This class is designed for beginners and really anyone who has any interest in learning how to create quick and simple mock-ups in photoshop. I will be walking you through some shortcuts and tricks that i've learned over the years that have helped improve my workflow and that have helped me create pieces that caught the eyes of some very cool clients! Whether you want to make mock-ups for yourself or for other clients, this class will be useful to all of you! And don't worry, I will provide you with all needed material for this project, such as the images, sample design, and textures. 

This course is made using the creative cloud version of photoshop, specifically Adobe Photoshop CC 2020 is what I use in this course, however the principles and skills taught in this course can and will apply to other versions as well. 1. Introduction: Hello, everyone and welcome to my course, creating quick and easy markups in photo shop. May name is Tom Chi, and I've been a graphic designer and photographer for the past 10 years, creating various design work for clients and companies alike. You'll see some examples of my work going across the screen, but if you want to see more, please check on my Web site at www dot the real tom kind dot com or look me up on instagram at the rial. Tom Chi. Whether you are an independent creator, small business or large business, at some point you will need to use mock ups. This could be to sell your services or your goods, such as artwork. Sure, it's mugs, basically anything you want. There really are no limits. Having high quality mock ups are crucial because sometimes you might not have the right backdrop or you might not have any models available. So being able to create mock ups quickly and easily can give you the edge that you need to keep you or your business moving forward. Today I will be showing you not one, but two really quick and easy mock ups. You can create in photo shop in just a few minutes. Together, we'll be creating these and I'm super excited to have you follow along. I have included all the images and resource is that you will need for this course in the provided materials. So make sure that you download those so you're ready in the phone. Videos will be covering the whole process from beginning to end, so let's go. 2. Painting Mock-up : all right, and here we are in the first markup of this course will be doing the painting muck up, and that is super useful to showcase any product. Do you want to sell or any artwork that you want to show off its all around? A really good thing toe have. So let's start with our campus here. I'm using a 10 inch by 10 inch canvas here at 300 pixels per inch. That is just the general canvas that I've made for myself for today can be any size, do you really want? So let's go and get our images in here. We're gonna go file place embedded, and you should have these materials as well. So I'm gonna have my painting image first. Just hit. Enter on that strongly file place embedded again. I'm going to get our sample design. There we go live to the max, so we have our two images that we want to use. Let's start with the one on the bottom here with our main mock up image and just resize is let's do control or committee to transform this. And let's just stretch it to fit fit our screen here Like I said, you can have this be any size you want. I could have a B a rectangle, but I've gone for a square crop for this one. So there we go. We have that one done. Next we have our sample design again. Let's to control or command T and let's make that fit in approximately to our image will get a perfect fit in just a second. But as you see, this image is a lot wider than the frame has here for this painting. So let's fix that, shall we? So it's just enter now because we did place embedded. All of our images are smart objects, so if we resize that multiple times, it's not going to lose any quality, which is exactly what we want. So let's turn off our design layer and let's zoom in here. Hyzy were zoom tool and let's zoom in. Now What I'm gonna use is dependable. So hit P on your keyboard, it's gonna come up with a pencil. Now, this is probably one of the easiest mass kings you're ever going to do. You just click in all the four corners. You don't have to drag any of the handles. Usually with the Pento. You could drag handles and get crazy curves, but we don't want any of that. Something's gonna do that. We just want to click in all the corners. Now this corner is a little difficult because he can't exactly see it. It's too bright. So for this one, you kind of have to guess a little bit. And if you hold down control or command, then you can drag these handles around a little bit, too. Shoot your needs. So let's go back up here and let's connect that. That's not too bad. So now let's hit control or command, enter. And there you have the selection. Now what we're gonna do is we're gonna turn our design lier back on, and we're gonna hit our mask tool, which is just down here. It's gonna add a layer mask. So, you see, we already have the perfect in quotes edge to this. Now, this is not perfect. If I move this around, you see there is no no real freedom. And if I wanted to resize this, it still goes outside of