About This Class

Welcome to the Textured Leaf Drop Earrings class! If you've watched any of my other jewellery making video classes you'll already know that I like to get the most out of my tools and equipment - after all, they've cost me money so they need to pay their way! One of my favourite (yet more expensive) pieces of equipment is my disc cutter. It is very good quality but is still doing as good a job now as it did when I bought it ten years ago, but to get best value for money I like to use it for more than just cutting full discs.

This class and the Textured Leaf Drop Earrings each use one part of a pair of silver discs cut with my disc cutter and then sawn in two. As well as teaching you how to get more from your disc cutter this class will also help you to practise your piercing skills (sawing inside a piece of sheet metal) and to improve your delicate soldering skills.

This is one of a series of video classes, each one showing you how to quickly and easily make a lovely pair of earrings - sometimes two pairs - as part of my #52earrings challenge. I have challenged myself to design and film tutorials for 52 pairs of earrings in 2017, and I'd love you to join me. In each video I will show you the materials you will need, explain the tools and equipment and go through all the steps needed to create your own lovely pair of earrings. Along the way I will share with you the same hints and tips that I teach in my jewelry making classes and private tuition so that you become more confident with your techniques and design skills with each class that you watch.

This class is an intermediate class as the soldering will take patience and practice!

The equipment needed for the project is explained in the videos and also listed on a downloadable document that covers most of the tools that I will use in future earrings video classes as well so you can plan ahead! All the equipment listed can be used for a variety of other jewellery making projects.

Earrings #33 in the #52earrings challenge.

Joanne Tinley

Jewellery Designer, Tutor and Writer

I have been making jewellery for as long as I can remember, and have been passing these wonderful (and addctive!) skills on through my classes for nearly 20 years. I am self-taught and like many people I started with wire and beads. Learning how to solder, however, opened up a whole new world of jewellery making! There is something so magical about watching solder flow through a seam, joining two pieces of metal together smoothly.

My studio is in Southampton, on the South Coast of the UK. I design and make jewellery for galleries across the UK, teach regular and popular jewellery design workshops, and also offer private tuition. My jewellery design projects have been published in both UK and US magazines and books.

1. Crescent Moon Earrings - an intermediate soldering project: Hello. My name is John Tinley. I'm a jewelry designer and shooter from the South Coast UK and welcome to the present day experience class. This class is one or two that will use the same pair of discs cut from stunning silver sheet to create two different pairs of earrings. My discussion wasn't the cheap perspective equipments I report, and so I do like to get my money's worth from it. So sometimes I want just creates pieces of jewelry that circles on them. But I might use the discounter to cut circles. That will be the starting point for other shapes. On. That's a case in these two plants is I'm going to cut discs. I'm then going to cut a curve through both of them to create two different shapes. One shape is going to be used for the texture leaf drop hearings on the other shapes. A crescent moon shape is obviously going to be used in this class as well. A show you where you're getting a little bit more use out of your disk. Attar. I'm also going to show you some hints and tips for story inside studies over sheets for piercing design into the sheet, and then we're going to turn the present moons. Inter pack hoop earrings with ear wise to hook. Sean soldiered on. This class is plants. The 52 hearings challenged I set myself for 2017 designer film tutorials for 52 different sets of hearings. Have a look out for the hash tag. 52 hearings to see behind the scenes photos on Maybe catch a glimpse of what is coming next . So if you're ready to get started, that's how I look at materials and equipment that we're going to need to make the hearings . 2. Crescent Moon Earrings - materials: These are the materials that we're going to need to make the crescent moon hoop earrings going to be cutting the crescent moons out of a piece off. No 0.7 millimeters thick, stunning silver sheet. No 0.7 or no 0.8, not Puente. Being 20 gauge sheets is a good thickness for this project because we're going to be cutting holes in its we don't want to use sheet. That's a much thinner because the holes would then weaken the sheet. But we also don't want to go much thicker because then the year rings would become a little bit heavier. We're also going to need no 0.8 millimeter sterling silver around wire, and I'm going to be using that to make the ear wires that asked. Mr Materials that you're going to need for the earrings are four small jump rinks. The's jump rings are 2.5 millimeters on the inside diameter, being made from North 0.8 millimeter selling. So why aren't going to Seoul to those onto the present move on, The wires are going to attach on to them 3. Crescent Moon Earrings - equipment: These are the tools that we're going to need to make the Crescent moon hoops going to use the pencil on the circle template to help me plan out the shape of the hearings on the Sharpie to mark that planning out on the silver, the earrings will start life as a disc silver. I'm going to cut that out with the disc Attar. I'm going to hammer the punch. The discussed her with the old hammer onto us. I do that. I'm going to put the discussion on another cushion to get a bit of support and also to keep the noise down. Once the discs that cut out, I'm going to use the double sided, sticky tape two sticks together, and that will allow me, then to solve them both out together to finish off this shape. I'm going to use the jewellers sore for that on day, I'm going to support my work on the bench peg with the leather cushion underneath to catch the little bits of silver. You can go for cycling. I'm also going to use the jewellers sore to saw the pattern into the crescent moon. That's going to add some extra