In this class I'll teach you how the Vectornator X® app (Version 3.0- late 2019) works to create vectors on the go on your iPad®.  You'll learn how to create solid vector shapes, add colors, gradients and textures and how to create and test a seamless repeating pattern.

By the end of the class, you'll be able to create your own illustrations and patterns. This class is suited for beginners because I go through every step and tool required to complete the project.

1. Introduction: Hello, welcome to creating vectors on your iPad with Vectornator X. I'm Sandra Bowers. I'm a freelance illustrator and creature designer. I'm from beautiful managing Columbia, but I live in a tiny island in BC, Canada. I work for different clients creating patterns and illustrations for their products. Throughout this class, I will teach you how the Vectornator X app works to create vectors on the goal on your iPad. I'll teach you how to create solid vector shapes, art colors and gradients, art textures and how to create and test it, seamless repeating pattern. By the end of the class you will be able to create an illustration and a seamless repeating pattern, even if you've never done it before. I'll walk you through all the steps and the tools. So even if you're a total beginner, you will be able to follow this class. You just need a sketch and your Vectornator X app on your iPad. Hopefully, you'll have a stylus because that will make it easier and you're ready to go. This class is good for all creative artists that want to create vectors on the goal. It is amazing because you will be able to create vectors from anywhere you want. You can also use these skills to create web design, packaging design, children's books illustrators. There's so many uses for this app. So join me and let's start creating vectors. 2. Class Project and Supplies: For this class, you'll need an iPad. I'm using the iPad Pro 9.17 inches. A stylus. You can use your finger but it's much easier with a stylus. I'm using an Apple pencil with an ergo creep, and the Vectornator X App, which at the time of recording this class you can get for free in the App store. For the class project, you'll choose an illustration to make. To do it, you can choose a word, I chose the word Thrive. A theme, I chose something happy and tropical with flowers. A color palette, don't use new so many colors so it looks cohesive. You can have a sketch or you can just free hand it and then you can create your illustration and export it as a PNG or JPEG, so you can share it in a project gallery. You can also create a repeating pattern with your elements if you want. I have included a cheat sheet so you can remember how the math of the making of the pattern works. You can download it from the projects and resources tab. Remember to share your projects in a project gallery and you can also tag me on Instagram @sandrabowersart if you want. I'd love to see what you create. If you have any questions or comments, you can leave them in the community tab. Now that you have everything, let's start the class. 3. Intro to Vectornator X: The first thing we're going to do is go through the Vectornator app so you know how it looks. Here you have the gallery and it comes with some art, so you can see what people have done. If you see Ethereal Jungle, this one's mine, so just take a look at it and see the possibilities with this app. It's great. Here you have all your documents. This is the gallery. Here you have some news, and here you have some settings. Here is where you add your fonts. If you go to Font Library, you'll see fonts there. You can just tap here and go to your Dropbox or iPad, iCloud Drive. You just touch the font and it gets added super easy. You can also touch a font and delete it, and it's gone. Here you can subscribe to their newsletter too, and contact them, request some features, follow them on social media. That's all great, and let's go back to the gallery. You have all your documents here. Here you can edit, and you can select some documents, and you can delete them. I don't want to do that right now. Here, you create a new document and it has some presets. Here you can import from Creative Cloud, from a picture, your camera, Figma, Bamboo Slate. Here you have paper sizes. That's landscape and here it's portrait. You have different resolutions for screen, different devices, icons, social media. This is excellent to create post for social media because it has all the sizes now. I like creating a custom size for my artwork. I'm going to do a 3,600 pixels. You can also choose different units, and click "Create". Now we have our new document here. You have the ability to create art board. Here you see the title of your art board. The first thing you have here is, this one is to close and go back to the gallery. Here you have some settings for your canvas. Isolette Active Layer, that means you can only work on the layer you're standing in so there rest ones are isolated. That's really handy if you're working with too many layers and there are so many elements and you don't want to get confused. You can also see Outline Mode. You can have a grid. You