1. Introduction Creating a Handmade Bridal Cushion: Hello, My name's Theresa on I'm a Qualifies art and craft teacher. I've took textiles for many years. Today we're going to make a bridal wedding ring cushion for your big day or someone else's big day. Before we do that, I'd like to show you a selection off cushions that have been made for weddings. There's vintage one made from a tablecloth with vintage lace. The tame across was very old. It was Morsi turn, but I managed to save just what you see there on made a lovely cushion. Also, we're going to make a bridesmaid's cushion, which will be shown at the end is just a bonus. But the cushion we're actually going to make is the gold cushion I've presented. The calls is both slides and video. This is so to appeal to people who either prefer slides or some might prefer video. It's too so two different styles of learning. So I hope you like it, and I hope there's a learning still there to Sergio. But Bubble, please work to your own pace cause the slides is necessary on the video on above everything else. Please, please enjoy it 2. Section 1 Equipment and First Steps: to make the cushion. You'll need several items, but some of them you're probably having your work box anyway. Your need. Ah, handful of water in or enough ward in to fill the cushion. Two pieces of cream sat in one for the front of the cushion on once the back on these four pieces of gold lace, the measurements on Theo instructions will be given at the end. You will also need some pins. Ah, cotton and needle, some scissors, narrow ribbon and some gold legs. And I very nearly forgot. You'll also need some gold organza place. The organs are the lace and the cream Fred Brooke together, making sure that the cream fabric is on the bottom. The organza is in the middle on the laces on the top. Be careful. This is quite difficult thing to do, actually. But make sure that the gold lace square is central on the organza machine or hand so around the outside, a cheese on, then machines. So around the later the gold lace square in the middle. Be careful when you run the your machine for over the pins, because I broke many a machine needle by doing that I find it easier to take the pins out of the fabric as I approach them. That way, you save your needle next step machine or hand. So around the outside age, making sure that you stitch through all the thicknesses. Pin two pieces of pre gathered lace, either side off the gold lace, and that's the goal place in the middle. It say it's taking shape already now, so both pieces of lace in place, close to the edge off the central gold fabric in the middle of the lovely gold lace. It's looking very pretty now with the remained in two pieces of lace, these air sewn down over the ends of the first pieces. If you look at the picture, you can see what I'm a. It's a nice square now. 3. Section 2.1 Making Up the Cushion Slides: pin the squares right sides together leave in roughly a seven centimeter gap in one scene. This is for the warding to go in the scissors air to show you that between the two pins there, there is actually a get just wide enough to put the water earnings so once and to meet her around the edge over the pins, avoiding the pre gather glace. Take particular care with the corners because sometimes the lace will buckle up in the corners. So if you compare the lace at an angle, I just ensure as you approach the lace with your nido that it hasn't backward up. It hasn't crunched up, underneath or between the layers. This is the very best part. I think you're now going to pull the square through the gap, so the Kushner now is into the right side. Now, once you put it into the right side, take a pencil all the edge of the scissors with that tear in the fabric, just ease out the corners. You can actually do this as well with a dressmaker's pin. My probably think that's the why. It's it's way to do it. Actually, I've had students who have done this against my advice, actually, on their put the scissors right through the corners. So bearing in mind what I've just said, I think I'd be crying, too. Say use dressmaker's pin. Press the cushion cover as it is now under a cloth on, then fill with what in? It's looking good, isn't it? Now turn the war edges of the opening under and felt them a little bit to make it easier to work with. Pin them together. So now you have two very nice clean of non friable edges. Pin them together, then with a very small stitch over so from one side to the other, try and match the color of your thread as much as you can to the gold fabric. But most of all, keepers stitches very, very tiny because this side will show fold one meter of threat in half. Now with the fold, you're going to push that through the needle on, then pull it round and they're not it. So you're actually not in four strands of thread together threat that you said the NATO, and they're not the end securely. Now. Push the needle from the center back to the front and gently pull. Don't target it because you could under the not on. Then the thread will just come through the front. So be very careful when you do this. This is why you really need quite a large, secure, not