interests to the earrings. I'm going to need to drill a couple of holes in the silver so that I can thread sore blade through them and cut the design into the present moons. Andi, I'm going to use my bench tool for that. Obviously, a hand job would do the job just as well. I'm going to use no 0.5 millimeter drill bits as they are wide enough for the saw blade passed through the wire cutters and applies. You can see here are pretty to cuts the wire and also to shape it for the ear wires. I would have Niland your pliers, two pairs of fat nose pliers and a pair of round nose prize. Most are going to use a large wooden Tao. This is that she wouldn't punch that I use with my domain block, but the handle of it is useful for many other different things. I'm going to use that to help shape the ear wife. The hoops Once year was being shaped. I'm going to hammer it a little bit with the Planet Shing Hammer to give some added strength. Or must I do that? I'm going to support the silver on the steel bench block with the leather cushion underneath again to keep the notice down. I'm going to use the smallest hammer that you can see here, my smallest ball peen hammer to give a lovely deport hammer to texture to the earring. So we'll catch so like beautifully. Last but not least, we got some needle files. I'm going to use the flat needle file to smooth off the end of the year wire and also the tips of the crescent moon so they're not too sharp. I'm going to be using the slightly curved over needle file to help me smooth off the shapes that I'm cutting into crescent moons. This is a soldering project such also have a look, a soldering equipment that we're going to need. 4. Crescent Moon Earrings - soldering equipment: This is the soldier equipment, as I use for all of my smaller projects, such as earrings and sore pendants, everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks , soldering blocks, while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap. On top of that on. Do they form nice of my balls as I am used to decorate my projects when I need to pick up my work or to support it whilst I'm soldering? I used reverse action tweezers that you can see here and have also got a pair on a stand through 1/3 hand, and it's there when I need 12 on extra hands to help me out. The blue handled stick is a soldier pick on and that I used to push soldier move it about to make sure it it's exactly what I wanted to be. Soldier usually comes in strips or sticks. Andi, I've got three different melting temperatures here that I using combination for different projects. The soldier gets cut into small pieces or Palin's you ting. The red handles snips as I keep those little pieces in the labeled boxes that you can see do. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder so that I can tell which melting temperature they are, the more cold over they are, they're higher. The mountain temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use a flux with it. Andi, the paintbrushes. What I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work. Small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans since the same type of gas, butane gas that you use to reform cigarette lighter At the back of the picture, you can see a so cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution. Good safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flame to forward cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans it a couple oxides up before you put your work in the safety pickle, it needs to be cooled down or quenched in a pot of water. Andi, you need to put your work in and out of the safety pickle with brass or plastic tweezers. Not the stainless steel ones that I showed you before and thus, but definitely not least our have safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Look after them carefully. 5. Crescent Moon Earrings - planning the shape: in this section of the class. I want to show you how I planned out the shapes that we're going to be cutting. Remember that we're going to be cutting two discs out of something, so wish each with the disc attar on, Then be cutting or trimming a section off those cysts to form the shapes for two earrings. Although it's a crescent moon shape that will be using in this video class, the other shapes that we're going to be showing off. It's so nice. That is no point that didn't go to waste. So I'm going to use that in a textually for drop earrings class. So I've got a secular templates. I've got a piece of paper sketch on the pencil. Andre, this is the largest punch out of my discounter set its 25.4 millimeters or an inch in diameter on. The first thing going to do is find the whole that fits in best. That one's good, Andi, I'm going to use that draw a nice, neat circle. I could just sketch my hand on ox er and then cut that out because I got a secular template . I can use it to have a greater much neater shape. All I want to use a bigger circle. If I use a smaller one, I show you on this circles. I've really join up down here if I use a smaller circle. But he could do he wanted to And use an edge of that circle to draw a section inside is not really get me. The shape I wanted to is about a tractor shape. You might want to use that. But I want to go for a more than she'll present to be in shape. So I'm actually going to use a bigger circle. I'm going to use that one, Andi. So I'm going to do is actually as this has got some marks. Well, there, he only outside. I'm going to use those. Just tow line up with the edge of circle, so and go for okay for that? No. So this is a shape here, so we'll use the half moon on. This is the shape hands are going to be using for the attractive leaf drops. So what I'm going to do now is used to discuss, utter, to cut a disc out that shape, and then I'm going to transfer the template. I've just drawn onto that disk, and I'm going to use it to soar along this line to create my two distinctive shapes. Once you've cuts the present moon shape out, you couldn't do almost anything. You like to decorate it. You could use texture punchers. You could use a hammer. You can cut design into it, or you can leave it completely playing. It is completely up to you on this is designs like I sketched out while before. So it's song tracing papers up, which on top you can see how it's going to look. So I'm going to keep mind quite a simple design on. I'm going to drill three holes one inside each of those Lavin shapes and then use the jurists. Shortest with shapes out on the needle files to smooth fine shapes. 