal one to remember. Next, we move on the AL, the capital. The vertical line rather is known as a stem of the stems and all forms of characters. There's two stems in the capital itch. There's a stem and the D. There's a stem and a capital B. There's a stem and a lower kiss are so any vertical line moving opens is known as a stem moving on the 13. You see that the law case G consists of two kind of formations. We have, like a circular or at the top, and at the bottom we have like a loop. Now the bit joins. Those two parts is known as the link symbol is that now there's a little part that hangs off the G at the top. This is called an ear because she could picture as a little part upon ahead. Moving on to 15 we tackle Aggie again, Andi. As I explained a couple of moments ago, this bottom portion is known as the loop. You find this mostly, and a G. Now the last one is represented by a couple s, and this is called a Spain. This is also another one, which is quite obvious because it represents a curvature of a human spine, so that covers the main fundamental descriptors of the anatomy of characters. Again, this is mostly Lingle, which you'll use to communicate with fellow designers. However, when you also conversing with a client using the correct terminology, albeit requiring elaborations of mines can make you shine as a professional. 8. Letter Form Analysis: the most creative the law Gore's are often those were to make use of current perform. To be able to develop law goes like this. We need to learn how to spot opportunity in the characters. Once we've sure in the eye and the mind, it becomes easier to be able to sit back and spot these opportunities. Some might be glaringly obvious. Others, not so much opportunities may arise from taking advantage of the form of a single character or to neighbouring characters of a company name. For instance, Whilst every fund will differ in its character form and will reflectively definite opportunities, we can take a look at a simple, primitive font to discuss this principle. So here we have some lower case letters of the complete alphabet to this font myriad pro. So if we look at the air, for instance, we can see that there's a shape in the negative space in the counter. And there's also some negative space here, which has some potential. So maybe there's like a big ship at the top in this, like a leaf shape at the bottom. You could use this single a assuming that is part of the company name unjust feature relief in this negative space in the counter, assuming to that relief is appropriate for the business. Looking at the B, this could be perhaps a hairbrush with C could be a crescent moon ship. The D could be a musical note. The E could be a smiley face. The F could be a telegraph post. For instance, the G we could work again and the same way we did with a with this big kind of shape in the negative space on the negative space and the counter the circle ship so you could do something with that. It could represent a person who was giving with the head as the counter on the neck of space. Here is an arm. The itch could be house looking at the I. This could be an upside down narrow footprint with the heel of the Tetlow, the I and the sole of the foot as the stem of the I. Looking at the J, this could be a convocation. Looking at the key formation. This could be a person with raised arms. The L could represent absolutely anything that's on the vertical, a plank of war. Do you name it, the M could be bridge. The end could be a rainbow and all could be a target. It could be a ball. The P could combine a cue ball and cute tip. The formation of the queue looks like a musical. Naught the are could be a lamb posed the s could be a piece of rope a t could be crucifix the you could be a smile. The V could be a downward pointing arrow. W could be to pencil nips and X could represent four arrows pointing inwards off course just across itself. The why I could represent a slide in those ads or the Z, as Americans call it, could represent a kind of fall the out table or a bed, you name it. So we've just analyzed the English law case alphabet form. The ideas which came in the mind were primitive, admittedly, but these are off the top of my head. As mentioned, the suitability of the opportunities will depend upon the nature of the business that the law go is to belong new, so you'll have to think that little bit deeper. The or, for instance, was recognized as a form which could be used for a ball. They should be useful as a betting site, log or censor could represent a soccer ball. If it were for a biology company, however, the ball idea would be disregarded. And instead you could think that little bit deeper to conclude that the circle could be used to represent a molecule. Remember, there's nothing to stop you from adding subtle additions to fulfill an idea. For as long as the addition doesn't become a symbol in itself and the majority of the log or depends upon the actual text, it will remain a typographic log or, in most cases, sort of summarize before you commence work on a typographic local first table, a company name set back and observe to see what in the characters. 9. Kerning: since typographic log or design is taxed best, it's important that we cover turning turnings, a process of space and characters so that as equal distance between each, because each character of a fund is developed within a bounding box, various unwanted gaps can result when certain characters on neighbouring. In layman's terms, some characters just don't work well against others in their raw, typed out form. So you can see that I've taped out the word Kern ing twice using two different fonts. Are both of these fonts require turning now? The reason being and the first you can see that there's a gap between the K and the A. The Logic Upton the is between the A in the all. There's also a sizable gap between the art and the M in comparison to the N and the I. So we're going to go ahead and remedy this by clicking upon this font. We go the type and then we go to create outlines. Now what this does is convert the actual raw font into shapes, so each letter of this font is now a shape regard object on group. We