1. Intro: Hello and welcome to design a stained glass. Mandela on Adobe Illustrator with Ari North. I'm an artist, art teacher and creator of coloring books, meditation journals and surface pattern designs. This year we launched the Ari North Project Theory. North Project is a philanthropic incubator supporting creative communities through education and project based initiatives. Draw a mandala on Adobe Illustrator, draw the stained glass on the Mandela. We're gonna polish the drawing for professional appearance and then finish up the drawing completely with some color techniques and just a few moments of final thoughts. I look forward to seeing your artwork in the Project gallery. 2. Lesson 1: Set up your work space + art board: welcome to lesson one of our stained glass mandala class. Right now, we're just going to set up the art board on what will be using through this class. So the first thing we want to do is set up a new file. So we go to file new our title will be I'm gonna title this stain glass gondola letter size in inches 8.5 by 11. I generally use this particular size because it's a regular sheet of paper size for my printer, and I often print them out or send them as PDFs as coloring pages. Okay, there's the art board 8.5 by 11. So this will be the workspace. There are art board space that we will be working on. We don't need any Phil of because we're just going to start right off the bat with just drawing some strokes or lines, which you can use any color. But black is fine. Defaults on black. One point is good. So the selection tool I use that one a lot. You can use the commander of the control letters. I've just so used to going back and Ford with tools. This way that this is the way I do it. But do what you're comfortable with. You can use to draw a mouse I'm using for this particular exercise, just the most that's on my laptop. You can also use Ah, drawing tablet. I do have a wakame drop drawing tablet that I use sometimes, but for this class, we just a Moses. Fine, just the most that even comes with your laptop is good. So our selection tool whenever you need to select anything, so you'll you click. Hold drag whenever you want to select. There's our direct selection tool where you can in this case, do control or command A and that will. If you want to move specific things around, you can do that will be using the pen tool will be using the circle tool. I just called it the Circle Tool. The Ellipse Tool will be using the pencil quite a bit today to draw, and then when we'll just be doing like are loose drawings and then we'll use the direct selection tool to put the ends together. Actually, while I'm thinking about it, I like having these rounded and when I hit stroke, I like the round it effect. That's just me. And I believe that's all we're going to be using for over here right now. And to set up what we're going to need when we color in our stained glass mandala is will goto window Select color? Because what will eventually do is using the greedy int, and that will give that really nice. Stained glass color will go through a few examples of just choosing, say, two colors or even one color, but at different hues. And then maybe get into some nice, funky hippie type colors in Bohol colors and stuff like that. And what else did I want you? I did want to show you something else. Oh, yes, And then when we start, when I start to work a lot, I'll goto object. And when I want a group things together, he can hit group there. Another thing you can do so that's using the left side of the most by, you know, click or dragging. Now, if you want to use the right side of the most like a right click, you can get a lot of these tools and helpers and menus up, so that's all right now, I just go back to my selection tool. It's just something I always do. Another tool use a lot, too, is the free transform tool. You'll see me clicking on that Just to me in my brain creates this easy way of moving things around, and that's tends to be the tool that I like a lot. So now that we've set up, the art board will start in the next lesson to actually get into certain steps different steps that will be using to build our Mondal a so I will meet you in lesson to. 3. Lesson 2: Drawing a mandala: Hello and welcome to a lesson, too. In this lesson, we're going to start our drawing of arm, Mandela. So I'm going to go over to the Ellipse stool, click it and then just come over my board and click. It's gonna ask me how big I want my circle to be. Because I know that the with of my pages 8.5, I think I'm going to try for a seven inch circle and then enter or okay, how I want this. Let me Let me just sent to this for center of the circle. I will be eventually removing this circle. I'm just using it right now as a bit of a guideline where I want those smaller circles to go. So let's see here. I want to click that I right clicked, go down to transform. I want to make a slightly smaller circle inside, so I'm going toe scale right now. If I click copy or okay, I will get 100% so on identical circle to what I've got now. But I want one. That's about 95% smaller. If I clicked, okay. It would just make my existing circle 90% or 95% smaller. If I click copy, it leaves my original circle and copies a new circle to make it 95% smaller. Okay, let me just take a peek. Good. Now I'm gonna click anywhere along the outer circle because I want to resize again. I want to keep that. And I want to make circles that are a little less than half this size. So I'm gonna go right click transform scale, which is our re sizing tool. And I'm going to Let's do 95% cause that's us just smaller than half. I want a copy. So now I've created this smaller circle. I'm gonna take that and move it up. You want to do it? One there. I'm going to move it so it touches the's second circle. The inner circle that I've made. I want to now, right, click and scale the small circle. And make that I want to make a copy of again. 