6. Crescent Moon Earrings - cutting the discs: Now that we've gathered the equipment of the materials, Andre planned out the shape of the silver that we're going to cut. It's time to actually start cutting. It got the 0.7 millimeters stay. So sheet on the largest cutter from my discussions set on Duthie cutter itself for the bitch that the cutters fit into itself resting on top of another cushion. Andi, first thing I want to do it is so sometimes chica chapel the side just to get the sections here coming apart. My discusses a really nice quality. Well, so I can go really close to the h of the silver. So what I'm doing is looking down the whole here, and you can see as I'm moving about the city little bit of daylight coming through. Um, pulse the service that show me that the edges, the civil aren't out of the way properly yet. Okay, so just moved in. So they are so like the house the way so I could know. Put Cuttery by Why? The other thing that makes this a really good set is that it's fucking focus for see more clearly that the cutting edge is actually sloping. So it doesn't try and punch up the whole piece at same time. She would if it was flat. It starts the cut here, and that's rights around is a much nicer Christmas cut. I stopped. That helps to be out, too. I'm cut really close to the edge I got. The bigger the disc on the thick of the sheet, the more hammering you need to do but not satisfying. So there's the first kiss on to show you how close I got to the edge, every guy. So put that in again. Move it along slightly the same again. I think I might just Dentyne. I'm not sure whether that see, uh, the protective coating, so for sheet or whether that's a sh that's being, uh, scratched or whether that's a silly, she don't itself. But I'm gonna play safe. Andi, go the other end. Avoid that Pitchess cases no longer nice and smooth. And what I do if it isn't nice and through the more it's it'll operative texture on that Peter sheet and use that for a project that needs texture that goes in your hammer and by using this old timer because they punches here, leave marks in the hammer says, is a Hamas I reserved for this type of job. I don't use directly on silver because I don't want the marks it picks up from here to go onto the silver. So again, lots of loud hammering again. Okay, one to this. It's a way I can see how close I came. So that's the start. What I need to do now is Mark on there where I want to cut. Before that, I'm going to take them together, because that way I cut through them both at the same time. So clear away the bits that I don't believe. I'm not distracted by those on like it's double sided tape because I think what backing on it. It's funny to try and remove, so going to a tape used several different methods to hold pieces of silver sheet together to allow you to cut them out. At the same time, you can just bring that together and making sure it's my thing lined up you can use would flow. Some people use other people, use epoxy glue or super goo that you have to mix together the equal parts. But whatever you do, make sure they are lined up nicely that they are pressed very touchy together. You don't want any gaps in between because your blade could get caught in those gaps. It wouldn't give you a nice, smooth cut. So just taking the time. Just a push those together to make sure us That's nice. Now, if you remember the plan that we cure out, I'm going to be using the larger circle on the circle template to draw the shape onto these . This? Yeah. So it waas, that's circled. Andi, I've got sharply now to draw that onto here. You could, of course, just cut out the paper plan that you made and stick that on to the silver. But I'm going to do it this way. Happy without that's lined up. So what I'm going to do is take us over to the bench. Paige. I like Reggie. Steaua sort of cut along that line to end up with two pairs of shapes 7. Crescent Moon Earrings - sawing: now watch the two discs stuck tightly together. Andi, I'm going to solve them. Ouch! With your sore, all the bench paid the bench practice. Going to give us makes for support. Um on and I may be cut to ouch together, Remember, because of something together with double sided sticky tape and pushed really tightly to make sure that they are firmly stuck together, because I don't want to say about it all by cutting them out together. It doesn't matter if my curve creates a symmetrical shape or two symmetrical shapes in this case, because as long as they're both the same shape, they're still going to create a lovely matching pair of earrings. Have a touch templates for this class, too fast materials. I've also attached a guide full of hints and tips to get the best out of your jewelry sore , but to go through a little bit of that with you now, I want to make that tomorrow. I want to make sure that my you're so it's nice upright, because if it's lettuce angle, then I'm not going to be cutting a nice straight line. I'm going to have more difficult from the curve It also might mean that my, um, two pieces quite the same size. They said more so, going to make sure that my work supported on here and what you'll see at some point during the cross. This is delicious. Holding onto one side I'm going to with my handsets holding onto both sides of the cut line . So that's their both supported. It is the down stroke that cuts. But I'm actually going to do up a couple of notches up so that the blade is there. Must like to slip some push and not into notch into the edge off the sheets there. Andi, I want to play to the work for me. I would hear this kind of sound. E. I don't want to hear this. I hate that. It means I'm putting too much pressure on the saw blade on and celebrate with them. That should be more likely to break. I want to do the work for me, so I see me blowing the silver actually cut lying a fair bit. It does tend to hang about a little bit more when I'm using too sticky tape, but away we go. Oh, - so we've got two pairs of shapes there still set together, cause I made sure that there was double sided sticky tape across the back of the desks. I'm going to put this her loving your leaf shape over to one side, and you'll see them another time in the textured leaf drop earrings and are not going to continue working on the present shape to form the Crescent moon hoops. 