the border. So how do we fix this? It's a very simple. What you're gonna do is simply click this little icon here. What this is going to do this is gonna unlinked the mask from the image. So if we unclip that and we're back with our image layer here, if you hit control or command T you can now resize this and it's going to stay within that must that we've just created. So I'm gonna play around. Was just a little bit until I'm happy with it. Not much adjustment really needs to be made. So there we go. I'm happy with that. So I hit enter. But now, as you see, that's a little bit flat. If we look at our original image, there's a shadow over here that some diffused shadows going on over on this side. We really want to kind of fix that. I wanna have that on our sample design as well. So what we're gonna do is we're going to duplicate this layer, so hit control or command J to get ourselves a new layer and let's hide the one that's below it. So first thing that I want to do is I want us to get the highlights in here. The way we're going to do that is on this new layer were basically gonna add a few adjustments to it. So first, let's add a little brightness and contrast. Let's bring the brightness up a little bit. That's not too bad. That's at a hue saturation layer. And we're gonna bring the lightness up. Not too much, because we don't want us to be too washed out. But if you notice whenever light hits something, it tends to get de saturated ever so slightly. So we're going to do that. I'm happy with that now. Obviously, this isn't looking good. So on the hue saturation layer, hold down, shift and click. Then you layer we created with the sample. It's gonna select all these layers and then hit control or command G to group them into a layer. And we're going to call this highlights. All right, now what we're gonna do is we're gonna add a layer mask, and if you press the G, it's going to give you your paint bucket tool, and you want to make sure that black is the color on top. If it's not just hit D to get your default colors. If it's not already black and white and then x until you have black on the top. And now we're gonna fill that in, and it's gone just pretty much what we wanted to do. So what we're gonna do now with the paintbrush, we're gonna want to make sure the brushes soft, which it is. So hardness zero. And you can use any old brush for this and you can increase or decrease the size of your brush with the brackets. Some when I make a decently size of brush and what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna paint on the highlighted parts of this canvas here. So let's start with that. Generally, where there's a highlight, I'm gonna paint until there you want to be mindful of the soft edges and the harder edges. We're gonna do this hard edge here in just a second. Let's go to Russia and change the hardness. Let's go to about 80% now. This is a very harsh straight line, So in order to get that, you wanna hold down shift and then when you paint is gonna be ah, hard straight line A little bit more over into here. There we go and that's essentially what we want. Now if we turn on the layer below it, you see, we've added you can now see kind of the little bit of a shadow that we have on the main canvas itself. So it's not too bad. Might want to come back a little bit on some areas and you can switch between black and white with X. And I might lower the opacity for some of the areas and just get a little more natural kind of spread of light coming in here. That's not too bad. And I do want this shadow on the right to be a little bit harsher than we have. So again, I'm gonna go to the original sample design and hit control or command J again. And this is gonna be the layer in which we do our shadows. So let's drag that up to the top. We can turn off everything else that's below it for now and what we want to do with just a very minor tweaks, we're gonna go to brightness contrast again. We're gonna lower the brightness, ever feel slightly and we're gonna go to our hue saturation layer again. We're flipping it down to the layer below. We're gonna lower the lightness of it as well as a saturation. So now let's go ahead and pull Downshift as we select these three layers and hit control or command G to group them together. And I'm gonna name this shadows very now what we're gonna do is we're gonna create another layer mask and using our paint bucket tool hit G, we're gonna fill that layer with black again. So now what's gone? So now weaken Essentially paint in the areas that we want So let's turn on the other two layers that we've had And let's hit be for our brush And we're gonna want to have white on top this time Let's make a rush a little smaller. I'm gonna hold down shift as a painting. The darker color here now, Yeah, the hardness is still up, so we want this to be a little bit softer. Here we go. I like that a little bit more. Let's go put capacity down. Like essentially with the highlights and shadows that it does come up to your own preference. Um, I tend to try and make it be as realistic as possible, and again, with these layers, you could turn opacity down. So if I find that this shadow here's too harsh making going, torneo opacity down, let's