can now movie cheap independently, and that's exactly what we're going to do. So if we highlight whatever ships are characters we wanted to move. We can use the keyboards to make minor alterations in the spacing. So highlighting these on with the left are okay on the keyboard. I can move this across. I wanted trying to do is too much the spacing here with the rest of the character. So I want this whole words toe have this kind of spacing what we can do. Let's wait and zoom in. We can select the rectangle to we control block for the width of the gap Given a cola a green I went in space according to the block Now this will work for the majority of characters. However, when it comes to the are for instance, you need a judge by I So we're doing that for copy this across. This will work for the e in the are so moving that cross on the K and the A Obviously the block doesn't fit in between those. So we judge by I I will move the block assuming out holding off with the zoom too Onda now a judge it from a distance to see if this looks nice, which it does, so that's the turning complete for this particular fund. So you'll note that the raw, taped outfront simply isn't good enough because some characters just don't work well together when it's typed out. So moving on the next we're going to do exactly the CME, you'll see that the key in the A again has a distance that greater than the rest of the characters. We also have a great distance between the I and the end here, which is unnecessary. So we're gonna click upon this fun till we got a tape on we go to create outlines once again. Now, this font is now converted into shapes. So I'm gonna go ahead and good object on group so that move each one of these ships and apparently using the keyboard and the right arrow when abroad, across this key to the right onside. I want to use the left arrow to bring less e away from the are on, gonna bring in the i N g towards the end. I wouldn't use the block again if you wish, but I'm just gonna go ahead and use judge by I There we go. I'm happy with that. That's a turning complete for this font. Obviously, if you want to be make or precise, which do suggest that you dio we can use the block method again, I simply putting a block in between there and place one here on the gee needs to be moved out. There is less surface area of a G, so it's only this point that's actually fulfilling that gap so we can get away with place in the G closer. This may sound complex, but don't dwell upon it too much. Just remember, when it comes to characters that are curved, you can usually bring them closer in. So this is Marcus complete, but I'm just gonna make a slight adjustment. It's never too late to make changes. One highlight the I N g. I'm gonna bring this in slightly. With that done, this marks completion of the Kern ing for this font. So as you'll see, that's quite a simplistic process to do. The Kern ing never depend upon the raw, taped out form of the font. There's also a feature and adobe illustrator named Turning, but this Kearns in accordance with numerical values. Now this isn't any good because the computer doesn't actually know the shape of the character. It's up to you to judge by I. So that's the curling process. Make sure you do. Witten Every single log or design project turning yields a much more pleasing result, and that's what separates amateurs from local design professionals. 10. Questionnaire Review Cloudbox: sure its core hadn't take a look at the log or design questionnaire for this project. The first question is, What name do you wish to use? No log or design the answers. Cloud box. Next question. What specific tagline do you wish to use in your log or design, if any, and the answer is non. Do we have free render used up on long kiss? Characters where appropriate have stipulated law Kiss. What's your best in sector? I T. What kind of products and or services you provide? The answers. Cloud storage solutions. Where do you intend to apply? A local website? Emails, documents and merchandise? Who was your target market? 25 to 65 year olds. What kind of feel would you like Your log or to project I e. Corporate classy fun? They've stipulated modern, friendly and soft. Which of the following log or design styles do you prefer on? They have stipulated custom text, So this means we're going to go ahead and make attacks based local with some changes to sitting characters. Which of the following font styles do prefer on the stated son Sarah. All there any specific elements pitches, for example, you'd like to see in your design anything relating to the cloud storage worked into the type off Any specific elements who did not want the seeing or design anything literal related toe? I t. What? Your preferred colors. They've stated green blue, agree and black. Which colors do dislike, if any, anything too bright. How many colors would you like? The using your design understated, too. Next question. Please mention any specific existing log or design snails with you favor on of stated Skype and Soundcloud and the Lord sees to law goes, If you research them, actually feature clouds in the design. So scrolling down on the final question is, is there any additional information which it liked ad, which would help on They've stipulated. We likely use part to the Texas and icon, the use on social media, where will be pushing the brand. So please designed with this in mind? So that's a log or design questionnaire for this project. So we're gonna go ahead and plan and then produce 11. Questionnaire - Cloudbox: in the resource is you can grab a form version of the pdf question a provided that the client users Adobe Pdf reader, which is freight down Lord. They can answer every question quickly and easily by typing in their information and picking check boxes. They simply save the document. When the finished on the return of the you by email this payday Afghan be branded to suit your needs. 