8. Crescent Moon Earrings - drillling: I want to cut or pierce the design into theme to present moon shapes at the same time, so I still got them stuck together with double sided, sticky tape. I've also puts in double sided tape On the back of the template. I trimmed that after tracing paper a little bit more closely, I put in double sided, sticky tape onto the back of that. So that's now stuck on one side off the two pieces off silver on. What I need to do now is drill a hole in each of those that a lot in shapes on dime, then going to pass the sore blade through each hole in turn toe piss the design out. So it assumed in a little bit closer, saying, Let's get a better view of what I'm doing rather than that of you. The whole of the drill on what I'm going to do is first of all, line the shapes up underneath the drill bit and then set the drill bit going. I do obviously have to make sure so I'm not too close to the edge is the shapes that I'm cutting out. But there was a little bit of room for error in the shapes of actually may have noticed, color the shapes in with a Sharpie so that they're going to be a lot clearer than just pencil outlines when it comes to storing. - So we get three hose drilled in one of the shape so I can start soaring. One thing to point out is that I did have to be extra careful with the with the drill when I sawing through because I was sawing suit to piece of sheet has shut sewing through, in effect, at least 1.4 millimeters because you want to pieces of not 0.7 millimeter sheet. Onda Secretary pounds the plastic coating and a piece tracing paper on. That's quite a distance for the drill to go through. So I did have to make sure that I took it slowly on, didn't try and force the drill bit through because I obviously didn't want the drill bits to break. Now this job is done, I can get on with soaring 9. Crescent Moon Earrings - piercing: Now that the holes are being drilled, it's time to sort pierce out the design inside the crescent moons. I've actually cut one of the shapes out so that you can see it a contrast there. Andi. I've also used his upside to sticky tape to sick the template that I showed you earlier. On top of the silver I colored in the pencil lines with the Scharping, so they be a lot easier to see what I was sawing through the metal on. Before she started to soar, I made sure that the two pieces silver was still tightly stuck together. They hadn't slipped a tour. They went gaps in between $2 silver because as I was sawing out the main curve here, Andi, also, while I was driving through two pieces of silver, they would have cautioned a bit hotter on that might have caused the sticky. Attacking us on the tape to mount a little bit on DSO for the peace is not to be held together so tightly. Squeeze into your firmly to make sure they're still held tightly. I don't want slick room soaring because that would mean that they wouldn't match why I'm Sorry. I'm gonna make sure that my work is supported. Nice in the bench. Pay could have it in this area here so that I can access it with journalists or but it's still supported nicely. Also going to make sure that at some point about my work, I got my hands run their own both sides, the cut lines. I am supporting everything nicely. Andi defy threat. The blaze of all the holes straight press, which is the most important point. So funny, its height and not up. Now attention Wheel here remind Tighten it up. So get there. So, I mean, I haven't got it fully into this section here. That's better. You don't want Is it gonna move a little bit says you press down on it. But you don't want too much movement in your anus plate. That's so great. Otherwise it's not actually going to cut through. But I did want to point out to you Is the sound that you want to hear. I'm gonna make my way over to the curve festival from the middle of the shape. This is the sound you want to hear. Nice, smooth, arrhythmic sound You don't want to hear this noise. That noise came about because I started putting just a little bit of pressure on the saw blade. You don't need to just let it do the work for you guys up and down on Let it do the work for you now, as I'm cutting the shapes out time going to either Russia's US away or blow it away so I can still see the line that I want to cut out. Nicey, I find the C five stuck to pieces silver together with a bit sticky tape the silver justice of it. Stick here and hands around for a bit longer, so I'm going to continue on that shape out when I'm going to do yes, I'm going to cut up the tip, come back down to the whole cut round to the on the other side of Tip that that bit come out of my little bit of help because it's quite sick. Two pieces stuck together. But get that bit out and then turn the playground and trim off to the corner here to tip Here, I find by suing ups a chick on both sides rather than turning the blade round but the tip. I get a much nicer crisper. Enjoy. Tip to shape. Okay, one don't take much. That don't again. To the So I just sort backwards, Tim. So, justice, thank you for that. Six year, Cruz. Slow down a bit. So approached to just to make certain. Some got to cut NYSE joining up there, the 1st 1 just to make sure that they are joining up. And you could see those two bits of civil coming out. Now, if this is one piece of sheet, then they would have that some bitterness Middle would have fallen out because it's too. It's a little bit. That's not what is easy. Okay, encouragement. You get one. See? Right. So gonna do now. Just turned the present around. Just going Teoh tidy up the other end. - Okay . Yeah. So two shapes. That's out. Time to do the third. It's actually takes a little bit longer to cut through two layers together because they are office is thicker. Sits fix war effort from the blade. But if it means that I get to be earrings closely matched as possible, I think it's worth it. Oh, - okay . Okay. Those bits came out off easier than the bits at the other end. Again, just trying to shape. I keep my fingers out of the way as much as possible to give me the best possible. You know, with these exit such a school shape, please just just slipped on top of that broken. Not this time, anyway. I was just didn't put it in quite enough on top. No good just proved to you that that kind of thing just happened to all of us. So that's what soaring dough. Andi. No, pull off the tape plastic coating those bits of what? Silver? Dustin's. They're going to go in the April underneath for cycling on bond. Also, just going to rush off