in the back. Now push the needle through to the back and pull the threat firmly. Then repeat this twice more. So you're pushing the need it in on. Then you're bringing it up again to the front. Do this twice. Don't talk on the thread again, because once again you're might break it on. Then you have to start this process again. It's not much from but it's looking good, isn't it? Folk The ribbon in half and pushed the needle through at the half mark. Place it on the center of the cushion on, push the needle straight away through the ribbon and the cushion to secure so that the needle will now be at the back. Bring the needle through to the front, make a very small not in the front, higher than not underneath the ribbon. Secure and cart on. This is the finished picture. Along with the requirements. I think there are about 10 eyes himself. 10 items here, please pulls thes slides so that you can make an accurate note. Ring safely secured on the ribbon. Tie a bow, cut the ends as requires on secure the rings. These are too precious rooms that you really don't want to lose, so make sure they really are skewed tightly onto the ribbon, they put say. 4. Section 2.2 Making Up the Cushion Video 1: the video is for anybody who prefers learning from real time videos. So first step, which is exactly the same method as for the slides to pin the organs, are on top of the white setting. Now just lose sleep in it because you're going toward another piece of fabric shortly. Flatten it out, make sure they're on any creases. This is really beautiful. It's lovely lice. Now there is a wrong side to this. The wrong side is flight is slightly flatter on more shiny than the right side, but you really have to look for it. But it is there, so pin this all the way around and this is really time, so it might be a bit slow for Som. - Just ensure there are no ruffles. Inner or creases straightened out is necessary. Sometimes the bottom fabric creases out or ruffles underneath and needs to be a straight into game. So in machine, so keep close to the age. Now, As I explained in the slides, it's best to take the pins out as you approach them. Sometimes I do leave them in if I think I can clear it like that one. But at the corners especially, they need to come out. It's so serious, it's breaking the Ito, or worse than that really is to pull the threats from a fine Fred Brick. It's that is really easy to toe. So machines, so all the way around the forages, trying to keep the fabric flat with your left hand. Unless, of course, you are left handed. Then that will be your right hand lift. The Nida the pressure first at the co owners, moved separate around and then put the foot down again. It's quite a nice, relaxing toss to Dio. I can't remember how many sides are beginning to feel sleepy just watching it. It's quite cathartic, isn't it? Watching this, it certainly isn't stressful. Process should be the title of another physio. So in for therapy, My foot. I've told that as well. In a previous life, it looks as if we're back at the beginning foot shop. Lovely 5. Section 2 Making Up the Cushion Video 2: no need to push the sign machine away because I'm working on quite a narrow work surface there. Trim the edges, any rough, frayed ages. Really, it wouldn't matter if you didn't because they're going to be in closed inside the cushion. But it does make sewing easier, especially on the sewing machine, because it's those edges that can get stuck in the teeth on the machine on cause a lot of problems in the ball being And that is the last thing you want when you're working with setting off silk on the laces. Well, then my embroidery seizes dressmaking scissors before too big that's looking very poor CEO . Where is a the lace now? This is how not to place the lace down. Many students that I've had will sit and get on on their own, and they will automatically place the lace this way. This is not the way to do it now. I'm just showing you how not to do this. It looks as if it should go this way so the lace will straighten out into a frill. But no, it doesn't. This is the way that they should go that way. So you want the edge of the lace against the edge of the fabric. Pin it down, stretch it slightly as you go, but not to march. It needs to be flat, but that's that. Lace does have quite a lot of giving it, so it's quite okay to stretch it now. Of course, when you're so in with Simon Shane or even by hand, you can always tack, use tacking stitches. So who pin and then over the pin, you use very long stitches. Now these stitches cook, tacking stitches. It just holds the fabric in place. Who removed the pains and you machine so our hands so over the tacking, stitches on. Then once you finish the sewon, you removed the tacking stitches, but I find that you can actually get a way, depending on what you're making. If I were dressmaking, I would tack. I will just tacking stitches or once again, a very long stitch on the sewing machine because that exorcists attack as well. Once again, that can be removed. But for a project like this, I wouldn't tack. But that's entirely a personal preference. You may prefer to tack there that's looking okay, so pistes