can change the spacing. I'm going to turn that off. You can also have a white background or a transparent background. You can decide to work in CMYK or RGB. I recommend that if you're going to use this on print, you start with CMYK because it does change the colors a bit. You can change your dimensions here, the Unit Series, and Show Touches. This is really handy for recording video tutorials because then you'll see where you're touching. You also have snapping, so your objects can snap to smart guides, guides, edges, points, and grid. I don't want it snapping to anything for now. You can also set the input which is the stylus you're using. If you're using the Apple Pencil, it just gets connected automatically. You can select draw only with pencil. If you have that on, that means that you cannot draw with your finger. I always keep it off because I like being able to do things either with my hands or the pen. Here we have the Export. This has a lot of export options. You can even send it directly to Illustrator. You can export in JPEG, PNG, SVG, PDF, Illustrator or a Vectornator file. Yo can submit artwork to them, print it, save it, duplicate it, copy it. If you touch this here, it will fill your entire screen. This is undo, redo, and here you can close that menu. This menu gets activated once you use different tools. For example, if I draw a rectangle, I can get delete, cut and copy, and if I cut or copy, I will also get paste. That's really handy. You can undo by pressing with two fingers. You can redo by pressing with three fingers. You can zoom in and out by pinching. You can rotate, and for some tools you can use your other finger to press while you do certain things. See here, my canvas is rotating based on where I'm touching my finger. For example, to draw a square, if I press on my finger, it'll make it a perfect square. If I don't, then I can make rectangles. 4. Basic Tools: In this lesson, we will go through the basic tools of Vectornator. This is your selection tool. If you select these, it means you can select more things at one. If you don't have it selected, you can only select one thing at a time. This is copy. So you can copy something. It's like holding Alt. You can duplicate it. You can use these to rotate it. Here's a pivot point. You can set the pivot point wherever you want just by tapping, and then rotate it there. You can also resize these way. See, I'm resizing based on this pivot point. If you don't have that selected, you can resize something, but it will not be based on a pivot point. Same thing with the rotation. This is the node selection tool and it works the same. If I have this selected, I can select different nodes. The two nodes are selected. If I don't have it selected, I can only select one at a time. Here, I rotate based on a pivot point also and scale based on a pivot point. Here's the scissors. With the scissors, you can select an area of a path and it separates the two paths. So you get two separate objects. The difference with the eraser is that the eraser makes a gap but you still have one object. The scissor breaks it in parts and the eraser doesn't. Here you have the pen tool. You can make nodes and move them around. You can press your auto finger, and that way you will only move one of the handles. If I don't, then I can move both handles. I can also use the node tool to erase nodes. So just press on it and erase it or edit it by moving the handles. If I press one finger again, I'm moving only one handle. If I double tap, it becomes a straight edge angle. If I double tap again, it's rounded again. The pen tool is really useful when you need to create precise shapes, but I really like working with the pencil tool. I can create a shape, and if the streamline is low, the lines would be a bit more rough and it will hold each curve I make. If I make it higher, the lines will be a bit simpler and it will streamline some paths. If you click on it, you can also set your own exact percentage or you can just drop down here. I like to keep it high. The other one does not have pressure sides. It's just a shape. The difference with the brush is that if you're working with the Apple Pencil, it has pressures. For lettering, it's nice. I'm going to grab the text tool, make a square, type hello. Here I can change the size. I can fix the kerning, tracking, line-height in case you have different lines. You can also fit bounds to text size, which is really handy because then you don't have that huge textbox going everywhere. You can change the field colors so you can write a hex code here. You can even choose to add a gradient. See, you tap on it and you select the color, and then you have a gradient. If you tap here once more, you can add a different color or you can hold it and slide it down to erase it. This is a linear gradient and this is a circular gradient. You just slide that down. You can change the opacity either by tapping and writing a number or just by sliding it. You can use different blend modes. You can blur it. You can even add a stroke. So here you choose a color, the width. You can add arrowheads to the beginning or the end, dashes. Here