12. Developing the Cloudbox Logo - Part 1: So here we are an illustrator have created a new document and endless documents. I have my original brainstorming sketch which are inserted going to file on place. Next, We have three fonts that have whittled down do and these fonts around ID type because of North. Did this in the brain storming appear? Because the rounded fonts are gonna help me achieve this cloud shape, which I have appear now, this is the goal. So I'm going to review each one of these funds to see which is best for the solution. Now, looking at all these, these three looked like good contenders, each one. So the only way to find out what is going to be best is to apply the cloud to each. So I want to scroll down. I want to take a copy of each one of these highlighting all Clinton dragging and Alton shift. I'm gonna make a copy on dragging down now I'm going to go the type we're going to create outlines. So now this font has bean traced down to a point where all of these characters are now shapes. We got object on group. You see that? Now move each ship independently. Someone to begin with the first now, looking at the formation of each character, I can see here with a D in the B that we have to circular forms close to each other. Now, this could be a position for the cloud. Likewise, it could be the B in the York because we have two circular ship snacks each other here. But I think the best way to go is to use the day in the B. So I'm gonna zoom in this first law go first font. Andi, I'm going to use your razor to I'm gonna take our a portion of this day holding shift. Keeps it on the vertical. In fact on, I'm gonna delete the B. When I click on this ship, I'm gonna copy it across with Alton. Shift right. Clicking got orange. Go to transform. Rather reflect on with vertical selected, I click. OK, now this forms what looks like the bottom of the cloud. What want to do next is on a replicate the ship. I'm gonna rotate it. And when a position it's on top of these two now that makes it look like a clover. So I'm going to bring this down slightly. Now it's looking more like a cloud. I'm gonna make a copy of this. I'm doing so just so that I can make changes without affecting the original, because I may go back to the one at the top. So zooming in on this I'm not gonna select with circle on the left and using the your razor again. I'm just gonna trim it like so I'm going to do the same with the one on the right using your razor. Take out the excess. So I'm quite happy with that. The ledge abilities, Fay, it doesn't really scream a day in the B, but at the same time, if the word is read, it does make sense to read It is cloud box. So I'm gonna leave it at that and come back later and refine this if a choose to select this font. In the meantime, I'm going to see how appropriate the other funds are for the solution, because I might find that they're gonna be hell of a lot better than this one. So I come back this later if need be. But for now, we're gonna work on the next front 13. Developing the Cloudbox Logo - Part 2: So now we're going to apply the same concept to this new font So zooming in, I want to take the eraser to and holding shift. I want to take our portion of this day and I want to delete the bay going object on group and then it deletes bay making a copy of the ship with Ault unsure if the drug one across right click transform reflect with vertical selected click. OK, you're gonna make a copy of the ship with old and shift Dragon. A copy up, moving a curse Azula to an arrow points one way and the other the note rotation. So hold on shift two clicks Rotation. I want a place this here. See how that looks. Now we seem to have a nice, pleasing shape there and almost looks like a person standing in the middle. However, it takes away from the cloud feel Do you feel is if this could look good with a few adjustments. What I'm gonna do is I'm going to make these two ships one by going. The Pathfinder gotta make compound ship quickly expand. I don't want to zoom in to get the work I want to remove the shape on the right Now with the rectangle to I'm going to select a white. I want to click on the wall of the circle Younger point, and I'm gonna drag down this rectangle holding shift. I'm going to select the other ship so that both ships are selected and the Pathfinder panel beneath shape boards. I'm gonna click minus front. Now we have a bit here which needs to be filled in. So when is human and go to work on this? Now, I can use remove on a point to to rid of that one point on that one. No one is You amount. I want to take the rectangle to on going to drag it across here. When highlight the rectangle on the ship beneath. I'm gonna go with Pathfinder panel on the shape modes I want to click minus front. Or rather, I'm going to click in sect and at the use made with that shape. And with own shift held, I'm gonna drag over a copy. Want to right? Click Go, Teoh Transform reflect with vertical selected. I'm gonna click. OK, Andi. Now, as you can see, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that and it wouldn't be mistaken for anything else. But we're gonna go in and we're going to improve this. Andi, I'm gonna work on the bottom of this. I want to click their ship. I'm gonna draw a rectangle on and I'm gonna click minus front. So it just takes out that at the bottom there, using the pan to I'm gonna draw corner on this. Bring it out slightly. Gonna click. Make compound ship in the Pathfinder panel. Andi, I want to copy this across. Gonna transform Reflect and sure on vertical selected click. Ok, now I'm going to join these at the bottom with a rectangle. I'm gonna highlight all what? The Pathfinder panel make compound shape expand ons. I want to select the rectangle. And I'm going to draw a space in between just to see what this looks like to get more definition on the D in the B, increasing the size just soon and then sort and be more accurate on. I'm going to send of those bygone the align panel underneath the line objects Horizontal line Sander. In fact, don't. I'm going to go the Pathfinder panel. I'm gonna click minus front this now takes that rectangle out of the ship. Now it's negative space, so we have going to object on group. We have our date and we have ah B someone bring in the on the axe closer to these correctness. So here on Kern Inc earnings, adjusting each character so that it has equal distance to the next, especially important when