fabric now the cushion fronts underneath the foods. Try and keep the the edge, the edge of the foot quite close to the edge of the lace. Now, as she moves off flat in the lace as you go, I want to say flat in that I do mean the band at the top. Occasionally you might need to stop. Just realign the lace the top bit, flatten it down and then carry on. From there you are. That's the 1st 1 some down. 6. Section 2 Making Up the Cushion Video 3: it's surprising how every step makes a cushion look just a tiny bit more finished the second piece of lace. Normally, when sown, I would back stitch with the same machine. Just reverse a couple of times at the beginning and the end of each scene or piece of sign . But because this is going to be joined with another piece of fabric, there's There's no need to do that because the stitches won't arm rifle. What one didn't take a long as the other one that said, it's looking good. Yes, I'm pleased with that. So just trim off strictly pieces, okay, in the last two pieces sewn down in exactly the same way, but they cover the ends off the pieces that you've already sewn down, so it's right away across over the ends. So you're end up with a nice square of lace of pre gathered lace, I should say, on a nice square of gold lace in the center. I think it would actually make a nice christening cushion as well, with a silver spoon tied to it instead of the rings, or for perhaps another celebration. So much you could do with these cushions. Very expensive to buy looking nice and straight. Now, if you did want to embroider the front of your cushion with beads, lots of beads. If you wanted to cover the entire front, you would do it. After you've sown the lace down, you'll see that the Bryants mates cushions were made differently that the decorations were put on after the cushions were made up. This is because it was just a corner of the cushion that was used on that was sewn on and not the entire front. So it was quite easy just to put a few pieces in the Kona, so I didn't have to decorate the front before before stuff in it. 7. Section 2 Making Up the Cushion Video 4: So this is 1/3 piece now of lace that I'm sewing down straight across the end. So that's straight across the first piece of lace myself for the end. So the last piece of lice that is the correct way to use the pains with the head facing into the front of the fabric and the tail, the shock pace facing away that got caught on the lace then And that's all four pieces of lace sewn down. Okay, sit. Just tidy up the ages. Take a freight paces in the striking three days away Flatten it down. Look how nice that is. So with the second piece of plain white silk or satin, place it face down. So you know, I have the right side of two pieces of fabric together the right side of the cushion front on the right side of the backing fabric, and I going to pin it all the way around. Now, when you get to the corners, you need to be very, very careful. Fold the coolness in now. This is so you don't catch that under the sewing machine. It doesn't matter if you catch just a tiny pace. You couldn't carefully snippet. But you don't want to really ruffle it up. Otherwise your lose the nice sharp corner on the lace. Lulu come sightly the second co owner. So I pushed the life's under the names. You see, the corner is actually clear. 8. Section 2 Making Up the Cushion Video 5: I think it looks more difficult than it actually is. People tend to panic at curves and coal miners. That said, we're nearly there exactly the same with the next corner, pull it back and under. - It's a tough pain I didn't want to go through. That's so you're going to need to leave the gap along one of the Sein's and that as you can see, it's for the ward and all the stuff in to go through. Start in just off centre of the same. Now there I did the reverse stitch. I went backwards and forwards to tighten toe lock the stitches, and I should do that the other end when I finished. Now that it's because I will be put in the water turning up, pushing the warden in and without locking the stick, she says, I likelihood that some of the stitches may come on down and the same will be weekend. So just lock it on that Tyson the same The entrance for the war Dean. So all the way around. Now, when you get to the cool, no, just haven't opaque. Make sure the lace is pushed under and out of the way of the machine nasal 9. Section 2 Making Up the Cushion Video 6: now that it's been sown around the age, the cushions ready to be pulled into the right way. So very carefully put it inside out, taking care to push the coolness that with your finger you won't get the whole corner out. But you get most of it now to get a sharper corner there with a point, take a sewing needle or a pin on. Just carefully pull the corner out. Take care not to break the stitching. And it was quite a lot. They're not pulled out. Also be very careful not to prick your fingers. The last thing you want on this lovely Saturday trumps a lot. Oh, I'm laughing. But I wouldn't I really wouldn't laugh if it happened. Some money. Look how nice it looks right through the gap that you left Push the world in all the stuff in