you can select how the corners work, and you can also add a shadow. You can rotate it. You can blur it less or more. You can choose the offset, which is the distance between the object and the shadow. You can do this to objects too. Here we have a rectangle. We can round the corners. You can also tap and insert a specific amount, change the opacity, blend mode, blur it. It's the same for text or objects. I'm going to show you that these menu changes are made depending on the tool you're using. See here I have these lines. If I have nodes selected, it will show me these options. Here it's a straight corner. Here, it's rounded. Here, I'm moving the node with the two handles, and here I'm just moving one handle. In the next lesson, we'll start creating our basic shapes. 5. Creating the Basic Shapes: In this lesson, we will create the illustrations. We're going to make this illustration. I'm going to create a new canvas. I'll make it A-4. Since I have taken a picture of it, I will go to add and select it here from my camera roll. I'm going to resize it and center it and go to my Layers panel, and reduce the opacity, and lock it. Sketch is locked so now I won't be able to move it. I am going to select my pencil, choose a fill color. I didn't show you before, but here you can create your own palettes. So you can just choose whichever color you want, and add it to your palette, or just press it until it says delete and you can delete it. So initially I'm just going to make the black text. I like rotating my canvas it makes it easier to draw, so that's a great feature. I'm going to select my pencil, and I'm just going to go around my text. If you're getting this and you don't want it, you can increase the streamline. But if you increase it too much, it's going to really streamline it. So maybe a bit less. If you want the lines to be absolutely perfect, you can use your pencil tool, I find it very contriving. So I like my illustrations to be more organic, and then I'll come in and fix everything with the nodes. If there's complex shapes, you can also just make different paths. Unless I go, I don't stick to my sketch too much. So I'm going to select the nodes and carefully edited each node. You can erase some, you can make this as perfect as you want. My idea is to have it look handmade, so I don't want it to be absolutely perfect. I'm going to select here, and delete several nodes at a time. I still have that press. I need to make sure to deselect it so I'm still not moving two nodes at a time. So anyway, I'll speed this up and I will just keep doing this until I'm happy with the result. I'm happy with how that looks. So now we're going to go, and start making the illustrations. I am going to lock this Layer. I'm going to reduce the opacity a bit so I can still see it, but I can see what I'm doing in the back. I'm going to create a new layer, so I'm going to rename this layer, double-tap on it, rename it icons, and I'm going to drag it down. Underneath my text and underneath my sketch, so I can see the sketch as I'm drawing. Think the sketch can be a bit lighter now, so I'm going to unlock it and reduce the opacity a bit more, and go back to my icons layer, so I can start drawing on it. So here in my fill, I think I want to add some more greens to these palette, so I'm just going to add this one on a really dark one, and maybe an orange. Yeah, like a mustard yellow. So I'm just going to grab my pencil and start drawing the flowers. Now I'm drawing the basic shapes. I like to draw icons that don't touch in one layer, and then the other ones on another layer and another layer. People don't do this in vectors like I'm so used to working in Photoshop. That's how I like working. It's also easier for selecting things if they're not touching. So I'm going to create that, and my bird. If I'm going to change color, I need to make sure this is not select so it doesn't change that color. So at the beginning I just do this very fast, not in any type of organized way. I am going to create each letter individually, so I can add some gradients later and it will create a very pretty effect. I'll speed up the video sometimes because I'm just doing basically the same thing over and over again. I'm just letting my sketch guide me freely. I'm not thinking too much about colors right now or perfection. Just blocking in some basic shapes. I love this app very much because this pencil tool allows me to draw in a very free manner. I feel like I'm actually drawing and not creating vectors, but then you have the advantages of having vectors. I don't know. I find out vector tools make my drawing a bit more stiff. I never let this sketch become an imposition. To me it's just a guide. Unless I'm working on a client project where they actually already approved this sketch, then you need to stay very close to that, because it's what the client has already approved and what the client is expecting. So I'm going to create a new layer here. This one's going to be icons 2, I am going to lock my previous layer and then just work on this one. So I want to select another color. Since we are going to be creating a pattern with these later, that's why I'm making the elements complete, I'm not just leaving them like, cut in pieces where they will be covered obviously in this illustration. So have that in mind if you want to use this later for something else. I'm going to create another layer now, so that'll be icons 3, lock the previous one and start drawing on this one, the last element. So the basics are done so, now I can go to my sketch layer and hide it and I like keeping it down here just for reference, but now I'm only going to work with these layers. What I'm going to do next is add the proper colors and add some details and this is starting to take shape. 