95%. Great. Now what I've done is taken the circles and created these little 5% separations because when we fill the color in, you'll need tohave those a border. It'll look really pretty. So I need to now be these because I want to eventually move these all around. So I've got circle. So I clicked the small odor one. I'm going to shift hold down, shift as I click the inner circle that's taken both circles so as separately. So now I've selected both of those circles together. This is where I tend to go to group a lot in case I make an error later. I now have this item as a group. So I goto object. I hit group. So now these two separate lines act as one new entity, one new object. So even if I click just the outer circle, I could move it around and both circles will come because I've grouped them together. So let me put that sucker back there. Good. So now I want to copy this circle. Just click the circle Control or command, see Control or command V will get me a second circle. I want to move this guy down. I've got my guides on so you could see these blue lines. That tells me the alignment of what I'm working on. So this is good. I want this alignment to be exactly the same on the top as the bottom and fudge it around a little bit there. See if I click there. It doesn't quite go through the middle There. You see that? See how that's off. So I want to move this over a little bit. There's the center. Where's the center? Are the centers on? They're both Okay, so that's a nice that center. Now we're going to start rotating to create the odor mandala. So because of group this where no matter where I clicked, both those circles will be selected. So I'm going toe click the top circle, hold my shift key, hit the bottom circle. So now I'm going to go over the object. I want a group these together. So now these two circles, I guess all four circles are as one object, right? Click transform. And I want to start rotating this. So I'm gonna hit rotate, and I think I'm going toe want these each to move 45 degrees first, I'm gonna show you 30 degrees and then I'm gonna show you 45 so I'll show you 30 degrees and I hit Copy. We won't be using 30 degrees, but this is an option. Now I want this to continue. I want this to repeat until it fills the whole circle. So instead of select copy and rotate 30% again, what I can do while it's all selected, I hit control or command D and it'll repeat what I just did and then do it again. Control, Command d keep doing it. And there we go. One more That looks really pretty. Look at that. Isn't that really pretty? But for this, we're going to work in 45 degrees. The reason being is we're going to start filling in little stained glass objects and this is very pretty. But if I added a stained glass component to it, it would look very busy. So now I want to erase what I've just done. So I'm gonna do control. Zed controls Ed. So it's just erasing what I've just done. Okay, so I've come back to that selection I'm going to right click, go to transform again. I want to rotate. But this time I've decided I want to rotate it 45 degrees and I want to copy it to remember if if I just hit okay, It would take the selected object and move it 45 degrees. But I want to remain. Keep that there and copy and control de to repeat it. Control DE to repeat it. So here we have the first part of our mandala. Right now, it's very pretty. And you can color. You could print this up and then color it in with whatever medium you like. Or you can use the color panel over here and fill in. But we are going to go to the next step, which is adding stained glass. So I will meet you in less and three when we start to add the stained glass. 4. Lesson 3: Drawing stained glass: welcome to lessen three in this lesson, we're going to start toe, add our little bits of stained glass. We want to work a little closer, so I'm going to do control, plus plus plus and grab my little hand to dude over here and just work a little closer, OK? All right. Now, what I want to do is add these teeny little bits of shapes with this type of shape will be using more rectangles, squares and triangles with little rounded edges. I want to fill in this spot. I want to fill in this spot, and I want to fill in this spot. I just need these three areas filled because when we dio our selection and start rotating it, it will automatically fill these one, 23 areas will fill the 12 and the three area down there, and until it comes all the way back and feels fills it completely. Okay, so I want to go to my pencil tool. I'm just using my mouse again. That's all. My laptop. You can use a drawing pot or you can use a regular most's. And I think I want to fill about five items in here, So I've just I've clicked. I'm holding down the mouse of