you design and law goes a consist only of text on. Likewise, it's important as well for any kind of law goal which features text. So that marks completion of this option. I'm now in a Guan to the third front and see what we can make fat. 14. Developing the Cloudbox Logo - Part 3: so moving on to the last front, I'm gonna bring this down, make a copy of this, and I'm gonna take a look of the font because so far we've used the same characters on the two previous fonts to create the cloud. Now we just need asking myself if there's anything I can do differently for this font because, as you'll see, it's composed very differently. We have an L, which curves out. We have an X, which is different, even the exes rounded. So I'm looking for opportunities here. Where could perhaps put the cloud? Could it be made up of the sea that's on possibly this El could be made up of the X and the or, for example, so I couldn't mess around with this object on group, and I could play around with each character moving across with C across the seafood and make any kind of cloud ship. It might be a far cry, but it's always worth trying. There's nothing wrong with using a D in the b Asper, the original idea, but something different would be perhaps beneficial. Could we make perhaps something on top of here if we make a Hoff ring. Place it on top of here. No, that doesn't work. So I think we're actually gonna be resorted to using the D in the Bay Asper the previous. So I want to use them magnifier, Zoom to Andi. I'm going to use the razor on. I'm going to take out the portion of the D as we did before. Delete the pay. I'm with you on shift. I'm gonna copy on across right click transform reflect and sure on vertical is selected. Clicking. OK, now I'm gonna create a copy of this. I want to rotate it as before. I want a place just on top moving it slightly. Not just enough to be perfect. We're just seeing how it looks. I'm gonna zoom outs to judge that from a distance. Now, I think that we have something here, but it's gonna need adjustment as before moving us up. I'm gonna group those two make compound ship would expand. That makes them a single shape soon again with a rectangle to I want to pull out a rectangle in the past five in the panel. But if she ate more words, I wanna go to end the sect and I'm gonna work on the shape here. See him again. I want to select with the delete on a point to I don't want to leave this on a point. Also gonna delete this one. Here, pull out a rectangle. I'm gonna highlight the other shape Pathfinder panel I'm going to go to minus front. I'm gonna zoom out, copy the ship. Cross right click. Transform reflect and sure on vertical selected clicking. OK, holding shift. I want to join these and I want to do about turning. Bringing the characters in equal spacing to my best judgment doesn't have to be perfect cause we're just judging the sea. Which font is the best? Now I'm happy with this now. Although the cloud does look a little bit like a clover, as mentioned previously, it's a consistent style. That's to say that the top of this cloud is consistent with all the shapes around the chips and saw this stuns a strong contender. But we'll see them all together shortly and will decide from there which one? I'll take on to refine and finalize 15. Cloudbox Logo Refinement: So here we have the chills and design. I'm gonna copy Lex with Alton shift. I'm gonna work on the bottom on. If anything happens down here, what you don't like? I always got the top one to refer back to. Now, what I want to do is with a rectangle to I want to pull out a rectangle. So I want to select that Shipholding shift. I'm going to select the other ship, the Pathfinder panel. I'm going to go to make compound ship and expand. Just gonna color this rectangle so and see where it is on top holding shift. I'm going to select the other ship beneath the path find upon opening shaped molds are gonna go minus front that deduct that shape from the front. Now, we're looking at this. That looks okay, but I'm going to see how it looks if it do with this another way with a rounded rectangle to the rectangle tool. Rather, I'm gonna draw them out again. Andi going to make sure this is compound shape and I want to do the same again by going the pacifying the panel on going to minus front. We have this results now I'm gonna go to object on group now, I'm gonna bring this be closer to the D Hall and shift to keep it on the horizontal. And that's why I want to achieve now I'm gonna Kern this selecting the on the X I want to bring these end during the axe and further ensuring that each character has equal space between No one is you. Mount Andi review these three Now I think the bottom one stands as the final local and the reason being as it isn't too much of a cloud and a literal sense. We have the day come through and we have the B. Also, it's now became alleged ble word which reads Cloud box on the cloud is more of a subtle suggestion. So I'm happy with that now this law go is now ready for coloring 16. Cloudbox Logo Colouring: So now, on the coloring of our chores and local designed as stipulated in the questionnaire, we have blue, green, grey and black colors to play with. So let's go ahead and apply those to see what we can achieve from the cloud box level. Making a copy of this with Alton. Shift on, zooming out. I'm gonna make another copy. I will copy these again and we'll do a total of six color options. I want to highlight all I want to go. Teoh the color palette on I want to select the blue and light. Airy blew it resembles out of a cloud. Now I'm going to select uneven light of blue for the cloud the day in the bay. I don't want to use the sliders to select that and I'm happy with that. So it looks like a lighter cloud and we have the text shining above it. But at the same time, the text isn't too dark or too light. Next, I'm going to try Green selecting a green from the spectrum. Andi using the slide as just for some minor adjustment. I want to try this with the blue selecting a blue from the spectrum and I quite like that Blue was It is. I want to keep it like that. Now I want to select all I want a slight degree she using a slight I'm just