6. Adding Gradients and Details: I'm going to start adding details on the colors to my icons. All of my layers are locked and Hidden. I'm going to click on sketch. Because I want to create a new layer on top of it. I'm going to rename that background. I'm going to create a rectangle that's as big as my canvas. I'm going to make it black. Because I want my background to be very dark. I'm going to lock the background. I'm going to unlock icons too, for example, and make it visible. I'm going to select them all, and go to style and fill. I'm going to give them gradients. I'm going to try different colors. I think they liked this combination. I'm going to try adding one more color here. I think that looks much better. You can also do one by one, if you want them all to be different colors. With the selection tool, I'm going to touch on each one, and modify the gradient. I can also modify the order of the drawing. For example, these one I to send back. I also used a note tool to fix some things. Then go back to this selection to keep fixing the gradients. Sometimes I'll go back to style and choose a different color. Just to add some variety. I can go there and use the eyedropper to copy the fill color. Same with this one, I want to make this one, this color too. I want to try this theme in the front. I selected going to front, and like that better. I just have to fix some things here. I'm going to select a solid color that's light. I'm going to add some details using the pencil. For the little details you might want to reduce this streamline of the pencil. That way, you get more precise shapes. That I have this layer finished, what I like to do is grab the selection tool. Select each icon with its details, and come here to arrange and group it. That way if I move something, it will move with the details, and I won't be leaving things behind. It will also make it easier once the design is complete. Because it's easier to select just one group. If it selects something else, just touch here. Touch the thing you want to deselect. That way you're subtracting from the selection. I think everything's grouped. I'm going to continue doing this to all my icons, until all of them are colored and group. In the next lesson, I will show you how that looks, and we will finish our illustration. 7. Final Touches: In this lesson, we will assemble the final part of our illustration and give color to that text. I have finished coloring all my layers, and this is how they look. Now I'm going to go to my text layer and I'm going to make it visible. I'm going to unlock it and make sure it's the only one that's unlocked. Make it's opacity a 100 again. Now I can select that text, and I'm going to try out some colors to see how it looks like. Maybe I want it to be totally white. No, I think I want it to be cream, but I want it stand out some more. What I think I have to do is to give it a shadow. I'm going to duplicate my text layer. That one will be text shadow. I want to bring it down here. I want to work the text layer. Now I can work only with the shadow. I select that all. I'm going to make it black, and I'm going to use this precision wheel here, to move it a bit to this side and down, and see how that looks like. I want the letters to really stand out. Under my texts and a text shadow, I'm going to create a new layer. I'm going to draw a rectangle. I'm going to make it yellow and see what happens. I'm going to reduce the opacity to around 50 percent or to blend mode. Then try different blend modes to see what happens. I like this one multiply. You can also change the fields and see what happens with different colors. Sometimes if you see an artifact like that word, something is not happening and you can just touch the screen and zoom in and zoom out and then the effect will actually be applied. I think I really like that yellow, and I'm going to try it with different opacities. Make sure your rectangle is selected. Again, see that you have like an artifact and you're not seeing the proper effect. You're going to have to move it and then tap here and see what's happening. I'm going to go back to that layer and rename it as color overlay. Then lock it and go back to my text layer, make sure it's unlocked select it all. I definitely want to make it wider. I think that's good enough. What I want to do now is make some of the folly edge overlap the text. So I'm going to go and unlock all my icons, layers, and I'm going to select things that I want to be