inside. Now don't overstuff it. You want it nice and plum. Nice ink. Hardly but not firm and hard, lovely, nice and plump. That is just to show how the cushion will look once a stitch in is in place from the back to the front in the center, not turn the rough edges inside. and pin them together. Any loose threats, just stick them inside. Now the thread you're going to use to over so with should be used double and not the end of it. A nice, strong not push the not inside where it won't be saying pinch the edge and oversold. That's small stitch from one side to the other side, pushing the not back in if it resurfaces. But that one is lovely. Little stitches. Removing the pins that you get close to them almost finished. The end is in sight. After practice, you'll be supports. I quit, for you can make these. 10. Section 2 Making Up the Cushion Video 7: now threats that your NATO with a double pace of thread So you're going to take a long piece of thread and folded in half on with the fold, you're going to put it into the the eye of the knees. Oh, bend it round and not the four strands together. So you're I'm actually pulling through the needle on four strands of threat. You see the not now make the not quite substantial because you don't want to pull it through to the front and, worse still, pull it out of the fabric because you could catch the delicate strands of silk and lice. Now, if you're worried about the back being a bit untidy, which it isn't, and it won't be when you finish, you can always sew a button there. Ah, button or obeyed. But to be honest, I don't think it needs it. It's a tiny little sticks there. The needs are coming up. The import, the rape bone, so this needs to be folded in half. That's the halfway mark. Put the needle through the middle and straight back down through to the back of the cushion , a couple of stitches to secure it. Secure it with a few stitches to the from and not it lovely. Now just push a needle into the cushion, pull it out anywhere. This is not to lose the thread, that's all. So cut the threat off, and that's lovely. See, you flopped. Step you've lost seeing now. But it doesn't matter because you've already knotted air and the ribbons secure. And look how cool just that looks. Um, that's the finish, Christian. You need to get those wedding rings and secure them. You can try the mom pin the morn stitch through them. People just seem to secure them. Anyway, that suits their I would actually tie them on in the note. Well done. If you finish a cushion world, um, and I hope you'll please with it. 11. Section 3 Recap Instructions for Ring Cushion: this is just her revised or re kept the instructions, please pulls the side and make it easier to read. That's quite a lots to read their hope. You enjoy it, but I won't read them out. They're all 17 instructions, so it is quite a lengthy process. I believe me, though it's well worth yet their foot thes little wedding ring cushions look exclusive, unique on that are very, very pretty. 12. Section 4 Bridesmaid's Cushion Slides and Video: the following is an idea based on the bride of cushion, of how you can make a personalized cushion too much. The bridesmaids dresses. It's exactly the same idea. The same method and instruction with shop bought bows. Die mentees lace ribbon to match the bridesmaid's dress. Curro, hold next beautifully. Some instructions here for decorating front The cushion you might like to pulls the slide at this moment on read. Read them. I think these are really beautiful. I've seen so many all different different fabrics, different designs and colors on their really quite stunning when they match the rice mistress or even the page boy shirt. Another vizier for learners who would rather have a video than slides. This one shows how to make a very basic bridesmaids cushion from polyester fabric that will match. Or that matched a page boy shirt. The very, very pretty I'm using them together. I couldn't really make my mind up which ones hips. So I've used them together, and it's made exactly the same way as put the previous cushions. But there wasn't any lace on this one. Now I'm not sure how I feel about the finished product to be honest. I like lace and blinky on these cushions. A real celebration. But this was to be kept quite plain. The feature waas the fabric. So I'm so anything other than just the fabric might have looked too fast. See? Anyway, here we go. Now you've seen this before. These cushions are very, very personal. It's all a matter of personal style and personal taste. So I'm going to so all the way around the the four edges just leave in a small space for the stuff in now have actually started this too close to the corner. So I will have to stop, leave a space with suffering and then restart. The corn is need to be kept to a perfect shopped triangular shape. So the same shouldn't begin and start at corner. Now I've sown in several centimeters or inches. I've reversed the stitch to lock it. Now I'm going to leave a gap here on this gap is for the stuff in the awarding to go through reverse, the stitcher going to lock it so there won't be any tear off these. The stitches won't open when I put