Project Description

Bring abstract patterns to life in your designs, illustrations or products!

fcf49ddc

Decide on the approach you want to take or try different ones:

  • create & curate a collection of patterns to be used on different surfaces or products;
  • create designs combining patterns with geometric shapes;
  • create designs combining patterns with organic shapes;
  • create designs combining patterns with type;
  • use patterns in your illustrations to add a new meaning or new and different visual qualities to it.

Regardless of what approach you want to try out, feel free to use any kind of your exciting work and experiment with texturing or layering patterns.

If you haven’t taken my previous class (which I recommend to make it easier to follow this class) or haven’t created any patterns yet I’ve attached a number of my own patterns (see attached files).

Don’t hesitate to check out our Abstract Patterns research board on Pinterest to get some inspiration, there are plenty of different examples of pattern applications.

Upload the following into you class project:

  • any work-in-progress previews if you want to receive feedback on how to develop your work;
  • final outcome(s);
  • design mock-ups (optional, unless you are developing a collection or a product range);
  • a few words about your outcome(s), your process and what you have learnt.

Further Instructions and Techniques:

Mastering Typography 1: Introduction to Typographic Contrast — my introduction class into typography in case you want to explore combining patterns with type but don't know where to start. Though it is based in InDesign, the principles are the same and most type tools and panels in Illustrator are very similar.

Draw & Texture Minimalistic Animals in Illustrator — our class on producing vector illustrations in a reduced graphic style and texturising them in case you want to explore vector illustration.