overlapping. These little leaves, I'm going to copy, and I'm going to create a layer on top of everything. That's going to be called overlap. There I'm going to paste those. See, now they are over the text. I want these ones to overlap. Again, I copy them, I go to the top layer and I paste it there. If there's a piece that is not working properly, I can erase it, and since it's a group, you're going to have to ungroup it. Go to arrange, ungroup it, select that shape that you want to erase and erase it. I need to erase this part of this one too, so I'm going to erase that. You can make it really precise if you use your node tools.That one is overlapping now and I'm going to change their color. Again, I will ungroup it so I can erase these areas that are overlapping. One more, this one. I'm going to copy overlap layer, paste it. That one I can leave as it is. Finally, I want the bird to be on top of everything, so I'm going to copy him and paste him in overlap. Finally, I've decided to just bring the color overlay over everything. Now, as a final touch, I'd like to add a texture. I'll create a new layer and name it texture. Then press Add, and I'll select one from my Dropbox. This is just a watercolor texture. I made it black and white, and then I scanned it. I'll stretch it a bit so it covers it all. Then I'll go to opacity and reduce it to 50 percent. Go to the blend mode and try different ones. I think I'll choose Overlay. Now I can call this illustration done. Here, you can see how the texture looks. It gives it a subtle touch that I think makes it look a bit less digital and a bit more hand-drawn. Now I can export it, go to Share, JPG. Rename it, make the quality a 100 percent and I'll leave the size as it is. Here you can choose CMYK if you want, and here you can add acute vectornator watermark. Press Save and you can Air Drop it or save it in different locations. In this case, I'll save it on my iPad, and press cancel. In the next lesson, we'll make a seamless repeating pattern using these elements. 8. Creating the Pattern: In this lesson, I will teach you how to make a seamless repeating pattern in Vectornator. We're going to use the elements we already have here. We're going to close this file and I'm going to go here to edit, select it, press here in the share button and down here you can duplicate it. So here we have our new document. I'm going to press close there and open it. I'm going to go to my layers and I'm going to delete the texture, the overlap, the text, and the text shadow because I'm not going to use that in the pattern and I'm going to delete my sketch also. Now, I'm going to make this a square document. Here I can go to the canvas and I can select the dimensions. I want to use pixels, so I want it to be 3,600 pixels by 3,600, which is 12 by 12 inches at 300 pixels per inch, or 50 inches at 72 pixels per inch. I can close that and here I have my illustration. Now, I'm going to unlock everything. Hold my finger down so I keep the proportions and make it bigger. Since this is all vectors, I can resize as much as I want and I won't lose any resolution. Then I'm going to resize the color overlay and the background. I'm going to lock the icons layers and that way I can select both a color overlay and the background. I'm going to go to the width and make it 3,600, which is the width of my canvas same with the height and I'm going to position them at zero on both the x and y axis, so that it's centered in my canvas. Now, I can lock my background and my color overlay and I'm going to work with my icons. The way a pattern works so it's seamless and it repeats seamlessly is that everything that is repeated on this side has to be repeated here in the exact same position and same in the top and the bottom. What I like to do first is to build the center of my pattern and then fill the edges. That's what I'm going to do, I'm going to unlock all my icons and I'm going to start moving them around and placing them in the center. I can rotate, resize, move, and organize my icons. That one I want to send to the back, this one to the front. Since I have them in three different layers, what I'm going to do is select them all, cut them and just paste them in one of the layers. Now, I can delete these two layers and that way I can reorganize them easier. Now, these one, when I send it to the front, it will actually go to the front. You don't have to use all the elements so you can erase some elements that you don't like for your pattern and I think I like that for the middle. What I'm going to do is select all my elements and move them to the top and the right, so they are overlapping the canvas. I just found this stray one here, so I'm going to delete it probably. Now, we're going to repeat everything that is overlapping here to this side. I'm going to make sure I have my selection tool and I select, I'm just touching a bit of my Canvas so everything that's touching this border is going to be selected. I am going to copy it and I am going to paste it. Then here in arrange, I am going to move it towards the right. So once I'm moving to the right or the left, I am moving the positions