say to 80% that's a little bit more subtle, and I like that might even go down to about 70% on that. Not bad. I like that. So there we have our first markup. It's very simple and very quick, very easy. You can do a lot more complex ones. The next one that we're going to do will be a shirt mock up. And that one is a little bit more difficult because you have to worry about the different creases and folds in clothing as well as a texture off the clothing itself. If we zoom into an image or a painting, you won't really have too much texture on this. It's on a canvas for this image. It's not too important because it wouldn't be that noticeable as our background is already fairly busy. So there we have our first painting mock up. Next, we're going to go into our shirt mark up 3. Shirt Mock-up : and here we are in shirt mark up. This one will be a little bit more in depth, a little bit more difficult. There a few extra steps that we have to do as compared to the painting muck up. But I think it's gonna come out with a really cool result. So let's get started again. I'm using a 10 inch by 10 inch canvas at 300 pixels per inch. You can get that set up when you make yourself in you file, but let's start with getting our images in here. Let's do file place embedded, and you should have these images as well if you downloaded it. So we're gonna have our blank shirt model here, and then we're also gonna have our design. We can use the same designers last time because many times if you have a business, you're gonna be wanting to use the same design or seeing local in multiple different places . So let's see what we can do here, shall we? So first things first, let's try and decrease the size of this to approximately the size. We want it to be on our shirt. I want this to be pretty substantial like a really cool, hip, modern share gonna angle that little bit. And because we place this as embedded, it's gonna be a smart object. So we can resize this as many times as we want. It's not gonna lose the quality. Now, as you see, this is not gonna look good just like this. Having a B place as a perfect rectangle doesn't not make sense. A share has folded, has wrinkles and everything, and the human body itself is not completely flat. So it's gonna warp the design. It's on the front, so we want to do that. So let's hit control or command t and let's right. Click that and let's click Warp. Now, what this is going to do this is going to allow us to have a bunch of these different handled and really warp our image to exactly the location that we want it to be. So let's start with this. This does take a little bit of time. You want to be very careful with this and really taken to consideration how the human body is shaped as well as how the clothing is as you see here, this part of the clothing is very much at an angle, so we're definitely gonna want to bring that out. I want to bring this part in. And don't be afraid of taking your time of this step, because this is what's gonna make it look more believable than having a place to rectangle on your mock up image. Because people can tell if you just paste it in and you don't want that. So let's keep messing around with this just a little bit. And like I said, you can pause the video and get your image to match as best as possible. Before we go on to the next few steps. Let's hit, enter and assume out a little bit together a little bit of perspective. I might do a little bit more with the top part. So if you go control or committee again and right click to war, you got right back into it. So this top corner here seems to need a little bit of something. There you go. I'm happy with that. It's gonna do one more quick change, and then I think you will be ready. Okay, Perfect. So yours may look slightly different than mine. Definitely try your best to warp it. So goes with the flow of the clothing a little bit better and with the model that you have . So let's start with our highlights and shadows, shall we? So we're going to keep this layer the way it is, and we're essentially going to do a similar process that we did for the painting. So first in that we're gonna do is control or command J make ourselves a new layer, and let's hide the one that's below it. This'll is going to be our highlights layer if we hide this. As you see, the shirt does have some highlights, some lighter parts. It is fairly neutral, for the most part, but it does also have seen shadows that we're gonna want to touch on and so increases with highlights shadows over on this side. So for our highlight, So let's go ahead, increasing our brightness again, clip flat down below. Let's increase our brightness. Let's increase our lightness under hue saturation. Get that little bit washed out. You can put the saturation of ever so slightly, so we're not losing too much of saturation. So if we see before and after, that's essentially what we're doing now. If you hold down, shift and click the bottom layer of the highlight section, it will select all three of those. And let's take control or command G group that together and let's rename that highlights Perfect. Now what we want to do is create a mosque. It's it's essentially the same process we did before and now hit G