bringing down the black. I would introduce a little bit of science just to break it out off the the mundane and a little bit magenta. I want to keep it that now, when a color, the cloud different color Now I don't want it to be a great cloud, cause a great cloud is a rain cloud and that's that's not the kind of mood or want to be setting for a brand. And so I'm going to make this a nice blue as before. So it looks like a cloud you might see on a sunny day. So I'm gonna go ahead and use a spectrum again and the quiet like that I want to adjust it . I want to select the gri. I'm gonna bring that down slightly in the black so onto the next I want to try agreeing again. So selecting one from the spectrum, I want to get a different green compared to last time. Help you with that again I'm going to call of the cloud different color, and it's gonna be a blue. And it has to be a light blue because no other colors going to give me the impression of a a sunny day I think like green could be improved its little to drop next. I'm going to select the blue now. That was nice. Just touched upon a nice blue there selecting the cloud again. Actually, I'm going to keep this as it is, and I'm going to do another version. I'm gonna match this with the eyedropper and deal version has a different color cloud. Again, I'm gonna make this a light blue. That looks nice just for the hell of it. I'm gonna create another version using that looks good on for the cloud. Shouldn't make this later. Yes, I quite like that. And off those six, I'm going to make a decision. So after revising these have decided that this local is the one that I'm going to finalize . But before I do so I want to try something. So, taking a copy of this down, I'm taking another. You'll see that in every design, every color scheme that we've applied the cloud is one color, and the text is another. So instead of that being the case, I'm going to make the word cloud one color on the word box, another color. And now we're going to see if the cloud is strong enough to shine without having to be emphasised in its own single color. So now, as you'll see, we have the word cloud, which is prominent on the word box. As you'll see, that cloud symbol is actually strong enough to shine through without having a big colored single color. So that done. I'm very pleased with his typographic log or design, which represents the final for Cloud box. 17. Cloudbox Logo Review: So here we have the final three locals. The one on the left I feel is a little bit to fend isn't heavy enough. I could have play like a kind of bald to it, but I don't think that's gonna work. The D and the B doesn't stand out enough on separating the clouds. Just makes it kind of lose weight. Furthermore, so I want to leave that one out to the one on the right shares the roof. Same kind of style is the one on the left. The board very rounded fonts. Ah, feel like the cloud and this design flaws very well. That's to say that it shares the curves of the actual font itself. Now the one in the middle has a one of chosen because this is a nice bald fund. Stands out. I am going to make in addition or rather, a subtraction. I'm going to bring those that Dean be closer together. So it's it is a more tired the unit. Once that's done, I hope have a police and solution on the local for cloud box, which is ready for coloring 18. Questionnaire - Goinstall: So here we have the log or design questionnaire. What named us? She used your log or design. The company name is called Gordon Stall one word. What specific tagline do you wish to see in your logo design? If any, non. Do we have free Renee used up? Unluckiest Current is where appropriate. Open law Kiss as you see fit. Was your business sector software What kind of products? A. Nor services do you provide on their provide Update Management software. Where do you intend to apply your local website and e mails? Who was your target market? 25 to 50 year olds scrolling down. What kind of feel would you let your long war to project? The answer is serious, modern and clean, which the following styles do prefer and they have stated custom text. Which of the following font styles do prefer on the state? It sounds serif scrolling down. Are there any specific elements? Pitches. For example, you like seeing your design. Please use your best judgment off any specific elements you do not want to see in your design. Pixels of data. What your preferred colors. Gray and green. Which colors do dislike If any blue. How many colors would you likely use in your design to please mention any specific existing laws or design styles, which you favour? They've stated ESA And who? Lou scrolling down the final question. Is there any additional information you like it at? Which would help and they've unsaid. We'd like the design to be clean and modern, avoid in emphasis of being too techie or futuristic. So that's the local designed questionnaire for this project and will be using this as a basis to brainstorm, and then we'll get the work. 19. Goinstall Logo - Part 1 - Brainstorm: So here we have the brainstorm for going stole. You see that written Gordon stall in the center of the page, and I've also written management because management is the type of soft away the Gorn stall specializes in. And so management might be an aspect of how I'll go about designing the logo so have separate going store into words gone and stall on the left hand side. I have words associate with Gore on the right hand side. I have words associated with Install at the bottom have the words associated with management. So to the left, the words that have associate with Gore start I've written down Gore button race on, have branched off from race to jot down flag speed also, and I've branched off to north, down trail, a speed trail. I have also stated that on my consider metallic text to depict movement so moving on the management of Noah down hands because hands something in the hands signifies management ownership. I've also note down custom control, convenience schedule and of branched off from schedule to north down time on the clock, and I've also been accrued little, drawing their of a clock to save it My fit in somehow