clicked, and I'm just moving it around and make my general shape. Don't worry if you've got little extra things, like hiccups there and there because we will be fixing those a little bit later. Now I'm going to start over here and I want something, maybe a little different. I will do kind of a rounded rectangle. We're around. It's square. What these air going to look like when they're all done is as if you found these little found pieces off glass. Let's do a triangle hero to smaller triangle. Going to come in and edit it later and lexical have more than five items, which is fine. There is a rule of odds. People like to use odd numbers of items. It just helps the eye. It's more pleasing to the eye. If you have an even number of items, the I doesn't know where to settle rest. But if you have an odd number of items, your brain tells your I that there's a center point, so it would have about 456 so we will have odds. Seven. That guy to the rate is a little wonky, but we will fix him up. Okay, that looks good. So that's our first section. Let's fill our second section. Ah, I'm staying away from the sites That's access the lead part off stained glass when people put leading like, the old fashioned days. I'm just eyeing it here. I'm winging it. If I finish it and don't like what I have done, I just simply click on backspace to a race. What if I got here? 3456789 So well up 10. That's fine. That's fine. Looks good. Okay, just take a peek. I like it. I'm going to move now to our third section, select my pencil tool again and start drawing. I'm just gonna put three items here. Make things a little larger, is interesting. This is very interesting. Quite often, when I'm making one of these mandalas on Illustrator as I'm doing it, I'm thinking I don't like this. It'll it's not going to turn out. And then, surprisingly, once I start to complete the project actually looks really good. So that's why I don't stop. And if I don't love what I'm doing, I still don't stop. I go right to the end to see how it turns out. You never know how things are going to turn out. OK, so here is our final filling in of our stained glass objects. In the next lesson, we're going to start cleaning this up, so it it's got a crisp professional look, and then we'll go on to rotate it, and then we'll color it in to give it that beautiful steam glass look meet you in the next lesson. 5. Lesson 4: Polishing the drawing for a professional look: hello and welcome to Lesson four. In this lesson. We're going to tidy up all the little hiccups and lines in our sting glass. So I go toe got my selection hit, select it, and I'm going to select everything. Go to stroke. And I like having the rounded edges. I know I mentioned that before. The reason being when you start connecting the edges, they look prettier when they're around it because you might make an error in where the ah lines connect. And then it will be like a squared error instead of around it there. I'm going to do control and plus really bringing it in really bringing it nice and close. Okay, so I'm going to see if I I'm just hovering my mouse over the object and it's his path. So path, path, path, path. But then I know that's gonna say anchor so I can manipulate these anchors path and then anchor anchor, And then I know that's gonna be a path and anchor. I want to remove this anchor. It doesn't need to be there, so I go over to pen, click, pen, hold and click. I can go to minus and delete an anchor point. So I've got my minus and I can go over here and just click and that's gone. It's disappeared, which now creates a smoother looking line. I don't mind that there, that looks good. And then my o c d. Makes me want to put it back. Okay, so that that looks OK. I like that here. I could tell I've got the anchor there. That one doesn't look terrible. Okay, this one. You see, there's a little bit of Ah, an overhang. There's a little bit of a bump there. So what I can Dio is grab my direct select tool. I've got my path. And I could move my path over to my anchor, going toe klik with my mouse, and I could move this around so I could make that anchor move around. So I'm going to take that anchor and join it till it's with the other anchor. There is still a bit of a point there, so I can go to the handle and manipulate it, make things a little rounder. There we go. So I'm pleased with that. Okay, This one same type of deal, it's not perfectly together, so I go to my direct select tool. I've got my anchor so I can move it up. I'm just moving it up as an exaggeration to show you and then move it back down to the other one. That's fine over here. This has got a lot of stuff going on. So I want to remove that extra anchor. So I go over to my pen tool the minus so I can delete an anchor point and come over here till I find my anchor just hovering over it and then click. And that anchor goes away. I have to change it back. Okay? Direct. Select. Find my anchor. I could take it off so I can see where the other anchor is. Put it back on. I don't mind that. I'm gonna with the handle, twisted a little bit. Okay, Good. Now this one again. Just taking that off so I can take a look and bring it back down so it meets it. That looks OK. That one's OK. So see how they've just tidied up a little nicer there. A little nicer over here. Okay. Here. Again. Moving that off. Move it on Over here. There's