the surface here is well, make sure they don't dust, so I can put the hearing safely on top there without letting any of the silver dust that I created scratching the surface of the silver. So there's the two crescent moons shaped cut I need to need to them up with the needle files on, and then it will be time to prepare the ear wise into start something, everything together 10. Crescent Moon Earrings - filing: I've zoomed in a little bit closer for this past the class. He can hope to get a bit of years of facts that they are a record good much both of the outsides under the shape that's Ah Pierce out of of the present moon is a well on bond. I also wanted to go out to see was that I have filed this one most overseen. She says the ends here a sharp, very sharp digging to my finger a little bit. So I stopped doing that was here. They are nice. A smooth so usedto flatly file to smooth those little bit Onda. The shapes here are a little bit more refined on this one than they are on this one. I've used the surrounded of the the Oval Needle file to help me do that. So I put that one safely after way. Andi, I've also used to render legal file too smooth. This area here where that line was that curve other was sawing out. So it's Scots. I feel well, one little bump a couple of votes. Um so when you smooth those out and also get rid off the rougher lines, I can see here has been left by the the jurors saw so sweet across remember, always used to file that best fits the shape of the silver that you are working with. So if this is around it shaper curve from using around needle file on a mainly go forward But I'm sweet being article bit us. Well, so I got a nice sweet Yeah, the sets um, we're going This couple of bumps it I could feel my fingers crossed that you see them But I could feel my fingers but they've gone Send It's, well, people a bit more there. Yeah, happy that I'm also going to do is hold the needle file at about 45 degrees. I'm just sweet a little bit just to get me to Kippers. Some discusses might also believe it is a bit of a lip along the edge here. You can also get rid of by sweeping across life so as well that and on the other side as well. Good, right, finish off change over to the flat file this time to get me to those shall purchase Only going to do is just supporting silver my finger thumb as much possible protects it from scratch, is apart from anything else and just sweep across friend from the other side. Sweep across the file That shit. Well, aunt, again on this side, that's right. Getting rid of any potentially sharp it's It also means that when I come to solder soldier something, they're on their. I've actually got a better surface of soldiers. It's a little bit wider, so see outside dumb. So when you use the rounded Oval Needle file now, this is actually oval That has got, quite, uh, quite shocked tips, I suppose. What, Chris chips almost really mimicking the shape that I've sought out. So I'm gonna do with this. It's just use it to again get rid of the so great marks. And it was so make sure that the tips neat but well, oops. One. If you've taken the time to be accurate with your soaring remember, accuracy is far more important. Speed, then this shouldn't take you too a little bit in that corner, that special insert one. It's worth turning piece over. Just checking from the other side as well. Just maybe realize it that needs a little bit more. Try to get There we go. So no, put it down only to stop it there. Special. So there's one job left to do before I sold up on nuts. Give of silver a texture. 11. Crescent Moon Earrings - hammering: it's time to hammer the airings to change it from. And I smooth finish to one that's better with a deported texture. With this hammer, I now work out which side of the earrings I'm going to hammer with this hammer. I can't have a both sides, because by the time I turned it, one turned over, hammered the other. The first side out of damage would have lost my sweets. Text services were being up against the still bench block. So So they do is that way my whole thing till the light said it. See if you can Sears. I'm moving about the light. They're not such a good much. This is a bit of access silver sent showing through the whole, uh I know. So So here is. Well, sir, if I were to hammer, um, this side So we seen on one side of your head on this side on the other, it wouldn't be such a good match will be bad. It would be such good much if I turn one piece is silver over then that is a much better matched. I said at the start of the class. It doesn't matter if your shape isn't completely symmetrical because your two pieces will soon we'll still much so I'm going to do. It's just put dot on the back of that one and a doctor in back of that one. They are the backs of the hearings. So that is what I don't want to a hammer double check, which is west double checking for you actually do something you can't retrieve. So yep. So you tell that is the backs. So well I'm going to do now is hammer each piece and turn on the front with this hammer. Making sure haven't left any obvious gaps and sexually, a little bit more there. Okay. Do you really like how text changes the look of a piece? Quite dramatically. Marceau's hammering. I try to have only on the right on the edges of both you and the outside edges and the ages . The pitch pissed shapes as well so that I could it would soften. The age is a little bit. Is that one done? You still this one too much Can just check that I haven't missing parts. The texture out so bean shaped maybe soon have been filed. They've been hammered. Now it's time for soldering 12. Crescent Moon Earrings - soldering 1: I brought the cretins wounds and jumping over to the socialist section because it's time to solder. The jump rings onto each point on the present so that I can then attach the ear wires on. Get these earrings finished. The first things I need to do, though, is make sure that the jump rings are close. Properly close. Theseus thes two assumes a bit open, and they're open because of how I formed them. I formed a coil of wire on, then cut down one side of that. So that means that the ends of the wire things that jump prints being cut, a sitting of its stepped to each other. So this central continued calling up on this single continue calling down. So I need a little bit of movement just to get them to join up on what I do. I'm showing you my fingers because the jumping so small it's not gonna be easy