in the x. If I'm moving it to the right, I have to add 3,600 pixels, which is the size of our Canvas. If I'm moving it from right to left, I have to subtract 3,600 pixels. So right now we have to add 3,600 pixels to this number. Just grab your phone or a calculator and to minus 758.20, I am adding 3,600, that is 2,841.8 and hit ''Enter''. So right now, all of these just got duplicated here perfectly. I'm going to fill in this little gap, before I fill my bottom area. I'm going to have my selection tool on and select the duplicate button. I think maybe these leaves will work well there, so I make sure I turn the duplicate button off. I'm going to rotate it, I think that looks good. I want to fill in these little area here. Now, that we have our top filled, I am going to do the same thing, get the selection tool, select the little bit past the Canvas edge, copy, paste and then we're going to move from top to bottom. When you're moving from top to bottom, you add the size of your Canvas, so we're adding 3,600 pixels. If you're moving from the bottom to the top, you have to subtract 3,600 pixels. It's not a lot of math, you just have to learn that if you are moving this way, you add, if you're moving this way, you add. If you are moving that way you subtract, if you're moving up you subtract. This vertical will be modifying this y-value. Again, on my calculator, I'm adding 3,600 to minus 505.08 and that is 3,094.92 and hit ''Enter''. Now, we have the bottom repeat done. We have to fill in these gaps and we'll be done. Now, that we have repeated this size every time you put something that touches a border, you have to make sure you repeat it on the other side or else your pattern won't be seamless. If you're putting things here in the middle it's okay. You don't have to repeat them anywhere. But if you're touching a border either on the sides or the top or the bottom, you have to put it on the other side, exactly the same, so I will show you. I'm going to grab these flower, make sure the duplicate this on. I'm going to place it here, turn the duplicate off and I wanted to make it a little bit bigger and rotate it and that just touched the border. I have to copy, paste and modify the x because it's going horizontally to the left. I grab my calculator and I'm going to subtract 2,408.72 minus 3,600 and that is minus 1,191.28 minus and hit ''Enter''. Now, the flower is repeated here and now that the borders are full, I don't have to think about that anymore. I'm going to hide this and just concentrate on filling these areas. I'm going to duplicate these flower, rotate it and I think I can place it here, it's not touching, so I'm okay. I also want to send out one to the back, so there it goes. Let's grab some more things to duplicate these leave, these foliage and these yellow things. We're going to turn the duplicate off and move these ones around. What I'm thinking right now is filling in the spaces in a way that it flows. I'm trying to leave gaps that are almost the same space everywhere, so I don't want to leave a huge black gap here and then the rest of the pattern is very packed. That way you can make it organic. This is my favorite part, just moving little things around. I'm going to duplicate this one here, maybe resize it, make sure I put my finger down so its proportioned and I think that works. The spaces in between are all similar and it flows nicely. This is the swatch that you use for a repeat. If you're going to upload it to a print on demand side or something this is your patterns square. 9. Testing the Pattern and Conclusions: This is our last video. In this video, we will wrap it up by testing our pattern. If I export these, I'm going to export PNG. Some print on demand sites call for PNGs. So I'm going to call these Thrive Pattern. I don't need the transparency because the background is black anyway. I have the width here, and I will press Save. I'm going to save it to my iPad, and then hit Cancel. So I'm going to close this and I'm going to open a document, just whichever size, and I'm going to place that pattern square. I'm going to resize it holding my finger down so it doesn't lose its proportions, and I'm just going to duplicate it by holding my finger down. See, it's in a straight line. So if you select that and use this, you can make it match seamlessly. Then I can duplicate those too. Again, the duplication is on and I press my finger down, I release. I won't be using this. This is just to show you how the pattern would work if you're using it, like if you're tiling it with a seamless tile pattern program or something. Maybe I'll just duplicate these once more and fill these document. I press there once and then it's seamless, and there you have a perfectly seamless repeating pattern all done on your iPad. It's amazing because it's vectors, so you can scale it indefinitely, and you can send it to Adobe Illustrator, you can recolor it easily, and all done on-the-go on your iPad, thanks to Vectornator. This is why I love this app so much. It has so many functions. For my workflow, it's perfect. This is everything I need to create patterns and illustrations.