in the local Later on on the right inside have my words associate with install. The first is disk stroke each day, day hard disk drive So might in court with something like that into the local using the lettering I have down Lord not down on next that I've and next to that of doodled two arrows of different styles pointing downwards to signify the download. So this might be something I'll in court bred into the text. It does look lightly at the moment that something I am keen explore Nexus software because their software, its software orientated, it's going to install updates. Next is a cog. Now I've been a crew drawer of a cog there. As you can see, this might be something on court brief, but as mentioned, the down Lord Arrows that I was pointing downwards is the prime idea that I'm keen on exploring. So without further ado, let's go on the illustrator and get the work 20. Developing the Goinstall Logo - Part 2: okay on oil on X fund, which is the all Capitals. To make a copy of this, I'm going to use out on shift and drag it down. Now for this design. I'm gonna explore the cog, and I'm gonna put the cog in place of the old. That's the obvious position. So that's the one I'm going to use. So we're gonna replace the whole with a cog. Now, the cog isn't such a novel idea. So it really isn't a favorite above that of the arrow, but something I'll explore non, the less just to see the results. And they give may some contrast against the arrow concept. So I'm going to zoom in on this slightly. I'm going to highlight it. I'm going to go the type, create outlines, object on group. I'm just going to separate these characters so we have mawr room to play because they're a bit bunched up in the moments. I don't want to go ahead and draw a simplistic cog with a rounded rectangle to all rectangle to which I think will select. I want to draw a rectangle. I want to see him out with the rotate to I want to set the rotator point down here driving down on with Alton Shift. I want to click on this. I want to drag to the right to make a copy of that. Then I'm going to use command and D to make a copy of that again. You see how it repeats by the same angle. So we have a 45 degree angle, and then this has taken the next to 90 degrees. So command and D come on de again. You see how it completes the full circle Next up, I'm going to use the lips. I want to draw a circle. I want to make sure there's no Phil in the swatches panel. I want a slight known I'm clicking stroke box. I'm going to assign a stroke here in the stroke panel off 40. I want to select all these rectangles and one about the Pathfinder panel I want to select, make compound ship from the options and I'm gonna click expand, gonna select the circle Gonna goto object flattened transparency So it's no longer creditable. Drag this over here when highlight all And the Pathfinder The align panel, rather beneath Elaine objects I wanna click horizontal line center. So aligns those on the vertical. But I want to click Vertical alliance center, so aligns oars on the horizontal. Now I'm going to select another circle on the lips. Draw that out. I'm gonna place this over the top. I'm gonna do that process again in the align panel beneath the line. Objects holds on the line center than vertical Alliance Center. Selecting that circle, Andi, the group. The singular shape of all the rectangles beneath. I'm going to go the Pathfinder panel on. I'm gonna click minus front. Rather, I'm gonna click in the sect so it leaves May with the ship. As you can see, the Kochs coming together just to give it a little bit more detail. I'm gonna put a ring and side of this cock. I want to try a ring and I'm gonna try a solid circle. Let's try the solid circle First, get these lines in the same way. Vertical ally in center and ah put no fell analyst sign a stroke moving the weights of the stroke up on the stroke panel. Now compare these two to see which is best now. I like this one for its simplicity. So I want to highlight all these ships. I'm gonna go the Pathfinder panel. I want to click the options and then click make compound ship expand to make this singular shape. So it's a lot more easier to handle, So I want to go back to the Gorn Stole tax. I want to take this. I'm gonna put it in the place off the old when Space it out slightly. Assuming in. So there we have it. The rough concept of the cog version featuring uppercase letters are now gonna proceed to explore. The final font will go back with this deceive. It's appropriate to begin the refinement process. If not, it'll be disregarded and we'll work with the chores in front. 21. Developing the Goinstall Logo - Part 3: Okay, let's get the work on the last front. I'm gonna make a copy of it as before, with all and shift. And I'm gonna drag one down with this funds. I'm gonna actually make the word go a bald just to give it emphasis. So I'm gonna highlight the word go. I wanna go Correct panel. And I want to select bold. I'm also gonna try heavy. See how that looks. That looks nice. So I'm going to keep that. I'm gonna make a copy of it again. Just so north. Revert. Andi, I want to select that. I'm going to tape in May nous 40 into the tracking just to see how that looks on. And I'm going to select that again. I'm gonna go to type. I'm gonna go to create outlines. You see, the tracking was just to reduce the gaps in between each character. I do want it to be close, but it still needs an element of Kern ing. It got object on group like space. These a little more evenly. Doesn't have to be perfect cause this is just the rough local. To get an idea of the concept and the concept for this is again. I'm going to use these two owls as the stem of an arrow. Someone ago, right? And and I'm gonna execute that idea. Now I'm going to select these two owls. I want to drag him down. Just show in the touch the arrowheads to the bottom. Now I'm gonna select the filled ensuring there's non and the swatches panel on. I'm gonna select stroke, and I want to sign black to it. Selecting the pen tool. I'm now going to draw out the arrowhead of the bottom of the stem of the left. L so clicking. Hold and shift to keep it on the horizontal. We're drying out