to see this actually show you with the jump rings. So do it twists a little bit on push in, which, at the same time that action helps to get them really nicely lined up, just trying to push them in with a pair applies won't get such a nice shape. Now these jump rings are far too small. Hopes for me to hold with my fingers were from doing this. So going to use back into focus way going to use to purse off, uh, flat nose pliers. So if you imagine I've got the join up 12 o'clock. Andi, I've got her flat night supplies at three and nine oclock on just going to twist and push him with a little bit. It's a very small so they don't take a great deal work to close him up. But if I don't take the time and trouble to close them up, it will be really noticeable on the French soldiers just designed to the heart spit on. These is getting a decent grip with the pliers because they are so small. So I'm going to sold out one jumping to each tip of the president's one dude before. However, I want one of the jump rings to be for that on the brick. So the same same plane as the hearings. The other one I want to go across the one that is for that I'm going to attach the loop of the ear y to the one that's going across like that. The free end of the year, while young you're going to go through a hole in your ear isn't going to poke into that, jumping to hold it securely and hold the hearing in price. So I'm just going to put the first jump rings one there and one there. Remember that because I want these hearings to be a minute mirror image of each other. I need to make sure that jump rings are soldered on in a mirror image fashion as well, so I'm going to do the two that are closest to each other first. So what I'm going to do is use medium soldier with a piece. Just say, if I could get another piece out of the books. It is often hard respect hitting the soldier out of the box because it's so small, really good. On another piece, I just sat one two piece, a medium solder, really medium soldier. Certain soldier on the other pair of jump rings with Easy Soldier I'm going to do is hold the first jump ring in reverse section tweets is I was just checking that join. It's still on this sites. What I'm going to do is melt the meeting soldier on Is that chomping at the joint which will close it doing at the same time and then put in place here and re melts the soldier. So So it flows, enjoins those pieces together. So on the flux influxes of it out of you write a steps, the jumping into it, going to hold a jumping up his soldier a multitude every time that's now. So it in place, I'm going to put on there on just take time. So lying shot properly with the chip, the crescent moon. Okay, so just made sure that their touching on the join which has got to soldier on it, is the part that is the part of the jumper, and rather, that is touching present mood. I don't need to apply anymore flux that still flux on there. It's just right, so it's not as easy to see. So I'm going to do now is put much the heat into the crescent moon. Let that heat was soak into the jump ring started jumping up again to get the social flow. Two reasons. One heating this up the most first is that's the biggest piece of silver, and therefore it's going to be the most heat from the blowtorch to get up solving temperature, especially compared to a tiny jumping here. And the second reason is that soldier, remember, flows the hottest part of your work. So once everything's the right soloing temperature, I do want to make sure this is a little bit hold hotter, so solder flows and jumping onto that. Hey, miss scene fresh off the soldier melting just their liquid flush assumes that happened. I took the heat away because they don't want to overheat it. But you can see that's no one piece of silver. So I'm going to pop that in the quench pot and then straight into the pickle. So the Titzer cleans up so I can soldier than the second piece on on just going to move this a little bit closer so that I can line up the second jumper. So I just put the trump ring and the pliers again so that the joint is expressed. Dip it in flux places on top of the peace soldier. Okay, that's their in place. Andi. Oops, that end when she might want to do by the way before you get started is to put the dot with a Sharpie with a permanent marker just to indicate where you want the first jumping to go so you don't accidentally let it roll, so that one again so nicely in place. So that also needs here, sitting in Britain, Meyer tweeters a little bit wet, obviously. And here, the water sizzling of better that reparations that touch shirt, such the wedge tweezers to the hot silver. So you see that soldier in place again, that he's going to quench pot Andi, then pop in the pick or to clean up the other one on. And then I would be back to show you how to soldier these jump rings in place. 13. Crescent Moon Earrings - soldering 2: I just taken the now clean earrings out the pickle on giving them a good rinse on door so dry on what I'm going to do now is show you how to soldier the's other to jump prints on to the currently empty ends off the crescent moon. And it's this little bit of soldering that makes this an intermediate project because due to the angle that I want the jump rings to be relative to the present moons, I can't just lay them onto the soldering brick. Got to hold him in place with tweezers on. It doesn t quite a steady hand, so you might want to practice during this little bit on the piece of scrap silver. And also do remember that if the silvery doesn't quite work out the first time, then you can do it again. You see me do that in other classes. Onda Also these are only why jump rings if they're not sold it at precisely the right angle . You can carefully and gently give him a with with twist with a pair of nylons. Your pliers. The same is before I'm going to from the edge I'm feeling, for with my my fingers see a rougher section That's where they're joining us. The joy is now upsets the tip off. The Riverside Country says I've got a piece of easy soldiers there on a piece of ET soldiers there already and waiting. I'm using Easy Soldier because those was so set in place with medium soldier Onda. I've got the first hearing set up so that this chip is slightly overhanging the edge of soldiering. Break on this tip with the jumping on. It already is lying isil flat. I've made sure it's a position it like that. Not like that. So that if I do matter over, he's a