Fear Paint Bucket Tool. Make sure that black is the color on top. So I had to hit X and we're gonna make it disappear just like magic. Let's turn on the layer down below. We're gonna go into our brush tool with B. And now we want to make sure that our brushes soft so hardness set to zero. And I'm gonna put my opacity back up to 100. And essentially what we want to do right now is we want to paint in all the highlighted areas, but we can't really see it. So what I tend to do when it comes to clothing, I toggle little day or what? The designs on owning off a lot so that I see exactly where the design would be. So let's make sure we have white on top here, and we have a little bit of the highlight up here. There we go. Maybe make the brush bigger, lower The opacity might have a little bit coming up in the center. Here is the clothing goes and maybe a little bit on the top. We turn it on. You see, it has a little bit of variation there. Not too bad. Might even want to bring a little bit more into that. All right, now, let's go and create our shadow layer because having these three, the mid tones, the highlights and the shadows, that really brings it together. And that's what helps to sell it. So let's go again, down to our sample design. We're gonna hit control or command J and we have are you layer that strike that up to the top and let's hide everything else below it for now. So we only have this one design here. Now what we want to do is want to make this darker because we have some shadows here. So let's go Brightness, contrast layer. Let's lower the brightness ever so slightly on Let's go to hue, saturation and lower the lightness We can even be. Separate it a little bit. Now we're gonna hold down shift, select all these three layers and hit control or command G to group them together and honoree. Name that. Two shadows now weaken. Go ahead, make another mask Hit G. Make sure the color black is on top and we painted away. Now we can go and turn the other layers back on it. Be to get our brush it X to get white to be on top. And now when we paint or painting in shadows So that's what we want for this for this layer . So you see, this side here is a little bit in shadow as well as of this this little crease here Going to make sure you don't get this part back here. Let me get enough. So you don't want this part because the clothing goes over in this direction. So there is like a harsh cut off point here. You don't paint shadowed here because that would not make sense for this image. So let's go ahead. Get that in there and again. You can turn the opacity down if you find it too much to turn mine down to about 80%. 79. It's fine. And now the last little step that I'm gonna do is I'm gonna add a little bit of clothing texture to this cause when it comes to clothing, it actually matters. So before I do that, I'm gonna group all the design layers together, hold down shift and then let's say control or command G group that together, we're gonna call this and design. Now what we want to do is going to do file place invented and I have this fabric texture. Now I see this is way to big foot. If we clip it. If you hold down alter option on the Mac and clip it down to the layer below you see, it is fitting to the shape of our design. Now let's hit control or command t and make that smaller. We want the fibers here of this fabric to be a small as possible. Make sure that it covers all of your design that's enter, and now we can zoom in a little bit. Now we have a few different options when it comes to blending modes, and it does come down a little bit to your own preference. A few that couldn't work in this situation would be Multiply way. Also have overlay and some flight, depending how you want to use it for this specific example. I'm going to use it on some flight, so if we zoom out, we can see the before and after. As you see, it really fades it. But at the same time, it does add in this clothing texture. Now I want to turn the opacity of this way down. That means amount. Surely ice can see exactly what I'm doing here. So before and after, I don't want it to be too faded. So let's have no passive off about 30. And as you see, that's looking a little bit better. We have a little bit more detail in the fabric, a little bit off the textures coming through, and that's all that we really want. We want this to look a little bit better than just having placed an image onto here, so our final step that I think is a really cool to do is many times you or your company will have your own name or logo that you want to add to an image. So let's say hypothetically, you have a logo, I'm gonna have Minebea. It's my name Tom Chi, And let me re color that to be black. So to get that you just hit t for type tool and you type out what you want. And I want this logo to be down here. But you see all these creases, it's not gonna be easy. So let's resize this first of all to approximately Besides that, I want something like that, but that again looks very placed and it doesn't look too good. So what we're gonna do, right? Click on the layer with the name with the text and you're gonna do convert to smart object So this is gonna allow us to be able to warp this as well. So, first of