the anchor Whoa. So when you do something funky like I just did, I just grabbed the path instead of the anchor control Zed. I'm Canadian. I say that or Z control Z and then look for the anchor. Get control. Z will just erase what you just did. Just bring you back to this step. Prior. I'm gonna go here. So you take that anchor off. That one's not even touching. So I could just move it down. This one. See that nice, rounded edge? If I didn't, we're gonna show you I'm gonna select. And if I just had it as the regular straight edge, it ends up just looking. Just show you here. See how that like it just looks really unprofessional. Where if it was, even if I didn't correct it, the rounded edges make it look much nicer than having those straight edges. So very good. How's everything? Looking looking. Okay. All right. Direct. Select. Let's fix this guy. Pull on the anchor. Move it there. Anchor. Move it to the other anchor anchor. Adding together. There we go. Looks like I have another anchor point here that I want to get rid off. Unless that was where the increment anchor. Let's get rid of that guy. Okay, Go to my pen tool. So if you if you're not sure where the anchor is, just hover over the path. Move your most till you get to the anchor. Click anchor. Ah ha! There I was hoping this would happen so I could show you. You'll get to a point where say you remove an anchor, but it actually was. Where? The line where you need it. The line. Sorry. Got to go back here. What you can do, Grab that anchor and pull and move it to the next anchor. So I've still got that bit of that anchor over Ridge that I don't want. I'm gonna move it around till I get where I want it. Pull it. Okay, so that's a bit Yeah, that's much nicer. There have got to anchors I could tell. So I'm gonna go over and take out one of them. I'll take take up this guy here. See, that's much nicer. And let's just go to our third section for a tidy up. That one looks fine. That looks fine. This one has an extra anchor, so I've got my minus one. Still, select it and take out that extra anchor. Good. Switch it back. That's just me. You don't have to and connect, so I don't think that quick connected connect. Let's see. I'm thinking, that's good. So I'm doing control minus minus minus so I can look at it. There we go. This is a nice even amount of stained glass. I quite like that. Okay, I will meet you in the next lesson when we start filling in the entire mandala with the stained glass. 6. Lesson 5: Finishing the drawing: hello and welcome to lessen five. In this lesson, we're going to take the stained glass sections that we create it. We're going to select them all, will group them so they act as one object and then we will start rotating them. So they fill in all these other sections from. I'm gonna try doing this from way out here. I'm going to select with my selected selection tool. Hold my shift key. Move my cursor anywhere towards the next one When it's on the line, Select. Keep holding shift, select. Select some just tapping my mouse. Select. Select some just selecting all of the stained glass bits that we create it. I have my shift key continually selected. I'm doing this slow so I could make sure that I do have all my lines. Okay, Everything selected. I take my hand off the shift. I move over to object. Click, object Click Group. So now this is all groups. So if I make an error, I can come back. Teoh it all being a group without having toe start all over again. When we moved our circles around, we did it at 45 degrees. So we're going to do that again. But what I need is I need to put this one down here, so I'm gonna hit anywhere, and I'm going to control sea to copy it. Control V. And then I want to bring it down to mirror the bottom. Exactly. So I'm just eyeballing it, manipulating it into place, make sure that nothing is touching an edge. I could work closer if I wanted to buy control. Plus and I normally would if I was creating this for a coloring book. But I want you to see how I'm doing it. So I want to make sure. So this all looks pretty good on me. See, just making sure. So I'm what I'm doing is I'm eyeballing to see if this and this piece of stained glass look about the same. I believe that's it. OK, very good. So now I am going to control minus, so we can see good. Looks likely a young yang. So what I'm gonna do now? Because this is all group together and this is all group together. I'm just going to click on any piece of stained glass from the top, hold my shift key down Just move my mouse and just click any of the stained glass on the bottom. I'm gonna group this together Object group while it's still select it. I'm going to now rotate it so it fills the entire mandala. And this is where you see where things are working out because at this point is still question. Is it where I want it to be? And then when you start feeling things out, it looks great. Transforms I right, clicked to get my transform menu. I want to rotate it. It's at 45 degrees. It just defaulted to what I did lasts, which was 45 degrees. I want to copy it and it's filled in the next section. Instead of doing copy and paste for every one of them, I could just hit control or command de it feels the next one. And then let's fill that last one. Let's take a look at it. There we go. So here is the I'm going to say the almost complete it because we do need to start taking out those circles. The guidelines circles that we use those air just guidelines for now, so this is more or less the complete Mondal A If you were to use it as a coloring page, um, you could just print it off because we've selected the letter size, so could just be used as a coloring page. If you want to create a coloring book. If you wanted to add, actually, I might even do. You can add maybe a little bit to these areas. I won't do that now, actually. But if you want to go right ahead, and I think that's what I'm going to leave for now, and I will meet you in the next section when we start to add color. So I mean in the next lesson. 