little bit. That jump ring went there, just fall off. It will stay in place. Andi soldier will go solid again. But having this overhanging means that I'm going to be out, too. Hold my tweets is with the jump ring up against it while soldiers. But first of all, I need to get the easy soldier in place. Just that was checking without moving around off the the jump ring with tweezers hasn't moved. It still know whether join us is dipping us in the flux, and I'm going to melt the soldier. Okay, easy soldiers. So it was a lot quicker this time. So now that the soldier is in place on the jump ring, I can Oh, just up against There's just double check that I've got everything. How nicely that noise was. Just me moving the the job flux out of the way. So we put some heat into the closet, move, go moves about a little bit, but you can see that's soldiered in place. You could actually see little the bright soldier there highlighted against the dark rock civilization. So I might need to just break very carefully. Touch up that that that area with the Lismore hammer. But, um, we shall see. There we go. That's that hearing done on. See if I could do the same to the other. So I set it up. They are much the same way. Hopes it. Just a mirror fashion. Andi. When I quenched that first steering, by the way I may chose I quench the end of my my tweezers as well, because otherwise they would definitely too hot for me to do this for bit. So join the right place, dip it in flux, find first of all there. Then hold it up against the easy soldier That wasn't in the plan. I went and shopped. Dropsy. You jump ring. So that is definitely going to be too hot. I mean, it was about with such is quenched it. I can t give it to this, but for drawing the teacher that's slightly out of you. Make sure psycho shit lined up with them and correct lined up correctly again. I am no distributive flux again because off see quenching it, uh, wash the flood itself on the second time. Lucky. - There we go. As you can see for me, the trickiest thing. It's just keeping your nerve as sounds to move about a little bit. One thing you can do he's put a penny here or on the scrap piece of metals so that the earring has got something to push up against it. You're you're holding the hearing in place. I prefer just to keep my patients and make sure that what I know is it will eventually go because although Penny could be useful to brace tearing up against, it's also heat sinks. That's going to need a little bit more heating but you can see patients prevailed. That's their sole did nicely in place. So that hearing is also going to go in the quench pot Pickle pops cleanup on Duthie. Lastly, I'm going to need to do before publishing is to finish off the year wise. 14. Crescent Moon Earrings - earwires: hearing, screened up nicely in the pickle site of the Mount, gave me a rinse, gave him a dry onda. Also checked the soldier joints with a price and secure, and they feeling ice and secures well again. A good wiggle you might be able to see on this one. You see a slightly shine your patch where it's catching the right a little bit differently from the rest of it. That was where I did have a little bit of excess soldier I mentioned in the last section off the cross. Um, I just used the small hammer that I use on the rest of this. Just a hammer there, onder to discover any sort of reflection soldier on hammering me that will be shining again . So what I need to do is now finish off the earrings with ear wise. I'm going to be using no 0.8 millimeter. So so around wire. Andi. This time I'm going to be working from home. Real the wire. Quite often, I start the year wise chapter in the classes by saying that I've cut off for 1/2 centimeter links or 25 centimeters like this time I'm going to be working with the whole real because I'm going to work out as they go along. How long I need the wire to be. I'm going to start off both your wise by using the round nose pliers to form an I loop at one end of the wire on. And there is a guide with step by step photos on how to make an eye loop attached to this class. Ready future. Download seeking. Get a closer view of what I'm doing because I'm conscious has work. It's very small. Most of it is the size of my fingers. My fingers might hide with the view from you, but I'm going to hold the wire. About 1/3 of the way down applies. Remember, the further towards the handle, the bigger the leap is going to be so quite so. I think that's gonna be decent sized loop and I can't feel the wires. I run by some of my finger across the top. I don't want it sticking out. Point it fresh with supplies, but I'm going to do my finger and thumb close to the pliers. I'm working. So what? Control over this section. Why Onda twist supplies away about around here and continued up twist until on the wire around until that cut end meets up this long stem again. Andi just going to it's ever allowing that to sit on one side. I want it sit up with top. So just put a prize back in and twisted pulled background. So that is now sitting up with chop. Just going to get that So they push with marriage, applies make sure things lying flat. So that's that start on. And that is going to touch on to one of the loop study. The I maths I jump prints. One Luke that's going to attach onto the one that's lying in the same plane. That's the hearing itself. So that's gonna be the front of hearing there. Touch on there. Um, what I want to do first before I do that, please finish off the rest of the year. Why was no continue with a bit more of ur mother on what? I'm going to spend it. I won't. This wouldn't dumbing punch. This is one of the domain punches I use with my domain block to shape a silver that has got texture to it. shows in this one because I hold it up against the see, Actually, um, her martyr wrote on. I measured thes quite a long time ago when that's about 21 millimeter diameter downing Andi . So I hold it up against that. It looks as if it's going to give a nice curvature Is the hearings. I can't have the white going straight across because then there will be no give in the wire to allow it to hook into this loop is jumping at the end here. Has got to have a curve to it. That looks like a nice curve. So do is hoat the I loop against that. Just just spend it around. Yeah, sorry. I know that cameras. I mean something out of the way. So okay, it's a bit of you now. Oh, how it's all going to a touch. I'm going to trim the wire where my finger