here. I want to click on a I'm gonna click here slightly past the center point because I want this to intersect with one on the right on in the stroke panel. I'm gonna click up the wit, the increase, this I want a mattress as close as possible to the width of the stem off the l on that will do. For now, we can make alterations late. If this is the chores and local now I'm going to make a copy of this with all on shift held on when a click and drag one across. Right click transform reflect vertical selected. Okay, now on the whole shift to keep it on the horizontal. And I'm gonna put this in place. I want to select the other one. I'm gonna group it by going object group. Andi, I'm going to zoom in and just justice Aro had ever so slightly It doesn't have to be perfect again. That will do. So we can now judge this concept now. I'm not really happy with the arrow. I think it looks too sharp and doesn't have enough stale in comparison to the first log or that I developed. And I don't even think any kind of tweaking will make this better. But I'm gonna go ahead and try, so I'm gonna make a copy of this on. The first thing I notice is that although this is rough, I do want to get a better idea. Someone to reduce the thickness of the stroke. I want to sign 5.5 to the wit, and I'm gonna bring it down just so it's equal distance from the A as the L is from the side of the and I'm gonna bring down both stems to join the arrowhead. So I want to judge based upon this version, I want to select all I want to go to object. Flattened transparency. Saw that these strokes on along that creditable on. I'm gonna judge just log. Or as it stands on this favorite, the first looks like the strongest contender, but will go on to review all three side by side. 22. Refining the Goinstall Logo: So here we have the chills and log or design, and now it's time to refine it. The first thing I want to do is make this are all perfect. So I'm going to zoom in and I'm going to start refining that. You see that? Both halfs entirely different. We have different glitches because the bottom arrowhead spaced off center. So I'm going to go in, Andre, rectify these problems. When I goto object on group, I want to move this across on his amounts. I'm gonna make sure these two owls are one singular ship. I go in the Pathfinder, Mick, Compound chip expand. I want to make sure this is a single shape. By doing the same, make compound shape expand. I'm going to ensure that these two ships, the two owls, which is now a singular ship on the arrowhead, is a lying. So I'm gonna go toe a line underneath the line objects hose on the lines and that shift that that ever so slightly. I want to move this down. I was so slightly just experiment assuming in and it's gonna move this down. A tiny amount does not affect the design too much And now I'm gonna go ahead and select both e ships. I'm just gonna go the Pathfinder and select make compound shape before do that. However, I'm just gonna make a copy. So if we zoom out, it's just certain revert back if I make a mistake. So selecting those two ships go on the Pathfinder panel, clicking Mick compound ship and expand, so zooming back in the arrow will continue to make changes. Okay, so I'm going to use, delete and appoint tool. I'm gonna delete this on a point here. Now, I'm going to try and achieve a nice flowing curve from this horizontal line here on rounds to meet this path down here. So I'm going to use the pan tool for less. Click on the anchor point holding shift. I'm going to create a horizontal line. I want to create a curve here. Andi, I want to join the puff here. Now, I'm quite happy with that. So I'm gonna select call when you got the Pathfinder panel, make compound shape, and I'm gonna click expand. Now. I see a little problem here, so I'm gonna rectify this. Andi, I'm going to go to delete and appoint to. I'm gonna delete the sound a point here clicking on that. And I'm gonna use a direct selection tool to use this handle to manipulate this curve. It's now being effected after a deleted the young appoint. Okay, with that done, I'll be ready to make another copy. But before I do that, I just want to ensure that this lying down he has the same thickness is the stem of the out . I don't believe it is. So I'm gonna take a rectangle, Color it red. I'm gonna size it up with this, and I'm gonna drag us down here. I don't want to compare. The size is you'll say it's slightly are quite considerably smaller. So I'm gonna go ahead and increased the thickness of this line, and I want to do it like this, using the pen tool I want to click up here. I want to follow the course off that rectangle. I'm gonna click down there, Andi drawing kind of rectangle ship holding shift and selecting the shape behind. Got the pathfinder panel click, make compound shape and click. Expand on. We're left with that. I can now go Heads on. Delete this writer rectangle down here now. I'm ready to replicate the half cross. So holding Altan shift. I'm gonna make a copy. Right Click transform reflect with vertical selected on a click. OK, now, this copy and across is just to see what it looks like. I might do this several times over to get it the perfection. So the next thing I want to do is is to add some curves to the negative space inside here. So zooming in with the pen tool I want to click up here. I want to click down here on the path pulling out a curve. I'm clicking inside the shape. That looks nice. No, I'm gonna click down the bottom, clicking here, clicking across on both paths. I'm gonna pull out a curve that clicking into the ship on ceiling. That ship and I was coming out selecting all ships. Got the Pathfinder panel clicking the options. Make compound ship clicking, expand using the rectangle and go over the ship until the pink line appears. This denotes the perfect Santa, slighting both these ships in the Pathfinder panel. I can go to intersect now. I can copy across this with Alton. Shift right mouse click transform reflect with vertical selected I click. OK, aunt holding shift to keep it on the horizontal and move this across until the pink in a sec lion appears, which denotes a perfect sander. Andi, that marks completion