the water you need. That's quite it's quite secure. Now this is real time us, and you can say how quick quickly is to make these cushions just the pain cushion. - From there. We all back to the beginning. Perfectly straight. Not Quinn. Cozaar, Rinko Zo creases. Now they extort tippet. Who is? The coon is out with the pain. It's very prissy fabric. I think. I prefer the side that's face in the camera. That's a bit loud, but as a background back in fabric, it's It's okay. I imagine that that's that much. Is something on the bridal table. The tablecloths. There was a reason for using that, obviously, stuff that remember not to overstuff it. You don't want a hard cushion into the coal nurse. I mean, it is a good example of how you can use dress, fabric, ordinary polyester fabric, day dress, fabric or shirt's fabric. And that doesn't look very nice. It's very pretty, so it doesn't have to be satins and silks on the heavily traditional texture bridal fabric . Well, that is very nice. Actually, I take it back. It does look lovely. Okay, that's a nice, plump cushion now. Not too hard. Not too soft. I sent. Makes sure the stuffing has gone right to coolness. And just as before, turn the coon outside, turn the edges in so you have a nice, smooth flat age and pin him the two together lovelies taking shape. What? So the edge has been over soundness as previous searches. A smooth stitch there is just put into shape. I find the mission of the could the cushion I'm Once again you're going to use the threads . Four strands, said one. There, you know that that's folded, threaded, folded again. So you have four strands and not not folding going on there straight from the back to front . Andi, fold the ribbon again. I think you know the rest Last beginning to look like an overgrown living bag. I really think it needed lies. It it needed pretty and I pull it a bit. But then, as I explained, I do like shiny things and sequins by scoring per se Quite modest, actually, which is probably suitable. Well, suit? Yes. You know, suitable zehr right or hurt? I'm just so tempted to put some lace around it. I've been asked not to. So there you go Now, once again to hide the not on the bag you could put a button there, or a little pearl bays or beat of your own choosen anything. You could actually put anything there You can't actually see the not it's quite Nate might sitting. It's pulling into shape and there you have it. That's quite or I think it's very pretty when you actually look at it when you're holding it. It does actually look very pretty. The camera is looking down on this at a strange old angle, so you can't see the squareness over. It looks as if it's Nick turn. You say that this is what I want to go. I want to put some bling on it, and this is what I would dough. But no, I'm not allowed to on this one. But that is just to give you an idea. You could put the diamond tizen the ribbon on ribbon flowers. I'm sure it would look lovely with just a tiny bit on Pearle flowers, But no, I am being very restrained here. I've been asked to be with strength, so that's exactly what I'm doing at that. See and divides Thank you very much for joining the lesson. I hope you enjoyed it. I certainly enjoyed making it 13. Section 5 Bonus Idea for a Vintage Cushion: thank you for staying with May. I'm watching the whole of the video. This is by way of thank you, and it's just a bonus idea off making up a vintage cushion. Now there seems to be some discrepancies of what actually vintage means. Some believe it means anything older than 20 years. Another is the same 30 years. So I'm going to stick with what I always believed was vintage. And that's anything fabrics, furniture, anything off 25 years. This slide shows a cushion cover, which I bought in the local charity shop for £2. It's Vin teach. It's some machine, so in on it. But I'm going to make some bridesmaids that cushions from this on. That should be really lovely once. Getting this, I believe, is, is a lot older than 25 years, so it is definitely vintage. It's quite size as well. So I imagine that I'm going to get four bridesmaids Kuchins from this by cutting front off on mounting it on a colored setting. This one was featured at the beginning of video, and it is vintage. It's made from a tablecloth, are way older than 25 years. I inherited this from someone who was actually throwing out. So it wasn't really inheritance is such on. It was stained. There were holes in it. And I just saw this piece go in the bin and I thought, No, no, no, that this is a close up of some of the detail. The lace that you see around the edge is from Paris and its dates 1920. I bought that from another supplier as Parisienne 1920. So I'm believing that is actually our vintage. Another date out close up of a flower, as you can see, isn't hand embroidered. It is machine embroiders, but it's still very, very nice. But I think you will agree that the texture of the fabric, the background fabric is very old on a few instructions of had to make up your vintage, uh, bridal or brights nights cushion. And once again, thank you for joining me to the end of the video. Ah, good luck. And I hope you enjoyed the bonus