7. Lesson 6: Coloring techniques: hello and welcome to a lesson six. In this lesson, we're going to start adding color to our Mandela, as I mentioned before. If your goal is to create coloring books to sell them on Amazon or in boutiques or art galleries, you can just leave it like this and print it off. But if you want to create a very colorful Mondal a on illustrator using the color palette from illustrator and then use it perhaps in a social media post, or to create very artistic designs for any type of use for yourself, then we are going to add that Now what? I'm gonna do a select star select tools there. Right now, we have no Phil. We have black stroke and I'm going to click and drag. So I've selected everything to create the stained glass. Look, we're going to use Grady int, but I want to show you what happens if we don't use greedy int. If I were just to click OK over here, a stroke click stroke and click on that nice light blue. What I end up with with is a very pretty blue. If I Let's add some fill color. Let's add um, Greenville by green Phil Everything fills in green. That's the looks really nice to, you know, you've got there the blue and the green, so that looks nice, But what we're going to dio is greedy int So I'm gonna go back to where he was by just controls Ed controls ed and controls. So now I've got my black stroke and no, Phil, I'm gonna leave it black and white and gray, just to show you as our as our starting point so select all gonna drag, it'll select everything. And now I'm just going to hit the greedy int bar here the slide ingredients slider click, and it automatically adds ingredient, fill the Phyllis, the coloring in part. And we still have our stroke or our line which remains blacks. Let's take a look. So that looks really pretty. That's quite nice. We are going to be removing some of these lines soon, so that's quite nice. But let's try something different. Let's try some blues. So if I want, what I'm gonna do is go up to my selection tool there, go up to this light blue click, drag some dragging it down anywhere along this line, but I'm gonna drag it close. And then these little I call them paint pots and pots of paint. I could move it there. So now I've just added that one color. Let's see what happens here. So we're gonna select it all, Uh, that didn't work there. There we go. And let's see what it looks like. So you seek it. Start getting this white bit here is reflected in there. So let me just move this over. You could. You're starting to get a bit of that stain glassed appearance. Let's add some more blue. So click. Bring it down. We should actually selected first. Okay, so now I'm gonna add a little bit more blue baby there. That a purple so you can see quite a difference at a purple. Very good. So there you go. You could see it. How? It's a little different. Let's do something funky. So we're gonna select at all. Let's do rainbow. So we're gonna do read Let's break. Bring that really bright red red at the bottom. So this can be like, uh, shocker colors. Let's do this deeper orange. Okay, then the next color would be yellow. Then Let's have this green and bit oven into go. Hawaiian blue is into go today and let's add a violet. Let's go there. Here we go. So we've got those shocker colors. That's cool. That's really pretty. That's nice. Okay. Or you can put any colors down here. You can see you can fill it all day. You can keep going all day. But what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna go back to the black and white. What I'm gonna do is just do one color and have a kind of ah different bit of ah, ingredients. I'm going to pick that blue. And I want to get rid of this this black. So if I move that blue all along, they're so it leaves the white there. Here we go. You see how I can play with the hue by just moving this guy? I don't Too much weight a little bit. Whites. Nice. That's your shining through factor. A B. Let me see what that looks like. Okay, I'm gonna leave this, so I'm just using one color here. But you could see how we can use 123 can use an infinite number off color on here, so I'm gonna keep this. But now what I want to do is start taking away. These lines are just so now I'm gonna select everything and remove the stroke. Take the stroke out and let's see what we're left with. Look at that. So we've created this Mondal A. It looks like the earth. A little bit of green would look nice in here too. We've created the mandala with odd just blue and white. By using the Grady int, it's creating this illusion that there's light or sun coming through. So there we go. There's our stain glassed Mondal a 8. Final Thoughts: thank you for taking this class.