is. So it's really was I was looking for was to see that there's a nice tail at the end there. Good. So I'm going to leave that for the moment on and make another ear wire to the same stage. Was that one So again make sure that very no kinks in the wire on. Not that I loop again, holding at third way down the place, then pull back a little bit. Such is now searching that took, but the wire can make sure that this is hasn't got, hasn't picked up me. Thinks picked up in university bends that would spoil the look. And again hold it on to my mantra. Pulls a wire around so I should know we go natural. Line up with those two pieces of wire, the one sided first, every captain, one that I've just I just spent on and use the 1st 1 of the guide as to where your wife the second. So we'll move a couple of things out of the way. My work. What Taper always gets rather cluttered. So before I do anything else, I'm going to hammer this section of the ear wires because that will give some strength to the ear wise. I want to do better. More motivation to the end here. I want to shape a bit more. I want to file the end so that it's not rough and sharp going through the hole in your ears and I also want to maybe have to trim off. Better still was. Well, if you do that before I do, any fighting otherwise have to defining twice. No point in doing that on whilst I'm doing with that. I don't want to put it out of shape, So hammering this section here will help to strengthen it. So going to hammer on the steal bench block and she's punishing Hammer for that. He's gonna hold such I look after way because I don't want to damage that. Okay, so I moved that pattern light might have to see the light catching more on this flatter section here, and that's given, and I spring to the You are so so opened the early proper to cover up a little bit, but the same will happen to this one as well. So feel still much I can. It's got a nice spring to it. So move those after the way again, huh? On. So I'm going to do is use the flat nose pliers just to hold on to the open end about Luke and twist it upwards so that I can attach it onto that jump ring, close it back down again do the same to the other one. Lift it up. Cook on the Are you hearing comprise about darling. Okay, so starting to look a little bit more how we want them to bay. Just realize I put this on the ruined. Well, far better to notice. Now the night wrong. Never. OK special. So it's on east to now is finished this end. I want to make sure that the end of the wire that's sticking through the loop here is long enough so that teach does holding shape. It doesn't sit back out again on one thing that source is going to help with that is that the curve here is now a little bit wider than the hoop. So what I'll have to do when you're wearing them is to push the white in a little bit, to be able to hook it through their hook it through the jumping at the end here, Andi, that will put the ear y under attention and that attention will help to hold everything in place. So So I'm going to do easier. Holding it around this way is just holding. Hear why? So that everything is lined up nice fate. I'm going to the then just get a Sharpie. Andi put a shop him upset So that Sharpie mark I want to see that Sharpie mark is now where I want to bend the wire to be able to get it to go through. I hadn't. I'm going to use that first shopping mark to help me line up the air wise looks and mark the second piece of wire as well. Okay, so a little bit small beat Mike Garcia a mark that same distance up to your wife on both of them. So I'm going to do now is from the supplies again, Andi, that that Sharpie mark and hope supplies on and pull back. So what? Quite a sharp bend in the a waas that And he's saying to the 2nd 1 Okay, this actually in real life doesn't take nearly as always, I'm taking. It's just stopping and starting a lot so that I can explain to you what I'm doing. Put the lid back on that says Enjoy. Who is Andi I'm going to do now? That is definitely too long. I only need about two millimeters for that piece of wire to be up to toe hold in place so you can use the why cutters to trim. Not off. Is that the guide for trimming off 2nd 1? Okay, Bruce. So next thing I need to do is follow the ends. I'm going to use the flat needle. Far for that. - That's always use your fingers as much as your eyes to make sure that that's nice and smooth so that I can now push the wider bitch. It's on detention when that whole 10 saying to the 2nd 1 booms doesn't that's better, Very go didn't want to lie flat from it. So the ear wise and now in place, the hooks at the end are holding firmly because everything's under tension, because I had to squash that a little bit and it wants to spring back open a bit. So you want the hook pushing up against the jumping there, that tensions holding it in place. All that is left to do now is to polish the earrings 15. Crescent Moon Earrings - final thoughts: the earrings are now after the temple potion. I nice and shiny and ready to wear. Probably one of most important parts of this design is to remember to make some as a mirror images to each other. So that's the texture is on the outside, off each hearings that be seen when you wear it. The most difficult part of this project is probably soldering on that second jump ring. Hold your nerve, Hold everything steady when you heat up. The silver band went from soldier to Flow and then remove the heat as soon as a soldier has flown. But it is worth practicing that technique. You won't get it right perfectly the first time, and no one ever does. But practice does make perfect on. Once you got used to doing that kind of thing, holding a soldier praying or so bail in place. Senator back independent. While she heats up soldier and re melt, It's and soldier B into place. What you most that technique. You'll be able to soldier on some very, very delicate pieces onto your pendants and earrings. Such worthwhile taking time to practice. I hope that you've enjoyed accounts. I hope it's it's torture. Another way to use your discussion to create something that isn't just search. Do you remember to download the equipment list on the soil, hence tip sheet and also the photo step by step instructions of how to do I loops. If you're not already familiar with those, please do upload photos off the humans you make. I always love to see those great as well. If you could leave review to help students, Thank you for watching.