all, it's gonna move this down ever so slightly. That's it. Control or command t on this right click that and war. Now, this might take a little bit more time than the one before, because here you really have to pay attention and make sure that the text is warping with the clothing. So let me go ahead and just adjust all these handles to approximately what this would be like. And again, there is a lot of back and forth with this. So I'm trying to follow the curve of this particular fold. If you want. You can pick a different area entirely, so it's Enter it. Let's zoom out. Yeah, I like that. It is kind of going above the fold here, so that is that it's cool. So we're not done yet. I'm gonna get some shadows and highlights to this layer, but I'm gonna do it a little bit differently than I did for the other design. So, first of all, I do want to change the color of this. So let's go ahead and pick ourselves a great color. Go to layer above, clip it down. And with our brush tool, we can just paint, not great color over it. I'd like T. I do generally like to start with a neutral color for from my text that allows me to add in my highlights and shadows separately. Let's make another new layer, clip it down that zooming that's it, be for a brush and make it very small. And that was the fun part where we get to paint in some of the shadows. I'm gonna sample some of the color that's already in here, and I'm gonna bring the opacity down to about 66%. So now I'm just gonna go ahead, paint in shadow area and on another layer on the paint in this highlight color, you don't wanna go too overboard with this. Just wanted to have a little touch of it for the realism. I'm gonna turn opacity on the highlight layered down because you still want to be able to read all of that. So here's before, See, just plain black text after looks a little bit more realistic and like it's part of the image. And there you have it. This is a very quick and easy way to make a shirt mark up. Obviously, you can get a lot more complex with this if you're subject has more folds in or if it's at an angle. Generally speaking, these air the techniques you can use to get a very simple and easy mock up made very quickly. As you see, it took no time at all. It took just a couple of minutes and we have something that's ready to go on to Facebook on their website into an add on to instagram. The possibilities are endless, so I hope you learned a lot in the next video on the go over really quickly on how to save this properly for various uses, so let's go. 4. Saving your Image: all right, and we're done with creating our mock ups. But now we have to save it. And depending on where you want to use it, whether it's for Web or whether you're going to be printing it, there's some very important things to take note up. Now I'm going to be going over four different ways. You can save this and the pros and cons of each of them. So first of all, let's start with J. Peg. Everyone knows J Peg so generally what people tend to do is file save as, and they'll go down here, pick Jay Peg and let's just call this painting markup class and they hit saved, and most people will go for the largest file. They want it to be highest quality, which is totally fine. It's 4.1 megabytes and they click OK, it's saved. But what is going to put that onto your website? 4.1 megabytes on the on a website is a very large If you have 100 images on your website, each of them are four megabytes. That's 400 megabytes that has to load just to load your website. So generally what we want to do. We want images that we use for Web to be as small as possible. So the way you can do this and still have it be a J peg is you go over the file export and safer Web legacy. Now, this is gonna essentially save it for the Web, like the name implies and is going to keep it as a JPEG. So if we zoom out, you see, we have our image here, and current size is about 1.7 megabytes. That's still too big. We want this down around 500 kilobytes, if less that is even better. So I'm gonna go ahead change the percent here to 50% and you see we're ready down to 341 kilobytes. This is gonna be perfect for a website. As you see, you don't lose any quality, especially if it's on a website and this is This is a bit to go 341 kilobytes as compared to the 4.1 megabytes we had before. It's significantly smaller, so let's go ahead, hit save and I'm gonna choose to file we had before. But this time I'm gonna also add for Web. It's really good to make sure you label your files correctly so you know what you need to put online and what you need to send to a print shop. Now let's go over to our shirt, muck up and let's say we want to print this, that we want this to be a printed ad in a magazine or something. We have to save it as another file format. Now the best image format for print is usually a file format known as tiff T i f f. So let's go ahead and go file save as and in the drop down here we're going to go. It's all the way at the bottom. We're going to select Tiff, so I'm gonna rename the shirt muck up class tiff. Let's hit save and you're gonna have a few options here and it might look a little bit complicated, but it's not that complicated image compression. You don't want