of this arrow shape Now for the curling and arrangement of the arrow to see fucking make this any better. So I'm willing me a copy of this, and I'm going to start on, rearrange things and start turning process. So selecting the g gonna move the sentence slightly? I do want this law Gotta be area. So a deal. One quite a bit of space between each character, but not too much. And each one does need to share the same distance. So using the keyboard, arrow keys are gonna just each character. Now, the next thing I want to try is the positioning off the arrow. I wanna make sure this is one single ship I gonna make compound ship and expand. Now, if that was put down there, we kind of lose the owls. So what I'm going to try next is an extension off those Els. I want a position. Let's hear using the arrow keys on the keyboard, and I'm going to draw a rectangle up from the stem. You see that? I'm much in the top of the tea. That's the sender line. I want to do the same for this stem of the out and a much the height of the T on, Of course, the L to the left on site. That wasn't perfect by the looks of things. So we'll just move this in, and that's it done. So now I'm gonna make the Arrow compound ship by selecting all of it. Ships going the Pathfinder panel clicking Mick Compound Ship and clicking expand. Now comes a time when Anita judge both of these locals, which functions on both scores of reading, go and stall legibly whilst displaying the arrow most prominently. I think you'll agree that it's the bottom one that's going to be taken to the final stages of the coloring process. 23. Goinstall Logo Review: So here we have the final round up of the Gorn stall Law goes The first local worked very well indeed. The idea came together beautifully due to the tail of the Els flipping. One of the Els result that in a shape which took on the form of a narrow and all that was left, was to apply a short rounded cup stroke and copied across. The result are or flaws perfectly with a style of the font with some life tweak, and this could potentially be made to look even better. Besides it down What arrow? ACOG was also something quickly sketched in the brainstorm. I was keen to see how all capitals would work for the brand but the l shapes of the second log or were incompatible with that goal. We're gonna form some kind of crude arrow if one of the els was reversed. But overall, the fonts too heavy and the cog is an overused cliche. This law, gorgeous, tended to satisfy some curiosity. The final fund is promising. I especially like the floor of the G. In the contrast of the bald and thin taxed mix, it looked striking. This would be a very professional tax. Best log on It's on right. However, the stale of the font mix incorporation of a good looking arrow a problem. The may be a solution here, however, the Shia effectiveness of the first log or doesn't make that a worthwhile venture. And so it's the first law goal, which makes a grade, and it's this local, which will be taken to the next stage to refine. 24. Colouring Goinstall: So let's get into the coloring. The client stipulated that we have green and gray colors to work with on they had, like, only a maximum of two colors and their logo design. So let's take this. I'm gonna put it up here. We're gonna replicate it by holding Ault and shift. I'm going to do that again. I'm going to do that again for these three to make a total of six color options. Now it makes sense to have the word gore in green Truth the traffic life colors. So I think we're going to stick with that idea. And I've decided the install is gonna Ramin agree. However, we do have that arrow in the install. So this, too could possibly being matched up with green so that it kind of suggests that the Down Lord is instant paired with the word goal. So we're going to go ahead on and apply colors, so highlight in the word go. And when it's like the green from the spectrum, it's gonna be a light green like so when highlight the wood and stole I don't want to color this blue bringing down the black slider in the cola panel like so I want to do to see him again. I want to select another green using the spectrum so that we end up with a unique color, as opposed to just copying a green above. Andi, I'm gonna color this part gray with tiny reduce ion and moving the slide off the cola panel just to make that a unique color. Andi, I want to select this arrow and I want to match that with the goal just to see how that looks. Now that does take away from the readability of install which now reads insta. So I think I'm going to stick with the idea of keeping the word and stall with the to al's . The arrow as gray and keeping the core is green. So trying another green with the word goal on this local I'm gonna move around the spectre on this time going for a yellowy green, highlighting the wood and stole on going to use the sliders again to select, agree with a black slider on. I wouldn't just a little bit of magenta, a little bit of scion just to break it out Monday in I would increase the darkness of the green. It was a little bit too light. Some have you affect a new green for this goal using the sliders. Bring up the magenta a little bit on highlighting the word and stole. Do the same again, Uh, just thes sliders. Just to give it a different kind of gray selecting. Go again. I want to select one from the swatches, and then I'm gonna use the slightest. So this is a doctor type of green selecting the word and stole on. We're getting that basically again. Why? Reducing the black slider on the color panel? I want to make this goal just a little bit lighter, bringing down the Cy on the agenda and under the last selecting a green. Now it's too blue. So we need that kind of bright green which resembles a traffic life. Andi working on the Grieg and for the word and stole. And I'm happy with thaws. So now comes the time to decide upon the final local. Now, after some consideration, I've decided that the top right represents the final local for going stole. After some consideration, I've decided that lets local Jude with bright green and it's complimented degree, not the mansion. Its design is the perfect solution for going stole 25.