to compress this image at all. You want this to keep the highest quality possible, because that's gonna be super super important when you're printing it. You don't have to worry about the pixel order for this or the bite order or the layer compression so you can essentially just hit. Okay, that says, including layers, will increase file size and let's hit OK, because sometimes, depending where you print, they're gonna want to have all the layers of the image in case they need to make any little alterations. So let's hit OK and that it's saved now. Lastly, last way to save this image is a PNG that could be used for both Web and print. So let's go file save as and we're going to go down here to PNG. We're going to do shirt mock up for this class and call it PNG. Let's hit save And the only dialogue box that comes up is that it asks about the file size , so we want large file size. You want the highest quality possible. So let's hit okay? And you see it takes a little second to save, and I'm gonna bring up my file explorer just to show you the file size, all right? And here we have our four images that we saved. The two different J pegs are PNG and art. If so, first of all, let's go over the sizes of all of these. So when we had the plane, J. Peg, you see the file size down here, it's 4.12 megabytes. That is a fairly large, but it might be all right if you're just posting it to Facebook is a one time poster onto your You were your company's instagram page. It could definitely work, however, if you save it for Web file sizes drastically reduced down to 342 kilobytes. This means your website will load way, way faster, and it's gonna help you retain more clients and more customers because they don't have to sit around waiting for a website to load. So if you are saving for your website, that is something you definitely have to do. Now let's look at our P and G and art. If files. Our PNG file is 5.88 megabytes, it's the largest one so far, and it is the highest quality so far. This is gonna be good for Web and for print. But again, if it's this file size, it's not gonna help with your website loading fast. So that's something to keep in mind and Lastly, we have tiff files and SEC that is a staggering 70 megabytes is huge massive. This is one. While you're definitely not gonna want to put onto your website. That's why this is perfect for print when it comes to printing wherever you print there. Most of the time they're going toe. Ask for tiff files because it has the most detail. He's gonna help them be able to give you the highest quality print, Whether it's for a magazine, for a brochure, for a billboard, big poster, whatever it is, you're gonna want it to be the highest file size and because it has kept all the layers in it naked, adjust anything if they have to, which makes it super convenient. All right, so let's go over real quick the pros and cons of what we just did. So when it comes to J pegs, the pros are that is great for websites, especially if you save it for Web. Having the file size be down in the couple 100 kilobytes will make your website load so much faster. The downside of J pegs oh, is that it compresses the image, and it's irreversible once it saves it as a J peg. The detail is lost. What it is is what it is. You're not gonna have any. You're not going to get any detail back. That's what you have now when it comes to P and G. The great side of that is that has fantastic image quality. I use that personally a lot on the images I post to my instagram. A lot of those R, p and G and they have very high qualities, and it could be used for Web and print. The downside of that, though, is that PNG is not very well supported. You might find print shops, print houses that do not support P and G's, and you won't be able to print what you need again. There might be certain websites and website building software that might not support PNG. They might ask you for a J peg. So that is something you also want to keep in mind. And again, PNG files are larger. As you saw, the PNG file we saved was 5.88 megabytes. That is a file size. He definitely do not want to be on your website now. Lastly, we had our tiff image, and the pros of that is that it's lossless compression. You don't lose any details when you say that you don't lose any off the color, don't lose anything. And it's perfect image quality, which makes it ideal for printing. The downside of this is that it's a huge final size. I've had tiff files, which were up to two gigabytes and size because that's what it had to be at because it was completely lossless compression. It was a large file size, large canvas size, and that ended up making the tiff be a huge file size. But when it comes to printing, that is what you're gonna want to use. So in the next part of discourse, I'm gonna give you some final thoughts and conclude our course. 5. Final Thoughts & Conclusion: and there you have it. You've completed my course on creating quick and easy mock ups and Photoshopped. Congratulations. That's an awesome achievement. I really hope that you've learned a lot today and skills I can use to create more markups in the future. I would love to see what you have created using the techniques taught in this course.
